Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, here we go Mario Lopez, and got another

(00:02):
great guest joining me for this episode of Listen to Mario,
actor Emilio Rivera from Sons of Anarchy and also on
the new hit show Mayan's which just got picked up again.
He's also been all kinds of stuff like Spider Man,
three Venom, a whole bunch of movies, and his story
is pretty interesting. It was an addict, worked as a mechanic,

(00:24):
got clean and somehow found his way into acting and
now he's on a hit show. So excited to chat
with Emilio. So let's get into it. Mario, Emilio Rivera,
Welcome to the show man, Thanks for having me, good night,
thanks for taking the time to come by. So congratulations
first of all, bro on on both the shows. But

(00:45):
before we get into the shows itself, I can't believe that,
because I've known you for a while now, that I
did not know you had a career in stand up comedy,
that you were a comedian, because like, with all due respect,
I don't look at you and say, oh, that dude
is like a really funny dude, knocking me down. Knocking
me down. I just got because you know how he's
like guests about love. He knows I love him. But

(01:09):
you know what I'm saying, because they're usually like one
would think, like a goofy guy here, because you're not
a good you're too cool to take comic. That's what
I'm telling down a long way to go the comics,
that you're too cool. You're too you remind me like
one of my cool deals, you know what I mean?
How did that come about? First brother? Because you know,
you know, before I became a comic, before I started acting,
I was a rule every guy in the streets. You
did gang member, drug addic, all that ship. Oh I'm sorry,

(01:32):
that's fine, that's right, Yeah, yeah, I tell me from there. Yeah,
because you're you're you're from right, recalled frock on my
Dodger Stadum. I did it forty years when, tell me
about it if you know. And then all what happened
was because I was so hard and unapproachable my mentors
this time. So you know what, you gotta break out
of that man he goes nobodydy scared of approach you.
So he made me do skip comedy. Or you have

(01:53):
to be act like a fool. I want you to
be on stage to be, to be to do the
stuff that was uncomfortable for me, because that was not
a I couldn't I was not I couldn't talk to people,
you know a lot. You had to have a vocabulary.
Who got the bag, who did well? Who did that? Right?
That's all we say. Yeah, so he had me be
able to express myself from the people. And it was tough, bro.
But you know, because well, yeah, that stuff you say,

(02:14):
it it takes a certain I've always said it's a
lot like a fighter getting in the ring. You got
your vulnerable, you're alone to take a certain amount of courage.
But how did you go from that for being this
essay right here and frog town to getting into performing? Well?
What it was that all I did my comedy, Bro,
I wrote my own comedy. It was just stuff that
happened in my life. But the funny part of it,
you know, and of course it's exaggerated to make it

(02:34):
more funny. You did what I'm saying, and nobody had
a story like me. So I ran with the brother
and they worked man, you know, and then when I
was doing stage, I'll be doing like do you look
at me? Look at me? Look at me? Like like like
stupid ship. Bro liked because because I had a break
away from the mask local. It was so hard for
me to take away. The mask was grown to my
face local. Yeah, so you did the comedy before the

(02:55):
acting or what? I did a lot of theater if
I did twenty stage productions before I did my first
TV show. Look at that Catholics, right, there's the holiday,
there's the comedy right there. Now I'm seeing it. So
how did you how did the the the acting break start?
You know what, brother, It's so weird is that. You
know back in the day, Uh, most of the actors

(03:17):
that paid guys like me, they really sucked at it.
You know I'm talking about it was it was it
was gotcha, bro. You know, I fell embarrassment. I would
see that, you know. And I always loved the movies.
I always loved the movie. So you know, first they
tried to make me a good looking guy. I was
younger years ago, right and this, you know, and that
ain't okay. But they wanted me to be the next
Jimmy Smiths and this and that, and then you know,

(03:37):
we tried and I worked, and I did work, but
it wasn't me. And I was uncomfortable. You know what,
forget about being Jimmy Smith's the next eight Martinez. Let
me being me, Ludy be. There's nobody out there like
me and around with that. And you know I never
stopped working. It was been blessed or exactly. And I'm
telling you people who are listening to this, you know,
find your niche. You know, people gonna talk ship, people

(03:59):
who have talking ship about me all my life. You
know something, you know, like all he pages this, you
know what, but I played the hell out of it.
You did what I'm saying, and then what happens, But
they give you like the stereotype, it's okay, check us out.
But you know what, I did it so good that
they say this guy can actually act and they start
giving you different roles, right, so do which is good,
that's the best for you, and run with that ship.

