This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Now here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
All right, get up, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys
and girls, grandpa's and grandmall's, aunts and uncles. That is
the Friday edition of Kentucky Sports Radio, as always sponsored
by the TJ. Smith Office. Because TJ. We heard him
on the radio yesterday. What's you gonna do?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Shannon will make them pay. He'll make a great cameo
he had yesterday.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
That was a great cameo yesterday. Hey, those guys, that's
part of my take. Guys, they love him from TJ.
Smith because he's always gonna make them pay. We got Ryan,
we got Drew, we got Shannon the dude. Mario's here
already taking videos and pictures, and we've got a big
show here on Friday. Of course, you can call us
on the Clarks publish out phone number which is eight
five nine two eight h two two eight seven. We'll
have our Whiskey Thief song of the day, We'll have
(01:15):
our Don Franklin call today, and we'll also have our
Kentucky branded tweet of the day. And Shannon actually the
part of my take. I did a better job awarding
that than we do most of the time.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Today, Yeah, they did a great job yesterday. And I'm
sure we're gonna get into it. But man of the
I think eight years they've been hosting KSR, that was
the absolute best one.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
I mean, how do you top that one next year?
Speaker 5 (01:36):
That's the best one.
Speaker 6 (01:38):
Yeah, I mean, certainly for a summer guest host show,
that might be the best show ever.
Speaker 7 (01:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:42):
I mean, my phone was blowing up the moment they
announced with Patino.
Speaker 7 (01:47):
My jaw was on the floor at home.
Speaker 6 (01:49):
I couldn't believe they got him on those airwaves when
they were teasing a special guest. I was just thinking
it's gonna be Jack Goldkid, never gonna troll us. I
even texted Shannon, like, do not let this happen? You know,
is it Jack out in front of it? But it
wasn't Gold. Ye, it was even a bigger surprise.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
So we're gonna get to that. Like I said, we
got a big show today.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
The Marino brothers are gonna join us live here at
ks Bar at ten thirty. Michael Marino, who just finished
one of the best careers ever at EKU and his
little seven foot brother Malachi Marino, who was one of
the biggest recruits in the country right now.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
So those guys are both gonna be here. That hat
a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Do me a favorite Ryan, get a picture next to him.
I want to see the heights.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Yeah, that's a good idea US Trimble County Day. We'll
get to that at eleven o'clock. I know you guys
all did your Trimble County homework last night.
Speaker 6 (02:32):
I committed a lot of time to my Trimble County homework.
I will say, even though I did my research, this
might be one if any callers want to call in
and help out a bit.
Speaker 7 (02:41):
I don't know how you did, but I just I'm.
Speaker 6 (02:43):
Not saying the county didn't have a lot going on.
I might have just been looking in the wrong of course.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
So let's go ahead and let's start jones in for
a Trimble county or now, because we're ready, we need
some help. It's that's maybe the one county I'm worried about.
We may not get a call from.
Speaker 6 (02:56):
Yeah, I've got a few facts, but we could use
some help.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
One guy got drafted last night. One guy didn't. So
we got a lot to talk about. But you're right,
we have to start with the part of my take
guys on the show and Rick Patino's call, like you drew.
As soon as Patino came on, my phone blew up
and it stayed that way. The rest of the day.
Went to El Mariachi. Last night, people were talking about
Rick Patino. I mean everywhere you go. That was the
(03:21):
highlight maybe of the summer. Rick Patino, that we have ridiculed,
ridiculed and chastised and made fun of forever on this
show came on this show and killed it. He was
so good. I mean at the start when he first
came on, I'm like, oh, Patino, Man, Matt's not gonna
(03:42):
like this. Patino's on KSR. But by the end of
the call, I found myself like, going, that was awesome.
I can see myself falling in love with him again.
Speaker 5 (03:51):
It was awesome.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Oh that far, well, it didn't quite give me to
that point, but I was very entertained. I knew an
he came on the pardon my take, you guys know
how to toll that line. They weren't gonna, you know,
let him just come on here and basically troll Kentucky fans.
So I figured they were up to something. I did
not expect Rick to basically just spend the whole time
trying to get back in yeah BBN's good graces when hey,
(04:16):
I was the most shocked when he was on the show.
But I had to pick my jaw off the floor
again when he said that he has been donating to
Kentucky football and has been in contact with Nick min Jones,
you know, supporting the baseball run.
Speaker 8 (04:29):
Man.
Speaker 6 (04:29):
I know, he his Pope guy, and you know, little
of this is playing up Pope, but the fact that
he has been giving his own money to the football program,
I'm still in shock over that.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
That was the biggest I think jaw dropper of the
whole interview is that he's friends with Mark Stoops and
he's donated to the football and I a rot a personal.
Speaker 7 (04:47):
Name, Eddy Grant too.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Yeh. Try.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
He didn't mention any grand Mark Stoops, any grand and
that he also has supported the baseball team, because he'd
made the statement already that he would write a check
for the basketball team.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
I thought I was just Betino spouting off.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Again you find out, well, he's done it for football
and for baseball.
Speaker 6 (05:03):
I kind of took that as a little dig at
the past regime too. Oh yeah, he's supported everything, but
that one. I just I couldn't believe he said that
out loud, even just saying Cayle's name and saying we
need to move forward. I mean, Rick's still an active
coach in college basketball. You're usually not talking about what
someone else did somewhere, but he's talking about how, you know,
Cayle's time had run up and we all need to
(05:23):
move on and embrace Pope. As I'm sitting here repeating it,
I still can't believe yesterday morning happened. A lot of it.
