Comedy off Broway looking back.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
It is Kentucky Sports Radio here on an unbelievable day
that we didn't think we'd see. Monday, April the eighth,
here in Lexington. We are at the KS Bar and Grill.
We already got TV stations here, everybody uh watching, got
folks already interviewed.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
You can give us a shout.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
We'll open up the phones after this segment on the
Clark's Puppings Up Phone line eight five nine two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven. A Vision Auto Glass text
machine seven seven two seven seven four five two five
four in this edition sponsored by the TJSMID office called
Tj'll make Them Pay I'm you know, we have a
brand new group of listeners coming in. We've already done
an hour. Obviously, John cal Perry has left Kentucky and
(01:07):
will be the new coach at Arkansas. A shocking chain
of events, but one that I think ultimately can be
a positive for Kentucky. A lot of folks are writing
in for questions, and I want to hear what the
general public thinks. And we're going to open up the
phones here in just a minute. Let's talk about this.
Just yes or no answer? Is Kentucky? Was this a
(01:30):
good thing to happen for Kentucky long term?
Speaker 4 (01:33):
See I'm in the boat that My answer is yes.
I just think the timing was right. It was, like
I said, time for cal to get a fresh start,
and time for Big Blue Nation to get a fresh
start in the program, to get a fresh start. So
it's like, I think the timing is probably right.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
So I go, yes, do you think it's like with Tubby? Yes,
that was the right That was certainly the right time
for that.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
And it's so early familiar where Tubby's you know, early
years were so good and then kind of tapered off
at the end. A school comes out of nowhere at
courts him and boom just like that, super quick and
half a day he's gone.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
It's also worth noting, though they got turned down by
Chris Beard and Jerome Tang before they went to Cal,
which is a really strange chain of abits. Was the
Arkansas Little Rock No, I mean, their other contender was
Arkansas Little Rock and Will Wade. Those were the two
that they were looking at. Was Arkansas Little Rock guy
and Will Wade.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
What do you think, Yes, I do.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
I think it was inevitable Cal was gonna run this
next season back with the same things that he's been
doing the last four or five years, and we would
have just been in the same situation a year from now.
So it saves Kentucky thirty four million dollars and now
Kentucky can jump in that pool and find somebody else.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
So let's go back to my optimistic view.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
All right, Okay, So first of all, this next year,
if you were ever going to lose Cow first, we
always knew, all of us knew the year Col left,
the next year we would lose all of our players.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
We all knew that, right, That's part of the that's
part of the Cow wager.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
You get good immediately, but then you collapse when it's over.
But now you don't have to collapse because of the
transfer portal. We can put a good team on the
floor next year. I mean, there are teams right now
that went to the Sweet sixteen or Elite eight that
had a completely different roster than they had this year.
South Carolina's women just won the national championship with a
(03:20):
completely different roster than the roster they won the national championship.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
With last year. Like, you can go and do it.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
So if there was ever gonna be a time for
him to leave, Ryan, this is as good as it
was gonna be.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
So you know, they couldn't.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
The new coach, whoever it might be, has that advantage
that other coach had not had it because they can
go rebuild with the transfer portal immediately.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
Will we have any player on the roster now stay
or any of the freshmen coming in? Travis Perry, right,
he'd might Travis Perry, maybe Reed Shepherd pipe dream, but
maybe everyone else gone.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Assume that's happening.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Just assume we won't get any of the None of
the recruits will be here, none of the players currently
on the team. I think between me and you there
was only like two currently on the team that even
had a shot to come back anyway. I think DJ
Wagner might have come back, and I think Z might
have come back.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
The rest of them, I think we're gone.
Speaker 6 (04:21):
We assume that they're all gonna follow him to Arkansas also.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
So I think some of them will, but I think
some of them might not. I mean, I think, you know,
you gotta want to live in Arkansas. Now, I do
think most of them will, maybe they all will. But
here's the thing. What made us think this was gonna
be any better next year? Like what made us think
relying on freshman next year was gonna be better than
(04:44):
relying on freshman this year?
Speaker 6 (04:46):
We probably would have seen a lot of the same.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Been a lot of the same.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yeah, it would have been probably a lot of the same.
Kentucky Basketball. Now, there are some things we've accepted for
ten years that are gonna change in a positive way.
Our ad is gonna have a relationship with the new coach.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Think about that.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Our football and basketball coaches are not gonna hate each other.
The football and basketball coaches despised each other for the
last three years, Like don't over they despised each other.
That's gone now right, Right, You're gonna have a coach
(05:28):
who talks to the local media. You're gonna have a
coach who does his pregame show.
