Speaker 2 (00:30):
This.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Now here's Matt Jones.

Speaker 5 (00:37):
Happy Wednesday from my basement in Atlanta with Ryan, Drew,
and Mario in Lexington and Shannon and Louisville. I'm Tom
Hart sitting in having some fun here on KSR. We
got plenty to talk about today. I mean, We've got
a million things going on. It's Drew's birthday, yay, ol Mahall,

(00:57):
Patrick Patterson's house, got rob chestnuts been banned. We got
a million things. But the zoom pops up and Ryan
and I start making like gestures to each other and
we're laughing and Mario. By the way, Ryan was staring
at us like these dudes are eighties number one, which
I don't blame him, but my first, my first reaction

(01:19):
when I see you, Ryan, did you get a haircut?

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (01:22):
Yeah, don't I look I look a lot more handsome, dapper,
more educated, maybe even a little taller Drew.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
I did not think he could be more handsome, but
he got it tightened up a little bit.

Speaker 7 (01:33):
This is a whole lot of handsome sitting next to me.
Is it's an honor to every morning in the summer.
This is this is kind of the first person I
see and interact with every day, and it sets the
tone for the day. But today that he's really.

Speaker 6 (01:43):
Glowing makes the ladies, makes the ladies very Thursday, very thirsty.

Speaker 5 (01:50):
Here we go tomorrow's Thursday. What's it going right for
Ryan Lemon haircut these days?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Well, when we talked about this, I think with you.

Speaker 6 (01:56):
The other day, I go, I've gone to the same
gal who cut my hair for like twenty five years,
Michelle Collins, and I can still get a haircut. She'll
he charged me thirteen dollars, but I give her a
I give her a seven dollar tip I give her twenty.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I mean that's still that's pretty cheap. But that's all costs.

Speaker 5 (02:10):
Yeah, we did talk about it when we showed the
we showed the bushes. We're not gonna I've got another
picture for the second hour. It's not gonna be phallic.
I promise you. It's gonna probably a good thing. All right, Drew,
it is your big day, man, What are you excited about.

Speaker 7 (02:28):
I'm excited to talk to Tom Hart, as I just said,
I'm always excited to see Ryan Lemon. I don't have
any big plans for the day. Gonna go to a
little dinner with my family tonight. Next week we're vacationing,
so I'm kind of not going too hard today looking
forward to that. But you know, this is day one
of my fortieth year. I'm thirty nine today, so wow,
it's kind of one of those scary birthdays. I don't

(02:50):
like that number that's that's coming up next to June.
But here we are. I appreciate the birthday shout out.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Tom.

Speaker 6 (02:55):
Do you realize that when you first started at cass
Are you were oh yeah, look at that, and now
you're thirty nine.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (03:04):
I met Matt on my birthday. I was at two Keys.
Matt remembers it. I don't remember all of it, but yeah,
times have changed just a little bit.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Well, happy birthday, Thank you very much.

Speaker 7 (03:13):
Guys.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
That's big. I mean, that's big. You get to a
certain age, and I'll explain this to you, guys. Ryan's
the oldest I think. But what I've learned is like
I've gotten to a point where I feel older, like
almost on a weekly basis, Like something else pops up
and I'm like, man, but there's no sense of feeling
sorry for yourself because it's only going to get worse, right,

(03:35):
so just ignore it. Like unless you get on HGH
or some sort of you know, revitalizing drug, you're only
gonna get older if you're lucky. I've got to go
to a funeral tomorrow, Like you're lucky to get older now.
My uncle was ninety, so that's a whole different story.
But at this point, what do you ask for for
your thirty ninth birthday?

Speaker 7 (03:55):
I mean, people have been asking me for weeks and
I have no answer. I don't know. I don't need things.
Hoping to get around to golfing with my dad at
some point, that would be fun. Like I said, going
to dinner. You know, you get older, you don't need
the toys and the big events. I'm just looking to
hang out a little bit. I will say one thing
with getting older, there's something about sports. It's not even
this birthday, but little things like like younger fans of

(04:18):
Kentucky on our message board last week, it was Jamal
mcglure's birthday, and I said, happy birthday, Jamal McLure, champion
nineteen ninety eight. You love Jamal mcglure.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Matt loves Jamal macaure.

Speaker 7 (04:28):
So I wrote, everyone, leave your favorite Jamal McLure memory today,
And over half the responses where we don't remember Jamal mcglure.
And then there's like one person that's like, I barely
remember John Wall And it's those things that hurt me
much more than today's date or my age. It's kind
of sports, I think puts it into perspective a lot
when you're meeting younger people, when they don't even remember
these fond memories you think were just a few years ago.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
Now, the lifespan of players, even great players, is like
a blip on the radar. Shannon, do you agree with
Drew that you reach a certain age, you really don't
ask for stuff or need stuf because I have a
feeling you'd have a contrary opinion on this.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Well, I mean I always like, you know, presents anytime,
and you want to give me a gift, I'm fine
with that. My problem is I'm born on December twenty first,
so I always get the hey, buddy, here's your gift. Oh,
by the way, that's also your Christmas gift type thing.
So I always got kind of screwed when it came
over when it came to getting like a birthday gift.
But you know, as I get older, I like just experiences,

(05:25):
I think more than gifts, just you.

