(00:00):
Good morning everyone. This is ScottBold filling in for the brand Cherry Eves.
Obviously he's on vacation, sabbatical whateverhe wants to do now, but
he's still upsetting us text messages. We got John filling in for Matt and
also on board with us this morning. As always. If I'm on,
We've got Anthony. E's on.Anthony, how are you doing this morning?
(00:22):
I'm doing well. I'm doing well. Got ESPN rolling on the TV,
and my dog's over here rolling aroundin circles. So do a lot
of multitasking this morning. Oh yeah, Now, you know I have to
address a rumor here that last timeI talked to your dad on the phone,
he said, uh, last timeyou guys played golf, he was
beating you through five or six holes? Is that? Is there any truth
(00:46):
to that rumor? It was,but I guess he didn't tell you the
end results, you know, sayingbeating me through five holes and loses.
But yeah, you know I washaving a having a rough round. I
would say I was a lot moreconsistently lately. All right, you know
what, I'm sad. I gotI got my brother. Got my brother
(01:06):
about about a week or two ago, I shot a forty two and snubbed
them by two. I blew upon the back line though, because we
end up playing eighteen that day.I played. I played so good through
the first nine I was like,I'm playing phenomenal. But back then I
like explode. I shot like afifty five. Like I don't know if
I got tired or what, butmy shots going lily everywhere. I was
just spraying on man, I'll tellyou what. One day, one day
(01:30):
we got to get your brother Frankon when when we're on and let's me
get some good stories about your dad, you and Frank and him on the
golf course. One day we gotto get Frank on. Uh. They
played all the time without me,and know we teld me the scores.
Unless somebody plays really well, that'susually obviously, you know when whenever your
(01:55):
dad plays well, it's always,uh, it stops as soon as the
wheels fall off, you know.So we don't really talk about the last
four holes, but you know hehad to through five and then that's that's
where the conversation ends. Yeah,it's all he's got and he's like,
oh, my knee started hurting, and we're just like Oh, of course,
here we go. We got it. Oh yeah, we got a
(02:19):
great show in store this morning.Let's start. You know, we got
the NBA Summer leave, we've gotthe Olympics, but let's start on the
baseball side. So I don't knowif you had a chance to watch any
of the Home Run Derby last night, but when I was getting settled in,
I called the semi finals and thechampionship round of the Home Run Derby,
(02:39):
And to me, that's one ofthe most exciting parts of any All
Star game. You know, youhave the NBA Done Contest, you have
three point contests. This may bemore comparable to the three point Contest,
but it definitely brings a lot ofexcitement to the game baseball. And we
(03:01):
were able to watch any of thosehighlights, and yeah, I saw a
few of them, especially I sawthe one with Hernandez is going to grins.
I know, probably with Junior andthe championship, the championship round,
they're showing, like the statistics Ithink he had. He had sixteen plus
home runs, like I think, more than anybody else in the field over
(03:23):
four hundred and twenty five feet, which is supposedly like a new record so
I saw that, so he wasI mean, he was crushing them.
But I saw the odds spread ofhim to like win the home run derby.
It was like so big, itwas crazy. It was it was
like plus seven thousand. And thenI think, like like draft Kings,
if somebody had a boost on himto like plus ninety one hundred. So
they're like people putting in like twentyfive one hundred dollars bets on Hannetta to
(03:46):
win and they're winning like nine thousanddollars. I saw some of them this
morning. I was like, that'sI think that's crazy. So like the
for your odds be plus seven thousand, that is obviously And then we talked
about this a few episodes ago orall my better is out there are the
ones who dealt bet plus seven thousandis like pretty much you about to get
(04:08):
blow it out of the waters. That's the type of spread it is.
That's not even close. So forhim to pull it off and win,
that means one a lot of peoplelost some money betting on Bodywood Junior,
and then people who bet on Hernandezone a ton oh yeah. And the
interesting thing about him is he's wantedto be in this home run Derby for
the past couple of years and theyjust kind of keep passing on them.
