Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to Eve Sports Radio. It is Tuesday, December
the second, twenty twenty five. If you don't know, I
guess you haven't been up since about ten o'clock last night.
The roads are icy. Secondary roads are really bad. Main
expressways are fine. They're moving reasonably well. So be safe.
(00:22):
Take your time getting out of your neighborhood. I did
open my garage door open to go get my paper.
I looked outside, I closed my garage door, and I
did not go get my paper. I did not have
the proper shoes. We probably have two and a half
three inches in prospect, but still roads are manageable. Just
make sure that you leave on time if you have
(00:42):
to go to work. Welcome back to the show. As
you all well know, the phone number here is five
zero two seventy nine hundred. That's five zero two seventy
nine hundred. It's Sports Talk seven to ninety. I've got
Shannon behind the glass, without a doubt, best producer in
the country. I am the brand we will have at
(01:03):
the seven to fifteen mark. Jason Franks from The Carrier
Journal calling in. We're going to give you an update
on high school football where the championship games are what
is transpired, and also the basketball season started. Jason and
I were both at north Oldham last night watching north
Odham kill my balod Bruins. Oh they dismounted my bruins.
(01:25):
But that's okay, first game of the season. We will
bounce back. So we've got a lot to get to.
We are and we'll be taking calls. You all know that. Yes,
I had a winner. Last week's winter was Adam fifty
dollars winner. Adam was four and one. There was a
lot of casualties last week. As the games would come
(01:46):
more competitive, it gets tougher, there's no question about it.
I had a lot of people three and two. I
had a lot of people three two and three. Only
had two people that were four and one. So we'll
be getting those tallied up. As you all know, Scott
boll Wage when he comes back from Europe, so we're
not doing it. I send him to him so that
(02:07):
we don't mess this up. I just keep all the forms.
I'll be sending him to Scott and we'll be retallying
probably in a week or so. But the games for
this week, you've already got a few scores in. It's
a wrong page the scores for this week. The one
that matters is Indiana Ohio State Lucas Oil Stadium. As
we well know, a huge game, number one versus number two,
(02:30):
both of them Big ten. Big ten's top heavy. There
was no question about that. The other games that are
transpiring is Georgia Alabama. If Alabama loses that game and
doesn't get in, guys, in this need to cancel college
football playoffs, period point blank. Also BYU Texas Tech Duke
(02:50):
at Virginia. That's a big quin. Let me say that again.
Duke Virginia. I think that's in Charlottesville. And then we
have North Texas. And to light the reason that game's
end is because Tulane has an opportunity if Duke beats Virginia,
to be ranked higher to where there could be a
possibility of no ACC teams getting in. Now we know
(03:12):
that they're trying to lean heavily on this Miami deal
because the committee does not want to leave the ACC out.
But guys, I'm going to get to it. I just,
in my opinion, there are a few teams that have
to be in my strength of schedule, and I want
people to understand I'm a Danny Crumb prodigy. I believe
(03:35):
in Coach Crumb's philosophy. We played people, We really played people.
We played them on the road. Coach Crumb could care less.
We played everybody in their gym he wanted to, and
after winning it, we started to and seven. But playing
competition means things, so that I'm saying it means something.
When you don't play anyone and you've got a great record,
(03:56):
doesn't mean you've got a great team. Means you've had
a successful season, but it doesn't mean you have a
great team, two different things. People don't seem to understand that.
It means you had a successful season, but it doesn't
mean you have a great team. If your conference schedule
doesn't throw you in front of the big boys, it's
not your fault. And if you don't schedule a strong
non conference opponent, guys, you can have a good record
(04:19):
without having You could have a great, successful record but
not have a great team. Don't forget that. It's all
there is to it. Competition matters. It really does. So
saying that we can't he I mean shifting sands. Let's
start first with coach Stoops leaving the University of Kentucky, guys.
(04:40):
I thought I did a tremendous job at North Carolina
and t and there's a time you have to leave.
And when that linked director let me go. It was
the correct thing to do. It was a correct thing
to do. I had two years left on my contract.
They paid me every penny. I needed the break. I
mean I had been grinding hard. I needed the break.
