Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody Cast. This this Cody Allen's podcast. All right,
so for this podcast, one of our CMT next Women
of Country, Priscilla Block is with me. You may know
her song already I just about over you. She's a
huge hit on TikTok. I'll cover all that with Priscilla,
who is in the zoom room right now. Yes, we
(00:20):
did this podcast via zoom. Are you there. I don't
like usually meeting people over zoom, but this is how
we gotta do it these days. So great to meet you.
How how do you feel about meeting people over zoom? Yeah,
I mean I'm such I'm such a people person and
I just like love hugging people. So this whole quarantine
thing is just like not it was not meant for me. Yeah,
(00:43):
it's been. It's been weird. So I met my house
right now to imagine are you at your house to yep. Yeah.
So we turned this like little room, uh my, one
of my guest rooms here into like a little makesureft studious.
So I do all the the radio stuff. There's a
microphone right where all the TV stuff as a camera
over here. Yeah, it's like yeah, like picture in the
(01:05):
back is always like if I get lost, I just
I hear that same, all right, So let's pursue a block.
A lot of people use TikTok to do like funny
dances and stuff. We've seen all those, but you use
TikTok to get discovered. So I'll tell us a story
(01:27):
of that and how it all happened. Oh my gosh,
I know, well it is. You know, when I started
up TikTok, I thought that it was a dancing app,
and I'm you know here there, I was learning the
wop and you know, doing Kardashian impersonations like and um,
you know it's it's quarantine. So everyone's talking about this
(01:51):
app called TikTok and um, you know, I'm not a
really good dancer, So the whole dancing thing never was
going to work for me on TikTok okay um. But
I just decided to start putting up some of my
original music on there. And it started with Morgan Wallen
(02:12):
rendition to Whiskey Glasses and I was talking about drinking
toil the Quarantine's done, and people really liked that, and uh,
you know I realized right then, I was like, I
bet I could put some of my own music on
here and people might like it, and um, you know,
the only thing that I can control at that point
(02:34):
in time of my life was diving into social media.
I wasn't able to play any shows. I Everything that
I was doing before kind of like came to a halt,
and so I just decided to start feeding into that app.
And so was the song that really took off? Just
about over You? Was that the one that people like? That?
(02:55):
Really the Tiktoker's kind of love first? So no, Actually,
one of the first songs that really took off of
mine was a song called p MS and it's just
being thankful that you're not pregnant, you know. It's people
really liked it, and um people would start redoing that.
I would see, like here my voice and someone would
(03:18):
be like singing along to it. It was really cool.
So that was kind of the first one that took off.
And um, but just about over You was really the
song that, um, I had to run fast on because
I know that such a moment with it. Yeah, it's
such a great song, It really truly is, and it
(03:41):
sounds like a hit song to me too. It's it's
been number one on iTunes. Um so let's go to
the song. What what's the inspiration behind it? I mean,
where did it come from? Yeah? So um, obviously I
wrote that one. If by the way, Priscilla, before we're done,
I'm going to ask you to please do the Kardashian
personage and at some point I will build up to that.
(04:03):
So back come from. So um, just about over you?
I wrote that one in July and I had a
run in with an ex boyfriend, and I mean a
country song about an ex boyfriend who shocked no one, Um,
(04:26):
but I had Yeah, I ran into my ex and
you know it's it's the whole idea when you think
that you're over something and you're like, man, I made
it a day without thinking about him. I'm doing good
slow claps for you, Priss slow claps. And anyways, I
(04:47):
ran into him, and I had this idea on my
phone for a while, like just about over you or
I was almost over you, about over you all that,
and came back home and um, yeah it just kind
of fell fell out. Hold up to my girlfriend's over
FaceTime and we wrote the song do you find Um
(05:10):
are all your songs obviously they're pms, and these are
they inspired by your like obviously real life experience. I'm
a queen of PMS, so yes, um no, I I
do write about my own life and my own experiences.
You know, It's like, it's not gonna be sellable if
I'm saying about stuff that I don't know about, you know,
(05:32):
whether it's guys or some dude that broke my heart,
you know, it's it's definitely real. Uh. And speaking of
the breaking of hearts and guys who do that, whoever
they are, Taylor's Swift is an inspiration to you. I
know you're a huge fan of Taylor, right, Yeah, what
is it about her that you love and admire? Um,
(05:55):
I don't know. I've always looked up to Taylor so
since I was a little girl. Um. I love her
honesty and her songwriting. I think that's kind of one
of my favorite things about Toyo Swift. And I love
how connected she is with her fans. Yeah, well, those
are good things I love about Taylor Swift. She's obviously
a huge success as well, and so um Taylor often
(06:18):
talks about writing songs like on her bed with like
a notepad and like the early days. Um, and we
all know she started really young writing songs. Well, how
old were you when you wrote your first song? I
was about I would say fifteen, first heartbreak? Okay, I
guess it's real life. Um, I've heard you do these
(06:41):
block parties. Since your name is Persilla, block makes sense.
So what exactly is that? I just I like to
have a little block party wherever I go. You know,
we I've always talked about maybe just doing random pop
up block parties and could of sacks or something. Um,
I don't know. It's just it's it's a big old
party at a show. Okay. Um, you moved to Nashville
(07:04):
right out of high school? Um, to pursue your dreams.