(04:30):
And now he finally gets his opportunityand takes full advantage of it, which
is great. And here's the thing. He won a million dollars. Let's
be happy that you know he madeit. And now all of a sudden,
you go from a plus seven thousand, which is again, like you
said, huge, huge odds toovercome, and then you end up winning
(04:56):
and you win a million dollars. That's a great story for someone who's wanted
to be in the home run Derbyfor the past couple of years, and
now he finally gets his opportunity andboom, now he has a million dollars
in his pocket. I can seewhy his girlfriend or or wife was very
happy after that. All anybody wenton a million dollar bonus. And I
(05:20):
know it's showing too. You know, Pete Alonzo is in it. He
had the lowest home runs in homelund Derby history. I think he had
twelve, Yeah, which is crazy. I would think it would be better
than that. But you know whatthat the home run Derby is. It's
it's different. You know, wetalked a little last night. But you
(05:43):
know, people don't understand if you'renot a baseball person, but you have
to really change the way you swingfor the home run derby. You know,
you're when you play the game ofbaseball, you're you don't hit for
home runs every time you step tothe plate, and now you're want to
(06:03):
become a home run hitter, andso you have to change your swing,
you know, really trying to changethe trajectory of the ball. And that's
why in the past some of thebigger names have stayed away from it because
they don't want to have to changetheir swing and go back to a regular
swing. After the All Star breaking, you're trying to, you know,
(06:25):
get everything turned around from there. But here's the interesting factor. And you
know, we talk about a milliondollars and I was doing a little research
this morning. Do you know howmuch the winner of the dunk contest receives?
Actually, I actually do not.I'm not sure how much Dunk contest
when it receives, they get awhopping one hundred and five thousand dollars.
(06:54):
It's a huge difference, ten timesmargin difference. Yeah, Now, you
know, at this point, Idon't even blame them for only giving that
much the dunk contests because the dunkcontest has been so watered down for the
last decade, Like I wouldn't evenI don't even know if I pay them
that much. I'm gonna be honest. Half the time, it doesn't even
look like they even try. Sohere's the question for you. So if
(07:17):
they raised it to a million dollars, do you think you would get a
different turnout as far as who participatesin the dunk contest? Most likely,
yes, I would believe so.I mean, you'd be surprised how many
people do things for money. ButI mean, you know you get some
of those, like even from themid level players who aren't making the ton
(07:41):
and you know they're trying to getthe little bullers just you know, get
them over that hump, because I'mlike, you gotta understand, you got
players that are out in LA onthe Lakers and the Clippers who are on
those two ways or they're you know, those little guaranteed contracts are maybe ten
fifteen million after you take taxes awayand the cost of living out there.
You know they're not making that money. You know, they're living like a
(08:01):
lot of regular people do, eventhough they're NBA players, So that extra
million dollars helps a lot that cango anywhere from you know, paying rent
necessities, cars, you know, you know, the payments, all types
of stuff. So I think alot of people that actually be really invested
into it, even as much asthey did in a three point contest if
there was a bigger payout, becauseobviously, even if you get the million
(08:22):
dollars, it's still going to betaxed. You know, you're still gonna
lose about fifty percent of that, but that's still better than nothing to be
out there. If you go outthere and you're athletic and go out there
just threw up pull off, youknow, a couple of cool dunks,
and when half a million dollars, you know, you can't say no to
that, absolutely not. And Ithink, like you said, you're right,
like you may not get the superstarsthat come out, but you'll get
(08:46):
that next level of player that's stilla good name to where you know where
I'm gonna bring a little bit moreexcitement because you know, I'm in the
dunk contest if you're in, andagain, that extra million in your pocket
is always a good thing. Sowe're at seven fifteen and let's get to
(09:07):
our first break and John take usaway. We'll come back and talk a
little summer league basketball. Welcome backto EVE Sports Radio or Talk seven ninety
phone numbers five oh two, fiveseven one, seven, nine hundred.
You guys want to call in,anybody want to call in this morning and
talk him fash about the brand himself, Jerry East because we talk about him
(09:28):
enough. And here's the thing, and this is something that I need to
ask him, because he sent mea text message last night and at the
end of it he didn't say,you know, Coach, he didn't say
Jerry. He labeled himself the brand. So I wonder when he goes out
into the public and you know,Anthony, you see him around town,
(09:52):
like, does he address himself asthe brand when he's talking to other people?
