Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody Cast. This Cody Allen's podcast. Here we
are seems good stuff for the show on Wednesday night.
It happens from Nashville for the first time ever, three
iconic locations. This podcast will be all about the things
that we know about the show and then things we're
gonna speculate on like who's gonna win? Just pure opinion,
(00:24):
by the way, chime in with us. We want to
know what you think as well as we bring some
of our favorite moments to you in this podcast as well.
So let's roll here the Cody Cast. I'm Cody Allen
at Cody Allen all over social media. We've got Laurence Snap.
Are you there, I'm here. It's at Lauren Snap. Lauren
with the why snap to the double B on all
the Socials, and finally producer Kurt. Sorry, I was just
(00:45):
writing down that that extremely long I dress why with
the double P? Do I follow you? To complicated? Anyway?
You are at follow Kurt if people want to follow you,
which you do. Actually, Kurt doesn't want people to follow him.
That is the secret. You really want to remain a
private person, and yet you've been yanked into social media unwillingly,
(01:07):
am I write nothing interesting to share, especially now when
we're not traveling or doing things. There's no great behind
the scene pictures of Cody because all the behind the
scenes pictures are at your house. Yeah, me and like
this guest room here doing the little show, which, by
the way, it is just as pathetic as it sounds.
I'm literally in a corner of the room. I know, Lauren,
yours looks pretty good because you're in a space in
(01:29):
your house. It's like a karaoke room with lots of
cool lights. Right, yeah, I'm gonna dive bar Diva. So
I immediately once we figured out we were hunkering down
for the long haul, I was like, all right, I'm
putting up Christmas lights. I'm gonna paint the wall purple.
I'm gonna put in like this whole entire sound system.
We are still getting down in the honky tonk over here,
and Kurt is in the basement of a small prison
(01:49):
in spring Hill to I'm so glad to let you
out of the cell for a little while to to
do the show. So appreciate that. Know you you are
also in guest room of your house, Is that right? Yep?
And converted to a little a little home studio here.
It's actually a card table and like a folding chair
and that's pretty much an actually in the garage on
(02:12):
the laptop. Anyway, I am ready for the A c
M S this year happening on a Wednesday night, so
it's obviously different this year, and I'm excited about the
difference because I can actually just watch the show like
the fan that I am, instead of working. What are
you wearing pajamas? Yeah, because this is like the first
show you can I can actually enjoy from my living room.
(02:33):
So are you gonna live tweet the entire show? Here's
the deal. Usually at these shows, I'm like a madman.
I'm I am backstage, I'm running around. I'm usually sweaty
and gross because we've been outside on the red carpet
before and I'm just at that point. I'm not I'm
not a guy who loves to dress up, So by
the time the red carpets over, I'm like, when do
I get to take the suit off and like take
(02:56):
a shower? And so um, that's fair needless is say.
I'm looking forward to this year, just enjoying it from home.
Cody with lining in these pandemic times. I've got the
silver lining. Well, I've got all the costume changes ready
(03:16):
for this show. So it's like adult prom I love
Award show so much and I am dressing up with
costume changes, so I fully am prepared to go from
like my little black dress to a sparkly gown to
something with a feather. Boa You're kidding, aren't you? You're
not really doing that? Do I sound like I'm joking?
I can't imagine that you would have costume changes by
(03:37):
yourself at home only couch watching this show. Like, why
go through all that. I'm wearing a gown right now.
I dressed up every single day for work. What are
you talking about? I'm the Ginger of Gilligan's Island in
real life. You're bringing nightgown right now. Though, that's the difference.
Wait to call me out like which actually, I mean
(03:58):
it scares me to think about wearing real those ever again.
Oh I love real clothes. Like when panty hose went
out of style, I was really upset with everybody because
everyone's like, oh, I don't have to wear panty hose anymore.
But I love panty hose. I love to feel like
I am being taken care of and I'm pulled in.