Speaker 5 (05:27):
Know, just just very nick mnion.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Yeah, just experiences, just hanging out with friends, you know.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
And you get to a certain age too, you don't
even want to talk about celebrating another birthday right once
you hit forty, don't remind me that I've got another
birthday coming up.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
Yeah, I'm with you. What I do most of the time,
whether it's like Christmas, maybe Father's Day, birthday is I'll
be like, hey, I bought a new pair of shoes,
Like whether you want to wrap it or not, like that,
don't buy me anything like I went and bought something
for me. So we're good. Is that a fair way

(06:01):
to do it? Ryan, like, at a certain age?

Speaker 6 (06:03):
Yeah, I think we're gonna be honest. I think when
we get a little older in my age, what's your birthday?
You want somebody cook you a meal, You want a nap,
and you want a little private quiet sneak around, you
know while bow chick time maybe that night.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
That's all. That's all I want. That's all, that's all
man wants. That's it. You give me that, and I'm
a happy I'm a happy man.

Speaker 5 (06:26):
Quiet sneak around, brown chicken bombo.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (06:29):
Remember Tom earlier when you said he's the oldest guy
on the show.

Speaker 5 (06:32):
You said that just fure.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
But that's what we want, you know, we're happy though.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
I'm gonna hold you guys to task here. You know.
It would be a great birthday, Father's day, president a
trip to Omaha. I cannot believe. I cannot believe the
KSR is not going to the College World Series. I
think the first time I met Matt was in Omaha
at the College World Series. Like I don't know how
many years ago. The first time we kind of hung
out and he knows how great in the event it is.

(07:00):
It is incredible. I've been to the Super Bowl, I've
been to the Masters, I've been to the Rose Bowl,
I've been to Final Fours, I've been to World Series.
The College World Series is the absolute best. And I'll
tell you why. It is the most accessible national championship
that you can hope for. I mean, like, I'm sure

(07:21):
you could go to the cross country National Championship and
probably get a steal on a ticket, right, But in
terms of having an event that you want to be at,
you get a day game. You go drink in the
morning and hang out and tailgate if you want, go
get a stake at night, you get a night game.
Maybe you go play golf with your buddies, or you
go across the river to the casino. Whatever it is.

(07:41):
But it is affordable. It is I'll put an asterisk
in front this one. It's somewhat convenient. I mean, Omahal
is in the middle of the country, so yeah, it's
like a ten twelve hour drive from many of the
listeners today. You can do it as cheap as you want,
you can do it as highbrow as you want, spend
as much money you can get a Motel six and

(08:01):
Council Bluffs, Iowa and then drive over. I'm sure somebody
is going to be having a huge tailgate. But I
stirred the hornet's nest yesterday from a quote I got
from a National Baseball rider like three days before when
on our little group texts that we had with a
bunch of baseball college baseball guys, I said, guys, I
think Big Blue Nation is going to take over Omaha.

(08:22):
And he immediately fired back and he's like, no way,
they're not baseball fans. They're not gonna show up. Brian,
tell me why he's wrong.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
He obviously doesn't know what Big Blue Nation is all about.

Speaker 5 (08:36):
Man.

Speaker 6 (08:36):
When we're a bowl game, we're going to that. If
it's an NCAA tournament basketball game, we're going to that.
There will be a huge, big Blue wave rowing to
Omaha for the College Baseball World Series. And if he
thinks this community is not baseball fans, he just didn't
know us. He didn't know Lexington, he didn't know UK Baseball.
There will be as big a crowd of Kentucky fans

(08:57):
as any other fan base there in Omaha.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
I guarantee it.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
I gotta. I gotta make a bet with him, just
so I can I can take advantage of this. Drew.
I know you've got vacation coming up, and you got
a birthday. Have you given consider it? Have you shared
where you're going on vacation? First of all, I don't
want to give too much of your personal for me.

Speaker 7 (09:14):
I haven't given the precise location, but I am going
to South Florida.

Speaker 5 (09:18):
You're going to South Florida.

Speaker 7 (09:19):
Do a little beach, Tom.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
Have you flipping? You know South Beach for Omaha? Like
they're basically one in the same well. The Missouri River
goes right by, there's sand, there's water or sun.

Speaker 7 (09:33):
I have thought about it. In fact, I and a
friend of mine who is in another part of the country,
and a friend of mine in another part of the country,
who all can't go this first weekend, We've all said,
if Kentucky is in that championship, we're all meeting there.
So I'm not a no on Omaha. I just need
Kentucky to win a few games before I can get there.
Because I'm in an airport coming back from Miami the

(09:58):
Saturday of the Championship Series. It's nothing to go up
to that gate and what calling Omaha if you will
and say that Lexington Kentucky flight, I would rather that
one go to Nebraska and I'm there easily, might be
wearing some swim trunks and a tank top, might need
someone to bring me a pea cat and ukgear. But
if they are in that final game, I might be
walking into Rocos and trying to help with that shot chart.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
If we're stealing it, Uh yeah, I will say. And
I brought this up on the other the other day.
LSU destroyed the jello shot challenge at Roco's last year. Yeah,
because they had a couple millionaire donors. This guy who
runs at a Chicken Shot was just buying thousands and
thousands of dollars of jello shots and passing them around

(10:39):
the entire bar. I'm not saying it's rig but you're
not just gonna do it by like everybody going up
and ordering shots for their table. Like it's gotta be
a coordinated nil type deal where somebody is sponsoring the
whole thing. That's what it would be. The secret.