Speaker 6 (05:33):
How about that.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
You're gonna have a coach that doesn't like run away
from being in public with folks like You're gonna have
a coach that's like cow was the first few years.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
We haven't had that in a decade.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
I get some players whose sole focus is on Kentucky
and not going to the NBA.
Speaker 6 (05:52):
You're gonna get some.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Players who stay here for a little while. Yeah, I mean, now,
what are we gonna lose. We're gonna lose being the
guy that on draft night our coaches up there watching
all the dudes get picked, And while that was cool,
I'd like to be the one playing the night.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Right, How many of those good dudes for Purdue are
gonna be drafted?
Speaker 3 (06:18):
One, one, maybe three from Yukon? Would you rather be
playing tonight?
Speaker 6 (06:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
For sure, that's what we're gonna have. I think we'll
be back to that. I genuinely do. Somebody writes who's
gonna be in a Final four again? First cal or Kentucky?
Speaker 5 (06:38):
Well, you know, kind of like you said, Matt, you
could just rebuild immediately.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Now you get the right coach, we'll be good next year. Now,
I think it would be unrealistic to say we're gonna
win a title. Good, But let me just let's go
say you get NATO's You don't think he can put
a team team together next year?
Speaker 6 (06:56):
Certainly he did it this year.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
He did it this year.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Their starting lineup is completely different than it was last year,
and he got him in the final four.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
I mean, Cal may have to play his own in
the tournament. I mean the preparations on a different level
with some of the teams that we've seen in the
find You don't think on.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
The transfer portal. Every single person out there now sees
that one of the maybe the best program in the
country has a lot of playing time available, need some players,
and need some players, right, I mean, I I just
see it as an opportunity. We're gonna lose Boogie Flann
(07:31):
and Jaden Qua. We're gonna lose those guys, and that stinks.
You know, I'd love to have them, But Ryan, this
was coming one day anyway. Now it's just here now.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
And buve we We've said fifteen times already. The timing
just seems to be best for all parties involved, including Cal.
It time for him to move on and get a
fresh start. I hate the fact it's in an sec rival,
but that's where he wants to go.
Speaker 6 (07:54):
That's what the decision he made.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
What go ahead.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
I'm gonna ask you this because IVE had a couple
of people text me this. I'm just gonna they said basically,
they feel like a little bit of a fool from
that press conference there.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
They should have never believed it to begin with. Again,
if you watched that press conference, if you watched that
meeting with Barnhart and Cal and thought that that meant
all was good, that's on you, man, Like you gotta
be like, remember what my reaction was after that. You
weren't here, I don't think, but you remember what my
reaction was after I saw that what. I'm glad they
(08:30):
did it, but it changed nothing for me because I
feel bad by the way. You guys can have a
seat wherever you want. I feel bad because like I'm
not trying to be but I want to say to
people I've been telling you guys, you cannot believe you
can believe what is told to you by public figures,
(08:53):
or you can just accept reality.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Those two guys did not like each other.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
And them sitting there and doing a press conference or
doing an interview did not change that for me one bit.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Ryan did it, you know, because we knew, we knew
the behind the scenes. But I think a lot of people,
I think took it at their word.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
But everybody's been telling people. They just didn't want to
believe it, you know. For all the Matt was like, angry,
what about Kyle Tucker? Why would he write all that
he was he was Cayle's guy for two years? Yeah,
why would TJ Bisner leave?
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Why would j Lucas? Like the signs were there, you
just didn't want to hear some people.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
So no, I don't feel like a fool because I
never thought it'd be anything anyway. But you didn't either.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
No, but I think, you know, like one guy said, man,
and when Cal looked right in the camera and said
this is where I want to be. I want to
be here, he said. I believed him when he said that,
And now we find out he was talking to Ohio
State in February.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
I did, I mean, I didn't believe him.
Speaker 5 (09:59):
It was the same talking points from the radio show.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
I don't think I don't think cal is a dishonest
or a bad person.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
But have we not learned?
Speaker 3 (10:09):
You couldn't believe what he said, the like Severe Wheeler's
coming back.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
I mean like.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
This was out for people to see. So no, I
was the only thing. Here's the only things I'm surprised about.
I'm surprised he went in conference and he's gonna have
to play here at RUP. That's the only thing I'm
surprised about. I thought it was possibly take another job.
I'm surprised he chose to take one where he's gonna
have to walk in here next year.
Speaker 6 (10:40):
Did he also talk to USC? I saw that Florida
around some.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
And that's the one I always thought he was gonna.
Speaker 6 (10:45):
Tell I can see that that's the.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
One I thought he was gonna take. But you know,
this is this is going to be the right thing.
It just is that John cal Perry had a great
legacy here, but this was falling apart behind the scenes.