I think, you know, he's Rick I'm not gonna let
him get me all the way. You said you're falling
in love. I'm not there yet. There's still a little
we'll be us in there. But he went a long
way with a lot of fans. There's no denying that,
because he was whether he meant it or it was orchestrated,
(05:44):
from the beginning, he was saying what he needed to
say to to get BBN to love him again.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Shannon like yoga girl was like giddy yesterday because she
was at UK during the Patino run and like, there
you have that rese fond memories of him, and then
he came yesterday as that guy.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
He came across to me as very humble, very respectful.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
I mean even when he called in.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Like I knew that he was calling in and I
see the long lid up and I'm going, holy crap.
He goes, yeah, this is Rick Patino, and it was
just I don't know his demeanor, Like I always thought
Rick kind of being a like, I don't know, pretentious
kind of I don't know what the correct ward would be, right,
you know, snobby, you know, personality, like I'm better than
you personality. But even talking to me off the air,
(06:26):
you know, our thirty second conversation. I thought, you know,
he sounded like a really nice guy. So maybe I
had him wrong all this time. I don't know, but
I thought he did a great job on uh with
part of my take. And you know, those guys too,
have had plenty of years on this show just making
nothing but Patino jokes.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
So I don't know that he's aware of any of that,
probably not, But for.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Him to come on the show and to come on
Kentucky Sports Radio, that's a moment that I thought I
would never say. I thought that hell was freezing over,
pigs were flying. Rick Patino was on KSR. Holy crap
on that.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
I heard him on their show about a month ago.
And he's away of all the jokes.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
So that makes it even better.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
If he's laughing along, Okay, if he's laughing along he
can have a sense of humor to go along with it,
then that makes me like him even more.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
I don't like it now, it's too much.
Speaker 6 (07:13):
Once it was too much for eleven AM yesterday, I
was overwhelmed.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Well, then in the past two months, with Patino's video
he made supporting Mark Pope, won a lot of us
over and then I think that appearance yesterday on KSR
gonna win some more people.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Over one other thing too, Like he called, like just
a little behind the scenes thing.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
He called right.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Before we hit the heartbreak, Like, you know, we hit
the heartbreak at what ten twenty nine or whatever it is,
he calls like ten twenty eight. I'm like, man, I
might have to tell him to call back because I
don't want to just have Patinos sitting on hold for
five minutes, right. So then he says, Okay, I'll call
you back.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
In four minutes. We come back on the air.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
He hasn't called. I'm going, oh, no, is he not
gonna call. I'm not gonna be blamed for hanging up
on Rick Patino. You know, I'm thinking that the whole time.
But luckily he called back. But I thought it was great.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
It was it was great.
Speaker 7 (08:00):
I was trying to not let it impact me too much.
And I'm at home.
Speaker 6 (08:03):
I got my little desk, little home office set up,
and he's talking and over my shoulder, I have a
Rick Patino signed basketball from when I was at his
camp in ninety six to my rights, little poster on
the wall with like a young Mark Pope and Jeff
Shepherd and they're were in the old uniform.
Speaker 7 (08:16):
I'm like, it's it's.
Speaker 6 (08:17):
Happening at that, it's coming back. I can't let the
tattoo is still on him. I cannot forget that it's true.
But yesterday he made up a lot of ground.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
I would admit, well, this is what this was a
quote yesterday.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Kentucky fans, to me are very special. I got nothing
but great things to say about Kentucky fans. I totally
get it. Today while they were bitter at me going
to the University of Louisville. You know, these things that
he's saying is like it It's makes me.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
These saying all the right things.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
He is saying all the right things, just like Mark
Pope said all the right things when he was hired
as the basketball coach.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Patina was saying all the right things.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
Now he wants to be able to come here for
forever and just go to games, go eat downtown and
be a Kentucky And again he set it up for that.
It seems it's gonna happen. Shannon said this on his
pre show. I think for us to ultimately get to
that point, something has to be done about that tattoo.
It's you cannot be an ambassador of UK with that
(09:14):
on your back. So until we get all the way
back with Rick, he's got to do something about the
what is it the twenty went into title but he's
got the L and the yeah, what was supposed to
be a title?
Speaker 7 (09:25):
Now.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
The other news Nuggety dropped, besides the him donating money
to football, which still just blows my mind, was they
tried to work He said, they tried to work out
a game with UK this year. It didn't work out,
but they're probably gonna play it next year at Rope,
which will be the thirty year anniversary of the ninety sixteen,
and then the following season go to Madison Square Garden.
(09:48):
The way he is has and what he's done, he'll
be applauded and celebrated with that ninety six team. Oh
as long as Pope and Kentucky beats him, you gotta
beat him. You're inviting him here, you better beat him.
But if this had happened a year or two ago,
when Cow's here, you're booing him. Now, look how much
we've flipped. Knowing that that ninety sixteen and Pope and
(10:09):
Patino coming back and then thirty year reunion.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
Our whole attitude has changed about this man.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
We're a fickle fan base, There's no doubt about it.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
That's a great way to put it.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
We can turn on a dime on anybody.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
So what at what age are people like I was
talking to this yoga girl, like, if you're born before
nineteen ninety maybe nineteen ninety one, you don't know Patino
as the Kentucky coach. You know, you were six, seven
years old, eight years old maybe tops when Patino was
the coach here. You don't know that, like Mario I
asked him. Mario said, I only know him as the
(10:42):
Louisville coach. So what is that age where if you're older,
you know, if you're the you know a certain age
you're like, you remember the glory days, you're willing to
forgive him. And what's the age where like you never,
you're never gonna forget the guy. Your memory flipped you
off when he walked out of up he's got a
Louisville tattoo.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
What's where is that age? Where does it fall?
Speaker 6 (11:00):
I'd say about thirty and younger, probably doesn't. Probably a
lot of little of the memories more middle fingers. I mean,
he is my first memories. So I'm like when I
fell in love with Kentucky basketball, it was the Patino
was just getting started. Like one of my first memories
is like the Brasso tip in. I remember the Latner
Shop and I like the game. I was too young
for that. I've said many times the ninety six the
(11:23):
Metal with Lands logo. I have on everything in my
house that I could possibly put it on. That will
be my favorite team forever. So I just speaking for
my age range, I'm late thirties about tip forty. I
think a lot of us have that nostalgia sneaking up
around going back to that Sunday revival we've had with Pope,
and I've enjoyed going back to that is the age though.
