Speaker 1 (00:00):
Come on Mario a little bit. It's Mario Lopez joining
me now on zoom Oscar winning actress Octavia Spencer. Welcome
to the show. So nice to talk to you. It's
so great to see you and talk to you too.
So I gotta tell you right off the bat. I
so appreciate you following me on Instagram. I love when
I see your little name or you have a comment,

(00:21):
your little face right there. That that makes my day
and I and I of course follow you, and I
love the positivity and all the inspirational content. It's uh,
it's fun. It's try to keep up with people, and
it really you know, I didn't realize how wonderful social
media can be because I love following you and your family.

(00:41):
You guys think you're just such great energy and we
need that positive energy out in the world right now.
We need that right now. Thank you so much. Yeah,
it's it's really what you make of it. You're exactly right.
So congratulations on this year the new voice, or you
the voice I should say of this new doc, the
Quest for Sleep. First of all, that sounds like the
story of my life. My goodness, sleep is so incredibly underrated.

(01:05):
I always say what is it about? I'll tell you well,
I I personally have always struggled with with sleep. So
when I was approached to be the voice of sleep
UM Sleep Personified, I thought, this is a magical way
into this relationship. Because there's so many people struggling with sleep.

(01:28):
I happen to be one of them. And if there's
any way to uh highlight or shine a light on
this problem that so many of us are having, UM
and ways that we can improve our relationship with sleep,
I want to be a part of it. Oh wow,
I can't wait to get into it. And I, like you,
UM really struggle and it seems to have gotten worse.

(01:49):
Here's my personal problem. I it's falling asleep. Once I
fall asleep, I'm good to stay asleep. However, I can't
make it through the night without into the restroom at
least once, and then I struggle with going back to
sleep again today the way my hand and say hallelujah.
The same for you too? Is it? Because I don't

(02:10):
know what it is? I know we're both busy people,
but the schedules packed our mind's going or what what
is there? What's the science behind it? Well, that's what's
so important. I think about the film, the way they
approached the scientific aspect of it. You you, I won't
bore you. I will say I would love for you

(02:31):
to watch that. I can tell you what my struggle is,
um and I know that part of my problem is
I just have never been able to turn off my brain.
I am a list maker, and every same person going
from my list, did I do this? Did I do this?
And that's not a way to idle down. It's a

(02:51):
way to keep your brain active. It's like it's like
the modem or whatever running the motherboard, running into in
the computer, you know, constant. I to them, a list maker,
feel so good when you check everything off and you're done.
But it's it's it's a vicious cycle because it's never
ending because then there's a new list. So there's a
difference between that in insomnia. Correct, Well, I I think

(03:14):
it leads to that because I can have the most
productive of days and you know, check off my list,
and you know, you you you sit down and and
and uh at, you know, eight o'clock, nine o'clock what
every time? And next thing I know, the sky is
slight blue, and I haven't had a moment of sleep

(03:37):
because my mind is so active, So it's been a
it's definitely been a struggle, UM, and I just felt
like there was a connection seeing other people struggle with it,
because you know, in our business, we have weird hours.
So when we when we sit in the makeup chair,
that's when we talked about did you get did you

(03:59):
get to sleep? But honestly, throughout the rest of your
you're you're you're weak, and when you're not working in
the industry, how often do you discuss your rest? You
really don't. You're right, you got to make it a
priority and fluid schedules don't help. I'm definitely gonna check
that out. UM. Also in the works a musical, Spirited
with Ryan Reynolds and Will Farrell. Sounds like an awesome cast.

(04:21):
What what can you tell us about that? Oh? I
can tell you that UM is one of the greatest
joys getting to work with both of them together. Sean
Anders is an amazing writer director, and the fact that
we're all singing and dancing is it's it's pretty amazing.

(04:42):
You're gonna see all of us in ways you haven't
seen before. But the big thrill for me was seeing
the two of them, and they are exactly what you
think they are together. Oh that's awesome. So we're gonna
get to see a singing dance. Great. Yeah, I don't know.
I love me a musical. That's awesome. So, Octavia, this
is the tenth anniversary of your big Oscar win for

(05:05):
the Help Classic. Now, what what do you remember that
about that particular night? Oh? I can tell you that. Um,
there aren't things that I actually remember. I remember my
name being called. I remember struggling to get my knees
to ben to to get up the stairs. I didn't
want to fall, you know, in front of a billion

(05:26):
people launching all across the world. Um. And I remember
walking off stage sobbing and collapsing in Sandra Bullock's arms.
It's not a bad place to collapse, not just she
was just like waiting in the wings, and and it
was just a special night for so many reasons. But
that's that's what I remember most. That's an awesome moment

(05:48):
right there. Have you gotten to see any of this
year's Oscar nominees or any particular films you're you're rooting for.
I'm rooting for a lot of people. This has been
an amazing year for films. I have a quite a
few friends that that i've you know, Jessica Chastain, Anganue, Ellis,
will Smith, uh, Jesse Plemon's heirsons. I mean, the list
is long of of of amazing performances that we've seen

(06:12):
this year. Um. Yeah, a lot of great performances. And
I love that Jessica, the bond you guys have, she's
been She's been on quite a streak right now too
with Tammy Faye. Um. I saw on Twitter you picked
Auburn to win March Madness this year. I'm assuming that's
your alma mater right there, there's a noun. Let me,
let me get her. We you know, my good luck charm.

(06:33):
We watched the games together, that basketball whatever. We can
see You're serious a lot of I love the loyalty
right there. And where his homes these days? Are you?
Are you a West Coast girl? Are these coast I've
been a West Coast girl, uh for about twenty five years.
But home is always where your heart is, and my
heart is still on the planes at over. So I'm

(06:53):
excited about that. Oh that's awesome. Well, congratulations on everything.
I love this opportunity to get to catch up with
you and listen. You can watch The Quest for Sleep
now on YouTube and video on demand. I'm gonna be
checking it out, Octavia. Thank you so much for checking in.
Thank you so good to see you, honey. Okay you too,
hope to see him person. Yes, okay, bye, thank you.
