Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to Eve's sports radio. Phone number is five
zero two five seven one seventy nine hundred. It is
Sports Talk seven ninety KRD. We've got Shennon behind the glass.
I have not done anything to Shannon.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Shannon. People were worried.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
About you yesterday. They said they thought we were going
to get into it on the air. I told them
I do not fight for free, Shannon. We will sell tickets,
popcorn will be popping, and soda will be sold. Nothing's free.
But Shannon's fine. He came back in. He's not frightened.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Of course.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
I've got Anthony, my younger son, my co host with me. Anthony,
how are you.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
I'm doing good this morning.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
I'm glad you threw that out there for Ayby, like
you were just gonna win that fight by admire the confidence.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
That's what people were worried about me, Anthony. They really
thought that I had done something. They said, Jerry, we
know you don't smoke or drink, but they were wondering
if I was owing something.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
I said, no, I wasn't. I'm just confident.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
I'm confident on Mondays, not as confident on Tuesdays, but
Monday is my Anthony I come out strong. So you know,
Shannon was in my crosshairs and I just had to
let him know.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
That's all.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So he's fine, though, people from Bulladie Shannon calling me
saying I don't know if you want to mess with Shannon.
I said, well, that may be true, but he doesn't
know that, Chann, he don't know that.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
He doesn't know he might believe the wolf.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Anyway, guys, I hope everybody had a fantastic Monday. I did,
got a lot done at work. We got a great show.
First time ever, we will be having the one and
only p K Pat Kelsey on EVE Sports Radio. He'll
be calling in at about fifteen or so minutes. We're
going to talk with him about his tremendous first year
at University of Louisville and what's his expectations are for
(01:45):
this upcoming season. And of course we've got all the
national news that I think we were worried about the
Cleveland Cavaliers Anthony, but we have seen now that all
the NBA teams have been punched in the mouth. So guys,
they're real series now. Please watch. The games are great,
the guys are playing. They are tremendous games. Great competition,
(02:08):
great skill level. You have to watch Joka and the guys.
Murray you have to watch them, and Mitchell. You have
to watch them because they're playing really well.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
But I want to get some business out of the way.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
First thing, Anthony, I'm gonna let you have the TBT,
but I'm gonna go to Coach Kelsey's basketball camp and
he's gonna.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Have three We are not through.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
He's been three sessions from June twenty third through twenty fifth,
the twenty ninth through thirty first, from nine am to
one pm. Make sure that you'll get out, get your
kids enrolled. They're gonna learn a lot. I love something
that I was reading about it his ABC, which I'm
gonna let him say what that is.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
I'm not gonna tell you Coach Kelsey's ABC.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
I'm gonna ask him about it when he comes on
the show about his basketball camp. But when I read
it and put a smile on my face, I like
that antonym. So I like that he also has a
son camp, Anthony, which I never did at North Carolina
and t I wish I would have such a great idea.
A lot of people have done it, I know, and
it's just a tremendous idea. He's got a father and
(03:11):
son camp July twenty fifth and twenty sixth. Starts at
five pm on the twenty fifth and ends at one
pm on the twenty sixth. Of course it's at Plant Fitness,
Curver Center and the KFC Young Center. Will these will
be held, so we've got to make sure we get
out support the cards, which we have done. The crowds
came back. I mean, I was just so happy to
(03:32):
walk in the Young Center at the end of last
season and it.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Just reminded me of the good old day.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
So we have coach Kelsey on Anthony tell me a
little bit about that TBT that's going on.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
A lot of good players gonna play this year.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
Yeah, and we got a lot of former plays coming in.
We got a lot of new faces too, which is
which is nice to see obviously for some of the
guys we had on the roster last year. We still
have Rush Smith coming back, Mantres Harrol will be coming
back again as well, and Luke Hancock is going to
be actually serving us as head coach for the first
time this summer, so I'll be a little bit new.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
He'll be the head coach this year.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
But obviously some new face. Obviously we have David Sloan
will be joining the roster as well. He is a
former Louisville native played out of Kansas State for some
of his college career.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
We also got Jays.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Grubb playing in as well too.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
He's got another Louisville naval playing in.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yes, and I ain't good player, Anthony. Jay's a good player.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I want people to know now, Jay is still a
quality player. That was when you told me that this morning.
It surprised me. I know David Johnson is still playing,
but Jay s Grutz can't play guys. He I can't
believe that he has not solidified himself on an NBA roster.
I've seen him at the summer League, Anthony, for now,
I don't know, probably six or seven years in a row.