(11:08):
The the n Aisle thing they put up and asked
for a million dollars and they had fifty thousand.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
They were shocked. You know who wasn't shocked?
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Me?
Speaker 2 (11:19):
I knew that was gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
They had no they had no idea where this fan
base was. That's the biggest, the biggest telling point is
this Caliperry and his folks had no idea how deep
the fan base was frustrated because they had cut themselves
off from the fan base. So when the Oakland game hit,
(11:42):
I've talked about this, you could feel it in the building. Yeah,
it were any of you there. When he walked off
the court, Drew and I looked at each other.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Game was over.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
I think you know they were fouled at the end
a little bit, and we were about to walk off,
and I said, Drew, hang on, I want to watch
the last minute because I think this might be the
last time we ever see cow. And there's a video
I posted last night. It's kind of eerie actually of
him walking off the court. CBS like doesn't talk and
just lets the sound run. It was great directing by
(12:14):
whoever did that. And as you walk off in the building,
you could just feel it was different. You could just
feel this fan base it's not gonna work.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
You could feel it in there.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Yeah, there was a fan leading on with a railing
as he walked off, said Cal, is this the gold standard?
Is this the gold standard?
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Cal?
Speaker 6 (12:35):
He just you know, yelling at him as he walked off.
That the floor of that time.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
So what about the report from John Fanta that cal
Perry said he didn't feel wanted or supported.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Well, it goes back to winning. I think that would
change if he was winning actual games. But you know
what was telling for me is when that store owner
called KSR that wanted to give money for Nil and
couldn't do it. I mean, it seems like cal has
absolutely checked out in several different aspects of coaching, and
now it reinvigorates both sides.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Last night I couldn't sleep, so I was trying to
think of like what today was gonna be like, and
I decided I am going to write a post today.
I made a commitment to ours, to myself, and here
it's here. I'm gonna give you the gist of it.
Cal Perry's not the coach here anymore, in large part
because he lost three guys Dwayne Peevee, Kenny Payne and
John Ropick that represented the three parts of his personality
(13:27):
that were a little weak, but they made up for it.
And then when he lost those three. He never replaced it,
and that's why he's not the coach here anymore. With Dwayne,
he lost the connection to the fans and the administration.
A guy who Dwayne felt the pulse of Big Blue Nation.
He understood it. He understood what the fans thought, and
(13:50):
he understood how Mitch thought. And he was able to
communicate callisms to Mitch and the fans and they trusted him,
rusted him.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
It worked.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
With Kenny Payne, he lost the guy who understood how
to deal with these players. Cow's a lot and Kenny
Payne was the player whisper. I know he didn't succeed
at Louisville, but what Kenny Payne would show up at
the gym and two in the morning and work these
players out. And when Cal was screaming at people and
they were like, I can't deal with this anymore, they'd
go to Cal, or go to Kenny Payne and he
(14:24):
would help them. And then with Robic, they lost the
basketball mind. They lost the X and O guy who goes,
all right, we're playing Florida this week, what's their weakness?
How do we exploit it? And Cal would listen to him.
They lost all three of those guys in one year
(14:44):
from twenty nineteen to twenty twenty, and it was never
the same. No, it was never the same those three.
If you want to say, at the end of the day,
what did it end losing those three guys back to
back to back.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
To me, he is ultimately what did end the callier?
Speaker 4 (15:02):
Yeah, because they kind of all just left it round
the same time. That's a big void to fill now
going into this season. This time last week talking about
Kol's got to get some shooters, he's got to get
a game prep guy.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
He's got to make some staff change.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
They were gonna make no changes. They were gonna make
no staff changes. When I heard that, I could not
believe it. I could not believe but that that's what
was gonna happen. He's gonna you've already seen the reports.
He's putting Brad on the staff at Arkansas.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
He wanted to do that here. I'm not sure that
UK was gonna let him or not. I don't know,
but he wanted to.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
And I'll note Tubby Smith when he left, what was
one of the issues Saul.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
He wanted to put Saul on the staff. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
Time is a circle. I mean, like time is a circle.
Sometimes it repeats itself. We'll take a break, We're gonna
open the phones A five nine two eighty seven. What
do you think about all this? This is Kazonger. I
like this song. It ends with him saying he won't
(16:06):
go back to Arkansas. I don't think I'm gonna go
back to Arkansas either, although Bobby Bones is gonna join
us at ten thirty. He'll kind of tell us how
he thinks it went down on the Arkansas side, which
I'm actually fascinated, Like how did it all play out
for Arkansas?
Speaker 2 (16:19):
You know?