Speaker 7 (10:55):
I've made up a scenario in my head where me
and my buddies we land on that Saturday night we
assume Joe Kraft is there. We find Joe and we say, Joe,
we need you. We're gonna run a quick errand you
won't be there long. It just need you to stop
by and make a quick contribution to this cause we have.
I've created that scenario in my head, and I hope
we get to that point.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
That's a no that's a no brainer. It could be
Kelly like, hey, bring your credit Kelly, Yes, anyway, just
pop in. It's just gonna take a second. Let him
run the card, give them a number and Jello shots
for everybody.

Speaker 7 (11:25):
Or I'll take the card. You don't have to leave
the hotel. Give me the card. I'll get this done
and bring it back to you hopefully at some point.
But I would love for that situation to pop up.

Speaker 5 (11:35):
I can see that happening. It is such a cool experience,
like it's I don't want to say it's not stressful,
because if your team's there, you want your team to win,
and so like every pitch can be sitting on pins
and needles, I'm sure, but it's so relaxed. And there's
there's a little league tournament that's going on with thousands
of kids, you know, just down the road and they
all come to the games and sit in the bleachers

(11:57):
and dudes who are carrying around cups of beer, and
there's a right across from right field and another bar
behind him plate, and another one at the third base line,
and you go, if you don't like beer, that's fine,
go get his Esto's and have a have a you know,
a swirly ice cream cone or whatever it might be.
It's just it is an incredible experience. And I imagine

(12:17):
I was there when Michigan was there. I've been there
when Lshu roots there. I've been there when Florida State
was there. I've seen like big schools have an impact
on Omaha. And to see the community and the camaraderie
between the fans, whether you know him or not, just
walking down the street and everybody dressed in blue. Man,
it's gonna be It's gonna be really cool. I'm so

(12:38):
happy for the for the Cats and for that team.
I don't know what I'm doing. By the way, when
I host this show, I know it better. We got
to guess at the bottom of the hour, do we
have a break before we have a like we need
to go to break Shannon.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
We can.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Yeah, if you want to show you what I want.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
I mean, I'm gonna drive it straight off the cliff.
I have driving Miss Daisy. I don't know what I'm
doing here. I'm just motoring along. Ran. I can't believe
you're not going well.

Speaker 6 (13:08):
Like Drew, the things have opened up where if they
can get past the first two games, I think there's
a chance we can all get ready to go over there.
I might even be able to go Monday. I can't
go Saturday the first game, but Monday is a strong
possibility I can go.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
So you driving, You're driving all the way there and
then coming right back.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Yeah, driving going to the game one.

Speaker 4 (13:27):
Night there and then ten hours right back.

Speaker 7 (13:29):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (13:30):
How many times we've been to Omaha?

Speaker 4 (13:31):
See?

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Yeah, Yeah, it gotta do it.

Speaker 7 (13:34):
I drove straight to Newark when we played Ohio State.
I got off my couch, drove to New Jersey because
someone gave me a ticket at the last minute, and
then I drove back. Sometimes you gotta drive long distances
on short notice to support the Cats'.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
I cannot wait. All right, we're gonna cover a little
bit about the games. I just had n C State.
I had their super Regional gets Athens. I'll give you
a scattering report on those guys. Chris Burke is gonna
be on h forgive him. He played at Tennessee, but
he covers college baseball like nobody else. He's gonna give
us a rundown of the College World Series field. What
he thinks about can tell you. I have plenty more
to talk about. And it's Drew's birthday. Can we use

(14:09):
the text line?

Speaker 6 (14:10):
Oh, it's the a vision glass text machine and the
numbers five O two seven three five three six eight zero.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
I've got it right here. But here's what I want.

Speaker 5 (14:20):
Here's what I want in the text line, I want
your worst birthday gift you've ever gotten.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Okay, we'll be back.

Speaker 5 (14:26):
Kentucky Sports Rito continues right after this. It's Drew's birthday
today and we're celebrating all day long, and it's really
going to be like a two week celebration because he's
going to get to Omaha for the National Championship in
like I don't know, ten days, a week and a
half something like that, and just parties. His brain's out. Hey, Ryan,

(14:47):
do you know what the streisand effect is?

Speaker 2 (14:50):
I've heard of this I've heard.

Speaker 6 (14:52):
I can't think of what it is right now, but
I've heard of it.

Speaker 5 (14:55):
Drew, you probably know, right, No, I'm with Ryan.

Speaker 7 (14:57):
It sounds familiar, but I can't. I can't give you the.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
Def The Streisand effect is when you try to suppress
some information and in the effort to do so, it
flushes it out even wider. All right, So, like twenty
years ago, there was a picture of the Malibu coast
taken the document Coastal Erosion, and this huge mansion near
the edge of this cliff as it is eroded. It

(15:22):
turns out that the mansion was Barbara Streisands. Nobody knew
it wasn't identified whatever, But she flipped out and her
lawyers tried to suppress the photograph and said, you can't
use that, that's our private residence. But all it did
was bring more attention to it. All it did was
cause people to search was Barbara Streisand's home, and then
they saw it. And then instead of like a few

(15:43):
people seeing it and nobody knowing it was her house,
millions of people saw it. So it completely backfired on her.
So Joey Chestnut has been banned from Nathan's Hot dog
eating contests. Hen he got banned because of his group
called Major League Eating is mad because he is sponsoring

(16:03):
now like a near meat or whatever you call those things,
like some sort of vegan hot dog. Well, all they're
doing by banning him is causing people to go, Oh,
I didn't know Joey Chestnut was sponsoring this other company.
I wonder who it is. I wonder if those are
any good? I mean, Drue, don't you think this is

(16:24):
a terrible idea, A for bringing more attention to the
fact that Joey Chestnut has a sponsorship, and b for
banning the guy who makes your event watchable. He's the
best ever.

