Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody cast This Cody Allen's podcast. Hello. Hello,
it's Cody here. Hello. Hey, this is Clark down at
audio production. Do you still want to talk to Dirk's Nope? Okay,
yeah we don't. He don't want to talk to you either, Okay, fine, no,
of course I do. Yes, thank you Clark. Okay, I'm
gonna put him on hold and pass him through to you.
(00:23):
Thanks so much, appreciate it be patched through. Yo. Hello, Yo,
is this Dirk's Bitley? Is this? This is Cody? Hell?
Are you and I are in a trash can? Right now? Pay? Hi?
I am a trash can. I just assumed, you know,
if you're sitting somewhere being trash cancel eyes, you know.
Wim Hoff, wim Hoff in it as always. Um, Actually,
(00:45):
where are you and what are you wearing? I am
sadly fully dressed in a studio in Nashville, but I
can see sunshine outside and it looks beautiful. Yeah, it's
not gonna last. This is January and Nashville, so it's
gonna be gone soon, of course. Yeah. It's just a
teasing us. I will have to play this at night, Dirk,
so we'll have to edit that comment out the sunshine comment. Sorry, Yes,
(01:10):
we're a lot of echo bags. There must be a
speaker or something in there. Yeah, are you good? I
sound great? As long as long as you sound great,
we're recording you. Hear there, they're recording a long stop good,
A long sounds good? Near reporter, I'm I'm good and
as long as you can hear me, okay, let me
long a good quality there, I'm good to go. I
(01:31):
feel like you're wearing a flannel shirt. Is that? Are
you you spying on me somewhere? I am not. I
just have a feeling cameras here. Yeah, I am weel shirt.
It's that time of year though. You have my wardrobes
that that predictable? Huh? It kind of is, if I'm
being honest. Well, I did trim my beard down. I
got my beard kind of like your length now, kind
of like that, you know, a little more cody style,
(01:52):
like a medium scruff, Yeah, scruff. I brought down the
for a while there. I think I was a look
like I was trying to get Tim Allen's job on
the Santa clause. But I brought it down a little bit.
I'm getting ready to go back on the road, man,
what guard are you? Are you a three or five
or seven? What I'd probably say I'm three around the
sides and then maybe five down towards the chin area. Okay,
(02:12):
very good. Yeah, the tours kicking in. You're going to Canada.
You may need the beard for Canada. By the way,
a little cold up there, little beard, Yeah, cleaned up
a little bit. I love the lineup though. I love
that you've got first of all, John Party back on
the road. You've traveled with him before and he's awesome.
I feel like the kids kind of wanted him back
out on the road, right because they love John. They
love John and we love John, and so this'll be
a third going around with him, and third and final
(02:33):
I think for anybody to tour John again, I think
next thing, the Fall will probably be doing his headlining thing.
So yeah, I mean it's like the full circle, final deal.
He's got the main support. It's gonna be awesome. Hot
country nights. Also on this up and coming new band
that's everyone's talking about. Yes, they've been uh, kind of
snipping our tail pipes in the last three years out
there in the road, trying to trying to They're following
(03:02):
us around. We let him up on stage right now
and then, but we started this year to give him
a proper billing. They'll be opening every show seven. They
get twenty minutes to play all their nineties country, get
all out of their systems, other bits, a few other
hits from seven to seven twenty every night, and then
Captain and Danil Towns as well. Also, I haven't met
(03:22):
her yet. She hasn't come by, so I still want
to know more about her. All right, I'm a text
right now ntil she needs to combine and hang out
please and we'll give it a a little plug for your
tour along the way as well. Of course, what impress
you about her, by the way, uh you know all
the right things, is her voice is great. I love
her songwriting. She's gotta she's you know, just great songwriting.
And I love what I've heard, and I just want
to try something new and and kind of give somebody
(03:43):
a shot to uh you know, maybe help me a
little bit, like so many people helped me out along
the way. And I love that she's you know, trying
to sports me these female artists. But selfishly, I just
like her voice. I just going I wouldn't have someone
on the road that I loved hearing sing every night,
so it should be should be exciting. You kicked brother.
