Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, friends, welcome in after show podcast. It is on.
I am here Justin by myself today. I did not
want to bother anybody and bring them on, just a
quick check in to let you guys know what's going on.
I want to say thank you first and foremost for
listening to this after show podcast. I can't say that enough.
I enjoy doing it, even if it's by myself, even
(00:20):
if I'm just checking in and talking about things going
on in my life. I appreciate that. I love hearing
from you guys.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Hey, Justin, I was really moved by your podcast yesterday,
recalling your history of drug addiction and the painful places
it took you, living on the streets, going to jail,
your family's restraining order against you, eating Thanksgiving dinner in
the basement. This was also my son's history, but he
is not here today to tell his story. He died
of a drug over dose in two thousand and eight.
(00:47):
I loved him very much and miss him very much.
Why do some people make it out while others do not.
We'd love to hear your opinion and thank you for
all you do.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Well. I'm sorry for your losson and yeah, it's a
really That's a question that guests gets asked all the
time in the addiction recovery community, is why do some
people pass away and others don't. I can say that
it should have been me. It could have been me many, many,
many times. There were so many times that you know,
(01:16):
I used, I went out and for some reason I
woke up. I think it's kind of a luck thing maybe,
you know. I think nowadays with fetanol and no longer
being heroin, where people are using by themselves and then
they're not waking up. And I have a cousin that
passed away. His name was Billy. This was a very
(01:37):
very tragic thing. He was a couple of years younger
than me, and he had spent a lot of time
trying to get clean. He moved up to where I was.
I was working with him, he was going to meetings
and he was in a recovery program up now where
I live. And you know, I was having a conversation
actually recently with his younger brother. And his younger brother,
Michael was talking to me and he said, oh, I
(01:59):
saw your new piece on WCVB. I'm so proud of you.
And you know, he's like I always think about it
sometimes like why did it have to happen to my brother?
You know, why do some people get it and some
people don't. And it was that was one of those situations.
You know, he was doing good. He was kind of
off and on, but he was doing good. He had
a relapse, but he was in his room by himself
and he used, probably had no expectation that he was
(02:21):
gonna anything would happen, and he overdosed and you know,
there was no one to help him. And that was
actually the so I got hired on the Maddie in
the Morning Show in January of twenty seventeen. This is
in March twenty seventeen, is when he passed. And I'll
never forget. I got the call that morning. I was
(02:44):
at work, and it was I believe it was my
wife because his mom had reached out to her. She
knew I was working, that they couldn't get a hold
of him, and she was worried and we ended up
sending a friend of ours to his place and it
was just it was just horrific rip to Billy Man,
a great kid. My cousin love him so much, and
his mom is my mom's twin sister. So yeah, you know,
(03:08):
and I've lost so many friends. It's just so hard,
you know. But I always just say to people that
are struggling, if you're alive, no matter what situation your
life is in, no matter how far at the bottom
you are, if you are breathing, you have a shot
at recovery, in a better life, no matter how grim
it looks right now. Trust me, because every bottom has
(03:29):
a trapdoor. It's like a it's like an elevator or
whatever you know has a tress. So you think you've
hit the bottom, you can always go lower, but at
any time you can get off of the elevator and
you can change your life. That's always what I tell people.
So thank you for that talkback. I appreciate it. You
can leave talkbacks. I love coming into work in the morning.
I always check the talkbacks for the Billy and Lisa Show,
(03:50):
and there's a separate part for the after show which
you can leave on the iHeartRadio app. That's where you
have to leave the talk back on the app. So
leave us a talk back into on Nurse Fiona is
going to be in. I got some talkbacks from her.
That's gonna be fun. We're gonna have Jess from the
bull Join Us who was working with Nurse Fiona two.
Because Lloyd knows I don't know much about skin stuff,
(04:11):
and you know, that's not really up my alley. Obviously,
I'm getna laser hair removal from there. She's done botox
from me, so I can talk about that stuff weight loss,
but not so much the skin stuff. So any questions
you have for Nurse Fiona about any of that, please
send it in the weight loss program. Any kind of
skin questions that you have bowtox, especially with the colder weather.
(04:32):
I know a lot of people have questions about you know,
how that affects your skin and aging and all that stuff.
I never paid enough attention to my skin. Actually when
I was getting layser of hair removal on my back.