I enjoyed it. Coach Stoops has done a great job
(05:03):
at Kentucky. Let's don't get a twisted. A great job
at Kentucky. He represented you all well. He didn't make excuses. Yes,
he got destroyed Saturday and it was time to go,
but he still did a phenomenal job for the University
of Kentucky, represented the school well. So I want to
(05:23):
say that first and foremost. I was at one of
his bigger wins early on when they beat South Carolina
and it was a huge win, and I went to
a party at his house. Treated me like a brother.
Great guy. Just want you know that. Then, at the
same time, we all know about this thirty eight million
dollar looming over Kentucky's head. We don't know what the
(05:45):
actual buyout is, but he did do what a lot
of coaches would not have done Brian Kelly. He said, hey, guys,
no problem, you have to pay me my thirty eight million.
Let's space this out. That makes sense. That's all that
I know. But again, that's a credit to coach students.
That's all there is to it. Now, let's move from there.
(06:08):
Great job coach students, period. Let's move from there. New coach.
In a blink of an eye. I was at breakfast
Sunday morning with some big alumni from University of Kentucky
and will Stein's name popped up first, one out of
their mouth. I didn't know who will Stein was. I
had no idea. So that did inform me who will
Stein was, where he was, and what he had done.
(06:30):
I said, okay, I know a lot about Oregon. Yes,
I know that coached Bownicks. I'm like, I know Bonnicks,
but that name was their strong Sunday morning, ten thirty.
Sunday morning, ten thirty, will Stein came out of their
mouth and boom, will Stein's the new coach at the
University Kentucky. Everybody now has Trinity ties. Coach Brahm Trinity
(06:55):
tized Coach Stein. Trinity ties the dark side everywhere shann
and I don't even know. I don't even know where
to begin. I'm pulling for my cards and coach bron
but he's from the dark side. Now Kentucky goes and
gets another quarterback from Trinity High School, the dark side.
It's like, boy, this is getting tough for me. But congratulations,
(07:18):
welcome to the University of Kentucky. We all know his
dad played at the University of Kentucky to Jerry Clayburg,
so he's got Kentucky roots. He is a Louisville cardinal
like myself. Boy, we have got a Now everyone is
wearing blue and red jackets, sewing together halfway. We all
(07:39):
have ties to each other, and both of these coaches
have ties to Trinity High School. So let's just be
honest with Trinity. I've got to be fair with this.
And this is another show Shannon will use for the
Christmas break. Jim was putting that out, so I'm going
to stay on the seven fifteen, seven point thirty so
that we can cut it easy. But yes, b ship
(08:03):
Man's got great heritage, fifty four touchdown passes at Trinity
High School, three times stay champion, his dad great football player,
and Jerry Clayborn. I mean, there's nothing to knock his resume.
It's phenomenal. What he's done offensively at Oregon is phenomenal.
Thirty eight point two points a game, four than sixty
(08:24):
five yards per game, and has done that numerous years.
Everywhere that he's been has coached bow Knicks. So I
think that, yes, he hasn't had the head coaching pedigree
that a lot of people are looking for. I like
the hire myself, I really do. I think that he'll
be able to do the one thing Coach Stoops wasn't
(08:45):
strong at. Coach Stoops is very good at loyalty, coaching defense.
But offensively, Kentucky has labored period point play. They've labored offensively.
They've had some great players, great Jason's on and we'll
get to break. They've had some great players. I mean,
I was watching Rodriguez, watching the running back at Buffalo.
(09:06):
I mean, Kittucky's had great players, Benny Snail, we know that,
but they labored offensively numerous years. I don't think that
will happen anymore. I think that this will change that.
So we're going to talk more about that. We are
talking and accepting calls. I'm going to go to break
at seven fourteen. I've got Jason Franks. You all all
(09:27):
know Jason franksis the one and only. He covers all
the high school sports in this city. I think he
does a tremendous job. We've got a lot to talk
about with that also, and we're going to get some
of his opinions about this college issue and what's going on.
This is Eve Sports Radio, got Shannon behind the glass.
It is seven fifteen December. The second roads are dicey.
(09:48):
Be safe, be careful out there. Everyone's loved ones are
out there. Be very careful with what you do when
you're driving. And we'll talk to you all after the break.
Welcome back to EVE Sports Radio pH Number five zero.
Of course we have the one and only. I want
to bring on Jason Franks, the only high school writer
(10:08):
in the city. A little that matters, Jason, Welcome to
the sports radio.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Are you I'm doing well, Jerry? How you doing this morning?
