Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome back to EVE Sports Radio. Yes, it is.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
July the twenty fourth, twenty twenty five. It is Thursday
in the Little area.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Beautiful day.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
It's going to be extremely hot, so be safe and hydrate.
My phone number here is five zero two five seven
one seventy nine hundred. That's five zero two five seven
one seventy nine hundred. This is Sports Talk seven ninety KRD.
I was on time yesterday and I'm on time today.
Don't believe my son and I just had computer problems.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
But welcome back to the show. We've got Shannon behind.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
The glass, and of course he's loading something for us
that is really, really funny.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
You all have to winever it's ready, Shannon, you let
me know.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Ret lastly hip football coach, We're already lastly hip football
coach at SMU. He had I thought he turned into
friend Sandford. I want you all to listen and tell
me what you think.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
I think.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
By myself and our team and our staff, my program
learns that it really is every week in the ACC.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
You can't have an off week where you're gonna get lead.
It doesn't matter if you're playing at Clinston.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
It doesn't matter if you're playing whoever that last place
team is at home.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
If you have an off week, if you play like
we did in the playoff games, you're probably gonna lose,
you know. I mean, look at our Duke game. That
was a miracle we won. We went out and turned
it over six times. We should have lost, and that
was a good team. And so it's just the weekend
week out.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
If that's the league you want to be in, that's
where you want to be.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
I mean, you look at our league.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
We had like four ten win teams, two playoff teams
of a handful of nine one teams, thirteen bowl teams.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
I mean read, there's just not a.

Speaker 6 (01:33):
Lot of easy wins on the schedule.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
And there's other leagues that claim depth.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
But like the SEC's had the same six schools when
the championships, it's nineteen sixty four, the same six. Not
a single one has been different since nineteen sixty four.

Speaker 6 (01:50):
It's top heavy.

Speaker 7 (01:51):
To me, that's not the day.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yes, don't trust think he's friends Handford, Anthony, Welcome to
the show.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
How are you Anthony?

Speaker 7 (02:04):
I was.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yes, and that's red.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Lastly, if y'all didn't know he's the head football coach
at SNU and he was talking about how tough the
ACC was last year and how the SEC.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
He was trying to insinuate that it was top heavy. Anthony,
only six teams have ever woned from the SEC. Well,
there's only been two teams that have ever wanted from
the ACC, Clemson and Florida Cate. So I didn't get
his point other than it was comical, Anthony. Bottom line,
ACC football stinks. I don't know why they continued to lie.

(02:44):
It's just the facts. They must improve, period, point blank.
That's all an.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I don't get it, but I think Anthony Lyon is
just in right now.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
It's popular.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
People will say anything, So I just want people to
know the a SEC football. Boston College stinks, California they're awful,
Clemson has a chance to win it.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Duke they're fair.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Florida State was the worst team in college football last year.
Let's just be honest. Georgia Tech did play Georgia tough.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I give him credit.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Louisville is on the uptick. They are Miami eh NC
State stink. North Carolina. We know we've got the new coach.
I love it Belichick. They stink Pittsburgh and I SMU
never should have been in the college football playoffs, but
lucked in. Stanford stinks, Syracuse stink, Virginia stink, Virginia Tech stink.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Wait for a stink period, point blank.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
So anyway, I just thought i'd start the show off
with some correct information and lastlie, I know it's the
ACC media week that was comical. So An, man, we
got a big day. I'm gonna throw it to you
so that you can get out because we've got I
can't wait for my interviews today. I really can, Anthony.

(04:04):
I am so pumped interview when these two people coming on,
but especially my third son, I am so proud. I'm
telling you, So, what do we having national news?

Speaker 1 (04:12):
An?

Speaker 5 (04:15):
Yeah, so what the national news obviously got a couple
of things going on. Actually, a small landmark that I
do want to touch on is with showho Tomy. So
for those who don't know, Shoyo Timy is a picture
slaves batter for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is homeward
for his fifth and secutive game on Wednesday, tying a
Los Angeles Dodgers franchise record. The New York Nankee star

(04:36):
Aaron Judge was the last player at home in five
straight games, A comption that feast last year. Actually, and Honey,
who leads the National League with thirty seven home runs
homeward off Minnesota started Chris Paddick in the first inning
of a four to three walk off victory against the Twins.
That's a hard accomplishment to do five games in a row.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Mm hm Yes, Aaron Judge did it last year, Anthony,
And golly, it is a very very hard thing to
do five home runnings in a row. I would say
he's hot, Anthony. He is definitely Curry in baseball right now.
Everything he swings at is out of the park, that's
for sure. And a picture only Babe Ruth for that, Anthony.