You know? At this point,I don't know. I don't know
if he just sends it to meas like a statement or what. Because
for people who don't know, mydad is like one of the funniest people
on the planets because he'll send metext messages at night, or he'll send
me him in the morning with myselfand Coach Scott and he'll be like he'll
(10:15):
give me like a sometime I'll belike, he'll just ask me a random
question, will be like a motivationalspeech, but he'll do like he'll do
like a little hashtag like dad atthe bottom, And sometimes in my head,
I'm like, I wonder if hedoesn't know that I know this is
him texting me right now, becausehe just he'll do it on random messages.
Let me a full like paragraph andat the very bottom is like dad,
(10:37):
And like I'm like, hope heknows that I know that this is
him, But you know, likemaybe it's just like a something he just
got used to doing. I don'tknow. I haven't figured that out yet.
I've always wanted to ask him,but I always like forget, like
when the day comes around, becausethat's think one of those things you got
to ask him in person. Wehave the text message, he'll get like
mad at me and yell at me, but I'm like, no, I'm
just I genuinely want to know, like you do this just because you don't
(10:58):
think I know who this is,or you do this for your your own
educational purposes. At this point, right, you do have his numbers saved
in your phone Yeah, I gotthe number saved in here, so I'm
like, you know, at thispoint, just try to figured it out.
Yeah. He sends me this longtext messages of things to talk about
this morning, and at the verybottom of it just says the brand,
(11:20):
and it's just it's yeah. Soone thing I want to get into before
we get to the Summer League andwe're talking about you know, with the
summer League you have you know, the guys trying to make teams and everything.
But just very quickly, just theMLB draft, you know, with
a little local flavor here with Cincinnatiread they took it Chase Burns from Wake
(11:45):
far As as a number two pick, who's a pitcher. You know,
he's a guy that they're comparing tofall Schemes from the Pittsburgh Pirates. You
know, just the way he throwsthe ball. You know, he's in
the upper nineties and can get overone hundred one hundred miles an hour here
and there. So you know, big time pick for them, you know,
(12:07):
going to the College World Series, you look at the two local picks
from Kentucky, Ryan Walschmidt and EmilionPetrie. Ryan was the thirty first pick
and here's the interesting thing about baseball. You know when you look at the
(12:28):
different drafts, you know with theNBA Draft and the NFL draft, the
Major League Baseball they have they calledthe Prospect Promotion Incentive picks, which basically
means, if you pick a team, let's just say the Cincinnati Reds and
Chase Burns, if he is inthe top one hundred preseason prospects considered by
(12:54):
the MOB pipeline and Baseball America,if he goes on, if Chase Burns
goes on to win Rookie of theYear, then next year the Cincinnati Reds
get an extra first round draft pick. And that happens for both American League
and National League teams, which Ithink is a huge incentive for those teams.
(13:20):
And that's how Ryan Walshmidt was pickedby the Arizona Diamondbacks because Corbyn Carroll
after one of the Rookie of theYear last year for the Diamondbacks, so
they get an extra pick. Soagain, a little incentive for you know,
get your guys called up. Andyou know, for those that aren't
familiar with baseball, and you know, we talked about this, you know,
(13:43):
they have you know, many roundsof draft picks and because you have
the farm system, they call itbetween the single A, you know,
rookie ball, double A, andtriple A before you even get to the
majors. So you know, growingup and playing a little baseball, played
(14:05):
in college a little bit, anduh knew some guys that got drafted.
You know, it's a long runfor some of those guys to actually make
it to the majors. And youknow, think, man, think about
this. You know, you yousign a contract, professional contract, but
you're in the G league, youknow, basketball wise, like all your
(14:28):
life because you just can't make itup to the to the big time or
you sign a ten day and thenyou go back down. Like that's what
some of these guys are doing, like chasing the dream of trying to make
it to the majors. And whatpeople don't understand is that that minor league
baseball life just isn't all that's crackedup to be in a sense, because
(14:52):
you're taking buses everywhere, you're youmay be staying with a host family.
