Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Cody Ellen's podcast. This is Cody Cast. Gentlemen,
It's it's Shane. I mean, what a day. I mean
to be talking to you on Dan's birthday? What is
going on about that? Man? What a birthday gift? How
are you? Man? Happy? Happy birthday? Happy happy. I used

(00:22):
to work at Olive Garden. That's how we did it. Happy.
So yeah, how are you? How's the birthday so far?
What do you expect from well from from the day.
Fantastic so far, man. A lot of good things happening
to us, no pun intended. We got the number one
song in the country right now, the album sending a
number one, and may we got a new single going
to country radio, so hopefully most Saturday country radio. That's

(00:45):
the goal. I put it out there, you know, on
Facebook this morning. You know that's where I'm preds with
a lot of country radio folks. I was like, Hey,
it's my birthday. You know you want to give me
a gift. Maybe an ad would be great, so that
that would be a wonderful, wonderful President. We'll tell us
about still My Love because I feel like it's going
to be one of those songs. It's fun to perform live.
Am I right, yeah, man, that's you know, that's one
of the reasons we picked it as a single. We're

(01:07):
going back on the road, you know, things are opening
back up, the arena, tours happening, and you know, it
was just one of those ones that we would listen to,
we would feel good, everybody would smile and listening to it,
and just you know, we knew it would pop off
at the show, and we did it for the first
time and naturally the other night, and the song had
been out for like eighteen hours, and as soon as
we jumped into that first note, people were singing along
and and dancing, and uh, you know, it was exactly

(01:28):
kind of what we'd expected and more. And uh, man,
I heard it on the radio the other day for
the first time, and it's like nothing quite like that
feeling to hearing your song on the radio for the
first time. But this one, there's just something different about it. Man,
It's got I don't know, I feel like it was
made for the radio. And man, we're we're pumped that
it's out there now. When it comes to doing these
shows coming up soon, Um, what part of the show,
Shaw do you look forward to most and maybe least

(01:52):
least meaning oh my god, I've got to sing that song,
gotta hit that note. When it comes to the live shows,
we're honestly yeah, it might be the same song like
right now, it kind of eds and flows. It changes
for me. Um, just because I'm probably a d D anyway,
and I like, you know, I look forward to things,
and I think, right now I should probably go to bed.

(02:13):
It's probably what I look forward to the most. Um.
After the first time we played it, it was just
absolutely electric. It was a tribal this thing along. It
reminded me of when Tequila was at its peak, you know,
it really just they were singing it so out, and
I think I look forward to that the most. Uh.
But it's also the hardest song to sing because it's
got that massive high note in there. But uh in

(02:36):
Good Things is also a hard one to sing. But
it's also one of my favorite to do a live
so you know, you can't have one without the other.
I feel like I like a challenge. But for me,
you know, what I look forward to the most is
probably the most challenging. This is miserable, but oh well,
congratulations and good Things is already gold, which is like
a record for you know, in the streaming era. So
tell me about tell about this this album, because it

(02:59):
sounds like you ex in with some new sounds. It
was it was that sort of the goal to go
some more different. Man. Listen, like, we owe its country
radio to our fans to keep raising the bar, to
keep pushing ourselves. And you know, having all the extra
time on our hands during the pandemic, you know, away
from the road, allow us to to leave no stone
less unturned. You know, we tried everything, would finish the
song or finish the mix, and then slip it on

(03:21):
its head and try something completely different. And I feel like,
I don't know that yielded some good results for us,
and I feel like it's got a lot of diversity
on the album. And you know, obviously we didn't alienate
what got us here in the first place, you know,
our harmonies and our vocals. But we tried some different
sounds and we mixed it up, and I think that
really bodes well for for making a you know, a
great show, you know, our arena tour. We're able to

(03:42):
twitch some things up to change it up right, some
different fields if you need, you know, moments in the
set moments in the album and and we're super proud
of it. We feel like there's no two songs on
the album that are the same. And I don't know,
I just think, you know, it's a it's a new
chapter for us. It's fresh and uh and it feels
good if finally get it out there. The response has
been amazing so far. And I think it's not good

