Speaker 2 (01:21):
So he's opened up the deli here and Drew, he
made us some sandwiches. We ate during the commercial break,
and uh, I really want to eat a little bit more.
I didn't get enough right there.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
Well, I also didn't get enough. I was talking to Billy,
looked up the show started, and I have had zero
bites from Dave's Deli, and I'm considering putting my headset down. Look,
I have a fork right here in my hand and
I haven't had a bite yet, so I might disappear.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Ryan, Shannon and I didn't look any time getting in.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
There was the chicken salad. It looked delicious.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
It was very good. There's a grilled cheese that have
six different kinds of cheese and bacon and bacon on
the grilled cheese.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
Well, you all missed a good conversation with Billy.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Well, we didn't miss it with because we were eating.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
I think we went out on that devil.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
So, you know, we we've been trying to finish up
our list of counties that we started, oh you know,
way back in twenty twenty when COVID hit Matt started
the rundown of the counties. And we're all the way
to our good friends at Wayne County. And before we
get to it, we have our Kentucky branded tweet of
the day.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Oh let's go.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
It's from our friend Corey Price. You may know Corey,
He says. I look forward to John Short calling in
and asking if Lil Wayne is related to Wayne County. Ah,
there you go, he can so. So Shannon, we'll start
with you. What do we know about Wayne County?
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Well, of course we've got Mina Solo, right, And Mina
Solo is home to the Conley Bottom Resort, Ah Love,
which is a place that we have done many shows
throughout the years. Now it burned down just a few
years ago. Have they rebuilt that that we have an update?
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Oh yeah, they've rebuilt it and it's better than ever.
It's still, to me, my favorite place to go to
in the state of Kentucky. And I'm not kidding really,
I think Conley Bottom on Lake Cumberland is my favorite
place to visit in the entire state.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
The memory that I have most of being at Conley
Bottom is the year that you actually stripped down behind
some canvas we held up in front of a live
crowd by the way I did. Yeah, you stripped completely
naked naked and put on your swim trunks and then
jumped into the lake.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah. They had a slide, remember on top of one
of those little house boats there at the dock, and
I went down it.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I was not gonna waste any time, so somebody brought
me some swimsuit. You got held up the curtain, I chained,
dropped drawer, put the swimsuit on and jumped in.
Speaker 6 (03:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
So if you haven't been there before, I would highly
suggest you go there. It's a beautiful part of the state.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
They had you can rent pontoons, you can rent cabins.
It's just yeah, I love it. It's beautiful.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
I believe Bob and Jamestown even had his boat there.
Did he know at that one?
Speaker 2 (03:46):
It's state doc. I know he's been in State doc
in Jamestown.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
OK.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
So yeah, Conny Bottom definitely the highlight of Wayne County
for me, what about you, Drew?
Speaker 5 (03:54):
They call that area the houseboat capital of the world.
Is true, Somerset is Wayne County. In my research last night,
I saw a few Wayne County websites claiming it, saw
some Summerset websites claiming it. Is it more just the
general area is the houseboat capital of the world.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
I think there's quite a battle going on who gets
to claim the title as houseboat capital of the world.
Shannon loves then cities do that anyway.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Yeah, I mean if it can't be proven, then you
don't have a claim like.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Conicelo's claiming it Wayne County and Monticello's claiming it right now.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
I mean they're are Feature County. So I'm giving it
to them. Okay for the next hour, we might revisit it.
And we've alvery done to Pulaski day. I guess so
Wayne County wins out, You're you're the house boat capital
of the world.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
You gotta have, like you got to show me, like
based on number of houseboats, like we can count them
to prove like who has the most house boats, and
then we could call you the houseboat capital of the world. Otherwise,
you can't just show up and go where the house
boat capital with the world. You gotta you gotta have
some numbers to prove it here. You got to back it.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
Up, your big data guy, big show, show your research.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
That's right, that's right.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
I think Monticello they actually make the houseboats. So that's
why they're I think is so they make the most
he make. Okay, all right, so there you go.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
You can back that up with numbers.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
What did you know?
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Wayne County was named in honor of General Anthony Wayne.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
What did General Anthony Wayne do?
Speaker 5 (05:09):
He was a revolutionary Revolutionary War hero, So he just
did lots of heroic things during the war and then
he got his own county.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
How about that, mister Wayne?
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Next, what do you got? Right? Well, what did you.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Bring to the We've got to talk about the Monticello
Pool Hall. That's the cheeseburgers and they're burgers the big takeaway,
I mean not only and I'm going out on limb here.
Conley Bottom, to me is the best place to visit
in the entire state, and the Monoicella Pool Hall has
the best burger in the state. I'm saying it. Wow, Okay,
that's my hot take, huge clan.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
He's sucking up a little bit. Do you have Are
you trying to get a lake weekend before the summer's over?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (05:46):
In that case, I too love Conley Bobam It is
the best place in the world.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
So what makes the burger so good? Is it because
it soaks in the grease that's been there for.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
Fifty years as that it's the flat top griddle. Yes,
you just let it sit there soaking its own stuff.
