Speaker 1 (00:01):
With Mario a little bit. You're a Mario Lopez joining
me now on Zoom. Two time Grammy winning artists and
producer t pain. What's going on? Man? How's it going? Brother?
What's going on? I'm good? I'm good? You look are you?
Are you in the studio right now? Your office? That's
a cool looking place. Studio right now. I'm in the studio, man,
just you know, in between work, just getting it in,
(00:22):
you know. Up now. I like it. I like it
grinding away. Um, you've joined the TBS competition Go Big
Show for a season two. For those who may not
be familiar, how does this compare to other talent shows,
I'll tell you what, man, it's a lot more dangerous.
I didn't know what so much danger was gonna be
involved in. Uh, lots of fire, more fire than I
thought would be regulated inside of a building. But it happens. Uh,
(00:45):
you know, with all the COVID restrictions and stuff, we
couldn't get too close to any about it, but they
would let us get super close to fire. Yeah. Nine
and blocks of ice that were it was. It was
a lot, man. I wasn't expecting. I didn't know what
to expect, but I wasn't expecting that at all. Pretty
wild acts, right, Like, what are some of the things
you've seen, Oh, man, acrobatics on motorcycles. Uh, you know,
(01:08):
dudes breaking through ice, aerial acts, people hanging by their hair.
I got a knife thrown at me, I got to
hit somebody in the ball super hard as I was.
I feel like that was pretty cool. Um, it was
a lot, man, it was. It was a good amount.
I had a lot of had a lot of good
acts on there. Man, it's a bullfighter. Uh, I was
(01:28):
just a man. Yeah, it was. It was crazy. How
would you describe your style of judging? Uh, my style
of judging, I think I think I have a lot
of compassion. But at the same time, it's like, you know,
we gotta be honest with ourselves. There your actors whack
and you're just going off a shock value for like
a couple of seconds, and it doesn't really require a
lot of talent, And you know, you gotta get out
(01:50):
of here to get some people in here that have
worked on their skills for years and not just somebody
that's got a shot value real quick. You know what
I'm saying. It's it's it's not a not a a
sideshow acts, this is a this is a this is
a whole skill based match making type things. So you know,
we we uh, we try to collaborate on our judgment,
but when we're back there in the room making our definits,
(02:12):
I'm like, man, get this guy out of gotta keep
it real, okay, but in front of the contents, and
I'm a little market bastman. Um. The other judges are
Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Nettles wrestler Cody Rhodes. It's an e
collected bunch right there. Who you kicking with backstage? Um? Cody? Mostly.
You know, Cody and I lave not too far from
(02:32):
each other, and you know, I go to matches sometimes
and uh yeah, I think we I think we're kicking
the most. We always, you know, text back and forth
stupid stuff, and I think, yeah, I think me and
Cody are the closest hang for sure you grapple with him, yet, No,
I'm not gonna do that. I'm definitely not all right.
Fair enough, Let's talk a little music. Man. Latest single
(02:52):
is I'm cool with that? You sound like a pretty
laid bad guy in real life? Is that the deal? Yeah,
it's pretty much the deal man just kind of ever
go just go with the flow. Man, I'm cool with that.
You know, whatever happens happens that they can happen, I'm
cool with that. Yeah, man. Uh, it was. It was
a special track because I did the whole thing live,
like on Twitch, made the beat from scratch on Twitch
in front of people, in front of thousands of people,
(03:14):
recording the song in front of thousands of people. Uh,
employed other Twitch streamers to come on and play instruments
on the song. So the whole thing was comprised on
Twitch and we put it out and you know, even
let some of the Twitch chat in the comments write
the song with me. So it was. It was. It
was a pretty well put together song just off of
the internet. It was really cool. You also got a podcast,
(03:36):
Nappy Boy Radio saw highlights on i G. Did you
really buy your boy a card? I did? I did? Um.
You know. Loyalty helps, man, you know, especially when it's
not deep rooted in uh, you know, uh, vulnerability or
anything like that. When somebody really wants to be loyalty
and they're not just being loyal just to say I'm
(03:56):
loyal that, you know, it shows and it really. You know,
it really shows the longevity and how how long people
can be around you without getting annoyed. Uh. Yeah, it
goes a long way. Man. Yeah, we've been frames man
twenty years. So you know it's about time I got
a guy that books. I've known you for ten Now,
(04:16):
where's my car? So you need another ten player? He said,
twenty years. Um, A lot a lot of people saw
that Netflix doc on auto tune and you and us
are cool now, oh yeah, we're super good. We've never
not been cooled. Like you know what I'm saying. I've
never had a problem with us. I never even in
that prison. I never said, you know, just sucks or
(04:37):
anything like that. Right, He just kind of kind of
triggered something that was already happening. And I know, yeah,
I've never had a problem. Just don't be calling Jason
Drulo usher. He might throw hands. Yeah we're not doing that.
Not doing that, and was going straight hey man, go
right out the gate, yo, you wild it out on
that way, and like, you know what tripped me out
about that? Like called he called the musher someone cool.
It wasn't like he called them like some whack as.
(05:00):
You know what I'm saying you think that's a compliment,
like he didn't call him Google. So when the video
first came on, When the video first comes on, the
guy next to the guy record and say yo, record this,
record this, and then the guy that's it records saying
yo ussher, fuck you bitch. And then that's when Jason
Deruth so damn. It wasn't just like yo, I thought
(05:22):
you were user right right right right, yeah, but the
heat was yeah, but he wouldn't drop an rcle bombs
on him or something that's a trip me. You know,
he caught him with card a bit like all right, thanks,
But it was clearly already something happening before that video
because the guy right right right right right, yeah, yeah, no,
I get you, Yeah, I get you. It's hard to believe. Man.
(05:45):
Your song with flow Rider low trans fifteen this year.
Was there a moment fifteen years old, ten millions old worldwide?
I think we're good? You are good? Man. Is there
a moment when you thought, oh this is gonna pop? No,
not at all, not at all. Um. I think when
I got my first Disney check, I think that's when
it was like, Okay, maybe I can keep this going.
(06:06):
This is co Uh. It was. It was a couple
of things about the song that really just kept pushing
and kept going up and up and up, and I
kept seeing it everywhere, and it kept going viral every
couple of years and it just go rowl again, and
I'm like, all right, let's keep this going. And then
I got the Diamond Award for selling ten million copies
of that one song. Yeah alright. I mean at that point,
that's when I was like, yeah, pop the gift that
(06:31):
keeps on giving. That's the best right there. Man. And
you got uh you got three kids? How many kids
you got? Yeah? Yeah? How today? Uh? Seventeen, fifteen, thirteen?
And what are they in two right now? Do you
know what? I just don't even know. They they don't know.
I keep asking them, what what's going on with you?
What are you into right now? I know my daughter,
(06:53):
the oldest, she's uh, she's doing animation, um and she
wants to design video games. And my uh, my older son,
he just he's just like, man, just keep buying me backpacks,
put stuff in him. Uh my youngest son, I don't know.
He just wants to take stuff apart, just behind a screwdriver,
(07:14):
find out what the screws are taking apart. See what
the inside looked like. Look, that's how I started. That's
how I started building computers and stuff like that. So
there you go. Yeah, just don't leave, don't leave those
parts on the ground and walk around exactly. He seems
like a cool dad. Man. I'm sure. I'm sure those
kids have a good time with you right there. Well,
congratulations on the show again. It's go Big Show Thursdays
(07:39):
on TBS T Pain. Thanks for hanging out on man, absolutely,
thank you. Brother. You gotta take care with Mario a
little bit.
