(00:57):
I've got Ryan and Drew Shannon's Louisville. I can't believe
I remembered all that after three months to get that
little intro. Great crowd of people here for my first
show back.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Thank you very much, and Ryan, wonderful to see you.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Welcome back, brother, I mean really and welcome back. I'm
so happy, excited to I haven't asked you questions I
want to ask you yet because I wanted to save
it for the show. But we're really happy you had
this opportunity experience of a lifetime.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
Man, it was awesome, and I want to thank well.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
I want to thank you and uh and Drew and
Shannon and Mario and Billy and everybody for making it
to where I could go. I heard you held down
the Fort very well. I know everybody I guess now
loves Black Jones with Myron.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Oh yeah, it was a big hit.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
It was a part and then the guest hosts and
so Drew. It looks like it went. It went pretty well.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
I didn't.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
I listened to one segment while I was gone, which
was somebody said the pardon my take? People said something
nice about you, so I listened to that. I didn't
even listen to Patino interview yet. But but I appreciate
all you did.
Speaker 6 (02:02):
We had lots of fun. It both flew by and
took forever. You know, it seemed like normally summers are slow,
but we had so much going on it kept it
just kept the show flowing pretty seamlessly with all all
the unexpected sports that popped up.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
I was like, I love my trip. We'll talk more
about it as we go on.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I had like one moment, really two moments of what fomo.
One was when they went to the College world S
here yep, because I just I've been to that event
and loved it, and the idea of going with Kentucky
would have been all.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Had they won, then I might have gotten.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I seriously had the thoughts if they make the finals,
I might fly and the fly back, but then they didn't.
And then the second was when you got in a
fight with with the Louisville people at the It wasn't.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
A fight, it was an assault.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
We'll talk we'll talk more about that in a little
bit too, But I was like, man, I can't leave
Drew just out there getting hit at the games. But
it was it was a wonderful trip, and so here's
what we decided to do. Okay, because you know, there's
two hours of stuff, there's a ton of stuff to
talk about. I came up with ten things from my trip,
(03:08):
and I asked Ryan to come up with ten things
that have happened since I was gone, and we will
use those to kind of do our discussion. So we
won't take phone calls today. We will if you're listing,
take them tomorrow if you want to call in and
ask questions. But I thought Ryan, that would be the
easiest way to talk about all this by going kind
of alternating ten things that we did.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
So did you do your homework? I did?
Speaker 5 (03:30):
Yeah, And like I can speak for Druish and we're
anxious to hear what you have to say about your trip.
You know, we kind of you did a really good
job on Instagram posting pictures.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Where are you?
Speaker 5 (03:40):
You know, I'm in Ireland, I'm in Germany, I'm in Austria,
I'm in Spain. We all got to kind of follow
along a little bit. But now to hear the experiences
you had in these countries.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I cannot believe you did not tweet for ten weeks.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I sat on the airport runway at O'Hare in Chicago
to fly on my initial flight to Greece.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
I deleted the Twitter app.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Did you deleted it, and I said to myself, not
getting on it again. I never got on the app again.
There was one time I got on it online, which
was and we'll talk about this later, to see if
Donald Trump had survived the show. I did want to know,
Like when I saw that, I was like, I gotta
see what happens. But beyond that, never got on it,
(04:26):
didn't redownload it till I landed in Cincinnati really.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Just a few days ago, and I was off at
the entire time.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
I know you texted us just a couple of times.
Did you do a good job kind of just detaching
from everything?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
For the first month, I detached totally from everything.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
I would get up in the morning and I would
read the.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
BBC in New York Times and then look at ESPN,
and then I'd do it again before I went to bed,
because it was like six hours ahead there, you know,
in the one all the political news started happening.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Then I would check maybe three times a day. Yeah,
but I still I was more depatched.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
I mean, I went for my screen time or whatever
was about thirty percent what it is when I'm here,
which I was very proud of. And honestly, if I
didn't have to use it for directions to get around.
It would have been even less than that.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
Well, I think I can speak for everybody sitting here.
He got a huge cutter at kash Bar. He looked skinny,
he's lost weight. Heavy, dude, you look skinny.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
Well, I guess that's good. Yeah, I feel No, it's good.
It's a good look. Yeah. Well, you walk a lot, so,
I mean I walked.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
There were days I walked twenty five thousand steps, right,
So you walk a lot. And then the food that
we don't you know, they don't have as much preservatives
in it, so even when you eat Drew, you're actually
eating a lot better food.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
So I did.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
I lost. I lost a lot of it right off
the bat. I lost probably fifteen pounds in two three weeks,
and then I kind of stayed that same.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
Way the whole time. How excited are you for this
gigantic bag?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Everybody keeps bringing me these nerds and donuts, and like,
I'm trying, I'm trying to stay uh, just stay healthy.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
But I pread Costco size, right, I didn't know they
make that size.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
But I'll eat them. I'll just eat them. I'll just
eat them slowly. I already did get I think I
had a list of things I missed. I got my
first McDonald's dot cokey yesterday.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
I had the ks bar wings Uh.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I had the only thing on my list I haven't
eaten yet, Skyline, which I will at some point.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
I know you had to be happy as soon as
you come back, Max joined you be your roommate for
a couple of days.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Well, way to spoil the news. We were gonna report
like this week, nice shop.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Right, We're four minutes into it. He's back.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
And run right prepared. Ryan is already out the door.