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Yeah, whether you know the old story was when they
Kentucky hired Eddie Sutton from Arkansas. Eddie said something like
I'd crawled to Lexington to take that job from Arkansas.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Well, unless you've been Totville, you ain't crawling.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
There's gonna be you getting broken glass on the side
of the road if you do that, So you better
be careful. It's gonna be it'll be interesting, remember it,
like that's that's a good job. But they're gonna have
expectations now. I mean they've been to the Elite eight
two in the last four years. They haven't been terrible.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
And they had two coaches turned them down before Cal
and Chris Beard and Drumtown.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
And also remember Andy Enfield. Enfield of USC goes to
s MU. Yeah, when I heard that, I thought that
it's weird. Why is the coach at USC going to SMU,
which leads to Muscleman going to USC, which leads to
Cal to Arkansas. It's amazing how the dominoes end up working.
(17:12):
One person writes, Matt, what do you think he meant?
Mitch mint or excuse me? Cal meant when he said
he didn't have support here? I think he meant two things,
fan support and in ile. I think the anile thing.
I think they just I think he expected, well, I
know he expected. He expected all the people that have
(17:35):
been giving to football. Football has killed it with the Anniles.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
Now.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
I mean, they still got to do better. They got
their own nil issues in terms of money raising, but
they've done a lot better than I think anybody thought.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
And I think Cal was like, where's the basketball? But
here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
People who give that kind of money, you gotta treat
him a certain kind of way, you know what I mean,
Like it's their money, and Cal.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Just has kind of done his own thing for a long.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Time, and those big money people with a new coach
probably will be more.
Speaker 6 (18:11):
Inclined to donate more money.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
Mark Stoops wins a big game, all right, Let's say
Mark Stoops wins a big game.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
You know what he does.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
He has the biggest donors and Nile boosters to his
house and he hosts them for a celebration. You think
John cal Perry does that, No, And that makes a
difference people. How you treat people matters to people, and
I think I think that's been a huge thing. Mark
Stoops and Vince Merriw have individually cultivated football donors in
(18:41):
a way.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
That cal has not in basketball.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
And I think he thought UK would take care of itself,
and it does with kids out of high school, but
I don't think it does with the transfer portal.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
And I think that's where they were surprised. All right,
who's up first? John, Nate? Nate? What do you think?
Nate wowing?
Speaker 7 (19:00):
Like being the first call on this type of a day,
no pressure, having an eclipse today and all this other craziness.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Going on in the world. Clips Wow, for what's happening.
Speaker 7 (19:11):
I was on Twitter till four am last night, which
was crazy. I was on your space. One of the
most telling things that I noticed where people need to
calm down. At eleven thirty at night, Arkansas was hosting
a Twitter space as well, twenty two hundred and I
think yours hit twenty two thousand at one point it did.
That is a massive difference in the fan base. But
just to kind of go over a couple of things
(19:32):
that real quick, yeah, yeah, sure sure. Justin Rowland tweeted
out that that Yukon was very worried, and then Trilly
Donovan just released that Natos is not going to be
an option for Kentucky, that he's heard from multiple sources
there and just kind of wanted to get your all
speedback is this is like a really big thing.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
So we'll hear a ton of stuff here, a ton
of stuff. And I appreciate the call. Because we went
on at nine, I have not been able to make
any calls to get like names and seriousness.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
I'm gonna be spending all afternoon on that.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
So when it comes to names, I don't know anything
right now, because I wasn't gonna call everybody at seven
point thirty in the morning. I was up till two,
and everybody's still processing. This afternoon, the name thing will
start to be clear. If Danny Hurley's interested, then go
get it. If NATO's is not interested, then that is
(20:25):
what it is like. I want him to be interested,
but if he's not, he's not. I would just say
let that play out for a few hours, for twenty
four hours, I think there's a lot of times that
you know, you gotta see how it happens.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
So let's see.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
I think we'll know a lot more about all this
ryan tomorrow morning. At this time when it comes to names.
Right now, I'm gonna treat all speculation as just that, yeah,
because I will say this, Mitch will not tell you
who he's really looking at until he's ready, So we'll see.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
He's a guy like was on mitchie shortlist one time,
Shaka Smart, get her revisit this time around.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
I know that's the next tier down, yep, but not
crazy Yeah.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
Yeah, And then we start throwing ams out there like
Bruce Pearl, right.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
I think because of what happened in the last couple
of years, everybody's on the table. If this happened two
years ago, Mitch would not have hired a coach like
Cal He'd have gone and hired Scott Drew this time.
I think everybody's on the table. He knows it's an
(21:35):
inflection point. I think everybody's on the table, and it's
just a question of the money won't be an issue though.
We'll take a break. Come back, Bobby Bones is going
to join us. We'll take your calls. This is KSR.
