Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, everybody, Crook and Chase here, Welcome to Nashville Chats
San Today we are bringing on one of our favorites.
This is the guy that's always so much fun in
interviews because he's always got so much going on, and
of course any one of those could take a left
turn at any moment.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
It did a few times on this one.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
So Jordan Davis, I mean, this guy's life is insane.
So he has this new album called Learn the Hard Way,
which he's learned a lot of things the hard way out. Yeah,
he has a new baby, Baby number four. He has
another hit single right now bar none and Charlie. You
(00:37):
spotted him in his backyard singing to his chickens.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Well, I guess there's a reason for it. Shall we
try to find out as we visit with Jordan today.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah, this conjures up all kinds of questions. So let's
see how Jordan takes a stand here. You are so
blessed to have already checked off so many bocks. Is
platinum album, string of number one singles, multiple awards, touring globally,
(01:08):
working with other superstars. My gosh, with all of this accomplishment,
how in the world do you approach a new album
like this.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
I know it was kind of a it was it
took a little bit to see what we wanted to do. Yeah,
you know mainly and I know you've heard you have
your whole life to make your first record, and then
the second record is really like all right now, who
am I? And nobody really ever talks about the third,
so I kind of had to just be like, you
(01:40):
know what I want to do and I say this,
I wrote this down in a notepad I have at
the house. It's like, you know, kind of the goals
of it. And it was like, not that I didn't
have fun making the past records, but one of the
first things I said was I want to have fun
writing them. I want to have fun recording them, and
I want to have fun singing them and feel like
(02:00):
we did that with a lot of these these songs.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
So we'll have fun, fun fun women.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
It's fun fun, they think Steve bur later, but uh yeah,
So like I wanted to do that. And the second
one was I wanted to take some risk and be
okay with them falling flat on on not working out.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
So what's the rest do you think?
Speaker 3 (02:24):
I think? You know? And I was meaning that by
like sonically stylistically, you know, I'd go to Good Going
Bad or Louising Stick thinking of that one and say like,
you know, I've never done anything like this before. This
could go great, or somebody could listen to this and
be like what is this guy doing? Uh? And so
you know, at the end of the day, I knew
(02:46):
that if I could keep going back to that notebook
and being like, all right, we had a good day
in the studio. It was fun. We had a rehearsal,
we played these new songs. They're fun to play. I
checked that box, and I feel like I checked They're
kind of taking some risk on. So that's how I
approached going in the third record.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
I Love Lucy ansticking to run by You.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Oh yeah, yeah, absolutely, Okay.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
The name of the album was learned the hard way.
The first song is her Way or the Highway. It
just screams you're married.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yea true? Since the guy gets out of it that way.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
You know, Jordan, you're mean for saying it's true.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
I know. All right, let's bring kristin into the picture here.
When it comes to songs like this, well any song okay,
and we get varied answers. Whenever we ask this, do
you ask her opinion on lyrics, demos, input on anything
you're going to record, or do you record it and
then throw it at her and see what do you think?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
I used to ask on demos, and then I was like,
you know what, this is not getting us anywhere because
I love this song and you're super fixated on this
second part of the second verse. So now I'm like,
all right, you're out, you know, longer get a say
in what goes on the record. I just hope you
(04:03):
like it. So no, I don't play a lot of
stuff for play a lot for the kiddos. So like,
you know, if me and and the boys are driving around,
I play some new demos. And it's amazing how you
can get a read on like songs that they gravitate to.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
All So I got to take this step further. Okay,
you had one of the most unusual posts I've seen
in a long time where you're sitting in the backyard,
You're playing new music for your chickens. Now do you
need a little time off or something?
Speaker 3 (04:31):
I mean, I know, right, looks like I need some
friends you play.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
You played the truck song for a chicken that jumps
away and runs over there and takes a dumpy.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Charlie will come over and sit with you.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
I know today that's what like. As I watch that down,
it's like, Wow, that guy really needs a couple of buddies.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Man, he needs help.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
I thought it was funny, I really did. I mean
caught my attention, and I think it's you want to
do with new music? Hey, listen to this?
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah the chicken? What you think? Yeah, it's uh that
was chicken number one and chicken number two. So you
have chickens in the backyard.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, yeah, Well you have to watch your step around
your house.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
So I know it's so wait.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
A minute, did you are you the one that stopped drinking?
Did you stop drinking or was that you or somebody else?
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I wish, I wish I could say I did. I know.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
I was reading where somebody stopped drinking and I thought,
if that was you, you need to start again.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
I know, right, yeah, no, I'm I'm still going to
continue that way.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Did you just have baby number four?
