This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Now here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
All right, good morning ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls. Crappall's,
Grandma's aunts and uncle did is Wednesday, May twenty ninth.
This is the Wednesday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan
Levandrew Franklin, and Shannon the Dude here and as always,
this edition of Kentucky Sports Radio sponsored by the T. J.
Smith Law Office.
Speaker 5 (00:50):
What happened?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Shannon? Oh? There you go?
Speaker 4 (00:52):
My MIC's working. Hey called TJ. He'll make them pay.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Call TJ. He'll make them pay. We'll have our Kentucky
branded Call of Today. Which I think we forgot yesterday.
Sha may we'll do two today, okay, rough start, we'll
have the Whiskey Thief song of the day. And right
here in my right hand the brand new a vision
glass text machine, and I just messed it up. There
(01:15):
we go. Look at that, it's charged. Let's see that
text came in all day, all night. But we're going
to start fresh today and it's ready. It's ready to go.
And the number is five O two seven three five
three six eight zero.
Speaker 6 (01:31):
He remembered it. Shanny wasn't even looking at the back
of the phone right there. That was all from memory
I had.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
I think the Ryan just sat in his bed last
night just just repeating that in his head so he
could get it right today.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Oh, you make fun. That's exactly what happened. Because look
it's got a little rhythm, you know. Michael Michael Matt
has his seven seven four seven seven two eight two
five O N eight two eight four eight four eight two. No,
just go go ahead. So mine I figured was five
O two seven. I can just remember that. Then it's
(02:00):
thirty five thirty six eighty five O two seven thirty
five thirty six eighty.
Speaker 5 (02:05):
Look at you I'm so proud.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Thank you.
Speaker 6 (02:07):
Also, listeners, I want you all to know that yesterday
afternoon we got to text the show topics for today.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yes you did.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
We had homework. This guy over here, this is a
brand new man.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Well, today is the last day of school in Fayette County.
Speaker 5 (02:22):
Okay, hallelujah.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
I mean I used to celebrate this day like it
was Christmas because that meant I didn't have to get
up at six in the morning, drive the kids to
the school, drive back when Aljil Saskay's own license. So
now instead of saying hallelujah, he's gonna be home all
the time, I'm like, oh dang, we said we're still
in school, But today's the last day. Most schools have
already been out, like a lot of the county schools
have already been out. But today's the last day for
Fake County, which means Fayette County graduation is this weekend.
(02:47):
Okay with real Bird this weekend, Real Bird with UK
Baseball Regional this weekend, it's gonna be a madhouse around downtown.
We do still have by the way we're talking about this,
some l Bird parking pass is still available. Drew got
some room got some room.
Speaker 6 (03:03):
Best best spots you can get, in my opinion, I
did it last year for both days.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
It's all process.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, and just for those that want to come here
a Chaos Bar or our neighboring restaurants, we still we
will have some spots reserved for you. Would give you
like a little pass, you have like a two hour pass,
and you can go to any of our restaurants right here,
especially Chaos Bar and Girl. But if you you don't
think you're going to try to sneak that pass and
park for five hours, you'll we'll tell you.
Speaker 6 (03:30):
Yeah, you're in charge of the tow truck. We already
got that room. I didn't know that, but no, there
there will be plenty of room if you want to
have a drink or a meal before after UK Baseball.
He said, you can't linger all day. We need those spots.
But there'll be plenty of room for people that just
want to come to Chaos Bar or our neighboring facilities
to enos.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, and we highly here.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Go ahead, Shad Now, Drew, when you say that Ryan's
in charge of the tow truck, like I'm picturing Ryan
driving a tow truck around and just picking up people's cars,
like I'll do that.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
He'll actually be the driver, right.
Speaker 6 (04:01):
Well, we figured he has the most experienced with needing
a tow truck.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
Truth, And since we couldn't get an.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
Actual certified driver, Ryan has the most minutes logged in
the vicinity of the tow truck, so we thought if
anyone could pull it off, it'll be right.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
It's not like it would be an honor to have
your car towed by Ryan.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Well we're gonna do it. Don't think you can park
in our reserve spots and walk over to real Bird
or we're towing your car out of here so you can.
There are still some spots available, not many, but some
spots available for rail rail Bird will have reserve spots
for you to come into the restaurant because it's gonna
be a busy weekend here, you know, the UK Baseball weekend,
graduation weekend, and we may have a big announcement Drew
(04:37):
by at eleven o'clock.
Speaker 6 (04:38):
Okay, I like big announcements. Maybe all announcements big, small, medium.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
This is big.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
It's a big one at eleven.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
Now you can't over sew, under deliver.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Oh no, this is this is gonna be over delivered.
Speaker 6 (04:52):
Have an interesting predicament with parking. Our show ends at
eleven fifty five. Yes, as we all know, baseball is
at noon. I'm going what are.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
You gonna do?
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Think about walking?
Speaker 2 (05:03):
You can't get that.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
I mean it'll add thirty minutes trying to get Oh yeah,
I've considered maybe scheduling. Yes, it's like ready to go perfect,
but I'm gonna try to. I mean I'm gonna have
to miss a pitcher too, hopefully not a full inning.
But I got a little logistical issue there with our
show Friday.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
So you're after the show Friday, you're going to the game.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
Potentially sprinting, haven't decided yet, or one of those uh
those little hover things.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Those little scooters, get you a little scooter.