Speaker 7 (16:37):
Oh, this is crazy. I even said yesterday that they
didn't kick him out of the Nathan's Contest. Nathan's removed
itself from the Joey Chestnut Contest. I mean, that is
his day. On July fourth, we tune in to watch
him do things no other human can do. It is
superhuman feats. And they just took out their their MVP,
their star. Name another competitive eater. Okay, Kobeyoshi hadn't done

(16:59):
it for ever, You don't get him. Name one that
would have been that'll be in the field this year.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Don't know.

Speaker 7 (17:04):
You don't know because that is Joey Chestnut's event, And
like you said, they hurt themselves and just gave more
attention to his brand and what he's promoting that they
were already upset with in the first place.

Speaker 5 (17:14):
He was at the Old Miss Spring game. I was
down there. They had a hot dog eating contest during
the spring game. I was like right next to him
as he's shoving hot dogs in his mouth. It is
It is the most disgusting thing you could be close
to that is televised. I mean I was. I was
absolutely absolutely disgusted. Ryan. Can you think of another sport

(17:36):
that took its star and said, nah, you know what,
we're pretty good. We don't need you, We're fine beat it.

Speaker 6 (17:46):
It's crazy because, like Drew said, the only reason you
know anything about competitive eating is because Joey Chestnut and
what he does and the craziness. And by the way
that I thought thought was really cool at the Old
Miss Spring Game. But like, if you're asking me to
think of somebody else, I mean, of course, everybody on
ESPN is going crazy because Caitlyn Clark got left off
the United States Olympic team. I mean, I can't think

(18:06):
of another one whether a superstar is left out of
the competition other than that, off the top of my head.

Speaker 5 (18:13):
What about when? What about when Michael Jordan went to
minor league baseball?

Speaker 7 (18:18):
Yeah, you're.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
A minor league.

Speaker 5 (18:27):
Why if you're Joey Chestnut, why didn't you start your
own eating league? Well, how hard could it be to
start a major league eating league?

Speaker 7 (18:36):
Impossible Foods or the brand or whatever that's gotten removed
from this. They should schedule one at the exact same time,
stream it or whatever, and just try to get as
much as they can from this. Go ahead to head,
have Joey eating his vegetable hot dogs or whatever he's doing.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
That that's the answer. Yeah, that's the answer.

Speaker 6 (18:52):
These impossible dogs have their own competition with Joey Chestnut
as the competent. Everybody's gonna watch it and not watch
the other one.

Speaker 5 (19:00):
And have you ever had have you ever tried impossible meat?

Speaker 4 (19:03):
Actually? I think I have.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
My girlfriend's really into this type of stuff. I don't
like it, but I was like, I'm curious, I'll try it.

Speaker 5 (19:11):
I mean, wait, hold on, hold on, you said I
think I have. Was she trying to hide it? From you.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
You have no idea the deception that goes on at
my house at dinner time. You know, like I think
that I'm eating French fries, but those are actually carrot
French fries. This type of thing that I'm talking about
with the impossible burgers. I think I'm eating, you know, beef,
and what is it. It's actually vegetable beef. So this
happens all the time. To me, I'm not Sometimes she

(19:38):
slides it by me and I don't realize it. But
there's other times I'm going, something's a little off here,
what's up with this?

Speaker 4 (19:45):
I go, I look at the package. It's it's not
real beef.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
I think. I think Shannon's trying to go with the
streisand effect here. I think he does it himself so
he can fit into the Spider Man costume that he's
going to wear tonight.

Speaker 6 (19:58):
Oh, with Tom, we make sure it's an extra extra
small Spider Man costume for Shannon tonight. Yes, I can't
wait to see him in. It's it's worth coming here
to see shanning the costume tonight.

Speaker 5 (20:09):
Well, why don't you talk about it? What we got
going on tonight? It's Marvel trivia.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
It's Marvel trivia. I hope somebody has already written my
questions for me. That way, there's no effort on my part.
I just have to look good in that Spider Man costume.
But it starts at seven o'clock. And how does this work?

Speaker 5 (20:25):
Ryan?

Speaker 3 (20:25):
I mean, you guys do trivia all the time at
the bar? Is it first come, first served? Do they
need to reserve a table or how does it work?

Speaker 2 (20:31):
There have been people calling for reservations.

Speaker 6 (20:33):
They are taking reservations, but you can you can come
here as well, Like we're not expecting it, you know,
to be where we have people out in the street.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
You know, you come and get a tab.

Speaker 3 (20:41):
Wait a minute, you're telling me I'm putting on a
costume and we're not expecting people to be knocking down
the door to try to come in and hang out
with me.