I mean, certainly Mario I understand, I'd say a little
(11:45):
younger than me probably has some Patino memories. But after that,
I mean, he was he was gone after ninety seven.
That's been a long time from now.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Shanny, you's about same age as Dre. You're a little older,
so you probably feel about kind of the same way.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah, I think Drew is right about that. I don't
know that it's like a certain age group. And are
you guys in a wind tunnel all of a sudden.
Speaker 6 (12:03):
What's going on? He was passing the headset to Mario.
We're getting picked out, figure out.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
On Yeah, But I think there's probably right on with that.
I think, you know, there's still some fans though, and
I'm talking about Marcia who still won't like Rick Patino regardless.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Right like, no matter what he says.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
So I think there's still some fans that are just
gonna dislike Patino for going to Louisville, and that's one
of those things that are that's unforgivable for a lot
of fans. But I think for the most part, we've
kind of come around on them. This whole thing with
Patino has gone full circle.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Mario, you heard the interview I did. You said you
don't remember him as a Kentucky Coat. You were born
in nineteen ninety nine, what you.
Speaker 7 (12:37):
Were born in You're getting old though, I'm getting there.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
So how do you think uk Pha is your age?
Speaker 4 (12:46):
How do they view Patino and how do you feel
about him after that interview yesterday?
Speaker 9 (12:51):
I view him as the Louisville coach. That's kind of
what I remember him.
Speaker 8 (12:55):
By.
Speaker 9 (12:55):
I didn't even know. Did you say he had a
Louisville tattoo?
Speaker 5 (12:58):
He does?
Speaker 7 (12:58):
That's insane, big one, big one.
Speaker 9 (13:00):
I did not know that Paty tat But yeah, I
view him as a Louisville coach. Never really I've seen
pictures videos of him being a coach at UK. But
that's why I know him as the Louisville coach.
Speaker 6 (13:12):
I think that's an obstacle we have to overcome a
little bit with the younger crowd. Yeah, because I even
though I'm still not there yet, I have a bank
full of memories, and the people younger, they don't have
any of that to go back to.
Speaker 5 (13:24):
They just know he flipped us off last time he
was at.
Speaker 7 (13:26):
Repperina and that Cal whooped him.
Speaker 5 (13:28):
Every year Cal whooped him, and he's got the tattoo.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
So it's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out,
because obviously Pope is gonna want him back in good
graces with the fan base, especially for that game next year,
if they play that thirty anniversary game.
Speaker 6 (13:42):
That's gonna have. They've both mentioned that several times. I
think they tried to get it kind of set up
this year and they said they couldn't. But uh, getting
the return trip to New York too, Just chilling fans.
John CALIPERI loved going to New York. I think Mark
Pope might love New York more than him. So get
used to that being a regular thing as well, not
just with saying Saint John's. I think we're gonna have
a lot of New York in our future.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
The Marino Brothers are here. They're gonna join us at
ten thirty. Live here on Kentucky's Sports Radio.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
Oh he's very tall, you.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Can't hear you. We'll take your calls as well. Eighty
step nine two two two eight seven. That's the Clark
Puppet Shop on What did he say? I said he
knows he's tall. You know that's very true. Uh, and
we'll be right back. This is Ryan Drew and Shannon
on Kentucky's Ports Radio. Welcome back Kentucky's Sports Radio. Ryan
(14:31):
Drew and Shannon here taking your calls on the Clark's
Pumpy Shop phone line eight five nine two A two
two eight seven. We've also got the a Vision Glass
text machine five oh two seven three five three six
eight Oh got some good wines, Drew, let's hear him
imagine telling someone after Patino flipped us off that in
twenty twenty four people would hate John more than Rick.
Speaker 7 (14:51):
It's insane.
Speaker 6 (14:51):
Someone wrote yesterday and said, imagine, say it's twenty twenty
that Rick would be on KSR before cow.
Speaker 5 (14:59):
That's true. That's good point.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
Here's another one on the abs and glass tax machine.
I was twenty one when Patino left. I'm now forty eight,
and yesterday I became a fan again.
Speaker 7 (15:08):
It's been a lot of that. Sounded like you did
it too.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
I've seen several people in my own friend group have
have gone back. It's like I said, it's happening. I'm
not there yet, but it's happening all around me.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
I think that the part of my tight guys are
doing just fine. Until they had Golky on that they
may well have had Lightner on after that. We knew
that was coming. We knew you even said it. We
were doing the bartending here at the bar the other night.
The surprise guess is Golkie.
Speaker 7 (15:33):
I knew they have a relationship.
Speaker 6 (15:34):
He's done their show, he sells a T shirt through them,
He's done lots of barstool things, so I knew they
had that contact. Contact and it would pop up. I
didn't expect it to be as therapeutic as it was.
I gotta admit, even though he was looking in our
face and dissing us, I kind of needed to hear
him say how bad the preparation was in guarding him. Yeah,
(15:57):
like I thought that watching we all did, but him
basically calling out Kentucky, like how did you all not
pick me up in the full court? As much as
that hurt, it was closure. I needed to hear him
say that. Does that make sense? I know, I know
a lot of people turned off the radio because he's
insulting us on our airwaves, But at the same time,
I'm like, I needed that.
Speaker 7 (16:16):
I thank you for saying that out loud.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
He refused to apologize, and you know what, I love it.
He shouldn't have apologized, shouldn't apologize, as he said, everybody
in the world knew that Golki was hot, except for Klipieri.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
Well, I think it was PFT asking were you surprised
they didn't change and do something to try to stop you,
and Golkie's like, yeah, they didn't do anything different, he laughed.