Something something's never changed, and we're already back to Ryan,
spoiling the news. I was gonna save that for an
announcement later this week.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Got you.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
I didn't know that, but I'll go ahead and say it.
Max has taken a has taken a coaching job here
in Lexington. So he will be back and he will
be on the football pregame show.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Yeah, so he will be on the football pregame show
this year with us. And wait, we were gonna wait
and say that on Wednesday or Thursday, but I guess Drew,
now we're saying it now.
Speaker 6 (07:19):
I'm smiling, not because Max is back, because Ryan's back.
That was like, he did so good for ten weeks
and he does like the most Ryan thing.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
The key on immediately when I get back, and he's
the same. All right, So let's do the ten things. Okay,
So I'll just I'm gonna make mine short because I
know most people want to hear about the Kentucky and
and and and that kind of stuff. I'll start with
I I my first thing I landed in.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
I went to twelve countries. Wow, Okay.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
The first country I went to was Greece, and I'm
I'm gonna say to everybody, if you ever get a chance,
you need to go to Greece. Greece might have been
a lot with one other might have been my favorite place.
They are like, did you do you know how many
islands are in Greece?
Speaker 4 (08:00):
A bunch? What's the budge?
Speaker 5 (08:05):
I would say, there's nine hundred. There's nine hundred island,
little bit on, there's a little bity ones out there all.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Over the nine hundred island.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Okay, well it's like forty five Okay, so it's not
quite nine hundred, but they're all night. I went to Crete,
which is again, if you're ever going to pick a place.
It's awesome because it has beaches, it has mountains. It's
like it's still.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
A little it's not quite like the rest of Europe.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
It's still kind of country and the people maybe you're
like in the nineteen sixties and seventies a little bit.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
But I think it's awesome.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
And I spent a week there, and then I went
to Athens, and some of you have been to Athens.
There is no hotter place on the planet than Athens, Greece.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
And you know the what's it called the Acropolis? Is
that right? That's on top of the hill. But do you
know what I'm talking about?
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yes, I walked up there and there was like a
Japanese pop star that was walking up there, and he
had this entourage of people following him around.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
He was wearing a full suit.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
It was probably one hundred degrees hottest I've ever been
in my life.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
And he was wearing a full suit.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
And you have not seen people go crazy then you've
seen young Asian women about an Asian pop star.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Never seen thing like it.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
And of course I had no idea who he was.
And this man had to be one of the most
famous people that I've ever been around, even though I
didn't know who he was and he wore a full
suit and a hundred degrees weather. But I am a
huge Drew fan of Greece and that, along with Spain,
that was my favorite country and I highly recommend it.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Greece looks amazing. I hope to go one day.
Speaker 6 (09:43):
But running into someone that's so big and internationally and
not even on your shows, how big the world is
and what little we really know?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, Well, when I would go places and talk about Kentucky,
there would be some people who would know Kentucky basketball,
like a handful of people, and then they would go
who played there?
Speaker 4 (10:00):
And I'd say these.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Names like John Wall no idea who he is, Devin Booker,
no idea who he is? And so you sit there
and think it is insane that they that we live
in these separate that worlds. I'll tell you who they
did know though, Rick Patino, No, Rick Patino is huge
in Greece. That team he went and coached is the
(10:23):
biggest basketball team in Greece. So when I said Kentucky,
in every other part of the Europe, people would say
Kentucky fried chicken bourbon.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
But in Greece always Rick Patina.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Wow, Rick Patino could run for Prime Minister of Greece, drew.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
I had no idea how big Rick Patino. He wasn't
even very long, right, He.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Was there one year and they talked about how brilliant
they thought he was. And the only guy I heard
complain is one guy was mad he didn't learn to
speak Greek. But otherwise they they actually they love Rick Patino.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
So who knew?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Who knew?
Speaker 4 (10:58):
All right, So what's number one on your list?
Speaker 5 (11:00):
You kind of touched on the number one sports store.
I felt like we were gone with UK baseball. I
mean not just going to the World Series, but even
the first round games here were sellouts, then the Super
Regional sellouts every game. The crowds got bigger and bigger.
We had huge watch parties here at the restaurant. And
then they end up going to the College World Series.
That was a big story.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
I found myself listening on a lot of my drives
to College Baseball podcast, as crazy as that sounds, because
I was so excited about it.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
From Afar, I watched the did they play NC State?
Is that right? How they played?
Speaker 3 (11:32):
And I watched that game live. That was the one
game I got to watch live, but I thought it
was awesome. Do you think The question I have is
do you think this could like? Do you think we're
gonna be good at baseball from now on? Or is
this like cause you know, we had a kind of
a two guys get drafted high? Is it Do you
think it's like a one time fluke? Or are we
gonna Is this gonna become a baseball school too?
