Speaker 1 (00:00):
Allison came in with breaking news this morning. Yeah, there
was a police situation. I was involved in a police situation.
I'm seriously a little bit of a menace on the road.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Oh we know, I don't mean to be.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
I did get a ticket yesterday, and I had it
coming to me, like flat out had it coming to me.
But the fact that I got a ticket is not
The really dumb things are that I don't know the
streets that I live on the speed limits because I
don't carpenter packard.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I don't I should know.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
I'm up and down them all day, so I'm not
clear on what the speed limits are. And when I
got pulled over yesterday.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
The very day before I got pulled over in the
same exact spot, drove up and pulled over my car
in the same exact spot to stop for the police.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I drove by.

Speaker 5 (00:47):
He pulled over two days in a row.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Tell us yesterday you were pulled over the day before.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
I didn't get a ticket on the first time. He
was very nice, and so was the guy yesterday. And
I owned it. When he came up, I go. When
he came up to the window, I was like, I
probably should have tell you this because people don't just
automatically give themselves up. But I didn't just get pulled
over yesterday and that same exact spot.

Speaker 5 (01:07):
You know what. I think there's something endearing about that, though,
when you're willing to admit your faulty and hopeless and
they can see, you know, in the computer, someone just
pulled her over yesterday. So I think you getting ahead
of it and saying something, might you might ask for
not getting the ticket.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
So so I drive by and I'm like, in the
see he's sitting in the same exact spot. And I'm like,
I can't believe this is happening again. And I'm like,
please don't be the guy from yesterday. Please don't be
the guy, because he was so nice and he's like
the roads are bad today. He's like, just slow down.
He goes, this is not and and I thought it
was what were I thought it was forty five on packard.
It's thirty five and always has been. Oh I should

(01:47):
know that I'd lived there. So the guy, the guy
yesterday was not the same guy from the day before.
And I told him that and he laughed and he's
like and he explained why they're sitting there. There's they've
actually named that strip of packards something because of how
fast people are driving, so they're any.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Something like that.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Yeah, So he was really nice and I knew when
he because the guy from the day before, he just
came up to my window and talked to me, and
he was like, all right, he goes, we'll just watch
your speed. So the other guy got in his car,
which I knew what that meant. I mean, he got
in his car for a while, like he's preparing the ticket.
So he came back and we had a really nice exchange.
Like I said, I got that coming. I said, I

(02:27):
promised this time, it's committed to memory for real this time.
And then I told him, I said, I was just
really glad that you weren't the guy from yesterday because
I would have felt so bad that I let him down.
And he's like, I'll let him know, but I don't
want him to know.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
I want him to think I learned my lesson yesterday.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
He's like, okay, so just a refresher thirty five on
packard the person who's lived in nipseasons.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
So what's the word now, you'll go in.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
So he gave me a ticket for one to five over,
which I've never gotten one mile to five.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I've gotten five miles over.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
I just called number and find out what the ticket is,
and he said, if.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
You ever gotten a ticket before?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
And I'm like, yeah, a couple of times on the
express or not. I don't think so, and I and
I'd like to think it's not as much as the
expressway ticket, but I don't know, because those are like
one seventy five?

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Are you going to fight it?

Speaker 3 (03:15):
No?

Speaker 2 (03:15):
I had it coming to me.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
I owned it and accepted it right off the bat.
But I did notice something my last four police interactions,
and this could be the same for city police. My
last four police interactions were with state police, and they're.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
All very attractive. Oh should I maybe.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Men and one lady all pulled me over within this year?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Should I maybe bring a breakfast? I was going to
be the police department and have a hot breakfast on
the scene. Wait, I mightn't want a ticket.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Come visit me.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
I'll tell you right on packered Where where does?

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah? All right? Yeah, look at I mean it could
be a win win here for everybody.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Hey, you're a sheriff, can you get me in with
I am no.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
No, don't say that that is not true.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
That's kind of true.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
I'm on the Advice Story Committee. I am not a sheriff.
He's a deputy. Chelsea, not a deputy.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
