Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome back to E Sports Radio. It is July the first,
twenty twenty five. If you didn't know it, it is
Tuesday in the Louisville area. And I did say July
the first. July the fourth is Friday. We'll have a
fantastic holiday, a lot of barbeq. But it is July
(00:21):
the first. It is Tuesday in the Louisville area. It's
raining and it's time to get to work. So welcome
back to the show. This is Esports Radio. It's seven
ninety WKRD, and of course phone numbers five zero two
five seventy nine hundred. That's five zero two five seven
one seventy nine hundred. To get the business out of
(00:42):
the way. Yes, we've got the boss again, Gus. Welcome back.
Appreciate you sitting in again today. Shannon has to take
a vacation every now and then, we have to let
shed and get a little break. And he was a
little nervous anyway, Gus, because I told him was about
to get in the ring with him, and he's just
a little nervous, so he had to get away for
a little bit. But he'll be back next week, so
(01:02):
he'll come back stronger. I think he's working out right
now to make sure he can hold his title because
I told him I wanted the title. Gus. I said,
I'm coming for the title. He says, well, you can't
do it talking. I have to take it. So that's
where the problem started. Gus, I can talk about the title,
I just can't take it. So I said, okay, I
(01:24):
think we're fair. But anyway, Shannon's on vacation. We've got
Gus sitting in and Gus, you got my younger son
on the other line. Let's bring Anthony to the show. Anthony,
how are you.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I'm doing good. I was waiting for you to finally
get through the introduction, and we can tell you've been
on vacation. We forgot what day it was. You didn't
know it was July. You didn't know it was raining
this morning. So we're gonna give you the benefit of
the doubt. Act like we didn't hear all of that.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
And it's seven mins.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
I heard some hesitation in there.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I don't I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
The hesitation was this. We're on it downhill slop. Christmas
is around the corner, says seventh month after And I'm
just trying to tell you I'll be saying jingle bells
here soon.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
I'm telling you, say you stay close. The more you
say closer to Christmas is more that the closer. I'm
getting almost being thirty, So I don't know if I
like the sound.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Of that BC alternative. Just keep getting old of a
younger fella. But I understand it is what it is,
and I'm getting older. But you know what we do.
We can't have a gallon hold. We've got a gallon
hold who is old. I try to give him his respect, Anthony.
He's deserved it, he's earned it. But the man call
(02:35):
me so many four letter words, Anthony. Honestly, if he
doesn't make it to Vegas next year for the summer League,
I'm gonna Whippie Gus do me a favor. Bring on
mister intellectual, mister Alfred Butch Beard to the show.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Coach Beard, how are you I like? I like the
way Anthony opened up this show. Okay, yes, Anthony, he's old,
he's see now and you have to carry him from
here on in?
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Okay? Is that right? And see that that's right?
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (03:08):
For a person that can't walk around the block, Coach Beard,
you're talking a lot of stuff. That's all.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Well, yes, yes, I am old, Yes, this is true.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
You will take a beef down and you don't make
it to Vegas next year. Lord, Yes, Coach, here's here.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Here's the thing, Jerry, we're gonna do that. I will
be there next year. But here's here's what I'm gonna
tell you. You tell God your plans so he can
laugh at you. Now. Okay, so let's hope that we're
both healthy enough and I'll see you in Vegas. Okay,
(03:46):
there you go.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
That's the best way to put it, Coach, Beer, we
have to do that. You know, a young fellow, Anthony,
he's just young, coach, so we just have to live
with him. He's young, he does understand what he has
not gotten up in the morning Coach and said, what's
wrong with my back? What happened to my knee?
Speaker 3 (04:05):
I don't know who you.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
I don't know who you're speaking for right now, because
I felt.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Like that.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Numerous times.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
You're in trouble, then tell you.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
But if I.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Tell my friends, I was like, I'm aging too quickly.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
You're in Let me get you, Let me get you
some asp for cream right away, down.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Being never hurt.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
You're feeling it already, young fella. You're in serious trouble.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
It was those four day workouts we have when I was.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Eight years old.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Uh okay, okay, okay.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
That's all, and let me chase It is funny though,
because you're the old people we do get. I've got okay.
Of course. You know my man Ryan, Coach Beard, you're
a guy too. He's old.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yes, Coach, his.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Back, his bag's giving him problems. I'm like, tough guy.
It happens to us. All. Aging is not for sissys.
