Speaker 1 (00:00):
Podcasting from CT. Welcome to Cody Allen's podcast, Cody Cast.
Hey Cody, it's Anderson. How are you doing. Oh my god,
it's how you doing. I'm good. I'm good. How are you?
I'm really good. So we've met a couple of times, Anderson.
I don't know if you know this, Yeah, I know.
It was so cool. I was on your daytime show,
Anderson Cooper Live, which, by the way, I miss you're
(00:22):
the one, and then also backstage at one of the
Anderson a c U two shows. Cool tell you. But
the first time we met in a second here. But
you're just always such a good guy, very kind. Well. Thanks,
So let's talk at first about the tour you're doing
with Andy Cohen A C two Live. It must be
a nice break from all the hard news you're having
to cover right now, by the way, it is. I
(00:43):
mean it's you know, it's nice to hang out with
your best friend and and go to great cities and
make people laugh and just tell stories, you know, kind
of they're all true, but kind of surreal and bizarre
stories from our lives. And um, it's we've been doing
it kind of for three years, and yeah, it's a
lot of fun. The show keeps changing. We have a
kind of an all new show that we're, uh, we're
(01:03):
doing and it's a lot of fun. When you've described
the show, you said, it's sort of like we're sitting
at a bar and just drinking and telling stories about
our lives and happenings, and that I think is having
seen the show, is an accurate description for sure. Yeah,
And as you know, it's not just us drinking. Generally,
the entire audience is pretty sauced as well. It seems, um,
it seems like it's a lot of folks who have
gone out with their friends or wives, brought their husbands
(01:26):
or you know, girlfriends or boyfriends, and had like a
liquid dinner beforehand. Um. Usually, and then during the show
we have open bar that continues and people can get
up and replenished their beverage, which we eternain encourage. I'm
surprised that you drink. Yeah. I actually don't really drink
like in my real life and occasionally have some wine
or but when I'm around the andy, it's hard not
(01:48):
to drink, and so on stage. Yeah, usually I would
drink tequila during the show. What would you're seeing ND
viewers be surprised learned about you when they go to
one of these shows. You know. I think actually what
most people say they come away with is they come
they go. First of all, if you go online, there's
not much you can find out about the show, and
that's by design. We really wanted to be kind of
just between us and the people in the audience. Um.
(02:11):
And so people have been great about not you know,
tweeting everything we say and and kind of spoiling a surprise.
But I think everybody I've talked to comes away thinking,
you know, they go thinking Andy is gonna be kind
of the funny one and the most energetic one, and
that I am surprisingly Um. I mean, I don't want
to sound I'm not just like I'm funny, but I'm
(02:32):
surprisingly energetic. And it's and he always says, it's the
best version of myself, Like it's it's the best version
that my friends get to see. Um. And it's you know,
it's just me being myself as opposed to you know,
telling serious news. This is not a furious night. It's
just a night of phone. Yeah. Maybe that's what I
missed about the show you had before The Anderson Live,
(02:52):
is it? You know, I feel like you were so
real and able to really just kind of be yourself,
and it's tough when you're covering hard news all the time.
But I did walk away think that's same thing about
the show is that, hey, this is a chance for
people to really see you in a different light, because
you really are a funny guy. What's been I know
you do a Q and A at the end of
the shows, what's been the most awkward question you've been asked?
I don't even think I could say it on the air.
I mean we've been asked pretty much every question imaginable, UM,
(03:16):
appropriate and inappropriate. And when we first started doing the show,
accept was about three or maybe even four years ago.
We've probably done like, I know, sixty shows so far. UM.
The Q and A is when the thing would just
go off the rails because we didn't really know how
to do it. It was basically just people standing up
and asking questions, and a lot of them were very
drunk and I didn't really have a question. They just
(03:39):
wanted to say something, or they wanted to have a
shot with us or now we have it kind of down.
