If you all don't know it, I'm doing my second
Simmons College High School game day. We're located at Odham
County High School, just straight past my house, and I'm
so upset. I'm gonna be honest with you, Anthony. I
thought Ballard High School. I thought we were the one.
I thought, nicest floor, nicest gym, great stage. I come

out to Oldham kind of. This is my first time
ever in their gymnasium.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
We're in the same boat. It's embarrassing. Jeffson County School
sinceem has.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
To do better, bald hasn't got an upgrade ball High
School to the entire facility except for the court. And
we got that ten years ago. We got we got
that the summer right before I came in twenty fifteen
is the last time we got an update there.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
But look at this gymnasy manthon he two decks. It
reminds me of Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
You know, it reminds me of in North Carolina, Dudley High.

School, Deadly Highchool, just like Dumb High School.

I mean, it's just amazing what all these other periphial
schools have and the Jeffson County school systems left out.

Well, we get the best players, we can't have the
best gym.

But what we have, guys, We've got a great show

in the principal. We've got Coach Hooks, the women's basketball coach.
Everyone knows that Coach Renner is supposed to be here.
Everyone and we know the coach Renter he ducked out
on me, which we are going to fight. But we've
got the women's coach in place, Coach Hooks sitting in

You know Coach Renner told me that this is too early.
He said, Jim, I haven't seen seven am.

I know he's I'm gonna wear him out. He should
be having five am practices. His team struggling a little bit.
He's gotta crack the whip. Yeah, I mean I think
they're starting to play a little bit better. But yeah,
I mean we don't start school till nine am.

Oh, yes, that's why he is here. I wish that's
why Mark Snyder where the practices. The guy should be practicing.
We're off to a tough start. We should be doing
two a daze every day. People do not know the
gentleman that beat Male high school, that played with me
at ballat high school's assistant coach here, that's Mark Snyder.
So you know, we didn't want Hiven to put it

Jeff Lapping myself. Trinity didn't have good Darryl Griffin and
Bobby Turner. They had Raymonds Bond.

In school at the time.

At the time, Raymond couldn't play dead the cowboy, but
he would have started on about team.

He'd have been eighth man.

Well see look he did all your he he did
on a heavy lifting because somebody over here couldn't shoot.

I couldn't, but I could get the ball up the
floor against the pressure. We would have played his own
on you school. I could guard Darryl, but that man
right there could shoot. That likes how coach shooks.

But we appreciate you all having us in. We have
a lot of fun.

We're gonna talk about your program, of course, but I
just wanted to know before we bring doctor Brown on
the principle here you were telling me about a new gymnasium.
I was amazed by this gymnasium. So I want you
to tell all the Louisville listeners. We're an Oldham County guys.
We're ten miles from my home, fourteen miles from the
Sutherlands US.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Forty two and River Road. It's fourteen miles.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
We're on another planet also, But tell everybody what's going
on with this new gymnasium you all have here.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
So adjacent to our current gym. We're knocking down our
alternative school, our old girls gym that a lot of
people played in. We're selling the floor of it like
that's how sor it is to a lot of people here.

Uh.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
And they're building a new fifty five hundred seat gym
right next door, have a center hung scoreboard, have an
humongous entryway. There's rumors of a park style floyd that
they're very excited about.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
That's rumors.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
I don't hear about your bark. I played in the
old garden. I know about the old park ca. I
played in the old garden.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
But that's not a conversation I was in. That's yeah.
But it's gonna be a huge facility, I think, attached
weight room, so very exciting stuff, you know, college style
film room for us and the boys to share, big
new locker rooms. You know, we're we're looking forward to
hosting new opportunities in there. And the idea of building
it so big here on our main campus is that

all three high schools can use it for graduation because
right now we go into Louisville and we eat after
all the j CPS schools and so.

As you're in Odham County.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
But so graduation is tough. You know, you're doing it
weird times on a Sunday.

Speaker 5 (04:56):
And we gotta go pay to the park and everything.

