Speaker 1 (00:00):
So it's gonna be a cool episode to listen to. Mario.
It's Mario Lopez. We're about to be joined by Mexican
actress Kate del Castillo. Not only is her Telemundo back
for season two, but she's currently filming Bad Boys for
Life with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. But that's not
even the most fascinating thing about Kate. Notorious drug lord,

(00:20):
probably the most infamous one ever chap whose man gave
her the right to his life story. And she then
also is the one who introduced Sean Penn to El
Chapel right before he got caught again. So we're gonna
get into all that and more with Kate del Castillo.
So let's do it, Mari Kate del Hey, Mario Lopez,

(00:44):
that's like a great name to say. He just Kate
del Castillo. What's kind of music? I don't think i've
seen you for a while. Last time we were at
the fight, was it? I think that was the last time? Really? Yes? Yeah,
I think so? Right with de laoia friend anymore, you know,
he's not your friend, would have to him anymore because
he doesn't invite me to the fights anymore. And now
I'm m m A so so little little Yeah, I

(01:07):
like that. I signed with Combati really part owner. Now, oh, congratulate.
I even know you know they were on there on
the Zone right, Yes, yes, because I've seen some of
the fights. I didn't realize that m M A is
so popular. Means, oh my god, I had no idea.
I know boxing, obviously, but but how did that come about?

(01:29):
Tell me about that making I just signed last week,
so Variety just put out, you know, the big announcement,
and I'm I'm so excited because you know, I love fights,
and I love sports and this and that, but Combat
is focusing on Hispanics more than anything, and you have
to fight like a Mexican, you know, that's one of
those slogans. So I love that. And also they're empowering
women like you have no idea all the women athletes

(01:52):
actually on the twenty six it's the first time it's
going to be an only women lineup broadcast. So yes,
it's gonna be huge called will Combat, They'll come back.
I saw a few of the fights on on my phone,
is a matter of fact. It's a great thing about
the Zone. A lot of talent, a lot of talent
and I also good, like one of the guys was
from internal the other I was like, Wow, I had

(02:13):
no idea. That's because I grew up wrestling. Actually, yeah,
so I love the m m A both M m m
A and and boxing, so a fan like Also, that's
good to say. Oh so now that I'm gonna steal
you from Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna bring you with
me to the fight because they're really cool. Where do
they happen? Where do you do the different occasions? Be
the one that but it's here in l A, Okay,

(02:35):
So it's going to be kind of cool. It would
be good to have you there because it's it's a
it's gonna be this Lady Charlotte, I'll go check it. Absolutely,
I'm going to send you. We have a lot of
in common, obviously being Mexicans, in both loving the fight game,
whether it's boxing or m m A, both having tequilas.
There you go like, you have good taste. See my

(02:56):
kind of guy. Yeah, exactly, my kind girl. So there's
a lot to talk about, and I want to talk
about back for season two and Telemundo April twenty two.
But I want to talk about the last time I
saw you, which I thought was sort of surreal and
kind of a trip because we're at the fights and
in the audience there was a lot of people with
T shirts that had your face on it and walking,

(03:20):
and I thought that was so surreal, Like how they
made these T shirts? They even that it was like
crazy those times. It was exactly those times, and so
I was like, wow, So when you see that first,
let me start from the beginning. How okay, he's clearly
a fan of yours. How did you eventually meet? Well,

(03:44):
we went down there to meet with him, but he said,
did you get summoned like a king summon someone? Like
how did you know? What I mean? Sort of well,
sort of. Really he was incarcerated when he when he
asked his lord years to contact me. So I was like,
I didn't know who they were. They couldn't tell me

(04:04):
who they were. I was I was working in Miami.
And then I was like, but they were saying that
they wanted to do a big movie, a big Hollywood movie,
and I'm like, okay, yeah, whatever, send me the script,
you know. I was like, and and they were just
like they didn't want they were like kind of shady,
and I was like, I don't I don't know what
this is. It's like, you have to come to Mexican.
I can't go to Mexico. I'm working from Monday two Saturday.

