Speaker 1 (00:00):
Podcasting from CNT. Welcome to Cody Allen's podcast, Cody cast
comedian friend of the show Josh Wolf. On this podcast,
we got lots of cover here, including his recent move
to Nashville, his country music friends, and his upcoming June
twentieth concert and show you can be a part of.
By the way, we're wearing like the same thing here
(00:22):
on this zoom. I just noticed, Josh, we did. We're
red and black, like we could not have set this up.
We're in some kind of boy band former boy banders
definitely past our prime? Will that could be the name
of the band, the past the prime guys. That would work. Actually,
(00:45):
um so, who's behind you? Who's in the painting behind you?
Who is this? I believe that model's name is Twiggy?
Is that that's right? That's that's my why. I don't
know if you know this, that probably would not have
been my choice. It does. It's stylish. It's stylish. Well,
(01:10):
I'm so happy to talk to you because, first of all,
you're doing this great show at the Zanies in Nashville
on the twentie. I know it's your live special that
you're taping, and we want to make sure people know
about that from the get go. But aside from that,
I love the text you sent me in regards to
this interview, because the text was do you still have
(01:31):
a show? Like It's like that's the most joshual thing
you could have sent me, because it's it was almost
like it's plausible and maybe probable that you don't have
a show anymore. And no, I know you still existed,
and I follow you on social media, but the shows
(01:54):
are it's always looks like a video, so I didn't
know if you were still doing just an audio. And
you know, here's the thing, man, since I moved to Nashville,
I have paid less attention to social media. So sometimes
I'll ask people questions and they're like, did I just
posted about it? I'm like, here think you know, you
know where we're all at. This is where we're all
(02:16):
at in our lives. If you post something on social media,
you just assume that everybody you know sees it. You're like,
what aren't you following me on Twitter? Right? I just
posted about it two days ago. You're not following me
on Twitter? Well, and maybe the algorithm is off. Maybe
I am following you, but then like the algorithm is
dictating what it wants me to see, not necessarily what
I want to see, which is probably more Josh Wolfe.
(02:38):
I feel like that's probably the that that's the excuse
I'm gonna use for my entire career. Listen, it's the algorithm. Algorithm,
people treating you like, are you loving it here? And
first of all, why did you come here? Why Nashville?
Just so you know, I'm going to write a parody
called Blame it on the Algorithm? But we moved, man,
(03:03):
because for a bunch of reasons. One it was Los Angeles,
and you know, I was We've been there a long time,
both Beth and I feel like, you know, good things
happen when you shake it up. And you if you
never turned the page, you stay in the same chapter
(03:24):
in your life forever. So every now and then, even
if you don't think you're supposed to, you got your
you should turn the page. And so we turned the page.
We knew a bunch of people here, We had a
bunch of you know, it's it's still a city with
a bunch of creative people. It's just you know, so
it had a lot of what we loved about l A.
Now I will tell you. I've been a little surprised
by the lack of sunshine that is not something. And
(03:48):
the humidity. Yeah, people don't know that Nashville does get
a lot of cloudinus. It's and during the winter, especially
for like January, it's almost Seattle like in essence that
it's gray and rainy and stuff. But I gotta say, like,
you look good, Like your skin looks good. I feel
like you look better here. Something right, I'm mentally healthy here.
(04:09):
And you know what I've been getting into, like the
specially you were talking about, I've been starting to do
a lot of I sent you that parody we did
of the which was hilarious. So we've been doing a
lot of song parodies. You know Philip Sweet Yeah, a
little town absolutely, so Philip comes and once a month
we do with show and Zany's of just comedy music.
(04:32):
That's the one I asked you that we were going
to try to hook up with lust time I've had
Chris Kirkpatrick has come down and sing a song. Raylan
Nelson Um and Taylor Raylan is a Willie's granddaughter and
Taylor Lynn, who's Loretta Lynn's granddaughter whose voices due Have
you heard her saying, oh, yeah, yeah, of course she
(04:52):
was actually in a UM. She was in a group
at one time. Yes, exactly right. What was the name
of that um? They were really good and I always
loved Taylor. I think she had a thing for me
for before I came out and anyone knew that I
was a flame flaming homosexual. Um. She was kind of
(05:12):
like she flirted with me a little bit, and then
she got married to another bald guy who's a nice
looking man. Uh So, anyway back to me, let me
ask you something, yes did when women used to hit
on it you in your mind? Did you ever see
for me? What I would do? Is I would because
you know, I like practical jokes, I would just start
(05:35):
doing I would make crazy demands. Do you know what
I mean? Like, this is what I like if you
want to be you know what? Did you ever mess
with people at all? Or were you? You're too nice?
