Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is Codst Cody Ellen podcast. C O Yo, what's up?
Mr Cody Allen, Mr Jake, how are you good man? Well?
Actually yeah, I just got off the phone and h
B A C guy. So I mean, can't be that
great at that time of year, Bud, people are firing
up that A C. You gotta be working correctly. You
got some problems there. You know what's really interesting? It

(00:23):
seems like a lot like yesterday I was with a
buddy Mines like, bro, I gotta leave early, I gotta
go meet an h D a C guy. I was like,
there must be like something where like somebody flips the
switch in the government and everybody's h V a C
s go out. Hey, But because mine's brand new, the
problem is you're not changing your filters on time. How
do you change your filters? I can assure you, Mr
Cody Allen that having a one year old in the house,

(00:47):
that that Eric can make sure we change this filter
like every four days. Yeah, because I meet people who
go like six months a year and that changed your filter,
and like that's what ruins your h V A C.
Because I like, yeah, it's like a monthly two month
thing for most people. If you have like dust like
I do. I don't know our dog hair or anything
like that. Anything that thing will stuck up all the

(01:08):
allergens and it will get clogged up quick. Well, good
luck with that, thanks man. I didn't realize we're going
to get into some HB A C talk. It's the
first time. So that's like the first time HbA C
talk we've ever had. It's been great, it is, and
so far, so good. I feel like it's been forever
when I think about Jake Owen, like, when was the
last time I saw you? Because if time has stopped,
has it? Not the old Jake one? Dude? I'm a

(01:30):
new Jack go on now, dude, you saw the old
Jake Goen. What do you see the new one? Now?
I feel like we've gone through Jake uh two point
already and so this is Jake three point. So you're
moving on to what's the new chapter? Man, I'm in
a whole new chapter, not Cody. It's unbelievable. I think
we all are. Doesn't it feel like we're like life
is just immediately changed to something else now I don't

(01:51):
even understand it. Like I told you um on the
text message, I had to run upstairs to turn on
everything because basically I'm working out of my guest room. Here.
You have the microphone, the laptop, and then a camera
in here for the Hot twenty shows. So it's like
I'm doing like it's normal to have a bed and
a camera in the same room, right, Jake, Yeah, that
depends on what kind of you know what you're doing?

(02:13):
You know what I'm saying. No, seriously, though, it's um
it has been a bit since I've seen you, and
I'm great to hear from you. Thanks for calling me. Um. Yeah, man,
I feel like you're a buddy, Like I feel like
when I was thinking about this called today. You know,
Jake is one of those people. It's rare. Actually, by
the way, I hear the birds tripping. Is that birds? Yeah,
I'm actually just walking. I'm yeah, it is the birds.
I'm I'm I'm walking up and down my driveway around

(02:36):
talking to So. I hope you don't my nature sounds
in the background. No, But I feel like you would
if I was in jail, like you would come and
bail me out. Like I could call you and you
actually would show up, Like you're that kind of guy,
You're that good a dude. Yeah, man, I well, I
appreciate you saying that, but that's a flattering compliment to
hear you say that, because I think anybody has a
human being like to me, like at the end of

(02:58):
the day, when my day's over, like all I want
to be remembered for number one, most importantly by my
little girls, is that I was a great dad, you know.
But outside of that, to my fans, to my friends,
to people like that, Like, it doesn't matter like how
many number one songs you have, It doesn't matter how
many you know, the awards you have. Whatever, it's kind
of person you are, and it's the kind of it's

(03:18):
it's the first thought when people think of you. It's
like what kind of person you are? And so you're
you're you're common there. Man's very flattering. So it's true.
I will definitely build you out of jail codey just
you know, just hopefully ninety times soon. Don't do anything.
I'm trying not. I'm staying home. What could I possibly do.
I'm probably drinking a little more than I did before
the quarantine, like because it's so convenient here in the house. Well,

(03:39):
how do you do that? How do you drink and
stay such so good looking and good shape, but I
double up on all the other stuff. Like that's what
Tim McGraw taught me, is that, hey, you can have
the cheeseburger, but you better work out twice as hard
that day. So you just dropped something. It was Tim McGraw.
You just dropped him. Well, we said his book. He
didn't really like call me and say this is how
you do it, but that is in the book. Um,

(04:01):
so well, hey, by the way, that book is phenomenal.
I've told a lot of people about that. I even
told him that, I said, what a great like. It
really relates to like a lot of us in this
world where you're going, going, going all the time. And
his whole theory is like just get out and moved.
Like if you just move every day and get yourself gone,
you're ahead of the ball game. I liked that theory.
Speaking of number ones, which you brought up a moment ago,
you're on your way to your next one with Made