Speaker 4 (20:49):
Is that what you're saying. And you're saying I'm not
popular enough?

Speaker 2 (20:52):
I stay corrected.

Speaker 6 (20:53):
Yes, you probably need to call for reservation because they're
going to be packed here tonight. Thank you for Shannon
in a little Spider Man outfit.

Speaker 5 (20:59):
Yeah, what if I called to make a reservation and
I said my name was Hermione?

Speaker 4 (21:03):
How would you spell that her termion? You said it wrong, hermione.

Speaker 5 (21:10):
I can't wait for you to screw something up tonight.
Don't worry, I'll just get attacked by the Marvel class.

Speaker 4 (21:14):
I don't know, like you got to help me out.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
Here are the Harry Potter nerds and the comic book nerds?
Are they like on the same level of seriousness. Like
the Harry Potter nerds, you don't want to mess with them.
You screw one thing up, just pronounce something. They're ready to,
you know, cut your throat. But like our comic nerds
like that that into it, on the same level of
Harry Potter fans.

Speaker 8 (21:35):
I don't know, Drew, I feel like they could be
like I feel like the ultras, like the ones that
are really into it are are and that are like, oh,
we've got to show up.

Speaker 5 (21:46):
Maybe we've never been to Chaos Bar before, but we've
got to show up for trivia. I feel like they are.
They are just as dialed and.

Speaker 7 (21:52):
Drew I agree. I think he's much worse off Harry Potter.
I assumes a little younger. They have these brooms they
think they can rod on, not real Marvel. Well, he
might catch a thor hammer in the back of the
head if he's not asking these questions the way the
way they want the masked. I don't know what other
other Marvel weapons there are, but I would keep my
head on a swivel tonight if in case you screw up.

Speaker 5 (22:12):
Well, I am allowed to bring a thorn hammer in like,
if absolutely encouraged.

Speaker 6 (22:17):
Yeah, we want people to come dressed in costume to
join Shannon tonight for all the Marvel comic trivia.

Speaker 7 (22:22):
Maybe a rival Spider Man we could see who looks
better that.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
We could do the baseball Yeah, exactly, Yeah, be great.

Speaker 5 (22:31):
Oh, I can't wait. That's gonna be awesome. All Right,
we're gonna hear from Chris Burke when we come back
at the bottom of the hour. We're gonna get his
take on this College World Series field. It is all
SEC and SEC. Nobody else qualified, nobody else is invited.
It is just crazy to party part. It's nuts. I
don't think it's great for college baseball. That's a whole
nother conversation. Be Like, if I had a radio show,

(22:53):
we could talk about it. I don't know. Cassar continues
right after this.

Speaker 7 (22:58):
TJ.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
Smith, personal and attorney called TJ.

Speaker 7 (23:01):
He'll make them pay.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio present it by Stockton Mortgage.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
Here's Matt Jones, Mark.

Speaker 5 (23:08):
Sitting in for Matt Jones today. I think a lot
of Wednesdays over the course of this summer, we got
Drew and Ryan and Mario and Lexington, Shannons and Louisville.
The special guest today is also in Louisville. He's Chris Burke. Burkie,
You're a regular on Basilio show. You graduated from Tennessee,
even though you live in Louisville. Do you feel like
you're crossing over the dark side right now?

Speaker 9 (23:32):
I think the dark side probably a little hyperbole, but
I do feel like I'm on a road trip here.
I'm definitely playing as a visiting team, so I always
like hitting lead off on the road, so I'm enjoying this.

Speaker 5 (23:44):
Let's go all right, that's great. Hey, listen, I'm trying
to explain to these guys before we dial into like
the x's and o's, why Omaha is such a great trip,
whether you're going with your family or just with your
boys or baseball. Did you just want to go have
a couple of cold beers You've been going there for

(24:05):
since when nineteen? I mean you played in it, but
you've been covering it since eighteen or nine.

Speaker 9 (24:09):
No, the first year I was there as a broadcaster
fifteen and calling games since seventeen.

Speaker 5 (24:18):
I think, so seventeen. Okay, what is it about Omaha?
Like if you were just trying to sell somebody on
the idea that makes it a great event for a fan, right,
let's say kind of take the baseball out of it.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
What is.

Speaker 9 (24:33):
Well, it's eight different fan bases, So I think that
that makes it a blast. You get the experience, you know,
the the bigness of the event with people from all
different stretches of the country. This year it's a little
more regionalized than normal, but I do think that part
makes it fun and unique. The College World Series, it's

(24:55):
it's a big league environment from a from a grand
stage standpoint with kids, so you get the newness and
allness of young athletes experience experiencing the grandest stage most
of them will ever play on. So I think that's
really cool. And then I just think the city of Omaha,
the fact that it's in the same place every year,

(25:16):
you know, different but similar. In Augusta like you get
to know it, you fall in love with it. The
city really opens their arms to everybody, and the way
they've developed downtown with all the hotels and all the
restaurants and all the night life. Like everybody, especially from
the Kentucky fan base that's reached out to me as
first time travelers, is like, where you know, where should

(25:39):
I stay? And I just anywhere downtown. You have to
stay downtown because once you're downtown, all you got to
do is walk out your your hotel door, and the
world's your oysters. So it's a it's very unique in
that regard, and it's a it's a mus trip for
anybody that loves big sporting events.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
You put it really well, You explain it better than
I did. All right, give us, give us the odds.