I'm too sweet, I'm too nice and I yeah, I
know and I and I was so probably insecure with
a lot of that that I just kind of like
brushed it off quickly. I gotta tell you, man, I, UM,
(05:59):
when we first do you remember when we first talked?
I was on my FRO my CMT show. Yes, I
remember this, Yes, absolutely were, Yeah, we're getting things amped
up for that, which, by the way, was a great show.
And I hated the way they did it because it
was like any show needs time. I mean, every show
(06:21):
needs time to find its audience. And I don't know
if you had like a two months run or something
like that, and it was so competitive that of night. Uh,
I don't know. I didn't like the way it got
structured and the way it all went down. But nonetheless,
remember those conversations. But but I remember our first conversation.
Our first conversation. We were talking about I forget a
(06:45):
couple of women and talking about what we liked about
the way they looked. And I always wanted to ask you, like,
when you we're put in a position where people were like,
let's talk about these hot girls or whatever, like, do
you ever look back at some of the stuff and
be like, I wish I had just at this point
said you know what this is who I am, Like
do you ever look back? Yeah? But you know, I
(07:06):
always felt like, you know, I have a box, this
big trunk of cassettes of like all my radio shows
over the twenty years I've been doing this or whatever,
and uh literally almost every show I have on a
cassette somewhere, uh even still, And so when I go
back and listen, I make cracks sometimes on my old
(07:27):
shows about like, you know, Faith Hill being such a
hottie or whatever. And I guess I got really good
at sort of faking that or at least or at
least you know, even if you are gay, straight, whatever,
you can admire the you know, straight guys don't do
this as much because it's weird, but you can see
that someone of the same sex or opposite sex is
(07:48):
attractive or not, and you know you've gotta play it
off right. You know What's funny. I used to talking
about us on stage. There were guys in my meet
and greet lines and we will take a picture and
they'd go, hey, no longer around stuff. You know I'm
not The guys say to me, no, I'm around stuff.
I'm not gay. I'm like, do you understand how gay works? Hey?
(08:09):
You know, do you understand? And then we would like
I've had women in line be like, he's a good
guy right there, Like, I don't know if he's good looking.
I'm a guy. I'm like, you can't tell the difference
being Brad Pitt and Danny DeVito right now. You couldn't
tell the difference. If I had to say to you,
which one of these guys is good looking, you couldn't.
Brad Pitt like, yeah, it's so crazy the lengths that
(08:33):
people will go to be like, but but I don't
do that. You're like, yeah, yeah, picture. Just mean if
my hand was down, your pants are in the picture.
We should talk, but just arm around the shoulder. I
think we're good. Yeah, probably good. Back to Nashville for
a second, because I'm curious. So you got filp sweet
(08:56):
in your phone? Who else are you pals with in town?
I mean, who are are your other buddies? Well, listen, man,
I really love Philip and Jimmy, I really lovest Brook.
I really love those guys. Man. We am uh known
them for a while now, and they're just you know,
we're around the same age and we kind of have
the same sense of humor. You know, I'm good friends
(09:16):
with like Koy Bowls in the Zack's band, and know
Zach and Chris Fryer and and Clay and those dudes
for a while, and uh, we We're friends with Lauren
Elena U just a lot it. She's such a welcoming community.
And I have to tell you, man, one of the
things that I love the most about being here is
(09:37):
who I am has come out more like this comedy
music stuff. So June, I'm doing this album. It's a
live album taping at Zany's and it's on on the road.
Over the past four years, I would do an hour
of stand up in fifteen minutes of song, right right,
But I accumulated so many really like silly songs. I'm
(09:59):
doing basically an hour of song and fifteen of stand
up at nighties and nobody these parodies anymore. Um. I
wrote one like, there's kind of a couple of country
ones I wrote. I wrote one for friends in low
Places that I think is is I wonder if it's
radio friendly. I've really gone back to just having fun
(10:21):
and being a little bit silly, because I really think
that's kind of what we need. Yeah, do you know
what I mean? Like, that's what always loved about you
two is I feel like your comedy is so original
and it's not political. I mean, you don't hit like
the late night show's always hitting the politics, and I
think people don't want that. They want something refreshing and different.