Speaker 6 (16:35):
He laughed at us, Yeah, and that I hate giving
him credit. But that's exactly what happened to while we
went home, and I think we needed to hear it,
even though it hurt a little bit.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
He tried to call in, by the way as Jack
from Oakland, like I wouldn't know, like he was trying
to trick me. He called in on the hotline. I'm
going okay, they already told me I'm in on the joke, Jack,
I got you.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
Well, then you put him on the air though as
Jack for well that's.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
What he wanted to go on as Okay, all right.
Speaker 6 (16:58):
I don't think this was intentional, but you know, in
times right now, you've you've kept up with Kendrick and Drake,
right oh yeah, not like us was the final blow
to Drake, I believe. I think yesterday pardon my take,
unintentionally did a cow dis track a little bit like
the Patino stuff and then letting a player come on
and talk about how a coach didn't do his job
(17:18):
good enough. I don't think they meant for it to
go that direction, but I kind of felt like the
whole episode was a Caliperi dis.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
Track, and you know, usually they try to pocus, but
maybe in a weird way, we became more endearing to
the hip hop.
Speaker 6 (17:31):
Well, they started by making fun of that Arkansas tweet
that needed to be made fun of, true, but right
away they went straight to what is Arkansas doing?
Speaker 7 (17:37):
Those are Kentucky players. You can't claim them.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
So even though I don't think they said let's all
go at cal today, it kind of ended that way
without all the conversations went.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
Eight five nine two two two eight seven. Who we got, Shannon?
Speaker 3 (17:49):
All right, let's start with Marcia. Chef's gonna have a
little bit of a different opinion.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
I think I know, Marshall, what was your feeling after
yesterday hearing Patina on the show?
Speaker 10 (18:00):
Well, that, pardon my take. They do everything they can
to insult Kentucky. So there you go. That's the icing
on the cake. He is like Donald Trump just says what.
He's a con man. He's a salesman. Oh, fall back
in love with me. Forget all that I've done. I
(18:23):
could care less about him going to Louisville. I could
care less about his tattooes, his freckles, his bows, whatever
he's got. He's still a morally corrupt person. He's just
he's these white coaches that cheat and their Black assistants
(18:44):
are being for life. I don't think Andre McGee thinks
much of him. And forget all that. Bruce Pearl, Dave Bliss,
Rick Bettino, all cheat and the assistants take the fault.
He's nothing to be at my to me nothing and
he just and I believe he cut that check when
(19:05):
I see the cancel check. Just it's just, it's just
he's just a con man. I mean, it's just. I
don't believe nothing he says. I have no respect for him,
appreciated him when he was here, but he's left, and
he's talked about us, made jokes about us. Don't come
on here and say how much you like the Kentucky fans.
(19:28):
I remember every little snarky remark he's made. IM might
he might as well had Christian Rightner and him call in.
I don't find that entertaining. I don't find it entertaining
at all. And it was insulting. It's insulting to Matt,
it's accepting to everybody. Oh, I'll come on the show now,
(19:49):
and Tom and pray Satino and and and and to
talk bad about Cam. Oh God, and we Morley correct,
We are Morley correct.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
But Marcia isn't Klaus salesman too, Yeah.
Speaker 10 (20:08):
But he sure is. But he ain't telling me that
he's a good person. He is a good person. Patino
is stems. He had sex with a woman in a
restaurant and another woman went to prison. A woman left
her four children and went to prison over that stumbag. Yeah, Marc,
(20:32):
don't compare John and Rich.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
I want you to go for a nice long walk today,
have a little lemonade, and we love you and you are,
without a doubt our whiskey thiefs, Don Franklin.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Paul the day you got Ryan befuddled after that?
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Yeah, that is the doc Fran all the year. So
thank you, Marcia, I love you, guys.
Speaker 7 (20:49):
All right to keep that l's down energy.
Speaker 4 (20:51):
Marcia fired up right now and we knew, we knew
she how she felt before she even started.
Speaker 6 (20:55):
That's why he's not gonna win everyone. The young people
are gonna have a problem. And there's many Marshes out
there too. They don't want to hear it.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
We got tied for another squeeze one on one more
on Shannon, Let's go to Evan. Go ahead, Evan, guys.
Speaker 10 (21:10):
I don't maybe I missed this, but we to find
out when he donated to the football program, because that
has got to be one of the most fitful things
against cal Perry that I.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
Have heard that that that he has done, and they
go back a long time.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
Well appreciate it. Yeah, I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
Called agreed that was the biggest jaw dropper yesterday that
he's friends with Mark Stoops and Eddie gran and donated
to the NIL fund.
Speaker 6 (21:41):
I don't know when it was, but adamsz Agoria tweeted
that it was fifteen thousand dollars.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
So you know the amount somehow.
Speaker 6 (21:49):
Yeah, Adams the Gory tweeted that yesterday. Didn't say when
he did it, but he had had that info.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
Is Adams Agory the one that shook Shannon's finger?
Speaker 7 (21:56):
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
I thought it was that.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
I don't even know that guy's name.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
It's some politician, right, Yeah, he was a reporter. Oh
it wasn't Zagoria.
Speaker 7 (22:04):
Now wasn't wasn't Zagoria? Okay, eight five nights that was politics?
Gooria is uh, he's a basketball guy New.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
York aeron the Avy, last tech machine. Patino can babble
all he wants, He can say all the right things,
but that ill tattoo says it all. And I think
there's a lot of sticky point with everybody. You know, yeah,
we can, we can. You know, you can like you
for what you did here, but you betrayed us. You
went to Lottville and you have a tattoo to prove it.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
Instead of the A at the thirtieth re union, instead
of making him the y, I think he goes to
mid court. Mitch Barnhardt meets him there and says, take
the shirt off, and then we roll out a little
tattoo machine and we touch that. We touched that thing up.
