Brantley Gilbert is in the "Dawg House," but it's not what you think. He isn't in trouble with his better half. Instead, the country music singer has spent most of his downtime during COVID converting his garage into the ultimate man cave.

On this episode of the Cody Cast podcast, Brantley Gilbert pitches Cody Alan the idea of taping his CMT Hot 20 show at the "Dawg House" garage and reveals how "zoom writing" has been going.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Cody Cast. This is Cody Allen's podcast. Here's
the guy with a tough outside exterior and yet he's
a teddy bearry inside, bigheart, great guy. So talented singer, songwriter,
incredible performer. Brandley Gilbert's really was going on. Thank you
for calling in. I always love to catch up with you. Um,
it's been a little bit. I think the start of

(00:21):
the quarantine was when we last talked. Obviously, we're all
anxious to get things um back to normal and you
and all the country music artists back out on the road.
So is it happening? Are we almost there? Are you ready?
I'm way past ready. I think it's safe to say certifiably.
I'm a road dog, so I was born for it,
so I'm punished to do and uh as soon as

(00:45):
they get me out there and better. It's it's been
great being all it's been seeing the kids every day,
which was honestly, and that's just something I never thought,
you know, very seldom that I would I would get
to do. Um. But it's it's been great being able
to see them every day. But I'm pretty sure everybody

(01:05):
here is about is ready for me to go on
the h is it in sight? Do you have dates
you're looking at? Well, we you know, it's uh, it's
really frustrating right now because it seems like there's a
light authentity at the end of the tunnel. Every week,
like we'll have a couple of days pop up, and

(01:26):
then like we had red Rocks and it was supposed
to be in April and or May, and uh, get
hung in there until last week and then well just
a few days ago and then it went away. So
it's uh, it's one of those things, man. You just
it's hard to get excited. And and I'm to the

(01:48):
point now where I feel like I had to, you know,
kind of recenter my my expectations because I was kind
of setting myself up for yeah, yeah, get your hopes up,
and they call you and say we can't do it.
I mean, it's just yeah, you're right, you just have
to like lower the bar a little bit. By the way,
I love your your garage. You turned the whole garage

(02:09):
into the doghouse. Um so um. That kept you a
little busy over this time, right for sure. Man, we
had a couple of projects. It's just definitely a big one.
It's set five other square foots uh, and the buses
in it. But you know, it's it's like me and
the band guys and the crew guys built it, you know,

(02:29):
and everybody kind of but everybody had a big hand
in it. And it's it's so cool where every everybody's
been to hang Now that it's done, we've we've done
a live stream show from here, but a few shoots
we're done. You know. It's it's really got We got
a funnies first out of it really quick. Um, but

(02:52):
it's it's I mean we end every day here and
and a lot of times you know, the guys will
swing by and there's there's somebody different here and night,
but most of the time it should be Pj's. But it's, uh,
it's awesome, man, it's it's been. It's been great. We
should come and do a Hot twenty show down there,
I think, I mean, that'd be cool to be in
the doghouse. I know you've got land right there too,

(03:13):
which would be fun to shoot at. Oh man, it's fun.
And we have two or three different like well you
can make as many set outs as you won't and
I got books up, especially bringing in like a roll
down green screen at some point and it's gonna be
a one stop shop for for everything. Maybe we could
roll down the screen, the green screen could be red rocks.
If we can't actually go there rocks behind us, There

(03:39):
you go. Has um has this time been more productive
when it comes to writing and recording music or has
it been Has it been tougher or has it been easier?
You know it's uh, it's kind of been a little
bit of all those things at different times. It's like
the zoom right thing was not for me. I I
didn't I didn't do that. Well. Um, it's just man,

(04:02):
there's something about being in a room and and they're
being a vibe in that room and open conversation and
being there in person just as irreplaceable to me. Um.
But you know, we we gave it a shot, and
I did do some right, uh like go over the
phone and and I gets some zoom stuff, more more

(04:23):
FaceTime conversational stuff with guys that I'm close with, if
that makes sense. Uh, they'd send a track and we'd
work back and forth on lyrics and uh that was fun,
and you know we're we're working on some new stuff. Yeah.
So uh yeah, man, it's been uh, you know, we're
we're starting to pick up, you know, the creative parts

(04:46):
of my job that I really enjoying a lot of
the quarantine. We've been busy, but it's been all those
those parts of of your job that you maybe aren't
that stoked about. Well, your lady soon really speaks to
the moment. Hard days. You know a lot of people
going through tough times, and it's kind of true this,
I mean, the obstacles really make you appreciate the good
times more. Like the song says, so um has it

(05:07):
been the case with you over this time? Like I mean,
we're all gonna appreciate, like I know from my perspective,
getting back on the road and like doing the TV
show with the radio stuff, like in person and with
humans around. It's I'm going to appreciate it so much
more next time I do it versus um. You know
before we just kind of took it for granted for sure,
no doubt, right, And and you know it's also it's

(05:29):
been a time to kind of you know, recentered perspective.
You get a little aggravated and frustrated that we're not
out on the road to love to do, and then
you know you turn around and hear stories about photos
that are literally struggling to try the bills and just
make ends meet right now, So yeah, you know it's

(05:51):
it's crazy, man, But yeah, I'd be lying if I
you know, if I told you this has been a
blast and how did enjoy it? It was good for
me and the family. You know, you know, it's definitely
not brought out the best version of me. My fault.
You know, have you got any new ink since you

(06:13):
have in the last year, any any any of the
new normals sort have inspired any new tattoos? For sure?
You know, for the longest I think I've I'm pretty
sure i've. I've talked to you about it. Like I
was gonna leave my right arm blake, you know, I
said I was gonna leave that open so my kids
knew what my skin looked like. It is now sleeved