I have some issues going on on my back, some
ingrown hairs that I need her to help me with
because that's a problem. So yeah, that's going on. Christmas
(04:53):
is coming up. I'm trying to get Christmas gifts for
my family, my wife. Although my wife does a lot
of the shopping for my our kids for her, you know,
she kind of sends me a list. I try to
surprise her a little bit but this is the issue.
It's not really an issue. But so back in the summertime,
(05:14):
my wife and I talked about a vacation and I
talked on the show about this, and I love Aruba.
We went for our anniversary last year, and so we
want to bring the kids back. So we looked at
at the year and we thought the best time would
be March. You know, but obviously it's expensive, you know.
And I know I work on the radio, but you know,
I'm not rich, you know, I do fine. I feel
like I manage money. Well that's that's kind of my explanation,
(05:37):
explanation when you hear me talk about you know, I
have this house, and I have asana, and I have
an ice bath, and I have four wheel lists, which
I've gotten rid of. It's not that I have all
this money to buy them. I just can. I learned
how to manage money. And what that means is I
have good credit, which I've worked for. I have a
really good credit score. So I have a credit card
which I use to buy things. But I'll make a
(05:58):
big purchase and then I will not use it again
or try until I pay it off. And it's a
system that's worked for me over and over. So for example,
the sauna. The sauna, I got a little bit of
a discount because of New England spas. You know, they
gave me like a couple of grand off, but it
was still like seven grand. So I put that on
a credit card and then for the next several months,
(06:19):
I would just keep throwing money at it, money at it,
money at it, and I didn't make any other big
purchases until it was paid off. I did the same
thing with my hot tub, same thing with my fall wheelers.
Like I'm not out here like drop and Dough. You know,
I just can manage money. So in booking Aruba, you know,
it's a lot of money. And so I said to
my wife, why don't we do this? I said, I'll
pay for the trip. You know, I have a credit card.
(06:40):
I'll put it on a credit card, I'll pay it
off and that'll be like the Christmas gift, the big
Christmas gift for the family. Because you know, we're kind
of moving away from just well most so able, but gifts,
you know, physical things so much so many physical things
as opposed to memories and experiences. Because I had a
quote one time that you know, when you grow up,
(07:01):
you don't really remember all the toys that you got,
but you remember the experiences and the places that you
went and the things that you did, and the time
that you spent with your family. So that really stuck
with me. So that's what I want to start doing.
So I booked the Aruba trip, happy to do it.
But now here we are at Christmas, and I can't
be the one that's like, hey, I'm not going to
(07:22):
buy you all these things because look, I just spent
all these this money, these thousands of dollars on this
trip because it's kind of forgotten those months ago, you know.
But in my head, I'm thinking like, man, like I
can spend all this money, but I did that. I
don't know, hopefully you can fail what I'm saying. I'm
not saying I'm not buying Christmas gifts. I am, but
(07:44):
I'm not trying to like go overboard, which I probably
end up I will end up doing anyway, I'm trying
not to go overboard because I just spent this money.
I'm I'm still paying it off. So remember my rule.
I'm managing money, you know, no more big purchases until
I pay that off. I'm trying my best to stick
to it. So but it's not bad. Like my wife
sent me up a bunch of stuff. I learned a
(08:05):
trick and this is for any guys that listen or
females too. During the year, and this this is what
Billy and Lisa too, same exact thing. During the year.
There were a couple of times where items came up
and my wife said, oh, I would really like that,
and I wrote it down. I made it a habit,
so I have a notes in my phone, so I
(08:26):
wrote down so one of them I know she doesn't
listen to this podcast, god forbid. One of them was
a Starlight calendar. It's a it's a digital calendar that
you can hang up in your house because we have
a calendar with the dry erase board, which she swears by,
but she wants the Starlight calendar, which is all digital.
It's really funky. And she said she wanted it literally
(08:49):
at the beginning of the year, and I wrote it
down and I got it for her. So when I
asked her on some things that she wanted, she did
not list that because I think she forgot. But me,
I had notes and I bought it. So that's one
thing I got her, and you know, she sent me
some other things that she wanted. Obviously, there are little
things that I know that she likes and that I'll get.
