Speaker 1 (00:02):
You have to love the laugh.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Welcome back to EVE Sports Radio, March the twenty sixth,
twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
I don't know if it's a beautiful day outside or not.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
I haven't been outside and it's dark, so we'll have
to wait and see. But we're up, so that makes
it a beautiful day. We've got a chance, no matter what.
Now to the business. The phone number's five zero two
five seven one seventy nine hundred. That's five zero two,
five seven one seventy nine hundred. I got some questions
for our listeners today. Some days like yesterday, I don't

(00:34):
want very many callers. But today I need some input
and I want some input and I'm going to I
got some controversial things that we're going to talk about,
some of the state tournament, some with coach John Caliperry
speaking about things. So we got a lot of things
to discuss. And of course we've got to talk about
Naysmith Men's Coach of the Year. The four people that

(00:54):
are in the running. Do we believe there should be
other coaches in the running. So we got a lot
of things to get but first let's bring all the
young gun.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Anthony. Welcome to the show. How are you.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
I'm doing great this morning, a little nippy outside, but
hope we Today is a good day. But we do
have We've got a lot of control fledicial things on
the table today. It's been a it's been a while,
two weeks of sports all the way from you know,
trade rumors and i LS coaches new deals. It's it's
a I don't want to say it's a roller coaster
ride because it's been going up right now, it hasn't

(01:29):
been going down.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
So this.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Taking off. We're on a long flight right.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Now, run a long flight, and I know and this
is seven ninety at kr D. I'm gonna tell you
one thing, No you know what anthy I'm just trying
to tell you my phone Deans and I can't help
but look at it. I should turn it upside down
and I get and I don't know how he knew,

(01:56):
but John Carney hit me with go Tight, which everyone
knows that same Xavier if you all did not know
the Tigers that he's described. Me and John, we're gonna
talk a little bit about Jaytown and Formidable Fold.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Could be an interesting game. John.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
You know I'm pulling for jay Town. I love coach Klin.
But you know I'm pulling against.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
You, John.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
I can't help it anyway. But Anthony, you're gonna do that.
I'm not gonna jump the gun on that now, Anthony.
One thing I do want. We've heard so much wine,
and we're gonna talk about the wine. And I mean,
I've heard so much whining in between oh seeding and
coach of the Years and name eagine.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Likeness is running the game.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
And I've heard all the wining got me and everyone
knows you've never heard me see a word about players
getting paid. It's time overdue. I'm sorry, but let's just
stick to the facts. I stay with the facts. A
lot of people have opinions, but we try to stay
with the facts. This is one thing I just want
to throw out there early on. That Kentucky Illinois game

(03:02):
was the most watched college basketball game, guys in years.
I'm talking about twenty years, and one of the largest ever.
So before we say that naming and likeness is ruining
the game, it's not running. When you say eyeballs watching.
People are watching this year's Final Four. They were watching

(03:24):
the Kentucky game, the Florida game against yukon the Duke
game against Baylor this weekend, huge ten point one million viewers.
Come on, guys, all I'm saying, is we say it's
ruining the game?

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
We've had great game, buzzer beaters at Maryland, We've had
great games. I mean, is it? You know we're always whining.
Everybody's whining. That's why I want calls. I need people
to stop whining. But that right there lets me know.
It's not like the NBA.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
I know the NBA is getting another ten percent pay bump. Yes,
I wanted to Na to come to Louisville because of
the financial benefits, no question. I don't care what anybody says.
But college basketball is on a uptick. So all the whining,
God Lee and I've heard it forever. Maybe we need
to stop. So I want some people to help me
out with all this whining going on. So anyway, we're

(04:19):
gonna throw it to you first. I want you to
give us. It's so much going on in the NFL.
Things are popping off, the NBA and high school, this
men's state tournament, So give us the national news and.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah, we got tons of stuff going on. Obviously, if
we're stepping out of our spectrum from normal. We haven't
talked about this in a while, obviously, probably since I
have to say to the Super Bowl. We haven't talked
about the NFL as much except for a couple of
few trades that we had going on, couple of rumors
of people going different places. Bobviously we do know for
a lot of people that got those updates. So Russell
Wilson is going to the New York Giants, James Winston

(04:54):
is a backup, and then also Stefan Diggs did sign
a three year, one hundred and five million dollars deal
with the Page. Now the reason why we're throwing this
out for Russell Wilson going to the Giant Race, that
throws in a lot of rumors of where Shador Sanders
is supposed.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
To go in the draft.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Ill for those who do know, he is the son
Deon Sanders, the coach at the Colorado Buffalo's. He is
one of the top prospects quarterbacks coming out of the
draft this year outside of cam Woard. Cam Ward is
honestly surprising me the number one pick this year, and
the reason why he surprised me more than cam Ward
is the number one pick not that that's because of
the skill, is because of his age. Now, usually when

