Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, we're Roland.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
Hi.
Speaker 1 (00:00):
Everybody, justin here. It's the After Show Podcast. It's a Thursday,
October thirtieth, the day before Halloween. Thank you for listening,
For taking time out of your day to listen to
this podcast. I appreciate it so much. I don't have
a guest today, It's just me, but I'm gonna do
my best to check in, even for just a couple
of minutes, just to let you know what's going on.
Maybe play some talkbacks and check in with the After
(00:22):
Show Army and see what's going on. Yesterday's podcast with Actually,
I thought went really really good. I only asked her
for like five or ten minutes. I think we did
twenty minutes, and we could have done much longer. Actually
is a really close friend of mine. We've been through
a lot together in our radio careers, and obviously she
works right down the hall and we have kids in
the same age and stuff. So she's a real gem.
So hopefully we'll have her back on. But on Monday,
(00:45):
we're gonna have Santy, her co host on who hired
me in radio? So we're gonna tell that whole story
and his whole journey through radio has been absolutely insane,
but he's someone that I look up to. So if
you have any questions or anything for Santy, you can
leave a talkback. That'll be on Monday Tomorrow, Halloween. And
it depends on how crazy I am. I might check in.
(01:06):
I might not, But you guys can check in on
the talkbacks, which, by the way, you leave it on
the iHeart app. You can leave them anytime. If you
listen to this podcast, like at ten o'clock at night,
you can leave the talk back then just boom, hit
the button and you're in.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Hi. Justin longtime listener Michelle here. Sorry to hear you've
been catching flack and hate from some of the talkbackers.
That's not necessary. I do miss Winnie. I was wondering
if Winnie could ever be a guest on the after
show podcast.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
What do you think?
Speaker 1 (01:35):
That's a great question and one that I'm asked all
the time. My answer to that would be yeah, eventually.
I think right now it's like too soon. But we
had bes on. Now Beck's left and she went to
Philadelphia and we had her on. We've had Gandhi on,
so I mean, Gandi, you didn't get laid off. She's
in New York neither did Bes though Becks went to Philly,
but then Becks actually got laid off from Philly in
(01:57):
the cuts last year. At this time, I think once
the dust settles and plus, I mean, I don't know,
I haven't asked twenty I talked to her the other
day before she left it for Dominican Republic, and I'm
sure she'd be like, yeah, I will, but I mean,
I love you, but the company just laid me off.
Now you want me to come on and support she'd
say something like fresh like that. I know, but down
(02:17):
the line, I'm sure. I'm sure it'd be fine. She'll
probably ask for money to do so, knowing whinny, but
she is in the DR. I talked to her before
she left, and I don't know. She seems happy, she
seems okay. She's doing the social media influencing thing, which
she loves to do. I'm sure. I think she is
looking for a job and hopefully she lands somewhere good
and she'll be just fine. I've said this a million times,
(02:37):
like that girl loves money, she loves hustling, she loves
making money, and she is going to do so. And
she made it to the top. She made it to
kiss one o eight And for the people that like,
you know, give me flak, that has died down for sure.
I mean some people still they hate listen. So what
that means is two things. One they hate listen and
(02:57):
then they leave talkbacks during the show whiles listening to
the show talking shit about the show. Right, So like,
while this show is awful, remember you left Matty, you
let Winnie go, and now you have this piece of
shit show things like that, which is whatever. But the
other part of that is, this is the best part
(03:18):
is multiple of those people. That means more than one.
I don't know how many, but definitely more than one.
At least a few of the people that hate listen
and leave those talkbacks are the same people that were
complaining and doing it when Maddy left. So they were
hate listening when Maddy left because they were angry at
us over Maddie, and then now that when he's gone,
(03:39):
they're doing the same thing. So I don't know, some
people just like to complain. I don't know what it is,
you know, but for sure a lot of people have
kind of died down in either maybe some don't listen anymore,
which I understand. I mean, it sucks, but I understand
the show is different. So I don't need anybody to
leave a talk back and tell me that, because you
have to remember this. Nobody sees the talkbacks but me.
(04:02):
I choose what Billy and Lisa see. They don't have
a computer that goes to They only go to me.
So you're only complaining to me. My boss isn't gonna
see or hear it. Billy and Lisa aren't gonna hear it.