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Welcome back Tekey Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
All right, Bobby Bones, iHeartRadio personality on every television show
in America. And a friend of mine is here with us,
and Bobby's a huge Arkansas fan. So let's just start
with this. Bobby cal Perry, coach Arkansas. Did it make
you happy?
Speaker 8 (22:03):
Yes, it makes me very happy. But I think what
makes me extremely happy is the money that they've committed
to nil with John Calipari. I mean, if we get
cal that's awesome. We wanted to splash higher. Obviously it's
all about splash. Then it's you know, substance after splash.
But the fact that they've committed so much money to
NIL with a guy who obviously you know better than anyone,
(22:24):
can use that money in amazing ways. Like I'm super
pumped today. I mean, Matt and I were talking last
night and I said, hey, don't say anything I'm saying.
I started to not get texts back about midday yesterday,
which means not that people don't like me, but I
have a pretty good little system up there. I will
just say the high the big dollars, or the people
(22:45):
making decisions. And it's when I stop hearing texts back.
It means they can't tell me for a while more
than they don't want to tell me. And that's when
I figured that the Cal stuff was starting to really
come to a head one way or the other.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
So that's mid afternoon.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
So like now that you've had this morning, I know
you had your show, but like, how do you think
it went down? I mean, I know you don't know
for sure, but on the Arkansas side, how do you
think it went down? How'd they end up with Cal? Well?
Speaker 8 (23:14):
I think we aimed for Chris Beard because we felt
like we were getting Chris Beard, and I think every
indication was Chris Beard was coming to Arkansas and last
minute ole miss listen. That program has been using their
money very wisely. They've done it in football and basketball.
They made Beard a really great offer and he felt
that he would stay. So then we didn't have Beard,
(23:35):
And I can say that you know some of the
other candidates that they were talking to, and I'll just
name them in order, so I'm not associating myself with
any of them, but Will Wade or Jans or you
can go down. I was in a bit of conversation
with at least one of them, and it was going
pretty good where everyone kind of thought that one of
those options was going to be it. And my feeling
(23:57):
is that mister t who has a great relationship with
Coach Cal obviously and so to his sons, my feeling
is that for the first time in a while, mister
Tyson said, you know, I'm happy to inject some money
into the situation and did and you know, and listen,
Cal probably wanted to get out of Kentucky as much
(24:20):
as Kentucky wanted to get out of Cal.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Right, I feel like you think the Tyson Chicken guys.
Speaker 8 (24:25):
Absolutely absolutely Arkansas, the I think Hunter, you're achech did
a great job of feeling after the Listen. This is
all speculation, right, speculation from like three different people that
are semi connected, because again, they stopped texting with me,
So I think that that was the closer I think
that is a lot of the money. I think that
(24:47):
is at least the backing of if you need it,
I'm here, and that more than has been in the
past with mister Tyson and his sons.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Ever, so that's a big part of it too, right,
is that the Tyson Chicken family, who has not really
been donating in the current Arkansas era, has said, if
you get Cal, we'll start donating.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
Is that kind of Is that correct?
Speaker 8 (25:11):
I can't say that it's absolutely correct, because again I'm
not in those If I were recreating though that, if
I were rewriting the movie, I would say, yes, that
was that would be a scene that I would write
in going I would go to Cal party and listen.
I don't know, but Coach Cal probably let somebody know, hey,
I'm over here, because I know they started talking on
(25:31):
Friday last week. So in the midst of the Beard situation,
my indicator and I didn't believe it. Though, Honestly, when
I heard that, I thought it was really just a
bunch of people before Sunday.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
You would not be able to get a deal like
that agreed to before Sunday, so Friday would make some sense.
Did you get any indication did.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Cal go there.
Speaker 8 (25:54):
There was a plane track to Kentucky way or before
he left, before he left to go where where was he?
Was he in Phoenix?
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Or he was in Phoenix? Yes, he was in Phoenix
for the Thursday night. He was in Phoenix for the
Antonio Reeves thing.
Speaker 8 (26:13):
There. I'm just there. There there's some privileged information that
I cannot say because I do not want to.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
That's what we're gonna do. We got it.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
We gotta find somebody to track the plane from Phoenix
to Fayetteville and see if there was one, uh, if
there was one there?
Speaker 2 (26:28):
All right, So you all hated Cal for a long time.
Speaker 8 (26:32):
You hated him.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
People get over that quickly. How beloved will he be
when he starts calling the Hogs?
Speaker 8 (26:38):
But you know why we hated him, right because he
was awesome and you guys are freaking Kentucky. We hated
Will Wade too out of loved Will Wade at Arkansas
and you know, and for a different reason, but we
hate the people that. It's like me being an Arkansas fan,
like I hate the Texas Longhorns, but it's because they're
the big brother in football like that, I hate Kentucky
as a basketball team, but not because I hate the
(26:59):
people in it, but because for years and years, you
guys have pounded us the same reason I hate Cal.