Speaker 6 (05:28):
Maybe I'll do that. Whatever gets me to uh section
one oh one, row fifteen the fastest. They're not bad
visiting section all I could get, but getting in there.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Uh, I'm gonna stay here because we're gonna have a
watch party. We'rend a UK Baseball watch party for those
of you that can't get tickets, or you want to
come here, or maybe you've got graduation, come here and
watch the game. Here Friday. We're gonna pack it like
we do a UK football game or a basketball game,
and watch UK baseball in game one against Western Michigan,
which first pitch is at noon. It's right.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
If we get some good weather, maybe we can do
a little show out in patio, have a little tail.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
You want to do that Friday, We'll see. It's not
a bad idea. We're in charge. Today is Wings Day here.
Uh so come on out and have lunch with us
and then get your daughter Wings. But I think we
have to start with today's Today's Jackson Robinson Day. It
is today. The Jackson Robinson Watch wraps up. He's gotten
(06:20):
till what midnight tonight, unless you're Hamadu Diallo who.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
Missed it a few years ago.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Uh the Pulley's name out of the NBA draft. As
of this moment, he is still in the NBA Draft.
He's got until midnight to night to pull it out
for the Jackson Robinson Watch. We'll be doing it all
day long. Drew your what's your projection?
Speaker 6 (06:41):
Well, based on his projection, he's kind of at the
end of the second round, maybe going undrafted, so I'm
kind of leaning towards him. Coming back to school. I
think that would be his best decision. The question is
if he announced he's coming back to school by midnight,
then what's next because he doesn't have to say which school,
he just has to tell and then I'm going back
(07:01):
to college basketball. So it may not be completely over
with Jackson Robinson. Whatever happens today, if he stays in
the draft, it will be for our purposes. But uh,
if he returns to school. I know a lot of
people assume Kentucky's in it, but Kansas is also in
the mix and the potential return to BYU with their
new coach. They're throwing around a lot of money out there.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
In Utah, money that Mark Pope didn't have when he's
kind of.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
Like, uh, I mean, they don't have any animosity towards Pope,
but kind of like the we're gonna we're gonna be
all right without this guy. We're gonna show it flex
r nil muscles. So a return to BYU is still possible,
but we will know by midnight what Robinson is doing regarding.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
The NBA and then go from there.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Okay, I have a couple questions, but please I hear
now Kansas has got in the mix for Jacksons mix
in the Robinson sweepstakes.
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Yeah, Kentucky, Kansas and BYU. If I were putting an order,
I would think of be Kentucky staying at BYU and
then Kansas running third. That's just me guessing. I mean,
if he comes back, they'll still have time to recruit him.
He might even visit allse places again, who knows, but
it won't. It's not like if he returns to school,
we just have a parade. He's coming to Lexington. There
will be a little bit more of a fight, I
think if he does return.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
So if he does withdrawal from the draft, there's really
no timeline for him to pick a college right now,
right then. And I mean he can wait another month
if you wanted to.
Speaker 5 (08:18):
I want to get it done soon.
Speaker 6 (08:20):
But it's not he won't have his back against the
wall and making a decision like he does today with
the NBA or college. Who'll have a little time to
weigh those three options. Hopefully no one else enters the mix.
That's plenty.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
So Shannon, if you had to look into your crystal ball,
what do you think is gonna happen? Uh?
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Well, I can tell you what would happen. If it
were me, I would be looking to see how can
I maximize the amount of money that I can make? Yeah,
and I think going to the G League would not
be a smart move, So I would probably come back
to college, make a ton of nil money with Kentucky,
all right, and then improve my draft stock in the meantime,
and then come back the next season.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
And be a first round pick and make the right answer.
That's the right answer for sure, no doubt. What what's
your prediction?
Speaker 5 (08:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (08:58):
Jack Pilgrim has been keeping up with it on our
and he mentions a lot about how the family worries
about going to yet another school because he's he'll be
his fourth and four years. I guess he was at
A and M in Arkansas then BYU. A lot of
balancing around there, so comfort could be something at BYU
to watch if he comes back. I still think if
you're him, stick him with Pope. You know what you
haveving a coach, You're you're not gonna find a better
(09:20):
place for your marketability than in Lexington. You know he'll
have to deal with age when he goes to the
NBA a year from now. But I think his best
shot at it proving that Stock would be in Lexington.
And that's me being a bit of a selfish k fan,
but also I really think that's the case if he
wants to, if he's really trying to move from into
the second round to first round a year from now.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Do you guys buy anything into the fact that Mark
Pope actually went to the Combine NBA Combine to visit
to watch, support to support Jackson Robinson.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
Robinson said in interviews they're staying in touch with Pope
about every day.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
They're still very close. So Pope's doing all he can.
Speaker 6 (09:57):
I'm sure other coaches are calling too, but he said,
you know, he's no one has freezing out to him
as often as Pope as with their relationship from the
last couple of years. So Pope's doing all he can.
We'll just see when it comes down what Robinson decides.
We had the big news, uh, you know the deadlines,
not just for Robinson's for everyone.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
We had four guys, now some of them I didn't
even know they were in the NBA draft, but four
current players came back yesterday.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
I was gonna ask you about that.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Yeah, Mari Williams went first.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Yeah, who was next? Mott Butler.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
And Andrew Carr and then I think it's breaking right
this morning that Kobe Brie is also.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Okay, answered my question, I didn't see yet where he had.
Speaker 6 (10:36):
I'm saying that I believe Jacob I didn't even you
didn't even know he was in the draft, to be honest,
Kobe Brad. See, that was the thing some of these
guys and they're announcing they're coming back, the reactions like, oh,
I didn't even realize you were in the pool, which
is fine. They were just figuring out getting their feedback.
