This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now
here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Welcome everyone.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
This is Kentucky Sports Radio, Wednesday, September the eighteenth. I
am Matt Jones here on again. An absolutely perfect day.
Can't ask for a more perfect day than what you
have outside.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
It is beautiful and you can give it a shout.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Well, here's the thing I want people to call a
little differently today.
Speaker 5 (00:56):
All right, well you got all right?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Well.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
First of all, Clark's Puppet Shop phone lines eight five
night two eight twenty two eighty seven. A Vision Auto
Glass text machine is seven seven two four five two
five four in this diition sponsored by the TJ. Smithl
Off as you call TJ. I'm making pay. I got
Judge Yoakum here from Bell County in town. I think
it was partially wings Day, but also I think he
wanted to come by and say hello.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
We were talking before the show. Ryan.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
I watched the two thousand and ten John Wall team
play in that tournament in kane Koon where they played
it in a ballroom.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Do you remember that? Oh, it was literally a ballroom
that I watched.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
I watched that game in his house because in Middlesbrough
they didn't get espn U on cable, which is what
my parents had. There was no streaming yet he had
a satellite. He had Direct TV or whatever his house
and I went to his house. The game was like
at ten o'clock. I think we played I'm not sure Stanford.
Does that sound right correct? I have the answers, Okay,
(01:58):
where there were two games we played Stanford, is the
other one Virginia?
Speaker 3 (02:03):
No, it is.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
Uh is Ohio School, Dayton, Cleveland State, Cleveland.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
State, Stanford in the finals and both It was like
during Thanksgiving break and I was in Middlesbrough and I
couldn't see it, and so I went to his house
and I watched the games. You remember they played. You
could see the chandeliers, yes, from the game. That has
to be one of the weirdest games Kentucky ever played.
You could literally see the chandeliers.
Speaker 6 (02:33):
From the sea at the Moon Palace resort.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Do you remember. It was so wild it even went
to overtime. It did, and I remember the people that went.
There was a bar.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
You could see the bar on the baseline, so while
you were watching the game, you could see people lined
up for drinks on the bar on the baseline. For
those of you that are too young to remember this,
it was ridiculous. It was a basketball game and.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
It was John wall in a ballroom.
Speaker 7 (02:58):
Like you said, this was at the big tournament they
having Kancoon every year. This is the one down the
street around the corner.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Billy got a you know, all inclusive deal on where
you could drink for free, and that's why they played there.
And Billy used points to get us like Gilespie used
his point.
Speaker 6 (03:13):
It didn't have a bar you'd have like at a wedding reception.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
It was it was like the Harper Hall bar. It
was people in black and they were just they were
handing out you.
Speaker 7 (03:22):
Know, tell the story you said when the judge was
trying to rewind it to see something.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah, so he was during the game. You know it
was his TV.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
But you know, Drew, I don't do good at giving
other people their remotes at their house. For I think
he tried to rewind it and I said, I'm doing
the live blog, man, I go, I gotta stay live.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
He remembers that. So that was It's nice.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
That was a good a good time when you didn't
have the whatever the cable company is in the middles world
did not have ESP and.
Speaker 7 (03:49):
You a weird moment and you in John Caller Perry
history to go play at that game.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Little I was one of his first games.
Speaker 5 (03:56):
It was the first month he was on the job.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
I remember when it was over, he said, I want
to think think, I'm sorry my voice it's going in
and out. I want to thank the people here. We
probably won't play this in this again. He was like,
very clear, we won't do anything like this.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
And the schedule tells me it was on back to
back nights, so didn't even get a pool day there at.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
The It was like a Friday, Saturday or something during
during Thanksgiving break.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
But the game you were at his house. You said
it was at ten o'clock.
Speaker 7 (04:23):
I can remember seeing some video of the of the arena,
but I don't remember anything about those games.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Yeah, I think, well, I remember it was against Stanford,
and I also remember it sounds like the the fire
alarms going off, which is nice.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
You know that back door back there, do not open
the back door. They do that sometimes Mario will take
care of it.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
A f I'm nine twenty two eighty seven, uh a
vision auto glass text machine. Now here's what I want
people to do. Okay, what is for people who either
call or who write? Well, you got very simple. Your
job is to tell us if you you picked the topic.
Because I want today to be all positive.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
You know we had last week which was very negative
after the South Carolina game, then Monday and Tuesday there's
still people should we have gone for it?
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Should we not? Wasn't an interception? Was it not?
Speaker 4 (05:09):
And you just ended up with a lot of sort
of you know, disagree today. Your job is to keep
me all positive. Okay, I'm gonna keep you all positive, right,
and people can pick the topic, all right. We can
take a break from the normal topics. People can pick
the topic. Maybe one of them is, can we turn
this fire alarm all positive?