(05:30):
your quarterbacks get that old to the age you've been
in you know, you've been.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
In college for five years.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
For football players, it drops your draft stock. It just does.
There's a higher injury rate, you know, it's it's usually
the thing for people like younger guys to be able
to build them and get a little more experienced before
they start hitting their prime age. So for him to
be at the number one pick is very surprising to me.
But I think it's the first round or of course
easily a top ten to fifteen pick. But the first

(05:54):
pick did surprise me a little bit. But he did
take Miami to places that they haven't been honestly, probably
since Ed Reid. So I'll give him credit for what
he did at University of Miami. He changed their program
in the matter of a season. But lots of stuff
going on, obviously with our straight tournament going on, it's
kicking off the day and I'm excited. You know, I

(06:16):
don't get to watch him in person. I wish I
would because I do like Washington State tournament games.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
I used to.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
I like Washington even when we went we watched the
other teams play beforehand, but obviously everyone knows that big
matchup is going in there, and they said the Cage
Tigers are about to be after there. Tigers taking on
Jay Town at one thirty to day. I don't know
where I can watch them that, but I'm gonna I'm

(06:42):
GOOGLINGU to look and see if I can watch this
game on my phone because I got I gotta at
least see one half true.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Richard Duncan head coaching Jay Town, Anthony, there's a lot
of things going on. Everyone knows that Adam would call
in speaking about a young man that transferred.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Back to.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
It was in today's paper. I gave it to you.
What's that young man's name again, Anthony.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Yes, Parry McDaniels is the one that transferred back to
Jay Town. Obviously he's spent some time at Huntington Prett,
but he is undoubtedly their best player. He's lived the
Chargers to one of their best seasons honestly, probably in
a long time. Even when I was in high school
in twenty fifteen, Jay Town was definitely going through a
slump at the time. And you know, I had a

(07:26):
couple of buddies that paid for jay Town that did
have talents, but I think he has been their best
talent that they've probably had in the last ten years
when it comes to skills, potential and ceiling wise. Now
he does have his hands full against against the Xavier.
Saint David does have Jeremi Jackson, who obviously we've seen
play a couple of times. He's probably their best t
best player without a doubt. I think that'll be probably

(07:48):
the biggest matchup of the night. I haven't seen enough
of jay Town. That's the only thing I can't tell them.
I can't stay with their X factors. I will say
sing Zavier's X factor isn't one player, but it is
how they rebound the ball and they defend. That is
their X factor. When jay Town is known for getting
doing well and rebound the ball. The only games that

(08:09):
they didn't do so well against it, surprisingly was the
Ballad games, except for the Ballid game in the state tournament.
Balladers kind of rolled over on this and then got
beat by forty. I was I was a little pissed off.
I'm gonna be honest.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
In the region you're gonna go out, yes, yeah, in.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
The regions you're gonna go out in the region like that,
at least put up a fight. Don't lose by forty alone.
I'm a Bruin. I gotta say something because that Bruins
roll over like that coach will. You're gonna bounce back.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yet here for a second year disappointment his first year.
This year was a much improvement. Here's the deal, though,
Anthony the newspaper, not Jerry's or Anthony's, have rated the
state championship teams one to sixteen. Go find that again, Anthony.
The top five that the newspaper believes has a chance

(09:02):
to win this year's Stay Tournament. I know Sating Xavier
was one. It was Great Crossing two. I think it's
on the third.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Time they have Yep, they do. So they got the
rankings in here all the way from one all the
way up to thirteen right now, and they obviously go
all the way out to eighteen. But they do have
Saint Zaber in that one spot. It's in at thirty
one and two, Great Crossing a second at thirty one
and four. Record, then we got Callaway County at thirty
one and three, and then in our fourth spot we

(09:30):
do have Cooper who is twenty three and five. A
lot of the other schools a little bit farther out. Now,
South Oldham is in that seventh spot at twenty nine
and five, south of them to have green season, and
jay Town sitting right on that cust line at the
ten spots, sitting that twenty six and six. So we
do have three teams within i'd say the Jefferson Region.
Obviously Olden Counties in Olden County, but they're so close

(09:50):
to you know, downtown, They're only twenty five thirty minutes
you might as well just consider that Louisville anyways, So
you got three teams in the in the Louisville area
to have a strong chance of trying to in the
state tournament. The only thing, obviously we talked about a
million times, is how our three Louisville teams too, I'm
play in the first round. So it takes is pretty
much automatically down to two always in the first round,