We had players do it many years going back. But uh, yeah,
it's here and now he's the fourth to come back officially.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Yeah. So really it's it's just the Jackson Robinson watch
the rest of the day.
Speaker 6 (10:59):
Unless you know, we might have a couple other guys
in there we don't know about that are on the team,
but yet, no, this is all about Jackson Robbinson. Okay,
if you really if you're worried about Robinson not picking Kentucky,
there's the Woga poplar from Miami. He'll he'll be pulling
his name out of the draft and another guy you
could watch as a backup plan.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
What about that I kept hearing, was it Will Riley?
Speaker 6 (11:19):
Yeah, he's he's with uh, he's the the high school
reclass backup plan.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
He's also just a backup plan right now.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
I assume.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
So, I mean maybe you could get both if you.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
Don't get Robinson. Those are the two guys you're looking
for on the wing.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Well, there you go, there's your Jackson Robinson. Updated be
refreshing all day long. Stay stay on top of it
on KSR or on three.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
Sports during the board, the boards where all the action
is KOs board.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
I didn't answer the questions this morning, I wrote him,
you wrote the questions this morning. Well, I'll do it
to break.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
I subbed in for Talers today. We could have used you.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
I will do it again. He did it.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
It's over.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Maybe for tomorrow you to send you some questions for tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
I was, well, she's back, but we'll figure.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
And the next day you're supposed to do it. You
let me know and I'll send you some Mike.
Speaker 6 (12:03):
Quest All right, Today's gonna be a big day of
hitting refresh though that Yeah, that Hamadu Diallo year. I
have like vivid memories of basically sitting on my couch
all day, hitting refresh, refreshed and searching his name on
Twitter with every other Kentucky basketball fan on the internet.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
And then it happened after midnight.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I'm trying to think, you know, we went through this
with the Oscar, but he didn't wait till the thirteenth
thousand a.
Speaker 5 (12:25):
Day follow is the one that I mean.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
It was an unbelievable amount of traffic on our website Twitter,
just searching his name because we were just waiting, and
I think he forgot.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Well, he admitted he forgot.
Speaker 7 (12:36):
I forgot.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
This was watching Netflix, all right.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
Our phone lines will be open eight nine two eight
h two two eight seven. It's eight five nine two
it o kats Uh. Former UK baseball coach, the godfather
of UK baseball, Keith Madison, will join us here bod
get in a couple of minutes talk about the Batcats
big weekend coming up. We'll take your calls as well.
Ryan Drew and Shannon, this is Kentucky Sports Radio, all right,
welcome back. Can take a sports radio, oh, Ryan Drew
(13:00):
and Shannon. You know part of the UH our requirements
when Matt is gone, when we fill in, we have
to do the live reads. We have to do the spots,
the commercials. You know, he'd he handles all that when
he's here, but when he's not here, we kind of
have to split it up and share it. Drew had
an epic UK Federal Credit yesterday.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
Got tongue tied, tongue twisted, tongue tied at the end. Yeah, couldn't,
couldn't say the name of the bank, but I thought
it was.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Okay, Hey, today's your redemption day, though, Drew, so Shanny,
you know what they did.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
It's a new day.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
They don't trust Drew anymore. They send him a script today.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
Script's up also yesterday pulled to you. You turned to
me to read it, and I was not prepared to
pull up. So I had that Ryan Lemon anxiety going
into it.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
You want to, you want to, you want to try
your hand at the at the.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
Script once again.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
It's another part that I participate in with their lovely bank.
UK Federal Credit Union is helping you save more in
twenty twenty four, and for a limited time, you could
score one of the best rates with their nine month
certificate account at four point seven five percent ap y
lock in this great rate today and watch your savings grow.
The next nine months. Need flexibility and a great rate.
(14:07):
Check out the money market account that rewards members the
more they save. UKFCU is here for you and here
for life. Federally insured by n c U A ap
y annual percentage yield minimum one thousand dollars to open
certificate accounts. Member eligibility required. That was a great read, Rodman.
And once again I did this. I tailed advantage of
(14:29):
this non month just just the other day I got
one of these.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Nailed it through a couple bucks ago.
Speaker 7 (14:35):
Yeah, you will to see.
Speaker 6 (14:36):
It on that for you I told you about yesterday.
This is this is all legit good stuff there.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Now UK Federal Career Credit Union feels much better about
the sponsorship.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
Oh yeah, I'll be doing TV commercials super Bowl commercials
now yesterday.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
I think maybe during the show yesterday, or mean right
after the show. The details broke for Mark Pope's new
contract as a Kentucky head coach lex and held leader.
I think Ben Roberts broke the story or got first
guy's hands on it first. It's basically five years, twenty
seven and a half million dollars comes out to like
a little over five million a year or something like
(15:09):
that five point five a year. Obviously, Uh, they're getting
a little bit of a discount. The Calperry discount coming
in there. They're gonna save them tell us four million
dollars a year. Anything jump out with you about the
contract or anything.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
There was some incentives.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
If he makes the Sweet sixteen, it automatically extends by
year and includes a bonus for two hundred and fifty thousand,
and he gets an extra fifty thousand for winning the
SEC tournament.
Speaker 5 (15:36):
Remember we remember that.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
I remember when we used to get to the weekend
of the SEC tournament.
