Speaker 1 (00:01):
Mario a little bit. It's up. You're on Mario Lopez
joining me now on Zoom. Three time Grammy nominated artist
Isaac Zack and Taylor Hanson. Welcome back to the show. Guys,
How you doing well? Thanks for having us man, Nice
to see you too. Man. That is a nice looking
Zoom right there. You guys fit perfectly well lit. Are
you in a club? Like? What's going on right there?

(00:21):
Is that somebody's crib or he had somebody's house, the studio,
studio control room. It's got that studio vibe. I love it.
I love it. So you guys were the Russian dolls
and the mass singer. What made you want to do it?
How did you pick that costume? And did you tell anyone?
We We did tell Army family, which is surprisingly large.

(00:42):
My wife was eight months pregnant at the time, so
it was hard to explain to the kids why dad
was leaving for basically a month without telling them something
real had to be like, yeah, I'm going on those
TV shows training to go on the next SpaceX rocket.
He said, I'm going to be for a while, but
it'll be cool when it's done, going to space without you.

(01:03):
That didn't work now. The producers called us and they said, hey,
we want you to be the first group. We've never
done this, and honestly that kind of parked our interest, like, oh, first,
that's fun um. And then the idea of kind of
keeping people guessing that very quickly came into the idea,
and that's where Russian dolls came from. There were a
lot of other ideas, but how do you find something

(01:24):
that kind of intuitively people go, how many are those?
How many of them you do with the whole show?
I mean, one of the things that pushed us over
the edge was it's about singing. You know, we've since
we were kids, we've been singing, even harmonizing, and we
felt like we could bring something different to a show
like this. You know, it's all all been solo performers.
Be the first group and and with that, you know,
you kind of lean into your strengths and you know,

(01:46):
arrange the songs in a way that that is, you know,
caters to that kind of throw people off the scent
by leaning, you know, different guys singing lead on different songs.
So we we kind of like the whole idea, and honestly,
most times in our history you're on tour, you're traveling,
you're promoting a project, and you can't really take opportunities
that come up that are out of the ordinary multi
week yeah, exactly, many weeks you know, doing something, you

(02:09):
know like that. So it was it was something that
just seemed to aligne. No, it was great. And then
all you guys have kids. I'm sure they got such
a kick and and thrill out of that. You mentioned
your song choices um Bruno Mars, Jason Deruloh I love
all the choices there. What would have been your song
for the semis oh Man, Well, we were going to
try and do ah. I think we were trying to
do a boys to men's Yeah, yes, we we love

(02:32):
the idea of some of these groups that were great
vocal groups, but we were trying to keep those for
later in the season so that you weren't taking them
off the list of people who they were guessing, right,
And as soon as you do boys Men, they know
it's some boys men, but they're one of those right now,
still perform as a trio and great voices. Loves being
compared to them because that's such a huge compliment. Yeah,

(02:53):
and there were definitely Wisdoman and then some other classics
that we felt like we'd just get people moving. We
were still trying to swing a big song, see if
we could get at well you you've got great taste.
I like all those artists. A nice job, gentlemen. UM
new album is against the World. Tell me about these songs.
So the records just started coming out. It's releasing in

(03:13):
a unique way. We're releasing it one song at a time,
so it's building UM and then every month essentially all
year long and until it finally is complete. The album
is complete, so people sort of get it like seven singles,
you know, single after single. UM. First track is called Anale.
It's super upbeat, kind of feels like the start of
a journey. We wanted people to kind of it's summertime.

(03:33):
People are, you know, thinking about getting out, kind of
wanting to something to smile about. UM. But the record overall,
as you go through it, people discover I mean the
records all sort of about taking on challenges, kind of
waiting through things. UM, you know, and the record title
even just this idea that you know, anything you do
that is sort of important or you know, oftentimes you

(03:54):
feel like you're up against challenges, but music pulls you
through that connection with others pulls you through that kind
of finding a way through the craziness and through the
challenges is what the journey is all about. The title
could also be taking on the world's challenges, but it
was a little too long, didn't really have a ring.
Do you have a novel? See? I prefer it to
mean don't let yourself be defined by the world, because

(04:16):
I think we see right now, especially because everyone has
been separated in their corners for a year, that we're
letting ourselves kind of let our feeds and and the
fanatical people kind of define what's okay in the world
or how it's it's okay to feel about yourself. Do
you think what I think? Do you feel how I feel?
When you say I'm against the world, it's I'm against

(04:36):
being defined by the world. I'm defined by me. I'm
defined by the people I choose to be with. I'm
defined by the person I choose to be, how I
choose to treat people, and how I choose to world.
It's so important how you see yourself. Um, And that's
really what this first song, Anely is all about. Sort
of the person I want to be deep. I like it, man,
I like and what about what about touring? Are you

(04:57):
making plans to get back on the road or so
the tour there are there are live events coming. We
just announced they're gonna be shows every month that will
be live stream and with limited person tickets, kind of
broadcasting from our hometown in Tulsa, so said Live August
September October. Yeah, those shows. You know, people can come,
you know, make the trick, come to our h q. Um.
There's a few ship tickets left. I mean they are

(05:18):
going super fast, um for all those months, but streaming
tickets available. And then we're actually pointing towards next year
is really going to be the full you know, make
the lap around the world as everything is starting to
open up and kind of get back to normal. We're
just I feel like this is the ramp into a
really active next you know, twelve or fourteen months. Good
for you guys, man. I like that you're keeping it

(05:39):
in the family and uh, you're you're you're keeping it moving.
I love it. Um. Speaking of which, I know you
all got pretty big families. Any musicians in the next generation,
there are a smattering of them, I mean you know,
there's definitely obviously a lot of creativity, and Taylor zach
Or actually quite a good artist beyond just being artists.
I need a little bit of a fallback this thing exactly.

(06:02):
But but you know, each of us have you know,
some a few more musically inclined kids and a few
that are not so interested. It's an extroverts, you know.
I would be very surprised if someone didn't choose an
artistic path or a musical path, but you just never know.
I mean, I have a two month old at home,
so I love with that guy. Congratulations on that, and

(06:27):
congratulations on everything, gentlemen. Always nice to see you guys.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