(10:11):
which is still you know always, Yes, that's all. The
seventh Region, sixth and eighth region played each other's nothing
that is. I don't know why they schedule us in
the first round of the tournament.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Andy, there's always a reason, trusts me. Just follow the
money and you'll find out. Now here's the deal, Anthony,
because I've got a clip from coach Caliperry and Swaggy Cow.
I was taking his team to six sweet sixteen, which
I'm happy for. All the teams have played phenomenally in
this NCAA tournament.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
But great, thank you, Shennon.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
But I want to play a clip, but I'm it's
already seven to seventeen. I'm gonna go to break. I
want people to understand when we come back. There's an
issue in the paper today. Coach Richard Duncan was speaking
about it from jay Town that everyone was upset because
he had a lot of transfer players. Okay, and I
think of his top eight, maybe five of them are

(11:07):
transferst But the young man that everyone that Adam was
speaking about had played at Jaytown for three years. I
want people to understand that their best player did play
at Jaytown for three years. He transferred out this year
and came back.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Now I know the circumstance because I read the paper.
I didn't when Adam was describing it to me. But
there are other players, most of them have come from
other six region teams.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Okay, but guys I just want to be legitimate with you.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
I'm going to take you back to my ballad days
all the way to today to let people understand this
is not completely new. It's really not completely new. We
just wanted to turn a blind eye to it. So
when we come back, we're gonna speak a little bit
more about Jaytown, what's transpired with their roster played in St.

(11:55):
Xavier today in the first round of the state tournament,
and what has been going on for quite a long time.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
Because I'm going to take.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Some of this off of coach Duncan's shoulders to let
them know, guys, this isn't new.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Eve Sports Radio. I got Anthony. I want your opinion.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Phone numbers five zero two, five seventy nine hundred.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
We'll talk to you all after the break.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Welcome back to EVE Sports Radio seven twenty one. It's
time to start scurrying. If you have to be able
to work at eight, be safe. I got Anthony E's
on the other line. This is EVE Sports Radio. We
were speaking about the state tournament and the movement of players,
and we understand the movement of players with college basketball.
The name Amgs and Likeness, which opened up on March

(12:39):
the twenty fourth. That's why I told you I've heard
more whining from the talking heads about when it opens
up and how the NCAA has done things. And I
just want people to know the NCAA has taken it
from a forty five day period to a thirty day window,
so they are making adjustments to this thing. It's just
the wild wild West. Things happen overnight. It just takes time.

(13:02):
But as for ruining the game, the Kentucky Illinois game,
I guarantee you CBS and TNT and True Television and
all the people that are carrying the games, they don't
mind paying for it because people are watching. It's not
ruining the game. So, Anthony, we were discussing Jay Town

(13:22):
and Richard Duncan was taking a little heat.

Speaker 1 (13:25):
He said he had heard the.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Criticism about his roster being filled with a lot of
six region teams like he had been recruiting. Okay, guys,
and let's just be fair and honest with this. Recruiting
has been going on for a long long time. Yes,
my ballad situation was very unusual because we truly did

(13:46):
have three very high rated high school players that grew
up in the area. Lee Raker which grew up in
Hunting Creek, Jerry Eves, who nineteen sixty eight moved right
after the Harris Creek Bridge, both in Prospect, and Jeff
Lamp who lived down the street from Ballart. Okay, I

(14:08):
think it's more I forgot the day of the neighborhood.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
But anyway, straight down the street. Okay, there were three
of us.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Jeff went to Cameron Lee and I went to Ballart
from seventh grade on. Jeff Lamp went to Cameron for
seventh and eighth and came to Ballart in the ninth.
But we all grew up in the district. Okay, that's
first part. Second part, bussing happened, which brought us. Curtis Jeffries,

(14:37):
the starting point guard, went to American University, is still
one of the leading scores at American University. And he's
not junior bridgmand, but he's very close. He has been
building kitchens for Marriott Corp. In prisons all throughout the
United States for over twenty five years now.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
He's done very well for himself.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
So name's Curtis Jeffers and then the late great Norman Miller.
Norman did not come through bussing that was our six
to eighth center. He did move into the Ballard district,
and at the time, people got a lot of flack
at Ballard saying that they helped the Millers move into
the Ballard district. So I just wanted you all to know,

(15:15):
this is the seventies and people were questioning Richard Smith
and I desire about Norman Miller. Okay, seventies. The other
four were legitimate bussing broad Curtis period, he had no choice,
and the other three of us we lived in the
area now Jay Town. Maybe some recruiting going on there