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Well? Jason? You and Coach Renner did not have to
kill me last night And said Coach Renner said to you,
I heard Jerry get you on the show tomorrow. He said, God,
why is it at seven am? Come on Jason. You
know you're up at five, you know you are.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
I work late nights. I've worked in late nights, man,
So yeah, it's it's it's a little early bit, but
I'm I'm happy to be with you.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
I appreciate it. I appreciate you taking the time out
and of course all your wisdom and knowledge. But let's
just start a year. I was talking about Will Stein.
I'm sure you know a lot more about him than
I do through covering some of the sports, and what
have you heard about the young man?
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Yeah, I'm getting old. The guys I covered are now
becoming head football coaches. So yeah, I remember, I remember
Will when he played at Trinity, And you know, he's
obviously skyrocketed, uh since he's gone into the coaching profession
and really sort of established himself himself as one of
the uh the premier assistant coaches in all of college football.
(11:23):
And uh, you know, I you know, I think there
were you know, I think Cel Brown wrote a column
that Kentucky waited too late to get the guy they wanted,
and then in the summerroll guy from Tulane. But you know,
I think they've they've made a really quick turnaround here Uh,
to get maybe a guy just as good and will
(11:44):
Stein and Uh, I think he's gonna inject some I
think he's gonna inject a little more passion into that program.
A guy that pretty much everybody in the state of
Kentucky knows about, who, like I said, has been really
successful as an assistant coach everywhere. And it's pretty remarkable
that the two, uh, the two big jobs in the
(12:06):
in this in this state college football wise, are now
both manned by former Trinity High School quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Both man by Trinity High School. I mean, it's amazing.
That is a credit to Trinity. I must I call
them the dark side, Jason. I give them a hard time,
not the quality athletes. I just give them a hard
time because they recruit a little bit for me and
it's hard for my Bruins to compete. But other than
whining they've had, they've got a tremendous program. They've got
(12:36):
great athletes, They've had players go on to do I'm
a coach. Brom fantastic offensive mine, will Stein fantastic offensive mine.
Why do you think this is that Trinity has produced
two coaches that are really good offensively?
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Why you know, I think It's probably just coidents, to
be quite honest about it. But you know, they both
came through. They both came through, you know, like you said,
a great program, you know, with they won twenty nine
state championships. I was trying to do the mass I
(13:14):
think I have. Jeff obviously did not play for Bob Batty,
but he played for Dennis Lampley if I'm right, Uh,
that's a little bit from my time. But Jeff played
for Dennis Lampley. Will played for Bob Batty, you know,
Dennis Lanthley and Bob Batty. I think if you're going
to throw out, you know, the list of the greatest
(13:35):
high school football coaches in the state of Kentucky, I
think both of those guys are on it, Lampley and Beatty.
So you know, they both played under great coaches, you know.
You know, obviously, Jeff is from a football family, so
you know, football has been his whole life. I'm not
sure so much about will Stein's background, but obviously.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Father played for Jerry Clayborn.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Yes, okay, okay, so they're both football families then, So
you know, I think it's probably just the incidents that they,
you know, both happened to go to Trinity High School.
But they both went through a great program there and
learned from you know, two great football minds in Dennis
lamp Ley and Bob Baby.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Yes, last question before we move into high school coach Stoops.
This transaction happened so quickly people even had a chance
to speak about coach Stoops and what he's done in Kentucky.
Your opinion you had to evaluate coaching Stoops is thirteen
years of Kentucky. How would you rank you?
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Well, you know, I cover high school sports. I'm not
much you know, I'm not a UKA or a U
of Old fan, to be quite honest with you, I
grew up in Bowling Green, so I'm a Western fan,
you know, I think you know, I always it always
feels like to me that with UK football, they're always
(15:00):
you always hear that term trying to turn the corner,
you know. And and and he had some very good
football teams. You know, you can't deny that they had
some very good football teams during his tenure. Obviously, the
last couple of years haven't gone the way he wanted
them to go. But you know, we look at the
(15:22):
landscape of college football these days and never in my
lifetime has there been a greater divide between maybe the
top I don't know, six or seven programs in the
nation and then everybody else, you know, and and unless
you're in that top seven or eight programs, there's just
(15:46):
a great divide there. And and most of those programs
just happened to be in the UK's conference. So I
mean it's just yeah, I mean we can argue, you know,
you know, I know people love to hate on the SEC,
and that's fine, but I mean look at the history.