(04:22):
for You, which is I'm so glad you're releasing Yet
I've always loved this song. You performed it on The
Bachelor bachelorrette last year, and then you performed at Michael
Ray and Carly Pierce's wedding, and so I want to
get into the song a little deeper. But tell me,
what do you about that day performing at their wedding? Man? Well, first,
I remember first and foremost when Michael uh asked me

(04:42):
at St. Jude when we played uh the St. Jude
radio event with Randy Owen and Clinton Black together and
I played that song and Michael afterwards came to me
kind of surprising and he's like, look, man, we've been
trying to find a song for our wedding for a
long time. He said, I heard you play that tonight.
It blew me away. Would you do that Carl and
I wedding? And I was super flattered and also kind

(05:03):
of nervous, man, because like, you know, going and playing
and somebody that's a musician, you know, wedding two of
them together. But when I did it that night, I
realized it kind of solidified everything for me. I not
only realized how much that song means to them and
like for the rest of their life that would be
a memory for them, but I I've realized throughout playing
that song performance after performance how much it does resonate

(05:25):
with everyone out there, whether you're married or not. I
mean it's just a song about that person in your
life that you feel like was made for you to
make you a better person, or do you live for
that person? And um, I think it's a special time
like that right now too. You know people are feeling
that way. They're thankful for the people they have in
their lives. Tell me about things that are made for you.
For example, if I said, like, what's one tailor made

(05:45):
article of clothing that you feel it's made for Jake, Like,
what would that feel like? The go to flip flops?
Are you wearing some now? Uh? No, I don't have
any shoes on it right now. Actually, but I if
I'm not forced to put on shoes, like, I'm not
gonna put them on. And then if I am forced
to put on shoes, I'll just put on some flip
flops because that makes me feel like my feet are
not in jail. They can breathe. So what's a sport

(06:10):
made for you? What's your go to? Oh? Man, I
don't know. Um, probably golf, you know, I'm I grew
up playing golf, so but I love all sports anything
with a ball or a racket or a paddle or
something like that. I love baseball, you know football whatever
I thought you'd said golf, because you're a great golfer.
By the way, Um talk to me about food, like
what's up? Food made for you? Your favorite watermelon? Watermelon

(06:33):
was seriously made for me, Like I feel like the
Good Lord was like, you know what, there's one fruit
that's missing and I should make it for Jake, and
he he made watermelon. And then some weird guy came
along one day and I was like, let's just take
the seeds out of it. And uh, I don't like
that guy, because I'm a seed fan. Oh you like
to you like to spit them out without Without seed,
you can't procreate, you know what I mean? Like what

(06:57):
I used to do back in the day, Cody as
I would sit on the edge of the car poard
with my granddaddy back in winter Haven, Florida. Right they
lived on the lake, and uh, we'd sit on the
edge of the car poard and eat, you know, slices
of watermelon. And this was long before the man that
interviewed the introduced the seedless watermelon. And so being from
Florida and my granddaddy, that's what he did was like

(07:19):
they you know, they farmed watermelons and stuff like that,
so we're pretty, you know, pretty in tune with what
a great watermelon is. And we would spit those seeds
out on the side of the car poard and about
four days later the be vines growing and my grandma
would get bad. So yeah, so I guess that's why
they invented seedless watermelons, so they didn't want the vines
growing in the backyard. Love it. How about a destination
made for you? Cool? Destination made for me? I'd have

(07:43):
to say, uh, the Bahamas and one thing maybe Jake,
that was um that was not made for you, like
you could uh like is it Kardashians on TV? I
don't know what it is? Butt, the TV in general
is not made for me, Like I don't I'm not
a TV guy. I don't watch TV really ever. Um.

(08:03):
I don't even really sit down that much honestly, which
is something that my girlfriend gets flustered and mad at me.
Sometimes she says I need to relax, but I just
I don't. I don't find the time sometimes just sit down.
I feel like I'm missing out on something. So yeah,
I would say TV is not made for me. I'm
the same way. I even like I'm on a Sunday,
Saturday or Sunday where I'm supposed to be like relaxing,

(08:24):
Like I can't. I want to be doing something. I
don't know, I feel like a yeah, I want to
be moving. So we have that in common. Um uh,
switching gears. Let's talk about the girlfriend and life at
home in the quarantine with kids and how are things
going with your family? It's amazing, man, I know I
got kind of the other day online somebody like ripped
me for saying that this is the happiest that I've

(08:45):
been in like the last fifteen years in my career.
Because but you know, like as you can tell with
the with with media or whatever, they can stretch things.
And what I meant by that was is for all
of us as entertainers, we rarely have the chance to
ever be home, especially sleep for multiple weeks in a row.
Right Like usually I've got you know, three days home
and I'm trying to pack what I should you know,

(09:07):
I'm trying to pack a month of stuff into three
days and uh to be home every morning and wake
up and make breakfast for my little girls and be
with Erica has been the greatest thing for not only
my own life, but like for our relationship, for our happiness.
And that's what I mean by I mean, I'm just
so appreciative to be home right now and and and
live this life or family that I don't ever get