You know what I mean. What's frightening is a producer
cur That's all he's wearing right now is panty hose.
(04:20):
I'm a girl with thick neck and thin ankles. I
want those panty hose on. At least have the cargo
shorts on. I can't. All right, and that's it, ladies,
Just dad cargo shorts. Um. Let's get here. First category,
Entertainer of the Year. We're going to run through these
and give you our predictions. Luke Bryan, who will win?
(04:42):
Do you think? Luke Eric Church, Luke Colmes, Thomas Read
and Carrie Underwood. It's tough r Yeah, Luke Holmes. I
think it's gonna win probably Male Vocalist or Male Artists
of the Year they call it. Now. I'm not vocalist
but artist. Uh you know, he won I believe last year,
so he'll come back, I think and win that again.
(05:03):
So that's why I don't think he'll win an Entertainer
of the Year, although he could, because he's just like
red Hot. He's like a country music locomotive coming through.
You cannot get in the way of it. It's gonna
have another number one. It's gonna have many, many more
number ones. And that voice is so powerful. So I
think he's my number two. If Carrie doesn't win, and
(05:23):
I think she will, it's Luke Combs. I think that
Luke Holmbs is like the linebacker of lyrics, do you
know what I mean? Like he's just writing great songs.
He's had such a great year. I'm pulling for Carry
my Girl. Yeah. I feel like because everyone thought she'd
got really jipped? Is that the word for c M
as last year. I mean, there was a lot of
backlash when Garth one, and that's one of the reasons
(05:44):
he pulled himself out of the CMA nominees this year.
Um and of course not nominated in this category for
Entertainer of the Year for the a c M s UM.
So I feel like just people want to give it
to Carry. So maybe because of the voting happening after
that CMA incident, perhaps people want to you know, sympathize,
empathize whatever, and give her the award, although well deserved.
(06:07):
And that's why I think there was a backlash because
people thought, man, I've been at that Carry under which
show she is an entertainer amazing, So I think, yeah,
I think it might be. I think it's a very
good chance it's gonna be. Carry So, Cody, if Carrie
takes Entertainer of the Year, who do you think it
is going to be? The Female Artist of the Year.
We've got Kelsey, Miranda, Maren, Casey, Carrie again, who do
(06:29):
you think. I think Miranda is the favorite. I think
Carrie could win. I think Marin's had an amazing year.
Casey Musgrave's always kind of a little bit of a
get a wild card. She seems to win it when
you don't expect it sometimes. And then I think Kelsey
is so good and again had a great year. By
the way, we should point out this whole award show
(06:51):
was supposed to happen in April, so the people who
voted for this show we're gonna see on Wednesday actually
voted in like January and February for who they thought
should win. So obviously a lot of things have happened
since then. And so whatever you think of whatever artists
or what songs they put out, it doesn't really matter.
It's really about what they did in twenty nineteen, if
(07:11):
you will. Um. So all that said, I still think
it'll probably be a Miranda, even though she didn't have
the number one Bluebird until after people voted she had
the album. She had a great tour last year. I
don't know. I think she probably wins it. I think
maybe Marion Morris. She just had such a great if
you're looking at you know, mostlyeen. She had a great
(07:33):
year with the Girl album, the Girl the World tour.
Um So, I mean I'm gonna go with Maren on
that one. Looking the duo of the year, Brooks and
Dunne back in the category Brothers Osborne, Dan and Shay,
Florida Georgia Lied and Maddie and Tay, who scored another
(07:54):
number one their second. Um So, who wins there? I
think this is me be the toughest category of them
all because they're all so different. Like does Brooks and
Dunn win because it was sort of a comeback year,
or does Brother's Osborne? Who were you know, incredible musicians, um,
(08:14):
Dan and Shay Again, when you talk about like crossover
success with so many um moments over the past couple
of years, from a ten thousand Hours with Justin Bieber
to Tequilap still being a song right now that people
want to hear um and such a smash in all formats.
