Speaker 1 (00:00):
Podcasting from Welcome to Cody Ellen's podcast. He is of Florida,
Georgia line the Florida Side. Brian Kelly is my guest
with a new EP out called b K's Wave Pack.
Let's get to all of it here with Brian online.
And how you doing, Man? I cannot complain, dude, I'm
(00:21):
just man, just kind of kind of been a little
bit busier, a little bit more normal things. Uh. We
had a little f g L. I don't even know
if I can say it, but we did a little
I don't even know if I can say it, but
we I don't know if I can announce, but we did.
We did a show the other night, I will say that,
and that that was amazing and we we even got
to rehearse for it, and that was that was just
(00:41):
a night I think us, our band, our crew we
needed and I can't wait for the fans to hear
how we did it and they'll all get a chance
to see it. And so in terms of that, that
was awesome. And then you know, we've we've both been
mixing in our solo projects and collaborations in and around
f gls UF. We also shot a the music video
(01:02):
for a little bit with Nellie a couple of days
ago as well. So man, we're just all sorts of
busy kind of and it's just it's amazing. Man. I'm
just very grateful and uh yeah, we're all excited to
get get get cranking, you know. Yeah, I take that
um show I do with you at f GL house.
I don't know. A couple months ago, it was like
to me cathartic, just like therapeutic, just to see like
(01:25):
live music being played by you guys in your band,
and like I've just been so long. Music is healing.
I think we all know that, man, And it's it's
it's also more than that too. It's it's such a
you know, music is the soundtracks to it to all
of our lives. Man. I mean whether we're driving to
work or fishing or whatever, there's always music going, you know,
And so it has so many it can hit so
(01:46):
many points. You know, it can be spiritual, it can
be fun, it can make you cry, especially country music.
All the stories and all the truth and all the
authenticity in these songs, and said, that's why it's so powerful.
And man, i I'm with you man, you know me
of my wife down here in Florida. We went to
a restaurant the other night. They had a little local
live band going, you know, and even that was just amazing.
(02:08):
It was like instant therapy. Man. It was like a
normal like music, live music and just a little crowd
and it was it was cool. Man. So I know,
on a on a even on a bigger scale, once
everybody starts touring and we all get out, it's just
gonna be a big party like we've never probably ever seen.
You know. Well, these songs in the Wavepack, I'm glad
you brought spiritual because I feel like they take me
to kind of a spiritual place too. And maybe that's
(02:31):
the same with you. I feel like you're letting a
little bit of your soul out with this project, am
I right? Man, I really appreciate you saying that, Cody
that means a lot. And uh, you know that's funny
because I've been kind of calling these songs these solo
songs are kind of my soul songs, you know. And um,
you know, we've been writing for years and we first
moved to town as songwriters and and just you know,
(02:52):
when I started writing for this project, that was I
kind of took a different headspace and mindset and just
really allowed these idols and these these co writes to
kind of happen, you know, and and um, I don't know, man,
a lot of these ideas just kind of came through
me in my quiet time with the Lord and journaling
(03:12):
and just trying to connect, you know, with with God
and myself, my higher self and figure out the next
what do the next couple of years look like? What
is the next step for me? What is the next
step for us? And all these things, man, And so
I'm just I'm grateful to have this outlet and and
just right what you know, right, what I know and
what I'm living and so uh yeah, man, I think
(03:34):
with that comes you know, some spiritual songs and just
kind of what I'm going through, what I've been through,
and where I'm out in life. And I think that
that is what country music is. So I'm just you know,
I'm just pulling from from my life. God definitely gave
you the lyric, um was it? John Wayne on the Waves?
That's a godly that came from heaven above and some
(03:56):
tooth on my Bolo's probably it's probably came straight front
from there to man, but so clever. They'll all these
songs you're saying, and they they're great for the summertime too.
So it's just perfect. And it's called the wave pack
and you being the Florida side of Florida Georgia line,
it all kind of makes sense. So um, with summer coming,
people head back to the beach. What are like your
(04:16):
fondest memories of being by the water as a kid? Oh, man,
I mean we were always by the water. You know.
I grew up on the Tumoca River in Ormond Beach,
Lucia County, and so we were either on the river
or you know, uh, tubing, knee boarding, um, hanging out
with manatees. You know, it was awesome. Or we'd we'd drive,
(04:38):
you know, ten minutes to the beach and you know,
building sand castle's, boogie boarding, a little bit of surfing
once I got a little bit older. Um, but just
just being around friends, just just enjoying the outdoors. Man.
I've always been very connected to nature and the outdoors
and whether I'm fishing or sitting chilling with friends or
being being in the elements like boogie boarding, skin boarding, um,
(05:00):
and and then mixed in obviously a ton of baseball.
That that was that was my life, you know, and
so uh yeah, man, that's just being I mean, as
soon as you get your feet in the sand, you know,
it's that's another form of therapy, I think for me
and for a lot of us. You know, here in
the waves, crash gets your toes in the water, you know, um,
just that it's just it's it's the simple things, man,
(05:21):
you know for sure are you a do you burn
or do you tan? When you go to the beach.