And I believe they only put ketchup most and salts
on it.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
I think so standard. And they protect the ingredients like
they don't. It's it's a big secret down there. And
the pool hall. Of course there's been cigarette smoke and
burgers all kinds of all marinates and that all marinates
in that, but they protect that. But the ingredients that
menu like it's Fort Knox gold.
Speaker 5 (06:21):
Yeah, and it's the it's my favorite kind of burger,
the smash burger. Get the little gristled real thin. You know,
some people they need the half pound. I don't want that.
I want the greasy sit in its own grease. Give
it the little press and then I'll take that one.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Do you remember it when we went we did our
show there in Monticello, and we walked down to the
pool hall because somebody recommended it. I remember walking anything,
and this is gonna be and I ate like four
of them. Seriously, they were that good because they're not big.
They're kind of like little sliders almost.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
They catered obw Right Shannon.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Yes, I think they did, as a matter of fact,
they yes, yeah, So.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
When when they did a show down there at the Lake,
I believe they brought them over.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Now, one of the most famous Polytitians from our state
is from Wayne County, how Rogers.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
I mean, if you say Mitch McConnell's number one, how
Rodgers might be number two living politicians in our state.
He's as famous as anybody.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
Got his own road out there.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
God, he's own road for crying out loud, the how
Rogers parkways. So he's very famous. But there are two
controversies we got to talk about involving athletes.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Oh we're going to athletes, now, go ahead, go ahead.
What I was gonna say, did you realize that Wayne
County gave us the song Man of Constant Sorrow featured
in The brother where Art, though not knowing that. Well,
because Dick Burnett is from Wayne County. He was a
fiddle player who wrote the song No Sorrow in the
early nineteen hundreds.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
Really, if I may my fork here, supposed, can I
use this fork to proclaim that the whiskey thief song
of the day, even though we're not playing it, can
we make man of constant sorrow?
Speaker 7 (07:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Well that works, okay, Man, if you can find it,
that'll be a song we got to play before the
hours overcut like that, our whiskey thief song of the day.
All right, here's our two controversies, and we have to
settle him right now, all right. Kenny Davis was born
and went to Wayne County High School, went to Georgetown College.
Was the captain of the nineteen seventy two United States
(08:11):
Olympic basketball team that got hosed over in Munich. Remember
that that the gold medal. They put more time on
the clock, and he basically as captain, decided, we are
not accepting our silver medal. And even I think in
his will it says not anybody in my family will
ever accept a silver medal on that team. Well, he
(08:31):
now lives since he retired in Garrett County, so like
Wayne County tries to claim him, and Garrett County tries
to claim h because he's lived there for many, many,
many years, who gets to claim Kenny.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Davis went out split him in two?
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Well, it might be a little difficult.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Well, I mean everybody gets to claim Abraham Lincoln, so
I can't two different places claim him.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Now you make a great argument. Yeah, half of Kentucky
claims that Abraham Lincoln lived there, born there.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
So I think he's gonna be in Wayne County in
my history book. You said that's where he's from, It's
where he played, he played high school ball. For me,
it's Wayne County.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
You will always forever be from Madisonville.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Yes, I've been in Lexton. It's almost half and half.
I'm a few years away from split my life in
both places. At the end it will be a lot
more Lexington, but Madisonville will always be home.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
I think we gotta call him Wayne County, and I
think he is a Wayne County.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
I'm sorry Garrett County. But if you remember, we did
a show at that bank in Garrett County and they're like,
oh no, Kenny Davis is from here, and it started
quite the conference and I believe there's still a little
bad blood going on down there about well, who gets
to claim Kenny days are You can't just.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
Claim other people's athletes. This isn't Arkansas basketball. I mean,
we've got to have some quorum around here.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Well, he's one of the greatest ever played at Georgetown
College and he's still alive. So Kenny Davis, we're given
Wayne County. We're giving you, Kenny Davis. Here's the other controversy.
We talked about it on this show. When it happened.
Rodney Woods had been the Wayne County basketball coach for
years and years, like third years, and a new superintendent
came in and let him go.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
This is the controversy we were we were kind of
figuring out when that was around, right.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Yeah, one call in, Yes, somebody called in and told
us about it.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
So some bad blood between the two. Is that what
started this?
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Or what?
Speaker 7 (10:15):
What?
Speaker 4 (10:15):
What's the problem?
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Something about that the new superintendent's wife didn't get a
job one time and they thought.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Those feelings for all those years.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Huh and then said, ah, I'll get even someday.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Superintendent in town, you're out of here.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Yeah, so uh yeah, that's still going on now. And
you had there's one more athlete tie in.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Yeah, I have a famous athlete. If anyone is out
at the ISCO Championship today watching Josh Cheeter uh play
a little PGA Tour golf, just know he is not
the best athlete in his own household.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Because wait a minute, he's a professional golfer.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
I don't care. He's a good golfer. I love Josh Teeter,
but his wife Ashley Bell Teeter formerly Ashley Bell from
Monticello and played basssketball at Georgetown College. So as Josh,
this week's about Josh. Really, he's in Kentucky with the PGA,
he'll have the biggest crowd out there can't trace. But
on Wayne Cannan County Day, we're gonna focus on miss
Ashley belt Eater. His his his wife who had a
(11:13):
great basketball career. So she was an all star athlete
in her own from Wayne County, from Wayne County, and
we're putting her in our Wayne County Hall of Fame,
and we hope on Sunday, Uh, she has a new
trophy in her house that Josh brings home.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
I did skip over one other thing I want to
talk about in Wayne County in Monticello. There's a log
cabin in downtown mana Cello, just this log cabin. It
was relocated into downtown. The reason, the only reason I'm
bringing up. I know nothing about this log cabin except
they said it was built by a guy whose name
was Raccoon John Smith.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Oh, I bet that was the best built cabin that
ever existed.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Anybody who's name Rack? Can you trust anybody named Rack?