I mean, dam in Georgia, they dominate college football the
(16:08):
last ten fifteen years unless you're one of those or
you know, the occasional LSU, and you know, all miss
Is obviously had a great year. I mean there's just
I mean, we all know how Kentucky basketball is perceived.
They're one of those top eight or ten programs every
year see college basketball. They're just not there in football.
(16:30):
And that's just the reality of it.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
No, that that's just the truth. The SEC is so
competitive top to bottom, and you have to throw in
the Auburns every now and then you have to throw
in LSU. I mean, they've got national championship. Yeah, Cam
Newton at Auburn. They've got national championship Florida head back
to back Heisman winner. I mean that Conference Florida's down now.
But you're a hundredcent correct when you look at the
(16:54):
history of the SEC. I mean, it's just a grind.
It's really hard to be consistent. So I appreciate your opinion.
No coach Stoops always treated me well. I'm being honest
with you. Feel passes whatever I wanted. I think he's
done more than that one of a job. It's just people.
I want everyone to know, coach my entire life been
(17:17):
fired numerous times. Coaches we signed the contracts, we blow
on the ink. I told the alumni, I'm not going
to tell you who Sunday Kentucky, I said, guys, don't
you all know that eighty seven eighty eight percent of
all college coaches get fired, all even the ones that start. Well, Oh,
I just want people to understand. Now the crazy buyouts,
(17:41):
that's I would accept it. I just signed a contract,
trust me. That's something that the universities have to get
a grip on. But no, coach Stoops, I just wanted
you know it was time to go. But excellent job.
You talk about college landscape. Before I move on, we
got poor Langkaff and you know what, just a poor
I feel for the guy. You know what I'm saying.
(18:01):
He just gets treated so poorly and everybody treats him
so badly. I'm talking about. You talk about a guy
that's full of himself. He's a great football coach with
back goodness. He full of hisself. Did you hear about ESPN?
I don't know what I make. You don't have to
know what you make when you know you're gonna make
more than god sence. I mean, come on, what are
(18:23):
we talking about. I never take jobs on what I'm
going to make. It's just I would tell you this
after listening to Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, about
a month ago, talking about what they weren't going to
do anymore with these crazy salaries and fifty four million
dollars guaranteed. From what I've heard, lank you'ven signedday a
(18:46):
seven year deal for thirteen b A dollars a year,
all guaranteed from what I heard. So I don't know
about the governor of Louisiana. Maybe he needs to stay
with governing something he knows something about that's all I
can say because this is comical. So we'll have to
wait and see shifting sands, all the moving pieces which
I'm gonna throw to you, and we come back from breaking,
(19:08):
we see all the moving pieces in college football. They
mentioned likeness, We see it. It's crazy. As a player,
I'm just let the players are being paid, Jason. I
want everybody to know I don't care. I just don't care.
There's too much money being made for the players not
to participate. I understand that it's out of control, yes
it is, but it will not go out of business,
(19:30):
trust me. But we've got moving sands in high school
that I do disagree with, with the moving of players,
and we're gonna talk quite a bit about that after
the break, Jason. So that's gonna be the first thing
I hit you with before we get into who's where
and who's gonna be good and what team's gonna win
the state high school championship in football. I want to
(19:52):
talk to you about the moving sands and high school athletics.
I've got Jason, Frank's on the line. This is the
sports Radio. It's seven. We're staying to task. We'll be
back right in about that seven thirty. When we come back,
we're gonna talk to Jason about his expertise. EVE Sports Radio.
We'll talk to you in a minute. Welcome back to
the Sports Radio seven thirty two, phone number five zero two,
(20:14):
five nine hundred. Jason Franks is with me. Of course,
Cure Journal the only high school bea reporter. That means
a thing. Jason, just start with the changing sayings, the
moving of players. What is transpiring? What's going on with
this in high school sports in this state.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Yeah, it's it's obviously a huge issue. And you know,
I go to these ks just to w a border
control meetings and you know they talk about the number
of transfer requests they get on a monthly and yearly basis,
and it's it's obviously at an all time high. You know,
I've found a lot about it, and you know, you know,
(20:56):
obviously everything trickles down and we've seen it in college
with the transfer portal now over the last few years,
and it's obviously trickled down to high school sports. You know,
I get it. I understand. You know, kids are looking
for their best opportunities and you know, loyalty to a
(21:21):
school as we see in college doesn't mean much more
in high school these days. And you know, we talk
about the kids a lot, but you know, the kids
aren't the ones who can up and move a family, right.