We really encourage people to, you know, have a question,
to say their name and have a question or else
the entire audience will turn on them. Um it's it's
like a pack of wolves by the end of the night.
And if they if somebody doesn't have a question, people
get really annoy be cause you wanted to be fun
(04:00):
for you know, if it's three thousand people in an auditorium,
you wanted to be fun for everybody, not just like
can I have a selfie? So um, but yeah, we've
basically been asked, you know, everything from I don't know
the size of various appendages to um, yeah there's nothing.
I mean, Andy gets a lot of Housewives questions and
(04:21):
um yeah, you guys are be in Baltimore on Mail eleventh,
and you're adding a bunch of shows to your calendar
over next uh a little bit until the end of
the year. Hopefully Nashville is one of those. Do you
vary the stories to tell based on the city you're
going to. So yeah, the show in Baltimore is all
new all we're doing. The show now we're doing is
is basically all new stuff that we did. So the
show you saw, um is it'll be probably I mean
(04:42):
maybe there's like five percent similar material, but but everything
else is We sat down last I don't know, a
couple of months ago and we're like, you know, we're
gonna continue doing this. We want to change it up
and adapt new stories. And now it'll probably be even
more different because of Andy had a baby, and so,
uh there's a lot of larity that has ensued already.
So I have no doubt he'll be talking about that
(05:04):
if I sit down and play the show. You mean
you were on a boat somewhere because I saw the Instagram,
which is a nice place to be writing and working. Yes,
we were both uh well it's not neither boat. We
were just like, uh, we had finagled our way onto
a friend's boat, and uh yeah, we we planned that.
We spent a week I think it was in Croatia,
and we decided to like re rethink stories and say,
(05:26):
you don't need the money, but a hundred bucks. If
you can work Finnagle into your show tonight, that I'll
be really done. I mean I can. I'll I can
work anything into my show for any purpose whatsoever. Look
back to Andy and his baby. Obviously you've met little
Benjamin's so cute is he is? He be coming on
the road with you guys or how will that work? Um,
I would love that. I don't think he will. First
(05:46):
of all, Um, you know, Andy likes to go to
a bar after the show, so that might be a
little weird. And UM, I mean I'm sure the patrons
would love it, but I'm not sure it's good for
a two months old. Probably not. Um so no, I might, yes,
is he probably would not. And um. You know it's
funny though, because Andy is the most social person I know,
and so now like every time I call him up
(06:08):
and I'm like, hey, what are you doing, He's always
home with the baby, which is of course where he
should be. Um, but I'm very used to him like
being out and about. So he's always saying like, hey,
you want to come over and hang out? And I'm like,
um no, not really, I'm good because what he's really
saying is do you want to sit and watch my
baby while I go out and do something else? How
(06:30):
How good are your diaper changing skills? Would you be
able to? Um? I have not changed the diaper a
long time. I actually, uh yeah, the last I actually
baby sat for from friends of mine from college, like
probably twenty years ago. And that was the last time
I I think I was involved in any diaper change,
and even then I wasn't very good. But now what
(06:50):
I'm fascinated by with babies is this whole swaddling thing.
Like I I guess I'm new to this. I did
not really know that babies are now swaddled, um, and
it seems like a whole thing, like they're wrapped like
little burritos. They're adorable. Well, people have been doing that
for years, I believe. I mean, yeah, I just I
don't hang around babies, so I didn't know this. But
(07:11):
now yeah, I'm fully aware of. Like, and there's all
these incredible products, like, uh, some other friends of mine
had a baby and they use this thing called the snow.
Do you know about the snooz? I've heard what is that?