(04:46):
I don't know what he I just don't know what
they're missing. He reminds me of an Alvin Simms.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Alvin. I don't know how he missed. I don't know
how Jay is not. He's made good money, but I
don't know how he's not solidified a roster spy. I
just don't.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
But he's going to be playing on the Louisville team,
which is going to be exciting, Anthony, eight regions. Of course,
we haven't heard from the Wildcat team who defeated AS
last year, but I'm sure they'll be coming back with
the team.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Anthony. It's going to be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
And of course, guys, you can the more fans that
show up, the quicker we sell four thousand tickets, the
faster they get to have home court advantage throughout this tournament,
better chance that the guys get a chance to win
some money. And I'm all about the winning some money,
So we need to make sure we get out there
and support. So we got those things going on, and
of course we'll be out there, Anthony. I've been out
(05:35):
the first two years, and I saw coach Kelsey out
there last year. I didn't speak with him, but I
saw him out there last year, So it's gonna be
a lot of fun. So we got those things going on.
So lots of things are in the win Anthony. Now
before we go to break, because when coach Kelsey calls in,
I want to be finished with my first break, Anthony,
tell me a little bit about which we'll talk more
(05:57):
about after Coach Kelsey leaves NBA Playoffs, Anthony, what do
you think God Okay See gets busted in the mouth?
I mean, the Pacers handed to the Cavs, the Knicks
come from down twenty on the Celtics.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
What do you think?
Speaker 4 (06:14):
NBA Playoffs was just the definition of an underdog, Dan,
That's what it was.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
It was an underdog day.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
All the underdogs won the games, obviously, even the Warriors
were the underdogs will win their series, and everybody is
still expecting a lot of people still expecting the Warriors
to pull it out.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
But the last four.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
Games has technically been all underdog dicks and the Warriors
being the Rockets. In Game seven, one three eighty nine,
Pacers defeat the Cavaliers one one twelve. Now I will
say the Cabollys were all missing Darius Garland, which is
a big factor for their offense. Will he return the series?
I have no idea. It's just a tow injury, but
who knows the actual depths of how deep the injury is.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Like I told you, and I said it during the
NCAA tournament, Anthony, it's tournament time.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Now you gotta play and win.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
I said it for the college kids, Anthony, Cleveland's the
best team in the East. They gotta find win, period,
point blank. I give no excuses. You gotta go get
it done, Anthony. Everybody's injured down in that league. I
did it, Anthony, I promise you I coached in it.
Everybody's injured, everybody's hurt, everybody's beat up a lot of games.
But anty you yourself. You know they're playing right now though,
(07:18):
and they're going at it. So you wait till game two, okay,
c against the Nuggets, and you wait till the Calves.
You're gonna see a different team. Trust me, you're gonna
see different teams. Watch the Celtics. I love what Brown
said when he was describing maybe we shouldn't shoot all
three pointers, almost said it almost made me say bad words.
I have a little saying where I say, no blank shrlock,
(07:40):
no sh t. You understand what goes in the middle
of that third, that fourth letter, no blank sherlock. Of course,
you have to play the full game. You can't live
on the three point line. You're not Curry, period. That's
a problem. Everybody thinks they are. The Celtics got away
with it last year, but it's not gonna happen this year,
You're gonna have to play smash mouth basketball Joker. Last night, Anthy,
(08:04):
it was a wrestling match. Joker still had forty two.
He's a bad man. That's all there is to it.
He is a bad man. So I'm pumped tonight. Who
do we have tonight? Golden State and the Timberwolves. I
know anyone else playing tonight at.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
YEP, we got the Pacers and fav Game Game two tonight.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Good game.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
So any We're gonna get to break so that when
coach Kelsey comes in, we don't have to go to
break with him. We'll just talk until he calls in.
This is Eve Sports Radio. It's seven thirty and then
I were waiting. We got coach Kelsey calling in. We'll
talk to you all after the break.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Welcome back to Eves Sports Radio. It is seven sixteen.
Can you all believe?
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Honestly, it's May the six, twenty five Tuesday. I've been
telling you all this is the first time, will not
be the last time, but the first time for the
one and only PK coach Pat Kelsey. University of Louisville
men's basket ball coach Anthony. I've been waiting for this
day for a long time, but I want to start
it with the first thing, Coach, How good is your
(09:07):
horse going to be? Because Ken Big Pete said he's
going to make him a Derby winner. How good, Coach,
I'm putting the pressure on you right away. How good?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Wow? Wow?
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Well, first of all, you said to one and only.
I'm far from that, but you're the one and only.
There's a small select group of players that have played
in this storied and tradition rich program, that have climbed
up ladders, cut down nets, and and you were a
national champion and played for one of the great icons
in the history of our sport. So I got great
(09:38):
reverence for you and your team what you guys did
to lay the foundation for what came after. And uh,
it's an honor to be here, and it's honored to
be on with you, coach. But man, when when when
I found out I've learned a lot about horse racing
and bourbon since I've been here, and Kenny, when I
found out they named a horse after me, And then
(09:58):
Kenny invited me down to the back and then I
saw you that day and I got to catch up
with you with my family, which was really cool. You
talk about a humbling experience. So I didn't know how
this works. Like all of a sudden, I thought, maybe, hey,
this horse is in the Derby this year. And he
was like, relaxed, Chelsey, it's uh, he goes, he goes.
