Speaker 1 (00:00):
Mario on with Mario Lopez.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Tabyel Mario Lopez joining now on Zoom Singer actor activist
Clay Aike and welcome to the show man.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, thanks for having.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Me with you.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Nice to see you too. The holiday season, of course,
is upon us. You're releasing the album Christmas Bells are Ringing,
first album in a decade.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
What inspired you to make this?

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Well, you know, I stepped away from from recording and
performing and all that stuff, and maybe twenty twelve or.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
So, so yeah, a little over a decade.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
My son was getting to an age where I wanted
to be around and available for him more, and I
just kind of, you know, had a great run for
those first However, many years after IDOL and kind of
wanted to branch into a few other things. But did
I think we spoke you and I spoke not too
long ago about them. We had Rubin together with Rubin
and I did a tour together last year, and we

(00:56):
did Mass Singer this year also, and just kind of
getting back into to performing a little bit with him
kind of got I tasted the bug?

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Is that?

Speaker 1 (01:05):
What's that? And I you know what I mean? Think
you chased the book? Catch it?

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Do whatever I caught the bug, thank You is caught
my Dinner and taste of the book and uh, and
you know we just made me kind of want to
get back into it.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
And my son is now sixteen, so you don't want
me around anyway. It works out kind of perfectly.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
And Christmas has always been you know, the tours that
I've done that I've always enjoyed the most, So it
kind of made sense to come back and do a
Christmas at again.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Good for you. Well, the first single is do you
hear what I hear? What is it about that track
that made you want to showcase it?

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Well?

Speaker 3 (01:43):
I mean I love the song in general, and I
think there's a lot you can do with it musically.
People kind of look expect me to get big, you know,
the idle big singing, and that song allows you to
do it. But you know, lyrically it it was written
in the sixties as a kind of a response to
the Cuban missile crisis.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
The two folks who wrote it were you worried about
war in that in that time and you know we're.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
We're not we're not headed to war right now, but
but you know, our world could use a little more peace,
I would, I would argue, and that song sort of
felt like the right one to put out. Now it's
not Christmas, you know, you said the Christmas season, it
is uprom us.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
I'm well aware that we.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Haven't hit Halloween yet, but that song, even though people
think of it as a Christmas song, it has a
timeless message of peace, and I think that was why
we wanted to put it out early.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, good time for that. And you also recorded a
song I love, Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka made that
movie to what an awesome song, not necessarily a Christmas song,
but I'm glad you did. You just a big fan
as well.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
It is well, it's not a Christmas song, but if
you listen to it, it's about kids, and I mean
it's everything. Everything about that song, the spirit of it
is sort of the same.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
As the spirit Chritis.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
So Ron Fair, who produced the album, was just really
incredible at taking this idea. I always I want to
do Pure Imagination because I love the song and I
thought it had the spirit of Christmas, and he just
did this incredible job of making it musically Christmas also,
So it's a it's a kind of a neat treat
you know, Favorite Things from Salm and Music is also
not a Christmas song, but people put it on Christmas

(03:17):
albums all the time.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
So why should put this one online?

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Good for you, I like I like that song. I'm
looking forward to hearing your version. I saw you on
Celebrity Family Feud with your son. What's what's he into
right now?

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Well, he's still you know, he is. He is a
pilot already. He if he could, if he could drop
out of high school, would be a pilot right now.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
That's what he'd want to do. He's that's that's his
passion in life, that's his path.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
So family Feud was his first time in sixteen years
that we've let him do anything publicly. We're gonna you know,
we've been pretty careful about keeping him away from the
public eye for the last sixteen years, let him have
a real normal childhood, and then we completely ruined it
by letting him go on family Feud.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
And now he's got this huge head around his high school.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
That's great, he thinks all that, all right, Oh that's fine.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Man.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Has he has he seen any of your idol performances
from back in the day.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I don't know if he's seen idle ones or not.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
He's seen me perform when I was when he was younger,
I had I was still touring a little bit, so
he came to some of those.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
He came to ruben and Ized tour. Obviously he came
to Rubenized Broadway show. But I don't know if he's
seen the idle things or not.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
He might have seen Bridge Up or Trouble Water because
it kind of makes its way around every once in
a while.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
But he has very little interest in anything I'm doing.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah, hey, my kids as well. They could care less,
I think. And uh, of course, with Christmas around the corner,
do do you decorate early? Because we're like on the
heels of Halloween boom, everything's going up.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Well, that's the way the world is.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
I know. We usually do decorating around right after Thanksgiving,
you know, we let we get through the holidays and
then we do a we do a we bring Christmas
in full as soon as Santa comes fur on the
Macy's Parade. That's when Christmas starts. I think that's probably
the I don't know if I shouldn't say that this
year because the album comes out in the twenty second, right,

(05:10):
but if I were not trying to sell an album,
I would say that Thanksgiving week is sort of when
Christmas starts.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Okay, I appreciate the honesty. Well, meanwhile, listen pick up
Christmas bells are ringing on November twenty second, and Clay
always nice to see you man, Thanks.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