I was born off this tour, so Burning Man obviously
(04:04):
a gigantic kid. Um are you what percentage holy Water
versus Burning Man yourself? I'm proh skewed pretty heavily towards
the Burning Man. Um. But there's times I feel pretty
pretty holy, feel like I've I've been found. But most
of the time I'm walking around pretty pretty lost and
uh and still still on the fire for what we're
(04:25):
doing and trying to you know, touring and everything else.
But the kids are slowly starting to squash it, and
I'm gonna be, Yeah, I'll be I'll be mostly holy Water.
How are the kids doing? Umu's like ten years old, Yeah, ten,
eight and five, They're they're great, man. It's it's it's
it's awesome. Um My five year old Knox is a
(04:47):
complete wild man. My wife bought him a electric motorcycle
for for Christmas. That's smart, real smart, you know, riding
all of the house, running and stuff, running over dogs.
I sent video to Tyler Hubbard like because Tyler is
huge in the and on the motorbikes and stuff because
he's ready for the for Hubbard Hills and he's like, yeah,
judging on the way, he's like running in the stuff
(05:09):
and he's not crying. Um, yeah, he's probably ready to
come out here and get beat up a little bit.
But they're fun. Man. It's it's full on um in
my house. It's it's NonStop adventure. I guess it was
the right word the call. We're getting ready to now.
I'm ready to pull the ripcord here and go to
Canada for three weeks. So, uh, daddy's going a chance
to go uh fun for himself. It's right. Yeah, he's
(05:32):
kind of a break from other routine, I guess. But
now she's on stage with you last year singing I
think my religion right? And so do the other kids
like you have favorites of dad's, do they all? You know?
That was such a cool deal. I was playing a
show in Oklahoma and I was going to fly out
and she's like, I want to come with you, and
I was like, all right, sure. And then while ward
I was playing that song and I don't think she's
really familiar that it's you know one on my record.
She's I don't think this want. She really listens to
(05:52):
a lot. But she I was like, if you want
to sting with me, it's not you can. She learned it. Um,
you know, but I spent a couple of times playing
the guy as my band and walked out of the stage.
She never wore an air monitors before in life. We
didn't sound Sackett just walked out there and and did it.
I definitely don't push them towards like any sort of
like stage stuff. I'm not a state that I'm kind
of pushing them towards doing something else. But they love sinking,
(06:13):
and uh of course I love that. And yeah, they
all have Knox like summer on the beach. He gets
down on that pretty good. Jordan's is a huge Hot
Country Nights fan. She actually wants a role in the band,
so I gotta find her an outfit for this this summer. Well,
it was my pleasure to provide the TNN Motorsports hat
for the lead singer of Hot Country Nights as well. Um,
but it's so important. I had to find that like
(06:34):
a deep viacom archive here in the building. But you
actually started at TNN. You worked at t N N
n C MT in the beginning, So I did back
when it was kind of SEMT, ten N, c MT
and all in one building, and seem T was that
was was was growing and TENN was dying. So I
got out, let me ask about speaking of TV the
(06:57):
Fox Show. This is what I really want to know
about here. What can you tell us about this series?
It's in development. Are you part of, like starring in it?
What's the concept and what can you say about it?
I'm working on a couple of shows. One is going
to be about the Hot Country Nights. It's more of
a spinal tap meets Curb your Enthusiasm type situation. Uh.
This Box show, though, is it's kind of like a
Cheers of Nashville. I think you know, of course remember
(07:19):
the show Cheers Extet of Austin. So it kind of
revolves around this bar in Nashville, and uh, you know,
you got this great bar owner who's she's seen it all,
been everywhere in kind of like a Sally Fields type character.
And uh, just the people who coming in another bar
and trying to make it all you know, it's it's
Nashville now, it's all some more a little bit Nashville.
Um and you know, hypothetical Nashville all think about, not
(07:41):
to the crazy, busy city we all live in right now,
So I don't know. I'm working with a guy that's
uh one of the main writers of the Modern Family,
really great writer, funny and just just look over the
first script and the way you write, You're like, wow,
I can just see this on TV. It's been a
lot of fun and hopefully you know, it works out.
But it's like, we'll see. You know, I'm learning a
lot about the TV business. And it's like having a
(08:03):
song on hold, you know, someone you write a song
and somebody puts on hold. It doesn't mean it's gonna
make the record. So still a long ways to go.
We'll see. I gotta roll for you picked out? Oh
do you what would you? What are you thinking? Well,
there's gonna be a guy in the corner of the
bar every day just sitting in a trash cancel. I.
