Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Cody Ellen's podcast. This is Cody cast Hey justin, Yes, sir,
it's Cody. What's up, buddy? How are you? I'm good man,
How are you good? I was just sitting here, um,
looking at Bernie Sanders and Mittens memes. There's plenty, plenty amount.

(00:20):
It's how I spend most of my day now. It's
just going through here and looking at the memes of
Bernie and Mittens. And honestly, like, I haven't really dug
into why that became a thing. I mean, has that
man explained or I don't know it's like anything anymore?
How did how did it become a thing? Like he

(00:40):
was awkward that he was wearing very large mittens. I
get that part. So. Um, By the way, when's the
last time you wore mittens? You know? I never have? Um.
The only the only um oppraterunity that I would have
had to wear them is when we go skiing, and

(01:02):
UM we go with a couple friends of ours every year,
and oh well it's upt last year. But my my
my friend, UM and I whose ski together. He wears
mittens and I wear gloves, and so we we we

(01:23):
actually had a long conversation last time we went, Uh,
I guess comparing the two and like, should I go
with mittens next time? And you know he was he
was explaining in great detail what he loved it was.
You would have had to been there, but he was
a funny cop that That's the only conversation about mittens

(01:44):
I've ever had in my laps outside of this, outside
of this one. Yeah, I feel like, you can't really
wear mittens hunting you because you gotta get the trigger.
And he can't really with the mitten on. I did
used to have a pair. Um they were like the
gloves that didn't go all the way down to the
end of your fingers, and there was a mitten that

(02:07):
folded over and you can unfold it to shoot. And
I just thought, that's too much, that's too much. I'm
just gonna go back to the gloves. Yeah, let's just
talk about mittens the whole time. And then I mean this,
this would be a groundbreaking uh interview if we did that.

(02:29):
If we did that, which I mean, let's be honest, Cody,
none of our conversations ever make any sense at all.
Any Anyways, You're usually a rambling mess, which, by the way,
didn't um Mittens. Didn't he run for president? Or was that? No?
That was Mitts? Sorry, Um, exactly. Okay, So I did

(02:51):
like the new song, Um, thank you? Did you say
that like you're surprised? Yeah, I mean I actually you
said it like this. I actually, shockingly, I do like
your new song. I like almost listen, I'm a fan you.
It's a given. I like every I mean everything you do.

(03:12):
Is that true. I think that there's probably a couple
of songs I might not like save, but most of
them I do. I do really like well, thank you.
I think, Um, no, no, I really do. I'm with you.
I actually like this song. Um it's no, I in

(03:35):
all seriousness, it's I didn't write the song, and that's
somewhat rare for me. But uh, I heard it, you
know last year when we were all kind of at
the beginning of dealing with with you know, living in
a different world and we've all lived in you know, previously,

(03:58):
and you know, I was talking to I want to
say it was Tracy Lawrence because we were on tour
together at the time, and uh, or you know when
this all started and I get or I guess it
was a couple of months into the pandemic, and he goes, man,

(04:18):
you know, we've we've kind of been forced into this
more simple way of life, you know, like I mean
it sounds like a little house on the prairie or something,
but like we're actually going over and borrowing eggs from
our neighbors, and you know, the old school kind of stuff.
I heard and I thought kind of the same for us,

(04:40):
you know, as I was kind of thinking about it
and I heard this song and it kind of my
interpretation of the song was a kind of kind of
painted a picture of the beauty and that simplicity, and
so I thought it was uh pertinent to to where
we were at the time, one where you know, a

(05:01):
lot of us still ours, especially in our our industry. Um,
and you know, it's, uh, it's a different sound and
song than then what's been on the radio, you know,
in recent years, and I'm excited about it. It's, uh,
this is I don't know what to attribute it to, coni,

(05:21):
but it's my fastest rising single of my career, and
I'm not going to complain about it, certainly, but um,
I don't know what to attribute it to, but certainly
we're excited about it, and and it's doing well for us.
I think you're right about the sentiment, and it's sort
of getting back to the basics of life, which I
think we've all kind of been doing, um this past year.

(05:41):
Also a lot of people doing um, you know, obviously
spending time with family, your home. What other passions justin
are you leaning into over the past a little bit? Here?
What have you? I know, you're you're in the kitchen
a little bit, you'd like to cook? Um what else? Yeah?
The the Well, that's what I was gonna say that
the passion that I've I've really leaned into that I

(06:02):
need to stop, uh is eating. I'm usually pretty um
uh pretty pretty good about my diet and kind of
when it when it got to the point we were
like this ain't gonna happen for a while, you know. Um.