Speaker 3 (05:29):
See, this is a tough way to get me started positive.
When the fire alarm is going off.
Speaker 7 (05:33):
Right, Mario's on it, and just give him just a minute.
We'll have that thing shut off for Mario.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Did you get it fixed? You did?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
It's still on if we get a two thumbs up,
but again two thumbs up, but the but the alarm
is still on.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
It's a little distracting. Get done, Mario. Everything there's positive
for you all in here right now?
Speaker 4 (05:53):
There is that's exactly right. And it's wingsday, dollar Wings
all day. Come see us at lunch, join us and
uh jo joke. All right, So I'm gonna give you
a couple of to get this started. Get it started
either text machine or calls. I'm gonna give you a
couple of topics that people wrote in actually actually last
night or in the last.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Couple of days. All right.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
One person said, Matt, I'd like to know of the
Power four conference program. So we're talking SEC Big ten,
ACC Big twelve. Which team would the four of you
least want.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
To be the fan of?
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Okay, if you had to pick of the power programs,
who would you least want to be a fan of? Now,
I would suggest you need to consider football, basketball, and
let's even throw in like baseball and women's basketball, because
there might be teams like Vandy, for instance, that aren't
good at one, but you could win the national championship
(06:50):
in baseball. So which would you least want to be
a fan of? Ryan, I'll let you go first. What
comes to your mind is the team you'd least want
to be a fan of.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
The first two came to my head. The first one
was Purdue.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
You know what, that's funny. That was one of the
ones I was considering.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Why would you not want to be But besides the
fact you don't like, you can't just use I don't
like them.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Because I was an Indiana fan. What is it?
Speaker 7 (07:12):
It's I think it's just because they're uh. They did
have some success with Zach Edie, but they always seemed
to choke. They always seemed to not in basketball, which
is probably their best sport.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
The other sports.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
Football, baseball, I don't think they can come out to anything.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
So you think the fact they choke it's it's actually
Drew you and I have been there. I believe it
is a forty seven to one male to female ratio
at that perdue if we called it, Yeah, we called
it perdued because the whole time we were on campus,
we only.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Saw guys everywhere.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Yeah, so that so that that's one of mine.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
All right, what about you, Drew.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
I don't want to offend Ryan Lemon here, but Indiana
came to mind pretty quickly. I mean, football doesn't really exist.
I guess they've had a few good seasons recently, but overall,
Indiana doesn't really have football, even though they're playing it basketball.
You got your your grandparents and your parents telling you
how awesome it is, but you're just not seeing it
in front of you. You're going to school and it's
not happening.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
It's like the Sopranos.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
You're sitting there thinking the Mafia used to be cool,
an now we're out here doing this.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
You're hearing about how awesome it is, but now you're
a fan and you're just not seeing it.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
That's Wilmington. Limington's all right, but it's not pass through.
There's a chicken place that's pretty good.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
Said killgores or something, Yes, kill right experience, but you know,
I just not seeing a lot of success in the
two major sports.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
All right, Shanton, what about you?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Uh, Indiana is a good one. I would probably go Nebraska. Okay,
you'd have to live in Nebraska.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
That's a huge one.
Speaker 4 (08:39):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
They used to.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Be good at football, but now they're just not really
good at anything.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
This year though they just opened up. They could go
slightly back.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Nebraska could go nine to OZHO to start the season.
If you look at their schedule.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
I was still I think I would pick them if
if not Nebraska, like my one A would probably be
Minnesota because it's.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
So all right, so mine is in the same ballpark
Boston College, because not only are you not good at anything,
you're not. I mean, I know they beat Florida State.
Florida State's now and three you're not good at football.
When's the last time they've been good at basketball? I mean,
tell me the last basket? What was the redheaded no,
he was? What was the redheaded kid's name? Didn't they
(09:24):
have a redhead?
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Maybe?
Speaker 5 (09:27):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
I mean, name me the last Boston College basketball player
of significance. I can't even think of one, and I
could think of one for almost every school, Dana Barrows did.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
He go there? Didn't Bruce Pearl play there.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
That's not one I would put. I can't think of one,
all right. I don't even know if they have a
baseball team, and then I've never heard of their women's
basketball team. The other thing is you're in Boston, and
everybody cares about everything except Boston College. They care about
the Red Sox, they care about the Patriots, care about Celtics,
care about.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
The Bruins, and those teams all win.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
Those team have all won tons of titles, so no one,
no one cares about Boston College.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
So I'm gonna say Boston College.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
We got some good ones. That's a pretty good list
to get started.
Speaker 6 (10:09):
I considered Boston College and Rutgers, but I thought, well,
I could do other things in the area. Well yeah,
if it's just focused on your team, I agree with
that one.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
So we have Indiana, Purdue, UH, Nebraska, and Boston College
as ours our first round picks.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
My second one I thought of earlier at the beginning
was in c State.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Because they went they just went to the final four.