That's all I tell people. That's what it is. Aging
is not for sissy's. Coach Beer, it gets hurt every
that is. It takes me ten minutes to get moving, Coach,
it's pitiful. It takes me ten minutes to get movie.
(05:23):
If I had to tie my shoes in the first
ten minutes of getting out of the bed, Coach, it's
just over. It's over, Coach. It's not gonna have to
It's embarrassing. But anyway, we're gonna move on. Coach. We
appreciate you sitting in with us today. I just want
to let everyone know what's gonna transpire. Gust. This will
be another one of our best stuff, so I want
you to cut it up. We will be stopping at
(05:45):
the fifteen thirty and forty five guys like we should,
but there are things that we do need to let
people know. Anthing he's gonna do the national news, Coach.
Of course, you're a tennis fanatic. You've got ten everything's
gonna get into Wimbledon and I think Cocoa Golf Place today,
so he's gonna cover that. We're also gonna cover some
of the NBA news. There's a lot of things going
(06:07):
on in your league, Coach Beard, so we're gonna cover
a lot of that that's in your wheelhouse. Also, we're
going to talk about University of Louisville and naming the
street after Tom Jeurch. Congratulations to Tom and Mayor green
Berg who made that happen for Tom and well deserved,
Coach Beard. I've got a well deserved if you want
(06:27):
to look at it in that aspect. I did last Wednesday,
give them my interpretation, that's all. I just wanted to
make sure that both sides were told, coach, and I did.
I just got one question. Being honest. Wednesday Street gonna
be named after Andre McGee. M it's not never gonna happen.
(06:48):
But I'm gonna leave that alone. Coach. You know, the
guy just sent money back from another job. He loved
Louisville so much. But that's okay, forget it, I mean,
forget it, Coach, That's all right. So anyway, but we're
gonna let you talk about that a little bit, and
then also the neglecting of your teammates. So we've got
a lot that we're gonna touch today, coach. But here's
(07:10):
the first piece I have for you. Where are you
right now? Coach? See we speak about you, George. You
go from Phoenix to back to New York to I'm
going back to Phoenix. Where are you now? Coaching on
the movement of Coach Beard? So where I find you
when they're mad at you?
Speaker 4 (07:30):
Where to find Well, I'm in the New York, New
Jersey area. Let's put it like that, okay, And I'll
be going back to Scottsdale a little bit later this summer.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
For good.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
If I can't take I can't take I can't take
the winners here in the Northeast, So I'll go back there.
I think I mayna end up, you know, moving back
out that Jersey for good.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
You're gonna leave this no more Germans talk about.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
No, no, no. Ever since i've been back, it's been crazy,
you know, the traffic and all that. I was too
I was too used to getting around everywhere in twenty minutes.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Oh yes, it's quite different than Phoenix, Coach Beard. But
you know you're New York City Slicks. You're a break
Ridge County boy that left you in New York City.
That's who you are. You said you're never leaving that rock,
the rock they named it twice. You used to tell
me new York, New York. That's what you used to
tell me, Coach Beard. So now you're sticking around.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah. It's for young people. It's
not for old people.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
That's a fact. That is the fact. So it's seven thirteen, Coach.
But we're gonna get to break when we come back.
We're gonna throw it to Anthony, let him knock out
the national news, and then from there, Coach, we'll get
into the show. This is East Sports Radio. We've got
Coach Beard on the line. Yes, you've got Seo Jerry
Seenaw Jerry E's on the line, and Anthony will give
us the National News through the break, Gus take us away,
(09:03):
Welcome back to E Sports Radio seven to eighteen. Of
course it is Tuesday, it is July the first, twenty
twenty five. I've got Alfred Bitch Beard on the line,
Coach Beard and Anthony Eaves. Anthony, We're coming to you first.
I want you to let everyone know what's going on
in national news today.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
So obviously we got locked going on. Obviously getting into
Wimbledon will be coaches Beard actually his his forte. But
more so I want to get into it is a
lot of the blockbuster trades that have happened in the
NBA over the last thirty days. There's been a lot
of moves and I hon't see a lot of rays
of eyebrows. Remember just even a few months ago, when
Luca Donna's got traded to the Lakers middle of the season,
(09:44):
everyone had doubts of how the Bapports were going to
bounce back and how they were kind of tearing down
their organization enfranchise from what they had built up over
the last couple of years. But the looks of today
of how the Ross looks, they look like one of
the best teams in the NBA. So do we still
have those same doubts about the Dallas Mavericks GM or
do we feel like he's doing kind of a good
job right now. I think he's doing a good job.