Nobody is gonna hear it but me. So I take
the brunt of it. That's why it was affecting me
so much. But to like, you know, look, I know
the show is different. Whether it's as good, worse, better, whatever,
(04:26):
I mean, it depends on who you ask. I think
we're just trying to put the best show out there,
you know, But it is sad. It's sad because we'll
do segments. I'll say the Jonah's Brothers for example, Billy
headed Jonah's Brothers story. Okay, got a talk a couple
of talkbacks saying, you know, when he would have been
great on this story, and you know what, you're right,
(04:47):
And I have that thought too on certain segments, certain
stories like maybe about waitressing, right, because when he was
a waitress, she could chime in on that and she's
not here to do so, so that is that is sad.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
You know, longtime fan and listener of you guys, it
was just a shock. I'm sure you've heard this. You
guys were in super shock. So we were in a
lot of shock as well and trying to adjust to
one of our friends being let go, but then wanting
to hear the rest of you obviously getting your groove
(05:22):
together and seeing what's next for the show. So we
love you, Hank tight. You guys are good.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yeah, that's that's the hardest part, right. I understand the
people listening that are upset. You know, you lost a friend, okay,
and then you're listening to the show and the rest
of the circle of your friends are having fun like
nothing happened. That's what it seems like. It's just the
nature of the business man, Like we do the show,
the show continues like we're all contracted employees. They didn't
come to us and say we're going to do this.
(05:50):
They just did it. And then you know, when I
was I remember said to my boss something like, you know,
is this necessary, Like we're doing just fine. I don't understand,
and they're like, yeah, it's done, like it's over. There's
no there's no like Billy Costa going like please, please please.
And then for the people that say, can Billy pay her,
that's not just not how it works, Like there's legal
things there. Billy's contracted. I'm contracted. It's just the way
(06:13):
it is, CBS. I think Morning's just had a big
layoff the other day. It sucks, man, It's just the
way of the world. So you know, we're just doing
the best we can, you know, And I'm not really
angry anymore. I was. I was a little bit angry
after the first week when they kept coming, and you know,
it was really the comments about my family and being
a dad and especially the addiction stuff that I'm just like,
(06:35):
this is so unnecessary, and I just got sick of
seeing it, and so that's why I started blocking people,
which I am sorry for.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Hey, Justin, I just listened to your shopback today. It's Wednesday,
And I also listened yesterday Tuesday with a which was
actually really amazing, and I listened to your explanation out
why we were on fallow or a block. So many
of us. I think the comment I made was more
it's corporate, aren't you guys? And I'm really bothered by
(07:03):
you blocking me, and hopefully you can change your mind.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Well, the good news is, well, first of all, I'm
sorry for blocking you, because you know, I don't want
to upset anybody. She did leave her name there and
I did unblock her. So if I blocked anybody and
you're upset by it, or you think it wasn't fair,
just DM me or well you can't d me, leave
a talk back and I will unblock you. That's fine.
(07:30):
You have to understand something that if you listened to
the show, listen to the podcast. I've talked extensively about
my past, about my addiction, about some of the stuff
that I've gone through. I've laughed about it because I
can look back at it now and I can laugh,
But at the time it wasn't funny, right, And I
went through like the depths of hell, and it was
so bad and so negative for me for so long
(07:52):
that when I got clean, I turned my life around.
That whole journey, Like I got to a place where
I only wanted positivity around me, right, Like that was
so important all the people that were close to me
are positive. They lift me up, they love me, they
don't want anything from me, and so I've kind of
built my life in that way. And I know negativity
(08:13):
is all around us anyway. But when it was so overwhelming,
the negative comments over and over again, I just thought
to myself, I don't want to see them, so I'm
just gonna block that person. Not not really out of
anger towards the person. I wasn't like, f you, but
I just didn't want to see them comment, so I
would just block them so I didn't see their comments.
That's all. You can call it childish, you can call
(08:35):
it whatever. But it was really affecting my spirit. And
one would say, don't read the comments like Billy. Billy
doesn't read anything like this. Dude is free as a bird,
you know, so he doesn't see anything. He doesn't even
like really whatever. He's not involved in any of that. Me,
I read it all because I'm a producer. I kind
of have to. I want to see what's going on,
So I'm constantly monitoring things, and so I shouldn't, but
(08:59):
I do.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
So.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yeah, I try to live in a way that's that
makes me feel good. It makes me think of I
remember when I first like got clean. Now, you gotta remember,
I came like off the street, literally like I had
been in jail. I was on the street, and so
I get clean, and that's all I knew. When you
had a conversation with me, all I talked about was,
(09:22):
you know, the detoxes, the programs, the jails, the time
that I'd done, the drugs that I did. That was
my entire identity. And so for the first several months
up to a year of getting clean, those were the
people that I associated with in the recovery community, people
that were just getting clean, that had just gotten out,
and that was the basis of my conversations. But the
(09:42):
longer that I stayed clean and I started to like
work with other people and I had like a sponsor
and I did some work on myself, I found that
I did not it didn't feel good right because I
wasn't living that way anymore. So I didn't want to
talk about being in jail because I didn't want to
go back to jail. I didn't want to talk about
using because I did not want to keep using drugs.