(15:36):
may be, but guy, it's this recruiting going on everywhere.
Saint Xavier Trinity. You know, y'all heard me say the
dark side for a long time. I told you all
that in Greensboro, North Carolina, the private schools in the
public they only would play in a Christmas tournament, but
they had different tournaments to play in Anthony. You know

(15:58):
that to be a fact. They'd only play in the
Greensboro tournament during Christmas. They let everyone play. All the
schools that wanted to enter or were good enough could enter.
It was a great tournament, and I mean it was
a massive sellout, but for the state tournament. They did
not let private and public play, not in Greensboro, not
in the state of North Carolina.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
So people do it differently.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
That's why I hate to see this criticism on Jaytown.
The gentleman Adam has caught my show numerous times and
he has spoke about the young man. I had no
idea how where the young man came from, where he
had played, where he had gone. But when I read
the paper today, he had been at Jaytown his first
three years, transferred out to a prep school, which I'm

(16:40):
so glad he transferred back. Anthony, I really am, because
everyone is just given us so much flak about you know,
transfers and name eagine likeness and the portal and all
the things that people don't like. So I want you
all to listen to Coach cali Peri speaking about it
and what's going on, which I think is it a

(17:01):
detriment to high school players. I agree with Coach Caliperry
and I want you ought to hear it, So Shannon
please play it for me.

Speaker 5 (17:08):
On that note, talking about recruiting and everything, we're having
Derek Queen join us here in like fifteen minutes.

Speaker 6 (17:14):
Good unbelievable believe. So he's always been good. Okay, he's
past Yeah, he's like that guard skills.

Speaker 5 (17:21):
Okay, so let's talk about that. We saw his high
school team done in mont Verte, and I don't know
enough about high school basketball, is what I'm learning him
mcwhite guy from Yukon, and Cooper Flag we're all in
the same high school academy team.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
Is that how it works?

Speaker 5 (17:34):
These academies are kind of.

Speaker 6 (17:35):
Recruiting some, but it's starting to move out because you
know why in IL in high school?

Speaker 5 (17:44):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 6 (17:46):
So you're getting six guys at one school right now.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
God. So now if your.

Speaker 6 (17:53):
High school prep school is not able to help them
with NIL, you're probably not going to get as many kids.
So I think that will kind of the same that,
like I said, with us and I used to recruit six,
seven eight freshmen, can't do it. Most you can get
now or three to four.

Speaker 5 (18:12):
Well, hopefully, you know, college basketball only continues to get
better and better because of all this. The NFL I
think is getting I'm sorry, college football, I think is
getting better because of transfer portal in NIL. Do you
think same thing for college troops or not? Because you
didn't even have.

Speaker 6 (18:26):
A team line saying, I said, I was really disappointed
in and it's happened. There are kids in the United
States that are freshmen that deserves scholarships to college that
are not. There're seven eight hundred will not get scholarships,
and they're good enough, but we're all waiting for transfers.

(18:47):
So now that is what disappoints me the most and
part of the reason I won't change. I just can't
do as many. You know, there are kids. I had
a friend of mine called my son's Division one player.
He doesn't even have the offer because everybody's waiting for
this trance. How many of my guys are coming back?

(19:07):
How many transfers can I get? I may only have
one or two scholarships.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
So, guys see, there's a lot going on. The shifting
sands of college anthony affects the shifting sands of high
school and coach Paltte Caliperry. We all understand that he
has been critiqued over and over again about his one
and dons, but at least he was doing with high
school kids. And I've said forever that more mature people
should beat high school.

Speaker 1 (19:35):
Kids, and they have.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
So now we look at the Auburns, one of the
oldest teams in the NCAA. We saw that University Louis
was fifth oldest, Kentucky has seventh oldest. People are doing
it differently now, they have to, but it is truly
affecting high school players. If you're not Cooper Flagg player
of the year, Anthony, your guy or queen who they're
speaking about, the young man that traveled in the game

(20:01):
over the weekend and made the.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
Shot at the buzzer. Now you're having a hard time
being recruited.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
So, Anthony, do you believe that high school kids are
getting a fair shot now at the next level.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
No, we all know they're not getting a fair shot
right now. It's just when you have so many teams,
there's only so many scholarships to go around, and when
you know, there's not a lot of people really graduating
from college right now in the last you know, probably
two to three years span because people are getting extra eligibility.
JUCO players are getting extra years now. So it's prep schools,