You know, the money is justnot great, but you're you know,
you're chasing the dream. So youknow, best of luck to you know,
the guys with Kentucky and you know, hopefully we see them, you
know, being you know, thehighest first and second round picks, hopefully,
(15:13):
you know, we'll see them soonerthan later. But you know,
best of luck to those guys. And you know, transferring over to now
the NBA Summer League and talking aboutguys trying to make a team. Uh,
you know, I caught caught alittle bit of the Lakers and Celtics
last night, and I had noidea anybody who's on that floor last night
watching them. Uh So let's talkabout some of the guys who did play
(15:37):
well yesterday and that in the summerLeague. And first name you mentioned to
me was Josh Christopher. And tellus a little bit about Josh and what
he did last night. Yeah. So, Josh Christopher, he's been known
who those who's been ever watching sincefollowing since high school basketball, has been
a very exposive player, you know, very flash ankle breaks. This very
(16:00):
athletic guard about six to three, maybe a little under six to four,
got picked up by the Houston Rockets. Well actually he was on the Houston
Rockets. He's on the Miami Heatnow. But he started off the game
a little bit rough, from thefield. In the first three quarters he
only had three points, but bythe end of the game he went on
a twenty zero scoring run by himselfin the fourth to finish off with twenty
(16:25):
three points. He tied the leaguescorer as well with Hami Hockwiz Junior,
who everybody knows. He's been anotable role player from the Miami Heat last
season, taking them deeper, tryingto take them deeper into the playoffs.
But they're playing the ok See Thunder. It was. That game was almost
a thirty point blowout. It wasone hundred and two to seventy three,
which was something crazy. Another crazystatistic that we are going to look at
(16:48):
as well as everybody's been talking about, you know, the flourishing of Cam
Whitmore and Reed Shepherd for the HoustonRockets. I will say this is probably
the worst game I've ever had.I think I think I've ever seen Cam
Whitmore have he played thirty minutes yesterday? Shot one for fifteen from the field,
oh for five from the three line. Five points. Now. I
(17:10):
know a lot of people do liketo criticize Bridy James because he has currently
not been able to make a shotfrom rialn Perimber. He is oh for
fourteen four games, but he doesget bashed a lot more than others.
And I hate to say this, you know, I might might get criticism
for it, but people aren't gonnatalk about Cam Whitmore going one for fifteen.
But if Briny James at one forfifteen, you would have thought,
(17:32):
you know, it was the endof the world. But it's one of
those things that we have seen CamWhitmore at the highest level as well,
even in the NBA as well andg League and Summer League. So when
he goes out there and has abad when he has a bad game,
you know, it's one of thosethings that it's almost like one of the
things is the player. You're like, it happens. You know, you
have those games where you just youjust can't buy a basket. For Brianny
(17:56):
James, this is not the samething because he ain't never bought a basket.
Okay, for somebody who has notbeen in the elite scorer ever.
You know, it's crazy. Peopleare like, oh, he's gonna develop,
you know, he's in the developingstage. He's gonna learn how to
score the basketball. It's one ofthose things, even when my dad was
on the show and we talked abouteven last week. He was never even
(18:18):
one of the top scorers on hishigh school team. He was in the
top scorer on his college team. And he's not going to be a top
scorer in the summer league. Soat some point, you know, after
you know, six seven years, eight years, it's at the point when
is he becoming a score. Hemay not ever be a score. He
may just be a role player. But the shoes that he is trying to
feel right now and the name thathe is playing behind being a role player
(18:41):
isn't necessarily going to work in hisfavor. And I hate to say that,
you know, I do feel thatevery person doesn't have to come in
and be the best score on thefloor, be an NBA superstar, because
that is very hard to do.And started to come in and average twenty
plus points a game consistently, nightin the night out like the you know,
the Kevin Durantz Lebron's have been doing, you know, the Devin Bookers,
(19:02):
those type caliber players. I hatedfor him, I really do do.