(10:06):
I was one, We were the one of the few
when we talked about it agreed that the Luca Donna's
trade was a good move for the Mavericks in a
lot of senses. People said they were training their superstar
of the future. They didn't get a lot of really
what they wanted for him. Obviously, they got Anthony Davis,
who everyone thinks his injury prone. But I thought it
wasn't a good move because we said it before that
Luca is just kind of fat and a little bit
(10:28):
out of shape.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
And he is.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
He's a phenomenal basketball player. He is a great score,
but he has a lot of downside too that he
hasn't made improvements on since he's been in the NBA.
If you look at from when he came into the NBA. Now, yes,
he's gonna gain weight. He's gonna gain size, that's natural,
but the weight that he is gaining is more so
just kind of like he's just eating good American food
and not really working out to compensate that and you know,
(10:51):
down the road five six years from now, that plays
a huge factor in how his performances, his reliability on
and off the court, and it's just one of the
things that I think that the GM of the Mavericks
didn't want to take a big risk on, and that's
one of the big things. So obviously, we have the
Kevin Durant trade to Houston. Obviously he got traded for
Jalen Green Dyllon Brooks in a twenty twenty five first
round pick plus multiple second rounders Michael Porter Jr. And
(11:14):
Cam Johnson and a twenty thirty two pick just got
traded off from the Nuggets to the Brooklyn Nets. So
there's a lot of moves from there as well. Isaaca
Coral was traded for Lonzo Ball, so Lonzo Ball will
be a Capitaloyer next year. Aasaka Corral is going to
the Bulls. CJ mccollon got traded back to the Wizards.
Use of Nurkid is going to the Charlotte Hornets. Colin
(11:35):
Suxton and use of Nurkids was just a straight player
player swap. Trades from the Jazz to the Utah Jazz
to the Charlotte Hornets as well. And then D'Angelo Russell,
who actually I was just with over this past weekend,
just signed a two year, thirteen million dollar deal with
the Dallas Mavericks as well, which we think he'll be
their starting point guard until Kyrie Irving is healthy, or
if he does a phenomenal job in that role, he
(11:56):
could stay the starting point guard. We don't really know.
We've seen Delo add his highs and lows before, but
we've seen him have potential to be a starting point
guard in the NBA. And that's not a question about it, right.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
No question. So, coach Beard. A lot of things going on.
Of course, your tennis is going on, and Coco will
be playing today. We know you'll be watching that. But
now let's get into a little bit of this NBA
the movement. Let's start with Niko Harris, the general manager
of the Dallas Mavericks coach. When he made the trade
to the Lakers, everyone went crazy. I didn't coach Beard.
(12:31):
I'm an Anthony Davis fan. And Kyrie Irving can play.
He was taking second fiddle. Now he's injured. We know
injured is knee, but he will come back. He is
a top line scorer. I like the trade. So now
that we've seen that the Dallas Mavericks have Cooper Flagg
fell into their laft, Dangelo Russell's going to be helping
to fill in. They got a great roster. They got PJ. Washington.
(12:53):
I mean he's Kentucky boy. People didn't even know that
dad's from Kentucky. Coach Beard, I like their team.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
What do you think, Well, their team is there. Yeah,
their team is a little bit better than a lot
of people who would think because of what happened in
the draft. You know, Cooper makes it a situation where
they become maybe a contender to get into the playoffs.
They weren't supposed to get into the playoffs this year
(13:20):
with you know, with Kyrie being injured. So that's that
that that was, that's a good thing. Let me let
me try to say say something to the fans that
are you know, Lucas Lucas fans. Okay, the reason why Dallas,
the reason why Dallas traded him, and of course Anthony
(13:40):
said said it best when he talked about his health
and and and the way that he has trained to
get himself ready to play basketball professionally. Uh, it's really
crazy to invest possibly seventy seventy five million dollars, okay,
and a guy that you don't know whether or not
(14:03):
he can play, you know, the thirty five or forty
minutes when he should be at the at the peak
of his career. So to me, it was a good
It was a good move by both teams and maybe
not have been popular, but it was a good move.