Speaker 8 (11:51):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah, that's like a that's a good person, right, Yeah.
Like they go out and pull weeds with their hand,
they're not using the grandpa's.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
This is what the conversation we had yesterday, Michael Jordan,
Michael B. Jordan had to add the b this guy.
They went up like, dude, there's some pretty famous John
Smith's right now. And he's like, you know what, I'm raccoon,
Raccoon John Smith.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
I'm Raccoon Smith. Raccoons are like shifty little thieves though
they were, they're even the little mask.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
And trash often.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Amen, all you tarted to disparage the good name of
Raccoon John Smith. I'm saying that's probably a good man there.
He built a log cabin, built.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
A log cabin that you built that still stands today exactly,
So salute to raccoon and Smith.
Speaker 5 (12:32):
If you were wanting to buy a cabin in our
house today, is there anything anything on our checklist? Or
we're good? Just I'm just trying to walk you into.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
I think we've cleared all of mark Okay.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
I was just I didn't know if you were looking
to buy a log cabin these days. No, No, I
just thought I was gonna help you out there on.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
The reason I wanted to mention it because of the
dude's name was Raccoon John Smith.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
And he earned his shout out many years later on
K S R.
Speaker 4 (12:53):
And how long has that been built?
Speaker 2 (12:55):
It is a long time.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
I mean like termites could have eaten that thing up,
but nobody noticed a raccoon Smith.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Raccoon Smith, you went your caving built the right way.
You contact Raccoon John Smith eight five two to eighty seven.
So so that wraps up Wayne County.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
That means that.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Who's who's next?
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Raccoon John Smith died in Mexico history.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Really, we've got Whitley County. Is Whitley County next?
Speaker 5 (13:22):
I should be Whitley.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
We got Webster, Webster, Whitley Wolf and Woodford. Those are
our last has that raccoon John Smith right there?
Speaker 6 (13:34):
It is.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
You're a handsome young man.
Speaker 5 (13:35):
Oh excuse me. He died in Mexico, Missouri. A little different,
A little different, A little different, a little different.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Did he build a log cabin there too?
Speaker 5 (13:43):
I don't know, but good good man, right bet raccoon
John Smith.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Now, we do want to give a little word of
caution to our friends in Wayne County. We just went
through you. We highlighted you on KSR. You guys highlighted
Union County last week, and then they had tornadoes last week.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
Right, bad ones.
Speaker 6 (13:59):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
We keep saying it, and it's just looking more and
more like it's the case. But on my side of
the state is kind of becoming a heavy tornado area,
and it is. We've had some serious damage, unfortunately, some
fatalities over the years. But Morganfield, uh had a pretty
big one.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
I didn't see anything, you know, severe damage or anything
too bad, but it was a gigantic tornado. It looked
like on the video. People were tweet out, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Dawson Springs has been hit twice in the last couple
of years, and of course on the Mayfield in that
whole area. Yeah, down there. So uh so, just heads
up Wayne County.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
I did. I didn't think of one more Wayne County
thing a little lighter than the severity of tornadoes or
raccoon John Smith, right, especially him who died in Mexico, Missouri.
Uh the Wayne County if I'm not mistaken. Cardinals, Yes, Okay,
they're the high school that I always see where it
looks too much like Louisville because I think their cardinal
logo is pretty similar.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
It's red.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
And you get down there to house Boat Country and
you think you're gonna be around BBN and you see
them walking around, and it just throws me off a
little bit. So Wayne County. I know it's too late
to change your colors and your mascot, but you're just
a little too too Louisville at first glance.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Sometimes you've opened up a door of a question. You
want to add something for like, no, just talking about
Raccoon Smith. Raccoon Smith. Do we know how he got
his name? I'm very curious.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Well, it reportedly resulted from him saying he lived in
such a remote location that his only neighbors were raccoons.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Thus raccoon Smith, Raccoon Smith. You go about that, uh
you mentioned about the Wayne County Cardinals. It seems to
me like out of all the high schools in Kentucky,
there seems to be more Cardinals than any other nickname.
I don't know if this is true. Probably Corey Price,
somebody could look it up. Scott County Cardinals, GRC Cardinals,
(15:47):
South Laurel Cardinals, Wayne County Cardinals. It seems like there's
a lot of Cardinals. I don't think that should be
the fact.
Speaker 5 (15:52):
Well, there's a simple answer for this run.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Okay, do you know what our state bird is, the cardinal?