The kids have no control. The kids have no control
(21:42):
over where they're going to live as teenagers. So I
think it comes down to the parents. And for whatever reason,
over the last fifteen or twenty years, parents are now
empowered to make these decisions right or wrong. But they're
empowered now to make these decisions and move their kids
(22:05):
wherever they see the best opportunity. Now, the other part
of that is the K just to bel a has
allowed it to happen. You know, they may rule a
kid ineligible when they transfer, but as soon as that
kid hires a lawyer decides to fight it, well, the
(22:26):
K just doublay, more often than not, is going to
back down and let the kid be eligible. Now there's
another side to that as well, because the K just
to Belay they're not autonomous. They answer to somebody, and
they answer to the Kentucky Department of Education, which answers
to the state legislature. The K just double a will
(22:48):
tell you that the state legislature doesn't want them ruling
kids ineligible. The state legislature wants you know, the House
of Represents, there's the Senate, the people who run the state.
They want kids playing. They don't want parents calling them
asking them why their kids can't play. So the K
(23:10):
just double A is under a lot of pressure to
allow these kids to play. And so, you know, we
hear a lot of criticism of the K just double
A has allowed this to happen. You know, in a sense,
that's true. But the CA, like I said, the K
just double A, is not autonomous. They answer to people
as well, and those people do not want kids being
(23:33):
ruled ineligible. And so that's why we're at where we're
at these days.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Great point. I'm glad you brought that up. I've told
people that numerous times about college sports and how did
we get here? And everyone says NC double A. Everyone
loves to jump on the president NCUBA. No, it's your
president's at your universities. It is your athlete directors at
your universities that vote on these rules. But they don't
want to admit that. So when their school's in trouble,
(24:00):
it's NC double A. If one of their players is
in trouble, it's NC double A when that is not
the truth. Now let's continue on. When he said parents,
it's long, it's the parents. There's two ways to do this.
I've got no dogs in the fight. My boys are
(24:20):
out of school, my daughters are out of school. I'm
sure I have grandkids coming through. I've got two right
now that one's a dance one's a dancer, and my
grandson may be an athlete. We have to wait and see.
But the problem of is this, there's two ways to
do this correctly. And Jason, I don't know why people
are afraid to tell parents the truth. Either you move, if
(24:44):
you move your family, he can play anywhere he wants to.
You know what I'm saying. As long as the family,
the mom and dad uproot, move move homes, move apartments.
I don't care how you do it. But you're move
and you live in a different district, your son or
daughter can play period five point blank. Shut the door one.
(25:04):
That's one way. The second way is and I would
like it to be at a proper time. Most of
the time real estate people would tell you soon a
school was out, real estate's hot because parents are trying
to move in the districts they want their kids to
go to. There's usually appropriate time. But I'm finished with
that appropriate time thing. I think I'm too old for that.
But my dad would always tell me there's an appropriate
(25:26):
time for everything, period, point blank. But I guess we're old,
so I'm gonna say I'm old. You're not dead, Jason,
that's first. Second part is if you send your kids
to prep school are private school. If you send them
and they're good enough to go to a prep school
and the school wants to take them and you don't
have to pay, fine, If you send them to a
private school and you pay for the private school, fine,
(25:49):
you understand in your city. If you send them to
a private school and you pay because you want them
to go to that private school. Again, sign off. That's
a rubber stamp, and I only had to sign that.
Give me the presidential I'm just stamping that. That's standard approval.
Those are the two ways. All these other things that
are transpiring or no nos, uh school to school during
(26:12):
the year, just transferring because uh, maybe the coach didn't
play you the way you wanted to or the parents
thought they weren't playing the correct way. Here's what I
want to tell all the parents. The numbers don't change. Parents.