He really was.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
They had reached the finals, though, coach, that's why everyone
was so upset. Had taken to the finals. So that's why. Yeah,
but that.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
But Jerry, when when they lost, when they lost to Boston,
I mean, Tatum and Brown went at him until the
point where he quit. He wasn't physically able to finish
it off. And so I mean, unless he understands that,
you know, he's he's always going to be a phenomenal scorer,
and he's going to do some things because he's you know,
(14:53):
he has to control the ball. But does his game
equate into winning a championship? I don't know, and I
don't think he knows. You know, we see now that
he's lost some weight this summer, and he looks good,
and he looks good, so only time will tell and
the other thing we don't know, you know, that thing
(15:14):
that's in your chest, that thing that pumps hart, you know,
the heart. We don't know what kind of art he's got.
We really don't. We'll soon find out, though, we'll soon
find out. You know what the biggest thing had happened
last night and all of this free agency and everything else,
was what the Nets are doing. I can't even believe
(15:38):
the Nets traded. You know, they trade Port. They trade
for Porter out of Denver and they give him Cam Johnson. Now,
who the hell do the Nets? Who do they? Who
do they tell their fan base to come and see.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Because they drafted three young guards. They're trying to do
the old Why.
Speaker 4 (15:59):
I don't want to hear that they had five They
had five picks they drafted, they had five picks. They
basically drafted four guards and a big guy okay, and
Wolfe was the big guy that they drafted. Okay, at
the end. So it to me, I think they're going
to sell the ball club. I think they're selling.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
They're starting it over. They're trying to do a coach okay, no, no, no,
three years ago. Okay, see won twenty two games three
years ago okay, okay, games three years ago and their
World champions they're trying to duplicate that with young players.
That's what they're trying to do. Coach Jerry, I say
(16:40):
they're going to be successful, but that's what they're Jerry.
Speaker 4 (16:43):
Jerry will have this conversation okay, okay in a year
and I can tell you right now there's no way
with the way that roster is constructed that they are
building anything. It doesn't make any sense with the kids
that they that they drafted.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Coach stopped. Listen, you were part of this. When you
all said the drafting these young players, you were part of.
Don't say you weren't. Yes, you were, yes, no, no, no, no no.
You drafted Yanka dar Ray. I'm not gonna let you
forget Coachy with help, he told me. Yinka was on you.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
Yes, I know, twenty four hours, twenty four hours with
the with the organization. You're right, go ahead, yes, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
Yeah, but here's the problem you're saying that. Well, I'm
gonna give you some examples of the NBA. Anthony and
I were talking about it. You have young men, coach
being drafted with the fourteenth pick out of where did
he come from, Man, You came from Arizona.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
Arizona, Arizona, Arizona, Arizona.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Average six points. Come on, guys, there's no way the
NBA drafted player. They have six point five points a game,
four point run rebounds, and Anthony, Coach Beard and all
our friends. In college, he played nineteen minutes out of
forty and he was almost a lottery pick. So, Coach Beard,
(18:14):
when you're saying they have no rhyme or reason, a
lot of teams don't. How does that happen? I'm just
asking he couldn't play twenty minutes a game in college
and he's your first round kid.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
I don't know how and why they did what they
did there last night. As I was we were talking earlier. Yeah,
we were talking earlier. I said, I was flicking around
and on ESPN, I was watching Arizona and BYU play.
That's a nice kid, doesn't hit you with anything. But
(18:49):
I'm trying to figure out, how do you draft the
kid like you say, as the fourteenth pick averaging six
points a game. He hasn't even figured out how to
average ten points a game. Now, first of all, you
got to have some offense. Yeah, you got to have
some offense and you know, ability in order to play
at the next level. I thought, I don't know, I
(19:12):
have no you know, I have no idea what they're
looking for now. I really don't other than the fact
you run fast, jump high, yes, and you got a
great body.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
I don't know, and be nineteen years old. Coach, he
was this old, Anthony. He's the seventh leading scorer on
a team that was fourteen and six in the Big twelve,
twenty four and thirteen. So Anthony, you're young. You tell
me why Why did the San Antonio Spurs invest that
kind of money and a kid that could not play
(19:41):
half a college game and the team wasn't great. I'm sorry.
There may be Arizona fan out there, go kick rocks.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
I brought it up to you yesterday when we're at
home and kitchen it and it just kind of threw
me off. I said, I said, stuff like this is
opening up the door for bad players.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
It really is.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Because when you bring up arguments and you bring up
future picks that get into these same situations, they're like, well,
he only aversed six points a game, why are they
drafting him? And they're like, well, Spurs drafted Carter Bryant
last year, so I mean kind of it gives almost
anybody an opportunity to get drafted now because they're drafting,
I hate to say it, they're drafting such weak players
in the draft, Like I'm gonna be completely honest with you.