Speaker 6 (15:42):
I'll give him fifty thousand, fift thousand, but I would
like to win that again. One hundred thousand for winning
the SEC regular season miss doing that, two hundred and
fifty thousand for a final four, and five hundred thousand
for winning the national championships. Some good incentives there, Yeah,
But I said, good discount based on what we had
the last few years with the life time deal, and
even a good discount on what they were throwing at.
(16:02):
Maybe Hurley and Scott Drew who first two offers. This
is uh for a coach we seem to love right away.
I feel like they got a little bit of a good,
good budget option here.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
That's true, Janny. You know they were ready to load
up the Breeks truck and dump it at Danny Hurley. Yeah,
and then they saved saved some bucks by a hiring
Mark Pope.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
Pope's doing all right though it gets what a quarter
million dollar raise after every season.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
That's a good start.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
That's a very good start. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
And then the incentives, of course to win the SEC,
which it's not gonna take money for Mark Pope to
win the SEC.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
To want to win the SEC.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Tournament, I can assure you he realizes how much that
tournament means to the fans that come down to Nashville
and you know, spend an entire weekend down there, spend
a lot of money. So that's gonna be I guess
refreshing to see that we have a coach that actually
cares about winning the conference tournament.
Speaker 6 (16:46):
Ron, Well, I think when we get to the summer
and you've completely aced your assignments while Matt's gone these
ten weeks, Yes, I think you should take Pope's contract. iHeart, like, okay,
look at it, renegotiate.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
Maybe I want an extra hundred fift thousand every year moving.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
Forward, What would be our incentives two hours without the equipment. Well,
that's not on us, that's on them.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Yeah, a show where I don't mess up the Stockton
mortgage read true, or I'm prepared to read the Stockton
mortgage read I get a little diet coke.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
Remembering the equipment, that's a huge one.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Yeah, if I remember the equipment. So I did have
a really cool son father son moment last night.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Oh yeah, I saw a selfie from this Matt.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Uncle. Matt let us use his tickets to the Red's
Cardinals game last night. My whole family's Cardinal fans and
my dad there's no bigger Cardinal fan than my dad.
And so my dad and I drove up Cincinnati. He
got to sit in Matt's seats and Channing you know
you've been there and Dreaven and those are awesome seats.
I mean, they are incredible seats. My dad was like
a little kid in a candy store. He couldn't believe,
(17:51):
you know, those seats. And you know, you kind of
have your own private concession stand in your private bar
and your private bathroom in that little clubhouse in there.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
If you need to go, h relax, a little bit.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
He was so excited he we couldn't wait till we
got in the car and he called my mom telling
her about the game. So it's a I sent Mat
to thank you know, I really appreciate him to let
us use these tickets because my was you know. It's
everybody has those memories with their dad out playing catching
the ball yard, you know, and so now I get
the experience baseball with my dad. Another way, in the game, we.
Speaker 6 (18:22):
Got to do those father son trips. I saw your
Cardinals didn't take it easy.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
On the route. No, they did not. That's what made
it even better. The weather was perfect for baseball. I
mean it was perfect, and the Cardinals end up winning
seven to one. They'll stinking good for nothing. Neither team
is very good. No, don't get me wrong, Shannon, neither
team is very good.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
Neither one will be going to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
But I'm glad you had to, uh or got to,
you know, the opportunity to enjoy a day out with
your dad and watch the Reds lose another game.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
It's always fun.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
I just did the PGA with my dad, so I
know which Yeah, going exactly with big golf fans. So
we were right when Xander hit that shot on eighteen,
would prist see us? It was just a few feet
from us. Normally when Mac goes to Cincinnati, though, you know,
he's throwing peanuts at somebody, or two people are fighting,
or he's not knowing where to park.
Speaker 5 (19:07):
Did you just have it? It sounds like you just had
a great experience.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
We were in and out of them. Oh no, all
that is a good question.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Because there's Matt always has some chaos from Red's game.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Well, I completely forgot. Remember when he pushed the old
lady over on open Do you remember that? That was
opening day? Yeah, it was opening day. Trying to get
to the ballpark, we parked that and I parked in
the parking garage right by the stadium. So walking back
to the parking garage, we unknowingly got on the wrong
elevator and got off on the wrong floor. So we're
(19:38):
walking around in this huge parking garage trying to find
the car. I'm like, it's kind of be right here.
So he starts hitting the alert button. We hear it,
but we have no idea where it is. We realized
it's in the floor above us, so we had to
walk up the ramp to get up to the floor.
Book we got to We not only took the wrong elevator,
we took the wrong got off on the wrong floor.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
There we go.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
It's never an easy process. A five two two eight seven.
That's our phone number if you want to call and
get on board. Shannon, who you got first?
Speaker 4 (20:04):
All right, let's go to Glenn in Pennsylvania.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Glenn in Pennsylvania. Go ahead, Glenn.
Speaker 8 (20:09):
Hey, guys, how's going today? How are you Glenn doing?
Wonderful man, it's a wonderful day up here in eastern PA.
Sunshine and birds are singing.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Hey.
Speaker 8 (20:18):
Hypothetical situation here if we were not next season, but
any season in general. If we were to go have
a really good season, stay in the top five all
year long, and go to the SEC Tournament lose it,
(20:38):
go to the NC Double A tournament losing the second round,
or have a mediocre season SEC tournament win and losing
the second round of the NC Double A, which would
be the most successful season in your guys opinion. All right,
(20:59):
So now I'll hang up and Unlett.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Glan appreciate it. It's kind of a good question because
I would just like to win one game in March.