(04:21):
Eventually they're gonna give you something else, you know, exactly exactly. Well,
let's talk about that on that note. This new movie
that just opened, El Chico, what's it about? It's you
know what, nothing that you think it's about. It's really
surprises you, man, because you know I saw I read
the script and I was like kind of like, Okay,
that's a trip, right, And then I saw the movie
and I dug it and I saw it again. I

(04:41):
didn't take it too much. You know, they put it
up all the time. But the last time around, bro,
it's on fire card now, I said, you know, we
have all the o g sal lope is um Michael,
you go, they go back from Zusu days talking about you.
But as far as like the premise itself, what's the story? Man,
it's about to too much to talk about because I
get confused talking about it. But it's got no no, no,

(05:07):
it's deep can really because dig it man? It would
you describe it more of like a drama superhero kind
of because it kind of has a little it's a drama,
but vigilante. You know, I'm like that, you know, Okay,
I would I would say superhero because he could watching Gostels,
but I'm talking about the vigilante. You know he can't speak. Yeah, yeah,

(05:28):
yourself with that too, yeah, because I would say, what
was he what was he saying? Halo? If we don't
know what it is? So okay, So it's got there, okay,
and then it's got a very cool look for uh,
and I've seen the trailers, so that's great. Or kills
it man? You know you we know George opens has

(05:49):
the comedian and stuff. You know this one he's pays
a captain. You know he's so good man. And who's Lgicano?
Who's actually that castile old castle? A great job man, Okay,
you know there was a people that should I should
have been a chick. You know what Oko did? Man?
He really did man? And the Jatio is here was
another great actor I work with in the past. Uh,
you've got a great cash brother. Nice man. We look forward.

(06:10):
Let's talk. And my wife plays roller. Really that's my
real wife and not on the movie Home the Rock.
She No, she's a rock girl. I don't want Lola
to be my real wife because she beats a shot
of that kid in the movie Got It, Got It? No.
But I love you because I follow you on social

(06:31):
media and I want to say something first before I
want I want you guys to hear this real quick.
I guess sees about Mario. So, you know, a couple
of years ago, we had the twin to Push Up
challenge for the you know best of Commiss Suicide, you know,
twenty to a day, you know, and it's good when
we can call celebrity and and you know Tom to
do it, He'll do it for you because you know
you get a large platform. Well, I called a lot
of people, man before you know how to respect because

(06:53):
the celebrities they're busy. I called him day ahead of time, say,
but I'm gonna call you out, you know in public?
Is it cool? You know? And everybody called, we're cool.
There's a couple of guys I called that. They were like, hey, bro,
you know I'm busy right now. You know, but I
had just called Mario Lopez two days earlier. And I'll
tell you right now, ain't nobody more busy than Mario Lopez.

(07:14):
I'm busy, bro. I know you're busy. I know you're busy,
but Mario Lopez is everywhere. You you't know what he
did on me because I got you. And the next
day he put up the baddest video broke him and
who was the spotter? I never forget those things are
not thank you. I appreciate it. Yeah, stand up guy, man.
Some I'm always of the word. I appreciate it, man,

(07:35):
Well look good, thank you. That's funny that I can't
believe you remember that. That's cool? Um my ntmc man,
congratulations renewed for season two, where we gonna find Marcus
Alvarez in the new season. You know, man, you know
you guys, you guys know you've been watching the show.
I hung up my cut. You know I don't belong
to I mean, I'm not wearing the cut no morenama.
I'm warning the Armani suit. I traded a Hardy for