(20:21):
I play. And the thing is, he's not the only one.
There's other players. We talked about. The other kid that's
supposed to be coming from Washington sit State, I think
his name is Cedric. He played six games and he
got injured, so his is a little bit different situation.
In his four out of six games, he had twenty plus.
I think in one to two games he had thirty plus.
I said, those are great numbers. College twenty or thirty
points in sixty games is still great numbers. He averaged
(20:43):
like twenty four and a half a game. But in
the same sense, I'm like, he did this against non
conference opponents. Your first six games, you're playing party, the
weakest team you'll ever play in your entire life. You're playing,
especially being in Washington, you're playing you're probably playing State, Portland, State,
Eastern Washington. Like you're playing low level Division I schools.
If you're any type of NBA talent or supposed to be,
(21:06):
you're supposed to do that. It's not really standout numbers
to go a top ten pick in the draft. I'm
just gonna be completely honest with you. And I said
it even before, and I said, this is a little irrelevant,
but it kind of makes sense, and it's gonna be funny.
Next year they're drafting a guy from Arizona whoevers six
and a half points a game, who is gonna have
a similar stat line. Who's going to Arizona this year?
(21:27):
I mean Bryce James, Brice James is going to Arizona
and he's gonna have that exact same stat line and
then be like, oh, he's an NBA player, He's his
last name is James le Bronnie. He's gonna do the
exact same thing. Like, and I'm not trying to knock
the kid, but he averaged eight points a game at
Sierra Kenyan. His all time scoring points in high school
is like two hundred and forty eight. I'm gonna be
(21:48):
completely honest. I did that in probably seven or eight games.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Okay, now I'm gonna throw another one at you that
people should know acc country here in the Liev Drake Pile,
I don't care what you say. I had to go
and look him up. I knew he went to North Carolina.
I had no idea who he was. He's a twenty
second pick every seven point nine points a game, Coach Beard.
I watched North Carolina. I watched him and Louis defeated them.
(22:14):
I had to go look him up. He's a twenty
second pick, seven point game.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
I did the same thing and r J. Davis, I'm
not gonna say, and he was phenomenal, but he went
undrafted and he led the team. There's a lot there's
a lot of kids. Eric Dixon from Villanova leaves NCA
and scoring all time, goes undrafted.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
Points a game.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
They're taking eighteen points a game at five points because
of potential upside, NBA, I hate to say it, Please
stop drafting up an upside because ninety percent of these
guys don't even work out with upside. You might as
well draft the guys who come in to have some
scoring experience, know how to play in the offense, or composed,
have NBA ready bodies. These those seventeen eighteen year olds
are not NBA ready bodies. That's why half of them
(22:54):
gets into the G League and don't make it, or
the other half come in have the immediate superstars and
there's a lot of pressure. Only a few of them
really turned out to be you know, the kid cunninghams
oh yeah, Day struggled a little bit.
Speaker 4 (23:06):
You know.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
There's the guys that come in that don't come in
and just hit those superstar roles. Sga didn't hit it
when he first came in with the Clippers. It took
him some time too.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
It's hard.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
Like Kate Canningham is one of the few. Trey Young
is one of the few that come in and had
to lead a bad team and turn them around to
make them halfway decent. The other guys don't pan out.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
It's really hard. Guys are at seven thirty two. I'm
staying on task because we're gonna cut this show up
when we come back. We'll continue with this NBA thought process.
So Coach Beard again, you can't tell me that the
Nets are not trying to build for the future. That's
what all they'll be drafting. They'll be drafting juniors in
high school soon, saying we'll get them when they get
out the general managers have lost their minds. It's the
(23:46):
sports radio. It's seven thirty three. If you got to
be to work at eight, you need to be leading.
Be careful. Loved ones are out there. We'll talk to
you all after the break. This is a thousand followers,
Welcome by he Sports Radio seven thirty five. And guys,
I need you to check for me because I wasn't sure,
(24:07):
but I haven't heard my town and Country commercials. I
think something's happened. We may have lost some, so you
have to check that for me. Thus, police, so welcome
back to the show. Of course, is the sports radio
phone overs five year two, five seventy nine. And Coach Beer,
we've brought some examples to you, and you were talking
about your league, that your league has gone astray. So
(24:30):
Drake Powell is one, and I don't care. I know
people in Louisville had no idea who Drake Powell was
when they said the fourth player selected out of the
ACC was Drake Powell. I know people are like, who
is that? Where did he play? And I had to
do the same thing, Coach, I really did. So now
we understand that the league is taking anyone. What's going on.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
If I will put in my two cents, I will
say more so they're taking for kids coming out of
high school and college more so now they're taking players
at they're peaking, and they're taking them at the wrong time.