(04:24):
There's no way. So you have to come, and I
know we can't. At the end of coming back and forth,
it's like we are chapels lawyers and I'm like, oh
my god. And so I was interested instantly, and he
was in jail by then. And then so I started
talking to the to the lawyers and this and that,
and then there's a whole story. But and then he escapes.
So this is the first time escape at the second time,

(04:46):
this is the second time that the second time he escaped?
How many? How many times he escaped? Escaped twice? Two
good ones, the second one. With the second one, he
got the German scientists to come and build the tunnel
and and and all that. But he became a fan
of yours essentially and wanted wanted to meet you. Was like,
which I guess is flattering, rightformances, ask anybody who tries

(05:12):
to meet me exactly exactly. So, so you eventually met
him in and how was he when you met him? Oh?
He I mean, what can I tell you, I mean
he I was there with your causing jump in and
the other the other two uh producers down there, and

(05:32):
we were there for probably five hours. And he was
just so nice. And so he doesn't say a bad word.
I mean he doesn't. He drinks, but it barely drinks,
not much. He's such a gentleman. What can I say?
He was amazing with me and with my guests. So
was he a typical like because all my family, both

(05:54):
of my parents are from so and you know all
the deals over there there that's sort of like whenn't
you kind of call it like the Texasm of Mexico, right,
a lot of cowboys and ride and were like, I
don't know what you would say that anything like you
know what I mean? I mean easy or typical kind
of like cowboy guy like that from over there. Well,

(06:15):
he kind of is. But he's very easy, like very
and was sproken like very and he was always with
a huge smile hanging out with you. He was happy. Yeah,
he was happy to see me. I guess yea. And
then were you discussing um the movie or the rights
to a story? Yeah, well that was that was the

(06:36):
main point. He wanted to know a lot about me.
He was. He's also a huge fan of my dad.
My dad is a big act right, so he you know,
he was like, okay, so who are these people? He
didn't know who they were before going there. Of course
I told the other guys that tell them, I'm going
to go with this actor and these two producers. So
so he didn't know who Sean Penn was. No, no, no,

(06:57):
but he they googled them, but they didn't ask anything
to them. They didn't even frisks, nothing or nothing. So
because because he likes me, I guess, and he trusts me,
and that's why he chose me to get the rights
the of his life story. So I was flattered because
of that, and because I wanted to do a movie. Yeah,

(07:18):
I'm a story teller, I'm an actual So that was
my exactly coming out from his mouth. Come on, it's
the biggest one and he's still alive and he wants
to tell me the story. Hell yeah, I'm doing it.
How did the Sean penn uh come into player? How
did that have that come? Because the producer who was
my friend and I knew him for a long time ago,
Fernando Suli is a good friend of him. Uh and

(07:41):
so he introduced me to the other producer, Jose and
they always do movies with Oliver Stone. They all together.
It's like a plant it and and uh so then
he at the very into we're already talking with the
lawyers down in Mexico. The two producers went down to
Mexico to meet with the with the lawyers and said that,

(08:01):
so when he escapes, everything went down and it it
was just a disaster because we thought that he was
not I mean there a movie was gone, right, And
then he contacts me again and when he was on
the run, so then he's like always like, Amiga, I
want to meet you, Amiga, I want to meet you.
And I'm like, wow, yeah, it's a really hard to reading.

(08:22):
I don't know where you are and I don't want
to know. So so that was kind of funny. But
you know, so at the end of the day he
was like, well, and I met Sean because Suli Chin
told me, you know what, Sean is interested to be
in the project. We didn't know if it was going
to be a movie, you know, a series, whatever, it
was a documentary. We didn't know. We just knew that

(08:44):
I had the rights and I and I needed the
real producers and if it was Jean Panne, who's real
action because he was very clear he wanted to do
a big Hollywood movie. So I got the team. Yeah. Perfect,
It was a perfect team. So that's how it. I
meant Sean, but we all yeah, the rest of the

(09:07):
season and we know he had a different agenda. And
when as far as that interview, when he went, did
he like sit down and bust at a tape recorder
or was it a note paper? Was never interviewed him?
He never. That was just we were never down there
to interview him. I I didn't know that he wanted
to interview him. We were there just for him to
meet the you know, the team was gonna make yes, no, no.