(06:23):
I was like, man, I just fell right into my
my southern food, um deal. And so I've I've I've
started to try to try to get out of that
and what is it back into game game game shape
if you will. So yeah, Well, hopefully none of us

(06:43):
can predict the future. And this is all such a
weird time, but um, nobody works out twenty three hours
a day like you do. Uh, it's two hours but
still ridiculous, ridiculous. I'm just trying to beat him McGraw
eventually to be to be six and look at what
you do, though, I commend you sixty, I'm like twenty

(07:06):
years away from that. Stop. I'm sorry, it is it
less than that. I am still so young justin Um,
so I am envious. Well what are you doing about it? Though?
I mean, it's one thing to talk, not a damn thing.

(07:27):
Not a damn thing, you know, if you're having fed
chicken to not well, my grandmother always justified the fried
chicken because here's how she would explain it. She would say, yeah,
we're gonna have fried chicken, but we're gonna have lots
of vegetables around it, like so we'll have collar greens

(07:50):
and fried she'd fried squash and zucchini and it's all fried,
but there are vegetables in there. So, um, how are
the kids doing? Man? They're good, you know. They we've
had moments where they've had to be pulled out of school.
You know, they actually in a class, or they doing

(08:11):
the virtual thing, or they're going to school every day.
They are at school actually on site, which is you know,
been great for us. There have been there have been
moments where they haven't been able to uh you know,
there's an outbreak or or whatever the case may be,
and and they got to be home. And you know,
I thought I had a healthy appreciation for our our

(08:32):
teachers and administrators before all this, but that is that
is certainly grown because I learned that I am I
am no teacher, um and so and you know, in
all in all seriousness, I mean we have four and
three of them are actually in real school, you know,
so it's difficult. You know, my wife is is running

(08:56):
her store. Um, you know, I think we've just us
in the past. She's got a she's got an apparel
clothing and apparel store here at home, and she's you know,
she's actually gotta work. And um, it's difficult with three
of them. I mean, it's an all day thing when
they're not in school. So the fact that the majority

(09:18):
of the time through throughout this at least over the
last um six eight months, they've been in school. So
that's been you know, it's been a huge blessing for us.
And and we've actually you know, it's looked a little different,
but we've we've they've had the opportunity to continue to
play sports and and those types of things. So that's

(09:39):
been it's been really good. And uh, you know for
not only the school aspect and going to school, but
you know, the social and psychological aspect of it. You know,
it's been really good for our kids and I think
us too, to be honest with you, you know, it's
been it's just been a glimpse into normality, uh, in

(10:01):
a in a world that's been so uncertain and so
not normal for us over the you know, the past year.
I'm glad you brought up apparel and your your wife
and her store. Um does she sell mittens there? I
don't know she she sales meant do you know it
don't really get cold enough here that I think mittens?

(10:22):
You know, So it's um, I remember, even you know
where we're from. We're probably I don't know, hun fifty
miles obviously we're west of but probably a hundred fifty
miles south in Nashville. And I remember when I first
moved to Nashville, snowed the first time, and I was like, man,
I thought I just moved like just east of where

(10:42):
I was, And but you know, it's six seven eight
degrees colder on average in Nashville and where we live,
and uh, it was. I mean, I just remember, I
don't know what in the world's going on here, So no,
I'm rambling, but it really doesn't get that old. Where
we are, we get it. We get a good snow

(11:03):
every eight years or something, you know, and good snow
is six inches. Um. But um, but that's final me.
I'm not a cold weather guy. Oh I can't. I
can't stay cold weather. What's the most embarrassing You don't
have mittens? We've covered that. But what's the most embarrassing
item of clothing you do have? What would your wife

(11:24):
pick out the closet being embarrassing or maybe what would
she like to get? Well, I guess either both. Um.
You know, I got some house shoes recently that she
she finally, I was like, I was walking around like
I I was strutting around like a bandie rooster, you know,

(11:48):
because they were so comfortable, and she goes, those are ugly.
You got to throw them out. And they were actually
a gift from my record label for Christmas. And I'm like,
I love them. They're so comfortable. Um, and so I mean,
I don't know if that counts, but she might. I'm
a I'm a big proponent of vests, uh in the

(12:10):
in the winter um and and she's she's not the
biggest fan of some of the vests that I worry.
She makes quite a bit of fun. I love a vest,
and I I feel like it's like shoes or boots,
you can make an outfit. I feel like not everybody