(05:19):
And he was a starting pitcher in that streak. So
a lot of great things. So Hays has shown the
world that you can play both ways, Anthony, we have
gotten so much baseball has.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
You got to be a great hitter, you have to
be a great fielder, you have to be a great pitcher,
but you can't be all of them.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Well show he has shown us just can and for
all the young kids that inspire to do that, don't
let anyone tell you you can't.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
That's all be a picture, a hitter, a fielder, do
it all still Basis?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
So hey does that also, Anthony? So great job. You
have to just watch the Dodgers. The Yankees are struggling,
and we have to wait and see a lot of
good teams. I love the playoffs in their coming. Now
that the All Star break has done, Anthony, the games
means something and we'll start to watch them closely as
it continues.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
So continue with National News. What do we've got going
on for today's show?

Speaker 8 (06:12):
In Oh, we got all this stuff going on, and
we actually got your main man come on to give
us an inside scoop on the new hot rods coming
up for this year. And I'll let you introduce them
because I think you know a little bit more better
than I do.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Oh yeah, Dave Hubert, I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Day will be on today at seven forty Anthony and
Street Rides Nationals is unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Hot Rode Nationals, It's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Anthony will have fifteen thousand cars from forty eight states
here next weekend and you will see them start to
roll in driven some and on flatbeds. You'll start to
see them coming in Tuesday, Wednesday, Anthony getting ready for
the show. So it's going to be a fantastic weekend.
All the hotels will be taken. We'll let Dave Huber

(06:57):
get into the inertia of what goes on with that.
Some of these cars, the prices of some of these cars,
the paint jobs and engines of some of these cars, Anthony.
Some people have gone to unbelievable extreme extreme lens to
get these cars where they want them, Anthony, and they

(07:17):
have put a ton of money in them because these
things are very, very, very expensive. So we'll talk to Dave.
You were at seven forty and then well we got
who's coming on in seven to fifteen, Anthony, play the Duke.
You had some skills and he's got to be You've
got some skills.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
What do you think, Oh, yeah, of course you know.
We got our man man, Noel Smith coming on. We
got to talk about the new job that he's got
down to Tennessee State.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
Which is perfect.

Speaker 5 (07:45):
That means I can come down there to Tennessee and
I got someone to come to stay and I can
watch games. Got enough job down.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
There exactly, Shane.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
To make sure you get enough bedrooms because everyone's coming
to us games not just no his family. We're all
coming to Dover the games, so we're looking.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Forward to that.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
We'll have Nolan Smith on at seven point fifteen, so
we've got a lot of things going on. Now here's
the deal, Anthony. Yesterday I go to Kyby Harrison's birthday party.
We had a fantastic time. Great Whitlock gets all his
former teammates from his softball days together, some of his
high school teammates, family members of course Cindya's sister, and

(08:27):
we had a fantastic time. I mean a fantastic time.
But I'm going to tell you what Kyby was inspirational
and he spoke about from his heart. He told everyone
what he thought about them, the pieces of their lives
that he loved, had it riched his life, and he

(08:47):
just wanted to let us know that he appreciated all
the things we did. And it was just a heartwarming.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
For myself.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Ten years in these people had known Kybe Harrison. I'll
be seventy eight. Honestly, you all sixty years. I've only
known Kyby personally ten years. So to listen to him
talk to and talk about his relationship with his friends
was unbelievable and Cindy and the people that have helped
him at the Sam Swap by Selene where he's staying,

(09:19):
and it was just a great time. George Williams was
there taking pictures. We've got great photos. And there were
some letters written and read that at the appropriate time.
I'm gonna have him come on the show and read
them to you all. It was just a great time.
So Kyby love you like always my brother, and I'll

(09:40):
be about to see you again next week. So that
went great. Let me tell you what happened though, Anthony,
And whenever Nolan calls in for me, shn and just
let me know, we'll go straight. We'll go straight to break.
But something was given to me. I've got someone said
I've got a scrap book. And I didn't want to
say to the lady, I don't keep scrap books, Anthony.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
You know I don't. I throw things away. You know that.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
You all say, don't throw that away, Pops. I'm like,
who wants to see that junk? But anyway, she says
I have a scrap book. I said, okay, and I
was cordialing, nice, thank you. You may give it to
somebody who does want it. I said, okay.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
And I'm going to try to do that.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
As soon as I opened the scrap book, Anthony, my
eyes went, can't be. I had Kevin Christman. Everyone knows Kevin.
He's sports memorabilia guy, a really close friend of mine.
Sitting right to the left of me. Kevin said, can't be, Jerry,
that can't be what we think it is, Anthony.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
I just posted it.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
I sent it to you Monday, March the twenty fourth,
nineteen eighty NCAA Basketball Finals and the seat I won
row GC five.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
Now, guys, my numbers five just thick to this. Now,
I'm looking at this ticket, going this, this is crazy.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
First thing in the scrap book, Anthony, was a torn
ticket from my championship game forty whatever years ago, Anthony Dalli,
forty six.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Years ago. And it's the first thing in the scrap book.
I said, I'm keeping that, and I have now posted it.
You all can go see it Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. Guys.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Here's the phenomenal piece, Anthony. I want you to understand.
Fifteen dollars.