Speaker 6 (11:53):
The SEC is so difficult, but I do think there's
more of that to come. You know, it might not
be regularly, but I think there will be few at
your Omaha trips coming up. I went to every game
over there at Kentucky Proud Park. I'm so glad that
plays finally got its moment. It was so fun, every
single one of those games, getting there several hours early
to claim a spot in the berm if you had to.
I hope they continue to be.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
You love the pictures of the lines of people waiting
to get easy. And I'll say this, when I listened
to those baseball podcasts, the people, these National College Baseball
people kept praising the Kentucky crowd. They were like, the
atmosphere at those games is one of the best atmospheres
in the country, which goes to show when our fans
are into something, we're as big into it as anybody,
(12:35):
even if it's a sport that two three years.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Ago we didn't draw anything for.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Yeah, there was one game where they had like a
two hour rain delay and the fans set out in
the rain, didn't leave, And then the next day the
line was all the way down to Kroger Field and
it started raining and people stood in the line waiting
to get into the to the baseball stadium.
Speaker 6 (12:52):
You're right, I mean everyone's singing their walk up music.
One of the ones I went early to help reserve seats.
We're there are two hours early, and people were in
there screaming and doing chance and waving their pink hats.
It was just a crazy atmosphere that I didn't even
know was capable of putting together over there, And now
I want more of it.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
So did any of y'all go to the College World Series?
You went, nod? Did we get a good crowd there?
I never got a sense of if we had a
lot of people go.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
I know a lot of people that went, but also
know several that were waiting to see if they'd make
it just a little farther. So almost it's almost like
we didn't know how to handle it. Who when to
go ter Florida?
Speaker 4 (13:25):
And who? Who was the other one we lost to Lsu?
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Was it no to Anlo?
Speaker 4 (13:33):
That's who the other one was?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Well, I I definitely had Fomo and you guys were
I'm sure into it.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
Did you have Minji on on during it?
Speaker 5 (13:43):
He didn't get to join us live, but he'd called
in yeah and joined the show at one time.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Well, I uh, it looked.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
Like the most exciting thing. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
A big shout out to the Kentucky fans who kind
of I think registered us on the national radar for
that sport during So we're gonna talk about he's gonna
go over the basketball, the football. I know that some
people won't love it, but you're gonna have to deal
with it. We have to talk about all the stuff
that happened in politics because it was one of the
most historic two months that have ever happened, So we
(14:13):
at least have to deal with it and some more
on the trip. I'm really glad to be back. Thank
you to everybody for being here at Ksbar. We'll take
a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back Tugy Sports Radio here at KSVAR.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Great crowd here.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Hey, we are here all week Monday through Thursday. I'd
love to have you come out and say hello over
the course of the week. Then Friday, we're in Hopkinsville.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
I still don't know where we are in for Hopkinsville.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Where a vision glass like their new facility of the
facility in in Hopkinsville.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
Yes, so we'll be in Hopkinsville.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
And we are having our yearly annual State of KSR
meeting in Hopkinsville Thursday night. So if anybody in Hopkinsville
can tell us where we should go to celebrate, why,
it's gonna be a wild thing night in Hopkinsville. Right.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
Well, KSR Overnight haven't done one of those.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
First one Mario's ever done the first KSR Overnight. So
text machine is seven seven two seven seven four five
two five four one person rights, Matt. I actually hate
to tell you this, but Ryan wasn't totally wrong. There
are twenty seven hundred islands in Greece, although only forty
five to fifty are inhabited, So you were I think.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
My description there was a lot.
Speaker 5 (15:27):
I think kind of covered it all off.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Right, ye see, still away but that's okay, all right,
I'm gonna do my second one here.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
Can I tell you I only gotten one controversy me too.
We don't know this. Yeah, So.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
In Europe, every all the countries except England and one more.
I didn't know about the one more. They have something
where it's like open borders. So like if you go
to one country, if you're in Italy, you can go
to Greece and you don't have to show your passport,
right like, once you're in, you're in.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
You only have to show it the first time you
go into Europe. Okay.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
So it makes it to where like if you're taking
a train, it doesn't have to stop and do all that.
That's called the Shingen or something whatever. Now England left Europe,
so that's different. But Ireland is still in Europe, all right,
They're still part of the So I assumed that they
had the same rules that the rest of them did.
(16:26):
They do not, for whatever reason, they have an exception
where when you go into Ireland, even if you're coming
from a European country, you still have to go through customs.
I didn't know that, so I was walking through and
I get up to the customs. There's not many people there,
and I go do what I've done in every country,
which is just walk through. This dude, this Irish dude
(16:48):
comes running me down and he grabs me and he's like,
where are you going? And I said, oh, I was
coming from Madrid. I thought we were good, he said,
and I'm not gonna do the boys. He was like,
you're in Ireland. You're not in Madrid. And he like
pushes me against the wall and again, you were with
me in Canada, where.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
I thought I wasn't gonna be.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
You're in borders. I'm telling you. Your heart skips a beat,
you know what I mean, because you don't want to.