(07:56):
a bed Ley, So you know it's gonna be a
different story now. So so me, Danny Pino, we're gonna
be mupping. I mean, we're gonna be we teamed up now.
And he's like he's ahead of the cartel and I'm
gonna be his uh gonna head. Oh you know, so
it's yeah, it's a trip, man, such a such a
a cool production team behind it too, and obviously a
spinoff from Sons of Anarchy, great great actors right there.
Did you know how to ride a bike? Before? You

(08:18):
haven't read? I was four team brothers. I was for that,
you know. I started with the mini backs in the
dirt back, but I got my first I got my
first back when I was for I paid it with
my own money right down. I used to change starters
when I was a kid, you know, and uh and
uh my day checked this out home. Okay is it cool?
So check it out? So you know, my dude and
my dad didn't have the best credit. You know, you
didn't have no credit. But you know, he's goes, but

(08:39):
I know my dad, you know, but check it out also.
So so he goes, going, dad owned by his motorcycle. Okay,
you cool sign? He goes, yeah, unless so cool, it's right,
And I get the bike and so I get the
bike digging he goes, drive up. He goes, you actually
got it. That's funny, It's really funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

(09:04):
I didn't know his credit was not good. Yeah, first day,
the first days they say you have to drive hut
him freaking open it up. But you know we're young
with fool fools. Bro you know, the first day I
get my bike, hoes me my homeboard, total rest and feast.
You know, um, we're racing down the guy and I broke.
He didn't total. Everybody that I know, everybody that I

(09:24):
know is had a bike has a wiped out at
least one. That's why I honestly do I get scared.
I get scared. I'm like, you know what I'm not,
can't I feel like I'm my cousin. I thought he
died one time he broke his leg. My cousin Ralphie
was remorse and I was just like skuy. So I
never want to get on a buke. You feel scared,
don't get it at OK, if you have that inclination.
It's not me that I'm worried about so much. It's
it's the people. I can't see me right turned to

(09:45):
the corner because everybody's medicated in texting bro Yeah, rightly medicated. Yeah,
I haven't gotten high in twenty nine. Is gonna twenty
years this month? But you know, and I never got
to trouble smoking weed, but check it out on when
I was smoking weed, I always had a good time.
I was kicked back. It did slow down my emotions broke.

(10:07):
He showed me down, So I'm sure he stows him
down too, because I heard that weed is better nowaday,
you know, yeah, by a self driving Tesla and then
you're the driver. That's a good car. Hey, But how
was it right there? Working on Sons of Anarchy? And
then Kurt Sutter and all those guys and Charlie hunt them,

(10:27):
all those guys, I mean their brothers. To this day,
we're still brothers. Man revered show, critically acclaimed. Yeah, I
mean number one for me for all time. And Kurt
Sutter you know you don't he's my boss. You know,
he's been a better he's been a better friend than boss.
He takes care of me. That's cool, man. Yeah, the

(10:47):
fact guy, he's obviously, but he believes that you haven't
you in the next stuff? And you're also part of
this Netflix series on my block. It's not the typical
tough guy roll. Is it more of that? We just
got picked up for third seasons. I'm really happything. Congratulations everybody,
but check to check this out. Dog. So this month,
I see what happens. When I got that gig. You know,
they had called me they may do want see me

(11:08):
do for this. My brother had just passed away and
he was living with me the last two weeks of
his wife and my pad ram. So I was going
to some changes, Dog. And So I had just finished
the show I was on and I told my agent
and I don't want to work for you know, for
a couple of months, I just want to chill, you know,
go through this on my card now, you know. And
then uh, you know he went through that, you know,
you know, yeah, and uh he passed away and then
I saw but I was still down for a few