Here's what Kelsey is right now? And I said, what
(10:18):
he goes. It's a stinking rookie. It's a freshman. It
doesn't know up from down. I'll let you know in
about a year whether it has a chance. Until then,
simmer down a little bit. So put me in my
place for a little bit. I got humbled quickly after
having a horse named after me.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I know.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Mcpete is a cat fan, as you well know. His
wife is a car true and true. So we have
him corner, trust me, we give him at L L.
But he's a great trainer, he's a great guy. I
broke him into the PGA tournament last year and the
place went wild at Valhallo.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
I mean they went.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Completely crazy when they saw kidding get Pete out there.
We had a great time. But coach, I want to
tell you something before we get started. As you well know,
I stayed at half a game. We spoke Josh and
I had great conversation, but I wanted to stay at
the I stayed for the whole Kentucky game at RUP,
and I wanted to talk to you at the NCAA
tournament because I just wanted to tell you you did
(11:10):
a fantastic job with my program, period.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Point blank.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
That's why I wanted to tell everybody in front of everybody,
I had no questions for you. It was a tough loss.
I could see it in your face, but I wanted
you to know, young man, you did. I said you'd
have twelve wins. Coach, I don't lie, Coach Kesey, I
don't allow on the show. I didn't think you'd have
twelve thirteen wins to do. What you did was straight phenomenal,
and I just want to let everybody know congratulations.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
But coach, did you think you'd ever be that good?
Did you ever? In your wildest dreams?
Speaker 1 (11:39):
I think you could go do the things you did
eighteen and two in the A SEC twenty seven and eight.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Overall, well, I mean I have to say this first, Coach, like, unfortunately,
when you have some success, the person on the coaching
staff that kind of gets the accolades as the head
coach and nothing could be further from the truth that
I'm the only one that made this thing happen. I believe, coach,
(12:04):
that I have the best coaching staff in the United
States of America. We have this thing that kind of
defines our culture. That's called twenty five strong. And you
know now that we're at the Power five level or
Power four level, there's more than twenty five people in
your organization, which took a little bit of getting used to.
But what that stands for is each What that stands
(12:27):
for is just each person organization doing their job with
excellence coach every single day and being process oriented and
attacking excellence and what they do whether you're the student manager,
you're the associate head coach, or the head coach or
the walk on point guard. And we just focused on
that daily. And I told the guys on day one,
you know, the outcome and the results are going to
(12:47):
take care of themselves. I said, the one thing you
guys don't have to worry about is us being really,
really good. But we got to win the now, the
next film session, the next weight training, the next individual workout,
and those I stay true to that. They didn't blink,
they didn't bend, whether we hit some adversity and some injuries,
whether we hit some are you know, some tough losses
early on you mentioned one of them. Those guys just
(13:10):
kept grinding. We had great leadership and it ended in
a phenomenal season that ended a little too early, but
has left the taste in our mouth that's driving us
to do something great next year.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
I had no question. My son, Anthony's got a question
for you.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Go ahead, and how can we do to recruit me
out of college?
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I'm just kidding that question. Hey, Hey, what's up ant?
How are you? Thanks for having me on? Hey doing
with Kelsey?
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Uh No, But our real question is is just obviously
you want to know how are you going to handle
the expectations for this upcoming season. I know last year,
your first year coming in, you know, we were I
was in a similar bows my dad. We went over
to sit here tonight. I just thought a first year
coming in with a full restart of a roster, I
thought five hundred would be about best is what we
would do.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Just in.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
So what we just came out of the last two years,
and obviously kind of the coaching situation we had before.
But you did a phenomenal job.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
I will say that much.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
You know, I hate to say it. I am a
Duke fan so.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Nervous. Sometimes y'all made me nervous.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
I'm not gonna lie, I'll made me nervous. I was like,
because Duke has we look kind of suspect. I'm gonna
be honest, but I don't know how you're gonna handle
the expectations coming in for this next season coming up.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Yeah, that that's a that's a great question. Well, my
first nine years in the business. UH, Coach Eves knows
this because we competed against each other. I was at
Wake Forest with Skip Prosser and it was ABC. It
was anybody but Carolina. So the fact that you're dupe
that that doesn't make you know you're a little bit
further down in the echelon of programs that I can't stand.
(14:48):
I hope nobody can call because I'm not trying to.
I'm not trying to get that any ammunition. And I
think I think maybe I did that, so you know,
and that the thing I would say, And sometimes I
feel I can be a boring interview because I'm going
to reiterate a little bit what I just said. You know,
the expectations are what they are. You know, that's outside noise,
(15:08):
that's Look. One of the things that makes Louisville great,
one of the reasons why it's the greatest job in
all of college basketball is the passion and the excitement
within our fan base. I mean, basketball in this town
is runs through the veins of people that live here.