Speaker 2 (04:59):

you know, I don't want to look over the current
players we have. We've got a lot of young talent
already in high school. But our eighth grade class, they
actually just had a phone call from Kyra Elsey. They
went fifty four. It's in the paper, so somebody up
in fact, Jimmy, but they went fifty four to OHO
through their middle school career.

So they're really excited.

Young talented group we have coming up excellent, and so
we're hoping that they combined with what we already have here,
and we can we can just go back.

To we've got Haley Woods. Sit. Do you know if

Senior Haleywood here is senior Haley outstanding, outstanding senior year.
I think she's averaging just hair under fourteen points a game.

She told me you were holding her back. She says
she's the next Scitland Clark, but you won't turn her loose.
Sounds about right, That's what I heard, coach. Man, Coach,
you have to understand.

This is my second year at Oldham County. I was
Henry County for seven years prior to this.

Another big gym, Another big gym. I've been to Henry
County though, that I do know. Well, Coach, I appreciate
it what we've got. We're it's seven twelve and I've
got to get some things done. So I'm gonna have

They won that game sixty five to forty four.

record and the woman's records. See, yall are both five
and six oh six and five. See they mess it up.

The funny thing, we didn't play. I don't think we
played one school from the eighth region ever. Yeah, no,
well he's not my senior. The didn't want to come
in to Jefson County School in fear factor, Anthony. This
everyone knows. I hate that.

But online, when you come in these high schools, they
will not stay up. Yes, So what we're gonna do
is we're going to go to break. We have the
principle of Oldham County on the line. We're not gonna
make her weight. So let's get my first bill pay in.

doctor Brown, you're tearing down the gym that I thought

trying to stay on task. I'm at Oldham County High School,
right next to Oldham County Country Club, where I have
played a few rounds of golf. I'm gonna be honest
with everyone. And we just had the women's basketball coach on,
Jim Hooks, who told us about the new gymnasium.

But we have the balls, the one and only.

I wanted to open up with her, but I know
she just went through I think a surgery. So doctor Brown, Princeville,

How are you?

Speaker 9 (10:35):
I'm great? Thank you thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Oh no, I appreciate thank you all for having us
at your high school. It's unbelievable, Doctor Brown. I walked
into a gym saying, oh, how nice would this have
been to play in and your women's coach tells me,
coach hooks, we're tearing this junk down.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
This is a disaster.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
I'm like, what, it's nice. So tell me what's going
on at your high school? How long have you been
here and what's.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Going on new?

Speaker 9 (11:00):
Well, we've got a lot going on actually, So this
is my third year at OC, and I like you completely,
I love it. I am I'm somebody. I grew up
in Louisville. I went to Mail and so I went
to that old Mail downtown for two years without right,
well yeah, kind of sye, but so like up with you.

(11:23):
When I saw the gym at OC, it reminded me
of that that kind of wrap around that old I mean,
it's it is. It's one of a it's not like
a gym that you have nowadays. But the problem is,
as with things at age sometimes I believe in the
winter when they would would try to work out in
the gym, but there's some kind of water that would
come up and you could basically ice gate. Just wouldn't

say for our athletes, just you know, lots of things.
Because we're really excited about the new gym that we're
going to get. Hopefully the next year or two and a.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Year or two. That would be really nice. I can't
wait to see that.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
They were telling me that you would hold some of
your graduations there for all the Odham County schools. This
I've lived in Prospect, doctor Brown since sixty nine, and
I've got you don't know him that well, but I
got my man Mark Snyder right next to me.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
He's coach Renter's assistant. We were at Ballord.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Together, but I moved out to Prospect in nineteen sixty
nine and I used to drive up here on our
way to Frankfurt to see my dad's sister.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Oldham County has exploded. It's just unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Community, community, neighborhood after neighborhood all the way out to
you all. I mean, the growth here is unreal. What
brought you to Oldham County. You've told me you've been
here three years. What brought you here other than the job?