Speaker 5 (15:56):
It probably has a little little I'm not saying I
agree with this behavior. That wouldn't even be our state
bird up to me, but that's probably why.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Well, the bigger problem is we need to change the
state bird.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
That's true. Ye make it into a spatsy or something.
See made sure, Robin, there's a lot of those. One
more thing about Raccoon. He was Look, this guy built
log cabins, but.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
He was largely self educated, with no more than six
months of formal schooling. Really he had six months of school.
The guy could build a log cabin that lasted two
hundred years how about that? And him and Abe Lincoln
lived everywhere in the States somewhere probably some of that.
So listen, keep us up on the Raccoon John Smith
facts for the rest of the show. Okay, eight five
nine two two two eight seven, Ryan, Drew and Shannon
(16:38):
and Mario is going to join us. We come back
here on Kentucky's Ports Radio. So you're telling me the
guy that wrote this song is from Wayne County, That's
what I'm telling you. Wow, Yep, Dick Burnett. Dick Burnett.
He was a fiddle player.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Did he used to hang out with Raccoon Smith? No,
he was.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
Partially blind, he was. Yes.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
The more the more we get into these counties, the
more fascinating stories you hear. That's that's why I really
like doing it. Eight five nine two a two to
eight seven. Now Todd's been holding for like an hour
to talk about Todd?
Speaker 4 (17:10):
Did he really?
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Todd, if you call back, we'll get you on.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
I was thinking about Todd while we were lapping.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
I knew Todd, if you call back, we'll get you on.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
In an hour, we need a caller from Wayne County,
and Todd was our caller. And then we talked too
much and didn't get him money, So calls back uh
Todd eight five nine two two two eight seven Super
Mario joins us. Now we've got a good crowd coming
in here from lunch nowadays, DELI, did you try any
of that?
Speaker 8 (17:33):
Yes, I did mac and cheese. I didn't get a
chance to try the other stuff, but the mac and
cheese is pretty good.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
I want to get Mario on because he went to
his first big league baseball game the other night.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
Did they actually win?
Speaker 2 (17:45):
They did win? Wow? Well, what a shock that was.
Speaker 5 (17:49):
They don't win?
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Huh? And I believe it was against the Rockies, who
are They're equally as horrible. So you saw a great game.
Great game, Uncle Matt gave you the tickets and got
to sit there and great seats.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Great seats and wonderful seats.
Speaker 8 (18:02):
The crazy thing about the game, there was a storm
coming in, so they had to shut it down, I guess.
And you know they bring out the mat and cover
up the the play the fields. Yeah, basically you can
see the rain just coming in coming in and then
everybody jumping out their seats and then they ran under
the tunnel. So you know, it was a great experience.
The thing that I liked about it the most, I
would say is the fireworks. They pop off the fireworks
(18:24):
as soon as someone hits a home run, So that's
very cool. And I think KPP should definitely get that.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
You're there for some of the el mania. He's had
quite a week. Ellie de la Cruz crowd, they love him,
but yeah, he's He's wonderful.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
That's an awesome park to go to, and those are
really good seats. I have one gripe about Great American Ballpark.
When you go into the concession stand area, you go
through and it's all self served, Yes, like they got
all the food there. You pick up whatever you want.
But then you go and you rent yourself up and
then they ask you for a tip. They want you
to tip after you get your own food and then
rent yourself up. They say, tip, tip, tip.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
For what I did all the work. You're not tipping them?
Speaker 4 (19:03):
Hush am I crazy?
Speaker 5 (19:04):
Did you get to keep the tip?
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Yes, you bought a hot dog or something that they
prepared for you, tipping the cook. Tipping the cook?
Speaker 4 (19:11):
What about that beer that I just grabbed out of
the cooler myself? I gotta tip them for that too.
I think you should.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Okay, it's Mario. Did anyone play the match game while
you were there? It's like put something on a screen.
Everyone's really bad at it. No one's ever gotten an answer, right,
just wondering.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
It's only one person is bad at it, and he's
sitting at this table.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
No, it's a really challenge. You're bad at I think
most people. Yeah, what is this match game? When they
take someone out of the crowd and embarrass them in
front of thousands of people and it haunts them for
the rest of their life. It happens in every game.
I thought you would have seen it. Maybe they stopped
doing it after I was the last one.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
Did you delete that from the internet? I think we
could find it.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
I went out there. I actually watched a lot to
make fun of myself.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Eight nine two h two two weeks.
Speaker 6 (19:49):
We do.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
You have some callers, but Todd, if you're listening, call
back will get you on. So who we got Matt
to Let's go tell us to Wayne County.
Speaker 9 (19:57):
Come on, Todd, thank you for writing to me to
speak on Wayne County. Wayne County is the heart of
Lake Cumberland, which is why their tourism side is a
heart of lakecermerlind dot com.
Speaker 7 (20:11):
Not only do we have the city Pool Hall.
Speaker 9 (20:13):
In Commley Bottom, we've also got Beaver Creek, Marina, Mill,
Springs Mill, Montsilla Country Club, nine hole golf course.
Speaker 7 (20:22):
In the middle of the city.
Speaker 9 (20:23):
And you've also got many many campgrounds. So if you're
a camper, look check it out. All kinds of campgrounds
to go to in Wayne County. Musicians from Wayne County,
you've got Kevin Denny.