He doesn't have to take it off.
Speaker 7 (22:38):
He's a little old. We don't know how to handle that,
but we can certainly cover it up with something that's right.
Speaker 5 (22:42):
All right, we come back.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
Michael and Malachi Marino will join us. They're in the house,
two basketball superstars from right up the road in Georgetown.
We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
TJ Smith, personal injury attorney called TJ.
Speaker 7 (22:56):
He'll make them pay.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by a starf Mortgage.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
All right, welcome back, Thank you for us Radio live
here at KOs Bar and Grill. Coming out and join
us for lunch this afternoon. We opened at eleven o'clock. Ryan, Drew,
and Shannon here and we've got two special guests joining
us now, the Marino brothers from Georgetown, Michael Marino, who
just finished one of the greatest careers in the history
of EKU basketball, and little brother, little seven foot brother,
Malachi Marino.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
Little another duck through the door on his way in.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
I don't know if that's ever happened, somebody could duck
to the door to come here. I gotta tell a
little story about him.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
First, when we talked to him. Okay, yeah, I've known
him both since they were like little.
Speaker 7 (23:34):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
I did the eighth grade state basketball tournament at KBA
when one Michael Marino was named the MVP of the
state tournament. I was doing the PA for that game,
you mean, and I know that.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
I didn't know until somebody told me later on, but
I remember.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
That, Oh yeah, And I made the comment later, I said,
he's the He's the next big stud to come out
of this area.
Speaker 5 (23:55):
When I saw you an eighth grader.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
Well, people expect or respect your vision on that. Did
you did you see the future for either one of
these at a young age.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
Michael I told him, I said, I said, people said
he's going to be the next big stud to come
out of this area, and of course that he was.
And Malachi, you're the same age as my son. So
my son has played against you for years. Josie Lemon
goes to Frederick Douglass, gotcha. Well, well, so summer ball,
those summer ball tournaments and stuff. So I've seen you
develop probably since you were fifth grade, sixth grade, all
the way to where you are now. So I know
(24:23):
you don't know me, but I know you guys just
from seeing you on the basketball court. But Michael, he
plays at Great Crossing. You're a Scott County guy. How's
he playing at Great Crossing across the street there?
Speaker 11 (24:33):
You know, it was when when coach Chicks left, it
kind of was left up in arms, and he decided
he wanted to take his own route.
Speaker 8 (24:39):
He wanted to make his own name.
Speaker 11 (24:40):
And you know I respected that because as a younger
I'm not a younger brother, but as a younger brother,
I feel it'd be hard to walk into a gym
every day and see a picture of your brother and
you know everything up there to sit and chase like
he can chase and make his own thing. He can
set the standard at a new school, so I think
it was important for him to be.
Speaker 8 (24:54):
Able to do that well.
Speaker 6 (24:55):
To that point, I had this on my list of questions.
I'll get ready to it. You're you're still at Great
Crossing going into your next season. You had opportunities to
really do whatever you wanted, being as highly rated and
sought after you are. Malkaw what went into stick with
a Great Crossing after he just explained how you got
there in the first place, and now you're gonna finish
the job there.
Speaker 12 (25:12):
It was just I just had a long talk with
my family and I mostly talked to my brother, and
we just sat down and we decided that staying home
would probably be best for me because I mean, I'm
one of the top centers in the country, one of
the top players in the country, so and I did
all that at my regular high school. So I mean
I got what I mostly wanted being a high school.
(25:33):
And yes, prep school helps you develop for college, but
I think it's all a mental mindset, Like when I
get to college, I know who I'm going to be
out so.
Speaker 6 (25:41):
Now that i'll see him here, you're ad he's a
Madisonville Maroon. I went to high school with him, and
the many listeners they probably don't care about our Madisonville
Maroon's connection, But how about this guy here. He's probably
been a critical role in getting to you to this
point today.
Speaker 7 (25:54):
Oh yeah, that's my guy. I'll see him every day.
He's pretty good lineman. Back in high school was part
than night trains.
Speaker 4 (26:01):
You've had a heck of a summer. You were over
in Italy playing representing team USA. You got to USA
basketball shirt on. Now, how cool was that for you?
Speaker 7 (26:08):
I mean, it was really cool. Was crazy?
Speaker 12 (26:11):
Is one of the guys that was drafted in the
first round, Nikolatopicch. I played against them in Italy, so
I thought that was pretty cool. And I mean, my
head coach was Jason Terry, so we had it was
a lot of fun and I learned a lot of
new concepts about the game. But I also learned how
they played the game over there, and it shows that
(26:31):
overseas is like on the uprise, Like they played the
game so much more smooth and so much more like
with more pace than it does in the USA.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
You've been shining in these showcase events and just top
one hundred. Earlier this month on three we named you
one of the top overall performers. Had like eighteen games
somewhere around there was there a certain event at a
certain age anywhere where you started noticing, all right, I
can play with anyone, because you're you're doing it now.
But was there a certain maybe a game or someone
you were going against or somewhere you were when you
you had that realization.
Speaker 12 (27:04):
That's tough. I'd probably have to go with. I'd probably
have to go with. My freshman year, we uh we practiced.
Speaker 7 (27:11):
So I played.
Speaker 12 (27:12):
In Indian Elite and the grade before me was Travis
and Flory, right, and I always had to guard Flory
in practice, and with Floria being the number one being
in the country, I like, I took a challenge to
that and I kept them one day without scoring, and
I was like, yeah, maybe I can, Maybe I can
do this, and I can, you know, be the best
center in the country. So that's what I'm on the
way to do now.
Speaker 4 (27:32):
Michael, what what are you? What are you doing now
that your e KU career is over? What's what's next
for you? Where you gonna play.