Like you sit there and think what if I end
up on a no fly list or something like that.
And then he looks at me and he goes, you
stop at the Irish border. You respect the Irish people,
And I like know enough to go okay, man, see
(17:31):
this movie. I respect the Irish people, you know. I
love it, Guinness whatever man. And then he takes my passport.
All he does is look at it and go okay,
and he just throws it back in Wow.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
So Canada and Ireland. You're on a list.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
You would think that with those would be the easiest
countries to get in.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
But don't just walk across the border in Ireland.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
It's kind of scary a little bit. There've gotta be
in a moment and you gotta think you're something. Oh
I am, because you're in it.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
I know it's not like a third world country, but
you're in a different.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Place, you know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (17:59):
And you don't.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
And I had kind of illegally cross the border, I guess,
but I didn't. I didn't know that that was the rule,
and so you got to be careful about that. Mad
Jones an illegal in Ireland just crossing over. I was.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
They needed to try to clear me out, all right.
What's number two?
Speaker 5 (18:15):
Well we didn't need a chance to talk about it
because it happened at twelve oh one after the show
ended Friday at twelve, where Kentucky gets has to vacate
the Wins from twenty twenty one gets put on probation.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
We have just got on Twitter. You just got on Twitter.
I just downloaded Twitter. And the first thing is you
we get that. So what's your take on it?
Speaker 3 (18:35):
You know, I heard back in in like May, this
was coming and the staff knew that it was coming.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
So this is from the Chris.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Rodriguez And I hate to call it the Chris Rodriguez
thing because there was ten other guys, but he was he.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
I think he was one of only two or three
that played. He and Jordan Wright played He and.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Jordan Right, So the other nine guys didn't play. So
really it's it's Chris rodriy is and Jordan Right. They
were working, is it? At UK Healthcare?
Speaker 4 (19:03):
I think?
Speaker 3 (19:04):
And I guess basically they were being clocked in by
a guy there and then never working and the and
that thus that made them ineligible that year. You remember
Rodriguez set out the first four games of the next year.
I sort of read it as I think they agreed
(19:24):
to this so that instead of fighting. I think, Mitch,
you know, technically if you use an illegal player or
ineligible player, they could have gotten put on probation with
a bowl band. But these rules, it's kind of like
people who were arrested for marijuana before marijuana became legal.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
The NCAA.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
I think the NCAA and UK just agreed, Look, we
know this wouldn't happen now, but you did violate the rules,
so this is like a middle ground. But it stinks
because that's ten wins. Mark Stoops is for right now
no longer the all time winningest coach at UK, although
he'll get it back at the end of the year.
I'm act like we won the games just like everybody
else does. I mean, I'm I mean I saw us
(20:04):
go ten to three, I saw us win the Citrus Bowl.
But it does mean things like I don't think they
can show the Citrus Bowl trophy anymore, which has been
a centerpiece of when you walk into the to the
UK practice facility. So I don't think it's a big
deal Ryan, But I also it kind of stinks for
them that they did it because it's one of our
(20:24):
two best years.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
Of my lifetime.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
Yeah, and I guess as far as the probation goes,
it doesn't affect postseason play, right.
Speaker 3 (20:30):
Doesn't affect scholarships, can't affect postseason play, doesn't affect recruiting restricts.
It really affects nothing except the record book. So it's
not it's not And all the the NCAA found that
the UK coaches and administrators did not know anything about it. So,
you know, but it does stink for those guys that
(20:51):
play on that team because at least in the short term,
there won't be an acknowledgment of what happened during that year.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
Yeah, as far as we go this season and moving forward,
it you keep your nose clean for two years, it
doesn't affect the program one IOTA does.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
But it's also I think it's not just football.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
I think a lot maybe the athletic department as a
whole is on not because it also included the swimming
team because during COVID you were not supposed to practice,
and the swimming team apparently held practices during COVID like like,
which is so I think it is a I could
be wrong about this, but I think it's a probation
for the whole athletic department. So, like every sport, Drew
(21:30):
is gonna have to make sure that they keep their
nose clean over the next couple of years.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Yeah, I mean, it's certainly not nothing. They were out
of line and that's gonna have an asterisk forever, and
that stinks. But I'm just so relieved that this upcoming
season isn't affected because most these guys aren't even on
the team. I think they're gonna have a special year ahead.
I'm glad there's not a lingering punishment. I hated for
that group that went had the ten win season, but
I'm glad it's nothing moving forward.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
You were at media day? You feel good? Are you?
Speaker 3 (21:55):
The vibes still good with this group? I mean, I
could tell you that there's a lot of people around
the program that think they got maybe the best defense
they've had in a long time, if not period, And
it's like, please Brock vander Griff be good, Please be good.
