Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody Cast. This is Cody Allen's podcast. It
is John Party on the phone. What's up? How you
doing good? From the house phone? I like it landline
old schooline. Is it a rotary phone? I picture there
on the ranch that would be like a rotary phone. No,

(00:21):
I wish it was that cool, but I gotta have
the chord list. There you go. Um, well, thanks for
calling me. I really appreciate it. It's been for ever
since I've seen you. I was thinking back. Maybe it
was Labor Day last year at Seven Peaks. Yeah, man,
what a blast that was. Yeah, that was a fun one.
I was so looking forward to going back this year.
So what's this time been like for you? Obviously not
playing it must be kind of disappointing, but have you

(00:43):
been able to keep yourself entertained? Yeah? It was lots.
There's lots of things to do out here, um, lots
of mown and lots of projects and lots of dogs
and Teddy Time is always it hit. By the way,
You've got four dogs who will start are in the
brand new Teddy Time. They'll be up on my Instagram
and all of its socials and on ct cody dot com.

(01:05):
So thanks for doing that with with your whole crew.
I don't know how you manage all those dogs, man,
I tell you, I tell you, I tell you this.
I would get another dog. I know it sounds crazy,
but when I had Cowboys by himself and I got Gus,
it's like they became like this thing, you know, and

(01:26):
they're always together and like their calmer when they're stay home.
They're not as like what's the what's their anxiety? You know,
like they want to see if they're very They're just
their own unit. So like then we added Charlie and Bear. Well,
Charlie came last. She was like a gift from mom,
like my heye dog, thanks Mom and so. But I

(01:51):
mean they're they they're in their kendle right now outside
and they don't bark. They're just and it's really cool
outside today. But I know it was just easier. So
I tell everybody's like, I know, if it's not sometimes
not like awesome for work, work schedule and stuff. But
having another dog, it's a lot easier, I think because
they's there's a chill out summer feel the same way

(02:14):
summer is dog crazy. She's the one I want the
dogs outside she wants the dogs inside. I'm like, I like,
and we got hardwood floors and and they're like, he like,
I thinks he can grip it's the hardwood floor with
his nails, and I'm like, it's like no, it's like
so painful to hear him scratch my floors up. So

(02:37):
I have the same problem with Teddy, but um, you
learned to love him even with all the things that
you have to deal with there there, you know, in
this quarantine time, I mean, he's been my best buddy.
I mean we got it in February and we had
no idea any of this was happening. So it's been
so great to just have somebody right here with me
all the time. Oh yeah, no, that's that's even that

(02:58):
little chaotic of me trying to film them to get
him on there. It was fun, and you know, it's
like uplifting, Like we got some good shots of Charlie
running around. When it comes to this time, I imagine
you've been making all this music, which, by the way,
the brand new project Rancio Fiesta Sessions is out. It's
really good, Like these are covers of songs. I imagine

(03:21):
you saying in hockey talks back in the day, Am
I right? Some of them yeah, and then others were
just something we're like, we'd like to tackle um as
a band, and Right or Wrong was one of that.
Like my my drummer knocked it out apart, but he's like,
I've never played Texas swing before, but I love it.
So it was like a whole new experience for the
band because some of these guys come rock roll background,

(03:43):
you know, and so they went and studied Texas swing
and that He's like, man, I love playing this stuff.
It's kind of jazzy. So it was just, you know,
we were just having fun and it was all live
recorded from my shop, and we didn't want to make
a big production now. We wanted to sound where you
kind of it just kind of sounds like you're at
a bar in a good way. Yeah, that's what I

(04:03):
thought too when I heard these, and I thought, man,
right a Wrong is great. Marina del Rey just like
one of my all time favorite George Straight songs, intimidating
it all to redo a straight tune. I mean, it's
always intimidated to do anything when you're doing it. One time,
you know, we did like maybe did two takes Marina
del Rey. It's like we're done, you know, then we'll