Speaker 11 (27:37):
Just figuring out Western Europe is the ideal destination. A
few countries over there, I'm I'm in talks with and
you're just kind of figuring that all out. If it's
if it's worth that for me to be able to
go and you know, chase my dream, that'd be great.
But also you know, as a you know, the thing
I've been telling people a lot, and the hardest part
about love is sacrifice. You know, My my my younger
brother was was the whole reason why you know, I
ended up staying in Kentucky for college and everything. So really,
(28:00):
so you know, it's a I didn't really want to
live the most important years of his life up to
day through a phone and through videos and everything else.
Speaker 8 (28:06):
I wanted to be present for that.
Speaker 5 (28:07):
So dude, what a big brother man? How awesome is that?
Speaker 11 (28:10):
So it was important to me to stick around, so,
you know, going into literally the most important year of
his life and the last year of his you know,
his child life, you know, of being a kid, you know,
getting to enjoy experiences and everything. You know, it can
be hard to think about, but ultimately got a way
options and do what's best for you know, yourself. So
I feel like I prepared him enough now and you know,
giving him enough guidance, and he knows he can always
call me where you can grow this to where I am.
(28:32):
But you know it's it's it's up in the air
right now. So just looking ahead and kind of weighing options.
Speaker 6 (28:37):
Are there any certain things like you said you stayed
at home, didn't go far from Scott County at eastern
and you didn't just play there one of the all
time greats will add But is there anything in particular
you've told him throughout the processes. He's kind of going
through the same thing. I'm sure he's feeling lots of
pressure from Kentucky fans around here. Any any guidance you've
been giving him in particular.
Speaker 11 (28:54):
The biggest thing I told him is, man, you got
to go where you're wanting, where you're gonna develop, because
in today's world, you know, people off you a lot.
You know, at at the level he's gonna play, I
didn't experience at that level. Nio wasn't in whenever I
was coming through recruitment. So it's a much different space now.
But understanding, you know, it's still about development. It's still
about where you wanted and where you're gonna be loved
and where you're gonna be you.
Speaker 8 (29:13):
Know, truly pushed to develop because you ultimately want to
achieve a dream, and his dream is to be in
the NBA.
Speaker 6 (29:18):
So you talked about staying here just to just to
be around him. But how was it You're going through
your career and you've got little brother? I mean, flip
it the same way. What was it like? Did he
help you at all? You stay at home and I
know he wasn't quite into his journey as now, but uh,
what was it like just having kid brother around as
you were going through your college career?
Speaker 8 (29:34):
It was great. It was all worth it.
Speaker 11 (29:36):
It would have been worth it regards if you never
panned out, if you never grew, if you know, all
this stuff never had multiplessings, never bestowed upon him, it
STI would have been worth it because he's grown up
into a fine young man and he's been able to
really develop into good human being and that's that's more
important than anything. So having an opportunity to kind of
watch that unfold up close rather than through a phone,
it was much value to me, and and it made
my decision that much better for me. I was at
(29:57):
peace with it at the beginning, but you know I
was I was hoping that, well, maybe he's gonna use
this opportunity. He's he's been able to use me as
a resource and that's been really important to me.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
So you were, Malchai, you were at UK this last week,
got to meet coach Pope, kind of do an unofficial visit,
got your picture with him. You guys reflecting, what did
you what's your takeaway from that?
Speaker 12 (30:16):
It was a great visit, And I mean he's a
big he's a bigger guy, so he knows how to
coach big men. And I think that's one message he
tried to push towards me, just like he knows how
to coach big men in my size and the really
improvement I really developed my game and helped me like
stay in the NBA and like keep up as the
game's going. So that was one of the major pushes
he put like on me. And while I was on
(30:38):
my visit, we.
Speaker 6 (30:39):
Keep hearing about this energy and he's done that flex
photo with a couple of people. We keep hearing everyone
understands the excitement. Can you just kind of translate what
that was like?
Speaker 7 (30:46):
This energy.
Speaker 6 (30:47):
We keep hearing about about how the moment you're with him,
it's just it's let's go. I mean, you all are
all over the place. He's taking in Reperina these days.
It's it seems like just the Pope experience is something
in itself.
Speaker 12 (30:58):
It is it is a little different, Like I've never
had like that kind of I mean, I've been on
a lot of visits, but he just had so much
energy from when you stepped in the doors, when you
walked out the door, so like, and it was just consistent,
and it was it was a it was a new
site for me because I mean when Cal was there
wasn't necessarily that much energy. Like he wasn't like, oh,
(31:18):
let's go, you know, he was like, all right, let's
sit down, let's let's talk.
Speaker 11 (31:22):
But defense though, when you look at Cal has been
season this was hit fourteen, fifteenth year he'd been at Kentucky,
and he's you know, he's been able to put together
a really good product for kids like him, who's really
you know, dream is to achieve, you know, getting the
Nbape Pope is he's fresh, he's he's he's wanting to
get you know, get things rolling, get things started and
rejuvenate life, into the fan base, into the players. So
(31:44):
you know, I think it's two totally separate situations where
they both you know, can benefit different ways.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
Now, the Pope has made no secret about it, you
and Jasper Johnson. He's made kind of priorities, and they're
going after you guys hard. I think the rebea you
two big time recruits out of our backyard. You know,
Jasper lives here, You live out of for Road in Georgetown.
I think they're gonna go put everything they can do
to kind of convince you guys to come to Kentucky.
Speaker 12 (32:07):
Yeah, they just said that they want to keep in
state talent in state and they we I actually had
a talk with with Travis and Trent and they were
just telling me how how much they loved and how
much the BBN loves them, and just, uh, they told
me there's no place like home. So I guess we'll
have to wait and see.
Speaker 6 (32:25):
You just trim your list to eight schools. You don't
have to go through all eight of them right now,
But what are some visits you've already done, or maybe
you have some coming up if you want to name
a few other schools you're considering.