(09:32):
Then the interview was when we came back and he
was insisting and let's do an interview with him. He
told him what we were sitting there, and I was like,
what the hell you know you never told me about it.
We we talked about what we were going to talk
with this guy, were surrounded by cicadios. I'm like pissed
that Sean in that moment, but I didn't want him

(09:54):
to see that I was bassed at him because he
might kill him or what woman. So I was like, okay,
and my head is going like thousand months and I'm like, Okay,
maybe Sean is not stupid. Sean probably is saying that.
So if we do an interview or something, we might
because we don't know if this guy is gonna get
you know, killed the next second or not whatever. So

(10:16):
I was like, okay, that might work, and we base
the movie in the article. I know. My head was
spinning and then uh we so Sean the chapel said no, no,
and Sean wanted to stay there with him, and I'm like,
are you kidding me? And and if what does he say?
What does say? And I'm like he's saying he's saying

(10:38):
that he wants to stay here to interview a lot
of are you kid? Tell him sorry? Tell him you
know what? That's my my bad word, not his. So
it's just like, no way, he's not, I'm not. I
don't live here. Are you kidding me? He was like
I'd never land with Michael exactly like I don't live here,

(11:04):
and tell him that he's not staying with me. He's
here because of you. And who's gonna translate, and I
don't want him here without you, and you know, and
I'm leaving right now. You know. It's like anyways, So
then he went all over BlackBerry so he would write
down the questions and then I translated them to chapla
and send them be a. Oh it was, it was,

(11:26):
It was really what what sort of story did chap
I want to tell? He said he was on for
doing the movie? How did he want? You know, what
did you guys get into? Like, that's a great question.
When when they first um contacted me, it was two
thousand fourteen, and when and I went down to Mexico,
uh to ask the lawyers, and I said, okay, first
of all, I'm here because I'm interested, of course, but

(11:47):
first of all you have to ask, uh, Mr Guzman
what kind of who he wants to do? Because you know,
we all know who he is. And uh, it's my
name and it's my career and and you know, I
have a lot of people who I think they respect
me as an actress and as a person. So I
am not gonna tell a fairy tale, you know about

(12:07):
the chapel or a romantic comedy, you know, so and
and and so that. You know. The lawyers were like, exactly,
that's why he picked you because you know they're gonna
tell the truth because you've always been so you know,
straightforward and outspoken. And I was like, okay, so I'm interested.
And but he wants to make things clear and get

(12:28):
things straight because there's a lot of more titos as
they said that they have um tell you know that,
and not all of them are them are you know?
So he wants to set things straight. And I was like, well,
I love it. Did you ever get into any of that,
into into into how the story would go or no?

(12:48):
We we that night we talked about you know, uh, well,
he was laughing a lot. He was actually asking me
questions about my life and about how do I do
this and that. You know, he wasn't really a fan,
but but crush, wow, so so so he's going to

(13:11):
produce the you have to watch my documentary Netflix. Documentary
is really really, really good. Did you follow the trial closely?
His trial? M not as closely as I would like to.
I am, to be honest, not that interested anymore. And
I was working so I couldn't follow it. But I

(13:33):
know what happened. Mean, I know what happened. I just
know that there's a lot of people who said terrible things,
and he said terrible things, not terrible things. I think
it's truth everything that's that was said there, you know,
and all the people that And that's why I wanted
to do the movie because I wanted to know how
mooa without money, poor, that has nothing else, how he

(13:57):
becomes number one in the world. He doesn't do it alone.
So who are the other people who helped him get there?
So you know, have you um stayed in touch at all?
Is that possible? No, of course not, but well the
lawyers have not lately, but they did because it was

(14:23):
really crazy because I didn't know what was going on,
and I knew that seam Pen had something to do
and I was very afraid that he would know that
I had something to do with his capture. And uh
so I was very glad when I talked to the lawyer,
the New York lawyer, I wasn't in my lawyer's office,
and he said, first of all, Miss Kate, I just