Just one game would be an improvement for me. And
if they win the SEC tournament but maybe bow out
after the first weekend in the NCAA tournament. I mean
my initial reaction is I think I would be okay
with that.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
Did you have a second round loss in both yes scenario.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Yeah, none, did not get to the second weekend.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
I don't like that attitude. I don't know. That's tough.
Speaker 6 (21:26):
So you know I missed the SEC tournament winning that
one lean that direction.
Speaker 5 (21:32):
Yeah, there is a little bit to the argument.
Speaker 6 (21:34):
Doesn't really matter, but that's Kentucky's tournament that it has
been too long, So whatever it takes to be there
on Sunday and win that again. I missed that feeling.
I missed that confetti falling on us in Nashville. Ryan
got some of it a zip blog back at home.
It's it's got dust, it's evaporating.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Shannon, what would you say, Yeah, if you're gonna have
a mediocre season and go out on the second round
on the NCAA tournament regardless, at least have a title.
So I would take the option of winning the SEC
championship in the tournament we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
I think in most fans' minds, they would be happy
win the SEC Tournament and at least get to the
Sweet sixteen. I think in most fans' minds, for first year,
we're at throwing the roster together like he has. I
think that would be viewed as a success.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
I mean, you want to just you want to be
better than you were the year before.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
They want to just win a game in March is.
Speaker 6 (22:19):
Much better, at least for the postseason. I don't want
to dismiss last year's regular season. That has a lot
of fun, but for postseason there's a no there's nowhere
to go but up.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Really, I think most fans would trade a maybe disappointing
regular season to have success in March, and a.
Speaker 6 (22:34):
Disappointing regular season could mean you're growing along the way,
you take some early losses, you watch him get better,
and then it ends with the culmination of winning the
SEC Tournament.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
All right, Well, take our break, we come back. The
godfather of UK baseball. He's in the house, Keith Madison
talk about the Batcats and their big weekend coming up.
We come back on con Tacky Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (22:55):
TJ Smith personal injury attorney call TJ.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
He'll make them pay more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented
by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
All right, welcome back taking Sports Radio, Ryan Drew and
Shannon here, and it's a huge weekend for UK baseball.
Drew hosting the regional tournament for the second year in
a row as the overall number two seed.
Speaker 6 (23:16):
Oh yeah, I can't wait to get over there. I'm
excited for our special guest. I hope he was able
to get tickets. I think he's get hold of those.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
He's talking about a lifetime pass. Joined now by the
You are the godfather of UK baseball, Keith Madison, head
coach for twenty five years, and I know you have
to be proud of a Peacock when you see what
this program, where this team is today, aren't you no doubt?
Speaker 9 (23:40):
I mean what Nick Menzion has done, and then and
also what Mitch Barnhardt has done getting a new stadium,
and then Nick has just done it. He's done a
tremendous job with this program. And you know they hit
a lull there right before the pandemic and during the pandemic,
but everything was weird then, but they have done a
(24:02):
masterful job with the Transfer portal. They've gotten some great
They really do their homework on these guys. And when
you get guys like Grant Smith from Incarnate Word to
transfer in and he's probably the best short stop in
college baseball, and then you know, it's just amazing that
(24:22):
they've been able to attrack these guys. And not only that, Ryan,
but once they get them here in the fall, they
have the fall practice and to get all these guys
thinking together and playing together and pulling for each other
and being a team, that's a whole different thing. I mean,
you see you see different sports with the transfer portal.
(24:43):
They bring these guys in, but it doesn't always work.
You know, they there's egos involved and there's hey, I
want to play shortstop, No, you're playing second base. You know,
there's all those kinds of dynamics going on. But Nick
and his staff have done a tremendous job of getting
these guys that come together. And you watch him in
the dugout. They have so much fun. There's so much energy,
(25:04):
and they really pull for each other and they've been
a fun team to watch this year.
Speaker 6 (25:09):
Is there a trick to that that blend, because he
does have a blend of guys that made huge plays
last year in the postseason, guys that started freshman and grown.
Then you have Nick Lopez who comes in his first
team all SEC. So he's got a hodgepodge of backgrounds there,
but they seem so close. As you said, is there
is there a secret you can reveal or in magic formula?
How he pulls that together?
Speaker 9 (25:30):
You know, I think Nick, and you guys know this
about Nick. He is such a positive guy, you know.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
He he.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
You can't you can't be around Nick. Me and Jonah
be unhappy.
Speaker 7 (25:42):
You know.
Speaker 9 (25:42):
He just has that energy himself. And I think it's
like John Maxwell the Great Leadership Group says, you know,
everything rises and falls with leadership, and so when they
see their head coach with this much energy and then
he's encouraging guys to to have fun in the dugout,
you know, that's that's an area where me and everybody
else they coached in my era, we messed that up.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Well, old school, you didn't allow it. No, no, you
didn't do that. That's that was you know.
Speaker 9 (26:08):
It's like, boy, you gotta you better be locked in.
And if I ask you what the count is, you
better know it.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Uh huh and instead these.
Speaker 7 (26:14):
Guys are over there having fun.
Speaker 9 (26:15):
They're in the game and they're ready to play, but
they're still having a blast of the dugout.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
So we get asked all the time, what has been
the difference this year? Why is this year they've been
so successful this year?
Speaker 9 (26:27):
I think it's because they they win in so many
different ways. Like if if you know, if they're not
hitting the ball in the gap or hitting the home runs,
they can execute small ball. If they're not executing small ball,
they're letting Ryan Ryan walts Schmidt and uh my favorite player.