(15:30):
It's in their dna. It's almost like a religion here,
and that is phenomenal. We sell that every single day
when we're talking to recruits about you won't play for
a fan base that will embrace you like this place will.
If you play with grit, you play with toughness, and
you play with tenacity. But like you know, whether it's
(15:51):
when things are good, you know, people pat me on
the back, you have to ignore that when when things
are when things go bad and you lose a game,
or you lose a couple of games, you have some injuries,
and you know, look, I'm a Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati
Bengals fan. If stuff goes bad, the ceiling balls, like
I think, I think the world's going to be on the.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Yeah, we'll be all right, we'll be all right.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
But this year.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
Yeah, Tito Francona is a stud I love following them
and listening to his postgame talks and just you know,
I got to meet him, coach. I don't mean to
go off off, I got to meet him. I got
to meet him in Louisville when the Reds caravan came
down to the Bats stadium, and the people from the
Bats have been great to me, invited me down. I
got to spend like thirty minutes with him, and he
(16:38):
couldn't have been more gracious with his time, gave me
his number, told me to call him when I come
to a game, and I'm thinking like yeah, right, like
he the next day, I get like this really long
text about hey, I'm rooting for you. I mean it
if you ever need anything. I mean, he couldn't have
been cooler. And he's one of the greatest managers to
ever ever manage. So uh, my point it really is.
(17:00):
And my point though, is you can't get caught up
in that. In leadership, you can't get caught up that.
As as the head coach is what I call this,
not the CEO of the organization, the cro that's the
chief reminder officer. I have to remind everybody every day
what our standard is and let let all the other
stuff fall where it may, and let the chips fall
(17:22):
where they may. If we we're gonna be really talented
next year, coach, Like, I hate, I hate to say
this because I'm not saying anything disparaging about this team,
because this team was special. Like we're gonna be We're
gonna be more talented than last year's team. But the
key to last year's team was the power of the unit,
the uncommon commitment to the guy next to you, the selflessness,
(17:45):
the buying of roles, and that's what made him special.
And so my job, my responsibility is to make sure
this team is even closer. And in terms of the expectations,
you know, I love what you guys do, and you're
really really good at what you do. But like, my
job is not to listen to the ups and downs.
(18:05):
My job is to have those guys ready for the
next thing we do.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
No great point, coach, a lot of coach crumbing that
I want you to mention the players that you can
talk about. I know you can't do NCAA rules speak
about some, but who can you speak some of your
newcomers that you can talk about to our fans that
are listening.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Coach, well, well, I think what's awesome about this coming here,
first of all is we have we have a core
group coming back that was with us all last year,
two of which didn't play, but they were integral part
of our success. Kobe Rogers and Ali Khalifa, two unbelievable leaders.
Kobe was one of the best scards in our conference
(18:44):
our last year at the College of Charleston, and his
dad played for the Reds. Believe it or not, we
lost him to cancer several years ago. Kobe is just
a world class kid, and I don't think people realize
how good he is. And phenomenal defender. Uh and then
Ali Khalifa, who's the seven foot transfer from BYU that
(19:05):
sat out last year, and coach, he's one of the
top five passing bigs on planet Earth. Like I'm not
talking in college basketball. I'm talking about in the world,
as you know, like the way we play, you know,
our fives touched the ball constantly on every possession. He
is essentially another point guard, so we I think he
(19:26):
had a four to one assistant turnover ratio at BYU,
which is crazy at seven foot, so really excited about him,
you know, can I roots I think has unbelievable upside.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
He just yes, he did.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Wrong athletic. He showed some flashes and he knows he
has to get more consistent. But I mean he's just
scratching the surface. And the reason I know he's going
to be really, really good is that he just works
tenaciously at his game. Javon Hadley, who is a you know,
Javon is I don't want to say underappreciated, because I
think people do appreciate him. But man, what he does,
(20:03):
what he brings to the table translates to winning in
every way shape or for him. He is such a
good defender. He is so stinking tough. He scores when
you need him to score. He's a great leader. He's
one of the unsung pieces of last year's team, and
I think one of our m v ps. You know,
to to to be honest with you, So.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
He brought his hardhead every game, no question. Tough kid, yeah, every.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
Every single day.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
You know.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
Mikel Brown, who is you know, arguably one of the
you know, one of the one of the best point
guards in in the country. Don's all American. Uh my goodness,
Mike kel is a point guards point guard. He's the
son of a coach. He talked about the pick and
roll at the breakfast table from the time he was
(20:56):
three years old. He's long, he's athletic, he can really
really score the ball. Just all the attributes that an
elite level NBA point guard has, you know he has.