We'd love to see him. We'd love to see him
get ejected. We played that clip of him getting thrown
out of the game during our games, and you gotta
beat us in that game, like that's how much we
hated Col.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
So he did get thrown out down there twice, I think.
Speaker 8 (27:14):
Yeah, yeah, and then you beat us. But he's going
to be beloved if he comes and if he wins.
Who I think is probably like a little irritated, not upset,
a little irritated is Musk because I love Musk. By
the way, I hated to see Musk go, but we
all knew Musk was going to go back to California
at some point, and all the domino started to fall
once USC took the SC coach, and you know, I
(27:37):
was texting on Must during the process. Hated to see
him go, but Must didn't have the resources that Cal's
gonna have, and Cow's going to have them immediately.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Bobby Bones, thank you very much. Take good care of Cal.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
I think this can be a win win for everybody,
So I wish you the best and hopefully we'll see
up here.
Speaker 8 (27:54):
Yeah let me let me let me ask you one question.
And I know you're probably run out of time, but
do you like Cal as a person? And secondly, I've
always tried to not fly too close to the sun.
I'm a pretty big donor. I'm a pretty big an
IL guy. But I don't want to get too close
to the program if I don't like the person, because
I don't want to not like the team. I don't
want to. I don't want to root against any part
(28:15):
of what I love more than anything other than my wife.
So what am I gonna want to be friends?
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Yeah? No, you'll love me, You'll love him. So here's what.
Here's how I want to answer your question.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
For ten years, I loved Cal as a First of all,
I still think Cal's a great person. Put everything else aside.
He's a great person. You will love it. I don't
think there's any doubt. For ten years, he was wonderful
to me. And as I've said many times, I started
KSR before Cal, but he was a big, huge part
(28:46):
of taking it to the next level.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
I will always owe him for that.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Things changed in the last four years not just with
me and him, just in general. But if he gets back,
if you get the cow where he is cal at
his best, which I think you will, you guys will
love him. He has but he is a He is
a good person with a good heart. And uh, yes,
so do I think to answer your question, do I
(29:11):
think he's a good person?
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Yes? I do? Are we are?
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Were he and I close at the end? I think
it's fairly obvious. The answer was no.
Speaker 8 (29:18):
Do you Who is your list of four coaches that
you think you can get and you want?
Speaker 2 (29:25):
All right, so can get?
Speaker 3 (29:27):
I don't know what in order would be Danny Hurley,
Billy Billy Donovan, Natoates.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Well, excuse me, let me take this back.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
Danny Hurley, Jay Wright, Billy Donovan, Natots. There are other
people I would be satisfied with, but those are the four.
If you gave me one of those four, I'm jumping
up and down for the next week. If you give
me one in the next group, which I think includes
Scott Drew and probably other names that I don't know yet,
(30:04):
I'm gonna be fine with it.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
But they're gonna have some proving to do.
Speaker 8 (30:09):
I think, no chance, Jay right, no chance Hurley. I
don't think Right wants to coach anymore in this environment,
and hardly no chance he went. Another national championship Natos
would be awesome.
Speaker 3 (30:17):
I'm rooting for Purdue tonight. The perfect time to leave
is if you listen, Hey, let us dream. A week
ago you thought you were getting the coach at Little Rock,
all right, so let us dream.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Bobby.
Speaker 8 (30:29):
No, we did it, and I will not accept that.
But I'm hoping you guys get a really good coach.
I cannot wait to come to Rupp and it's gonna
be awesome to hear those booze. But it's gonna create
the rivalry that we have thought we've had forever and
has just slightly been introduced every five or six years.
So good luck to you guys, appreciate you guys as well,
and we'll talk to you guys soon.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Thank you for coming company of Bobby Bones. There you go,
So says he thinks it started Friday.
Speaker 4 (30:54):
That's my biggest takeaway of everything that he said. So
you know, it kind of snowballed in two hours last night. No,
that's not true. If they were really starting to talk
on Fry, a lot of things got worked out before
we even.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Checked the check the planes from Phoenix to fav uh huh.
And because he was in he was in Phoenix Thursday night.
But now Bobby says in Fayetteville front.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
And according to Matt Norlander's reporting, Cal had to tell
Mitch if he was ever in contract talks, and he
wasn't told until after midnight.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
That's a whole nother. That's a whole nother. So did
did Matt Norlander finally say he was told?
Speaker 6 (31:25):
I don't think.
Speaker 5 (31:26):
I don't know if he ever did, but I think
those reports started coming out eventually this morning.