(20:34):
COVID years running out of scholarships. They're saving all their
scholarships for JUCO and a transfer portal. High school kids
if they're not within that top one hundreds, a lot
of them don't really have guaranteed spots unless they're the
lower the mid major schools. And even it's funny why
I listened to a post this morning. It's actually the
Norfolk State head coach, and he was talking about how

(20:54):
mid majors and lower Division one schools are just scored
five jucos now, he said. They said he always gave
juco coaches a lot of credit because he said they
have to restart their teams every one to two years,
because that's how long junior college is. It's just two
years max, which is true. You co coaches do have
to restart over and over and over again a lot
more consistently than they did in for your programs. But
that's not the case anymore. Now. Mid majors and low

(21:18):
leven Division one schools are just glorified jicco's because they
have to go find new players every year. And they said,
most of the people that are going to these mid
major schools or lower level Division one schools, maybe a
couple of schools maybe in the MIAG, you know, some
of those even schools like that, which is perfectly fine.
They're grabbing them players that yes, there one of players

(21:38):
that just want an opportunity to play at that level
and prove that they belong there and show their talents.
The ones that do go and they start to evolve
in form talent and getting real skill, they're gone after
a year or two because other schools want them. There's
more nil money on the table, and there's more opportunity
to keep growing. Nobody wants to ever cap themselves out.
You don't want to go to work at a job
and never try to get a promotion. Well, these players

(22:00):
feel the same way when it goes to in basketball.
Everybody wants that promotion. Everybody wants to make more money.
Everybody wants to feel more important. So when they go
to these Bellermans or they go to these Norfolk States
and they average seventeen to eighteen points a game, you
know after that season they're gone. Regardless if you won
your conference tournament or anything like that. That just helps
boot just boost their morale if they do win. He

(22:21):
gives them more accoletes than the belt to go to
the school way.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Here's what I tell people. I agree with that. So
here's the deal for the Bellmans. The Norfolk States. They
have the ability to recruit better freshmen now, Anthony, because.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
People aren't taking them. So, guys, I want you to understand.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
I want to give everybody both sides of this, because
everybody's just wanting, uh, we can't, we can't, we can't.
Coach Caliperry, who we know was a one and done guy,
just like a coach K. S. Krzyzewski for numerous years,
highly successful. They were taking the high level McDonald's all
Americans got me and other colleges were taking the star

(23:00):
in the three Stars, Okay, because that was the situation. Well,
what is transpired now is that you're right, the Louisvill's,
the Kentucky's, the Indianas, yes, the North Carolina, all of them,
all of them. Guys are looking for more mature players.
And a twenty four year old Jerry Eves is better
than a nineteen twenty year old national championship Jerry. He's

(23:23):
no question about that. So people are doing that because
they want to keep their jobs. People are being fired
at a high rate. But at the same time, Anthony,
that opens up the bellments now, Scottie Sun, Norfolk States,
North Carolina, A and T's more heads Easterns because they

(23:44):
can recruit the high school kids that the high majors
aren't taking, and they should be doing that. They should
be getting a higher level student athlete than they were
fifteen years ago when everyone was taking everybody was recruiting
high school very heavily, and big boys were taking them,
growing their teams that way, red shirting them one year
and letting them play. So the opportunity is still there,

(24:07):
it just has to be done differently. That's why I
told everybody to be on the show. I'm tired of
the crying and whining. There are more good high school
players to be recruited now. Yes, you're gonna have a
hard time beating the big boys. You always had a
hard time beating the big boys, Anthony, Who are they
kidding themselves? If you go back and look at my
team my era, we didn't play a lot of mid

(24:30):
majors or small schools, but Anthony, we beat them forty
so it had nothing's changed. But Bellaman Norfolk should be
recruiting the high school ranks really hard because players can
come sow their oats, learn how to play. Yes, you're
gonna lose them, but you should be recruiting a higher
level high school player.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
That's all.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
So for all the mid majors that are crying, all
they're taking our players.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
Correct, That is correct.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
But at the same time, you're getting an opportunity to
recruit high school kids that you weren't able to recruit
five years ago. You weren't the mid and the high
majors were taking them. So the low level and mid
majors were not getting that level. They were the ones
that were going to the JUCO. They the more heads
the Norfolk States, which he's built his roster on junior college.

(25:22):
They went to the junior college routes. They were getting
the more mature players. Now you hear them crying. It's
just so funny.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
If you don't know the business, they can tell you anything.
And that's all I'm telling you all. So when you
all hear the Norfolk States, we're just using Bellaman as example.

Speaker 1 (25:38):
We're not saying Scottie as.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
I haven't heard him ever cry about this, but the
low to mid majors, when you're crying now about how
unfair the business is, guys, they were the ones that
were taking the junior college players five ten years ago
and they're getting older players trying to compete with the high
major high school players. They were still getting beat. But
that's the way they were doing it. That's just flip flopped.