Speaker 7 (10:31):
They did, they didn't been the Foo four where they're
kind of lost in the shelf. And I would duke
in North Carolina. But that was like that's why you
liked them, because nobody else liked them so.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
And they actually for a for a team that did
until last year didn't win in a long time. They
actually have a large fan base. I mean they basically
you go Raleigh East, those people are all in NC
State fans and a lot of you know, North Carolina
has a lot of like uh rural African Americans, and
they love I mean that's in C State eight is
(11:00):
their team, so they they actually I don't I think
NC State's almost an underrated fan base if not for
you including baseball, I have Mississippi State high on the list. Now,
Starkville was just named by USA Today the best small
town to live in in America.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
What canceled USA Today? We went to the.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Starkville Yeah, when's last time you've seen in USA Today?
Speaker 3 (11:25):
By the way, like with the color the actual.
Speaker 6 (11:29):
That time we went to the USA Today conference in Vegas,
I might have seen one somewhere.
Speaker 5 (11:33):
They even leave one outside your hotel door anymore.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Yeah, so you you know you're no on on start.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
I think they're in the conversation, you know, football, they'll
have a one off here every once in a while.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Basketball not much. Starkville is Starkville.
Speaker 6 (11:47):
Yeah, but they got they got baseball going in their
little park with their athletic.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
Like the second or third highest attendance in baseball.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
And their campus right there is nice. I'll give them
credit for them. Yeah. Well eight five nine two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
The text machine is seven seven two seven seven four
five two five four. I need you to update me
on something, Drew, because I don't understand it.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
I gotcha. What is happening with these top recruits?
Speaker 4 (12:10):
A Cayden A Cayden Lewis and Caleb Wilson For people
who don't know, two of the top basketball recruits in America,
And it seems like on Twitter they're all like saying,
we're coming to Kentucky. But I never know what to
believe on those kind of things. What's the I got you.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
I'm actually, for the first time in a long time,
I'm a little hip on what the kids are doing
on social med I'm glad to hear so. Caleb Wilson
was was on campus. Caleb Wilson, where's this is? All
kids in next year's class?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Right? Yes?
Speaker 6 (12:38):
Okay, potential editions with Marino and Jasper Johnson. He's like
number two or three, Power Forward, five star. I really
want this guy. While he was on campus and enjoining
Joins time, he got a picture with the golden medal,
UH did some photo shoots. Ry visit last weekend. Caayden
Lewis isn't wasn't here, but he announced his top four
or wherever he was, and Caleb probade.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
Something like and one of them was Kentucky.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
Yes, And Caleb Wilson replied something like, come on over, bro,
while he was in Lexington, kind of implying, you know,
come on over would kind of mean come to where
I am.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Like come to where I am right now, or just
in general. I mean they're both considering UK.
Speaker 6 (13:17):
Okay, it's one of the only schools, if maybe not
the only one they're both going on. No, then Kayden
Lewis post a highlight video or no excuse me, Caleb
Wilson posts his UH recruiting recap, and Kayden Lewis writes
in the comments, I want to play with this guy.
And then Jasper Johnson has tweeted about them twice and
retweeted a Big Three meme. So there's a lot of
(13:38):
public flirtation between these, uh, these five blue chips.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Now, if they got all those guys, that'd be the
number one or two classes.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
Yeah, Mark Pope could tell everyone to eat it if
his first class had four five star prospects.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Right. So there you go.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
That's that's where we're caught up, Like do you think
any of this is is real?
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Like? Does I think it? Well?
Speaker 6 (14:02):
Even by themselves, not the social media stuff they just did.
They're both very high on Kentucky. Lewis is a point guard,
kind of said he wants to play with Jasper Johnson.
Wilson's kind of considering Arkansas maybe a little bit of
a leader, but very high on Kentucky too. So then
when you just package it all together and all this
tweeting and DM and meman, it's got this pretty exciting memon.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
All right, I got you. So there you go. That's
my report on what is happening with high school kids.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
One person writes, tell Shannon to hush, Minnesota has won
the NCAA Hockey Tournament forty one times.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
He doesn't know what he's talking.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
And guess what, nobody cares.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Nobody nobody cares.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
But your If I'm nine to twenty two eighty seven,
what is your topic you want done today? We'll take
a break. Be right back here at ks part. Jared Dudley.
That's a Boston college basketball player. I don't know how
I couldn't think of that. Apparently NC State Drew went
to the final four in men's, women's and the.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
College World Series last year. Wow, so probably would have
been a good year to be in the Wolf for
that was a loser.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Yeah, yeah, so, uh don't necessarily know that if I'm
nine two eight twenty two eighty seven. One first rights, Matt.