I think he's the worst kid onthe planet. No, but some
of the stuff he's said has beena little bit outlandis the last couple of
weeks, even from his statements sayingthat he pretty much doesn't care what anybody
thinks about what's going on for himin the summer league. He doesn't care
about opinions. It almost pissed meoff yesterday because he's had the worst summer
(19:26):
league that I've seen in so long. But then they're over posting on at
ESPN, like Brownie James beat GrantWilliams to win the Call of Duty Summer
League tournament, Like what what doyou mean the Call of Duty Summer League
tournament? But you' supposed to beout here playing basketball in that video games,
Like yeah, he he just getsoff and playing some league and just
goes home and play video games, and everybone's like I sear, he's just
a little game head that's out therejust playing basketball because of his last name.
(19:48):
At this point, I'm getting reallyclose to being convinced that that's true.
Like if you're out here getting morenotoriety for winning a Call of Duty
Summer League game or Summer League tournamentrather than you can't it hit a shot
as a six to one small forward. Because he never brings the ball before
and he runs the corner every possession. I just don't know where his fit.
(20:08):
I just don't know where his fitis going to be right now,
especially in the Lakers. Well, his fit's going to be at the end
of the bench. But you know, when you're struggling that bad and you
have to find something positive and youturn to the Call of Duty summer the
tournament as winning that that maybe thatcould be the problem because if you win
(20:32):
a tournament like that, you haveto put some time and you have to
put some practice in. So maybehe should have been in the gym more
than playing Call of Duty, youknow, growing up, and that may
have changed things a little bit.But people don't understand, you know,
from playing how hard it is toa score baskets consistently, but then be
(20:56):
like getting to that twenty point range. Like being able to score twenty points
in the game is tough enough asit is, but then being able to
score twenty points consistently throughout a season, throughout a stretch of ten games,
however many games you want to putit like, that's a lot harder than
(21:17):
people think it is, because it'syou know, it's part absolutely and you
know, it sounds easy, youknow, to even a score. Let's
say say you know, twenty pointsis five points a quarter. Okay,
well that doesn't sound too bad,but you know, the effort it takes,
the shots it takes to get that. You may not have the opportunity
(21:38):
to take that many shots to getyou twenty. But yeah, people,
people don't understand like playing sports, you know, home run derby, doing
extraordinary things like that's what you knowyour dad talked about, you know,
years ago to our guys like man, like, you know, people want
to see extraordinary things. That's whythey go to the games because you can
(22:03):
do things that other people can't do. And you know, for for Brianne
to be out there and you know, to stroll away, he is like,
you know, a he shouldn't beout there, but be like,
people don't understand how hard it isto be in a game like that and
four points and score points consistently. Some guys make it look easier than others.
(22:23):
So you think, oh, Ican do that, Well, no,
you can't. You know, it'svery difficult to be a consistent score
at the at any level, letalone the highest level of them all.
So you know, we're going toget to break. We'll come back talk
about this a little bit more,go into the the Olympic team and how
(22:45):
they performed yesterday, and then keepthe show moving from there. So John
take us away. Welcome back toEve's Sports Radio. This is Scott Bolwoods
again filling in for the brand JerryEves aka mister Loadan Kawhi Leonard taking a
break today. Uh, you knowthey say when you're in the NBA and
(23:06):
you have a little management, they'rechecking everything and the check engine light came
on. So apparently he was workinga little bit too hard and he had
to cool himself down and take alittle break for today. So here with
his son Anthony Eas and you know, talking little summer league basketball and the
criticism and the heat that Brianni Jamesis taken, you know, and and
(23:30):
I got a question for you.You know, like you played basketball,
you played at the highest level collegewise, and you know what kind of
I would say criticism, but likedid you ever have fans that you know,
were like after the game was overwith and they would ask you like,
you know, how come you didn'tdo certain things while you were playing
or you know, just really likewondering why like you played the way you
(23:53):
played after certain games. You know, I never had fans really come to
say that to my face. Ithink the only person I used to say
that was my dad, and Igot that about it, you know every
night. You know, my dadwas always you know obviously by saying my
mentor my coach father, you know, and my biggest fatigue on one person.
(24:15):
So you know, if I didn'tplay well, I'd hear it up
and down for days from my dad, and you know, it for me
and molded me into the person Iam today. You know, some days
and I was like, dang,I wish I didn't have to hear it,
like I knew and I played bad. You know, I got like
ten points. I was like,I'm about to get I'm about to get
yelled at in the car. ButI'm like, you know, I guess
I just got to accept it atthis point, like I can't can't change
(24:37):
the points anymore, like you just. I just couldn't get a shot.