That's kind of the viewpoint over there.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:13):
I was actually in the indoor training facility and media
day was on the field, so I actually missed a
lot of it by hosting the show. But being around
some of those guys, actually barry On and Day or
two of them that have really like grown men and matured.
Baryon even talked about how he's a different person, a
lot more mature.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
And then you know that Doomas.
Speaker 6 (22:30):
Johnson, some of these guys they've added, Dion being back,
I mean, it just doesn't look like some of the defenses.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
I'm really looking forward today.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Everyone around the program will tell you the same thing.
If Brock vander Griff is good, we're good. Bring it
like we're good, it'll be a different kind of team.
I don't think our running backs are gonna be as
good as they've been the last ten years, although I
still think they can be good. But it's it's all
gonna come down to Vandergriff because I think our defense
is gonna be some growing. He's got great receiver death
not just Danae Barry, some great pieces doing well or
(22:58):
so we just got to hope this from Georgia. Let's
hope he's good. We'll take a break. Come back right here.
This is Kentucky Sports Radio. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney
called TJ.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
He'll make them.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Pay now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio here live at KS Bar
and grill. Uh So, for people wondering, we're back to
the old text machine. Okay, thank you to a vision
glass for giving you all one. Yes, but we're back
to the old one. So it's seven seven two seven
seven four five two five four, and I would like
to hear from everybody. I kind of kept that close
(23:35):
most of the time I was gone, but I would
check it once or twice a week, and I, you know,
it was a good reminder of why I like this
show was going. Was like that text machine because people
would write me going through stuff in their life, and
it was actually nice to kind of check in and
and and some of my communicate with who were dealing with,
(23:55):
you know, various things that was going on. So I
actually enjoyed it. Uh, one person rights, Matt. When you
were gone over there, did you see many UK fans? Yes?
So I twice ran into a Kentucky a KSR fan,
just out in public in Frankfurt, Germany. I was walking
(24:15):
down the street and this lady just goes Matt Jones,
and she was from Kentucky. We were walking down the
same street, not even a tourist street, like out in
the middle of nowhere street. I think I scared her
to death when I saw her. And then in Portugal,
I was at dinner and I heard people behind me
talking about Alabama and I was just gonna reach over
and say, I'm from Kentucky. And the woman was originally
(24:37):
from Lexington and had been at this bar right before
they went to Portugal.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
Really, so I saw two.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
I'd set a bet with somebody at one point five
and we got two. Now, when I wore a Kentucky shirt,
which I did a couple times, saw a ton of
Kentucky fans, including I want to say.
Speaker 4 (24:53):
It's Stutegart, Germany.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
There's a military base there, and I wore one there
and probably he met fifteen Kentucky fans who were who
were at the base, who were part of the armed forces.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
Were everywhere. Tucky fans are everywhere, So we were. You
had a question for me about well, I ask you.
Speaker 5 (25:10):
Did you were able to talk to your mom communicate
with your mom a lot when you were gone.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
Yes, I did. Let me tell you what my mom did.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
My mom went to my Louisville house and completely cleaned it,
redid it.
Speaker 4 (25:23):
Wow. You know all those boxes of books, boxed them up. Wow. Okay,
Like I went there last night, looks like a different place.
That's a job I didn't even think surfpro could do.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
And I was thinking I would never move just because
I couldn't imagine cleaning or packing it.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
So that was very.
Speaker 6 (25:41):
That actually doesn't surprise me though, because they were up
there for like a week doing it.
Speaker 5 (25:45):
Well, God bless her because that was a job that
I don't think any of us would want to undertake.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
So all right, what's next? All right?
Speaker 5 (25:51):
I think the third biggest story was La La Familiar
and the TBT tournament. I mean, this fan base rallied
around those guys. We had a show where the entire
team was here at KOs Bar and Drew and I
got the interview two guys.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
It was amazing. I wanted it to last for eight hours.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
We could have.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
We could have done an eight hour show. We you know,
two guys would sit down, then two more guys. It
was a lot of fun.
Speaker 6 (26:12):
Willie said, let's do a Bahamas tell all, and right
as we started getting to it, it was just here's
James Jong in the next one, and.
Speaker 3 (26:18):
Then we got to do a Bahamas because Willie's at
the center of all the stories on the up against
the clock that day.
Speaker 5 (26:27):
Of course, then it went to Louisville to Freedom Hall
and Drew getting punched after the game.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
So I want to get to that. First.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
Mario, like two months ago when we first hired him,
was like, we need to get into TBT Love Familiar,
and I was like, oh, Mario, you're so you're so
excited about this new job, Mario, You're so sweet. He
knew though, because because it looks like it kind of
(26:53):
captivated the fan base a little really did.
Speaker 4 (26:56):
And then that game in Freedom Hall.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
You were there, you said to me, well, I let
you say, what did you think about that people?
Speaker 6 (27:04):
If you weren't there, you might think this sounds crazy,
But if you're in the building, that felt like we
were about to tip off a significant NCAA tournament game.
People were so anxious and loud. You'd get the c
a rds chant, which has too many syllables going, and
then go big blue and try to drown it out.