Speaker 9 (26:03):
That would be a first tom. That would be.

Speaker 5 (26:07):
Tennessee is the number one national seed. They've got Florida
state to start things off. Like, if you had to
pick two favorites to make it to the finals right now,
who would they be? And why?

Speaker 9 (26:21):
You know, I think, at the risk of sounding cliche,
it would be Tennessee and Kentucky. I mean they're number
one and number two seeds for a reason. They're both
playing at a at a very high level. In the postseason,
you know, Kentucky obviously undefeated. Tennessee had the one hiccup
against an Evansville team that just you know, could absolutely mash.
But you know, I just think on paper, it's those

(26:42):
two teams for two different reasons. I think Tennessee's the
bigness of the ballpark and the Tennessee the win for
the wind to blow in. Its certainly not advantageous for Tennessee,
but people forget it's a very good defense, especially in
very good outfield defense. And it's the number three e
r A in the country. So even though they probably
won't hit seven home runs like they did in Game

(27:04):
three of the Super Regional, the their power is not
flucish if you look at you know, Kentucky fans saw
how many home runs they hit in that series. So
it's it's an offense that is certainly capable of hitting
the ball out of any ballpark. But it's a probably
it's a more complete team than I think people give
them credit for. And then from Kentucky standpoint, and I'm

(27:25):
just excited about the brand of ball they play. I
think that they're they're up in this event was probably
uh Virginia as far as a offense that I don't
think is concerned at all about the the offensive environment
and whether the ball is getting out of the ballpark
or not. And I think from that standpoint, Kentucky's offense
has a chance to shine. Now. I was very concerned

(27:47):
about Kentucky's bullpen down the stretch of the of the
season and into Hoover. But man, have they pitched fantastic
in this in the postseason. So maybe those those struggles
or behind them, and if they get the pitching that
they've had the last few weekends, Kentucky's going to be
a very tough out in this deal.

Speaker 5 (28:07):
What about the style of play, Like, how does that
how does that fit for Kentucky in that ballpark?

Speaker 9 (28:13):
Yeah, I just I think again, I think their hitters,
you know, Kentucky Proud Park is already it's I think,
dimensions wise, it's it's almost identical to Charles schwap Field.
So and if you talk to Mene, that was part
of the design of why they did that way, and
especially early in the year Kentucky, Like if you look

(28:33):
at Kentucky's home runs, they were a top five home
run hitting team in SEC play, but not overall for
the season. I think part of that is just, you
know what, it's cold and windy early. That ballpark plays
really big, and so I don't think it's an offense
that is spooked if they show up one day and
the winds blown in twenty miles an hour. Because they
take hit by pitches, because they steal bases, because they

(28:55):
bumper hit, because they sacked bunt up and down the
lineup and if you look at it, led the league
in doubles. So it's an offense that can slug but
doesn't necessarily rely on home runs.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
Chris, Hey, this Ryan Lemon.

Speaker 6 (29:08):
We know you're a Tennessee guy, but you're from Saint
X and Kentucky's first baseman Saint X guy, and he's
you know, Ryan Nicholson has had this unbelievable year. But
this is where Kentucky's taking such advantage of the transfer portal.
You know, they're shortstoffs from incarnate word. You know, Ryan
Nicholson transferred from Cincinnati. I mean they got all these
guys where the transfer portal. This is the good part

(29:30):
of the transfer portal when you see these guys like
Ryan Nicholson getting a chance to play on a big
stage that he probably wouldn't have got last year at Cincinnati.

Speaker 9 (29:37):
Yeah. I mean, first of all, my man, Ryan Nicholson
like such a cool story. My dad called me. I
don't know, I guess it was probably six years ago now,
And to Ryan Nicholson's senior year, I believe him and
a kid by name of Cam Shielder both went to Cincinnati,
and then they had a shortstop by the name of
Trey Sweeney that ended up being a first round pick

(29:58):
by the Yankees and now in Triple A with the
with the Dodgers, and ended up going to Eastern Illinois
or Southern Illinois, some small school like and three kids
that my dad really loved that did not get Power
five offers.

Speaker 5 (30:12):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (30:13):
And I remember specifically, my dad like Nicholson the best,
so he and I have gotten a kick out of
watching Nicholson have such a such a great season. And
you're right. The transfer portal is a huge part of
Kentucky Store. I mean pooser. Their their ace is from
college at Charleston and Cami O'Bryant, one of their best
relievers is I want to say Boston College or he's

(30:33):
a portal guy. Then you look at their lineup third days, shortstop,
first base, left field, and center field, I believe are
all are all transfer players. So Nick Benzione has killed
the portal and I think specifically the addition of Nicholson,
because Nicholson really represents how well they played in the SEC.
This year He's got whatever, He's got twenty home runs.

(30:55):
I think seventeen or sixteen of them were inn SEC game,
So they would not be where they are without Ryan Nicholson.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
Have you a lot Let you go? Oh, go ahead, Ryan,
go ahead?

Speaker 7 (31:07):
Drew here got one more question, Chris, You had a
lot of success in baseball, got a pretty famous walk off,
and the majors had several years there. But just looking back,
how important is just that memory of making it to
own MA Hall and being with your college guys and
just that experience looking back? And how much will Kentucky's
players Do you think they'll remember it whatever happens there?