Speaker 12 (32:35):
So of that list, I've visited everywhere except Louisville. I mean,
I haven't been North Carolina either, but I plan to
visit those schools once the summer dies down. And I
mean every visit has its own nice little park. Like
at Notre Dame, they're on the lake, they have the
big cathedral covered in gold, and I thought that was
really cool. They had touched down Jesus, which I thought
(32:57):
was cool. At arc Saw, I mean it swoolpig like.
I have family in Arkansas, so that was pretty cool.
I was able to share that moment with them. And
then just taking my mom with me everywhere, taking my
brother with me to some of these visits. It's just
been a it's been great.
Speaker 7 (33:12):
Being in Georgetown. Though you're surrounded by the blue are you?
Speaker 10 (33:15):
Are you?
Speaker 6 (33:16):
How are you able to kind of set aside the
environment around you and really focus on your decision because
I'm sure you're being pulled one direction.
Speaker 12 (33:22):
Yeah. I sorted to just try to keep it in
house and keep it within my circle, just talking with
my brother, my mom, my dad, just my family members,
and just making the most educated decision, but the best
decision for me.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
Did your dad play football at Georgetown College. He played
basketball basketball at Georgetown College. So he came from He
came from Columbia, South America. He was a two time
National Player of the Year there so, and the rules
in the States is if you played professionally overseas, you
have to come back. Then you have to come to
nai So he went to nai A and played at
Georgetown under Happy Happy I was born and as the
(33:57):
rest is history. So I didn't realize you want a
lot of these visits. And what's your role do you
try to be? Are you strictly big brother or you
like trying to give some advice like okay, do this
ask that you know, see what this coach thinks about this.
Speaker 8 (34:11):
Try to play you know a bit of bowl. I
gotta wear a lot of hats.
Speaker 11 (34:14):
Yeah, where I said, I've been through it, not on
this grand of a scale, but I've been through it.
I understand recruiting and understand you know the vision that
all these coaches want to sell. And on this scale,
in this age, they can put a lot in front
of you, and uh, you know, being able to navigate that,
I feel.
Speaker 8 (34:28):
Like is important. You can't get wooed by it. You
know too early at seventeen.
Speaker 11 (34:31):
If I would have been you know, placed the opportunities
in front of me that he's got, it would have
been totally night and day different, you know. But for him,
you know, it's it's not only it's it's a great
experience to see him in that element and to see
him receive that love and that that that opportunity. But
ultimate at the end of the day, I just tell him, look, man,
you know, it's not about what you think about when
(34:53):
you're on the visits. What you think about when you're
sitting at home, you know, by yourself, and it's men.
Speaker 8 (34:58):
It consumes you. It's something that you know, you know,
it's where you want to be.
Speaker 11 (35:01):
It's not you know, when you're there, they can show
you everything you want to see, tell you everything you
want to hear. When you're at home, what are you
really thinking about? Like what are you really thinking about
when you're in the gym shooting? Like where do where
do I really want to be? And when you pray
about it, you know, what does God tell you want
to be?
Speaker 5 (35:15):
What great advice I want? I want him to be
my big.
Speaker 7 (35:18):
Brother exactly follow me around.
Speaker 5 (35:20):
And give me advice.
Speaker 6 (35:20):
Like that got a good guy leading him around, Malachai.
You're at an age where everyone wants to evaluate you.
Right a scouting report about you, say how good you are,
how good you you're not.
Speaker 7 (35:31):
No one knows you better than you.
Speaker 6 (35:32):
So can you just give us a scouting report on
your game and how you think you play, maybe strengths
and weaknesses. However you want to break it down, but
we want we want to hear it straight from you.
Speaker 12 (35:41):
I'd say, I'm like your natural, like stretch five. I've
improved my shot a lot since I started this process,
and with the way the NBA is going, bigs are
able to handle the ball and shoot the three. So
that's what I've been working on the most. Most of
my strengths will probably be just my back to the
basket play in my passing. I'd say those are my
two strengths and my weak This is which I don't
(36:01):
like to say weaknesses. I'd say things I can get
better at ilya my apologies, it's all good, I'd say.
I'd probably say my physicality or just my my overall shooting.
I'd say that's what mostly needs to be improved on
over the summer and over the next season. So when
I get to college, I'm ready to go.
Speaker 6 (36:18):
And Michael, you probably know him second, his game, second best,
probably been playing him for a long time. You don't
have to give a scattering report. Is there a story
maybe when you were little, maybe recently where you two
were playing ball together. Was there a moment where maybe
he he got you in your realized little brother is
not little brother anymore.
Speaker 11 (36:33):
I'll tell the truth on This is a perfect place
to do it, you know, to make him feel good.
You know, for the most of his life, I've been,
you know, able to you know, just physically dominate.
Speaker 8 (36:43):
I mean, the strength is always going to be there.
I don't I don't.
Speaker 11 (36:45):
I don't see him for a while ever being able
to just truly, you know, man handle me like it's
it's a big brother thing.
Speaker 8 (36:50):
You can't let that happen.
Speaker 11 (36:52):
But uh, you know, as he started to grow, he
passed me up during COVID and uh, we've played one
on one a few times after when I can be
around and yeah, you know, at this point, when I
play him on the primitive, I can get by him.
Speaker 8 (37:05):
I can still you know, create angles. I can use
my size, my strength.
Speaker 11 (37:07):
And but when we get down to the post and
we play one on one with the post entry. You know,
I can sit there and he he can't push me
under the rim or anything. I can hold my spot.
But if he can, if I can let him get
you know, a certain angle, as soon as he shoots,
I just got to put my hand up in hope.