I'm probably going into too much detail because you only
have fifteen minutes with me. As you know, when I
get talking about.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
You say you have to go, We're on there until
you say you have to go, coach, So it's on you.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
I appreciate your time.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
The three guards that we signed out of the transfer portal,
you know, gosh, in my opinion, three of the best
guards that were in the transfer portal. I think they
are all special in their own way. The commonalities between
all of them is they're winners, they're tough, they love hoop,
all things that we really really value. They've had amazing
(21:43):
success where they've been. Isaac McNeely was an all around guard,
but his calling card is that of arguably the best
shooter in the entire country. Ryan Tomwell, who was on Indiana, states,
you know, one of the greatest teams in the history program,
probably outside Larry Bird's team, and then and then transferred
(22:04):
to Xavier this past year as one of the best,
you know, combo scoring guards in the entire country. It
was first team All Big East last year. Adrian Wooley,
who was Chiel. I mean, he's probably on a list
of one of the top three freshmen in the entire country.
Last year at Kennesaw State, average eighteen a game and
(22:27):
on fifty forty and eighty splits with over one hundred
turnal one hundred assists.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
Let me explain that to people from the field, guys,
which is unheard of, forty from the three, which is
unheard over, and eighty percent from the line.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
The kid puts the ball in the basket, period, point blank.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
Can can flat can flat score it? You know, And
then and then you know some of the you know
how it is in the world. You have our fan
base is so knowledgeable and they just eat up everything
Louisville basketbaball. So they they know there's some exciting news
and announcement that we can officially announce uh some sometime
(23:08):
really really soon. But jeezus, uh can't talk about him.
But but you know, God so so we're so we're
excited about a couple of announcements that are going to
be coming up here over the next over the next
couple of weeks, and you know, I just couldn't be
more fired up about our team.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
I always say like this time of year, and you
don't have to say this in Louisville, but if you're
really really quiet, coach, late at night, you're really quiet,
and you keep still, you can already hear that ball
starting to bounce, and it won't be long where November
is gonna come around and the young is going to
be jumping again. I can't really, I can't really talk
(23:51):
about all of our schedule yet because there's some things
that need to be solidified, tied up and signed. I
don't know what's been signed and what hasn't signed. Brian Cloman,
who's my right hand man, essentially, my associate head coach,
I trust him with my life. He handles the majority
of our schedule and it briefs me on it on
a daily basis. But we're gonna have a phenomenal schedule
and couldn't be more excited.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
Coach.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
You don't duck anyone. That's why I love you. Just
like Coach Crumb. You duck no one, You play everybody,
and that's the right way to build your program. Last question, Coach,
where I let you go The they mentioned likeness, landscape
of college athletics has changed.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
I got one question for you. Though I think you've
got ten or eleven scholarships, you've got a few that
you have to feel. There's a gentleman.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
I know he's six foot four, he's sixty six, but
he's solid with the ball.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
But I just need I just need about one hundred
dollars a game. Do you got a spot for me? Coach,
But talk to me about the land.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
I'll find a spot for you, and I'll find some
money for you. Give me a national champion and a
and a student of the great Denny Crumb every day
of the week and twice on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
As you take Darryl Griffith and Rodney McCray and Derek
Smith and Wiley, you'll get you one. Jerry's won't get
you one. But those other four guys with Jerry's we
could do a lot of things.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
Coach.
Speaker 3 (25:06):
The last crazy, It is crazy when you when you
like rattle off those names like that. I mean icons.
You know, there's a lot of people. There's a lot
of people that say, you know, they talked about like
the Fab five made college basketball cool again, and it
was it was this iconic. Well, that team was iconic
as well. I've been told since I've been here that
that team invent at the High five. And I don't
(25:28):
know if you want to take credit for it, but no.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
We did coach that, Wiley Brown did. I said it yesterday.
That's fact. We did.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Yes, Yeah, I mean, I mean iconic.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Yes, that's why. That's why we did.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
We were Well, we're trying to make you guys. We're
trying to make We're trying to make you guys proud
every day because we know what you guys started.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
I'm a coach. I'm upset about one player. I told
you when we were at Wagner's and you love him,
and I mean I I think that the young man.
There's no way in my mind I could see James
Scott leaving the program. I know that he's put his
name in coach. Your offense was suited for him.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
How does it make you feel in other coaches when
you know that the offense is perfect for a young
man and some reason they think the pastors are greener.
And you don't have anything derogatory to say about that kid.
I loved how you explained it to him, just said, coach.
I had tears of my eyes. I couldn't believe it.
What do you think when players make bad decisions like
that to leave?