Speaker 9 (31:26):
Yeah, I think there's two parts to your question that
are important. Number One, you know, the College World Series
really is the pinnacle of our sport, and so once
you you don't realize it, like a lot of things,
I'm sure you guys can relate to. There's a lot
of things that happen when you're twenty twenty two years
old that you don't appreciate, but certainly the achievement of

(31:48):
getting there as a team is something that will carry
these men forever. Kentucky University, you know, does such a
great job of celebrating their legends, and this is a
team that'll they'll they'll get called back ten year reunion,
twenty years reunion. You know, they'll they'll be able to
celebrate this so much as their as their life unfolds.
And again, most of these kids will never play in
the big league, so you know, these pictures will hang

(32:10):
in their offices, these stories will be told forever, and
so from that perspective, it's really cool. I also am
super excited for the Kentucky fan base as a whole,
because you know, for me, like the watching new fan
bases fall in love with the sport is one of
my favorite things about doing what I do, and so

(32:33):
Tennessee has definitely done that over the last five years.
And to see the Kentucky fan base get to experience
the modern college baseball game, the journey of a great
regular season and then now culminating College World Series just
a joy, especially for a kid who grew up in
the great state of Kentucky. So for that, I'm excited.
But lastly, I think the challenge for a team that

(32:54):
makes it either for the first time in a while
or the first time ever is to actually lock in
and and remember you're playing for a national championship. And
so from that standpoint, I'm very curious to see how
Kentucky performs, because you know, it's easy to get bright
eyed and and and maybe get away from the focus of,

(33:16):
you know, each pitch in each of bat because there
are so many new demands and it is such a
big event.

Speaker 5 (33:22):
Barky, before I let you go, give me one team
outside of those two that has the ability to win
the whole thing.

Speaker 9 (33:32):
I think Virginia is very scary. I love their offense.
This is Virginia's third time in the last four years.
They're pitching almost reminds me of when they won it
all in fifteen, where it's like they really only have
five guys, but their five guys are are like on
a heater and really pitching with a lot of confidence.

(33:53):
And I just have seen the way Brian O'Connor manages
his offense in the College World Series like they have
no album playing whatever style will play, the circumstances and
the weather dictate. So I would say Virginia to me
is a team outside of the other top two that

(34:13):
I've that I have circled to win the whole thing.

Speaker 5 (34:17):
Dude, thanks for coming on. I really appreciate it. I
know you're going to have a blast up there. Can't
wait to watch my pleasure.

Speaker 9 (34:23):
I appreciate the opportunity. Thanks for thanks for inviting me
on the road. Appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (34:29):
That's Chris Burke. He'll be calling the College World Series
from Friday all the way through to the to the
very end and the National Championship. Now. Now, Burkey's a volunteer,
and he played at Tennessee and he hurt Drew's braves
with a walk off home run in the eighteenth inning
against Joey Devine. So he's got he's got a couple

(34:50):
of marks against him, but he is an awesome dude
and one of my dearest friends. And I want him
to feel the power. Here's my idea for the day.
I want him to feel the hour of this show.
So like if you know him, because he lives in Louisville.
There's a lot of people listening right now that know him.
Send him a text, be like, bro, that was great,
love having you on the show. Or or tweet him, hey, dude,

(35:12):
that was great love having you on the show. Because
he thinks Basilio's show is bigger than this one. So
I just I think it'd be nice, and it'd be
nice to give him a little reminder, you know what
I mean?

Speaker 6 (35:21):
Like, what is he on Twitter?

Speaker 5 (35:25):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (35:26):
Is it at Chris bur two? Is that him we
got to find Yeah, we we We've definitely got it.

Speaker 7 (35:33):
Yes, that is at Chris Burke O two correct.

Speaker 5 (35:36):
I think I also think it would be really like
if you there are plenty of people now that have
played golf with Chris Burke in Louisville, that know him
from Louisville, know his family. There are plenty of people
listening to have his phone number. Just just shoot him
a text, you know, hey, dude, that was great. I
think that'd be loveful. We got one more break, Shannon

(35:56):
in the hour, and we take it an hour later.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
Let's take it right now.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
Let's take it right now, and we've got a lot
to talk about. When we returned, Jerry West has passed away.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
I love get it.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
On Drew's birthday, we'll talk about that. Kentucky Sports Radio
continues after this, we continue to celebrate Drew's birthday an
epic day. We're gonna make it like I don't know
if you guys have noticed this, but like twenty year
olds now thirty year olds, they don't just have a birthday,
they have a birthday week. Yes, I feel like that's

(36:29):
a that's a little like, look at me selfish and
we never had a birthday week. But that being said,
Drew deserves it, and I feel like this vacation is
gonna be a birthday week for you. Is that what
I'm what I'm sensing accurate? Uh?

Speaker 7 (36:44):
Yes. My wife always makes fun of me because we
just put our schedules work out. We always vacation around
my birthday and she always makes fun of it that
it's the week of my birthday and my birthday trip.
So you're not helping my argument, but uh yeah, that's
that's what we have ahead and I'm gonna make the
most of it. I said earlier. I hope I just
ride it right into Omaha.

Speaker 6 (37:03):
Well, starting in a couple of minutes at eleven o'clock,
we're going to have the Drew Franklin Birthday Special. Oh,
craft beer pints are only four dollars and fifty cents
today in your honor all day, Chas Bar and grill.