The snow is like this high tech crib that I
guess when the baby first of all, has womb sounds playing,
(07:32):
and then when the baby starts to cry, it automatically
starts to rock. Um. So, but then it's controversial because
some people don't like this snow because they think, I
don't know, it's all baby talk. I don't know why
I'm going down the front. A lot of our audists
has babies, they can relate. The first time we met
was in Detroit at Ford Field. I ambushed you because
(07:52):
I wanted to ambush Anderson Cooper like Anderson Cooper style,
like he does all the time, and so I walked
up to you and asked you for questions at the
Chesney Uh call there you were coming him for sixty minutes. So, Um,
he's the greatest guy. Like I was doing a profile
of him, and that was the first time I've met him,
and he's just the greatest guy. I mean, I'm sure
you've had him on a bunch he Um, he's the
only person I've done a profile like famous person I've
(08:14):
done a profile in six minutes who I still get
like a Christmas text from him or a Thanksgiving text
or I've called him up for on various stories that
I've been working on. When you know, people I've met
who were in in a bad situation in their lives
or have lost a loved one, and I when I
am with them and I find out they're they're big
Kenny Chesney fans. I've like texted him and he's voluntarily
(08:38):
without even me asking, like called them up and talk
to them he's just the greatest guy. He's a really
sweet guy for sure. And by the way, I want
to mention on a personal level, just your coming out
meant so much two guys like me who were gay.
It was a big deal of years ago. But guys
like you stepping up and coming out. I mean that,
guys like me laid it down the road. It's not
such a big deal when you say it. So just
thank you. On a personal note. Well, thanks, that's right now,
(09:00):
appreciate it. Are you seeing anybody? Um, well, I'm kidding.
Are you offering? It's it's it's what Andy always says,
Like if if you tell this this a little insight
on Andy, Like if you start telling Andy a story
of like, oh my god, I saw this person and
uh he was punching somebody else and he seemed like
a jerk, and he will be like, is he seeing anyone?
(09:24):
That's great? Real quick. As we wrapped here, I wondered
if there was like a suitcase by the door, just
in case, like something breaks around the world with like
Anderson Cooper black black T shirts in there, and so
you can immediately grab that and head to wherever in
the world you need to be. To cover. I have
one in my office at sixty minutes where I work,
and also at CNN, and yeah, and I have one
(09:44):
like at home. So yeah, I'm and I generally have
my passport with me at all times, and like a
certain amount of like whatever medication you know, like cholesterol
medication I would need for a couple of days. And
what else do I always have with me? Yeah, like
various uh like forms of cash like euros and stuff
(10:06):
just in case it's a little weird phobia of mine.
When was the last time Anderson you butt dialed Dr
Sanjay Gupta? I don't know. I haven't but dialed Sanjay
in a long time, thankfully. Um, if it's start, I
think if you butt dial with somebody more than once,
they start to think like, all right, this is not
a butt dial. This is just like a weird stocking thing. Um.
(10:28):
I actually, but now I don't know if you've done
this later, I actually have I actually but FaceTime somebody
the other day. I and I have no idea how
this happened on my phone because my phone was like
in my back pocket, and I don't know how my
butt not only opened my phone but then went to
FaceTime and dialed somebody. Yeah, I had one of those
(10:48):
this morning. Actually, I was like, it's like six dirty
this morning, I had someone like FaceTime and like, why
would this person need to face First of all, it's
also often somebody so random like that I don't even
know why they're on my phone list and you more, um,
and it would be incredibly awkward if they actually picked
up in face time with me. So I was glad
I suddenly realized it and you know, quickly hung up
(11:11):
and just hope that they don't realize I've ever done,
you know, because I really don't want that person calling
back because I vaguely know the person, so it would
be awkward. How much do we love Anderson Cooper around here?
Thank you for the time. We really appreciated my pleasure
come to Nashville. I hope the show is coming here
this year. Yeah definitely. I mean, I love Nashville. It's
such such a cool city, so I definitely come on.
(11:32):
I would love to have you. And Andy were literally
across the street from the Ryman Auditorium. That was such
an honor to play the Rhyman. It was just just amazing.
A C two live dot com is where people can
find out more information and uh definitely hope to get
to Nashville. Good stuff. Thank you, Anderson, Take care all right,
take care. Thanks for listening to Cody Allen's podcast, This