He has to have a good packs, look physically fit
(08:23):
and uh yeah and drink and drinking beer just and
that's it. I can do this, I'm say when and
I'm there, um and lots of practice and am I
gonna are we do the ice bath again? This year
or is it gonna come down the road. I'm playing
Nashville in the February twenty I'll make it easy on
it is the well, it's the bit old by now
we've done it twice. Now I feel like, maybe, oh man,
(08:44):
we're famous for wearing bits into the ground. It has
lots of life. But yeah, I'll find a very I'll
find a twist on it, but it'll involve something freezing.
All right, sounds good. Maybe you just need to beat
the time. I my first time, which was my best.
My best time was thirteen minutes, right, thirteen and you're
like a twenty minute Still, Yeah, I got a little
(09:05):
bit there. What's one? In all seriousness, dirksys, we wrap
up here? What's one personal goal for twenty nineteen and
one career goal for twenty nineteen? Great questions. I just
seems like such ah, you know, kind of dumb goal.
But I just want to have fun this year. You
know I have fun every year, but I always live,
you know, so intense. I try to really intensely with
the exercise and this and that and and just confidence
(09:29):
and sort of like discipline. I'm challenging myself with him
this year. I'm like, man, I just wanted to just
have a lot of fun, So you want to have
fun so that that's really stupid. I know it's kind
of dumb, but I don't want to like take the
governor off and just kind of and just just go
a little a little stablettle later and go go a
little deeper, especially on John Party on the tour, just
you know, just hang out that guys. The fun gotta
(09:49):
have out. So honestly, I can relate to that though
on so many levels, because I think we get caught
up so much in like the the business of whatever
we're doing, we never stopped to find sort of the
joy and what it is experiencing. I read so many
books on like life optimization, you know, and just like
trying different tricks and different things and intermitute fasting or
(10:10):
exercising every morning at six am, and this it's just like, no,
I'm gonna take a I wanna take some time off
and just like not do any of that steppings here.
And I have been so far. I've been really happy
so far this year, So I don't know, it's off
to a good start. What's your favorite book in that realm?
Like I'd love to read one life optimization. Uh. You
know that that Tim Ferris book Tools of Titans has
(10:30):
all the healthy habits of like successful people. It's a
sick book and lots of ideas and I definitely gained
a lot from that one. That's a good place to start,
and then you can have a lot of books that
spawned from that. But like that, Yeah, do you have
a career goal? Um? Is there something you want to
accomplished this year? Yeah? This accomplishment I mean dumb goals
like I just want to practice man len for like
(10:50):
a you know, four hours a week, get better than
man to lend. For some reason, I have this fantasy
that one I'm gonna be a great like bluegrass man
land player. Uh. I still keep thinking Spot will probably not.
But a career wise, I want to, um, you know
we're the big thing for me this year is is
this tour and then obviously accumulates with a seven Peaks
festival to make sure that's like the second year that
(11:11):
isn't uh is equal to her better than the year before,
and keep that thing growing. Um. At some point start
thinking about a new record for uh for myself, maybe
for the hot country nights, maybe a bluegrass record, so
a lot of music. Probably in late fall I'll start
working on in I wish the your fest? Is it
(11:31):
still gonna be a Labor Day weekend? I know? Is
that tough for you? It's tough because what's there's some
fests we're always booked on Labor Day weekend and like
you semt is at least, Yeah, but that would be
out there, So change the date, Okay, I'll change it
for you. Yeah alright, well sorry, yeah, because I look
so sorry, buddy, We're changing the day. Let's go down.
He can't come to It's gonna be on a Wednesday
(11:53):
in November. Everybody, just stay tuned. Paca, Poncho, maybe Parka. No,
it looks so great. Last year, I just hated I
couldn't be there, and I hate we keep getting booked
on these Labor Day shows. But because that one looks
that fest looks like the best, especially with the backdrop
of those mountains and knowing crazy, Yeah, at the backdrop
of the mountains, we also have like a you know,
(12:14):
like a DJ stage on a large pond that feels
like it feels a good cancoon. So it's like it's
a crazy location for a festival a lot of fun. Well,
congrats and everything. Good luck on burning Man this week,
always the best and look forward to seeing you real soon.