The players that are hitting their peaks going later into college,
that are making those strides and making improvements. You're almost
(25:17):
late behind your window of when you're supposed to be
hitting your peak to have a chance to play in
the NBA. The NBA now they want you to be
hitting your peak junior, senior year of high school, a
little just a tad bit, a freshman year of college,
and you're a lottery pick. And that's the only thing
I don't like. They're wanting you to pee pretty much
a potential to be a superstar out of high school.
(25:37):
And that's hard to do for a lot of kids.
I wasn't the greatest person, you know, the greatest basketball
player in high school. There, I was pretty I was
pretty good. But to be like, I want to take
myself and give myself a chance at the next level
or try to develop in college, I would have had
no chance. If they were just taking off of just
period of tilling out of high school. And that's kind
of what they're doing now. They go more off what
their high school rankings, is your potential and upside, and
(25:59):
you go to collere like, well, as long it's not
just I get the worst, and that's what I thought.
They're like, it's not just the worst. We'll give them
opportunity in a chance. But they're taking six points a
game now, so at this point they kind of do
just take whatever, Like as long as you're doing to
have a high school and you go to a DC
school and play a little bit, that's all they got.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
You, coach Bear, what do you think, Well.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
I think Anthony has hit it, you know, pretty squarely.
Everything is on potential Jerry at this at this stage
in the NBA, which I don't get either. It's hard
for me to believe that they look at a twenty one,
twenty two year old as being over the heel and
not ready to play in the NBA, but they would
(26:44):
take a seventeen eighteen year old kid and put him
in the G League and you know, hope that he
you know, he becomes a player. It's crazy and I'm
going to go back to this team that you know
that got me into business. As a head coach. I
have no idea what the Brooklyn Nets are thinking other
(27:08):
than that, you know, they're gonna follow the little coaches
in about twenty games into the season because there's no
way he's winning, and the fan base, you know, New
York is fickled. They they will quit coming. And when
that guy starts losing money, you wait and see, everybody's
gonna leave there. It doesn't that that particular. What they did,
how they drafted, and even the last move, you know,
(27:31):
this free agency move where they traded Porter for you know,
for for Johnson, doesn't make any sense to me other
than fact I think they're gonna sell the ball club.
I really do. I think they're gonna sell the whole thing.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
Well again, coach, the Nets haven't been good in forever.
They tried Kevin Durant irving situation. They're a decent coach,
but they haven't been good in forever. It's just going
to be the Nets. They've been the Nets for almost forever.
So come on, I don't know why you're surprised. I
don't even know why you hung up on the Nets. Coach.
(28:07):
Let's get to it. We have got acc eight players
were drafted coach in the first two rounds. Four in
the first round, three of them were Duke players. Four
in the second round, two of them were duke players.
So Duke had five of the eight drafted out of
the ACC. What do you think the ACC has to
do to improve its product, coach?
Speaker 4 (28:30):
Well, now, it all depends. Now, it all depends on
you know, how they play the game. I mean, ACC
doesn't play the most exciting basketball college basketball in this country, okay,
and the coaches are going to have to do a
(28:51):
better job of trying to play a different brand of basketball.
I have no idea of what the ACC has in mind.
I do know this, I'm hoping that you know what
the University of Louisville has done after their season last year.
(29:13):
I'm hoping that all the moves that Kelsey and am
has made, I'm hoping that it all works out for them.
Can anybody explain to me? Can anybody explain to me
how you turn a roster over in college and your
fan base knows who they are. And I'm not just
(29:33):
talking about Louisville, I'm just talking about college in general.
How do you how do you as a fan base
social media?
Speaker 1 (29:40):
You must follow social media. You don't, so you can't.
But if you're on social media, I sent you clip
to Michael Brown. I've been sending them to you all summer.
If you're on social media, you'll be able to see
these players the best that you can. You'll be able
to go and watch them play. Same thing in the
University of Kentucky and you'll be able to watch them
play and and developed. But you have to be on
(30:01):
social media so that you can get an opportunity to
watch him play. Well. Coach, you know it's gonna be
very difficult. It's gonna be difficult, that's all. But I
mean it happened last year. We will turn to his
roster over Kentucky did also well. They had great teams,
great fans support coach. They find if you're a fan,
you will follow and find out. My cousin Stan Evans
(30:22):
is a huge level fan. He knows all the players
now today and all about the coach. Fans do follow.