Speaker 3 (26:24):
Just love them? Just love them. You know, it's the
most powerful force in the universe. And uh, you know,
we get we spend more time. We spend more time
with our players and our staff than we do our
own families. It's it's crazy, just the commitment that you
have to make, and it's I get to do this
every day. I am very, very blessed to be the
(26:44):
head coach University of Louisville. But you know, I love
I love my players and I pour into them. And
you know, if if somebody like James moves on and
he thinks it's a better situation for him somewhere else, obviously,
when we sit down and we talk and I'm good
point and telling him, well, I you know, I think
the best place for him is here. But once they
(27:04):
make that decision, you know, they don't just exit my life.
I'm going to be there for them forever. I mean,
there'll be a time down the road when he needs
me for whatever reason, and I'll always be there for him.
You know, he's got a phenomenal family, a great mom.
She was one of my favorite moms that I've ever
dealt with in coaching and in recruiting, and I wish
him all the best. Coach, He'll he'll do great wherever
(27:25):
he goes. And you know he's a fine young man
and a really good player.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
He is.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
You got a basketball camp, coach, we got the tvt
We've got two exciting things going on this summer. Let's
talk about that t Yeah, tb Luke head coach, what
do you think?
Speaker 3 (27:41):
Yeah, well, thanks for bringing both of those up, because
I think the TBT and what our team does for
the city of Louisville and University of Louisville was phenomenal.
It was the first one I experienced last year, and
I remember walking into Freedom Hall and Coach, I can't
believe I'm saying this because I'm from right up the road.
I never say foot into Freedom Hall ever. Yeah, I
(28:02):
can just speak. You can feel the mystique when you
walk in that place. And then one of the crowds.
I mean, there's like fifteen thousand people here and they
want on a run in the roar, and you could
just see why it was such an iconic, historic arena.
But just what those guys do for the city. And
that's the first time it hit me with how crazy
(28:22):
our fan base is. I mean, here's a summer tournament
of former players and they're packing this iconic arena. It
was awesome. So I'm a big fan of all those guys, Luke.
As you know, Peyton's on my staff. He's going to
be helping out to some extent with them. And Peyton's
a world class person by the way. People don't realize
the contribution that he made behind the scenes. And then
(28:43):
the camp, like you know, go to the website, you know,
and you can get all the information about our camp.
We think we have the best camp in the country.
We pour into it. We make sure that I mean
it's not something that I show up in the beginning
of the day and I show up at the end
of the day. I mean I'm around the entire time
throughout the day. We make it one of the best
(29:03):
experiences in all of basketball. So we'd love to have
everybody come out.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Coach, I want you to tell people what your ABC is.
I read that last night. I was going to do it,
but I want you to do it about a for
academics to be tell me about that.
Speaker 3 (29:17):
Yeah, yeah, so that's a skip Prosser. And I know
you knew coach Prosser really well time seventeen years ago.
Seventeen years ago we lost him, but you know, he
was one of the good things about college basketball. And
he would always say in the very first team meeting
or in a home visit with the recruit, he would
look at the parents and he would say, you know,
our program is founded on the ABC's and that's academics,
(29:40):
basketball and character. I mean, even in this new world
of quote unquote professional sports, it's still some of the
formative years of these guys' lives. And professional basketball isn't
going to be for everybody. But even if it is,
for so many professional basketball to have that degree, that
opens up doors for them for the rest of their life.
So the academic component is always going to be first
(30:01):
and emphasize here and then viaz basketball, we want hoop dudes.
We want guys that are passionate coach about their craft
because if you're not a hoop dude, you will be
miserable in our program. And then the sea is character.
That's the most important one. It's selflessness. It's giving up
yourself for the good of the team. It's being a
great locker room guy. It's embracing your role, it's loving
(30:22):
your teammates, ABC academics, basketball character. And I love acknowledging
Coach Prosser in that because he was a big mentor
to me and I missed him to this day.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Coach, that's the way the end of the show. There's
no better way.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Without a doubt, Coach Prosser was the very best, a
super coach. Coach Kelsey, I appreciate you coming on E
Sports Radio. We'll have to get together and I hope
to see you soon.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
All right, coach, and take care guys. Thanks for having
me on.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
You know it a pa Anny. What do you think?
What do you think of Coach Kelsey?
Speaker 3 (30:56):
I think it's pretty cimvil man.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
It's hard not to love the guy.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
I'm trying to. I'm not.
Speaker 4 (31:01):
I'm not even big big as U of L fan,
but but dang it, you gotta love coach Pete. You know,
I'll probably still be at it. I'm gonna still be
at the games and cheer for Milans.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
They'll play.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Dude, all right, I'm gonna be that little I'm gonna
be that blue and everybody's hating.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
I know you got it naturally, though, Anthony, he lived
in Carolina longer than you lived in Kentucky. I tell
people that all the time we were in North Carolina.
Just Coach Kelsey was the assistant coach at wake Forest. Guys,
and we're gonna go to break, We'll run two breaks, Shannon.