You know, hey, misses like that. And that's kind of
the perspective I have now is like he's he is
better now than I was. And I was really productive
(37:31):
in high school. I was able to oh yeah, I
was able to do you're a star things. But he's
better now than I was, and he will be better
in a year than I ever will be. And I
think that's a testament to not only him being able
to see it happen. I think it almost was the
perfect storm because he was able to see me excel
on a smaller scale and understand, Okay, well, you know,
(37:52):
if I do this properly, I figured out what to do,
what not to do. And now I'm seven feet tall,
so he's got a real chance to understand now, man,
that I can I can take this to a really,
really high level. So but for him, I think he
nailed a scouting report. I think he's on the right track.
I think, you know, translatable skills shooting in today's world, passing,
(38:14):
you know, being able to fit that translates. You know,
there's certain styles that may be better fit for you,
but you know, shooting, passing, and then just defensive versatility.
If he can get out and switch on the guards consistently,
I think that's, you know, that's going to take him
and separate him, because once you get to college at
this level, it's you know, it's little things that separates you,
can't you know, people are very athletic.
Speaker 8 (38:35):
You're never going to be the most athletic guy in
the gym. You're not. I mean, well you might.
Speaker 11 (38:38):
Be the tallest guy in the gym, but uh, you know,
there's only certain things that can truly separate you.
Speaker 8 (38:42):
And there's a lot more little things and big things.
Speaker 6 (38:44):
So the guys that can shoot in pass that sounds
it's a system somewhere nearby.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
Pope would like to have that. Guys like, we can't
thank you enough. I mean, this has really been fun
to kind of have both of you here and kind
of talk about your future. Good luck to you playing overseas.
Michael and good luck to you as you break down
your senior year to take Great Crossing to a state
title this year. So you guys have done, George, the
City of Georgetown proud, the County of Scott County proud.
So your good representatives and good ambassadors for both your community.
(39:09):
So I'm sure they're very proud of you and looking
forward to see what the future brings for both of you.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
Guys. Thank you so much. Then, all right, we'll take
our break, come back. We got a lot more coming up.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
I can take a sports radio, all right, welcome back
to take sports Radio, Ryan, Drew and Shannon. This in
from the Avision Glass text machine from our good friend Casey.
Good morning fellas. This interview with the brothers is amazing.
I love how protective the big brother is. You can
just tell love great radio. You could see that like
(39:37):
Michael takes great pride in being a good big brother
for what Malachi is going through right now.
Speaker 6 (39:42):
Yeah, and he to a certain extent has gone through
it going to Scott County and stand here at Eastern
had a great career.
Speaker 5 (39:48):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (39:48):
We didn't really get to talk about that. I wanted
to ask him about aw Hamilton because they played a
fun brand of basketball. I think I led him led
to him scoring fifteen hundred points. He just told me
off air, he's like kind of sees a little of
that in Pope energy guys, you know, the way they
run their offense. So that was interesting to hear.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
We got a show coming up in September, Shannon, I
believe the new Draft Kings sportsbook and Bowling Green.
Speaker 5 (40:11):
They kind of sent us that noted did you see
did you get that? I saw that?
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to that should be a lot
of fun. We had a great time opening up the
other one. Where was the location? I'm trying to remember
where the mint?
Speaker 5 (40:20):
The mint down by Corman Williamsburg.
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Yeah, yeah, that was a lot of fun. So looking
forward to doing that in Bowling Green in September.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
So Draft Kings for all your sports betty needs. I mean,
you can bet on the Reds to lose now probably
every game, although they do have a really good schedule
coming up. They got a schedule that favors them. They
might actually get back on the winning track. Now you
can bet them on Draft Kings.
Speaker 6 (40:37):
We actually need to talk about how we're gonna parlay
now because I was an NBA guy and it's over. So,
I mean, boys, what do you want you snooker? Baseball?
I mean we got the Euros going on.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Darts maybe, like, uh, you all tell me, Yeah, that's
what we should do, like one baseball game, one darts
and you said snooker on the other, Like, yeah, let's
do like a three game parlay.
Speaker 5 (41:01):
Do you do any golf stuff?
Speaker 7 (41:03):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (41:03):
Yeah, golf parlayser phone. We could definitely do that. We
would have to get that in on a on a
Wednesday or you know, before the tournament starts. Yeah, but
I'm just you know, that's that's what we're gonna run
into coming up.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
We'll get UFC three OZHO three. That's the big thing
they're promoting right now. You bet five dollars where promo
cod ks are? You get one hundred and fifty instantly
in bonus bets.
Speaker 7 (41:19):
Look at that guy there, you go, look that guy.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
That's all I need to do.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
All right, Trimble County is on the clock. Are we
ready to do Trimble County? And we come back after
the commercial ring?
Speaker 12 (41:28):
No?
Speaker 3 (41:28):
Ready?
Speaker 6 (41:29):
Yeah, It's it's not that I didn't do my homework.
I don't have notes. It's just that I wish I
had more substance within my notes. So I'm hoping we
get a call.
Speaker 4 (41:38):
So we need a call from Trible County. The Clark's
public shot phon number eight five nine two O two
two eight seven. Do you think we'll get one?
Speaker 6 (41:44):
We got a little Bedford, little Milton. Yeah, those two Bedford,
those those are the two cities right there.
Speaker 3 (41:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
I mean it's less than an hour away from Louisville,
which is, you know, big city. So I feel like
Trimble County, we'd be already getting a call from there.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
It's not out in the middle of nowhere.
Speaker 7 (41:58):
All right.
Speaker 6 (41:58):
You just named the county seat and how far it
is from Louisville. I'm running out of.
Speaker 7 (42:01):
Notes boys right now.
Speaker 3 (42:05):
Sorry.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
And Drew and I were bartenders here Wednesday night for
the NBA drafts.
Speaker 6 (42:10):
At a lot of fun fun about the draft much. No,
we'll get to the Cayle Philipowski's in the news.
Speaker 5 (42:14):
We gotta definitely get to that news.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
So we'll do a lot of basketball and do Trimble
County when we come back here right here in Kaducky
Sports Radio
Speaker 9 (42:25):