(08:34):
And then Florida Georgia line again perennial sort of favorite
as well because they won it so many times and
again they've had a great year. And then Maddie and
Tay really representing the females in the category. Um, so
who wins for all the reasons you just said? I
think Dan and Shay will win. But how deserving is
Maddie and Tay of that nomination? They worked so hard,
(08:57):
they never stopped no matter what happens to them, what
curveballs are thrown at them as far as like the
music business and things like that, they just keep going
and they totally deserve the nomination. I don't think it's
their year to win, though, I think it'll be Dan
and Shay. I think Group of the Year though, is
a really strong contender too. This is gonna be a
tough category. We've got Lady Annabellum, Little big Town Midland,
(09:19):
Old Dominion, the High Women. What is it true that
there's a woman in every category for the A C M. Yes,
isn't that every category that women are eligible for? Hies?
That's cool? Um, I love to see the High Woman
in there. I don't think they win. I don't think so.
(09:40):
I think maybe Old Dominion again. I'm gonna go with
a little Big Town. Their show was funhomenen all and
I just love I love them so much. I think
the High Women have a great chance actually of winning
this one because they're such a like, come out of nowhere,
brand new act. But then their album did so well,
it hit number one, they had that song redesigning Women. Um,
(10:04):
you actually heard a lot about them throughout the year,
and I think that's a lot to accomplish for, you know,
even though it's a lot of stars in one group,
they're including Marion Morris. I think that there's a lot
to say for like kind of coming out with all
of that and being successful right off the time. So
different too, you know. So the new artists have already
been chosen and announced. Keith Urban surprise both to the
(10:26):
towns and Riley Green on a zoom call and gave
him the news. So we won't waste time with that.
That's already been decided. Let's move on to a album
of the So much good music has come out and
it's just so hard. This is tough. Centerpoint Road Thomas
Rhett a nominee, as well as Girl Marion Morris, Heartache Medication,
(10:49):
John Party. What you see is what you get Luke
Colins and then wild Card from Miranda Lambert. Doesn't it
come down to Luke and Miranda on this? I love
mayor Earn. I just I think Luke is so hot
a Miranda's like, it just seems to win. This seems
to win there and also femle artists the year so often, like,
(11:13):
I don't know, I think maybe Luke wins. What do
you think? I'm definitely pulling for Luke. I probably have
streamed his album nine thousand hours every month, month of
a month of remote that it just never gets old
to me. It's so good. I wouldn't count John Party
out on this one. The Heartache Medication is an awesome album,
and I've heard a lot of artists, a lot of
his fellow artists talk about how great that album is
(11:35):
um and how much they love it. So maybe John
Party throws out in the ring too. We might aso
point out also that some of these votes for an
award come in blocks from record companies, So sometimes in
these categories you might have a record company that has
several nominees a couple from the same record label. Therefore,
maybe the block of votes gets divided up. I mean,
(11:57):
I don't know. This is my guess, by the way,
is my opinion. So you look at a category like
this Album of the Year and you go, oh wait,
Thomas Reds the only one in the category exclusively for
one record label. Therefore, maybe all the votes get divided
up from the other four and then Thomas gets the
one record label block vote and wins. So maybe Thomas
(12:21):
even I mean, it really is a toss up. It's
a toss up. Did that explanation jumbled up explation I
just gave many make any sense? Well, I did come
from a record label, and I can absolutely guarantee you
that you're correct. Again, I mean, you know, yeah, theories,
just my theories. I think that category is going to
(12:43):
be for me. That's the toughest one. Okay, let's move on.
Single of the Year. Of course, this goes to the artist.