I hate to tell you so I really don't have
a problem with them because I know the numbers. I
don't care how many times you move your kids. It's
not gonna make them a Division one basketball player, high
(26:33):
level and it's not gonna make them a pro. I
don't care how many times you move them. That's just
a lie. You can live the lie, and they can
argue with high school coaches that don't know the facts
that they think that they can strong arm they have
an end with the principal, or like you said, they're
gonna call the legislator, or they've got some money, they're
a donor, whatever they think they have got me to
(26:56):
where they tried to sent strength toward the toward the
people trying to administrate. This is wrong. It doesn't change
the numbers. Your kids aren't playing pro. Call the show.
Call me up anytime you want to. I'm gonna tell
you the numbers. Your kids are not gonna play pro.
That's all there is to it. Yes, so what are
(27:17):
we doing?
Speaker 2 (27:18):
Yeah, you know, what are we doing? I think about,
you know, I think about in a lot of these cases,
how many of these kids. And we're not just talking basketball,
we're talking baseball, We're talking a lot of sports. How
many of these kids, from the time they're eight to
thirteen or eight to fourteen, how many of these kids
(27:39):
are coached by their moms and dads? A lot of them,
a lot of them? Right, Yes, So mom and dad,
Mom and dad get to control those kids playing time,
you know, where, what position they play, what have you. Now,
when they get to high school, mom and dad aren't
in control anymore, right, And so when mom and dad
(28:03):
lose that control over how much their kid is getting
to play, we run into problems. So, you know, I
think that's part of it as well, the proliferation of
youth sports. And you know, and I see it all
the time. My kid is a swimmer, and there's not
(28:23):
a whole lot of swimmers around, but I've seen it.
It was my own kid. A family who didn't like
the way it was going in there, you know, my
kids in a club swimmer, A family who didn't like
it the way it was going. They went and started
their own club. You know, that's that's just the way
of the world right now.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
It is. But it doesn't mean, Okay, I have no
problem with you starting your own club. Your a little niche,
but don't try to affect every justin county school system,
team coach, athletes, mood of the school at that's where
the parents are going to farm, that's all. That's where
they're going too far. There's two ways to do this,
that's all. And I want people to parents to know
(29:06):
prep school and some most of the time they accept them.
They don't have to pay, they're good in the fine,
no problem. Private school, okay, if you pay for the
private school. I don't like private schools recruiting. I don't.
But if you have to pay for the private school,
that's your progative. It's your pocketbook, no problem. Or move
(29:27):
move from Prospect to Jtown, Jaytown to Shinese District, Shinese
District to Centris. I don't care. Move rubber stamp. It's simple.
But all these other things. The legislation needs to get
a backbone. They can take you. High School Athletic Association
needs to get a backbone. The coaches in ads at
the schools needs to get a backbone. And they need
(29:48):
to just tell the parents to know. I always tell
them this, and I mean this. I've said this my
entire coaching career. I hope no doesn't hurt your feelings,
it doesn't hurt mine. It is a word no. I
didn't develop it. I didn't put it in the dictionary,
but it means no, and it would help the kids
because they're not going to be pros. We have three
(30:08):
pictures on the wall at Ballard. There should be five
Dwine Wheat, and I know I'm leaving someone out, so
I don't want to have a brain fard, but there
should be five. Got me throughout the entire time of
Ballast history that honestly made a dime professionally playing pro sports.
Five all the great players, all the great coaches, I
(30:30):
mean great players. Five. That's all I want people to know.
Ballot was built, was seventy two, seventy three. Five made
a real dime. Alan Houston made real money. Jeff Lamp
made more than I did. I made more than Wheat did.
I played longer, stayed longer. Guys, they're oh, the young
man from Butler what's his name? He did really well?
(30:50):
Oh god, the high school player that went to Butler
University from Baller who played pro I can't believe him
for that.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
Oh that's big big six.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
Yeah, six seven, really good. Yeah, mister Martin, So I'm
so sorry for the brain fart exactly.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
Then we've got the little money I think when he
went over.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Yeah, but I'm still I'm talking about I'm talking about
NBA money, Overseas money. A lot of people get enamored.
Most don't make any money. Listen to me, I don't care.
I've done this for a living. Most overseas guys don't
make a lot of money, No, they don't. They go
for the experience, but not for the money. So when
we're talking about NBA money to where you made an
NBA roster, guys, look how many. That's all I'm saying
(31:34):
to you. There are more acquintent snyders that gelt really
play that didn't make an NBA dime than Jerry's Jeff
Lampeley Raker. You understand what I'm saying. That's all I'm telling.