Speaker 9 (11:34):
Fifteen dollars, she had our one roe GC five. She's
lower level fifteen Anthony, fifteen dollars. I can't you believe
that it's just perfect condition? You all perfect condition, torn
halfway like they used to in the old days. And

(11:55):
I'm sitting here looking at it right now.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Guys.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
It's amazing. She has got this book of our progression
in the brackets to the championships. She's got pictures of
Darryl Griffith and all the newspaper articles in the LSU
and Pontre Wright, Wiley Brown with Wiley Brown. And you
wouldn't believe but Rudy Micklin's trying to steal the ball
from him. A great shiny player who played for LSU,

(12:21):
Roger Berkman, I mean myself, the great Derreck Smith. She's
got the stats. It was amazing, guys. I'm just looking
at this reminiscing. It is unbelievable. We're gonna have Nolan on.
Nolan's dad played thirty three minutes. You don't have to
understand he was seventeen years old when he was starting.

(12:41):
He was four for nine, five for nine at the
free throw line, ten rebounds, thirteen points. Jerry's played thirty
one minutes. And they've got this wrong because they've got
me three for three. I was three for five. Well maybe, Anthony.
They didn't count the shot. They got blocked, they got
pined on the backboard in the first and a half.
But they have me three for three. I was three

(13:03):
for five, three for five from the free throw line, Anthony,
nine points. Oh excuse me, No, that's why wrong game LSU.
Excuse me, that's not the UCLA game, that's the LSU game.
Those stats are correct. I didn't miss a shot the
LSU game, that is right, Anthony. Just unbelievable. So everybody
can go to my ex account and you will be

(13:23):
able to see that ticket from the nineteen eighty championship game.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
So shind what we're gonna do. We'll get the break.
I'll hit Nolan.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
He already notified me back this morning that he's up.
I'll make sure he's got the correct number, and Eve
Sports Radio will be back.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
In a second.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Welcome back to Eves Sports Radio. July twenty fourth, twenty
twenty five, Thursday. It is now seven twenty three, and yes, Anthony.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
We've got the one in only. So Anthony, we have
to do this right. We have to do this one right.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
I just have to first and foremost, we have got
the new head coach at Tennessee State University. But y'all
have to understand his father was a teammate of mine
at University of Louisville. And I just want everyone to
understand before I read all the accolades of Nolan Smith,
that I've said it before, and I almost say it

(14:18):
to you again. His dad came to Louisville at sixteen
and a half years old, graduated at twenty and half
years old, and had the most integrative of any person
I ever met my entire life, still today, without a doubt,
no nonsense, straight shooter. Nolan told a story about his
father when he got upset about not playing well and

(14:41):
through the basketball away on the boat, his father grabbed
him and said, first thing, and foremost, she must have
a great attitude. His dad told me that story when honestly,
Nolan was probably three three and a half feet tall, period,
point blank, little headstrong young man. Dad said, nobody to
get him ready, He's got it to know. Attitude takes

(15:01):
you everywhere. I started to read about Nolan's press conference, guys,
and that's the first thing Nolan says, and I'm not
lying to you, no, Then I'll never forget when Derek
told me that I tell people all the time. In college,
Derek and I Folt. We fought every day.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
We fought.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Everybody talking about were brothers like Derek Smith and Jerry's
fought every day every team. He had to tell you
that we get drafted, go pro and turn into the
best of friends. The best of friends. Monica's mother and
I and Sheila we played tennis in the summer. They
stayed in my place in Maryland. We'd go to their place.
I mean, it was just funny how things happened from

(15:38):
warriors to the very best of friends. I tell everyone
I made a mistake recruiting.