I couldn't hit a lamp, Icouldn't get in the flow. I'm like,
oh, like I'm screwed. Afterthis game. Some games I played
so bad we'd stay in the gym. I kept my uniform on and everything
we work out in the gym aftereverybody left. So you know, as
you know, as a as ayoung kid and parents, you know,
if if you feel like you're evergoing to your hards than your kids,
(24:57):
I promise you you're not. Know. If you ever want to know what
going hard looks like, just callmy dad. You're like, oh,
being too hard, You're being toohard on them? Like, no,
you're not. If you really wantto make it to that next level,
even just playing college basketball in hisown realm, doesn't matter what the level
is. Whatever you think you're doing, you ain't doing enough. I used
(25:17):
to think the same thing. Ithought we thought we got enough shots off.
I thought we worked out enough thatday, as much work as I
put in and as much work asmy dad put in me that we invested
so much time. Even just toget where I was at at Chicago State
in that Division on level was stillhard. You know, it's crazy how
difficult to division and basketball. Andyou know, and I say that in
its own light, I think it'sgotten a little bit easier to make it
(25:41):
to the Division one level, honestly, in my opinion, because I'll go
watch high school games, the Trinitysaying next Ballard, you know, North
Old them Oldham County, and I'llsee kids playing out there, and some
of the kids I think do havea lot of talent and some potential,
and I'll watch them. I'm like, they're not bad, but they got
a lot of work to do,you know, they're rough on the edges.
And they're like, oh yeah, that kid offer by Texas Tech last
week. I'm like, you gottabe kidding me. I'm like, I'm
(26:03):
like, this is what they're handingout now, and it's crazy. They'll
be kids. They'll have six ACCoffers, you know, South Carolina,
Mississippi State. I'm like, there'sno way that they're offering them. I'm
like, they would have played basketballwhen I was playing. They wouldn't even
be a top three player on theteam. But you know, basketball changes,
the skill development changes. I thinkthe biggest thing with high school basketball
now there's a big gap drop offbetween the maturity level of some players.
(26:29):
You know, you get some ofthose high school players that are like Zion
Williamson, Scooper Flags, you know, that are in high school that are
just a lead in the you know, way above their talent of their age
range. And then you go seesome games of high schoo kids that are
juniors and seniors and they look likebank creators out there playing. I just
there's just I don't think there's agood medium like there used to be anymore,
you know, especially coming out ofrecruitment. You know, between like
(26:52):
the two and those three stars thatused to get ranked back in the day
were so much different. You couldlook at the NBA, A lot of
the NBA players for two and threeI didn't get a lot of notoriety.
Same thing with a lot of infilplayers too, a lot of two and
three stars that develop out through collegeand worked their way up. But even
when you look back on some oftheir high school highlights and you look back
on some of the film of them, a lot of those two stars are
(27:15):
still averaging seventeen eighteen points a gameand working very consistent to be two stars.
I was one of those two stars. I was at I averaged eighteen
and a half points a game,and I was a two star. So
you know, it's it's a lotabout you know, who you know,
where you're playing at plays a bigrole. You know, there's a lot
of public school kids that do welland have great potential, but they're not
going to get the same notoriety unlessyou go to one of those prep schools
(27:37):
or you're playing in like a bigknown, well named area. If you're
playing out in Kentucky and Louislle, you know, the recruiting market is not
as big as if you grew outto the Houston, Texas or Dallas,
you know, something like that. It's just it's one of those crazy things.
But I know, we've been talkingabout a lot about high school and
NBA things. One thing I didnot want to skip was our notoriety of
(28:00):
Cavin Clarks for those who are hatingOnton Caitlin Clark in the beginning of the
year because she was struggling to kindof get her feet under her. This
last month of July, she hasbeen in what we like to call rare
form. Just showing some of herstatistics everything from points, rebounds, assists,
steals, in blocks. The monthof July and points, she is
(28:21):
number one points, She's third inrebounding, first in assist, first in
steals, third in blocks. She'ssecond in double doubles. In twenty point
performances, she is tied for first, and her offensive rating is first.