They were killing me. And so I remember I was
(10:04):
talking to this guy, and I was explaining it to him,
and he said, you know what, the next time you're
in a conversation with some people or whatever and they
start they start talking about that kind of you know
those things. Changed the subject to something positive and see
what happens. And so I thought to myself, Okay, I'll
try it, and so I did it. Like I was
(10:25):
outside of this recovery meeting one day and those three
or four guys standing with me, and you know, the
topic was I think it was jail maybe, and I
just out of left field, like changed the topic to
something else, like something positive about recovery, and they like
didn't acknowledge it and went right back into the negativity.
And I thought to myself, this is what he's talking about.
Like I need to like reevaluate the people that I'm
(10:48):
associating with. And so I've spent a lot of time
doing that, and now I'm happy to say I've been
clean a long time and everybody that's in my life
that's close to me and around me is like just
loves me, doesn't want anything from me, and lifts me up.
You know, when you're an active, active addiction, everybody wants
something from you. I constantly was around people that didn't
(11:09):
love me, didn't care about me, and just wanted to
take from me, and that was my choice. I put
myself in those situations. I can't even begin to describe
how many times I was around people. It was constant,
and I would have the thought, I don't even like
this person, like I don't even want to be here.
But I was, you know, chained through addiction drugs, and
you know, caught up in the lifestyle. So I don't
(11:31):
know this little spiel that I just wanted to get
out there, just some context for the people that were
blocked or whatever. It's nothing personal against you, and I
will unblock you. I'm sorry. I just was like, man,
I'm like sitting at my house reading these comments, like
all the work that I put into this show, my
entire career, Like I understand, I understand people's anger, and
I just wish that I could talk to them, like
in person, not necessarily through Instagram because I try not
(11:54):
to like write things because they can take that text
and they can put other places. Not that I would
write anything bad, but you know what I mean, But
talk to them in person, you know, and tell them
how I feel and how the show feels and that
we're all upset by it. It sucks, but you know,
there are three people still on the show. I'm still
showing up at four o'clock in the morning. I'm still
(12:15):
putting together a show every single day, putting all everything
that I have goes into this show. It's all I
think about when I'm at home, you know, not spending
time with my kids. I'm working on the show, you
know what I mean, Like, I'm always planning what's going
to be the best for the show, so you know,
to see like when he leaves, when he gets laid off,
and then people are commenting like, yo, your fucking show sucks,
(12:36):
Like I'm never listening to that station again. I'm like, okay,
that was She was one part of it, man, she
was an important part. But there's three other people here.
So if you can't get past it, that's fine. You
don't have to listen. But I guess what I'm saying
is like, give us a chance, man, because we're trying
to find our new way to like the new normal.
As I said on yesterday's podcast, So a little bit
of a tangent here, So I'm sorry. And again, if
(12:57):
I did block. You leave a talk back and give
me your Instagram name and I'll unblock you. If not.
It's all good, man, it's all good. It's all good.
But listen, have a great Halloween. I'll try to check
in tomorrow, it depends. I might try to get up
out of here. I've been coming in even earlier, like
three thirty three forty five, to just try to get
more work done. I have producer Riley helping me. But
you know, not having winning is a big deal. You know,
(13:20):
it's more work for everybody, for Riley and for me,
and I can't put it all on Riley, so I
need to help out too, So we're stepping up. You
should actually see is it behind the scenes? Producer Riley
was our phone screener. Okay, she worked in a different studio,
but now she's running the board. She took that portion
of Winnie's job. So now we don't have a phone screener.
(13:42):
The phone screener is me. So when you're listening to
the show, okay, this is really telling of like the
way of the world. When you're listening to the show,
I am talking on the air while turning my mic
off and answering the phone and then putting them on hold,
turning my mic back on. Are you joining the conversation?
Then I'm pulling talkbacks because that are coming in because
(14:05):
Riley used to help me with the phone and the talkbacks,
but she can't, So think about that. I'm hosting, answering
the phone, and doing talkbacks all while trying to be
a part of the show live on the radio. It's
absolutely insane today. Actually, I'm going to talk to the
boss and say, we need like somebody to come help
answer the phones, like it's we needed. There were so
(14:26):
many talkbacks that we couldn't get to. The phones were ringing,
and I'm like in a conversation, trying to have a
conversation with Billy and Lisa and the phones are ringing
and I can't answer them. So it was a whole thing.
So we're working here. So I can't promise the podcast tomorrow,
but definitely Monday Santy will be on. And he's great.
He's had a long career in radio. I remember when
I when I applied for the internship at JAM and
(14:48):
he replied back as Santy, it's his name, obviously, and
so I replied back to him, and then I told
a friend that I did that. I applied and I
said some guy Santy and he goes, do you know
who that is? That's Crazy Kulo And I was like,
oh my god, because I used to listen on Crazy
Coulo with Romero. That was Santi. His radio name was
Crazy Kulo. He did all the stunts on jamm and
(15:10):
so anyway, we'll cover all that on Monday. Tune in
on the after Show. Have a great day, everybody,