Speaker 2 (31:30):
It is the sequence of events is fascinating. It is
to me like what is what is the time frame?
Where where it where it goes? I think that will
be fascinating.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
All right, Uh, for those of you on hold, I'm
going to take about four or five calls in the
next break. I want to hear I kind of want
to hear what the fans think. Are you excited, are
you nervous? Are you happy? We'll do like a rapid
fire if I want to hear what everybody says. But first,
clear cut, hero, the hydration drink that's changing the game.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Billy, look at this right here.
Speaker 6 (31:58):
Look at that.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Look at pecks Fruit pro Unch, Cosmic blue ras and
dragon Fruit Nova, Orange Nexus, Peach Mango and he clips
lemon lime.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
It's right here. It's a clear cut hero.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
Grab your variety packet Amazon today and get it. Even
if you're worried about the coaching, you can still hydrate.
We will take a break. I want to hear what
the UK fans think. Next here our Kiazar, welcome back.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Take you sports? Ready, all right, I do want to
hear from some collars.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
Just do me a favor, okay, in order to get
as many people, like thirty seconds. You don't need to
do the intro about how long you've been a fan, like,
just just let me know your opinion. And because I
want to hear what people what people think about this,
so ready, let's do this, right you go, Let's go,
John go, who's up first?
Speaker 2 (32:44):
Luke, Luke go? Luke?
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Hey, Matt, uh, I just want to say, I think
I found a flight from Phoenix to Arkansas.
Speaker 7 (32:53):
Here looks like.
Speaker 9 (32:57):
Five thirty when he was landed.
Speaker 7 (32:59):
Maybe uh it wasn't direct to Fayetteville, but it was
to I think Springdale, just the town north of it,
which which.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Is it a private jet? He wouldn't have flown commercial,
is it?
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Is it a jet yet?
Speaker 10 (33:11):
Yes, it's a Hawker eight hundred's.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Gotta be that's gotta be it, right.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
That's if he landed at five thirty in the morning
Friday after he was there Thursday night, that's gotta be it.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
And it's a five five thirty in the afternoon.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
Five thirty after, that's gotta be it. Right.
Speaker 10 (33:27):
Yeah, I would think so, because the registration is private.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
And I mean I was I was checking.
Speaker 7 (33:31):
I'm a pilot myself, and I was checking everything and.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
All right, good stuff. I appreciate it, Luke, that's gotta
be it.
Speaker 3 (33:38):
I mean, we don't know. But like he was in Phoenix.
There's a flight from Phoenix to Fayetteville. How many people
The only person that would have flown from Phoenix to
Faetteville is what muscleman?
Speaker 6 (33:48):
Yeah, and he's in Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
But he was in Los Angeles, so it's gotta be.
That's gotta be it.
Speaker 5 (33:55):
We found it in five minutes.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
See BBN, they know everything. Who's next of Dylan?
Speaker 10 (34:00):
Dylan go, I'm nervous about the immediate success. I think
it's fair or important to have fair expectations. But as
far as I'm concerned, I'm a Cat fan, not a
Cow fan. I think Cow is a snake and I
think he's a fraud. I'll pay any amount of money
it takes to be enroupt to boo him out of
(34:21):
the building next season, and I hope he loses every.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
Game he plays. All Right, Well, that's a harsh binion.
I appreciate the call. How much of the fan base
do you think has that view? So that's not the
view I have, But how many how much of the
fan base do you think has that harsh of an opinion?
Speaker 6 (34:40):
I bet it's about fifteen percent?
Speaker 2 (34:43):
Maybe, Yeah, what do you think, Bill?
Speaker 5 (34:44):
I was gonna go higher. I was thinking twenty five percent.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
You're I mean, you're the harsh And now we haven't
heard from Drew and Shannon.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
I'll be interested.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
I'm gonna be interested what Drew's take is because I
can say that Drew's at the Masters. What a day
to miss. But the Masters is a good excuse. Drew
was more done than I was. I mean, if you're
ranking the KSR people and how done they were, I
think it's fair to say Drew was the most.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Number one, would you agree, Yes.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Tyler was pretty done too. Drew and Tyler were pretty done.
I think like, I'm the one that takes the public arrows,
but Drew was a lot more done than me.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
Where were you? You think you were more or less
done than me?
Speaker 4 (35:29):
I when the game ended, I was convinced there needs
to be a change, and then I kind of had
to let myself suck back into all right, well you
believe that.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
I believe one more year, let's go.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
But see, in some ways you are.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
I think a lot of fans after it was over,
you're like, I'm done, and then you.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
Saw him and you go, okay, one more time.
Speaker 6 (35:51):
Look how much Look how friendly they are with each other.