(04:25):
kind of edit it and um, but no, it's always uh,
it's always a chore two, you know, recreate a classic. Um,
but I think we did a good job. And when
it comes to covering, it's like if you you know,
you don't want to take this song and completely change it,
but if you can make little changes, it's just kind

(04:46):
of like sprinkling on like ice cream, you know, it's
just kind of I'm gonna change it up a little bit,
but it's still a full cup of ice cream, which
which makes me want to ask, what is your favorite
ice cream topping? Then chocolate sprinkles all day? Okay? Um?
Also on here you read it Prince, which is this

(05:09):
a song you? I mean, we all know nothing compares
to you? But is it a song you were playing before?
Or did you learn that one? Man? I was just
I never heard this song before? Are you serious? Yeah?
I didn't even know sheide O'Connor did it? Oh well
it's a classic yet. But I was just going through
Princes like back catalogs and that stumbled across nothing compares

(05:31):
to you, and I loved it. I was like, man,
this is such a great song. This versus is awesome.
Like I just started listening to it and I was like,
it's it's the country song like this is this is
like something a song songwriters on me. The girl would
love to write a song like this and pull it
off like Prince did. And that's why we were we
recorded his version. H Yeah, it definitely has a more

(05:55):
masculine feel to it than the snide O'Connor version. Does
you also do it? Joe diffeat on here, which a
fitting tribute to him, propped me up beside the jukebox
kind of. I could hear his spirits sort of in
this one. Is that sort of what you were going for?
Just really a tribute to Joe? Yeah, I mean I
just think I've always loved that song. I remember it
in the nineties growing up, and it was such a

(06:15):
massive song, and um, it was just fun. You know.
It's just got that honky tonks like probably out beside
the jukebox I want to hear some country songs, and
it just did what we were doing. And when we
did this project, I was like, man, We've got to
have a Joe Diffy song. I mean, we just lost
Joe diffy, and I was like, let's do problem the
outside of jukebox. I mean, he's got so many songs.

(06:36):
But I just thought, and we got the jukebox in
the shop that has like it's on the cover, I'm
leaning on it, I'm propping up on it. And so
it was just kind of suiting and uh and just
kind of keep the spirits up for so the Joe
Dippy fans and family out there. Yeah, I mentioned straight
on the Heartache Medication album, which, by the way, congratulations

(06:57):
and all the nominations. You've got a song called Ain't
Always the Cowboy, the current single that's out and being
played on the radio, kind of a twist on the
Cowboy Rides Away? Right? Is that what you're thinking? Man?
I just heard it as um man. It was just
an idea that it was just right there all along,
you know, and Josh Thompson and Brandon Kitty kind of

(07:18):
wrote this idea that it's like, you know, it's not
always the Cowboy rides Away? And I thought, man, that's
so cool and it's true because like we've all been
dumped and we've all and it's it's you know, the
girl you gotta go do her thing or anybody, and
it's like, it's just that feeling, and it just kind
of made it into a little like in your head,

(07:40):
you're like, wow, that's just different and and and it wasn't.
It didn't even cross the mind about the George Straight
thing until people start bringing up. I just thought it
was a great um, Like, you know, the way to
put it like it for for a cowboy kind of
got to be like just kind of be like, well,
it ain't always the cowboy rides away. It's good. Um,

(08:02):
you were supposed to be married in May. Y'all chose
to postpone everything because of the virus. Tell me how
tough that decision was. And you know a lot of
couples facing that right now is like do we do it?
Do we do it on zoom? How do we How
do we actually get married? It's still struggle. Uh. We
we had to just cut a bunch of guests, not
like meanwhile, we just got like cam like you know,

(08:26):
we're playing this. We wanted to have three plus people
and have a gigantic wedding and we were gonna be
it was gonna be fine, and then the virus said
and then we had to move it so we moved
into Nashville invited more people. Now we had to like
we had to take all the guests the way and
just kind of let everybody and say, hey, it's just
like really close friends and family and we we and