Speaker 6 (15:44):
I did.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
It was against the rules. I needed to find four
thousand dollars. I couldn't tell coach Beard because he would
have fired me.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
I called Derek.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
I said, Derek, you can't believe this, but I need
four thousand dollars. I had the money the next day. Guys,
way before Western Union and all the things. That's who
Derek was. That was the person that he was. He said,
he you got no problems. So I want you all
to understand that this young man comes from the very
very very best stock period point blank, of any individual

(16:17):
you'll ever know.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
So guys, all the basketball stuff.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Great Maryland basketball player, oh nineteen hundred points, a duke,
seventeenth on the scoring list, Consensus All Americans, First Team,
All a SEC First Team, All Everything, Academic All American,
gets the first round draft picked to Portland Trailblazers. Gets
into coaching twenty sixteen team special assistant. Promoted twenty eighteen

(16:47):
to Director of Operations and Player Development twenty twenty one.
A true assistant coach on the bench. Coach Yeshsky, Jay Shire,
Josh Shire, Kenny Payne, me hard Away, all the experience
work for numerous people, have seen different ways to do things.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
Now has his opportunity.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
I want you to know one thing, knowing I don't
care about any of that.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
Your dad is so proud of you, boy, I got
tears in my eyes.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
I'm just telling you, period, point blank, for the man
that you've become family member to Shy and we love her. Lo.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
No, you do the same thing your daddy did. Do
you know it? You do the little Nolan. You do that.
Don't you forget you do that tammering your own entire family.
You're new one. We love you all.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
We're coming to your games and now we can talk
to some sports. But knowing that I could care less
about the sports, I just know your daddy is so
proud of you. He wouldn't know what to do.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Nolan Smith, Welcome to the sports radio Hire.

Speaker 6 (17:47):
You, young man.

Speaker 7 (17:49):
I'm doing great, coach. I appreciate you. And oh man,
thank you for that amazing introduction.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
I'm just I'm humbled, I'm honored.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Just mean, this's position.

Speaker 7 (17:58):
It's been very amazing and special journey to get here.
And know when you become an assistant coach, you get
into this coaching well, no, you work, you work your
way up just to be in a position. So I'm
just I'm blessed.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
Yes, yes, And a lot of people do not get
the opportunity to be head coaches, and it is a
blessing to get that opportunity, Nolan.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
They're blessed to have you. What you're going to bring
to the program, all the things you've done.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Tell me now that you have a little chance to
reflect Athey and I have spoke about it, and you know,
of course we're gonna be burning up the expressway. Everybody
can't wait to come to Nashville. And all I'm gonna
tell you I'm gonna tell every time I see you,
you do the very best job you can do.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Do not worry about the wins and losses. They'll come.
Work the right way.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
Wins come last, but they'll come frequently if you build
it the right way. Noland, do not let anybody pressure
you or rush you.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
You do the right job, just like Coach K did.
Don't forget.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Your coach came to Louisville nineteen eighty two, Vince Taylor,
who you've hired as an assistant. We beat him forty
your dad, and I beat coach K forty.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
Nolan got me. I just want you to understand that.
So don't let anybody tell you that it's.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Got to happen overnight. You've got to know that's all
a lot. Coach K the greatest, John Woodin's the greatest.
Coach K second got me ever got bet forty points
right here in the fair grounds. So you just do
it the right way, and don't you ever let anybody
tell you that you have to do it any other way.
Everybody takes their knowledge. So you've reflected, what do you

(19:39):
think you're gonna have to do?

Speaker 1 (19:41):
What do you want to do at Tennessee State. How
are you going to accomplish your goals, young man?

Speaker 7 (19:46):
Well, well, first and foremost, no, like you said, I
want to do it the right way, but also understanding
the climate of today's sports, and it's a win it's
a win now type of game. And that's what I
said my plus college, what I told SANS State. They
understand I'm coming here to win, but without losing the
integrity of doing things the right way, still being the
leader of young men and making sure they're learning and

(20:09):
becoming better men off the court as well, and being
a part of this community of Tennessee State and in Nashville.
When my staff gets here, those are gonna be the
conversations that we're gonna have over and over and over again.
But right now, I'm building a community. I'm building a
village here that is coming in here ready to support
financially and athletically to make sure that we are the

(20:30):
best putting out the best product that Tennessee State has
seen and with the capability of a win now mentality.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Got you, well, I mean that is college athletics of today.
So I'm glad you're going in with your eyes wide open. Yeah,
tell me style of playing over how do you want
to play? What is your visions of playing style?

Speaker 7 (20:54):
I want to play fast. I want to play fast,
right up and down, and teach these guys how to
play the right way by want them to be able
to know how to play and play with freedom. You know,
I told these guys We've had up staff meetings. I've
had individual meetings with the players. That's what the mere
first first badline of duty coming in at this time
of the year and getting these guys to uh first

(21:15):
understand our defense and what we want to do defensively.
We want to get stops. We wanna get stops, want
to keep guys out of paint. Will be physical. We
want to be one of the best defensive teams in
the country statistically. And then after that, once we get
those stops, we want to run.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
We want to run.