Fans were talking friendli as trash. But that rivalry for
(27:24):
an exhibition tournament. I haven't seen it like that in
a long time. That place was on fire before that game,
and a lot of those players have history. You could
tell they had animosity going into it. I couldn't believe
how excited and fired up we all got for the
basketball tournament, something that's been in Lexton before. They didn't
really get a lot of tension.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Say what you want about Louisville and their fans, but
two thousand and ten to like two thousand and sixteen,
when Cal first got here and Rick was there and
Louisville was good and we were good. The atmosphere in
those games Gas was just like nothing. I mean, I've
(28:03):
been to a ton of Duke Carolina games. I don't
care what any of those people say. This is more intense.
It just is Duke Carolina. They respect each other, we
hate each other like there's a in the atmosphere in
a building. And I would argue it's as crazy as
it sounds, it's even more intense. And Louisville because they
(28:24):
hate us more than we hate them, like we've been
better than them for a while. So when we're there
and we're in that building, they are so mad and
they are so angry and they are so worked up
that the tension is just it's it's really exciting. And
you were telling me that Willy or No. I saw
the video. Willie said, it's the most funny he's had
(28:46):
playing basketball since twenty fifteen, since he was here. I
think that's really cool.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
We'd already been to three of them in Rup and
I'm standing by Mario. They introduced lot familiar and it's rowdy.
They're getting booed and then they it goes red in
there and they do like the whole entry that they
would do it the Young Center if it's a real team.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
It was so well and then we won, and of
course it's got to be a Harrison twin that hits.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
The show, of course. Yeah, you know, I thought it
was cool too. Mark Pope and his current team kind
of rallied around him. They went to all the games
at roup. They even went to Freedom Hall the team
did to watch the So let's talk.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
About that for a second. Mark Pope and the team.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
Again, just from the outside, I haven't been here, it
feels like they are intentionally trying to embrace all the
secondary parts of Kentucky basketball. The go to this, you know,
making appearance here talk. I love that about it.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
Yeah, they went to the baseball games and the you know,
during the College World Series run, they went to the
Lo Familia game.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
So yeah, and no on did they go Drew with Tay.
Speaker 5 (29:40):
They were some of the biggest cheer supporters up.
Speaker 6 (29:42):
There and rup r seat, We're basically sitting with them
when Mario and I were right in the middle of them.
It's not like it was another event they had to
do as a team. They were cheering like they grew
up watching Willie call Easton. Andrew Carr was getting up
out of a seat every time they scored. I mean,
all these guys were getting into it so much, and
that was their kind of first taste of BBN, really,
and and we've interviewed a lot of them since and
they're just even more excited to out do it themselves.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
I think it's awesome they got to do it, and
I think it's even more awesome than.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
Another thing that made it so cool is it wasn't
the regular season ticket holders. It's kind of like what
we say about madness. So at Freedom Hall, Stephen Peak
made this point. I don't know that anyone sat down
for the entire second half. We don't do that in
regular games. Everyone in there was standing up for the
majority of the game and cheering the whole time, just.
Speaker 4 (30:23):
Kind of all right, that's all nice. You got punched.
I did get punched, did get assaulted a little bit?
What happened?
Speaker 6 (30:31):
I turned to our dear friends, Marshaan Kendall. I am
doing L's Down as hard as I possibly can. My
wrists still hurt from doing ELL's Down all night, not doing.
Speaker 4 (30:39):
It to louisll fans.
Speaker 6 (30:39):
People keep saying, I'm in a little fans face, I'm
in Marsha's face because we love Marsha and she's doing
it with me. But I turned to join the celebration.
Give it Mario for our video right after, and right
as I turned, like getting hit by train. I didn't
even see it. I just felt a big thud in
my chest. I still felt it all the way up
through Saturday. So what, dude just hit you again?
Speaker 4 (30:57):
I didn't even know him, I had no prior in
her actions with him. And I look at him and
throw my hands up, like come back here.
Speaker 6 (31:03):
And then I start thinking, do I really want to
get a fist fight in the middle of Freedom Haul?
And I look over I'm like, let ever let that
guy be a loser, And then I walked to the celebration.
I didn't even know it at the time, but Abby
was like, I got all that on video.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
I didn't even know who did it. I didn't you
without saying the name. Do you know who did it? Now? Oh?
I knew.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
I'm not kidding. I probably had one hundred plus dms.
I have so many answered most of them, many of
them were louisvill fans calling him the worst uh Kentucky fans.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
I just can't imagine punching someone about a TBT game.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
And like I said, I didn't even know that I
had no priority.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
I didn't seen this person before, and I was just
turning to walk towards the court to continue my les
down And really that's when I turned, and it's not
two seconds later the loogie goes flying right in front
of me.
Speaker 4 (31:44):
All that was all in like a matter of seconds.
They spin on him.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Yes, Shannon, you can't spin on somebody, right, Like, that's
gotta be the rule. Like there whatever else you do.