You don't follow like that, coach, but fans do. They
know who's on.
Speaker 4 (30:32):
Their fans san follow Okay, fan fanatics, fans, okay, all right, okay, coach, Okay, I.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
Think people make sixty million dollars a year because people
do follow. That's why they make sixty million. You're not
paying them that money. It's not because of you. It's
because the people that buy the jerseys and enjoy the games,
they do follow, coach. So now that's that was just
the old thought process. Coach they know, and I mean
mikeil Brown, coach Beer. They say he could be the
(31:01):
greatest guard ever to play it live. Now that's a
huge statement because we've had Butch Beards, Jim Prices, Darryl Griffiths,
Junior Bridgman, Bradford Smith. Okay, I mean coach Russ Smith.
We've had some good ones. They're saying this young man
could be the best one ever.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
What do you think, Well, I you know, somebody always
sets a standard for some whatever. Okay, I'm hoping that
he I'm hoping that he is the greatest guard ever.
But you know, the people that you just mentioned did
it over a period of one to two years or
sometimes three. Okay, Now he's gonna do it, yeah yeah,
(31:45):
but he's gonna do it over six months. And that's
the reason why I'm say I don't know how you
can you know, how you can judge this hell. I
could have a great six months and you'd say he's
the greatest thing since Stilp Milk. Then the following year struggles.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
That doesn't change. You have to coach beer. Those days
are over. Three year players, it's over. You gotta get
over it. He's gotta win it.
Speaker 4 (32:14):
Carry carry Arry. There's there there there there there there
there there there, Derek. Yeah, longevity has something to do
with how your career is. Okay, you can't you can't
be a you can't be it. You can't be a
twenty you can't you can't be you can't be a
(32:35):
twenty eight, twenty nine game wonder. Okay, and and have
a great career, okay.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Cold you've complained about both. You've complained about the players
that say six years. Now you're complaining about the players
that stay one year. Which one do you want? And
you have?
Speaker 4 (32:52):
I didn't Hey, I said that.
Speaker 1 (32:56):
Coach, if they're good enough, they're leaving, they're gonna say
six months.
Speaker 4 (32:58):
I Jerry, I understand that.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
I said, judge it with championships, coach. He I didn't
put this on the young man. I'm telling you what
they're putting in social media, and they're saying he could
be the greatest guard ever, which means he's got to
win a championship. I'm not saying it's fair, coach. I'm
just giving it to you, that's all.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
Well, do you all set to the standard, you guys
the eighty team set the standards will winning the championship.
So you know you can put your little you can
put your name in there and say, hey, look, he's
got to be as good as me along with dyl Okay,
he's got to hierograph.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
He's got to do it. Yeah again eighty six, twenty thirteen. Though,
we're going to get to that, I mean, coach, he's
got to do that. Now, we got to get to
We've got to call him and we're gonna get him on,
and we're gonna get the break and we're gonna come
back and talk about in the West censored Tom Jeurchy deal.
So bring him a caller on, please, AC Welcome to
sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (33:54):
Hit me quick a morning. Hey guys going dor it,
good morning, they got going.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
They're good.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Coach Beard, it's been a it's been a long time, man.
Thank you so much for coming. I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
I just don't get up amore. Okay, well you have to.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
You have to because you know miss Raves is doing
the show and I'm the guy who's carrying the load.
I don't need know load management. Brother, God, thank you
so much for sitting.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
Hey.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
I love when when mister Eves has all the co hosts,
you know, like from the from the past. You remember
that twelve o'clock you you guys come on every week.
The education, the knowledge. You know what's so funny about
the heart rank winning the rings? Let me ask you, flushing,
miss Rais, did you win the NBA Championship as the
as the player of the NBA did you ever win
(34:43):
the championship? Not an NBA coach, not in in the
NBA the white would someone talk about championship and championship
where he never won one? Miss Raves? Come on, be
really chas any double A?
Speaker 2 (35:01):
But that was.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Oh my god, mister, that was anty double A. I mean,
come on, think about it. A little kid in his diapers.
They can win the n C double A championship. Come on,
and championship question? They gonna paying the collar? You got
(35:28):
the college, Well you better start paying. What's your question?