(26:01):
That's all, guys. That's all. So I want everybody to
stop the whine anthony. People have been crying so much
about everything. It's amazing. All I'm saying is this. The
college football Playoffs was an exciting time. I had a
lot of fun. I enjoyed watching the games. This year's NCAA,

(26:22):
I've enjoyed watching the games. I don't know why we're
winding about everything. Now players can leave and the tournament's
going on. Excuse me, and the coaches are leaving. Will
Wade at taking a job and was still coaching guys.
I mean, come on, we are hypocritical When it comes
to the youngest people in our country.

Speaker 1 (26:41):
They catch the most flak.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
But old people can have been moving around forever nobody
said a word. But now that the players are moving around,
we have issues.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
The teams are great. Kentucky's playing super at sixteen. Louis
will turn their season completely around, completely around in one year,
which you couldn't have done in the old days. Stop
whining and then starting joining the games. That's all I'm saying.
Eve Sports Radio at seven thirty six, when we come back,
we're gonna talk about this coach of the year, who

(27:12):
should be in and who should be out? After the break,
Welcome back to Eves Sports Radio. Got Anthony on the
other line. We've got to call her Anthony. It's March
to twenty sixth. How quickly March has marched on its
seven forties. Let's go to our first callege deb plan
and welcome to the show.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
Hey, good morning, Jerry and Anthony and the great Shannon
World Champion. I hope everybody's doing well this morning, Jerry.
This got two quick questions about your commentary here this morning.
Number one, Jerry, do you know about chance, who determines
how the draw for the Kentucky State Basketball Tournament is done?

Speaker 1 (27:56):
I do not. I do not.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
Great question, I do not. I do not.

Speaker 4 (28:00):
I understand why that they're playing the two level teams
every year in the first round. I understand that because
the outside country teams or county teams in Kentucky travel
better and they spend more money in the Lexington economy.
That's the reason and I think it's grossly unfair. But
that's the reason why they do that. You know, you

(28:22):
get a little team in far eastern Kentucky, it's a
great story. They come from little school, but darn near
all the county will come to Lexington and watch the games.
And that you know, at the end of the day,
that's what it's all about. It's about the dollar, which
is grossly unfair. But I don't understand that. But anyway,
my second question is the you know, the Nil era

(28:43):
is here. You know, it's it's changed college sports to
me forever. I think it's great. The kids are getting paid,
the participants, the athletes. The only problem I have with
the Jerry is the days of a guy going out
here and recruiting a kid that's maybe a mid level
count coming out of high school and developing him and
watching grow over two or three years and maybe grow

(29:04):
from a three star to an NBA player or an
NFL player or a Major League Baseball player. You know,
those days are gone forever now with nil and and
to me that's sad because think.

Speaker 2 (29:17):
Of this though blended, I want people to that is, yes,
we're watching major schools poach from lower level schools.

Speaker 1 (29:25):
But this is what's going to transpire.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
What is going to happen is that you're going to
start to see players transfer from the Louisvilles and Kentucky's
that aren't playing, and you're going to see them transferring
to the Belomans and the Norfolk States and the Easterns
and the Westerns where they want an opportunity. They'll be
tired of bumping their head against new players coming every
year to where you'll start to see it slide downward. Also,

(29:51):
the movement is not just upward blended, it is both ways.
You'll see people leaving high majors two mid majors, and
you're going to see we hear about the mid majors
going to the high level, we just don't hear about
the reverse.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
But it's going to happen. And blended.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Coach Cali Perry just told you I can't take as
many high school kids as I used to. I just can't,
which means they're more high school players that are going
to go to those mid and low major universities because
that's where their opportunities are going to resent themselves. So
and blended, it's going to work both ways, trust me,
just let it play out now, Jerry, do they need

(30:27):
to add a two year contract? I liked the two
year deal. I don't like players been able to leave
every year. Myself, it needs to be a two year agreement.
But it will happen both ways.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
It is, you know, at the end of the day, though, Jerry,
what my problem is. All this is, and you're right,
everything you're saying is correct, But the problem I have
is it's still at the end of the day. To me,
it's a battle of attrition because you've got like this
past year Ohio State Winston National title on football Ohio State,
but I don't know how many millions of dollars had

(30:59):
the biggest biggiebang for nil and and you know, and
to me, it's going to continue to go that way.
But it's one of those mid majors, Jerry, ever going
to win a national championship. And I say, you know,
in the spirit of competition, I love this, everybody rich
for their underdog, but at the end of the day,
you know that lessens their chance greatly because at the

(31:21):
end of the day, it's all about better players. I mean,
the best coaches in the world. You know, you look
at Shrychevski, Duke. You know, I hain't offer up here
to go to Kentucky, Denny here and and wouldn't at UCLA.
At the end of the day, Jerry, great players make
the coach club greater than what he is. Oh you know,
so that's just planning to be more balanced.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
Okay, here, I understand. But you know America did about balance. Blake,
you know that me and you have talked. But here
I'm going to give you some more facts. So Bland
and I want people I'm glad you said that. I
want people to listen closely. Seven forty four and we're
talking about the balance of power.