Speaker 10 (20:35):
Who had hits.
Speaker 9 (20:37):
Years ago, and the current home of LV Shane, who
had the number one hit country hit a couple of
years ago.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Called My Boy, My Boy by LB Shane. All right, Matt,
try to find out them. We'll try to play that
one too for the show's over. My Boy by LB Shane.
All right? What else you got, Todd?
Speaker 9 (20:53):
Also, it's the home of two National Championship slow pitch
softball teams. They were a professional softball team based out
of Mona, Sola called Star Pass. A couple of the
players included, which you already mentioned, Hall of Fame coach
Rodney Woods. He played on the team, and another guy
that you're all familiar with played on the team, the
(21:14):
Cincinnati Reds. Golden Glove winner, Doug Flynn.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Doug Flynn, Holly Dang all right, well, Todd, we appreciate it.
I'm glad we got you on some good stuff from
Wayne County, so we appreciate you calling in for us today.
So Doug Flynn, though Wayne Kny didn't claim Doug Flynn,
we Fayette County claims Doug.
Speaker 5 (21:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
It sounds like we have another controversy.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
No, he's definitely Fayette County.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Corey Price in to say mana Hall mona solo pool hall,
not Manta Hall. News story from many, many years ago
when they were sixty five cents. They had sold millions
back then. Just doesn't have a date on the actual article,
but it looks very old.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
If you're going down to Lake Cumberland or Conley Bottom
or these other marinas, it's worth your time to go
by the Monticello City pool Hall just to get a hamburger,
a cheeseburger. It's worth it, I promise you, all right, Matt,
who's next Bob and Jamestown Bob? You can vouch for
Conley Bob in the beautiful area Monticello.
Speaker 11 (22:07):
Right.
Speaker 10 (22:08):
Oh yeah, there's three swinging bridges in Wayne County. It's
a great place to go for wheeling. You got a
lot of good trails down there in the South Fork. Anyway,
I want you know we live in Kentucky. A lot
of us take it for granted. Kentucky is a wonderful state.
And they're having an event that's coming up start Saturday,
(22:31):
runs all week in Campbellsville. It's called Jets over Kentucky. Fellas,
I'm telling you what if you've ever seen its remote
and crawl, these are actual flying jets. Okay, some of
them are fifteen twenty feet long. There's one of them
in SR seventy one Blackbird replica. It's about eighteen feet long.
Speaker 5 (22:53):
Cost a quarter of a million dollars.
Speaker 12 (22:55):
These crazy talk, Yeah yeah, come over there at the
okay Tambosvelt Airport. All right, bring us an easy app
some shade, a cool okay, all right, okay, starting Saturday.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
All right, thank you, Cole Bob. We appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
We're right back.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (23:15):
TJ. Smith, personal injury attorney called TJ.
Speaker 4 (23:18):
He'll make them pay. Welcome back to Kentucky Sports Radio,
presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
All right, welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio, Ryan, Drew, Shannon,
and Mario and yesterday Tom Hart hosted another great show,
but he talked about maybe coming to Kentucky to buy
a car. Drew, can you help him?
Speaker 5 (23:34):
Yeah, we were trying to tell Tom that he needs
to hit the road with Don Franklin. He can call
them today for their special travel tune up, including an
AC system test for only seventy nine ninety five. They
also have the largest inventory of new, used and certified
pre owned vehicles in the state, with over five thousand vehicles. Ryan,
surely Tom can find one out of five thousand. They
have twenty seven dealerships across the Bluegrass and Don Franklin's
(23:54):
family is there to serve all your needs. Don Franklin
has a huge selection of twenty twenty four models with Chevy, Buick, Gmcnay, Nissan,
christ Or DOS, Jpram, Fiatkia. It's a Bushi, Ford, Lincoln, Genesis, Cadillac,
now Toyota. Steer your way over to Don Franklin Auto
dot Com. Don Franklin Auto driven by Family.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
On the a Vision Glass text machine. How could you
guys not mention mill Springs that has the largest overshot
water wheel in the world in Wayne County is now
part of the National Park System. So again we're claiming
the biggest in the world. A water wheel, largest overshot
water wheel in the world is in Wayne County.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
What is a water wheel wheel?
Speaker 11 (24:33):
You know?
Speaker 5 (24:33):
The turns and carries the water.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Up, the water comes out, it spins the.
Speaker 4 (24:39):
Get that.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Yeah, you know, I've seen one.
Speaker 5 (24:41):
Mind, we we did get it. Todd got it. We
didn't want to take all of Todd's information. Todd was
part of this experiment.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
And Corey Price has found the most popular nicknames of
high schools in Kentucky. Cardinals is not it? Cardinals is
like fifth. What do you you guys think is the
number one nickname of high schools in Kentucky.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
I saw coss, I have not seen it.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
I'll say bears.
Speaker 2 (25:09):
No, bears is not on the top list here top fifteen.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
I guess wildcats.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
Wildcats is tied for second with fifteen. So what's the answer, then,
I want you to guess.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
It?
Speaker 5 (25:22):
Flies?