(14:44):
wanted to let you know Mr Guzman and his family
has nothing against you, nothing against your family whatsoever. Oh
my god. I was like, like I knew. I knew
because I know these people know everything, and but but
you know, it was just a piece of when I
heard that from his mouth. You know. So he's the

(15:04):
one who represents him. He was the only one m
then that could have access to him. Yeah, what do
you think is the biggest misconception you've ever heard about?
You were in the chapel um, Well, it was it was.
It was so bad, Mario. It was terrible. It was
it was not It was like it was like a
bad Nobel. I mean, my life wasn't risk, my family

(15:26):
wasn't risk. They I had criminal charges. They said that
I with my tea, my tequila, that I was laundering
money for him, that I was that why I didn't,
I don't know how to say that even in Spanish,
where you hide someone, um that was another charge, criminal
charge when you hide a fugitive. Harboring a fugitive, exactly,

(15:48):
harboring a fugitive that was another charge. And the other
one I don't even remember. But you know, so they
even said that I that I had a relationship with him,
like a romantic relationship with him, you know, they that
I was imagine my parents and I couldn't say anything.
I couldn't defend myself. There was moments that I couldn't
depend on myself until later. But the Mexican government filtered everything, everything,

(16:11):
everything which is illegal. Witness an ongoing investigation, So they
filtered all the information, and they they took it out
of context and manipulated all the text to make it
look And that's what happens with women. You know, if
I was a man, this would have never happened. I
was a woman. Why did they do? They go on
your most vulnerable that's sexual? What else? We didn't find

(16:32):
her laundering the money? We didn't find like guilty in
any ways, I don't drugs, you know, and suddenly what
do we do? Well, maybe she's sleeping with him. It's
just so stupid and so cheap international and but I
destroyed my life. I mean like literally it was a story.
I couldn't work, I couldn't do anything. My parents were

(16:52):
like in danger, the whole family was in danger. So
it was not funny. It was really horrible time that
I went through. And I'm taking right now. I'm trying
to put my pieces together. I'm back together, I'm back working,
thank god. I want to I want to get to
that in the second last question in nash Guard. Have
you been back to Mexico last Christmas? I finally did
because literally I could because my my case was was done,

(17:16):
was over. But my lawyers advised me not to go
back to Mexico until the president finnishes or got out
of office. And that's what exactly what I did. I
got it. How was it when you went back? Very emotional,
very very emotional. There was a lot of I had
to give a press conference because I didn't want the
Mexican press to think that I was hiding or something.

(17:37):
And I and I was very proud to be back
in Mexico cleaned, you know, and I'm trying to clean
up my name and everything. And there was a lot
of press, a lot. It was two hundreds of outlets,
media outlets there. So I was very afraid. I was
so nervous. I was, and also nervous that I didn't
know what was going to happen the minute I crossed

(17:57):
immigration and actually there was a big hour alert, so
they had me there standing like twenty five minutes and
it was scary as hell. Well, you you've played um
such tough, strong willed, confident women uh, in your in
your roles and obviously accomplished actress. And you your father,

(18:19):
um wasn't was an actor. I know he wasn't. He
was annoilas himself for many many years. Was it something
that you always wanted to get into your parents sort
of encouraged you to kind of get into this business
or how did it come about? Because you were very young?
That was nine when I did my first movie. And
actually my dad has more than three and fifty movies. Wow,
that's right, that's right. Movie. I mean he's done a

(18:40):
lot of telenoelas too, because you know, in Mexico there
was a time where the movies were really good, like
the Golden Age and that, and then they went awful,
like really just like both us that it was like,
I'm not kidding, it was horrible. He was really really bad.
So and then the other option was to do telenovelas
that where by the way, I will watch one and

(19:04):
too so so and then are huge everywhere. That so
it was the only option that we had. And I think, no,
my dad never wanted me to be an actress. She said,
he said that I was going to suffer a lot. Uh,
my heart and my my you know, my physicality and

(19:27):
everything was going to be challenged, and because I was
a woman, and he didn't want me to to suffer.
So as a little girl, you just said, Dad, I
want to I want to do this, I want to
do this. And I started doing one or two things,
but I was very secure. I didn't want to say
that I really wanted to be an actress. And I
will always remember when I first went to with my
father to a play. He was doing Salome. So it's