Oh he's that guy's a stud. Yeah, he is a stud,
but they're letting him and you know these other guys
(26:48):
swing it. Yeah, And so they can hit home runs,
they can do double steals, which I know you probably
were really good at at Kentucky west.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
No, I don't know why you didn't recruit me back at.
Speaker 7 (27:00):
I know that's a huge miss.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Still, he lays awaken night, Drew, I knew miss I
missed out on that one.
Speaker 7 (27:06):
I could have had this guy.
Speaker 9 (27:07):
He could have broken a school record for stealing bases
at Kentucky instead of Kentucky Westland.
Speaker 5 (27:12):
If there was a portal he would have gone and
gotten yefter one year.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
I do have a funny story. We came over and
played you guys in fallball in nineteen eighty six. You
guys were loaded. I mean that was Terry Shumpert and
I think maybe Larry Lubers and Mark Thompson and I
had You had a great pitching staff. William van Landingham
may been on there. And you guys beat us the
first game nineteen to one. Yeah, second game, we threw
our best picture. You played all your second string guys
(27:36):
and we won. And you made him run. We broke down,
got in the van, and you're still making them run
out in the outfield.
Speaker 7 (27:44):
Well that's that's old school. But yeah, you know.
Speaker 9 (27:47):
One of the things about back in that era, we
would play teams like Kentucky State in Georgetown because I
wanted my young players to have an opportunity to play. Yes, absolutely,
and it was good competition. You know, you guys are
pretty good. Yeah, and I'm amazed we scored nineteen runs off.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Oh, you killed us the first game, but then we
threw our ace. We treated the second game as the
best game. And you did you threw you played your
second string guys.
Speaker 7 (28:11):
Well, you know.
Speaker 9 (28:12):
That's the thing about baseball, like it's different than football
or basketball. It's all about pitching. Yeah, oh yeah, And
I don't care who you're playing. If they're throwing their
number one and you're throwing your number five or six,
they got a great chance of beating you no matter
who you are.
Speaker 5 (28:25):
Yeah, how could that help?
Speaker 6 (28:27):
Like talking about going against a great pitcher? They played
well against Hagen Smith a day after one hit against LSU.
What can something like that, where you go up against
an elite pitcher that's top ten projected pick? How can
that help their confidence moving forward into this week?
Speaker 9 (28:40):
That's a great question because you have guys like Walt
Schmidt and Grant Smith and and me and Petrie. These
guys face Paul Skeens last year, he's in a big
league existing yeah crazy, And I still remember Petrie going up.
I think he was leading off and Skiings is throwing
like a hundred miles an hour and Petrie just hits
(29:03):
a bullet, pulls it to right field.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
And I'm going, my goodness, this kid's.
Speaker 9 (29:07):
Got some bad speed, so Drew. When you face guys
like that, and then you know Smith this year and
we were able to punch out a few hits against them,
and then you bring in a guy that's throwing ninety three.
You're going, hey, there's no doubt I can hit this guy.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Now. We talked about this yesterday with Daniel Hager. Do
you throw your ace Friday? I mean, how do you
as a coach, because you know the SEC Tournament they
saved their ace till game two.
Speaker 9 (29:34):
How do you handle your pitching roation this weekend? Boy,
that is a great question. I mean you have two
schools of thought there as you know, you know you're
playing Western Michigan.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
First, yeah, you should handle them.
Speaker 9 (29:45):
Yeah, but I've always said, for thirty years, I've said
that the MAC is the most underrated baseball conference in America.
Those guys can play. So if you throw a down
the line guy against them, you get beat. Now you're boys,
you know you're in trouble now the losers bracket. So actually,
I I was with all the coaches this morning and
uh we we uh we meet every Wednesday morning.
Speaker 7 (30:08):
They let me come in.
Speaker 9 (30:09):
I'm I'm I'm sort of like Joe Hall was to
John Caliperry. They let me hang out the old coach
around in practice.
Speaker 7 (30:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (30:18):
So so sure enough, I mean Nick asked me, Hey,
what's your pitching rotation this weekend?
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Yeah, and I gave it. He ask you, he asked me.
Speaker 9 (30:26):
But yeah, that doesn't mean they're going to go with it.
But so uh Nick said, hey, that's enough the one
I picked. I think you're You're right with uh, you're
right with Dan. You know Dan's a pitching coach. So
uh yeah, I mean, I'm I'm probably I'm probably gonna
go pooser against Western Michigan, and I want I want
to win that first game. He got to, Yeah, and uh,
I remember one time, Uh we were playing South Alabama
(30:50):
to open up our season, and that was back when
Paul Kilget pitched and you know Paul pitched in the
big leagues for ten years or something, and uh we
played I can't the name of the school we paid.
It played a team that wasn't very good the first
game while we were on that trip, and I went
with my number four pitcher and we lost this little school.
(31:11):
Then we played South Alabama. They were ranked in a
top ten that year, and I threw kill Gus and
we lost that game too. So we started off the
season oh and two. Because I didn't pitch kill Gus
in the first game. So ever since then, I've been like,
you got to go with your best in a tournament situation.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
You were laughing about hanging around. But I was there
last year.
Speaker 6 (31:32):
I think it was the after they won the regional
when Nick min jill And brought you on the up
to the podium at the press conference and talked about
how much bigger help you are, how he leans on
you for supporting advice. Just how much did that mean
for you in his special moment there to share it
with you in front of all the cameras.
