Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're on with Mario Lopez.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Mario Lopez joining me now on zoom Oscar winning actor
and the singer of Indoor Garden Party, My Man, one
of my favorites. Mister Russell Crowe, Welcome to the show, sir.
How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:13):
How you doing man? I'm pretty good. I'm pretty good.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
We're like I think this is gig eighteen of twenty
eight or something like that. So we've been I mean,
we played glaston Rey Festival. We've been in Dublin, we
played Paris, we played at the Coliseum, we played at
the ancient Ambitheater, and Pompeii, Ascali, Piceno, piacenze Versi. We
(00:37):
had twelve thousand people in Siena. Where else we've been
Diamonte Capooso.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
So we've got.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Five more shows in Italy, but we've also been through
England too. We played in London, we played the Leeds,
we played in Vaness. We got five more shows in
Italy and then we come to America and we're do
on both coasts. We've be in New York, New Jersey,
then Los Angeles, then we go middle to Tulsa, Oklahoma,
and we go to Austin, Texas. And then the tour
(01:08):
finishes in New Orleans at Tippotina's.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
That is an incredible legit world tour covering everything you're
currently in Italy. I believe at the moment you mentioned
the coliseum that had a bit of be a bit
surreal and sort of cool where people showing up in
in certain attire to sort of celebrate you.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
No, it was.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
It was actually a private event put on by the
City of Rome, but they allowed us, you know, certain
amount of tickets and through the grace of a sponsor,
we had the Optical Express helping us up with that.
Actually we were able to then just give the tickets
away so we could sort of just let anybody who
wanted to really wanted to come come into the space,
(01:56):
So that was cool. But the city also put a
screen outside the event arena so anybody who was hanging
around could watch the show as well, So that was
really nice.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
That is really really nice. And for those are also
who may not be familiar with Indoor Garden Party, how
would you describe the band's sound.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Well, we cross over a lot of different sort of
genres and grooves. Man, you know, we we touched into
a little bit of gospel. We did some blues, some
country stuff, you know, some straight out rock and roll.
You know, there's a couple of sort of singery songwritery
moments in the show as well, you know, but really,
you know, our main job is to make sure people
have a great time by the end of the night.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
You know, we understand what that job is and that's
what we aim for. Man. So you know, there's a
lot of stuff speckled.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Out through the specs throughout the show that if you
don't necessarily know into a garden party, you will know.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
That song, you know.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
So and we kind of adapt and our mood a
little bit too to where we're playing like currently in Italy,
we finished the night, you know, I did a sort
of joke gag with the audience. You know, we're not
to a conzole, We're not to a conzone. I go
through Canzoni Italiano. Then we do it do a song
(03:09):
in Italian now, So yeah, so we haven't definitely haven't
fun with it, man.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
I've had that's really really cool. And the new album
is pros and cons. What inspire these songs.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Well, what I wanted to do was an album that
sort of balanced out between originals and covers.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
So the pros p oo s E is for.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Stands for the originals, and the cons stands for the covers.
You know, a lot of these songs, it's just, you know,
the same sort of thing. Something happens in your life,
You observe something, you know, you go through a certain situation,
and and you know the way to process that is it,
you know, eventually comes out as a song, you know.
So I've been working on this album probably since twenty nineteen,
(03:53):
when I was shooting The Loudest Voice in New York.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
I started.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I wrote the first couple of songs for the album then,
and it's just taking that amount of time through COVID.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
We've got a recording.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
We're hanging out together a bunch, but we didn't do
any shows. But then last year we did a big
tour of Australia. We did like twenty five shows in Australia,
then Malta and a couple of shows in Italy, and
those shows were the impetus for us coming back to
Italy this year. I think we're doing like fifteen concerts
in total in Italy. But we also did England, Like
I said, in Scotland, and Ireland, and we played in
(04:25):
France too, so yeah, I mean it's sort of starting
to build its own thing, and people are listening.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
To the album a little bit, so it's cool.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
I actually, I'm really interested to get back to American
meta because I haven't played live in America. I if
I stop and think about it, I think the last
time I toured America would have been twenty twelve.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
So it's been a minute four years ago. It was crazy.
That's crazy, that's absolutely crazy, you know.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
I mean I really cut down the live shows when
I had kids, you know, because you know, you're away
from movie and then you come home for a day
and you're back on a music tour. So I sort of,
you know, I sort of like paired it right down,
and I only would do things every couple of years.
But you know, my youngest is about to finish high
school this year, so things are ramping up again. And
(05:14):
the boys really like coming on too with me as well.