Speaker 3 (05:36):
I did? Okay, So yeah, so the thought of stopping
drinking right now possible? Impossible?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
How does your brain compartmentalize wife family, songwriting, touring, other
aspects of the music business.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
It's it's the it's uh, it's the most difficult thing
I've ever done in life. And you know, I've spoken
that spoke on that a lot about just the balance
between those things and trying to avoid the looking back
and being like, yeah, I didn't handle that right then
and trying to kind of address it head on now. Yeah,
(06:13):
I mean, to be honest with you, I leaned a
lot on buddies in music that helped me with that.
Thomas Read has been a huge influence on you know,
talking with me about nothing related to music and just
checking in with me as a dad and if I'm
striking that balance that we always talk about having. And
(06:35):
I look to him because I feel like Thomas has
done a really, really good job of being a dad
and still having a super successful music career. So you know,
I just kind of sought him out early on and
I was like, Man, I'm gonna get to know this
guy because I think that he can help me, and
(06:57):
he has. He's done that. He's been a great friend.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Brings up another question in my mind, because you've talked
to us before, which you are such the nicest guy,
we would not believe this about you, but you think
that you have a lack of patience. You think you
have you know, a little bit too much of a
temper sometimes, and so in the song Jesus wouldn't do
you sort of confess that again about the patients and
(07:20):
just or whatever. So do you feel like as time
is going by, you're better about the patients and being
the sort of imbalanced guy that you want to be.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
I think I'm getting better at it. I still think
I have my like, you know, my flare ups and
you know, and unfortunately, it's like it's kind of like
the age old thing of like, you know, the people
that love you the most are usually the ones that
get to see that, yeah firsthand. So it's like I
do feel like I've got you know, when you have kiddos,
(07:55):
the selfishness has to go, the patience has to increase.
So that's helped a lot on that front. But you know,
I still rolled over to my band guys, to my team,
like I you know, I still have you know, get
fiery and can get a temper, and you know, it's
just something that like it's not one of the fruits
(08:17):
that I want to have so it's something that I'm
I'm always kind of continuing working on.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Speaking of kiddos, artists often refer to songs that they
either write, record perform all the time. As you know
their kids, you know, real close to them. So how
close are you and in what way are you close to?
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Bar none? You know? Well, I guess it goes back
to our drinking thing. We are bad? Yeah we uh
you know. That was one that I didn't write, that
was sent to me, and I'm on the way home.
I get it. And I don't get pitched a ton
of songs, And usually when I do get pitch songs,
(08:53):
I send them to somebody else to be like, hey man,
listen to these and see if there's one in here
that you might think I need to listen to. This
skipped that process and came straight to me and said
like some and my manager said you got to listen
to the song, bro, And I couldn't stop. I listened
to it twice the first time. First time listening through,
you're like, oh my god, that's a great hook, Like
(09:16):
how did I not think of that? And and then
you get past that, the the envy of not being
a writer, or the jealousy of not being right on
that and uh, and then I'm just listening to it
and I was like, dude, this is such a It's
just a well done song, written well. It sounds great, clever,
super clever, And and then it kind of went into
(09:39):
like what we were talking about, like taking you know,
taking risks, which not that, like barnoun is something I
haven't done in the past. I think it fits kind
of write in with some of those songs, but there
are a few things that we did in the studio
they're a little different. But Yeah, that first day I
heard it, loved it, woke up the next morning, listened
to it one time, and then called Paul, Hey, dude,
(10:00):
I got a song. We got a record, and we
need to do it quick because somebody else is going
to hear this and I want to be the one
singing it.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
So did it hit you the way it hit me?
It took me back to the nineties. I think it
was nineteen ninety one, Travis Trip, Marty Stewart, the whiskey
ain't working. Yeah, it's sort of that absolutely sort of
thing going up.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Really thought about that until right then You've.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Brought it into the future. Yeah, and it is so
funny with guys saying, Okay, I'm going to drink her
off my mind and it never works.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Yeah, it never works. That's a terrible way to go
over getting over things. But like, yeah, that's a it
did It kind of had that a little more traditional feel.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
A little funny.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, yeah, to cheeky. But it has become just an
awesome song to play live. Fans love it and is
definitely one of my favorite off record.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Man, you got a kickback album here. We love it,
We love it, and you're going to have fun playing it.
I know you probably already are.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Thank you so much, thanks for your time.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
You got to go now, Charlie.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Did you summarily dismiss Jordan Davis.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Well, sometimes those guys just lose track of what's going
on in the world, and I have to say, guys, hey,
you got to get back to work. You need to
do so much fun.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
He really is.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Oh and what an album. Learn the Hard Way Jordan
Davis is an album that you have to have. This
is really just new new field, new sound, amazing lyrics
from one of the best in the business right now.