Is also a Song of the Year, which goes to
the song writer, um God's Country One Man Band, Rainbow Lee,
Bryce Yeah, and Lydia Lydia A what If I Never
Get over You? So I kind of like the idea
(13:05):
of Lee Brice winning it because I like Lee and
I'm like, yeah, But then I think Blake Shelton probably
wins because of God's Country being such a big, big,
big hit. See, I'm pulling for one Man Band. It
literally tucks my heart strings, and I that's what I'm
gonna pull for Old d Let's let's see, I'm gonna
pull for Old Dominion too. But I think God's Country
(13:25):
has it song of the Year. God's Country also in
there beginning it goes to this song writer ten Thours,
also Dann Exchange, justin Bieber You Got Girl Going Nowhere.
That's Ashley McBride, One Man Band. All Dominion shows back
up there and some of it from Eric Church. I
feel like Ashley McBride. I do too, Cody, That's a
(13:47):
great song. It's so well written. God's Country. Again. Maybe
I think I am probably really biased because I got
to see Ashley performed this at the Opery for the
very first time and we were all just weeping. It
was just it was kleenex is out sobbing. It was
just emotional. And while we're on the subject of performances,
(14:08):
let's go through some of these. Blake Shelton and Gwin
Stefani are gonna do happy anywhere together. I did hear
about Carrie Underwood performing a classic country medley. It's sort
of like a vegetable medley. You're getting the frozen section,
the lyrical supermarket. It's got you know, it's got some cords,
some carrots in there, maybe some green beans, just all
kind of strung together. It's gonna be like Suta's gonna
be like Carrie suck atash of songs there from the
(14:32):
Grand Ole Opry, and by the way, I mentioned earlier
with three iconic venues of the Grand Ole Opera is
one of those. And then you have the Ryman Auditorium,
which is about twenty minutes from the Opery. The Ryman
of course in downtown Nashville. The Opera is not UM.
And then the Bluebird Cafe, also about twenty minutes away
from downtown Nashville. That's great singer songwriter venue for so long.
(14:52):
That will be UM also one of the venues. And
by the way, um they're taping this some of this
way ahead of time. I know I drove by the
Bluebird a couple of days ago and there were huge
cameras outside and lots of big lighting, so I could
tell they were already taping some of what you're going
to see on Wednesday. You know, I'm really excited to
see what they do with the Bluebird because it's shocking
(15:13):
how small that menu actually is. But it always looks
so big when you see it on TV. If you
ever see it on a reality show or a TV
show or any of that, it looks massive, but it's
really it's really cozy. Dan and she gonna perform I
should probably go to bed, which I think is gonna
be one of the big performances of the night. Don't
you think she is so wildly talented? Yes, that one
(15:34):
note that he hits right in the middle of the
song where I'm like, I don't know if you can
even pull it off live, because when I hear this song,
I think, did you not think when you recorded this,
like eventually I'm gonna have to sing it live? And
how will I do that? But then again, Shakee can
do it because he is that talented and um and
probably drinking a lot of throat coat right now. He's
(15:55):
probably just gearing up. He's like drinking throat coat tea,
drinking a little with a little bit of honey. Yep,
he's gonna he's gonna nail it. Eric Church is gonna
perform stick that in your Country song Florida Georgia line,
also I love my country in there. I'm really excited
(16:16):
to see Jimmy Allen play make Me want to. He
puts on such a great live show. I can't wait
to see what he does with the A A. M Hi
Teddy there is making his debut. He's a Jimmy Allen.
Gabby Barrett who's had a phenomenal year. She'll perform I
hope from the Ryman Auditorium to think ud be great.
Kelsey Battan really performed from the Ryman. Let's see Luke
(16:38):
Brian won Margarita. That'd be a fun point of the show.