I mean, I'd rather be punched than spin on, wouldn't.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
You Absolutely would have you spent on me. You're gonna
get punched in the stern just like Drew did.
Speaker 4 (32:01):
And he was spinning. Was it because of Nate Cestina? Yes?
Speaker 3 (32:04):
Who would have thought Nate Cestina's out here getting people
that worked up?
Speaker 4 (32:07):
Well? Uh?
Speaker 6 (32:09):
On a Haktua and Nate Cestina shook hands and it
looked cordial.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
Hang on a second, what did you just call it?
That's what we've been calling him on hawk Tua.
Speaker 6 (32:16):
Uh, But it was they had a cordial post game interaction,
and I think he said something about don't do ELL's down.
And I don't know if you has heard him, but
like three different people behind Sestina, including Less, throw els
down him and then it was on.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
So explain to me something and this is gonna be
true with our new Texas team coming in here? What
is it with these teams becoming like pansies with the
through through the horse that like what have Why do
these dudes? Why is that the thing that you can't do?
Speaker 4 (32:47):
I mean, it makes us want to do it so
much more.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
Yes, And that's the other thing, like the more they
hate it, the more I want to do it.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
I mean, I'm a I'm I'm a grown man. I'm
not gonna walk around going L's down.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
But if you sit and tell me you hate it, okay, Well,
ELL's down.
Speaker 6 (33:03):
Yesterday we stayed in Cincinnati Saturday night. We're checking out
of our hotel early Sunday morning and we're walking past
the valet and there's some Louisville shirts and Abbey just goes,
don't cause she knew I was about to hit them
with it right there at the valet too, because it's
just so fun to do because we know it gets
under their skin.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
And I do think I mean, we'll look back.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
I think we said this during the time, but we
will look back in history.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
I don't know that it'll ever.
Speaker 3 (33:25):
Be as intense as it was twenty ten to twenty
sixteen in terms of the hate.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
But here's what I like. I think Pat.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Kelcey, their little twelve year old coach that they have,
and Mark Pope, I think that intensity could come back
here in this one. I don't think they hate each other,
but they're both so energetic that it might come back.
Speaker 5 (33:43):
And I think this whole lot of me is gonna
just add fuel to that fire. I think this is
starting to happen with that bribery's gonna get back to
where it was at one point.
Speaker 6 (33:51):
I don't know if you saw like the anahawk to
a guy was complaining, he didn't even shake hands before
the game, like he brought the trash talk to the
game four times.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Ask you what was my favorite site I saw that
whole thing is Daniel Orton's mustache.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
Oh yeah, listen, we need more Daniel Orton. He didn't
start to fight, but he ended it. No one wanted
a piece I would not want Daniel Orton.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
He looked like he reminded me of a young Carl
Winslow from Family House.
Speaker 4 (34:17):
You're ready.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
He lives in Lexton now wants to do more ksrs.
There might be more Orton our fighter before Daniel.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
You're welcome to come. All right?
Speaker 3 (34:23):
Hey, ay five nine two eight, twenty two eighty seven.
The next thing he's gonna ask me, welly'd not. I
give him the PHE number. I know what you to
call seven seven two four five two five four. The
next thing he's gonna ask me is the thing that
could make some of you mad. So if you're gonna
get mad, just turn it off and come back at
eleven o'clock. For everybody else, we do have to talk
about what happened in the world while I was gone,
or at least in America.
Speaker 4 (34:43):
We'll be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
Welcome back Tucky Sports Radio here live at the Chs
Bar and Grill.
Speaker 4 (34:51):
Great crowd, uh.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
For a Monday morning, be here all week. Hope to
see you. One person rights Matt, How you said you
went to twelve Country. What was your favorite Spain?
Speaker 4 (35:03):
Yeah? I love Spain.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
I'd never been to Spain. I'm gonna I'm gonna go
there as much as I can. Like it's it's the
best temperature. Barcelona's awesome. We went and drove through Basque
country like San Sebastian and Bill baal Me and Hubby
and his wife Sarah, and then we went I went
down to the southern coast and I I that was
with of the all the places I've been in the
(35:25):
world so far. Just if you're asking me what's my
favorite overall place, I would say Spain.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
How close did you get to the bulls?
Speaker 3 (35:32):
So we were in Pamplona during the running of the bulls,
so we did not run, but we saw the bullfighters.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Yeah, and it was think about Marty Graw but maybe
more people.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
I mean, it was it was unbelieva if I was.
If you're listening to this and you're eighteen to twenty
eight or to thirty, take your friends and just go
because you'll have a blast. It was a little too
rowdy for like what I would want to do for
a long time. But if I had been younger, like
(36:08):
it's it looks like it's the most fun thing in
the world. But even if you're older, just I mean
the whole city becomes a festival, and it was.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
It was.
Speaker 3 (36:15):
It was so cool and everybody's playing music and dancing
and it's just great.
Speaker 5 (36:19):
That's kind of cool. You enjoyed Spain. You got to
share it with some of your your buddies that were
there with you.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
Yeah, it was great. It was I love Spain. All right.
