Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is on with Mario Lopez.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Tabion.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Mario Lopez, is there any mean right now? Actor Bart Johnson?
How you doing Bart?

Speaker 2 (00:07):
I'm good. Good to see you, Mario. Thanks for having
me on.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Man, oh, thanks for taking the time. Brother.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
One of your iconic acting roles, of course, was his
coach Bolton in the High School Musical franchise. And now
you've launched a podcast about the movies called get your
Head in the Game.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
What are you going to be getting into there?

Speaker 4 (00:23):
Well, if you could believe it. January is the twenty
year anniversary. So this a little bit of a celebration,
a little bit of you know what I've realized, Mario
was like, I'm the biggest fan of High School Musical fans,
Like they're the greatest and have been so good to
me for the last two decades. So we had to
do something special for the twenty years. So you have
been think for the last two years, like what can
I do to get back? What do my wildcats want?

(00:46):
And I thought, Man, some more insights, some stuff maybe
they've never heard before, some stories. You know, the cat's
been interviewed a million times, but they've never been interviewed
by someone that was on set with him a fellow
cast member. So or hopt a good bunch of like
just new, insightful stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Good for you, man.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yeah, they'll left their guard down, I'm sure, and probably
be a little vulnerable and have some fun. I know
you're gonna have some other stars of film on the podcast.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Uh have you? Have you spoke by a chance like
Zach or Vanessa?

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
I'm not supposed to give away all the secrets yet,
but I will say I think I think all of
the cast will be on the show.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Oh nice.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
So everybody's been really receptive. You know, it's like we're
doing it. You know, it's not on camera, it's not
like a you know, it's not for show. Really, it's
just it's hopefully a little more intimate and a little
more personal, and a lot of a lot of stories
that like I know that I've never heard them, you know,
tell he tell these stories.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
So we've got to get into I think a lot
of a lot of personal stuff.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Okay, good, that's cool.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Personal experiences and you know, yeah, yeah, for.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
The twentieth anniversary, are you planning something as far as
aside from the podcast, I should say, because obviously it's
a big number.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
It's a big number. I can't believe. The thing is,
it seems to be a lot.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Bigger now than it was twenty years ago, which just
blows my mind. I was in the airport yesterday. I
was stopped like ten times, and people are so excited,
and even kids that are.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Like five years old, they could recognize me.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
So it's I think the generation is kind of you know,
the parents are like, I'm going to teach my kid.
My kids are going to be raised on this like
I was. So it's really sweet. And the fan base
is growing, so you know, I've been thinking what.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Else I could do.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
Of course, there's a lot of tiktoks, a lot of
things trending on social media, and I'm all over it.
I'm all about it, like I'm just no shame whatsoever. Yeah,
been loving that. So more of that, and then maybe
a couple of little secret things that are little projects,
a couple of scripts flowing around.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Okay, good for you, Good for you. And I know
you were also in the season one of land Man.
Love that show.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
That is love it. That is great.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
How may we see you back on a season two?
And how was the experience overall.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
I was great.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
You know, I've been I auditioned for Yellowstone for like
six years, and then you got on land Man and
it was for there was like a certain number of episodes,
and I'm supposed to be coming back to this next season,
which I'm.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Like, please, you know you know how it is, Mario.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
It's like whatever the serial, like whoever is being focused on,
Like the lawsuit needs to happen. I'm this like cowboy
lawyer on the show. But I got to work with
Billy Bob Thornton. I got to work with my wife,
Robin Lively, like she was this this is the waitress
at the patch, so we like we crossed path.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Like during my scene, I'm like checking around.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Ah, that's great.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Throw that in there, man, just look at that. Good. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
So Billy Bob though, Man, Billy Bob's amazing. He has
like just such just tons of dialogue. And you can
just watch that guy, like you could just I could
just sit there and watch him all day long, just
if he was saying nothing. I could watch He's just
so interesting. The writing's so great. I've known Taylor Sheridan
for thirty years or so, and this is the first
time I got to be on one of his shows

(03:50):
so I could die. I could live the rest of
my actor life on a Taylor Sheridan show.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
It's the best. It really is. Man.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
No, that was great.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
And I remember I ran into I Believe you and
your wife for the Cobra Kaid premiere.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
I think, yeah, yes, yes, recently, yeah, yeah, she was.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
She was the lead in Karate Kid two yes, three
three three three yes, but the Bonzie Tree one yes,
and so it was really fun for her to go
back and h and get involved in that storyline on
Cobra Kay.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
That was cool.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
By the way, Martin, I had I just realized that
you and I were up for a job together.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
You know, you and I audition. I just I just
memory of being in.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
The producer's room with you on this movie. You ready
for this one? It was called Scavenger Hunt and it
went away.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
The movie was like, was never made?

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Because I need to look that up.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
If it was, I don't think. I don't think it
was ever made. It was it was like early. It
was a while ago, man, but I remember remember it.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
No idea, that's crazy. You have a good well.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
The reason I remember was because you were the cast
you already and then I was like the next guy
on the show.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
And I remember I went in the producer's.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
Room and you you were doing your scene and you
were like going through the producer's death on his like
going through his bookshel and I'm like, Oh, this guy's
like he's.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Like bringing it to life in this room.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
I love it, Like actors are like, I'm sure I
knew the dude. I don't think I was like randomly
going through some stranger. I'm sure he was like a
buddy of mine.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
It wasn't sure it was why you were already in
with these guys. It was just like was it weird
or what?

Speaker 4 (05:18):
It was just like it was so good, Like you're
like really using the space and I'm like.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
It's like I'm really in the movie with this guy.
That was It was great method.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Did Mario take anything from the office.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Oh, he was great.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Man, tell me funny. Yeah, I appreciate you telling you
that story part. That's cool, man, that is so funny.
Hey dude, well, congratulations on everything. Hope to get to
see you in person soon.

Speaker 3 (05:39):

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