(19:48):
you know, all this costumes, beautiful costumes and this and
how do you say those theaters are in Mexico like
the way of a shoe of a horse and like
the right yeah, yeah, it was like an ampithat shape
with balconies, right. And so I remember I was behind
the curtain night was like being nosy, and I opened

(20:10):
a little bit the curtain and I saw that all
the people getting there, and I was like, I felt
something I would like I wouldn't be here. This is,
you know, on this side of the curtain. And so
he finally convinced him, and then he lets I finally convinced,
and I started working and I was I would do
things that he didn't know like taking my you know my,
It wasn't that he didn't want me to or forbidden

(20:31):
me to do it, of course, you know, yes, of
course that's coming from a place I love right there. Um.
And it's so hard to being a um, a child
actor and then transitioning into an adult and yet you
know you managed to do that. Um, such a big hit.
Uh and in such a great character. And now back

(20:53):
for season two and Telemundo, what can we expect in
the show and how is your character different this time?
Oh my god, it's been a years and it's literally
eight years when we start again. So it's really good
because I don't have to look like I was, So
that's really good. Um. But now now she has we
left her being pregnant in a place that we don't know,

(21:17):
with a new identity because of d d A. So
that's what the d A gave her, you know, an
exchange of her testifying against the one who was the
candidate for presidency. So that's the end. And now it's
eight years later. She has a nine year old eight
year old daughter, and now she she knows something in

(21:39):
the past is gonna come and slap her on the face.
And the moment that he's not gonna know. And what's
her most vulnerable thing, well, her daughter. So of course
the first episode you're gonna know she gets kidnapped. Was

(21:59):
it based on a on a real life person? No,
you know what, A lot of people think that that
is some Mendoza lives or lived, but no, you know,
it's based on this amazing novel that was a vestseller
for decades. And um, and I asked him because he's
a friend of mine, and I asked him, and those
is just such an amazing characters, so many how how

(22:21):
could you know about this, your Spaniard, you you know?
And and well he's like, I got a lot of girlfriends,
Mexican girlfriends. And I'm like, okay, I get it, but
but you know, so it was like, no, it's based
on a lot of real situations and actually real some
of them are real characters but made into a novel.

(22:42):
And Mendoza is made up right right because there are
strong female women who did run empires like that, they
did exist. Mexican women have been very progressive, especially in
the drug trade before for many years, which is pretty fascinating,
you know what I mean. You know, it's a weird
sort of movement as be going down there, and you're

(23:03):
also filming Bad Boys for Life with Will Smith and
Morton Lawrence. That's awesome. What can you tell us about that?
That's awesome. I can't tell much to be honest, um,
but I was how was it working with those guys? Amazing? Amazing?
First of all, you have a lot of fun, like
it's it's just so happy to be on set with
those guys, and they're so generous as actors, and then

(23:27):
they cannot be that perfect. I mean, what was me
is beyond an amazing, beautiful person. Like really, I've known
and I've worked with amazing actors, with big actors. This
guy is for real and I will always appreciate that.
And he loves tequila. And he was in my house drinking,
taking in one of the tego stations I did, so
that's how we met, Actually in the tegle station I

(23:48):
did at my place, so he was there. He was
rapping with the with the mariachi. Awesome. I don't know
where those videos when I need them. He was like,
but he's always been great and supportive and he wanted
my tequila to to you know, to get there and
he was and I don't even know why, but but
he was very nice with me. And now you know,

(24:09):
but I he didn't cast me. Let me tell you.
I did the whole thing. You did the whole process. Okay, good,
Well that makes it even more special, much more. Of course,
where you get shooting or did? Where did you? Atlanta? Atlanta? Atlanta? Okay?
And it's supposed to take place where Miami. I'm and
there's no. I don't know how you're making that. I

(24:30):
was just like, you're missing, You're missing like an ocean. Exactly, yeah, exactly,
but they are shooting actually right now in Miami. Okay.
That's funny. That's and then you're very diverse too. We
I mean we talked about the tequila and then obviously
uh doing the novella and the movie, but you also