Speaker 2 (25:24):
Eagles, Yes, Eagles is number one. There are two golden Eagles,
but eagles have Seventeen schools have the name nick named.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
Eagles, including one North.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
Bullet they're the Eagles because bullet we used to bullet East.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
We used to beat down the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
You and I are both Chargers from high school. I'm
Central Chargers. Oh I didn't realize that. Yeah, you're a
bullet each charge. Okay, tied with Wildcats for number two.
Panthers okay, panthers, yeah, Pickville Painters, and then twelve tigers.
There's one fighting tiger, eleven bulldogs and then finally ten Cardinals.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
How far down the list is maroons.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
I'm pretty sure maroons is one and one only the
Madisonville Maroons. I don't know any other Maroons ever.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
And then I feel like, you know, you gotta have
or you should have the animal in your state if
you're going to name it after that. Any lions in
Kentucky that I'm aware, maybe mountain lions, but not lions
just running around.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Or panthers are there? Not Loddy panthers in Kentucky?
Speaker 7 (26:24):
Are there?
Speaker 4 (26:25):
I don't think sots pirates Kentucky?
Speaker 2 (26:29):
But then your schools like the yellow jackets. Everybody's got
there's yellow jackets everywhere. It should be more popular than
it is. All right. This is from the A Vision
Glass text machine from my friend Bobby King. That song
about my boy is about adopting. You're gonna choke up.
Be prepared, brother, heartstrings. Matt, have you have you been
able to find it? Matt? The song my Boy? Okay,
(26:57):
you're still looking forward. I can't remember the author's name,
but we have many callers. Matt, go ahead, Who is it?
Speaker 7 (27:06):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (27:06):
Plaski County Maroons.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
I was gonna add that, but I kind of liked
you saying we were doing one.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
Yeah, somebody just texted it on the avy As Glass
text machine. Glast all right, who do you say it was?
Speaker 7 (27:15):
Matt?
Speaker 4 (27:17):
Andy? Go ahead?
Speaker 5 (27:18):
Andy?
Speaker 6 (27:19):
Hey, guys, Hey, I'm going to back you up on
the Mono Cellar pool Hall Burger. I've only been in
there one.
Speaker 13 (27:25):
Time, but I have to say, and not even joking,
this is best.
Speaker 6 (27:29):
Burger I've ever ate in my life.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
M hm, I'm with you. I think it is the
number one burger in the state. Is the pool Hall Burger.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
It is Burger Lexington Burger week two.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Oh yes, it is. What else you got, Andy?
Speaker 6 (27:44):
And I want to get back what you was talking
about the other day. A couple of examples, uh, talking
about what makes you feel old when you go into
restaurant and order a drink and they say I'll be
back when you drinking, Like, aren't you forgetting to do
something and they don't don't even know idea you Oh yeah,
I asked him one time and they're like, we only
we only uh any people that looks forty and younger.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
I'm like, yeah, I've kind of hit that point too.
Speaker 11 (28:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
Well, you go buy a beer and they don't even
card you anymore. Like for the longest time, you know,
when I was probably my thirties, they were still carding me.
I was like, ah, yeah, I still got it. Then
you turn forty and they don't even think twice about
the Yeah here.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Is that the rule of thumb forty you have to
be look younger than forty forty you get card.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
I think that's yeah for most places. I think so
if you're if you look forty or younger, they're going
to card you.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
I was in line to buy This has been about
a year. I was at Rough for a concert. I
went to buy a beer from you got the beer standing.
I had my ID ready. He's like, I don't need that,
I see your coconut. I was like, my coconut, and
then he pointed at my goateee with the white hair.
He's like, you got coconut and your beard, You're good.
And I'm like, now SEC tournament going to Bars on Broadway.
They just point at my beard. ID stays in the wall.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
Should have been dying at white when you were.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
No kidding, eight kids, if you're a hold fake, throw
some white hair in your beard. You're in business.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
Eight five nine two a oh two two eight seven.
That's our car pumping shop phone number. Who you got next, Matt,
free bird? Go ahead, free bird. We got all star
callers today. Go ahead, free bird man.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
I can vouch.
Speaker 14 (29:13):
I'm driving through Wayne County as we speak, and uh,
it's either an Amish or a Mennonite owned little markets
called grub Hub. Dude, they're Dailly sandwiches them making three
inches thick with your lettuce, tomatoes and everything on there.
And I believe Kenny Davis he played ball in at
(29:34):
Georgetown with one of my vice prais and seas the
only in a I eight player ever to be on
the Olympic team.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
And shout.
Speaker 7 (29:43):
Jameson and S.
Speaker 14 (29:45):
Hutchinson from Wayne County.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Appreciate free bird kind of broke up there a little
bit and when be sure he you who? He said,
there's some many named Hutchinson. I think it's what he said,
so not sure. Two ah two two eight seven. Mister
grow hub Uh. This is on the Avision Glass text machine.
I I've seen a lot of cougars in the great
state of Kentucky. Well, Bullet Central's the cougars, are they? Yeah,
I don't think that's the cougars that the text is
talking about, but get your joke.
Speaker 4 (30:10):
But uh, yeah, there are. There are quite a few
schools in Kentucky named after the cougars.