The Indiana Fever have been making ahuge surge in the comeback of the standings
from where they start at the beginningof the year. You know, and
(28:44):
it's crazy, as she've been playingwell in the month of July. You
haven't seen any people talking about CavinClark. Now. She was getting pushed
around at first, getting knocked allover the place, hitting to the bleachers.
You know, they were left talkingabout, oh, seven turnovers to
the eight assists, even though halfthe assists her team literally just couldn't catch
the ball. When she's almost firstevery statistic, and she's tearing people up.
(29:06):
She's got girls, she's crossing girls, their overre tripping into her own
teammates. I saw it. Iwas like, Jesus Christ, you don't
hear about it as much unless you'reactually watching the game. You don't hear
about it. It's crazy thing.I've been keeping up with her games and
I didn't even hear about her.I was like, it's kind of surprising,
and then my dad sings, itwas crazy statistic this morning showing all
her stats for July, and it'syou know, they're astounding for a rookie.
(29:29):
But you know, it's still it'sstill amazes me that how she didn't
make the Olympic roster team. AndI know a lot of people are be
like, well, she didn't earnit, she didn't try out, or
you know, things like that. She's still a rookie. She has something
to prove in the WNBA. Iget it. But at the same time,
you know, this is like oneof those boats. Is she brings
so much notoriety to the game.It can't be any worse than putting Brian
James on the Lakers. Honestly,it's it's one of those same things.
(29:53):
If they put Brian James on theLaker for money in TV views, and
honestly, I don't even know howlong it's gonna lie because he can't score
a point. Like at this point, the Lakers risked a lot bringing him
onto the roster, and I hateto say it, they did it one
just to keep Lebron for another twoyears, which I understand that point,
but when you waste an opportunity ofthat, and too, I think a
(30:15):
lot of free agents didn't come backbecause they don't want to deal with the
little daddy. Some basketball going onin the locker room. It's it's kind
of kiddish, you know, It'sjust I don't know. It was it
was something funny I saw too,And they're like, if Briany James plays
on the court with his dad,I wonder if he's gonna be like dad.
I'm hoping in the corner, sohe's gonna call him Lebron's gonna call
(30:37):
him dad on the court that Iknow, I call my dad my first
name. I'm getting woolf. Idon't know. I don't know how he's
gonna work that situation now. Butyou know, I've also never worked with
my dad in that type of aspecteither, So you know, who's to
say. He might just call him. He might call Lebron out there.
I don't know, King James something. You got to find some type of
(30:59):
nickname out there. Other than that. I would have loved to see you
you play with your dad and callhim Cherry that let that would have let
that would have cussed me out.I wouldn't even be on team. He
probably would have threw the ball atyou, like literally threw the ball at
(31:21):
you. Not a two hand chestspass, but full, full blown baseball
pass you. Yeah, I didn'tplay any defense either, so you know,
it might have been one of thedownfalls on the squash. Wasn't the
greatest defensive player. I'm not gonnalie about that. I won't sit here
and gas my game up. Iwas. I was very average defensively.
(31:45):
But again it comes back to,you know, the effort and everything.
Like we were talking about how hardit is to even get to the college
level, and you you know, you work so hard, and you know
you have you know, Kate andClark, who's you know, that generational
talent who you know, the effortthat God knows, the effort that she
(32:06):
put in and the work that sheput in to get to where she was,
you know, and or you know, the parents out there listening,
like this isn't easy. You know, don't just think your kid just because
he plays like he you know,he deserves to be on a team.
Like as that level increases, likeyou know, those spots get smaller and
(32:28):
smaller, so you know, goingfrom high school to college, especially now
with the transfer portal. You know, we'll come back after the break,
but talk about that a little bitand the effort that you now need getting
out of high school to get intothe college level due to the transfer portal.