What's next?
Speaker 5 (36:28):
Former president assassination attempt? Current president drops out? Yeah, Vice
president picks maybe our governor for candidate jd Vance. I mean, here,
let me, let me pull your string and let you go,
and I'll.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
Go through as it happened.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
I paid no attention to any political news the first
month I was there. I read that the debate was
gonna happen, but again, that was in the middle of
the night for me, right, that was at like three
in the morning, so I wasn't gonna stay up and
watch it. Walk up the next day saw the headlines
that Biden had just poop the bed, right, and I
(37:03):
was bumped because I thought, well, he's gonna lose. I mean,
he's gonna lose. If that didn't go, that was his chance.
And if that doesn't go, well, he's gonna lose. Then
I'm sitting at home about to go to sleep one
night and I get the text alert that Trump has
been somebody's tried to shoot Trump, And immediately my heart drops,
in part because I don't want to see anybody get
(37:24):
get hurt. But secondly, if Trump had been assassinated, that
would be awful for this country. I mean, it would
be obviously awful for him, but it would also be
awful for the country, Like it would have divided the
country in a way that I.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
Don't know how you come back from.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Because the conspiracy theorist, even if it was just like
they never would have believed. I mean, we still talk
about JFK sixty years later. Like I just thought, I
hope he's okay. Then I see he's okay, and I
see the picture of him with his fist up, and
I'm like, well, we're definitely losing now, you know, now
we have no chance. So once I saw he was
(37:58):
all right, I kind of tuned in again, and then
my thought was Trump's the next president, and so it
was like, that's what's gonna happen. Then when they started
talking about Biden dropping out, you know, I had mixed
I like Joe Biden, I know, a lot of people,
don't I do. I've liked him for forty years or
you know, since I was a kid. So when he
(38:21):
dropped out, I was happy because he was gonna lose.
I mean, he was gonna lose, and I was happy
about it.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
But I also was kind of like, man, that's hard
for somebody to do. Right then jd Vance getting picked?
Speaker 3 (38:37):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (38:37):
So jd Vance like I've had him on three or
four times. I until about a.
Speaker 3 (38:44):
Year ago, texted regularly with jd Vance, Like, it's crazy
to think somebody that you have made jokes with could
be the vice president of the United States. Now, he
and I kind of had a falling out about a
year ago. Not bad, but we just haven't really talked since.
Speaker 4 (39:01):
Then.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
I sent him a congratulatory text. He responded he was
very nice, but that was weird to me. Then Kamala Harris,
it looks like it's gonna be her. I was a
little bummed because I was like, I don't think she
can win. But then I think she's done a lot
better than I would have thought. Whatever you think of
her as a person, she's just done better than I
(39:21):
would have thought. And now the race looks tied again,
and now tomorrow she's gonna decide a vice president and
Andy Andy is one of the three finalists. Like, I
don't think they're gonna pick him, but they might apparently.
I mean apparently he's had secret service detail around him.
Because all the potential candidates picked up some extra security
(39:43):
in the last week, all four or five of them,
so apparently he's had that.
Speaker 4 (39:47):
So he's clearly one of the finalists.
Speaker 3 (39:50):
And all I could think about is what if the
two vice presidential candidates are both people who've been on
this show multiple times? Yeah, I'll go even further if
she picks Andy. I challenge any show in the country
to have interviewed the two.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
Candidates more than we have.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
You think there's any show that has had jd Vance
and Andy Basheer on more than us. No, I can't,
maybe like Meet the Press or something, but that would
be it. So it's wild. It's wild, and now I
think the race is kind of back to what it
was six months ago, a toss up, and we'll see
what happened.
Speaker 6 (40:26):
If it is Andy KSR Vice presidential debate. Get ready, Ryan,
get your bell ready.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Well, I will say this, we have been invited if
it is andy to go to the convention, so we'll
talk about it's in Chicago, so I don't know if
we'd be able to pull it off or not.
Speaker 4 (40:39):
But it's crazy.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
But the biggest takeaway I have about it, and I'm
not just saying this, I thank god that Trump wasn't killed,
because I just I don't know what would have happened
to this country if that happened. You know, we just
it's sad in and of itself, but it also would
have just been for the United States if that had happened.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
You know, when Trump announced Vance was his candidate, there
was that clip of you and JD. Vance that went viral.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
Okay, so there's another thing. He announces JD. Vance.
Speaker 3 (41:12):
I go to bed next morning, I check my email
and there are twenty five emails for media members who
want to ask me about that interview, asking me where
to get it, asking me what like do I And
I just ignored them all because I, you know, didn't
want to didn't want.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
To deal with it.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
But that's crazy to sit in here. That's that's an
interview I did nine years ago, an interview you did
nine years ago.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
All of a sudden showing up in the news is
kind of wild.
Speaker 6 (41:39):
I was just scroll on Twitter that night and it
popped up and I was like, Oh, Whayer's Matt And
I listened to it and I thought, Wow, this might
pick up some steam.