Speaker 5 (30:15):
Hey, Cory, you know how many cougars in Kentucky?
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Well he could and this listen. Todd sent us a
nice text message. Todd said, thank you so much for
having me on talking about Wayne County. Thank you so
much for always talking good about Wayne County. We appreciate
people like you, guys. Wayne County is one of those
counties that's stuck down there on the Tennessee border that
they are not really in the Lexington media market. They're
not really in the Louisville media market. They kind of
get lost down there.
Speaker 5 (30:37):
And I'm gonna use the opportunity to think Todd and
other callers who sometimes wait a long time on mornings
because we either get lost or forget to go to him,
and we left Todd hanging there. So glad I finally
got him on and got them to participate.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
The nasty SEC Conference tournament at the end of the year.
This tournament cost Kentucky the NCAA tournament. Well, they still
got in the NCAA tournament. They just lost it. They
just lost it first round game against Oakland. Even though
they got beat in the SEC tournament. I think most
people thought Kentucky was still gonna make a big run
in the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
It just didn't happen.
Speaker 5 (31:07):
While we're talking about NCAA tournament losses, did you see
what Armando Bigcott said yesterday?
Speaker 4 (31:12):
Yeah? Oh yes, yes, yeah.
Speaker 5 (31:13):
He was like talking about how they played Saint Peter's
and what the Elite eight I believe seen sixteen maybe
regardless they won by a million. He was just wide
openly saying, I don't know how teams lost to Saint Peter's.
They're the worst team we played all year. They were
so easy to beat. And just watching him say that
on my phone made me furious. He even said, I
don't know how Kentucky lost.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
That's what he said, I don't know how Kentucky lost
to that.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Do you rarely hear a player talk about another team
or something like that, So for him to sit there,
he was laughing at how bad Saint Peter's was. He's like,
I don't understand how many we lose this team? He said,
I had twenty and twenty and they ran him out
of The Gill Show. There are a lot of teams
thinking that about Oakland.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Well, this past season when Jack Golki was on this
show with the part of my take, part of my
Takeja from Oakland, Jack from Oakland, What I say, Jack Golkie,
Jack Golki, he called in his from Jack from Oakland. Yeah,
he basically said, I don't I don't know what they
were doing, you know, like, how did they not do
to make a change to try to stop me?
Speaker 4 (32:07):
He said that Cali Perry was the only one that
didn't realize he was hot. Also realized it.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
It was I said this the next day on the show,
even though I wanted to punch my radio when he
was talking about I don't understand why Kentucky keV let
me shoot threes. In some ways, it was a little
therapeutic for a closure to hear him say that.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
I'm the same way. It felt good to know that, Hey,
it wasn't really Kentucky players. It was like the coaching
staff didn't make any adjustments. And now that coaching staff's
gone and.
Speaker 5 (32:37):
The fans we've said it forever or not forever, but
we've talked about that loss. We've had millions of conversations
all summer about it. But for someone that played in
the game to say the one who hit all the shots, yes, neck.
As much as it sucked to hear him say, it
helped me close the book a little bit.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
I'm kind of with you on that.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
It did.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Kind of was kind of therapeutic to hear him, and
I hope I.
Speaker 5 (32:54):
Never hear from him or see him again.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
You know what else is therapeutic? Moonshine. Really, I'm back
to paying their beauty. It's right, you can't have bourbon
without moonshine. So check out the Moonshine trail, follow me
on Twitter and get their moonshine. Get your shine on giveaway.
I've got a twenty five dollars Amazon gift card that

of the locations on the Moonshine Trail that I tweet out.

Trail dot com.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
Come on out and see us. We've got one more
segment here at Dave's Delhi. We're on Georgetown Road, ten
forty five Georgetown Road. They've got the deli counter is
open and ready to take your orders, and it is
very very good. Don't I've passed by this place two, three,
four times a day. Now they got to Delhi. Here,
I know where my lunch spot is. Look my favorite
waffle house. You can see it.
Speaker 5 (34:03):
I got here famous waffle that's the.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Famous waffle house right there. I go there for breakfast,
come here for lunch. I'm set right back. This is
Kentucky's Sports Radio. I know this song when it first
came out. My mom sent it to me because she
knew it would make me tear up and cry. So
this is a very popular song. I didn't realize that's
the one we're talking about by L V. Shane Payton.
It's a little controversy though, a lot of people are
saying he's from Caneville in Grayson County, not Wayne County.
(34:31):
So is he one of these guys that was born
in Grayson County but now lives in Wayne County Maybe
something like that.
Speaker 4 (34:35):
I don't know. So it depends. Like where where do
you say you're from? Like where you were born, where
you grew up, where you live now? Like what defines
where you're from?
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Good question, Well you're you can answer that you you
lived in two cities since you moved to lext To
Where are you from?
Speaker 8 (34:49):
I say both I say New York and then Florida.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
It just depends. But if you gotta pick one, like
if I had to pick up professional town, you're a
professional athlete, we gotta put your hometown. We can't put
New York Florida. So which one do we put?
Speaker 9 (35:01):
It?
Speaker 5 (35:02):
Probably put Florida. Okay, I went to high school in Florida.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
I think that's a lot of Where did you go
to school?