So John, take us away,we'll come back and talk a little
(32:49):
bit more college sports. Welcome backto the Sports Radio. This is Scott
Bowood again filling in for the brandJerry. E've got Anthony's on with us
this morning, and we're talking about, you know, the what it takes
to you know, play at thehighest level and the effort that it takes
and what you need to do andyou know, as is for those that
(33:10):
don't know, the landscape of collegesports has changed a lot with this transfer
portal and players being able to transferwithout having to sit out in the years
past. And I think, Anthony, when you were in college, if
you were to transfer from a Divisionone to a Division one, you'd have
to sit out. Now you don't, and you can transfer as many times
(33:34):
as you want now and continue toplay. You know, we're talking.
I'll talk to somebody where you knowhe played five different I was talking to
a gentleman down here in Florida. He mentioned a player and I forget his
name now, but he went toI think four different high schools and then
continue that going to college, goingto four different colleges. A year after
(33:58):
year or so in eight years hewent to eight different schools, and that
you're seeing that more and more now. And you know, for those that
are out there who are parents andhave kids who are aspiring to play in
college, the one advice I cangive to you is get your grades together.
(34:19):
Make sure they have the best gradespossible. I speak about this a
lot when I run basketball camps, and this is the message that I give.
And the example is, you know, Anthony, I'll use you,
you know, because you're so twostars, you know coming out of high
school. You know, back whenyou came out, and you know,
(34:40):
I want to for your age orsay how old you are, but you
know, at least you know, ten years ago, two scars may have
gotten you a Division one scholarship. Now it won't because coaches will just take
a Division one transfer even at alllevels. So you know if you have
(35:02):
and the way this works for againfor those that may not know, Division
one scholarship comes with everything tuition, room and board, books, everything,
everything's covered, so you don't haveto come out of pocket for anything.
So now again, if coaches aregoing to use that Division one scholarship,
(35:22):
they may use it on a transferinstead of a high school player. So
Division two. So what are someDivision two schools around there? We always
used you like, you know, like Kentucky State is one. Okay,
(35:43):
it's crazy. We don't have asmany dutwos in Kentucky. We have a
lot more n A high schools likeeven around the area, celt I u
S, University of the Cumberlands,Lindsey Wilson, you know, schools like
that, Campbellsville, gosh, wehave we have tons. With the Tennessee
DT's, they really haven't got aspopular as they used to more honestly,
(36:08):
all right, So even with theNAIA in your area, Okay, it
is true, they have a lotout there. So you know, even
NAIs, you can take academic moneyand athletic money and combine and get a
full scholarship that way. So youknow, Anthony, you know, again,
(36:30):
I won't go into your grades comingout of high school, but you
know, if you have if youhave let's say straight a's right, and
a school like like Georgetown out thereCampbellsville. You know, a coach I'm
recruiting you and you have great gradesin the school said, you know what,
we're gonna give you, you know, because your grades are so good,
(36:52):
thirty thousand dollars on a forty thousanddollars scholarship and you get some financial
aid and now you may only haveto pay five thousand on a forty thousand
dollars education, right compared to ifyou barely, you know, get through
academically where you maybe have all seesAnd now you know they say, well,
(37:15):
we're only going to give you tenthousand on a forty thousand dollars scholarship.
Now that coach has to determine howmuch of his scholarship money he wants
to use to try and get youto come there. So parents, just
make sure you know the grades arewhere they're supposed to be, and you
know all a's if you can takehonors classes. Can't stress it enough.
(37:37):
Just make sure you're working as hardas you can in the classroom and even
harder on the basketball court because youjust don't know, you know where those
offers and opportunities may come from. But it's it's a tough thing and people
don't understand the effort you have toput in and how many shots today would
(38:00):
you shoot? During the season andthe off season all season, it would
probably be anywhere, you know, close to one thousand a day. Probably
during the season, it'd be acouple of hundred. You know, I'd
work out in the morning before school, then I'd have my school practice,
and then I'll work out after practice. So you know, it could be
(38:21):
anywhere from you know, a coupleof hundred. All season, it was
definitely probably a couple of thousand aweek most likely. Yeah, so you
know, I'm starting to hear themusic in the background, so we've got
to wrap it up. But yeah, so I mean, parents and kids,
make sure you're putting in that workright now, all the extra work
you need in the summer. Andanother great show today and I don't know
(38:43):
when we'll be on together again, but looking forward to it. And everybody
in City of Louisville have a greatday and stay safe on those roads.