What's your question? What's your question? What have I won?
Speaker 1 (35:41):
So far.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
You do understand I'm a certified bona fide haters. Wherever
I go, I'm winning somewhere. Man, you guys, this is
what's happened to Coach gear Let me tell you. Let
me tell you something. Every station I go with in
two weeks, I've become a hater. You know what I say.
(36:03):
I love it, But this is what I'm gonna say.
I'm gonna hang off. I his brother Anthony's listen, brother Anthony.
I hear a big Kobe fan. This is what you
guys have to understand. Eleven is more than six. Case close, Halla.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
Halla, break. I have to recover from ACS call. I
need to go take a shower. East Sports Radio. I'll
be back in a minute. Welcome back to the Sports
Radio seven fifty one. Coach Beer, I'm gonna throw it
to you, but I was speaking with the gus about
(36:37):
the last since two thousand and seven forward with our
program Coach Kelsey Josh Hurd. I'm huge fans of both,
huge fans of both. Done a great job, but I
still don't think that in this city, no one's taken
responsibility for from two thousand and seven until seventeen eighteen,
it just doesn't seem to happen. So I asked Gus
(36:58):
and guests heady your quote. So, Gus, I want you
to tell people, but you told me about that which
success has failure?
Speaker 2 (37:06):
Success has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan.
Speaker 1 (37:14):
Very good, thank you. So, Coach Beer, that is so appropriate.
That's just so appropriate. You know that's Kennedy. That's so
appropriate because coach, we know all the thousand fathers, success
has failure. Who he's an orphan stands by himself a lot. So, coach,
what do you think from Jersey in honor? And again
(37:36):
the city still never has done what it should have
done for West until you know first class guy. Come on,
Coach Beer, two time state champion, mister but sixty three
sixty four mister basketball, one of two players that MVP and.
Speaker 4 (37:55):
The other year.
Speaker 1 (37:57):
Frome on. Coach, I mean sixty one hundred and eighty
one points in three years, fifteen hundred rebounds when he
left your junior year, you are ranked second in the country,
only behind UCLA. What's the deal, coach? Tell me you
got it?
Speaker 4 (38:13):
Well, Jerry, I you know about four years ago there
was a group of us we had what we call
Memory Lane. And this was after Wes had passed away,
and we were talking in terms of trying to get
the university to honor West in the right way. Okay,
(38:34):
now it came back that the family didn't want to
do it, and blah blah blah, blah blah. And I
kept telling the people to be the powers to be
at that particular time at the university that this has
nothing to do with the family as much as it
has to do with what he's done for the university.
(38:56):
The university's basketball program was a regional power before he
stepped foot on that campus, and the minute he stepped
foot on that campus, it made them a national power.
During my time at the University of Louisville, there were
only three big men that they talked about, and that
(39:18):
was Kareem which was leu Ale Sender at the time.
Then Alvin Hayes. After Houston upset UCLA down in the
whether the Superdome, and West uncol and West unfol and
so and he kept us, you know, he kept the
university in the spotlights. That has to mean something to
(39:42):
the university. I know that the people there don't even
understand that, but when you look at what he did
for the university by attending the university, they should take
a close look. I was watching over the weekend the SEC.
(40:06):
You know, history of the SEC and Kentucky trying to
recruit West in sixty four and then trying to recruit
me in sixty five. That now that's in the SEC's history.
What does Louisville have to What do they have that
says that West Uncle meant something to them? Nothing in
(40:29):
the city and the city that hasn't done anything for him.
We're talking about a local kid. We're talking about a
local kid who went and really put it on the map,
put Louisville on the map, and Louisville, the University of
Louisville would not have the success that they had had
in the seventies if it wasn't for West Uncil and
(40:52):
myself because we helped show the kids in the seventies
that hey, this is the place to come and play ball.
I also want the people who are listening to understand
in the sixties, sixty five through sixty nine, when I
was there, the University of Louisville went out and recruited
(41:15):
one black player a year, one black player a year, okay,
and then they've got braived and recruited Henry Bacon and
Jim Price in nineteen seventy.
Speaker 1 (41:31):
I mean twenty seconds, coach, twenty seconds.
Speaker 4 (41:35):
The city and the University of Louisville needs to readdress
what they need to do for West until other than
put his number up on the wall, he's got to
have something. He's got to have something on that university.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
I agree with you, EA Sports Radio, have a great date.
We're out, lovey, thank your coaching.