But he was the assistant coach at wake Forest when
I was the head coach at a NT and of
course we played them, Anthony, So I met Coach Kelsey
(31:40):
when he was an assistant coach.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Like I said, I know most people in this business, guys,
I truly know. But we had a chance to play.
And I used to go to their camps because Coach
Cross and I were really good friends, really good friends.
So that's why Coach Kelsey saw me quite a bit.
And Coach Kelsey saw my program go three, six, nine, seventeen.
He saw me turn it around. Coach Prosser used to
talk to this team about, look how Anti has done it.
(32:02):
We did it the right way. And he was a
really good friend of mine.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
At Advocate and he helped me when I was in
North Carolina, helped him with recruiting and different things. But
Coach Kelsey's come up underneath a lot of great coaches,
and I'm just happy for him, and we're waited. Like
you said, I can hear the balls bouncing right now.
And Guys, I've always said it, and I'm going to
say it again when Louis was good and Kentucky is good,
and we've got to get Indiana good again, really, I
(32:28):
mean really good. I was mad at Mike Woodson being fired,
not Kenny Payne.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
Guys.
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Josh Hurt will tell you directly. I knew Kenny had
to go, that's just the fact. But I wanted him
to hire Kenny.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
I did. But we need Indiana good.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
When we can get those three teams again back in
the top fifteen, Anthony, it changes the landscape of college
athletics and this area. So it's seven forty E Sports Radio, Shannon,
take us to break. Coach Kelsey. We really appreciate you
coming on and taking your time out this morning. We'll
talk to you all after the break. Well, we come
(33:00):
back to Eve Sports Radio seven forty six. Andy, Like
I said, it's unbelievable. It is May the sixth. I mean, boy,
Christmas will be here upon us before we know it. So, Anthony,
here's what we've got.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
I want people to know that coach Kelsey there were
a few players that he could not speak about because
NCAA rules.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
The young man from Germany is one from who he
says is really good. He just can't speak publicly. But
he says that he's really good, but you can't do
that until they're finished playing. So that's why you didn't
hear him mention a few of the other players. But
great recruiting class, Anthony, I'm probably going to have one
day this week where you take us through all of them,
(33:40):
Kentucky and Louisville's recruiting class for this year because both
teams have phenomenal recruiting classes.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Both teams.
Speaker 1 (33:47):
Everyone keeps yelling out, both teams are spending a lot
of money on their rosters.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
And again, people, I've told you all, I don't believe
the numbers. I could be wrong. I have no idea.
This is one thing I was never in college athletics
when there was a name, image and likeness. I don't know.
Like most things, I do know when I tell you all,
i'm telling you the truth. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
I just don't believe the numbers that we're hearing. So
but we'll have to wait and see sooner or later
that will get worked out. But here's the problem I have.
And we're talking about the numbers because and everyone who's
listening to my show knows that I've probably said Anthony
before you came on. When Nick Saban was coaching Alabama.
(34:30):
If I didn't say roll tiede one time, I probably
said it a thousand times. And I picked Nick Saban's
teams to win. And they're well coached, they're tough, they're disciplined,
they're talented, all hold nine yards and all the things
that I said, all the accolades are correct. But I
heard the other day that he had issues with our president,
(34:52):
President Trump, talking about we have to get a grip
on something. You know, this name, image and likeness is
ruining the game. Okay, most watched football playoffs this year.
Basketball ratings jumped this year. Players are being paid something.
They are they are receiving some compensation and okay, they are,
(35:15):
But I just want to I have a problem with
guys that have been in the business just like I
have since nineteen ninety I've been coaching and bumping into
them at every level. And I always give George Williams
a hard time because you know, Georgia will talk about
all the great games, but honestly, he's just a great
backyard hooper.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
You know, he's Crawford Gym.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
But actually, when we're sitting here talking about games and
national championships and tournaments and coach crumbs, preparation and NBA
games and semi finals and all the above, I got
all that experience got you guys, all of it. And
I've run into the Nick Sabans of the world. I've
(35:55):
bumped into all the football coaches, just like the basketball coaches.
It's a very small fraternity. But I've heard a few
people now that have gotten out of the game, coaches
squabbling about you know, players are receiving some compensation. They
are guys, they are And I've said to you all
that I'm gonna say again, and I mean, I think
(36:17):
this is a problem. I really do, a deep rooted
problem when the bottom of the barrel finally gets paid
Is this the end of the story. Let me say
this to you again. When the last people on the
tote them bother get paid, it's the end of the story.