My son wants all baseball stuff. You know, he's moving
(09:12):
away from the toys and all that. He wants like
a video game. He wants all baseball stuff. So I'm
working on that. And then my daughter, you know, she's three,
so she wants barbies and all that. I let my
wife handle that. So I'm feeling pretty good. Oh, Billy,
I think I got I'm all set. Lisa, I think
(09:32):
I'm all set. I got her for one thing I
got her is the Hailey baber Road collection. I don't know,
some kind of skin. It's like a package of all
different things. I feel like that's good for her. I
have to think about something else. One of our listeners
did send some ideas which I really like to so
I'm looking into those as well. They're not easy to
buy for Billy and Lisa. You almost have to get
(09:53):
Billy like really practical things or goofy things, you know,
like I'm gonna get him car wash, give ctipacates. He
likes those. I do that every year and then I
got him that mug of me when I was fat
last year, so that was fun. I was thinking about
getting him I don't know if you would like it, though,
he might get annoyed. So you know how he goes
on the car wash rants about how he doesn't want
(10:15):
to like subscribe. You know. They try to get him
to join the club at the car wash for a
monthly fee, and he refuses to do it, which I
don't get because he goes so much. I was thinking
about getting him a year's worth at the car wash
and put it under my like I'll pay for it
every month for a year. But he might get annoyed
at that and he might just be like, no, here's
(10:35):
a bunch of money. No, you're not doing that. But
that would be cool so he doesn't have to worry
about it, Like I'll buy it. I'll get the sticker,
put it on his car, and for the next year
he gets unlimited car washes. I feel like that would
be a good idea. I have to ask his wife
about that. I always ask Michelle. I'll text her and
she'll give me ideas. But a lot of ideas that
I pitched he's like, no, he's not gonna like that,
(10:56):
Like I wanted to get on the Galaxy airbuds that
go with the Android phone because he has an Android,
and she's like no. He says that no AirPods fit
in his ear. He's tried many, many many and they
do not fit, so don't get him those. I'm like, okay,
but it's not easy. And by the way, I used
to have Winnie buy all the gifts, by the way,
like we come up with the ideas and then I
(11:16):
would just venmore and she would just buy all the
gifts for me. But she can't do that this year,
so I'm on my own. But I'll be fine. And
then Producer Riley, I just give cash too, because and
I do not accept gifts from her. But because you
might remember when I first started on this show, So
when I okay, So I started as an intern in
(11:36):
twenty eleven or twenty ten, ten, twenty eleven, somewhere around there.
And so I was in school until twenty twelve when
I graduated, and then I was still coming in and
working for free when I shouldn't have been, but I was.
No one told me to. I did it on my own,
and then I got hired part time and throughout all
this I was cooking at Friendlies. So then fast forward,
I ended up on Jamming. I ended up on several
(11:57):
different shows there. I was the executive producer, co host
or executive producer on The Frankie and Ashley Show. And
then you know, I was start making a little bit
more money. Like I was at forty grand and I
was at fifty grand. I got full time a health insurance,
but it still wasn't enough to really live. So I
was cooking at friendlies while working in radio. So I
would work in the day and then I would flip
(12:17):
burgers at night. Literally. But as I started to be
on JYM and become known more, it was embarrassing, so
I didn't tell anybody. And when I got hired on
the Maddie Show, I was still working two nights a
week at Friendlies, behind the line, and you know, I
would like hide back there. I didn't want people to
see and so I didn't make any I didn't have
(12:38):
any money. So for Christmas, I think the first year
I worked on the show, I got everybody on the
show a framed picture of each of us. So I
had a picture of Lisa and I picture of Matt,
and I picture of BILLI and I and I got
them framed, had my wife help me, and I gave
them this like heartwoman gift, which I thought was nice.
And then I found billion eyes in the trash. He
threw it away, so he says it was an act.
(13:00):
I don't know, but I remember what it was like
to be in that position, like a producer. Riley does
not make any money, so we try to help her
out and give her some cash. I don't want any
like physical gifts from her. I will take food. She
likes to bake, so I will take cookies. But I
don't know. I try to explain to her, you know,
because she's coming up right. She's where I was, She's
(13:20):
where Winnie was, and she doesn't make a lot of money.