(08:47):
I tell everybody's like, I still don't even know if
we could do that. Yeah. So it sounds like you're
you're planning already and it's coming soon. Huh, November one
we're gonna shoot for. But I can't, you know, I
can't predict, Like, look what happened. We started opening up
and then in the middle of the summer. I could
have swore it was like, man, the heat is definitely
gonna help us, and and I was like, it did

(09:08):
not help us. It spread more and the falls coming back.
So I just I don't know what the I'm just
here along with the whole world, just waiting. Yeah. Um,
a lot of couple spending more time at home together.
So what would summer say is her greatest pet peeve
about you? What would be the one thing that she
would like, Oh, I don't like that happen. Um. I've

(09:31):
been trying for her, but just to make sure, like
I put all my dirty clothes in the dirty clothes
hamper and not in the towel hamper. Okay, don't mix.
She's very don't She's like, don't put use sweaty gym
clothes on the towels. Put him in the dirty clothes.
I was like, I didn't know there was a towel

(09:52):
dirty laundry place, but there is? Is there something fairest
fair here? Is there something about her that you we
hope she can do better? John Summer does everything perfect?
That's the right answer. That's the right answer. She's a
great cook. So we've been enjoying lots of good meals here.
So um, I recently you told me this in the
past that you love the fall candles, like the pumpkins

(10:15):
sent and whatever's in the apple. And by the way,
they're on sale right now. I think the bathroom bodywork
three weeks are like maybe tin bucks. They're pretty cheap
and they're usually like twenty So make you guys take
advantage of that sale. Just we we picked up the
cyper woods from there, Okay, very good. Diaper's woods are good,

(10:35):
good for summertime. Yes, And and then I like today
it kind of feels fall like it's kind of bringing
me some fall vibes. I've been I've been looking. I
look at the weather oft time because he it depends
if I'm gonna do stuff outside. And uh, I mean
we got a pretty fairly cool August. Like there's one
there's one day coming up in the nineties, but most

(10:57):
of us in the eighties, which I'll take. Um, Halloween
the first of the big fall holidays on the way.
Are you a fan of this holiday? Do you like
scary movies? Do you like dressing up? What's your take
on Halloween? We like dressing up and having you know,
we like Halloween parties, like all that stuff that we
probably will be able to do this year. But um yeah,

(11:18):
I mean scary movies are awesome. Love The Conjuring one
of my favorites. Um yeah, that was intense. It's intense,
very good. Um there. I mean I can dig on
some scary movies. But I just missed the fun of
you know, Halloween. They think about it's for kids, and
it's also for adults to never forget their kids out again,

(11:41):
you know, and just just soak it up and have
a good time and dress up. Be something you never
thought you'd ever I think you'd want to or you know,
just have fun and yeah, I love Halloween and candy
right the candy corn I think you said you liked
ye love candy corn um. Gift giving also follows that

(12:01):
with Christmas coming up to are you a pretty good
gift giver? Do you shop online? Are you an Amazon
Prime guy? How will you do your holiday shopping? So
a lot of my family is distant, So Amazon does
help because I could just end up feel like wrap
it so I can send them to my mom or
my sister or you know, just give him some cash.

(12:24):
That was, you know, and nobody complains about you know,
a hundred bucks. Oh well, you're raking it in so
so much right now, you can really give a thousand?
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah really raking in here didn't have power?
Very true? All right, well, listen, um, we will get
the word out about the brand new EP and really

(12:47):
appreciate the extra time with the teddy time as well.
And thanks to so much man, and take care of yourself,
give some of my best and hopefully you get that
wedding going in November. That'd be great. Let's just let's
just get the world going to if you needed like
a d J at the reception. I mean, I'm always available,
so alright, okay, yeah, I'll keep that in mind. On

(13:09):
the wheels of Steel, Cody el off in the off
the corner. UM, y'all, take care, my best. Thank you.