Speaker 9 (31:48):
You know, that was one of the most humbling things
that's ever happened in my life. To be honest with you,
I didn't know what to say. And you know, we
were all out there celebrating and and Nick comes up
to me and he coach's I want you to go
to the press conference with them. I said, oh, man,
this is your moment.
Speaker 7 (32:03):
You go And he.
Speaker 9 (32:04):
Said no, no, no, I really want you to go.
And so then he walked off.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
And then.
Speaker 9 (32:10):
Mitch Barnhart comes up to me and he said, Nick
really wants you to go back there, and I said, okay, okay, So.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
I went back there.
Speaker 9 (32:16):
The boss says, go, and I remember kind of sitting
over in the corner and thinking, why does he want
me in here? And then he calls me up there
and I'm going, oh, man, I was not prepared for this.
I was I was more nervous than coming on KSR.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
That was a very cool moment. Being it cool, you
can tell you where caught off guard.
Speaker 6 (32:33):
But for him to be in that moment, just winning
the region for the first time for him and that's
his press conference to share it with you, I thought
that was very much.
Speaker 9 (32:39):
Yeah, we have a really special friendship. And you know,
he he does things so differently than I did things,
And it just goes to show you that even though
you might have different philosophies, you can still be really
good friends. I wish our entire nation could grab a hole. Amen,
you know, and just hey, you don't have to agree.
I'm probably not going to agree with everything Drew says,
(33:01):
but you know what, we can be good friends.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
Yes, And Drew's a good guy.
Speaker 7 (33:04):
Yeah, he's a good guy. I like you, Drew.
Speaker 9 (33:06):
You know he he's probably going to vote differently than
me this year, but I don't care.
Speaker 7 (33:10):
You know, that's his privilege. It's a free country.
Speaker 6 (33:13):
That's right, Amen, talking about being so close min Jian,
did he Uh do you get a share of that
SEC Coach of the Year too? Does that get stay
on your mantle every once in a while. Since he
says you're such a big help, I feel like you
should get.
Speaker 5 (33:23):
A look credit.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
He told me I could come look at it. Okay,
that's it.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Uh, we'll take our break. We'll come back. If you
want to talk to coach Madison. You got a question
for him about UK baseball or anything. But Shannon, we
come back. You're gonna find out how coach Madison knows.
Randy Machelman said.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
I cannot wait to hear this story.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
This is just for you, Shannon the Dude. So we'll
take our break. Come back eight five nine two eight
oho two too, eight seven, Ryan Drew and Shannon with
Coach Keith Madison here on Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back
Kentake You Sports Radio. Ryan Levan, Drew Franklin, Shannon the Dude.
We're joined by the godfather of UK Baseball, Keith Madison.
We got a special caller online for you. Want to
(34:01):
get to him a second, Okay, but you have to
tell Shannon the dude, how you know Randy Macho man
savage and like you got you know him? Well, yeah, we.
Speaker 9 (34:11):
Doug Flynn and I came up through the Reds organization
together and when we were playing in Tampa in the
Florida State League, we had this catcher by the name
of Randy Poffo and he was an athletic looking guy,
left handed hitter, pretty good player. And so I remember,
(34:32):
I remember Doug Flynn, he and I were talking about
this the other day. He and a guy named Greg
Sinatra who was on the team. Greg Sinatra was a stud,
and so Randy would get on the bus, like we'd
be going down to Miami or someplace, and he get
on the bus and Greg and Doug Flynn would be
all over him because his dad was a pro wrestler,
(34:52):
you know, Randy's dad was Angelo Poffo, and so you know,
they would just hey, you know, don't you know your
dad's in the ring and it's fake and all this stuff.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
And Randy just took it. He didn't get mad or anything.
He just took it.
Speaker 9 (35:09):
And so about five years later, six years later, maybe
Doug is playing for the Mets and I'm finally coaching
here Kentucky and he comes. Doug comes to pick Sharon
and I to go out to eat with he and Oga.
And so he said, hey, you mind if I pick
up a friend and I said, no, that'd be great.
So we pulled into this little brick ranch house somewhere
(35:31):
in Lexington, and Doug and Oga get out and Sharon
and I are in the back seat, and all of
a sudden, this big dude comes out of the house
and he's got this wild and crazy hair and he's
just humongous.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
And I asked, seron, I said, who in the world
is this guy?
Speaker 9 (35:47):
And so he comes over and the windows were down,
and he looks in the back in the back seat
and he says, Madison Poffo here, and he had gained
like forty pound, all muscle, all muscle, and he just
looked different and even talked different. It's like and so
I just I had to think it through for a minute.
(36:09):
This was this the same guy?
Speaker 3 (36:11):
So I stayed in character even when you were just
hanging out or was he No.
Speaker 9 (36:16):
Not when when we were hanging out, but when he
when he reintroduced himself, he just wanted me.
Speaker 7 (36:21):
To know who he was.
Speaker 9 (36:21):
And so it was. It was hilarious. So he gets
in the car. This is a funny thing. We go
down to Columbia Steakhouse and everybody in the restaurant was
wanting Randy's autograph, and nobody wanted dugs autographic. Doug was.
He just wanted to go glove for the Mets, and
nobody recognized him. Everybody knew Savage was. But no, Randy
(36:43):
was a good athlete.
Speaker 2 (36:44):
Man.
Speaker 9 (36:44):
He was a good player, and he he was a
catcher and he hurt his arm, so no, before he
went into wrestling. He signed with the Cardinals organization as
a left handed throwing first basement true story. He learned
how to throw left handed in the off season after
you got released by the Red Wow. And he he
(37:05):
told me he threw two hundred balls every day left handed.