You know, I gotta be real careful. It's it's a
little bit of both. The cody. I always thinking that about, yeah,
maybe you had to be careful with the SPF and
like douse yourself in it a little bit because of
your know. Once I'm in yeah, once I'm in full
swing of the season, you know, I can I can
stand more, and I've got a nice layer. But an
(05:43):
amateur Florida boy move is to get absolutely fried and
then you're out for a week because you're you're peeling
and you know that whole thing. So you know, I
honestly funny thing is, you know, I grew up in
a sunscreen family, so my dad had his own company
HT Marketing of Florida, and he would distribute Hawaiian traffic products,
so he would buy straight from Hawaiian traffic than his
(06:05):
His territory was like at one point in Jacksonville then
it was the panhandled Panama City, you know. So um,
I'm a you know, I've always been. I was raised
to put a sunscreen on and kind of protect ourselves,
and so I still I still try to do that. Man.
It's it's smart, you know. The sun is uh is
not something to mess with. I love a good time.
I love getting a little burned, but you gotta be careful,
(06:26):
you know when it comes to the EPs four songs here?
So is there a bigger project waiting? Is there more
to come like this? Are you just gonna do like
I mean everyone's doing like EPs or singles these days?
So yeah, what's your vision? Yeah, I've got a whole
album coming and uh, I hadn't had an announced of
the date. I've got it picked out, but I'll say
it'll be here just in time for summer. Uh to
(06:48):
get this thing going, so kind of putting the finishing
touches on it right now, kind of tweaking some mixes
and I'm shooting a bunch of videos for the songs
and trying to have you know, as much visual content
as I can, and just, um, you know, I think
the videos I've been shooting with this director, Ben Christians
and he's from Arizona. He's really bringing my brand and
my vision and just these songs to another place. And
(07:10):
I'm really excited about that. And then I also got
to say I shot a short film music video for
my song boat Names that will be on my album
with with a girl named Bethany Wolf. She's an amazing
director writer, and she wrote this. Yeah do you know her? Yeah,
I did a movie with her. I did Forever My Girl.
I was in there. Yes, that movie is freaking incredible, dude,
(07:34):
She's amazing. So she wrote this treatment, the script for
boat Names, this song that's coming on my album, and
it had me in brittany and tears. I mean, it's
it's powerful and and so we shot that last week
and here in Florida, took three days to do it. Man.
It's it's just a really special special project and I
really can't can't wait to share the rest of my
soul songs with everybody, and and um, yeah, man, It's
(07:56):
just it's really fun time to be creative. And you know,
all of us artists and and and everybody in the world,
we've never had this much time as we had this
past year. And I just kind of felt a creative
rebirth and then then an outpouring of just um, you know,
support and creativity and and just felt like the floodgates
were kind of opening, and I just wanted to make
(08:17):
sure that I was making the most of the opportunity.
Wants got to open the door with the wavepack and
your bread of clothing Tripe, Kelly, you run with your
wife and friends. Um, is there any swimwear coming related
to the actually in trip Kelly, I don't know. Yeah,
We've we've got some swimwear here. Yeah, we've got some
(08:38):
board shorts for guys, and we've got some bathing suits
for girls. I've got some beach cowboys, some some solo
merch coming. I'm I'm checking on. I'm kind of making
last notes on those rounds right now, and um, they're
really really cool. I can't wait for everybody. I've got
some you know, long sleeve UV shirts and tank tops.
I've got some flags coming. That's gonna be really fun
(08:59):
and some cure. He's all the goodies, man. So it's uh, yeah,
you're you'll, you'll be well stocked. Cody. I'm gonna have
to send you something. Please send me a box. I
will wear the I'll wear the crap out of it.
I will well coming up, they don't have the fourth July.
So are you a big griller this time of year? Yeah,
i'd say. You know, my wife and I we we
(09:20):
really got into cooking the past year. We we've always
kind of enjoyed it. We've we've always been a little
bit busier, but having some more time, man, we've really,
you know, really enjoyed diving in and cooking and being
really involved and getting creative with it too, you know what,
kind of pinterest some ideas and then kind of making
our own and say, hey, what are you in the
mood for tonight. So it's definitely grilling season right now.
(09:41):
I can't wait to grill. Uh, you know, I love
doing it on the big Green egg. That's probably my favorite.
It's a little sportier than just like a normal gas grill.
And I haven't messed around with the trigger. Um, I
want to try that. I think that's that's amazing. But
I love the green egg, love love doing fish on it.