And Martin, there's four of us that made a real dime,
that made a pension. They get money from the NBA.
That's it. It's a lie. But you know, I mean,
we're living lives. So let's go forty three high school football.
(31:55):
We've got Trinity south Ward who wins that game.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
Uh, you know, South Warren's really good. Uh, they're they're
fourteen and oh they've got some talent, you know, Brandon
smith Son, Chuck smith a great coaching family. Brandon's done
a great job. A lot of people forget South Warren
was in five A last year. Uh, they got bumped
up to sixth A this year and and they've been
(32:20):
really good. But uh, it's hard for me to imagine
anyone beating beating Trinity right now. You know, I saw
him running clock saying X last week. They're playing so well,
you know, Zane Johnson, their junior quarterbacks, playing in the
state final for the third straight year. But the thing
(32:41):
that people I think the reason Trinity, I mean, among
the many reasons, but the reason Trinity is so good
is their defensive line. Their their defensive line controls the
line of scrimmage. Their defensive line. If you look at
any single unit on any single football team in the
(33:01):
state of Kentucky, their defensive line is the best unit
of any team anywhere in the state. It's so good.
They have four guys up there who all could play
D one football going forward, and they just harassed the quarterback.
They stop the run game. So and you know, unless
(33:26):
those guys don't show up, Trinity is gonna win.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
I saw that up close and personal. I watched Vallad
play Trinity. Their defensive line are grown men. I mean
that it was men amongst boys. I agree with you.
It'll be a running clock. But congratulations self worn seven
forty five. We're gonna stay on Taskcaus Jason, We're gonna
play this show during Christmas. So I've got to go
(33:50):
to break right now. When we come back, we're gonna
talk to you a little bit more about what's going
on with Cal who's still playing. I'm so happy for
them and KCD. Then we're gonna throw it to the
basketball game last Nights Radio. I got Jason Franks with me.
We'll be back up to the break. Welcome back to
the sports Radio. I've got Jason Franks on. Jason, tell
me Kyle Murray who wins the game? Cal?
Speaker 2 (34:17):
Yeah? Cow, I mean they have you know, they have
so many weapons. You know, Jackson Burke, their sophomore quarterback,
has been outstanding this year, and then they have a
junior wide receiver and Jahide Brown, who is the best
wide receiver in the state. You know, I put him
up there with you know, when I think of the
(34:39):
best wide receivers I've ever seen in my years of
doing this, I think of Devonte Parker and Rondel Moore,
who both played in the NFL. I think Jahide Brown
is right there with those guys compared to how they
were in high school. I think, you know, he's a
big time college prospect, and I think he I always
(35:00):
has a chance to play on Sundays as well.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
He's that good, excellent. I'm gonna have to watch him
next year Kentucky Country Day Race.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Yeah, I'll tell you what. It's gonna be hard for
me to pick ca CD just because of the history.
You know, the last two years they run up against
Racelan in the playoffs. Uh, they're both in the state
semi finals the last two years. Twenty twenty three, Racelan
got him forty two to six. Last year it was
(35:31):
a lot closer, it was fourteen to nothing. So maybe
they're making strides against Raceland. They've closed the gap from
twenty three to twenty four. But and I have a
hard time picking KCD just given the history with Raceland
over the last couple of years. So I'll be picking
Raceland in that game.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Well, there you go, KCD. There's no reason you showing up.
If Jason Franks says.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Raclo no no, no, no, no, no, no no. If
you don't say that, don't say that. I'll get in trouble.
I'll get enough trouble not taking them, So you will.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
You're gonna get in trouble. You're gonna get calls, no question.
Let's go to move. Let's let's move to high school
basketball started last night. Of course, we were both at
the Ballad North Oldham. Oh gosh, North breaks off my bruins. Uh,
what's going on with both programs. We've got players missing moving.
I really don't want to talk about them. Let's talk
about the players that did play. Rajon Rondo, So let's
(36:26):
start there.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Man, what do you think, heart of believe he's just
an eighth grader, right, I mean, uh, you know, talking
to Greg Willison, you know, after the game, he reminded
me that, you know, Greg Willis Bowers head coach, he
and Regeon were in the same class in high school. Uh,
Greg at Ballard and uh Ragon at the Eastern of course,
and he recalled his junior year. You know when Rageon
(36:52):
was still at Eastern and he said, Pierre has a
lot of rage On in and you know, the visibility
to get to the rim. And uh, you know David
Levitch was talking about when he when he gets to
the rim, just his body control, his ability to score
at weird angles if you will, you know, to draw fouls,
(37:13):
and so, uh, he's he's small, but you know he's
got a big heart and he's not afraid of anything
going in there. And you know, twenty nine points is
an eighth grader against a pretty talented you know Ballard team.