Speaker 1 (31:56):
Got me what is fair and what's not fair?

Speaker 2 (31:59):
So we're talking about now Ohio State can go out
football team. They did spend the most, I think, but
I'm pretty sure they were in the top three.

Speaker 1 (32:07):
Just put it that way. I know that's fact.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
They were in the top three spent name, image and
likeness money last year in college football.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
But I just want to give you all the NCAA
basketball champions for a ten year window Landed. I want
everybody to listen.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
Yukon major power, yukon major power, Kansas repeat Baylor Virginia, Villanova,
North Carolina, Villanova, Duke, Connecticut fourteen, Louisville thirteen vacated, Kentucky twelve,
Connecticut eleven, Duke ten, North Carolina nine, Kansas eight, Florida seven,

(32:48):
Florida six, North Carolina five, Connecticut four, Syracuse three, Maryland two,
Duke two thousand and one, and Michigan State two thousand. So, guys,
there's never been any Cinderella winners. Let's just be honest
with ourselves. Maybe want to creep into that final FOURD.

(33:08):
It's a fun little run. But guys, they've never won it.
The blue bloods have always won it, guys always so yes,
Oile State bought it last year, Bladin, but Oile State
had won it before then. The blue bloods have always
won this thing. Let me give it to you some more.

(33:28):
Ninety nine. Connecticut nineteen ninety eight, Kentucky nineteen ninety seven,
Arizona nineteen ninety six, Kentucky nineteen ninety five, Ucla nineteen
ninety four, Arkansas nineteen ninety three, North Carolina nineteen ninety two,
Duke nineteen ninety one, Duke nineteen ninety.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
Las Vegas, Nevada.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Larry Johnson and the Boys if I continue nineteen eighty nine,
Michigan nineteen eighty eight, Kansas nineteen eighty seven, Indiana nineteen
eighty six, Louisville Cardinals nineteen eighty five, Villanova nineteen eighty four, Georgetown,
which was a sleeper but they.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
Were in the Big East nineteen eighty three.

Speaker 2 (34:08):
N C State beat Houston nineteen eighty two, North Carolina
Michael Jordan nineteen eighty one, Isaiah Thomas nineteen eighty Daryl Griffith,
Jerry Eves, guys, and you're right Blanding. At that time
we were Conference USA and it was surprising that we
won it nineteen eighty but we had the best player

(34:28):
in the country.

Speaker 4 (34:29):
Well that was a long time ago, man day, Jerry,
you must be really old.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
Now, but I am old. Yeah, no, thanks brother, So guys,
I'm glad Brandon, but brought that point up.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
All I'm telling you is there's no sleepers winning this thing.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
There's not it just guys, the major powers have won
the championships and they're going to continue. Nothing hash changed,
That's all nothing. We just had a lot of people
that the talking heads have started to mislead people. But
I just gave it to you all the way back

(35:09):
to my championship Anthey in nineteen eighty forty something years ago. God, Lee,
how many twenty? How many is that? Forty four years ago?
Anthony forty five years ago. Good gosh, that's crazy, it's crazy, Anthy.
That just lets you know, guys, there are no upsets.

Speaker 1 (35:26):
They're just not.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
People are just selling your things because it sounds good.
The major powers have always won this thing. Football is
the same way. I could do the exact same thing
for football. So we're at seven forty eight. Let's take
our last break, Shannon. When we come back, we got
to get into this coach of the year and now
I want your opinion.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
Who is the coach of the year.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
It's the sports Radio for numbers five zero two, five, seven,
seventy nine hundred.

Speaker 1 (35:51):
We'll talk to you in a minute.

Speaker 2 (35:53):
Welcome back to Esports Radio seven fifty two. And we
got about five minutes and I need about two of them,
so I'm gonna throw it to you, Nay Smith, coach
of the year running. You've got the one and only
Rick Patino University of Kentucky and Louisville coach.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
Now at Saint John's, You've got.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Kelvin Samson been at Indiana numerous schools, now he's down
at Houston. You've got your boy Jay Shire, your boy Duke,
and we've got Bruce Burrow. Where would you hang your hat, Anthony?
Of the four candidates, and should coach Kelsey be in
that group? Should coach Polk be in that group?