(11:30):
more weeks. So and the uh after, you know, about
three weeks went by, after the funeral and all that ship,
I started feeling normal gain, you know. So I told
my my agent, we called him back, see this, still
want to see me, man? And they called back. They go,
they we've been waiting for you man, you know, talking
about So that was feeding right, So that was beautiful
right on. So I went in to go sit with
them and there's made more like a general meeting. And
I had the side I had to started to write

(11:50):
to read regarded. Let me sure you what I got.
So I come from commuy. I know the timing. I
know what it is you did. And I said, when
I did my thing, and they're going, you know, we
love that. But hen just like like a robot like
Montone here you talk like that, I'm going, you know,
as an actor, you want to express yourself. You want
to find the highs and lows. Right, So that's my
throw right here. That I'm playing. His name is Cheebou.
They said, well, he owns a flower shop and he

(12:11):
probably smelled too much manure, you know what I'm saying.
So mus sometimes i'm doing the character, I'm going, now,
this motherfucker just smoked a lot of PCP too much.
I'm gonna go with. That's fun, you know, but it's
it's really hard money because, you know, because I'm doing
this show, and sometimes I'll even cut myself because I'm
so like dead pandic oh yeah yeah, and I'll cut

(12:35):
my own self and say, was that okay? You don't
because I can't be But you know what, I've been
watching and my son's my son's finally I showed that
my son can watch with me, you know, because the
Coming to eight show and he last his ass off.
That's great creative muscles. And you've been pretty uh pretty
lucky in the sense that most of the stuff you've
done is here in l A right, is here in
l A right, said I want to see right little,

(12:56):
but my house is my house. Bow that's great, and
my that's lucky right there. Most of the time you
know that you got these guys cruise are out to
Vancouver or whatever right, and and is this true? You
appeared to music video from Nicki Minaj and fifty cent. Yeah, bro,
yeah yeah they called they called from me as good
I'll take it right. Yeah? Were you hip hop fan
or you just you know, you know what, I gotta

(13:16):
be cool here, man, I mean, you know I'm old.
You know my music is old slow jab my mom
R and B. So I know I'm a slow jam
but you know what it's. You know when they called
me for a fifty cent because they called for me,
you know, so and be honest, you my mom my kids.
You know they were heavy to that. Going's hear some

(13:38):
music man, they have for me? This job I go,
but I'm not gonna take I got who he is,
you know. And then uh, and I go ahead, that's
a good song, you know. So he flew me out
to had a bad had a badass time. You know,
we're out They did for a few months. Yeah, and
then from there, but it was crazy because I went
on going all like um shorted out of your stuff.
But then the next day I had to go to
Vancouver and it was snow over. Yeah, weird coach, but

(14:00):
being brains, you know, and and and then Nicki Nicki Minaj.
They called me again and said they want you to
pay her husband on her video. Yes, so then when
they are going to send me the song, you know
I always wanted I want to always want to read
the scrip or hear the song if I gon't do anything,
you know. And so it's a little Wayne bird Man.

(14:22):
You're like, okay, that's cool, well go send me. Sam
Sending said, send me the video. Sending the song. It
was about those cool you. It were cool. They were
what I got there. I got stories on me. But
but but what it is is that the good stories.
But yeah, yeah, but you know, like, um, so the
video came in. It was called a high school and

(14:43):
um it was like, it's a cool song man. You know,
you know what is she's my old lady and I'm
a rich man, and and then little Wing was her
high school crush. And then when when I'm away, you know,
seas with my old lady, they take all my stuff.
It's a cool video, man, Yeah, story, it's pretty cool man,
Manny boom Man, thank you. But Briny Boma has put
me in his movies and his all his videos that
he does. Nice man, all right, Amelia right now. I'm

(15:05):
gonna put you on the spot. Quick questions, quick answers. Okay,
go to karaoke song. My eyes adored you? Oh keeping it,
Frankie Valley R dude, I told you like all these
and Brandy. I like Brandy and Brandy. Okay the songs. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
she's exactly last show you binge watched, last yew I