(12:33):
can pull off a vest, but I feel like I
look good in a vest. I don't know what it is.
I feel like it's comfortable, it's warm but not too warm,
and I feel like it's a good look. I'm I'm
with you, man, it's it's it's it's really the perfect
article of clothing. When you think about or crocs, I
think I feel like crocs. And I've got a pair

(12:54):
of those that are were around the house and they
got the fuzzy interior, right yeah, and they they are ugly,
but they are so comfortable. I feel like it's house shoes.
I feel like you get a free pass on house shoes.
I feel like you should. Yeah, I see, I have
the ug slippers that have the little the fur and them,

(13:15):
and I I don't wear them all the time outside
like the garbage out, take kids school, and I mean
all that good stuff. All right. We could talk all
day long, but I know you've got other things to do. Yeah,
I've gotta go do nothing again today. Um. You know
I don't have a job right now. So what will

(13:35):
you do for the rest of the day. You have
to like call Bobby Bones or something like that, or
how does this work? Is there other people? Um? No, man,
you're You're it? Am I the only interview today? I'm
the only you are. Yeah, for sure, you are gonna
get your people to organize that a little better for
you where you have them all like a block and
then you don't have to Nobody else wants to talk

(13:57):
to um, to be honest with you, nobody else surprisingly
likes this song. Um Cody, Um No, I don't know
what we have planned today? Um that that would be Uh.
I'll have to go downstairs. I find out, get the

(14:17):
get the day report from my from my wife. Get
the list, Yeah, get the list. And you know I've
cleaned my garage a hundred times throughout this and done
everything or around around the house that I can do
I feel like, and so maybe work out. I'll start

(14:37):
that tomorrow. I'll start that tomorrow. That's why I keep
telling myself, I'm gonna start I'm gonna start that next week.
Uh this uh, sixty year old, I'm gonna hit the
gym right after this. Shocker. Shocker. I've seen you down
there in Mexico that you know, the trip you used

(14:58):
to get to take. We used to be there this
week the TV show um, which I've never been invited
to you. By the way, you gotta get Luke Brian
to invite you sometime. It is. Oh, if he's involved,
forget it. I'll just go to Mexico. I'll just pay um. No, no,

(15:19):
it does really looks like a lot of fun. But
in all serious man, you know how much I love
you and I appreciate you and and uh, it's always
fun to catch up. We talked about it last time
we we we did this, but we gotta get you
on my podcast. I would love it again. It's like
you and crash my play. I've never been invited you know.
Well usually we established last time we did this that

(15:43):
you don't respond to my text messages. Apparently you respond
to Luke Bryan's but not mine. Cody Luke Bryant here.
I wish you were Mexico with me, Caroline and the boys. Um,
now we need to get we need to get you

(16:03):
all man. It would be it would be fun. I
would love it. I would love it. So, um, when
do you do those? Is that? Can I do I
talk to a producer or do I need to go
through a middleman of some kind of No, I'll shoot you,
thankt um. Well, we can't win ever kind of whenever
we can uh line it up. We're just about to
start season season three. We've been doing some we took

(16:26):
about a six week hid us and kind of doing
some new things on the production editing side of things,
and so we're getting ready to crank back up. So
I'll give you a show please, and it's super successful, um,
and a lot of people listen to this, and so
what just real quick, what should I be prepared for
when it comes to the what kind of questions do
you ask? What topic should I uh should get like

(16:50):
juiced up on before? Oh? My gosh, nothing, No, you know, honestly,
you know, I'm used to being on this side of
an interview, So I don't try to do the job
because you're you're a pro at the at the side.
We just have a conversation, man, you know, so just
just um the same shenanigans we do on your show. Okay, Okay,

(17:14):
well then I mean be honest with you. It's it's
the it's the same lack of professionalism that you that
you you know that you see fit on a daily basis.
All right, well listen, I've got some push ups I
gotta do now. So let me let me let's go

(17:35):
see if you can get go see if you can
get to about seven percent body fat. You're you're about
a point away. I'm an old man. He's an old fellow,
sixty years old. Mary? Mary? Is that you? Mary? I
don't know why I just turned into Jimmy Stewart, but um,

(17:56):
we should do on the podcast impersonations because I do
a whole bunch of them. Did you know this about me? Yeah?
I'm learning on this interview President. I can do Luke
Luke Bryant. I can do Jimmy Stewart. Oh, shavings and loans. Good,
it's what I like. I'm an end of your own

(18:17):
as an entertain thirty years later. Yeah, I can do
Bill Clinton. Uhc Slee's from Arkansas, not far from where
you are. Justin, I could do if I could do Trump.
If you want that, I mean I could do, so
let's do that. Maybe that's a top Let's okay, You're