Speaker 9 (12:34):
Uh? Well, I live here actually, I live in Crestwood,
So this is Oldham County is my community. And it
was important for me to serve the kids in the
district where I lived, and I was thrilled. I have
been so fortunate. I mean, I feel like I just
got in at the right time too. There's been so many,
so many like great new things are the superintendent of

(12:55):
district leadership and then our elected board of education. They
have really taken on this task of upgrading all the
facilities at all the schools. Of course there's one that
I care about the most, obviously, but all of us
have gotten lots of good upgrades and it matters to
the kids, you know, like our football stadium that was
that turf now is beautiful, and there's just it just

(13:18):
elevates the whole thing, you know. I'm just I'm somebody
that values what sports brings to the table. Anyway, our
new soccer field and we just a lot of new
things happening for our kids to kind of keep them
excited about staying out here for school.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Academically, what are you would you tell me if I said,
if you were telling someone and you were selling the
school's academic piece.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
What would you tell them?

Speaker 6 (13:42):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (13:42):
Man, that's a great I mean.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
My favorite teacher, honestly was a drafting teacher. And I
just that's the only thing that I had any interest
at all when I was at Valid high school other
than playing with Mark Sneider and playing on the basketball team,
was drafting you remember Jim Piercemark, Oh yeah, oh yeah,
you remember Jim. I mean, they would truly have to
come and get me out of mister Pearce's class. If
I ask you who is the teacher, and I'm putting

you on the spot, give me two or three that
people should know that are here, that are doing a
fantastic job.

Speaker 9 (14:12):
All right, can I can do that, But first I
need you to hear me say that Oldham County High
School will be a top five school in the state
of Kentucky. And I mean in every single aspect academically
number one. We are doing some amazing things in our
school in terms of supporting our kids. We have kids
who are at the top. We've got some kids who

(14:33):
need some extra help with reading and math. We've got
kids in every single, every single part of the spectrum.
And so one thing that I'm the most proud of
in my school is that we have a moral imperative.
We don't want our kids to leave us without being
ready for life. And we love that. We have great
pest scores and they're going to keep getting better and
we're all about it. But we also love that we're

helping our kids learn how to make sure that they
know how to go out in life and buy a car,
buy a house, sign a lease, make sure without being
making sure that they are fully informed of what they're doing.
So I've got a group of teachers right now who
have figured out all about how to teach older kids
how to read. If maybe they they missed out on

something they did, there's a couple of skills there they're lacking.
These teachers have dug in and gotten so much training
and help and that's missed. There's a bunch of them.
I'm not gonna name them all because I don't want
somebody right now. Our teachers are Their hearts are like
nothing else. I don't even I can't believe they let
me show up here every single day, Like I'm so

fortunate and blessed to work with people who care about
kids as much as my teachers do.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
That's an excellent job to have, doctor Brown, it is.
Before I let you go, I want to ask you
where did you go to college? Where did you get
your degree?

Speaker 10 (15:50):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (15:50):
Well, I got a lot of degrees. I went to
my bachelor's degrees from Eastern Kentucky university, and then I've
got two degrees from bell Men and one from there.

I just wanted to make sure because I'm getting ready
to bring on a guy. George Williams said, he's a
Kentucky guy. No Kentucky degrees. I just want people to
know exactly University of Love of Bellaman Knights and Eastern
Kentucky Colonels. Well, doctor Brown, I appreciate you allowing us
into your gymnasium and into your school.

you could shoot Mark my son, you Mark and I.

He's the gentleman that set up in the gym with
Martin and I and Kerry watching your games. This is
Snyder was at all your games. I know you could
shoot right Mark, you didn't want to. You could shoot
a little bit, but this one was a marksman right here.

Come on, I was off the dribble too.

You don't take that away.

We couldn't do that back in the day. They didn't
let you shoot off the dribble. We got pulled out
of the gate. It was just a different game.

I had a little bit of versatility, lit up, step backs,
mid range, floater, volleyball line three.

I don't want to pull statistics up, but you remember
what my statistic was. Junior year of high school.

I led the country in three point percentage. I didn't
shot fifty five percent from the three line entire season.

Yeah, your junior year, you get you. It's not a

Did he ever go eleven for twelve?

I did Jeral Bobby Turner junior year, junior year at
Northeast High School.