Speaker 7 (37:15):
You're gonna make me have a beer before noon.

Speaker 6 (37:16):
You got to say it, though, Gail, You got to
say I want the Drew Franklin Birthday Special craft beer
pints only four fifty.

Speaker 7 (37:22):
Be careful saying that around town. Say it here, but
you don't know what you'll get saying that. Well, shout
out to cass Bar. I appreciate it. I might have
to partake the first one.

Speaker 5 (37:34):
Where's the worst place you could use that line? Like
if you walk to the front desk of X establishment,
what is the word? Where? Where in Lexington do you
not want to say that?

Speaker 7 (37:44):
Oh, if Defenser's working at ten roof, they might pull
something out of the back. I don't know, Yeah, I
don't know.

Speaker 4 (37:50):
What about the massage parlor?

Speaker 7 (37:53):
None of that activity.

Speaker 2 (37:56):
Got it.

Speaker 7 (37:57):
Got a few favorite spots around town though that that
might provide something if you were to say that, You're quick.

Speaker 5 (38:03):
To the night. Jerry West passed away guys. He was
eighty six years old. He was the one that built
the Lakers in their ten titles in the in the
eighties and two thousands. Then he was an advisor to
Golden State's run. But he was also an incredible player,
Captain of the US Olympic team in nineteen sixty fourteen

(38:24):
time All Star, twelve time All NBA, five time All
Defensive Team, and the logo that's on every goal is
Jerry west Ran. What do you think of first? Like
that is a storied career as a player and an executive,
what do you think of first when you hear Jerry

(38:45):
west name.

Speaker 6 (38:46):
Well, when he was a player, that was just that
was a little before my time. I was still a
little guy, so I don't I don't really remember him
as a player. So my memory of him is just
seeing the highlight, the replay highlights and him win a
wristband and a really good player. But then the main
memory though, was him putting me, like you said, putting
that Lakers team together, as the man that kind of

(39:08):
made that dynasty real was Jerry ress Wes putting all
the pieces together.

Speaker 5 (39:15):
Showtime Lakers Drew may been one of the most fun
teams ever ever put together between the glitz and glamour
of Hollywood and Magic Johnson and the NBA was just
like on such a rocket ship rise at that time.

(39:35):
I feel like that was you could put him on
the Mount rushmore most exciting teams.

Speaker 7 (39:40):
Of course, like I guess most of us on here
and listening, I don't remember Jerry West the player. I
know he went to the finals several times, all of
his accomplishments, but I think of him more of the
GM as the Lakers or the best player out of
West Virginia. But I think the HBO show, and part
of me struggles with how much that was exact and
how much was it because part of it is like

(40:01):
Jerry West didn't want Magic Johnson, but then he drafted
Magic Johnson ended up obviously one of the best Lakers
of all time, and what was he the GM for
like twenty years? So you think of all those teams,
that was a part of it. But that that HBO
show is where I've learned a lot of my Jerry
West knowledge and I'm just hoping it's all accurate or
close to it.

Speaker 5 (40:18):
At least he didn't want to draft Magic.

Speaker 7 (40:21):
That was a storyline in there. Yeah, Sidney Montcreef, I
think was Jerry West pick he didn't see a six
eight six nine point guard working out in the NBA.

Speaker 6 (40:29):
That there's some kind of legendary story Tom and I
always need like Oscar Combs or somebody when Jerry Wes's
is being recruited, like eight off Rupp was like he
almost went to Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (40:37):
I think that's the story.

Speaker 6 (40:38):
Everybody tells that Jerry West almost came to Kentucky before
picking West Virginia.

Speaker 5 (40:45):
That would have been that would have been something. I'll
try to find it. I'll try to find that for
out number two, Shannon. Do we have some callers?

Speaker 2 (40:54):
We do? We do.

Speaker 4 (40:55):
Let's go to Diane.

Speaker 10 (40:57):
Hey, good morning guy, I'm sure are you all today?
Hey calling up? Have a little bit of input on
Ryan going to Omaha. A little story. My dad, who
since passed, and my son who was about ten at
the time, we dropped everything. Sunday afternoon, drove to New
Jersey to watch Pope and the Cats beat Syracuse and

(41:20):
we spent the night in Pennsylvania, got to the game,
didn't have tickets, came back, started back that night, so
we made basically a two day trip out of it,
and I'll never forget it and I'm so glad we
did it.

Speaker 5 (41:36):
That's awesome. Thanks for the call, Dan. Yeah, it's about
it's about making memories right and having experiences even when
they're imperfect. I think that's I think the most imperfect
experiences are the best. Like, oh, bro, it took us
twelve hours to get there. I mean, you know, Drew,
like not everything's going to be Disney World where every

(41:56):
sidewalk is perfect, right.

Speaker 7 (41:58):
Yeah, that's why you don't think of about the twelve
hours you're in the car. You're just looking forward to
that experience you're about to have, whether it be Omaha
or a basketball game. You tone out the logistics of
getting there.

Speaker 5 (42:10):
Yeah, and if you get bored, you can always work
on your aids. I mean, there's plenty of things to
do it on a long road trip. I've got another
picture I'm gonna put on my Instagram and I'll talk
you through why cause drama back of this