Granted they were missing a couple of key players, but uh,
he he put on a show last night. And uh,
you know, you never know his kids these days. And
(37:36):
I thought the same thing about base Mason Drivna, the
big six' ten kid At. Ballard you, know he's just a,
freshman And i'm sitting there, Thinking, MAN i HOPE i
get to cover these kids for the next three or
four years they stick around.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
And we get to watch the Develop.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
YEAH i, mean it's it stinks that you have to
think in those terms these, days but we've seen it
so many, times especially with, basketball more than any of the.
Sport you, know these kids move on to prep schools
and things like, that and you, know more power to
them if they think it's about you, KNOW i don't
begrudge that at. All you, KNOW i don't like seeing,
(38:13):
it but that's a selfish thing on my. Part you,
Know i'm not gonna you, know if they feel like
it's better for, them their their, families, whatever that's. Fine
BUT i really hope we get to see those those
kids play around here for the next few.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
Years SO i told everyone there were about five or
six pros In Justin county in my three years as
a starter At. Valor no one had to go anywhere to,
play and no one had To Rudy macklin didn't have
to Leave shawnee to go to THE nba or go
TO lsu and be the fifth and sixth leading. Scorer
Daryl griffith didn't have to go. Anywhere he didn't have
to Leave mayo And Wade, Houston, Jerry Jeff lamp And
(38:48):
Lee raker didn't have to. Leave Coach schmidt about we
didn't have to leave to accomplish what we. Wanted but
it is a different world.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
Now so, yeah but these, KIDS i, know these. Kids
you still don't have to, Leave you don't have to.
Agree if you're good, enough the coaches will find you
wherever you. Are and that's just the. Fact, now NOW
i get the flip side of. It some of these
kids might be in bad, situations you know here in
(39:19):
getting out Of. Louisville maybe it is the best thing for.
Them and maybe you, know a more structured atmosphere at
prep school does get, them does get them more prepared for. College,
so LIKE i, SAID i don't begrudge them taking those,
opportunities but it. Does you, know you look at a
(39:39):
kid Like cole even he went there a prep. School
it didn't work out for. Him he came back, home
so you, know you, know it doesn't work for. Everybody but.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
AND i hope it works. OUT i hope it works
out also For cold BECAUSE i love his. Father he
AND i go way. Back he's off with buddies of,
Mine SO i hope it works out also, Here, okay
best team in the? State who is high school? Basketball
who's the best team?
Speaker 2 (40:04):
Who In especially it's, harder it's harder this, year but
five he's got a. Shot you, know last year we
went into the season great crossing And Saint xavier were
one two all. Year we knew we had a really
good feeling one of those two teams was gonna Win,
(40:27):
state And Great crossing won it this. Year you, KNOW
i was talking To Kevin klein about this last you,
know you, Know Saint x's ranked number one going into the.
Season they have a lot more question marks than they
did this time last. Year that's not to say they
can't win, it but the top of high school back
there's a whole lot more parody. Going we can't say
(40:49):
only one or two teams have a chance this. Year
that's not the way it.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
Is tell me About eastern And Coach morrow and coach we. Got,
yeah they've got a nice. Team they.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
Do they got a big six to eleven transfer in From. Texas. Uh,
uh who's going To Northeastern university up In. Boston they've
got another big guy they haven't got eligible, yet but
once they get. Him, uh they're gonna be a nice.
Team they Beat South over them last, night a good
start to their.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
Season, okay. Excellent what we're gonna do is during The
king of The, Bluegrass, jason you gotta get back up
with me. Again we're gonna talk to more high school.
Basketball that's. Good Appreciate Jason Curio. Journal everybody knows where
to find, him of, Course, JASON i take the. Paper
i'll get it every. Morning not this. Morning there's too much.
Snow appreciate your, Time, Jason God, william thank. You i'll
(41:41):
be back. Tomorrow great, Job, Chadning bye bye