Speaker 7 (21:28):
We want to play fast. We want to attack the paint.
One thing I track is paint touches, because if you
get in the paint and you get shots, then you
get then you get one wars, then you get good
to great. Right, I want to be the most unselfish team.
We want to play unselfish, but we want to play free.
We want to have the most confidence. One thing I
don't like is anything that's not confident. You have to
play to play a little confidence to play this game,

(21:51):
and I I try to instill that in.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
All my players.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
Tell me Little Anthony's gonna ask you a question or two.
But when you're talking about confidence, of course, you were
a confidence player. You're an All American, you were the best.
It came natural for you. What are you gonna do
when you have to recruit a player that you have
to grow knowing you're gonna have to help build his confidence.
What are you gonna do with that when he makes
a mistake? Are you a coach that's gonna pull him

(22:15):
right away? How are you gonna handle that?

Speaker 7 (22:19):
No? So, so it's different ways, but I think at
the end of the day, it's always gonna end with
some type of positivity. You know, first of all, you
have to trust your work. So I want I'm alway
gonna encourage guys to get in the gym and get better.
If you're get in the gym and get better, you're
gonna trust your work and you're gonna be confident. That's
gonna be times throughout throughout this game where you're confidence.
My way, but I might have to sell a kid.
But during that time when I set them, it's either're

(22:40):
gonna be myself or one of my assistants that constantly
goes to that kid, Hey, you're not playing confident?

Speaker 1 (22:45):
What's up?

Speaker 7 (22:46):
Like, You're gonna go and constantly have those conversations instead
of just look at the kid, go sit down the
bench and not talk to that and talk to that player. Right,
We're gonna be giving that confidant information of confidence and
giving them that that so they're gonna do go back
out there. They understand that the coaches on that sideline
have their back. Feel like I gonna shoot that ball
again or shoot it with one confidence?

Speaker 1 (23:08):
Yes, gotcha, Anthony, go ahead.

Speaker 6 (23:12):
What's going on?

Speaker 5 (23:13):
Knowing man, it's been a while since we talk.

Speaker 6 (23:16):
That's one of the questions I do want to ask.

Speaker 5 (23:20):
Obviously, being a newer coach at a.

Speaker 4 (23:22):
School, especially a little later in the year, when it
comes to the recruiting aspect, I'm like, this is one
of those seasons where you come in where you're gonna
be playing off pretty much the recruitment of the last
coaches players and just you know, a lot of people
do a lot of judgment, especially on a head coach's
first season at a new school. How do you feel
about getting even if you do get some slight criticism
for how if the season goes good or bad, kind

(23:44):
of being under a different recruiting class and players of
a different coach.

Speaker 7 (23:50):
Yeah, that's a great great that's a great question. I'm
just excited. And I and when I told these guys yesterday,
you know, I spoke to them about exactly that. But
I said, now that i've mess you, you're my players now.
And I take the responsibility of these guys, and I'm
excited to work with them. And I'm gonna turn them
into my guys. No, I didn't know. I didn't bring
them in, but I'm gonna. I'm gonna train them, love them,

(24:12):
coach them the exact same way as if I did
recruit them. So any any scrutiny or pressure that comes
my way that I accept it all. I'm built for it.
I'm excited about it. But I'm gonna let everybody know
whenever there is any adversary this year, these are my guys.
We're gonna continue to get better or we're gonna win
no matter what happens.

Speaker 2 (24:33):
Excellent no, And you've worked for a lot of people,
and in your short career you've been doing this, but
you've been under a lot of tutelage.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
Who are you gonna follow after Coach k Shire, you
had Coach Payne, you had Penny. Last year, y'all did
really well.

Speaker 2 (24:48):
Where did you get most of your X and o's
and your attitude about coaching from?

Speaker 7 (24:54):
Hmmm, I think I think I'm gonna be coaching O
Listman first and foremost. But I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna,
I'm gonna. I'm a student of the game and I
always have been a student. I love studying, I love
watching basketball.

Speaker 1 (25:09):
I watch a.

Speaker 7 (25:10):
Cc SEC Big twelve. Obviously, I spent the most time
with Coach k so a lot of stuff will be
from him. But after I study, I watch NBA games.
I'm I think it's like everybody, we taking pool from
from all the great coaches that are in this game.
But then at the end of the day, you try
and be the best version and create the best version

(25:30):
of yourself. I think my leadership style and teaching style
is unique, but it's but it's but it's me and
it fits me, and I'm excited to just to be
who I am and go out there and teach, teach,
teach and give these young as the blueprint to win.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
It's amazing Tennessee States, phenomenal University. What a great opportunity
for you, young man. Of course, you know we're coming.
I need particular teats, know that I need to be
our seat where I can stick out my bad knee.

Speaker 7 (26:00):
I got you, I got you, I got you.