(06:34):
out right, it's done us a bunch of stuff on
my bike. Really honestly caught up on a lot of tattoo.
But yeah, got the State of George on my shoulder. Um,
my right arm is kind of my patriotic arm. Kind
of started with the flag and uh and the declaration

(06:59):
and then blue worked nor way up from there. I
saw you have a product as well. I think it's
called Bradley Gilbert Selects. I want to ask about this.
It's like a subscription service of some kind. What what is?
What are you selecting? Is it meets though? Is that
what it is? Is it meets selects? Well? No, I

(07:26):
don't know what it is. I didn't know what what? What?
What is it? That's so hilarious. That's what I'm going
to start and telling people. I thought it was a
box of meats, like differently cuts. Is it not? No?
Do you know? That's an idea? Though? Start setting people?

(07:48):
You know it's race here's some meat. Uh that is hilarious.
I'm sorry, we get back up. Uh note it's selecting
handcrafted items. I can't have a straight face now you can't.

(08:12):
Um it's it's basically you seem like women. A lot
of women have like subscription boxes, like birch boxes where
they can gift each other. Uh, it's honest to god,
I thought it was me a meat box, because you know,

(08:36):
what's that? What do they call those meat boxes? They
send you? Like the frozen meats people do that? I
gotta got it sends me what every Christmas. You can't
ever find anywhere to put it to the way you
said it was so classical. Are they are these meats? People?

(08:58):
My meat? Omaha hostas That's what I was thinking about
the Yes, that those are them. That's what I thought
you were. Your business was sorry, So what items might
I find in the in the box? Would there be
candles or like there actually is a candle. It's called
Blue Ridge camp Fire and it smells like you're in

(09:21):
the Blue Ridge Mountains cuddled up to a fire that
somebody else made with a grizzly bear, and yeah, it's uh.
We did a QVC commercial like on our our YouTube
channel and on our website. We're like, we were trying
to do it serious and and we ended up with

(09:41):
this like set up his camera set up. It was
really funny and I just kind of, you know, when
you get frustrating and shooting stuff, sometimes you just kind
of joke around and go off on something. Uh. I
did that, and we ended that's the cut that we
ended up using. So there's some pretty outlined thing you
get said, but it's it's basically like it's a really

(10:04):
nice uh mague we send out and there's everything in
there from knives to like some technical stuff, you know, candles,
beard bomb and then you know there's a lot of
outdoor stuff like just in kind of encourages encourages people

(10:24):
to get outside with the family. All right, Well, I
will get the good word out about the by Gilbert
Selects and in the meats. All right, Um, you're also
doing the Bradley Gilbert Trail Ride, which I know a
lot more about that than I do the Selects. So

(10:45):
this is coming up, and I love that you're doing
this for a c um lifting live at the COVID
nine Team Response Fund. So tell me about that. And
when's that coming up? Is that pretty soon? Yeah? That's
in Huntsville, Tennessee. Uh, and Whiskey Jams jumped on board
and and and anytime their names on something, I get
excited about it because you know, they don't halfway do anything.

(11:07):
And uh, we're gonna have a lot of fun manage
the trail rides. We'll we'll get real muddy, Uh, get
some players is out and have a good time, jump
some stuff, run some stuff through the mud, maybe reack
some stuff if if it's a real good time, uh,
and then have a little show afterwards. Uh, you know

(11:27):
kind of a it's a more intimate like acoustic thing.
Uh still gonna man, it's it's it's gonna be a
ton of fun. And one last thing before I let
you go. Um, I guess last night they released the
King Kong versus Godzilla movie, So I wondered if you
had to put your money on one of the other night.
I haven't watched the movie. I don't know who wins

(11:48):
at the end of it, King Kong or Godzilla. Who
would your money be on of the two of them?
You know what? We actually have a movie night to
night where a bust of the guys are coming and
we're watching that tonight. Awesome. I've seen about watching it
tonight too. Who who's your bet? Who are you betting on?
In fact, I think all you and all the guys
ought to take bets and make this and whoever yeah

(12:11):
gets it right, you split the money between you. Yeah,
Like it's a heavy white title five. Now I'm making
a lot more fun tonight. Draft kings out to pick
this up exactly along with Brandley, Gilbert, Selex Meat uh Man.
I don't know, you know what, Like Godzilla seems to

(12:34):
do some pretty serious damage um, but King Cong ain't
no joke, neither man, So I don't know. I wouldn't
really want the peace of neither one of them. But
I won't pull for Kong me too. Why don't want
Cong to win? Although I'm with you, Godzilla, I feel

(12:55):
like he's got the the fire out of his mouth
and that's yeah, that could stop be in your tracks
if you're calng right, there's kind of like cheating, you know.
But I feel like coms of mammal. So we're on
the same team. You know. God seals on the reptile
side of things, and I got like three fears in life. Snakes, sharks,
and commitment. Snakes are reptiles. So that's the other thing.

(13:20):
All right, Well, let's watch the night. I'll text, you know,
let's text each other when we find out the who
the winner. That sounds like a plan as the winner
gets some meats and hay, you know, it's probably gonna
end up like all these big ones do when they
do anything mersues anybody. It's like some kind of truce.

(13:41):
If that happen, better not, especially when they call the
movie King Kong versus Godzilla. Literally, they're making it out
to be a heavyweight fight. Yeah yeah, someone's gotta win.
There can't be a tie, noire. Brently, thank you for
the time. Always great to catch up with you. Yeah,

(14:01):
that was a good one. That's that's that was probably
gonna stick to see you later. This has been Cody cast.