Uh oh boy, we're in trouble. We're gonna ruin the
golden goose. Well, I'm gonna give you all facts. And
(36:39):
when Nick Saban is talking about the players now for
two or three years receiving some compensation, I still don't
believe the money value that we're hearing. But let's say
that it's true. And let's say you're a guy at Texas,
you're a Texas football fan. Let's say that Manning is
receiving four million dollars. Okay, let's say he is, and
(37:01):
some of the basketball players are getting two and a
half three million dollars. Or Cooper Flag supposedly made four
million dollars. Okay, let's say that he is. Cooper Flags
were well worth four million dollars. No ifs, no ants,
no butts, period point blank. He was that good, He
brought that much attention to the college game. I love
watching him, and so did you. He's worth it, period
(37:22):
point blank. But when I start to hear coaches that
have made over one hundred million dollars coaching, and I
never heard anybody crying.
Speaker 2 (37:33):
I was one of them. So let's just be honest.
Jerry Eves on Eves Sports Radio is set on my
show that my picture is in the post office, and
every post office in America is stilling money. When you're
the coaching profession and they pay you to do something
that you love doing, like coach Kelsey just said, and
get paid the amount of money they were being paid,
(37:55):
Hippocad's not even a word, period, point blank. Nick, shut
UPO point blank. You're bigger than life in life, I know.
And as long as you're the Alabama football coach, people
had to listen to you. But guys a lot like
a lot of them.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
He's not gonna break a fingernail in the streets, but
he did a great job coaching. Now when he has
in his contract, I get paid money on my students grades.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
How stupid is that? That's because they were giving away money.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
They the NCAA, the presidents, the athletic directors were giving
money away because they couldn't pay the student athlete, so
they found a way to give people other people's money.
So in everybody's contract, coaches and mine at ant. I
got five thousand dollars for my coach kids grades.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
I did.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Also, you got me get paid for other people's grades.
That's dumb, period, point blank, that's stupid.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
I'm going to give you not salaries, not ten eleven million,
not made over one hundred million dollars in this business.
Now that you know, uh oh, players are being paid.
I never heard. And I want you all to scratch
your grave matter.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
I want you to sit there and truly think about
when you saw a coach go on record to a
president talking about, Hey, can you believe jimbo Fisher got
paid seventy six million dollars to leave?
Speaker 2 (39:19):
Do you to leave the coach seventy six not to
coach to leave? Let me say it to you all again.
When did you hear a college coach screaming to administrators
and the president of the United States that it's gone crazy.
(39:40):
We're paying coaches seventy six million to leave. I'm not finished.
I'm gonna give you more.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
I'm gonna give you guys the list of the top
ten buyouts in college football.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
And I googled it. I never saw one word from
Nick Saban, one word.
Speaker 1 (40:01):
Gusbezon twenty one point five million for Auburn to leave,
Charlie Wise nineteen million, Notre Dame to leave, Willie Taggard
eighteen million, Florida's eight to leave, ed Origin sixteen point
nine million, LSU to leave, the program to leave, not coach,
(40:27):
not mentor young people to leave. Never heard a word,
not one word from Nick Saban, not one word. Tom
Allen fifteen point five men from Indiana. I pumped Tom Allen.
He had a great one and a half years at IU.
Other than that he was a bust period, point blank.
(40:49):
Go google it when you see Nick Saban saying, oh,
by the way, the business has gone crazy. Fifteen point
five million to leave. I'man at Texas fifteen point four
million to leave, Art Brows fifteen point one million from
Baylor to leave, Scott Frost fifteen million from Nebraska to leave,
(41:11):
Number ten, Bobby Petrino fourteen point one million from Louisville
to leave.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Never saw one.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Mentioned from Nick Saban or two years ago when he
and his wife sitting there and his wife said, I
can't believe the only thing these parents are talking about
is money. When they were on a boat of Nick's
on a late at his lake, house of Nick Saban's
that the boat was over five hundred thousand dollars. The
(41:41):
audacity to say all that the parents are talking about
is the money. What guys America's got to get this
straight and get it right. I'm sorry, point blank, I'm sorry,
but I'm not ever going to bite my tongue. If
someone would have mentioned ten years ago, teen years ago
that they were being paid too much money and it
(42:03):
was getting carried away, then I would cut him some
slick coach beard. And I used to catch you know what,
before you came on the show, people used to say, honestly,
any they called in, they don't anymore.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Uh, the athletes get sweatsuits and tennis shoes, and I'm
not playing. A caller called in and said that, yes
he did. The athletes get sweatsuits and tennis shoes. So, guys,
Nick Saban, slow, your row guardrails will be put on
something that.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
The NCS doublea sho had done a long time ago,
which was your boss, you're a president and your athletic director,
who is a part of this at Alabama just like Kentucky,
just like Louisville, just like Indiana.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
But when you all see that from coaches, please understand,
they're full of you know what, period point blank, and
I would tell him to his face it trusts me.
There's no way a coaches made over one hundred million
dollars coaching young men can say that anything's out of
line because the kid might be getting five hundred thousand.
(43:04):
Thank you, Shennon, and he talk to you all tomorrow.
I have a great day, he sports radio, God willing,
and I'll be back. Bye bye,