Speaker 1 (36:31):
What do you think, Anthy?

Speaker 3 (36:35):
I think obviously I think coach Pat Kelsey and Mark
Pope have had great seasons. Do I think they're running
for Coach of the Year. No, that's that that's a
different level that they haven't got you yet. Did they
amount what we expected him to do this year for
both schools? Yes, they did. They both reached the NCAA Tournament.
They both had phenomenal seasons, even due to lack of
injuries that they had throughout the seasons on both sides.

(36:57):
Do I still think that their coach of the year kandas? No,
But I define think they're in the top ten when
it comes to running. I just don't think they're the
favorites to actually be.

Speaker 4 (37:04):
The Coach of the year.

Speaker 3 (37:05):
Okay, if I had, if I had to give it
to you my coach of the Year, I would give
it sounds crazy, I would say Rick Patino. And the
only reason why I say that is because if you
look at Saint John's over the last couple of years,
the record from last year end of this year, he
does have a resume of turning programs around within a
one to three year period. He's done it at every

(37:25):
school he's been to. Iona He's done it Saint John's.
So I would have to give I would have to
give it to Rick Patino the other school.

Speaker 1 (37:34):
I got a question for you, though. Here's the funny thing.

Speaker 2 (37:37):
Here's the funny thing, because me, I told everybody no excuses.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
It's all about championships. It is.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
The major teams have won it. Here's my question, though,
guys in this state is so funny. Coach Polk's still
in it, Anthony, If Kentucky wins this damn thing, it
boy gotta be coach of the year.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
Think about it. Now. Rick Patino gone, He going to
the Dodo bird. The other three are still in this.
And I agree with you. If you just looked at it,
you would say coach Patino. But he's gone. Like the
Dodo bird.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
We try to say in this you hear a lot
Kelsey great job and no offensive. But I told him
myself at the press conference, and you're not supposed to
do that. And I know that guys that you're not
supposed to tell a guy that he's done a great job.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
That's what we're supposed to do. I didn't care. I'm
own boss.

Speaker 2 (38:21):
But the bottom line is, Coach Polk is this guy
as many wins other than Auburn and in the top fifteen.
He has had as many injuries as anybody in the country.
I mean true injuries to major players. Coach Kelsey had some.
You know, our guy, your your teammate dad who coached
you prior's coming back. I understand, but we're talking about

(38:43):
major players. We're talking about leading score Edwards sitting on
the bench right now there in the second round. We're
talking about Butler, who I told people could really play,
has been injured.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
I mean, they lost Chris early in the year.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
They've gone through real major injuries to starters Anthony, and
still they're playing. So that's why it's just so funny
when I hear the whine and all the talking heads
around here. I'm just truthful. Now that I've told you that,
it does make you go hmmm. Doesn't it Just be honest,
he's still playing. Coach Folk could win the dang thing,
then he'd had to be Coach of the Year. I

(39:14):
hate it. I mean I hate to say it because
I mean, people gonna get mad at me. But and
Kentucky Advance is another game or two that man has
to be looked at. He was beating Florida with no
team tennesseee twice with injured players. These teams are still
playing for it all. People believe Florida's gonna win it
beat them one hundred and six to one hundred.

Speaker 3 (39:34):
So you still have the other three out of four
coaches in the nation fifth running that are no question.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
Absolutely, I'm with it.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
I'm with that, and I understand Marco. That's why I
said he's in the top ten. But if you have
those teams that have advanced just as far as uk
Mark Pope isn't going.

Speaker 4 (39:50):
To be the coach of the year favorite.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
I know he's not.

Speaker 1 (39:52):
I'm just throwing it out there.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
I agree with you, but it does make you say, hmmm,
because coach Mattino, you're not the only I'm not jumping
on you. I would probably say if you looked at it,
I had to go with Coach Patino too. They were
picked middle of the pack at the Big East Lookal
they've done.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
Blase got me.

Speaker 2 (40:09):
But the bottom line fact of the matter is when
this thing matters, which is now, and we gotta cut
when you gotta cut the mustard. Coach Patino is the
only one of the three that's gone, so that means
one another three have to win it in my opinion.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
But they don't. That doesn't work like that. You can't
have a rich history of getting good players. When the
last time Saint john's'd we.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
Gotta go, we only got ten seconds that we're talking
about it.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
Bor to borrow, You'll have a great day. Bye bye,
