Speaker 1 (00:00):
On with Mario A.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Lititz's a Mario Lopez joining me now on Zoom the
prod of San Diego Grammy winning band switch for Welcome
to the show, gentlemen, how are you hello? Well, hey
San Diego in the house. I know you all are
from Carlsbad. I happen to be from Chula Vista, so
great way to represent right there. It is the twentieth
anniversary of your iconic album, The Beautiful Letdown. But this

(00:25):
record almost didn't come out. Huh what's the story?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yeah, you gotta think of like back in those days.
This is uh, you know, two thousand and three. As
a band, you're thinking, Man, I can't wait to get
signed by a major label. Maybe we could actually become
a real band. And that happened. We got signed, we

(00:51):
made the record, and just before the record comes out,
the label says these songs are no good.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
We're dropping you.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Oh wow, that's that's not what you want to hear.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, So we had this kind of existential moment where
we have to ask ourselves.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Do we think this song are any good? You know?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
And do we feel like the records is still come out?
Are we worth? Is it worth fighting for? And kind
of looked at each other and said, yeah, you know,
I really believe in this record.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Let's go for it. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Two million copies later, the record company is like, all right,
you can come back.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
You're back on the team, You're one of us.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Wow, look at that. Look at that sort of like
a chick who doesn't want to date you. Then other
girls want you now, they want you back.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
So it was definitely but I'm thankful for even even
for that moment because I think it it really galvanized
us as a band to really, you know, I think
through why are we doing this and and what's it worth?
And and and to move forward as a u it you.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Know, yeah, absolutely, And now you're releasing you're releasing a
new edition the Beautiful let Down our version, So what's
different about this one?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
So we basically said, you know what, that version is
the one that the label dropped. Let's make one for
us and the rest of the underdogs out there. Okay,
that is it reflects the twenty year journey we've been
on since that first record came out.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
That's cool, man, that's cool. And you're also launching a
new North American tour playing the album in its entirety,
which is great. Are there some songs that that you
needed a refresher on.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
That?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:36):
I mean there's there's some songs on that album that
that we never really played live, you know what I mean. Yeah,
you're you're playing like the opening slot on festivals, like
opening for other bands at that stage. You're not playing
an hour and a half, you know, so they're playing like,
you know, a shorter set. So there's some songs that
we played maybe only once or twice live. So it's

(02:57):
gonna be.

Speaker 4 (02:57):
It's gonna be a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, that'll be interesting, will be a lot of fun.
And what about families? Does everyone hit the road with
you or is it just the fellas.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
We are married to different women, which is good. Yeah,
we feel like that's important. Yeah, no, we we I
love like it's.

Speaker 4 (03:16):
It's been really interesting with COVID. We've been home so much,
you know.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
You.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
I think for a lot of people around the world,
you could say I had a rhythm before COVID and
now there's a different rhythm now, you know. Certainly for
touring musicians, I think that that's definitely the case. And
the kids, you know, whenever it makes sense to bring
the kids, we bring them. For example, we had a
show in Disney World last week.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Perfect bring the kid.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, your kids exactly. Yeah, there's a healthy balance. I
agree with you on that. And what was this video
as of y'all crowdsurfing at a festival?

Speaker 4 (03:55):
Why was everyone so money?

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, it's like like kind of the craziest rainstorm New
Zealand's had in the past sixty years. Wow. And we
were supposed to be playing this festival and we show
up and they're they're literally having the meeting of how

(04:17):
do we cancel the festival well where people won't get hurt,
everyone will leave orderly. And we're like, hey, listen, I
don't know if it's any help, but we're our stuff
is set up. We'll play, you know if that would
be helpful to you guys. And they're like, yeah, actually
we need them to hold off for an hour before

(04:38):
we before we start transporting people out because the roads
are too muddy to get anyone out.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
So we're like, let's go. So we basically we joined
them the muddy Kiwis and muddy Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Bet that's probably fun, man. That was probably a lot
of fun. And what about social media, you guys, have
you embraced it on TikTok ig, Twitter?

Speaker 4 (04:59):
What do you do? We're fairly social.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, we're always trying to figure out ways to use
it for good, you know what I mean, Like, there's
plenty of ways to use it otherwise, and but it's
an opportunity to connect with people.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
You know, we embrace it.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Our fans are awesome, and yeah, social media is a
way for us to kind of keep the conversation going
around the world even when we're not on tour.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
Exactly, and you can talk.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Remember when I was a kid, I would I would
write actual, like physical letters to my heroes and bands
and they would send back a sticker or something.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
You know. I feel like this is the next logical
extension of that.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yeah, that's a good analogy. I remember doing that to
you as a kid, which is great. Well, congratulations guys,
and good luck to you on the upcoming tour. The
Beautiful Letdown our version drops on May fifth, Sinkle to Mile.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
There you go.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
You can get take for the new switch for tour
at on with Mario dot Com. Thanks so much training
out and taking the time.

Speaker 4 (05:58):

in San diego yeah, man, six one nine, there we go.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
You guys are eight five eight now right, dude, we're yeah,
we're seven thix oh seven six oh ship. See he's
been like all this. Usually the whole thing is gonna
be six one nine, I forget seven, six oh eighty
five eight, all of them right there.

Speaker 4 (06:14):