First game of the season, Mayer, coach Hunter. I had
twelve at that game.

I had twelve days in a row.

I heard everybody call we.

Were almost had fifty first game of season.

I got a couple of statistics under the sleeves.

Some of them are just not not in the state
of Kentake. If it would have been Kentucky.

Oh no, you would have been at U of L.

I probably wouldn't have.

So anyway, guys, we're at seven twenty six and I
know you're gonna have to run. My man, George Williams

So Coach rennerd ducks out on us, as we both
know we're going to strangle right coach, and I wanted
to ask Principal Brown, it was so cool to get
coach Render to come out of retirement to come and
start the program back. So what's going on Mark with

Oldham County Amen's program.

Speaker 11 (18:13):
Well, it's it's an exciting time at Oldham County. We
got a bunch of really young kids coming up. We
have we start an eighth grader, which is to me,
it's unheard of. I don't remember any eighth graders starting
when me and you played back in the day.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
That's true, Don Jackson.

Speaker 11 (18:32):
Yeah, maybe we have a lot of young kids and
we've had a lot of injuries this year, which is
really really we haven't played up to our potential yet
because we haven't been healthy. We've had a kid break
his foot, we had a season injury and yeah, he's
Henry is down there and had another kid, Uh have

(18:53):
a bad knee injury and we lost him for the season,
and he was probably arguably our best player. Okay, We've
just a lot of turned ankles and.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Those things happen when you when you're starting a new program,
a new coach comes in, everything happens.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
Mark, that's truly how it goes.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Everything goes wrong, but I'm sure with you and coach Renter,
it'll be fine.

Well, we got a we got a really good staff.
We got some young guys that they're excited about coaching
and excellent there, come to the gym every day, willing
to work hard. And we're making progress.

So you're gonna get the seventh and eight program together.

Like when Donny's Harre used to pull us from spot
to spot trying to learn the shuffle cut, yeah, the
old shuffle cut.

Yeah, and we've almost got to the point where we're
running shovel and motions.

It takes time, but it takes time. But no, market's
great seeing you worked.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
I asked to make sure that you were here, but
you Broughte, somebody with you. Oh yeah, I can't believe
that Terry Gates walked in this gym with you. When
he was at Ballad he couldn't play Ghost of Stats
and couldn't play Goest of Virginia almost wins a ring
and never could play.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
But you know what Donnie Saider told me, this is
a true story.

Speaker 1 (20:05):
He said, Terry Gates could never play, but whoever he
guarded couldn't play either.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
He would make sure he could make sure he couldn't play.

It didn't matter whether it was Worthy or gene Back.

It didn't make any different exactly.

We're talking about James Worthy, Gene Banks, that guy to
the right of you, Anthony.

If he guards you, you were just gonna be glad
the game was over.

He would foul out, Anthony, he would draw four charges
on you, he'd have three blocking calls. He'd poke you
in the eyes. But I can't believe Terry Gates the banker, walked.

Yeah, he's in town for the Virginia game this week.

They're awful, Terry Gates.

Virginia is so bad they shouldn't even show up. That
program is done. I'd be ashamed to say I went
to Virginia. Now I gotta call Lee and Jeffer and say,
what happened to your program? Because their god all they
are Anthony. Virginia so bad, so bad. Hold you threw

It's kind of how the culture's built. Those guys come
to games when they're really young and they end up
playing for Oldham County. So it's a big deal for

Student body president is really preparing me in the leadership role.
And I feel people rely on me a lot through
this school and whether it's teachers or students, and you know,
that keeps me accountable to do my job and help
them just get stuff done.

I think that we talk about athletes a lot, but
we need to know about the educational side and how

So I actually was a transfer from South oh and

and then took over to school here in Oldham County.

I mean I had wanted to come to us for
a while, But truthfully, it's just such a good environment,
such good people. And when I finally got the opportunity
to transfer, like I just was a totally different person,
much more like open about trying new things. I never
thought I'd go out for a student body or anything
like that. So it really hasn't been a gift, and
just such a great opportunity to be here is so wonderful.