(04:03):
things itself. It's kind of just like a representative of
the rest of the album. You know. It's got a
little bit of those elements. It's got the big, bombastic drums,
but it's still got the tender shave, local vocal performance
and um man, it's you know, we're excited about all
of it. Glad You Exist is already number one. So
telling about some things you could not live without, things

(04:23):
you're glad that exists, like a technology or a modern
convenience maybe that you couldn't live without. What would that be?
Oh man? I obviously you know, let's side from our
families and our pets. I would say for me and
my golf clubs, it's not necessarily technology. I guess it
is technology to be but I have found great solace

(04:45):
in peace in playing golf, and if I lost those
golf clubs, it would be pretty dark. And golf clubs
are expensive, so I really wouldn't want to have to
buy anymore. An article of clothing you're glad that exists,
something you couldn't live without. Oh, an article of clothing.
Let's see, I've got these like old man pair of

(05:05):
like Nike sweatshorts that I wear literally every day, especially
during the pandemic, where I like, you know, didn't try
on jeans. I honestly didn't know if they still fit
after you know, months and months off the road. But yeah,
I was just like, wake up four or thirty am,
brother sweatshorts on, go to the studio and work until
two am, and then repeat. Yeah, And how about it

(05:26):
a favorite actor, actress, someone you couldn't live without it
that you're glad exists. And don't say the Rock because
I know that's your go to and that's my Well,
now you're taking away my answer, Cody, that's very It's
funny that you mentioned the Rock because Dan and I
actually have a favorite video of his and I literally
just I literally haven't pulled up on my phone right
now because that was lausing a video of the Rock

(05:48):
and um, yeah, I don't know the favorite actor. That's
a tough one for me. Maybe maybe right now maybe
Reese with Uston just continuing on, doubling down if you will.
You're still trying to get in that barbecue, aren't you? Yeah,
still kind of getting that barbecu you after I after
I was embarrassing, embarrassingly admitted my crush. But I really

(06:10):
like the guy from Chris Pratt. It's probably one of
my favorite actors as well. Hard not to love that
guy a real quick. Let's talk about the boys, Astro
and aims a little bit shay, Um, what's new in
their world? Any obsessions are kind of into at this moment.
Besides the ball in the living room. We know about that, yeah,
you know. And Astle just got a job as a
professor at a college, so it's pretty exciting. Um, he's

(06:31):
teaching a magic school about history. It's pretty good. It's
a pretty good class. Um man. He's uh, act is
getting so big and it's very crazy to me, you
know how He's just they get bigger every single day
and time just goes by so quick. And honestly having songs,
you know, like one direction. I've really been listening to
a lot lately. He kind of makes me tear up
every time I think about it, because, you know, I

(06:52):
look at him and it's just every single day it's
something new, and it's just it's it's a crazy thing
watching them grow up. But man, so thankful to have
the time that we've had, you know, with me and
Hannah and the boys. Just being able to be home
and actually get up with them every morning, and which
is not my favorite part because I'm not a morning person,
but when they wake up, but you know what I'm
seeing names at like four thirty in the morning, it's

(07:13):
it's all worth it. But he, you know, he looks
up at me and I'm like, man, this is this
is the greatest. But it's after Actually it's visiting her
mom for the first time. He just went home a
couple of days ago, and it's visiting the farm. So
he is not home right now, and it is very quiet,
and it reminds me of what what life would be
like without him, and it's it's very quiet, but it's
not near as exciting. Yeah, Dan, real quick, I know

(07:34):
with the dogs. We love to see the dogs. By
the way, you're always postingly you know, adoptions and so on.
You and your wife? Will the dogs be dressing for
Halloween this year? Have you even thought about that yet?
We have like two massive, massive containers in our garage
with dog costumes. Um, and I have like literally no
human costumes. I don't know. It's always a scramble to
dress up on Halloween. UM. I don't know. But my

(07:56):
wife just came home from the story the other day
and already had Halloween Andy. He got like, rees is
like the ghosts little guys, And I was like, wow,
it is August and Halloween. Danny is out. That is
bad news for me and my body. Listen, love you
guys so much. Dan, enjoy the Olive Garden a gift
card I'm sending over right now. UM, I'm here for
the bread sticks, Cody. I'll be still on that sure,

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