Yeah that's fun, you know. And my oldest has actually
for half this tour he was getting up and doing
a song with the band, but he's gone back because
he had university restarting.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
So oh, that's that's the best. That's got to be
the best thing in the world. My kids play as well,
play piano, drums, oh yeah, yeah. My daughter's now playing
guitar and stuff. So there's nothing cooler than that. Before
I ask you about the tour in America too, I
know you recently performed with Andrea Pacelli. That must have
been very, very cool. Bit of a high pressure all imaginably.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
A couple of years ago, he called me and he said,
what I like to come and do this thing? And
it just so happened. I was actually on holiday with
my kids, and you know, we don't really get that
much time together, you know, between school and all that
sort of stuff lost in here, so I kind of
examined it, and you know, I could understand it. There's
(06:10):
a you know, a great opportunity and a privilege to
be asked and everything. But I had to call them
back and say, listen, man, I'm just going to stick
with the kids, all right, I'm sorry, you know, and
I said, look, you know, maybe if you know, in
the future you want to do this, just you know,
give me a little bit more time. So almost immediately
I got a form of invitation and a date for
(06:32):
like a year and a bit off.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
And so this time around I made it, you know,
and it was so cool. Man the top of a
mountain in Tuscany at the Ancio and I go out
and do a song and you know, my piano player
is Andre Paicelli.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Wow. You know, it's pretty special. That is. I just
heard the audio from it today too.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
And even in the middle of the tour and all
the logistic or crazyness with transport car rides and economy
flights because it's you know, it's ban dollar time.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
My voice held up pretty well for the concerts of Nice. Nice.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Do you happen to know where you're playing in l A.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Yeah, August fourteenth, We're at the Whiskey of Yoga.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Oh awesome.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
So we've got a kind of a kind of a
good man excellent.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
That's nice.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
A really cool mix of like classic rock and roll
venues and just interesting places.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Yes, we start off in America.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
We play at the Stone Pony in Asbrey Park, you know,
the home of Bruce Springston, ground of Bruce Springsteen. Then
we play Sony Hall in New York City, which is
a great rock and roll venue. Then we fly across
the country for the show the Whisky. Then we go
to the River Spirit in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Then we play
Stubbs Barbecue and Austin, which is a great venue, and
(07:55):
then we finish off at Tippetina's, which is like, you know,
eight hundred seed did old film like Theater Vibe in Orleans,
like one of the homes of music. So really looking
forward to that, Man, it's gonna be fantastic.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
That's impressive that you can remember all those days. I
would have to look at my phone constantly for the schedule.
I don't even know what's going on tomorrow in my schedule.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
You've got the imprinted in my brain.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
I've been repeated so many times, it's like stamped, you know, in.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Uh in the works as well during all this tour.
And you also have a film called roth Goo where
you play painter Mark Roth Though, is there anything you
can tell us I haven't.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
I haven't done that. I haven't done that yet.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
That hasn't been set up yet that they've been talking
about that for a number of years.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Got it.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
I was still connected to it, but they haven't done it.
But what's cool at the moment is last week I
had a number one film on Netflix.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Land of Bad.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
Yes, currently it's about it's number three in the world,
but also on Hulu. I have another one of my
movies called Sleeping Dogs as number one. Later on in
the year, we've got the big Marble Sony Dark Universe
film Craven the Hunter player.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Russian spider Man villain.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Right, spider Man villain?
Speaker 1 (09:04):
What was that?
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Spider Man villain.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Craven the Hunter is yes, yeah, but I play his father.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Oh got it?
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Ok?
Speaker 3 (09:12):
So I'm I'm Superman's dad, I'm God of Gods. Yes,
and I'm also the father of Craven the Hunter.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
That makes perfect sense because all those characters need to
have some gravitas or they need someone like it. Perfect sense,
Like I totally get it with the casting real quick,
before you go, what are your feelings on the Gladiator sequel?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Russell, Well, let me tell you about another thing that
I did earlier this year, which is okay, exciting, and
we'll get to that in a second.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
You got it. Just in terms of what my latest
work is.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
So, we shot a movie called Nuremberg, which is about
the war the trials will war crime trials at the
end of the Second One War, and I play Hermann goering.
So that is we're a whole bunch of absolutely fantastic actors. Man,
you've got Ramy Malick, Michael Shannon, Richard E Grant, Parker
(10:05):
Bryant and New Finlander, You've got Leo wood Or it's
just a fantastic cast. And really looking forward to what
we did with that, because it felt very.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Intense while we were shooting it. You know now that
I've really got no publicly discussable opinion. I'm a new Gladiator,
you know.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
I mean, and I say it like that because I've
been asked. I haven't been asked to participate or discuss
this in any way, so I have no idea where
they've taken the plot, how they've said things or whatever,
you know, you know, I mean, it was an incredible
(10:52):
moment in my life when I did that movie, you know,
And it's pretty fantastic that Ridley Scott is still around
as a filmmaker to be able to twenty five years
later reimagine the way a sequel might work, you know,
because we did discuss it pretty heavily at the time.
But I think once a movie has become, you know,
the best film of the year, and when the Academy
(11:12):
Award and all.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
That sort of stuff.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
It has a certain, you know, there's a certain sacrisanct
aspect to it, and you didn't want to sort of
jump up and you know, there were suggestions that you know,
suddenly Maximus just before he becomes alive again, and I
was like, well, to me, that kind of is the
wrong note to play with that, you know. So I
know that they've the sequel is set like thirty years
(11:35):
later or something like that, you know, but that's pretty
much or I know, and I don't personally know any
of the young blokes that are in it. Obviously I
made Denzel and Connie Nielsen's in.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
It as well.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
But yeah, it's kind of a difficult situation to be in, man,
because every man and his dog are asking me fifty
thousand questions about.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
It, and I just don't know.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
You know, Maximus passed away, he's six foot under Yeah,
he's in you know, you know he's going to be
there because he's buried underneath it, right right, he's the
grab of the c Couliseum, so he's there something with
just these bones.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Anyway, absolutely there and spread. When I first heard about it,
I thought the balls to try to follow up that classic.
I'm like, damn, just makes me want to see the
original even that much more. I so appreciate you taking
the time. Congratulations, good luck with the rest of the tour.
I look forward to seeing you live in August at
the Whiskey Ago right here in LA and listen. You
can find tickets and tour dates to indoor garden party
(12:31):
at on with Mario dot com. Thank you so much
for hanging out. I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Cheers Man's just nice to see it, and I will
see it at the Whiskey Go Go.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
You got it, La.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Yes, I look forward to that. Have a great show.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Jeers Man with Mario Lopez.