They're big friends.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
You're the reason we have political advertisements in this country.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
It's you. We'll always go. Who is it that these
advertisements work on?
Speaker 9 (36:03):
One?
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Lemon is the answer to that question? Who's next? Cynthia? Cynthia,
go ahead.
Speaker 9 (36:10):
I actually feel a sense of relief, but cal has
gone instead of the dread. I was feeling like it
because I felt like next season was gonna be much
of the same. So my question is, do you feel
any sense of relief that he's gone since you didn't
have a relationship with him, and can you describe how
or if you'll attempt to build a close relationship with
the new incoming coach.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
That's a good question. Let me put it like this,
and I appreciate the call. I Uh, this isn't about me, okay,
this is about UK. As I've said over and over,
if Kentucky wins, not only am I happy personally, it's
good for everything we do. So I would rather have
a coach that doesn't want anything to do with me
(36:54):
and we win, than a coach that is my friend
and we lose. I'm gonna be honest with you about that.
With that said, I was dreading next year a lot
because I thought it was gonna be unbelievably toxic all year.
I was dreading what happened this year, which is every
time Kentucky won a game, people are like, eat it,
(37:15):
Matt Jones, throw it yeah, John cal Perry up your face,
and like, I didn't enjoy that. And then I also
didn't like when we lost. If I said anything, people
will go, You're so unfair to cal your distraction. So yeah,
it's stunk, and I was ready for that to be over.
I was now part of it will happen When Arkansas
wins games, people are gonna go run over Like I
(37:38):
didn't run anybody off. Cal ran himself off. With that said,
I think a fresh start was needed. I do think
it's important to realize we won't be as good next
year as we hope.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
Probably probably not, But I think we can be good.
Speaker 6 (37:54):
Oh. Absolutely. The transfer pearl gives us that edge.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
Can we lose to Oakland in the first round?
Speaker 3 (38:00):
That's see, that's my point for all this stuff of
who can we get to replace Cal. There's a lot
of people that can lose to Oakland. Everybody in this
bar can lose to Oakland. The question is who can win?
And there will be somebody out there. And I will
say this, whoever we hire, even if we don't like
(38:23):
the hire, we owe it to them to give them
a chance because once they're the coach, we need them
to succeed. Yes, whoever it is the worst, most self
destructive act is to hire a coach and then not
be happy before it even starts.
Speaker 6 (38:38):
Right, So when the new coach come in, will have
him on the show.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
No, we'll have him on. Yeah, we'll have him on.
And I there's no way the relationship could get worse.
So you know we'll have him on Who's Next? Mark Anthony,
Mark Anthony, go.
Speaker 11 (38:54):
Ahead, Hey man, Hey Ram Bailey, Matthew, I was getting
a cup cafed one of my wife holler, cow's going
to Arkansas. So after I cleaned up my miss. It
was a sudden shock, but not a surprise. And I
wonder if the little meeting between him and Mitch was
a beard that they both knew he was going. Mit said, look,
(39:15):
we'll say say the status quo and I'll give you
a week.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
Yeah, I don't think that's surely I don't think that. Well,
I mean, okay, but that's not what happened. And I
can't tell you why I know that, but just trust me,
that's not what happened.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Okay.
Speaker 11 (39:30):
Anyway, my overall feelings like Cynthia, All of a sudden
this morning, I feel like a weight's been lifted off
my shoulders for some reason. And uh, we got I
think a two week win to the hire coach, Matt,
what do you think about that?
Speaker 2 (39:43):
I think we got a week. I think we got
a week.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
I think the portal I appreciate the call starting this
week the portal will be flooded with people. Season's over,
It's gonna be flooded. We need to go get a
coach to get a ross.
Speaker 4 (39:59):
Right, Yeah, that's asking if you thought we'd have a
coach by Friday, and I think they need one by Friday.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
And if I were Mitch Barnhardt and I were the
UK Athletic Department, the first thing I would do today
is call Read Shepherd and say we hold off until
we pick a coach. Yep, that's what how much what
Sam Newton did with Tim pm Couches seem Eaton looked
at Tim Couch and said, before you run away, let
(40:24):
me hire a coaching meeting.
Speaker 6 (40:25):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (40:26):
That was a different time, right, it was a different time.
But I would say to Read Shepherd just just hang
on right.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Yeah, Now, I don't think that'll work.
Speaker 5 (40:35):
It seems like a pipe dream.
Speaker 3 (40:37):
I'd still do it. Hell, it doesn't hurt you to
make the call just because Reid's.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Got till the end of the month to decide an
So all right, we'll take a break.
Speaker 3 (40:47):
Come back our number two, eight five, nine, twenty two
eighty seven. We are here at ks Bar, Crazy Days,
Kentucky Sports Radio