(10:42):
I think people have I've gotten crap from people and
being like, you don't you don't talk about what you
think about politics or anything like that, I'm like, I
just don't know. Honestly, I just don't know if it
does any good anymore. So I get it, Like, but
what if you for me? What does good when you
come to my shows? Dude? I know there are people
(11:04):
who if they talked about their belief they would not
get along. But we don't do that in my show.
What we talked about is just what's funny, yeah, you
know what I mean, and having fun together and that's it, man,
human stuff that we can all relate to. Human Yeah,
you remember, remember when we didn't talk about what we
disagreed about. We talked about what we agreed about, right, right, yes, right,
(11:25):
I got it. Now, if we were to mix a
little politics into the song, though, and speaking of tennesseeans
al gore rhythm, al Gore rhythmm, there's something there. Oh yeah,
maybe not, maybe not, there is there is something I
think to blame it on the algorithm that I think
(11:47):
we could really get a Funky Dance too. Blame it
on the algorithm. It doesn't flow quite as well as
the original. Not so yeah, outside of the National Day
you also, you're back on the road, but you've been
(12:10):
doing that for a little while now. Um is it
was it weird the first night or has it been
just naturally like a bike you ride the bike again
or what? Well, really weird, you know for the first
couple of times for a couple of reasons, Like one,
you were just out around people, you know, and and um,
so that was really exciting and people were so excited
(12:33):
to be out. I even said one time during my
first set, hey, guys, I'm not this funny, but I
appreciate it, you know what I mean? They were just
super They were so excited to be there, and I
was like, yeah, I appreciate all the laughs, but you
can take it down one or two notches. But so
excited to be there. And for me, my rhythm, my
(12:54):
timing was a little off because I also, you know,
I came out of the gun like at a ten,
and I needed to drop it down a little bit.
But I had so many new stories and new jokes,
and I had just been waiting to get out there
so desperately. If you're an artist and you didn't spend
this past year creating well, and so often I hear
(13:15):
from musicians that I wasn't able to play the songs
for people and get the reaction. I can only think
that's the same way for you. I mean, you're not
able to really test the jokes to see what people
are laughing at. Right. I mean, here's what's crazy about
and about songs and comedy, the difference in music comedy.
And I've really found this when I started playing the guitar.
(13:37):
I can practice that song over and over and over
again at my house until it gets good. The only
way to practice stand up is in front of people.
It doesn't matter how many times you do it at
your house. You need an audience to find your timing,
to find I can get into a studio and make
a song perfect. I have to take my lumps with
my jokes. Look imagine if a band so, say, you
(14:00):
know Chicken Fried So, say they had to that song
had to evolve in front of a live crowd every
night to get to where it is. That's not how
they do it right right from a joke. I have
to come to you with a colonel until I figure
out what else goes with the colonel. It's such a
(14:21):
different thing. You know, what else is different because I
found people come to my show's requesting songs. Nobody comes
requesting to hear a joke because what they joke wants.
You're like, hey, if you hear a joke once and
then you hear it again out of the next show,
you almost feel cheated. You're like, this dude's telling the
same jokes. But if Journey didn't play, don't stop believing,
you'd be mad. As you know, and it doesn't even
(14:46):
matter who's singing. Don't stop believing. You can have a
tiny little Filipino dude doing it. And they're like, I
don't care, does it sound the same? That's what I want, Josh.
We'll give you lots of love on I want to
see you in person next, Like, I don't know if
we should like get everyone, your your wife will get Trey.
Who will you have like a dinner or something? I
(15:08):
love that you know. Beth shot a pilot here called
Women Nashville with Caroline Bryant, Becky Sweet Brittany, Kelly, Caroline Hobby,
Stevie Fraser, Mara good love. I think it's her name.
I'm only offended that I wasn't one of the wives invited,
But yeah, I listened. I really did pitch you. I
(15:32):
pitched you hard man. I pitched I really did. She
was like, yeah, he's not accomplished enough. I was like,
she said, I don't know he has a show anymore,
and I was like, what, Thanks for listening to Cody cast.