(15:30):
binge watched. I just saw it right now. Good. Yeah,
the last one that when they were in Mexico. Yeah,
so good. Michael Pani cured on that celebrity crush growing up.
You know what, man, Barbara eating brokay a genius. I'm
just scary to check it out. You know, you know

(15:52):
you check it out. So I do a lot of
comic cons, right, you know comics. You know what do
you do that for the sent of Anarchy? Yeah? Yeah,
that's change. That's a good little site business, great business, bro. Yeah,
and what it is like four years ago? I got
to meet her in person, Bro, She's still as beautiful
as ever. Man. That's a com right, all time favorites

(16:14):
set to work on my n SMC. You know what
or not, it's just like we're all bigger our second
season and we became brothers. But you know, where's the way.
I mean, it was weird because I say, it's the
way for seven years, you know, and you become family.
You know what I'm saying. So I'm telling you man,
you know, I'm happiest when I'm working and when my familia.
So when I go to work, it's like me on familia.

(16:35):
So I never lose some boy, it's win win exactly.
Nickname growing up Big Lefty, Big Lefty, or you left
right right there last time you got in a fight.

(16:55):
You know, a blow. Uh it's been a while blow.
You know. This guy's into truck, right, and I was like,
I was like forty years on four now forty six,
right and check it out on. So they busted into
my truck and somebody came in out of paint downards
with my friends. Right, come bother because April, somebody just
came out your truck. Right, it's my body home, sure
enough of home out there doors are open. And I

(17:18):
looked down there there with a strolling an. So I
get him my car and I rushed and my home.
My companions, you know compared. It is cool. He's not
a boiling guy, you know, he's just a nice guy,
you know. You know, I'm the crazy one. We're not
no more. But you know still, you know, so check
it out on homes, you know. So so I pulled
up and I said, go aha home. What it was
is just you know, didn't take nothing. But see that
day I had something like bonds, like not a lot

(17:38):
of many tack to my safe deposit back in my bank.
I didn't make it on time for the bank, right,
So and you know, bonds, you know, I don't know
what they are. You don't know what they are, right,
and the money, you know, the certificates. So when they
were rummaging to my ship, bro oh, I didn't know
what the time it was gone. So I go with
and I'm thinking about my bodys between Gee's right, So
I go, I go ahead, homes And then they were
all like what they're going to bring into my car? No,

(18:00):
and going home bigger to my car. Now he goes, well,
what he says, you know, he says, you know, he here,
a's kind of crazy, right. So I'm looking at you
because I follow in my life, and that's my thing
is back in the day, all we did was fact
before the guns came out, you know. So so I'm
looking at him. I dropped him because because I got
worried about this guy a right, so I dropped him.
He rolls down a little bit and all that. I
always wear boots on. Boy this night, I'm wearing tennis

(18:23):
shoes off all the time. So chicken out. So then
when I do this, then I come at, you dropped
this dude. And now this guy's trying to get up.
So I go and others, you know, and then I
just kick and then this that kicks you. And then
this other guy comes up and they're not just knock
him out. He's done. And then this guy, now you know,
he's just trying to cover up. So because you know
how they were big big bag pants, right, so not

(18:44):
because they don't want to cop us, right, I give
him by this links, but I don't try to like
SI come up out anything come out. Nothing came out.
I'm the wrong bottle still from you know. I don't
like no, no, no, the biggest pet piece of anything.
I was a lot of bead things, but one thing

(19:05):
I was never was a thief. I hate you know,
to us in my fam media that was at the
bottom of the barrel. Yeah you know what I say.
You don't steal man, you did, and but checked this
out home, So okay, So that all got beat him
up pretty bad. And then what happened was I went
back to the truck and what happens when they rubberd
chek to my stuff, the bonds. They didn't steal it.
It went underneath the sea. But don't tell the truth.

(19:28):
But then give you still busted into my car. That's
that was the word. Yeah, exactly, yeah, exactly, man, I
appreciate you sharing that. That was good man. Hey, congratulations
on everything, dude, Proud of you, man, and exactly. Meanwhile,