Speaker 4 (35:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (35:07):
Yeah, Like I'm always gonna be from Hotwell, Indiana. You're
gonna be from Bullock County, Bullock County, Mount Washington, Washington, Tucky.
You're Madisonville always.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
So now it's framed like when they say where are
you from? Well, I'm not from Lexington. I originated in Madisonville. Yeah,
someone says where you raised? You know, it's kind of varies.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
We're at Dave's Deli here at ten forty five Georgetown Road.
Dave Carroll has opened up a deli counter here on
Georgetown Road. Of course, Dave Carroll's been a big friend
for KSR for many many years through rich State Barbecue.
The barbecue place is just down the road here on
Georgetown Road. They've got awesome, awesome brisket ribs. The corn
pudding I think is the best in the world.
Speaker 5 (35:45):
I'm a sight it theem guy. Oh, I mean it's
not good, but a lot of good.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
So maybe you come here to Dave's Deli for lunch
and then you drive down the road to rich State
Barbecue for dinner.
Speaker 5 (35:54):
Wha way else for breakfast? House for breakfast right there,
mister Georgetown road over here.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
So we really appreciate Dave Carroll and State Barbecue. Red
Phoenix is the name of the company. They being on
one of ours longtime sponsors, and we appreciate him having
us out here today as he's opening Dave's Delhi just
opened the doors like three weeks ago. You can walk
in order your deli sandwich. You can order it on
door dash. Uh but uh really, this is something I
think this side of town needed and I'm looking forward
to coming over here a lot.
Speaker 5 (36:17):
I want to officially put the Drew Franklin Stamp of
approval on the meat ball sub sandwich now only got
to eat during the break That's a good meatball sandwich.
Speaker 4 (36:24):
Nice And that girl cheese sandwich with bacon is unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Two two eighty seven. Who's our callers? Matt, Donnie, go ahead, Donnie.
Speaker 7 (36:35):
Hey, uh, we got a couple phenomenon down here for
Wayne Canty.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
You know who worse so far and down here on
the border.
Speaker 6 (36:42):
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
Have you not ever noticed.
Speaker 9 (36:46):
Drying how all the trees down here in Wayne Canny
leaning towards the soileth?
Speaker 7 (36:51):
Why?
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Why do they lean towards the south?
Speaker 4 (36:53):
Because Tennessee booos.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
There's our call today, very much, our don Franklin call
the day. We appreciate you calling in a little Wayne
County humor down there. So who's next, Matt, Spooky Fox
is up next? Go ahead, Spooky Fox.
Speaker 4 (37:10):
Hey, how you guys doing today? How you doing all right?
Speaker 5 (37:14):
Pretty good?
Speaker 11 (37:14):
Pretty good.
Speaker 13 (37:15):
I've got to say, with the controversy of where you're
from and where you've moved to and what that means,
who claims you, I wasn't gonna talk about something else,
but I've got to talk about that. I moved up
here to Wayne County in two thousand and three as
a kid, and I've got to say this is the
best area of Kentucky. I travel over the state playing music,
and you will not find nicer people. You will not
(37:37):
find more welcome in people than in Wayne County. And
no matter how long I live, I will always say
I'm from wine Canty. I'm originally Florida. But I don't
like to tell people for obvious reasons, especially in their
basketball program.
Speaker 5 (37:47):
But yeah, I will.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
All I live, I will tell people from Wayne County.
So that's my thought on it. Appreciate it, all right,
thank you very much. Appreciate your phone call. Yeah, you know,
there's aws Borough football legend has just walked in. Charles
Grunt caked into the Delhi counter. Look at that baseball basketball.
I thought you were mainly a football guy.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
You are.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
Talented bull timull Tye, talented from Owensboro High School.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
That's right. H eight five nine two two eighty seven.
Who you got next, Matt, Josh, go ahead, Josh.
Speaker 7 (38:19):
All right. So there's a museum in Wayne County to
honor their local culture. Part of the reason that museum
started there was a guy from Wayne County named Wyatt Atkinson,
and he was a gun builder.
Speaker 8 (38:31):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (38:31):
The cool part about that is he lived two miles
off of a grappl road. You'd have to walk through
the woods to get to his house. And he built
all these guns with no machinery, no electricity, nothing, just
all hand tools. And eventually he was found by Sergeant
York of military fame, and he challenged Sergeant York to
(38:52):
a shooting contest and ended up beating him by blowing
out the bullseye. He is also featured in the Milwaukee
Public Museum Shout out to Wyatt Atkinson, who is my
grandfather's grandfather.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
There, you go appreciate it very much. I love these
obscure facts that when we do these county That's why
I enjoy it, this little project we're doing.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
Yeah, that's why we always ask for callers who live there,
because sure we can get on the internet and tell
you the population in the restaurant and who won the
state championship, but we don't get all this stuff. I mean,
you gotta live there and know it to to give
us this info.

in our future. I hope we'll get you out there.

No, nobody bound a little bit of pressure off of
you when you have somebody throwing with you.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Yeah, I feel like that's true.
Speaker 4 (41:50):
Then it really was, because then you know, I guess