Marion Morris will do the Ryman and to Helen back
Luke Combs, he's gonna do the Bluebird Cafe and he'll
perform better together there can we tell all this? I'm
just looking at this like, yeah, this is all out. Yes, Yes,
we just compiled it and made it easy and I'd
(17:00):
gestible for our listeners. We're doing God's work here. Mickey Guyton,
which I know Kurt you had mentioned you think this
might be a standout moment of the night that no
one really expects to see coming, and yet it will
really be moving because of the song lyric. What are
you going to tell her? Yeah, I saw her perform
(17:20):
this at the Rhyman Auditorium, which will be kind of
like the similar, similar kind of experience as she performs
it from the opery stage. That's gonna be amazing and
people are gonna be talking about it. She has a
great voice. I think it could be the one that
you maybe are not thinking about that you'll watch and
be talking about. I'm glad to see Tim McGraw on
the lineup. Tim's going to perform, Tricia Yearwood will do
(17:42):
the in memorium tribute. Thomas Rhett will perform with John
Party Beer Can't Fix from the Rhyman as well. So anyways,
and then we're mentioning a few of the bigger ones,
but there's of course a ton more on wednes Night's show.
It starts at seven o'clock Central time, eight Eastern, eight
East and Pacific on CBS on Wednesday Night. Okay, anything
(18:03):
else we want to mention here? Favorite moments of a
c M past it's usually in Vegas. Let's point that out.
So a lot of it, I don't remember. Vegas has
that effect on you, right, it's the air. There's a
hotel air in that extra oxygen. So um yeah, I'm
(18:24):
not really big into gamblings. That's never been part of
the scene in Vegas for me. But Tito's there's a
lot of Tito's. Tito's just part of the scene. And
it is cool to go down at like any hour
of the night. It could be one, two o'clock in
the morning. You go down to the casino level and
you see like Charles Kelly and Luke Brian Trust Kelly,
(18:44):
I'm sorry, playing like Yes, that is cool. My personal
favorite is when you see like a like a grandparent
playing with you know, somebody that's of younger age and
you just assume that they, you know, this is their thing,
this is their bonding to time, and they're just like
gambling their bonding time. It's it's cute. It's cute. I
don't know, I think maybe my I mean, I have
(19:06):
a lot of favorite moments because you know, you get
to the red carpet, as I mentioned earlier, and you
get to interview the stars and that's all awesome, and
that's like an adrenaline rush. But I do think the
moments that happened that aren't caught on camera that you
just personally remember are often the ones that you walk
away with it mean the most. And for me that
that was the case. I think maybe early early in
(19:29):
my days at CMT, where I was going out there
to do you know, pre show and during the show,
and the red carpet and stuff. I remember, and by
the way, this show is done by Dick Clark Productions.
I remember coming up the escalator right there at the
MGM Grand Rubber the pool is. Everybody knows where the
(19:49):
pool is, that gigantic escalator, and as I got to
the top, I saw Dick Clark and entourage of people
kind of walking towards the escalator and by this point
I guess it was post stroke for Dick Clark, but
I got a chance to say hi and just shake
his hand really fast, and that was so cool because
(20:10):
you know, it's a broadcaster and it's a total like
TV American Bandstand geek all growing. Yeah, yeah, I just
adored him, and so that was a really cool moment
and just really fast and not anything dramatic, but for
me it meant something, and I think those are the
moments I always like remember, and particularly one that happened
around the A c M S. The A c M
(20:31):
memory that I have from last year is the fact
that Kurt and I got stuck in Vegas because our plane.
Our flight was canceled and so we were stuck in
Vegas for like eight extra hours and I slept on
a park bench and I thought, oh my gosh, this
is what my life has come to. I'm literally Hotel
California Wax Museum. We had a lot of time on
our hands. We were stuck. It was Hotel California Vegas
(20:52):
style for sure. Speaking of drinking a little bit, I
remember one year I got to sit next to Lawn
Hilton with Lawn help him post the country Countdown USA.
Not to brag, right, it was me and Lawn and
I just because I also adore him. He's a great guy,
industry leader and UM does so much good. I just
(21:16):
kept bringing him beers because he was I was like,
can I get any for you? He's like maybe a beer,
And then the whole night he I didn't even ask
if you want to want I just kept bringing him
because it's law Hilton. That's a good beer buddy. Yes,
good good stories too, Yeah oh yeah he told some
great ones that night. Um A c MS Wednesday. Enjoy
