Speaker 1 (00:00):
I have one with Mario Lopez.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's up Roald Mario Lopez. Jody Me now on Zoom
for the new movie The bee Keeper actor Josh Hutcherson.
Welcome to show Man.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
How you been. I've been, well, how you've been.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I'm good, buddy, I'm good. Nice to see you.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Now.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I know this movie isn't about bees.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
So what is the premise or it's this day, it's
you know, it's it's Jason Statham ripping heads man. It's
like classic Jason just getting after it. It's it's a
hardcore kind of revenge story. He plays what an our
universe we created. It's called a beekeeper, which is basically
when there are these certain entities that exist outside of
(00:40):
government institutions, outside of any kind of institution at all,
and when things kind of hit the fan, they come
out and they fight for justice to protect the hive.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
That's why they're called beekeepers.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Nice and my character, Derek is this guy who is
a piece of work, absolute crypto bro, billionaire, out of
touch with reality guy.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
And he has this side hustle that.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Basically scams older people out of their life savings. Oh,
I scam a wrong person that activates Jason to come
out of retirement and and try to hunt me down.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
There's people like you that exist in real life, unfortunately,
So unfortunately there are Yeah, oh fucking are Uh you've
got some bold wardrobe choices in this film, rocking snake
skin boots, leopard print shirts. Yeah, how's that compared to
your personal fashion choices?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I mean it's obviously very I mean you can see
what I'm wearing now, it's very uh.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Breadth all the time.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
No, it's uh, you know, I keep it safe, man,
I keep it a lot of neutral colors, dark stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
And Derek is like the polar opposite.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
He does literally mixing snake skin boots with leopard print
shirts and uh it's a lot of gold and greens,
diamond stud earing.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Frosted tips with like a faux hawk shape.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
So he's like he just goes these balls to the
wall and h When designing the character, we kind of
thought about this guy's wildly insecure, has all the money
in the world, and it's completely out of touch with reality.
How would that person dress? And thus you can see
how Derek dresses.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Josh.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I wanted to lead with this just because on a
personal my son, one of my sons, my ten year old,
he is the number one Five Nights of Freddy's fan.
He's seen this damn movie. I'm not exaggerating at least
thirty five times. It's crazy because he watched it himself
over and over and over how kids do. Then he
made every member of my family watch it, my individual
(02:36):
all individually, my dad individually. Then he quizzes you and
he just had a birthday, and so I got him
the whole five Night of Freddy's or Pride Me for Christmas,
the hoodie and all the sin.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
The character.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Dude, he's obsessed. So God, I wish you were here
in person, because I have you shoot him a little video.
But I know that movie far too well. But he
loved it, and I was like, it was the first
movie that he's gotten so passionate about, uh, which I
love and it's the best to see get to kind
of live.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Was he was he into the game beforehand, I.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Don't think so, not to my knowledge at least, but
dove in and he got like he knows everything about
it and the whole deal. And I'm proud of him
because I thought it'd be a little kind of spooky
for him and stuff. But it was fun because obviously
I've seen it with him a lot and I just
love his reaction.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
But were you surprised by all the success? Yeah, man,
it's uh.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
I think it blew a lot of us away that
we're involved with making it. You know, the game, the
finafe like, yeah, that's right, they're they're they're absolutely rabid,
and they they have fan more and there's like so
many iterations of the games and then they're hard they're
right or die type fans. So we knew that it
wouldn't connect, you know, on that level, and then that
(03:56):
was kind of one of the big goals was to
make something that the fans would really it would resonate
with them, and you know a lot of Easter eggs
from the game and the.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Movie and stuff.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
But I think what this movie did that was the
unexpected element and the hope for element was they would
have a big crossover audience. And I think what what
Blumhouse and Universe were able to accomplish with Emma Tammy,
our director, and Scott Cawthorne, was they were able to
kind of it's almost like an intro to horror type tone,
which is very cool and like you said, like the
(04:24):
younger audiences can see it and it's not too scary,
but it kind of opens up because I love horror
films and that genre is I think phenomenal and to
find a movie it's cracking something that people have tried
to crack for a long time, which is how do
you make a horror film that can engage the younger audience,
Because I mean, I know that I saw a scary movie.
I saw The Exorcist.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Way too young, and it's like it to be traumatizing,
and I think that to find something that has those
elements of horror but it's not going to traumatize somebody,
I think it's hard to do.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
But we didn't expect this level of of audience, you know, engagement.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yeah, and that that that and even for like my generation,
that little chuck e cheese feel to.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
It with absolutely Yeah, that's cool.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
And is there a sequel already in the works.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
They haven't confirmed anything yet.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I'm very hopeful and waiting to dive back in. I mean,
the thing is the story we're based in the world
of the games, and there's so many versions of the games,
and they want to find the best way to move forward.
But I'm excited to get back into it.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yeah, it was. It was a fun, fun world to
play in. That's awesome. Good for you.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Also in the works a movie called Little Mouth with
with Dennis Quaid.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Yeah, Dennis is fun man, he's fun. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Story, what can you tell us about that project?
Speaker 1 (05:44):
That was when?
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Actually we shot that last in July maybe or so, yeah, July,
I think. And it's a cool it's actually it's it's
one of those movies that you make and then as
time progresses it becomes more relevant. It's about using AI
and quantum computing to try to contact other species, extraterrestrials.
(06:06):
And my character is kind of this bit of like
a spiritual tech geek kind of guys extremely like well
versed in the world like quantum computing and things like that,
and we build a quantum communications device to try to
reach out and make contact. And Dennis Quaid plays the
kind of the financier of this whole project, and David
(06:31):
Fulis plays the mad scientist, and Isabelle furmanked with the
Hunger Games. She plays my kind of cohort sidekick scientist
in that.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
But it's a fun one. I haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
They're still kind of bringing all together, but it's a cool,
cool movie.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Well, we'll be on the lookout for that. And what's
with all the memes of you and the whistle song?
Speaker 1 (06:51):
You tell me? Mario?
Speaker 3 (06:52):
You you you're more in the world of what people
are doing and.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Up to the night. I have no idea. It came
out of absolutely nowhere. I'm here for. It's fun to
be a part of something like that. It's like the
new role, which is great.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
It was even only the official Democrats TikTok or Instagram
or something with Joe Biden like drinking a coffee cup
and I was there that pop up.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Uh, no idea, but I love it. It's great.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Total coff of veteran mat Well, we really appreciate your time.
Congratulations on everything, and listen, you can watch The Beekeeper
in theaters now. Josh, thanks so much for hanging out
Speaker 1 (07:27):
With Mario Lopez.