Uh steak our fire as well, chicken obviously. Um, but
(10:03):
big Fourth of July guy here man. You know Fourth
of July down here where we live in Florida, everybody
gets up at about four o'clock and gets their truck
and they're set up and their whole you know, chairs
and coolers, gets their whole tent. Everything's set up for
the day at like four, So you've got to get
your spot early. Fourth of July is a very big
deal around here. Yeah, the past couple of years we've
(10:26):
been getting up early and joining everybody and just kind of,
um yeah, celebrating. You know, there'll be a great, huge
Nashville celebration to downtown this year. They're actually gonna do
it with um I think Bratt Paisley is playing. I mean,
I just cannot wait for it, all of you back
fireworks and the whole thing. So yes, yes, um, let's
(10:46):
see real quick FTL question. I know life rolls on
is out right now? Long live kind of a country anthem. Um,
take me back to writing Long Live Well. We were
on tour in twenty nineteen and uh we were on
the bus us and you know, it's one of those
that that's a song that started with the title a
title and in a track. Um. I remember David Garcia
(11:10):
came in with, uh that track and it sounded he
had that little no, no, he had that little lick
in the intro and the track was already fire and
already was I think, we're like, yeah, that's let's write
to that. And then somebody throughout the title long Live.
And it was just one of those songs man, you
just kind of fill in the gaps with just real
(11:31):
life moments and stuff that you know, like Walmart parking
lot and just you know, take take this play on
words of long live, Hey, long live all these things
that we love, like nights like this. Just don't don't
overthink it, don't make it something that it's not. And
you know, before we knew it, we had a song
and uh yeah that was that was probably a quick
(11:52):
one of the quicker days of some of the songs.
You know, they're not always that easy. They're not always
you know, they don't always take an hour and a
half or two hours. Sometimes it's six hours, or sometimes
it takes a couple of days. You know, so no,
just just thankful that that song is connected so well
and obviously pretty weird that we really haven't got to
play that that that went number one on country radio,
(12:12):
and we never got to play that live for for
an audience and on tour, which is nuts, man. So
I just can't wait to see the the feedback, you know,
in the connection once we get back out there, and
and I think it'll be even even next level, you know,
but if everything is to tell stories about when big
artist like yourself who are just like mega mega stars, um,
(12:33):
when I first either met them or something weird or
interesting happened in like the first few months of knowing
And I'll never forget you come up up to me
at the y m c A the old y Maryland farms.
I think, yeah, dud, And uh, when's the last time
you've been there? Man? Probably the last time I saw you? Man,
(12:54):
the last time I was there. Uh it was me
and Brittany were there, because you know, I saw you there,
and then I hadn't been there in a while. And
then when me and Brittany went back, I guess my
membership had expired or something and they were trying to
get me. They literally told me. I was like, hey,
I just need to renew. I used to come here
obviously you can see that. They're like, no, we have
(13:16):
to give you a tour before you can go work out.
And I'm like, hey, you don't understand, like I've been coming,
like this is my gym. I've just been gone. We've
been traveling, like I know where everything is, Like I
don't need a tour. And then it was ridiculous. So
I just I think I ended up leaving because I
didn't want the tour. I just wanted to work out,
you know. But uh yeah, I definitely go back to
(13:39):
the Maryland Farmadas. That's like one of my first visions
of you, Cody is the is the why it. Luke
Brian there one time too, and this was like early
on when I first moved to Nashville and he was
like just starting out. But it's like it's so interesting
to see like again, these mega stars, who are you know?
(13:59):
You went all the awards, You're on the big stage.
Now you fill up arenas and uh stadiums. Now, It's
like how fast it changes? You know? That's crazy, man?
That is it? Really? It really did happen fast? And
you know what I think it's funny, you know. I
think we're all at the gym or whether we're whether
you're fishing or doing you we're always dreaming, all of us,
(14:20):
no matter what you do, you know. And so like
when you're putting in work at the gym, or you're
putting in work on your craft or whatever, men you're
you're sometimes not there, like you said, you're seeing people
that are putting in the work. And so I think, um, yeah,
it's just important to stay no matter what you do,
stay true to like what your vision is and and
go get that. Man. I think your story here and
you say that as cool man, because at the time,
(14:41):
I don't. We didn't have a ton going on for us.
You know, we were we were grinding, and you know,
I remember being at the gym just thinking about the
set list and dreaming about this or dreaming about that.
And I think that's what keeps you going, man, And
like it's taking time for yourself to work on yourself
and and physically and mentally, you know, and and and
allow and yourself to grow and and chase those dreams.
(15:03):
You know, you've been a good friend to me over
the years. Obviously we know each other pretty well. But
I I gotta say, like you and Tyler for that matter,
nothing has changed. You're still the same nice guy as
you were in the beginning, and I just that means
a lot to me. So thank you for always being
a friend. And congratulations on all the the good stuff
going Brian. Dude. Back at you, man, You're as real
as they get and it's awesome to know you and
(15:26):
you're you're a hustler man. It's always great to see
you smiling, killing the game man. And just thanks for
always making always making time for us, dude. And you're
always so great to artists man, and just um just
help them blow our voices up. So thank you. Trying,
I'm trying. It is if you would just joined a
spinning class at the why that'd be that would be
you'd probably help you. But okay, you know I know
(15:52):
where to go. I'll call you. Okay, you know where
all this stuff is? Um, good stuff, Thanks Brian, take care.