(09:28):
to live. And and so anyone Someone's like, how can
during this pandemic, when people are dying, you shoul say
this is the happiest you've ever been. Well, you can
take it how you want it. But what I'm trying
to get out is, Man, I've enjoyed being home and
enjoy living with my family and uh, you know, it's
being a dad. I totally get it. Will it be
hard to go back to the road life and music

(09:49):
life or are you gonna try to work work it
out a little more balanced into it now that you've
experienced what you have? No, I mean, I'm really excited
to get back out there. And we actually have some
things up our sleeve. I think are gonna surprise people
rather soon with what we're doing. Um, and it's gonna
be great, but um but yeah, I just I live
for making people smile and happiness and uh and and

(10:13):
that's what me singing songs and playing music, does I
feel like for people and especially you know, I mean
like summertime is my favorite time. Like my songs tend
to kind of fit that vibe and everything. So not
being out on the road this time of year and
playing those kind of songs for people, Uh, It's just
it feels a little empty. But I'm very fulfilled being
at home. Like I said, Um, I'm so bummed the
lady A tour changed and it was gonna be so

(10:37):
great with you on the bill and Lady Antebellum. Should
I say lady A now? Um? They? I thought, Man,
that would be Charles Dave, Hillary Jake. I mean, what
a smash of the tour that was gonna be. So
I'm a little bummed over that. Go back to the
Lady Antebellum thing real quick. Did you know anything about
the Antebellum that they were making a change. I know
you and Charles are pretty close. I knew nothing about it.

(10:58):
Actually scared me yesterday when I read Late Annabellum no
longer Like I thought, Man, did they decide because the
tours canceled that they've had enough, Like they're just kind
of part ways or what and then I read the uh,
the reason and reasoning and look, I mean, you know,
I think right now in our world that anything we
all can do to show support for each other and everyone,

(11:19):
it's not And again like there's definitely right now, um,
major things going on in our world. Um, but it's
just important, I think for people to show that they're
they're stepping up and they're showing that they want to
make a change for the better and uh and what
And you know, I never thought in my life, I
never associated Lady Antebellum with with that type of thing.

(11:40):
But now that they've brought light to it, and it's like, Okay,
you're being cognizant of it. And that's what this whole
thing is about. It's about people being cognizant and learning
and moving forward. And so I applaud them for that.
I think it's I think it's something that's strong on
their part and and that's a step towards the right
right place. With the extra time you've had recently, are
you writing songs? Are you doing like a lot of songwriters,

(12:01):
they're zooming to write songs. How about you? I've been
writing quite a bit. Um, I'm taking this month off
because I have my little girl with me. It was
full time, full time and uh, she's uh, she's wearing
me out in a great way. But um, yeah, I've
been writing some pretty cool songs and the whole new
experience of writing over a zoom has been has been

(12:22):
interesting and fun. Um but yeah, man, I've just it's
been a whole new world for me. I'm like, I'm
pulling creativity from places that I was never able to
do that because usually I'm like sleeping at eighty miles
an hour going down the road and then waking up
on a bus in the morning and looking out the
window at what parking lot we're in. So to be
able to walk out my front door in the morning
and look at like our property and just feel like, wow,

(12:43):
this feels good to be homes pretty inspirational. Thank you
for being awesome. And um, if you need me to
bail you out of jail, you just I'm here too, Okay, absolutely,
Hey dude, are you want a Peloton? Uh? No, that's
a bummer. Are you your a peloton? Person? Would be great? Dude.
I crushed crushed peloton. I mean I will say this, dude.

(13:04):
That's why I'm like like you said, Jake three point ohs,
because I've been in like decent shape throughout my life
and my career. Like dude, I'm getting like, hey man
right now, like I'm like for the last I mean,
I'm talking every single day of quarantine. I got buddies
in mind that they're like, bro, I mean, I've just
been drinking NonStop about this quarantine and eating terrible and
YadA YadA. We'll see. I always did that on the road,

(13:26):
like I have eight bad on the road, and I
would drink after shows just because it's like they're you
know what I mean. So this has been the first
time in my life I've been home for two months
and every single day I'm just like eating perfectly, working
out hard and running every single day and I mean,
watch out, watch out for three point oh well, I
feel you on that. And actually I've been working out.

(13:48):
I have I built like a little garage gym. Nice,
I've been doing that. Uh And I have a friend
has been coming over and helping me with stuff and
uh so that's been really good. Yeah, I'm with you
on like, let's let's take advantage of this time and
make ourselves the best we can be. On the other side.
We gotta all come out of this together better people,
and I think the world will be better for it.

(14:09):
So you're a good dude, my friend, and I appreciate
you talking to me this morning. Take Jake, take care.