Speaker 1 (26:03):
We're gonna be cheering. I know your mother's so proud.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
Tell Monica that we'll be right behind them in the
cars coming up. And you're gonna get tons of support
from this city. My wife when she found out, she
was in tears. Everybody just couldn't believe that their little
Nolan now is a grown man. And no, I hate
to say something. I asked you a trick question, and boy,
did you slap me in the face. And I am
so happy you did. You are coach Nolan Smith, welcome

(26:28):
to the coaching ranks, young man, and I can't wait
to see you go to work. Thank you for coming
on to your side.

Speaker 7 (26:34):
I appreciate, I appreciate you, coach. Thank you for having
me on.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Thank you yet, no question take care. We'll be calling
you later. Nolan, Kate, wait to see your brother. That's
the great Nolan Smith. Guys, at seven thirty five. We're
gonna get to break Nolan. Love you boy, and what
a fine young man. And like I told you, honestly,
you run into people every now and then like Derek Smith,

(26:59):
and everyone says, how did nineteen eighty happen?

Speaker 1 (27:03):
Anthony?

Speaker 2 (27:03):
And I know we've got to get to break Dave
Hubro be calling. But Anthony, Darryl Griffith, who you met
yesterday when you took care of his car, and he
called me. I told everyone the best player ever played
with in my life and never had a negative word
to say to Jerry's a special person. Derrick Smith and
I we fought, guys, we thought we were competitors. But

(27:25):
I'm telling you he's the best person I've ever met.
I mean that, point blank, guys. He is the best hearted,
integrity person I ever met in my entire life. Is
Dereck Smith, Nolan's dad. So, guys, we had a special group.
Scooter and Rodney McCrae. Rodney McCrae was the most giving

(27:48):
superstar you've ever seen. Every ten points a game was
a third player drafted because he wanted to make everybody
around him better. I was a fortunate person. I had
the greatest coach, Denny Crumb, and play with some of
the greatest guys ever. But Nolan Smith's dead. Guys, there
won't be another one. I mean that plane plank. It's
EVE Sports Radio. We'll talk to you all, Dave. He

(28:10):
will be back with us after the break, shedding run
two breaks for me. Please thank you. Welcome back to
EVE Sports Radio. July twenty fourth, twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (28:20):
It's Thursday. We're having a fantastic show. We really are.
I've got a guest.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
I've been with him in person probably four or five
years when my show was twelve to one, and he
invited me out to Mike Lennings with Nancy and oh god,
did I have a fantastic time.

Speaker 1 (28:37):
But now that they've moved me to seven.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
To eight, no one gets up that early to go
out the cars, aren't it Mike Lennings this early? So
I don't do my show there anymore, but I come out.
So I want to introduce the one and only Dave
Hubert to Eve Sports Radio. Mister huberw are you doing good?

Speaker 6 (28:53):
Morning dude, and great, great morning, Okay.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
A great morning.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
Like always, I appreciate you taking the time out to
get up and come on the Esports radio with me.

Speaker 1 (29:03):
You are, mister Huber.

Speaker 2 (29:05):
You are one of the first hot rodders in this state,
probably the most world renowned, and I'm just proud to
say I know you. When I say your name, Dave,
people say, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know the man.

Speaker 1 (29:17):
That's all I need to say. When I get into.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
Buying with cars, I said, I know Dave Hubert. They're like,
you're all right, Dad, You're good.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
That's the truth, And that is the truth. It's Hubert.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
Every year you've been doing this car business. How long
have you been building hot rides? How long have you
been living under hoods? And we've transmissions?

Speaker 7 (29:38):
How long?

Speaker 6 (29:41):
Probably since nineteen sixty sixty something. Starting helping my dad
at the gas station, and he got me hooked. And
it's never going to end.

Speaker 1 (29:53):
I guess, okay, it's never gonna end with you, without
a doubt.

Speaker 6 (29:57):
We started over and Shady Shady can Kuckey at his
gas station and it's been fun.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
What was your first cars before we get into all
these high priced cars, what was your first car.

Speaker 6 (30:09):
My first car that I built was a forty nine
Ford or well maybe a sixty three Volkswagon Van. Sixty
three Volkswagon Van was probably the first one that I restored,
and that was the one van fun times.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
Not the hippie van, come on, not the hell van.

Speaker 6 (30:30):
Well, it was kind of like a hippie van when
I was in high school, but it was it was
a fun ride, It really was.

Speaker 1 (30:37):
Okay, I'm sure, I am sure. Ye. What was your
first hot ride that you built? Your first race car?

Speaker 6 (30:46):
First race car was a fifty seven Chevy and about
night sixty nine and we raced it at Ohio Valley
and Beach Bend, sixty fifty seven Chevy three three fifty
Chevy engine in it, the three twenty seven. It was
a fun car to Okay, I got you, So you've got.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
I just wanted to build your experience. I want people
that are listening to understand that you've been doing this forever.
You have probably seen every car out and you know
most of there's something to know about cars, you know.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
So let's start with the event.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Before we get into your event that you host and
Mike Lenning's let's talk about the fifty sixth anniversary of
the National Street Rids.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
Who's coming? Where are they coming from? And tell me
about the event.