(24:51):
got a podcast, I do we are? Tell me about that? Mario. Well,
it started like probably a year and a half ago
with my best friend Jessica, who was a journalist, and
we are always talking smack, and then we said, let's
let's do something and probably people will because sometimes we will,
you know, post it or whatever, and we get a
lot of and I was like, we should do something

(25:11):
and we should, you know, like a podcast, And actually
I didn't exactly know what a podcast was. Knowing something
that millennial talk a lot. That's like me, I'll say, yeah,
I'll do it. What are we doing? I figure I
want to get there, so so so we did and

(25:33):
for almost a year and then we changed. Now we
are in a tradition and I'm so happy because now
we're going national. Very good. That's awesome. Congress, What are
you talking about everything and not like like like like nothing.

(25:53):
Give me an example of sometimes you're talking about here,
we're talking about I find out about the person. I
like to find out the persons and stories, things they
want to talk about. Always have a guest, always have
on the radio show, a talk about show show, you know,
on the radio show, you know, topical, topical things, current events. Okay,
so it's more along those lines, just a long life. Yeah,
depending on what things you talked about it Like the

(26:16):
last the last one I did, it was about rain
now about the comeback and how it was just so
big among Hispanics in American and how it changed it
really changed the way you well, not the way it
changed Spanish speaking television in the United States. Because it
broke every single ratings with among Americans. Do yeah, I

(26:36):
remember that. I remember when it came out, and okay,
as far as I talked about my comeback to Mexico,
took things aside from personal stories right there? What what
subjects you talk you talking about relationship? Relationships? You talk
about relationship? About what you talk about relationship or sex? Like?
Asked me questions? Go ahead, I'm a guest, right, God
asked me a question. Do you believe in marriage? Do

(26:59):
I believe in nerd? Why? I better say considering a marriage,
that's the thing you better say, But you do really
believe in marriage? I do, And I'm gonna tell you
let's go. Because as I've gotten older, I've tried to
build a little bit more spiritual almost right, and be
a better Catholic. And I think once you start having kids,
it becomes a whole different situation. And I and I

(27:21):
want to raise my kids. Was with sort of a faith,
faith based background, so for me personally, it was it
was important. Now That's why I wanted to get married
later on late in life, because I had a hell
of a run prior to that. I have no regrets,
you know, but um, Prior to that, I did go
back and forth and like, I don't know if I

(27:41):
want to be married when I be married for then
people and divorces and that. I think it's where you're
at in life and as an individual, and I think
I just I needed to get a little bit more
settled um and and and calm down a little bit
in all aspects of my life. So I'm like, it's
it's just that point. I happened to be at a
point in my life where I kind of wanted like
a partner and just to kind of chill. So you

(28:01):
know what I mean. So I'm wife at that time, Yeah,
you know at that time, you know. So it's different.
And how how religious are you? Well, I mean I
think that's how how is it? Is it really important
in your life? Religion? It is important in my life
just because I like having the structure, um, the infrastructure
to both raise my kids and it gives me a

(28:22):
little bit of peace and confidence in whatever I'm handling.
I like being kith based. No, I was, I've always been,
but as I've gotten older, it's gotten a little bit
more stronger, and I think it just went next level
when I had more kids. Can I ask one question,
Who's tequila is better? Oh? We should have had we
should have had a shot off right now, right, it's

(28:43):
not worse. I've had kids to Gila. It is good.
You had that. Yeah, yeah, it is good. I'm gonna,
I'm gonna. I'm gonna have to hook you up. You know,
you run, You're gonna have money. I'm gonna have yours.
Sounds good. We can all be in the family. We can. Absolutely.
There's there's always room for tequila. Yes, there's always room
for the keys, and always room for fellow Mexicans to

(29:07):
continue to thrive and say and congratulations. I can't wait
for the new season. And please let me know next
time we Lostigrez of course. And I want you to
come to the fights, to the MM. Yeah, and you're
gonna talk about the fights. Okay, good, you see you're ready.
I'm sorious. We have so much in common. I love it.
I will I will let you know. Always great seeing you.
Thanks for coming back to see you. So don't forget