She works with the Bruins too, so she's like hustling
is to try to like get any other perks that
this has to offer. Because radio has perks to offer,
whether that be concert tickets or experiences. There are things
that we get to do which is super cool and
we're super grateful for. So that doesn't all the way
(13:41):
make up for not making the money that she should
be making. Let's be real, just like I should have
been making more money earlier, but yeah, just try to
go with the perks, and you know, we try to
help her out as much as possible. She's she's been
a godsend through all of this, you know, and that's why,
Like I see comments from people and they're like, why
didn't they get rid of producer Riley. It's like how
we say, arious now she's part time, Like they don't
(14:04):
get rid of part time people because they don't make
any money. It's the full time. And sometimes I'll talk
to people in the building that want full time and
I'm like, yeah, that's cool, it's great, you'll make more money,
you'll get a contract, maybe you'll get health insurance. But
then I kind of get a target on you're back
because when the cuts come, the cuts come. So I
don't know, but yeah, we have this weekend next week
(14:27):
and then jingle Ball and then one more week out
to jingle Ball, and then we're done and we go
on Christmas break and I cannot freaking wait. Talks about
Oh's the Mentalist. He's gonna be on the show tomorrow
calling in. I really try to get O's in, but
his show is on a Sunday night December twentieth, so
he won't be coming in. He'll be calling in, which
is cool because he can preview the show and he
(14:48):
can also talk about the Chris cost of Connection, Tom
Brady and all that. So that's tomorrow at nine ten.
I am going to the show December twentieth, and so
that should be fun. I'm going to mob deep in
Ray Kwan this Saturday night at the House of Blues.
If you're going, I'll see you there. I love me
some nineties hip hop. And then on the twenty seventh
of December, I'm going to Kill Tony at the Box Center.
(15:11):
Tony Hinchcliff, he's a comedian. He does a show called
Kill Tony where it's basically like a bunch of comedians
and you can enter. I'm not doing this, but you
can enter to do a one minute set on stage
for them, and they either they critique you and either
shit on you or they praise you, and it's just
really really funny. There's a lot of banter. So I'm
(15:32):
looking forward to that. And yeah, I mean, when you
talk about the perks of the job, right, this is
kind of a behind the scenes I mentioned the perks
with the Producer Riley. Those are some of the perks, right.
I have a relationship with the Chevalier Theater and the
wilbur and all those people, So you know, I'll reach
out and say, hey, anyway I can grab a couple
of tickets and they say yes or no. A lot
(15:52):
of times they say yes. Same thing with the Box Center,
right Ernie Box, friend of mine, reached out, he hooked
it up. Thank you Ernie for that. So that's what
we try to do with Producer Riley is you know,
try to hook her up in those ways as well.
So that's the app show for today. Tomorrow Nurse Fiona
will be on. That will be fun. She's she's she's
so sweet. She's like the nicest person ever and obviously
(16:14):
very successful, a very successful medspa. She has a great
relationship with us and every time she comes on and
people love it. She answers questions, she talks about stuff
that she's doing, and you know, I don't look at
it like it's not a commercial, right, you know, like
she's a partner at Kiss Want to Wait. She advertises
with us. I'm endorsed by her. But the podcast is
(16:34):
more of like a fun conversation on what she's doing,
and uh, you know, take your questions and stuff. So
and by the way, I'm gonna be going there with
my wife in two weeks, the two days after jingle Ball.
This is kind of cool. I came up with this
idea because, hit way, I have to come in for
a laser hair removal, but my wife wants botox. What
about a couple's like a couple's day. It's kind of
(16:56):
like a spa day, if you will. So she loved it.
So we're gonna go in a couple we we'll talk
about that tomorrow. So I'm gonna be getting laser hair
removal on my back and she's gonna be getting botox,
which is a double wind for her because she gets
the boatox, which is nice. I don't think she needs it,
but she wants it, and that's fine. I got some.
It was cool. But also I'm getting my back shaven,
(17:18):
which she has to do. So by getting the hair removed,
that's less work for her, my poor wife, and shaving
my back, so it's a double wind for her. So
that's gonna be a couple of weeks. We'll discuss it
all on the podcast tomorrow, so make sure you leave us,
leave a talkback question about anything for Nurse Fiona or
about anything that I talked about, which is like, I'm
seventeen minutes in, what did I even talk about? That's
(17:38):
the beauty of this podcast. I just turned the mic
on and I chat, so let's chat together. Leave it,
talk back, and uh yeah Nurse Fiona tomorrow. Have a
great day. Peace,