Speaker 6 (31:32):
There'll be cars from all fifty states here, all fifty states, Canada,
Mexico probably. Oh, there's always some people come from Australia
over here. We always see uh, they're just all over
the country. If you want to see the latest in
the street ride products, you can go in that building
out there at the fairgrounds and buy any kind of

(31:53):
a part you want to build, any kind of a
car you want, you know, but it's really got through parts.
People come here to see the latest and greatest.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
Okay, yep, well that's how many cars would we have?

Speaker 2 (32:07):
How many are coming in from all fifty I, like
mister hubert I said forty eight? Now I know it's fifty.
How many cars are coming? Do you expect to be
here next week?

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Ten?

Speaker 6 (32:18):
Ten thousand cars? Why is that anymore? That's what we get.
So that's a pretty good number.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
Okay, that's a pretty You fill up every hotel in
the city. I tell you that, other than Derby, you're
the biggest event. That's all there is to it in
the city. Other than Derby. This car show as for
what it brings, the people that come, the hotels, the rentals,
all the things, the restaurants.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
We appreciate that. The National street rods. How did this develop?

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Who came up with this idea that we're going to
take car shows around the country.

Speaker 1 (32:51):
Who did that?

Speaker 6 (32:53):
Well, fifty six years ago, I think in Peoria, Illinois,
they started the first street line Nashals with about five
hundred cars.

Speaker 5 (33:01):
And that.

Speaker 6 (33:04):
Fifty six years ago, that was a big show. Five
hundred cars. Nobody ever heard of that, and that was
all pay forty nine cars and that was an old
hot ride. But that's how it all started. With a
Vernon Walker and a bunch of other guys from Memphis,
Tennessee got that going, and a bunch of California guys
come and it would just it's it's kept going.

Speaker 4 (33:26):
It kept going.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
We see now it's grown too magnificence amount. Okay, let's
talk about some of these cars that will be at
Mike Lennings. You have an event and I don't want
to switch gears yet, but you do have an event
at Mike Lennings. We're going to get there, but talk
about some of the cars. There'll be contests, they're judges.
What are they judged upon? Are they giving away a

(33:50):
car again at the street?

Speaker 6 (33:52):
Right?

Speaker 2 (33:52):
Nationals like they usually do, tell me some of the
perks that you have an opportunity to win if you
go out next weekend.

Speaker 6 (34:00):
Well they don't. They don't give a car away anymore.
They give money. They give Instead of giving one making
one guy real happy, they're making four people happy. They're
giving some big bucks to four different big winners for
the weekend. And so that's that's worked out pretty good,
and I agree with that. But all kinds of prizes
judging whoever. On Sunday, if you come out there Sunday morning,

(34:25):
they'll park all the best cars in Freedom Haul and
you can come out there and see all the top
dogs in Freedom Hall. That's won all the awards for
the whole weekend.

Speaker 7 (34:35):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (34:35):
And that's the day to be there. I mean, the
whole weekend's good to be there, But Sunday, if you
want to see all the best cars, they're there on
Sunday and Freedom Hall.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
I will be their Sunday morning. You know, I've got
a really my best friend Martin Dunbar's got.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
A sixty six. I get this wrong every time Nova
red beautiful car he bought. He'll have it out there,
of course he'll. He can't wait. He'll be there at
four in the morning on Thursday. Dave, you know how
this goes. People. You ought to understand.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
They're out there waiting at three point thirty in the
morning to get their cars in so they can get
their spots that they like at the fair grounds.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
This is a true event. People love this.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
I can't believe people are as up as early as
they're going to be. But Martin Dunbar will be there
with his car. So now, which one of your cars
are you taking, Dave? You've got numerous which one are
you taking out?

Speaker 6 (35:25):
I'll probably drive a different car different I'll drive my
thirty two Forward probably Thursday and Flinty maybe I'm and
I've got my thirty seven pickup that I'll probably drive
at least one day. But the thirty two Forward more comfortable,
good air conditioning and everything, and as hot as it is,
we need that air conditioning. Okay, no question. So we'll

(35:48):
be out there.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
Okay, you'll be out I know you will.

Speaker 2 (35:51):
Okay, Now we've got to get to the show that
you put on at Mike Lenning's talk about that again.
What's it for the fundraiser? You have been doing this
for a while. Talk about Nancy and Mike Lennings in
your event there.