And and uh he he made a minor league team
doing that. He was he was just an amazing athlete.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Uh and just like amazing athletes.
Speaker 9 (37:19):
Yeah, he was a really fun guy to be around.
It broke my heart when I heard if he passed
when he used that elbow for other reasons, well.
Speaker 4 (37:26):
The elbow drop off the top rope.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Yeah, all right, we've got a special caller for on
the line. He called specifically to talk to you. So
who we got Shannon Kentucky, Joe Kentucky, Joe coach Keith Madison.
Speaker 5 (37:39):
A coach Madison.
Speaker 10 (37:40):
It's it's it's a real honor to talk to you.
I might have talked to you once and maybe summertime,
you know. But I guess the big question, even Kentucky
can win on AM and probably probably be Tennessee for
all the marbles.
Speaker 7 (37:57):
I sure hope.
Speaker 9 (37:57):
So, I mean in baseball, it all, it all starts
on the mound, you know, if our if our guys
are competing well on the mound and making, you know,
executing pitches and the way we play defense. We have
a tremendous defensive club, probably the best double play combination
in college baseball with Grant Smith and the Median Petrie.
(38:19):
So yeah, I think we can. You know, we Tennessee
is really good. Now I'm going to say that they
they've got it, they've got it all. They've got the hitting,
the pitching, But our defense is better than them, and
I think I think our offensive execution is better than Tennessee.
So we definitely have a chance to to go all
the way and it would it be cool for Tennessee
(38:39):
and Kentucky to play against each other in the College
World Series.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
I think we would take that. I do too, I
think we would take that. Got anything else, Kentucky Joe.
Speaker 10 (38:48):
No, there's I shouldn't tell there's some there's something going
on with coach Mark pulpe through. Somebody's wanting to check
it out.
Speaker 7 (38:57):
I'm sorry, Coach Madison. That's okay.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
Man.
Speaker 9 (39:00):
Hey, I'm a I'm a Kentucky Joe fan. I listen
to you guys all the time.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
There you go.
Speaker 8 (39:04):
You like all my songs.
Speaker 7 (39:07):
I love your song.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
Don't encourage it.
Speaker 9 (39:10):
Encourage if anybody, if anybody listens that says that Kentucky
Joe doesn't bring a smile to their face, that they
don't have a pulse.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
That's a good point.
Speaker 10 (39:19):
Good point, and probably the final thing. I planned to
do a championship song when when the Cats win.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
Okay, we'll take that. Yeah, cats win you Okay, thank you,
Kentucky Joe. Appreciate it. You'll take that if they win it,
We'll take a Kentucky Joe song. Absolutely about get.
Speaker 6 (39:38):
Them over there for the seventh inning stretch. Don't encourage you.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Said, you one more. We'll try to squeeze before we
get out here. Who we got Lee, go ahead? Lee?
Speaker 11 (39:48):
Uh, Guys, Coach Madison is one of the finest guys
you'll ever meet.
Speaker 7 (39:54):
That's what.
Speaker 11 (39:55):
And Nick's doing the same thing. But coach Madison sometimes
you tell you stories about him and John but I
had to do to get our baseball program going. And
coaches is Lee Rodgers and you have a great day.
Speaker 7 (40:07):
Hey, thank you, buddy, I appreciate it. Lee. Uh. When
he when he mentioned coach Butler, I got a quick story.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (40:14):
So back when Rick Patino first came here to coach basketball,
you remember how Rick dressed and everything.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Man, he oh wow.
Speaker 7 (40:22):
He always he looked like Frank Snatra all the time.
Speaker 9 (40:25):
So we uh, we got a we got a call
one day in May, and it was from Lewis Staff,
the former oh yeah commissioner.
Speaker 7 (40:33):
Uh State High School commissioner.
Speaker 9 (40:35):
So he said, hey, Keith, we you know your your
field is the only field we can get a game in.
It's been raining and and your field drains better than
any field in the city. And we got to get
this regional tournament game in. Would you let us play
at your field? And I said, well, Louis, if we
can get it ready, you know, we'll play. So Coach
Butler and I went out there and we we we
did everything we knew how to do to get.
Speaker 7 (40:56):
The water off the field.
Speaker 9 (40:57):
I mean we were squeezing in and off and and
all that, and and finally we even got to the
point where we at third base we drug dug a
little trench in the grass to drain the water off
the field.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
Yeah, I've seen that. And and and we we.
Speaker 9 (41:12):
Had a little hole there and we were actually using
cups to get water out and put it in a
bucket in the hauling off. And so we're muddy and
we're dirty. And Coach Butler looks up at me and says, Keith,
do you think Rick Patino would do this for a
high school basketball game?
Speaker 2 (41:27):
No? I don't think he would. No, I don't think
it would either. Listen, thank you very much for coming.
It's a lot of thank you.
Speaker 9 (41:33):
Appreciate fans come out this spring or this weekend and
support the Cats.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
Uh are you in the booth? Would do with Darren Headrick? Yeah,
I'm in the booth with Darren Heddrick.
Speaker 9 (41:41):
The fans energize these guys, Yeah, you know, the fans
get these players going, so I'm hoping the fans will
be just I hope it's rocking and rolling out there
this week.
Speaker 6 (41:50):
I think it will be such the big Keith Madison
bubblehead while you're.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
There for good life, the life size Keith Madison.
Speaker 7 (41:56):
Bubblehead, the empty head. That's what I'm all about.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