And was that a tough conversation with your folks or
how did that all happen? They were like, girl, you
better go get them because Lord knows you're not going
to be a doctor or you're not going to be
a lawyer, so if you want to do music, you
better go do it. No, they were super duper supportive,
(07:27):
you know. I they knew it was what I wanted
to do. And um, when I decided that I was
going to move after high school, it was like all
support And how long did it take from that moment
to have the TikTok success. We talked about almost seven years. Okay,
I've been in town for a long time. I've been
(07:49):
down almost seven years. Where there had to have been
moments where you're like, Okay, this is not gonna work out.
Did you have lots of doubts or are you one
of those people who just like believe so strongly in
the vision and the dream that you were never gonna
give up. Yeah, honestly, there was definitely hard times in Nashville,
(08:09):
but I never I never wanted anything more than this,
and so I wasn't gonna stop. Um, And how did
you make it through those moments of maybe doubt Because
a lot of people are dealing with a lot of
stuff and not not everybody's dream is to you know,
be successful in country music or whatever, but a lot
of people have something they're kind of like working through
(08:30):
and they have doubts, um, you know, whether they're out
of a job or you know, health crisis of some
kind of their family. How do you how did you
sort of like when the doubts hit, how did you
dig yourself out of the hole. Well, I know I
have gone through a lot of crazy stuff in life,
and I've been able to kind of get past it.
(08:51):
I mean when I first the first weekend I moved
to Nashville, my house got broken into. Like, there's been
some testing times and I've seen the other side of it,
and I think, like one thing that I know is
there's nothing in this world that makes me happier than
singing country music. And what else am I gonna do?
(09:12):
You know what else am I gonna do? But it's crazy.
I mean literally six months four or five, six months ago,
I had to move out of my apartment because I
was so broken. I couldn't afford my rent, and I
wrote just about over you, and it completely changed my life.
So I don't know, I just kept pushing, Yeah, well
(09:34):
that's the way to do it. I hear your dog lover, um.
I have a dog Gold Retriever named Teddy. He should
be home any second. He's been doing like a doggy
daycare over in the Gulch. They have like a a
daycare where you can take him. On pretty days like today,
they let him outside and so I don't take him
every day, but on days like today, I just cannot
(09:55):
keep him cooped up. I just feel like I'm doing
him some injustice. So he went today and so he's
coming home any second now. So if he makes it
before we're done, I'll let you say hi. But um,
so you have dogs or a dog? I do. I
got two dogs. I got two rescues. Um, Bruce Bruceton
is one, and then Summers the other Bruce and Summer,
(10:16):
Rice and Summer. And he's a little Why did the
world Bruce? That seems like an odd name for a dog. Well, actually,
so his name is Bruceton and there's a town in
West Tennessee called Bruston and I've always loved that name.
And um, when I adopted him, I'm like, I'm gonna
call him a little Brucie love. That's awesome. Um, and
(10:39):
you're single, right, so the dogs are h spent a
lot of time with the dogs in Yes, I'm a
single mom over here, you know, just raising some dogs.
I'm kind of the shame boy during the day. We
got the dog during quarantine, so right before all the
craziness went down. And um, he thinks I'm like a
stand home mom. I think because I'm just like here
(10:59):
all the time. And when he is, when all this
is over, when he got goes back. He's not gonna
know what to do because it's it's been twenty four
hours a day with somebody for him, and you know
he's a year and a half now. So ah well,
one thing that my mom has always taught me is
that kids adapt and dogs too. That's great. Um, So,
(11:23):
personal goals for the new year. I mean it's almost
February now, I believe it or not. Um, I know,
you want to be a success, and I guess that's
gotta be one of those goals when it comes to
charts and radio and making all this this big dream happen.
But have you set some personal goals otherwise, like outside
of music. Yeah, well, this year is the one year
(11:44):
that I was like, I'm not getting in shape because
every single year I say I'm gonna lose weight and
it just doesn't happen. So that was not one of
the personal goals this year. Um No. I mean, I
think one of my most personal goals is to like,
you know, show the people that I love that I
(12:04):
love them. And I think it's really easy, especially right
now my life is like all over the place and
I feel like I just don't have a lot of
time and I think that's really a bad excuse to have.
So I've been like calling up on old friends and
and family members that I love and care about and
letting them know that, Yeah, I think making that connection
with people who uh, you know, you might have forgotten
(12:26):
about her just been a while she's talked to him,
that that's been I think that's been the cause of
a lot of people. I did find myself doing and
find myself even now doing that a lot more often
and thinking about people from my past and like reconnecting
if you will. So yeah, and you talk to them
and you're like, man, like you don't know how much
this means, like and you're like, well, that literally took
five minutes out of my day. I can call someone
(12:48):
and say hey, I love you, you know, right, And
then you're like maybe you see me on TikTok, right,
or we're so excited to hear about your success us
and making it and U cannot wait to support you
as the journey continues down the road. So thanks so
much for the time today, and soak it up, enjoy
this this moment and keep working hard. I appreciate it,
(13:11):
and I'm such a fan of you. And this is
a dream of mine to you even like be on
CNT so again, I'm really thankful for it. So thanks.