Speaker 6 (36:05):
Well, Tuesday is July the twenty ninth, from four to nine,
but we'll have cars at noon. But Tuesday, July the
twenty ninth at Mike Lennings. Uh, we do a pre
National kickoff party at Mike Lenning's restaurant on Cane Run Road.
So we'll be down there and we usually get cars
from twenty five states at Mike Lennings. That's almost unheard

(36:29):
to get twenty five different people from different states to
come on Tuesday, because that tells you right now that
people is coming to Louisville. Okay, so if you want
to see some NAT cars come to Mike Lennings Tuesday,
that could be a good preview of what you're going
to see. Everybody's welcome. It's a free event and they'll

(36:52):
have food for sale across the street. The Fist get
your good fist sandwich and everything and all all the
pros we make. We'll be collecting for the Crusade for
children all all day long and come down and see
us and donate something to see the cars now and
we'll have a good time. Okay you will, Yes.

Speaker 1 (37:14):
Now, here's the first thing I want to let you know.

Speaker 2 (37:16):
You have twenty five states represented because of the person
you are, because you were there coming there for you.
Everyone comes there for you for what you have represented
and what you're doing and how you give back to
this community. You do numerous fundraisers and I just want
to let you know people appreciate you. Your efforts is
why Mike Lenning's show is so huge. Now the cars

(37:37):
are fantastic. I mean they're just you all must get
out on Tuesday, make your lunch, go donate some money
so that for the Crusades you'll get to see fantastic,
beautiful cars. It's a great lunch. Nancy will have everybody up.
The hospitality is unbelievable, first class. It's a super event.

(37:59):
Now tell them about your calendar. That's the cars have
an opportunity to get on the calendar.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
Your calendar, and tell them about some of the gifts
and awards that you give out.

Speaker 6 (38:08):
And Mike Lennings, Well, October the twentieth, even Tuesday night,
it'll be about four cars that will pick that they'll
be on the calendar for the next year. But October
the eighteenth, we do a big cruise down there and
the top twelve cars will get on the calendar for

(38:29):
next year. Okay, So if you ever want to dream
about being on a calendar, come October or even Tuesday,
and you'll get a chance. If you get a top award,
you can be on the calendar for next year. Mike
Lenning's calendars that they always give away and sell. Okay,
really likes a neat a neat deal.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
I've been trying to bribe Nancy to get on the
calendar with my mother Stain. So before I let you go,
you know I can't be nice all the time, Dave.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
Here's the deal.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
I got into the car business with herb Vine Bluegrass,
Lincoln Mercury, Jim Haynes, and Mike viying everybody. They took
it to all new heights. But I got into the
business at Lincoln Mercury. I own a st Explorer. I
own a Shelby Cobra from Bluegrass. I now have a
Dodge t RX from Commonwealth, Dodge from Billy Hayes.

Speaker 1 (39:23):
So I want to find out through you. Your first
race car was.

Speaker 2 (39:26):
A Chevy if I remember correctly, What did Richard Petty
drive when they banned him because he was winning everything
by lapse?

Speaker 1 (39:33):
What was he driving at the time. I just want
to know.

Speaker 6 (39:37):
A Dodge. He was driving that Dodge and they got
rid of him and he had a driver forward for
a year until they let the Dodge back in. Okay,
isn't that crazy?

Speaker 1 (39:52):
Crazy?

Speaker 6 (39:54):
That is?

Speaker 3 (39:54):
So I'm putting you on the spot. You've got Ford.
I love my Cobra, You've got Dodge, I love my Tyrranx.
You've got Chevy your first race car. I don't care
what We've got to do a car show. Which is
the best car made maker in America?

Speaker 1 (40:13):
Which one? Who is it? Your opinion?

Speaker 6 (40:17):
Well? I drive a Ford every day and I got
a Ford thirty two Forward that I've got now, so
I think of Fords the number one in my opinion.

Speaker 1 (40:28):
Okay, okay, okay, okay.

Speaker 6 (40:31):
So that's what I'm I'm going to tell you. I'll
probably get some flak for saying that, Yes you will.
I've got and I've got chevyes too, but I think
fordge number one.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
Okay, okay, okay, got you.

Speaker 2 (40:44):
Well, let's I have no problem with that, my brother
retired from Ford. Martin Dunbar works at Ford even though
he owns a Chevy. You guys at Ford should give
Martin Dunbar a hard time. He owns a Chevy works
at Ford. But without a doubt, it's a fantastic weekend
coming up, David. I appreciate you, miss Uber like always.
Thank you for coming on Esports Radio and we'll get
you on again next week right before your show, we'll

(41:07):
talk on Tuesday.

Speaker 1 (41:08):
I'll call you again Sports Radio. Thank you, miss huber
He Sports Radio guys, you'll have a fantastic day. Put
a smile on somebody's face. God willing. I'll be back tomorrow.