I saw you stop in Indiana on your way to Chicago.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
And I look to see what snack you would get.
See and by now are people looking even in Indiana
what snack? Yep? If you didn't get one, I.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
Thought you said you couldn't go anywhere without a snack.
It is hard for me when I stop at a
gas station to not get a snack, yep, very very hard.
But we you know, we were in the car a
long time, and if I just ate snacks the whole time,
you're gonna end.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Up, h You're gonna end up you know, getting huge.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
And so I didn't do that, but uh, I do
think in Indiana on the way there, I did get oreos.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
I think you missed out. I think you missed it, sir.
Speaker 7 (15:53):
I think I might have gotten What is there something
about that, that guilty pleasure of eating a snack while
you're drinking it's.
Speaker 4 (15:58):
Just all right, it's not gets, not guilty pleasure, it's
naughty or something where you.
Speaker 7 (16:05):
Yeah, you get scolded for it. Or I don't have
snacks any of the time. But I'm in the car
when our road trips we stop somewhere, I want to
get a little I didn't.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
Have to drink.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
So I went to get a coke zero yesterday and
I went to the thing and they were out, and
the only coke zero is that new.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Thing they have, the Oreo coke zero. Have you seen that?
Speaker 4 (16:23):
And that sounds gross to me, doesn't it? You Like,
it just seems like two flivvors that it just did.
I totally agree with you. It sounds like peanut butter
orange juice or something like. I don't understand why you.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Would put those two things together, so you try it.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Well, there wasn't any other coke zero, and so I
got it, and it tastes like Oreos does it? But
it's not bad. I don't think it's very sweet. It's
almost sweeter than a regular, so I don't think I
could want to drink it a lot.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
But it's not as bad as I thought it would be,
So it seems I could be a dessert. It's like
an oreo. It's not thick or anything.
Speaker 6 (17:03):
Well, I know it's not a milkshake, but it's like
so sweet that it's it's a.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Little sweet, but you it definitely I thought, how can
they make a drink that tastes like an oreo?
Speaker 5 (17:12):
It tastes like an oreo. It makes me want to.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Try it, Okay, exactly. It's it is for people like you, yeah,
to be able to do eight. If I'm nine two
eight twenty two eighty seven, who's up first, Steve?
Speaker 3 (17:23):
Steve? How are you, Steve?
Speaker 8 (17:25):
I'm doing fun, man, I love the show.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Thank you.
Speaker 8 (17:32):
I'll talk to you several times in the past, and
I don't really think you like me very much.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
But listen, Stephen, why would I don't know? Of course
I like you. Why would I not? He was just
talking about how much I literally, I literally of course
I like you, But go ahead.
Speaker 8 (17:47):
Come on anyway.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Man.
Speaker 8 (17:51):
The way you handled this whole situation with cal Perry,
I mean you've handled it perfectly. You articulated the blue name,
she was concerned, and you did it without being demental
or hateful or anything else. In my opinion, that to me,
you had just moved up ten thousand in my estimation,
(18:14):
and for that, I want to thank you.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Well.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
It's very nice of you.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
I don't know that everyone shared your opinion, at least
if you looked on social media, but I think probably
more people shared my opinion than didn't. And I think
for the people that were kind of very pro cows Col,
I think they didn't. I always thought they underestimated how
much of the fan base he had lost, because I
(18:39):
think if you were online, it didn't seem it seemed
like the fan base was kind of split fifty to fifty.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
But I always thought run in life, it was not
fifty to fifty. That in life, more people were ready
for a change than were not.
Speaker 7 (18:53):
Yeah, and we felt that to this show, going out
and talking to people people can't talk to us about
it was definitely.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
I mean in the bar, in this bar, all right,
there were very few people who didn't come up and say, man,
we got it, so so yeah, but anyway, what else
you got real quick?
Speaker 8 (19:06):
Steve, Well just you know when you got to stay
asked the question and I was you know, I was
jumping up and down and cheering.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
To thank you.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
That was a neat day. I'm not gonna lie to you.
That was a very very neat day. Thank you appreciate
the call that was That was a very neat day
because it did come at the culmination of a lot
of criticism. Mario had just started and we walked out
that I will say, walking from my house to RUP
the day of Pope's press conference and seeing the excitement
(19:40):
of the fans that were waiting there on the sidewalk,
it did feel like, you know, is after two days
ago when people didn't even want this guy, it now
feels like everybody's in. I still think there could be
a documentary drew about the Thursday night from when it
was announced until the press conference and the way the
(20:01):
massive change in the way the fan base felt during
that time.
Speaker 6 (20:04):
Yeah, Twitter was ugly that Thursday night. We wake up,
we do the show. Opinions start to change a little bit.
Mitch Barnhart gave that great interview, but then by Sunday,
I'm with you. I walked from the other end of downtown,
just couldn't believe my eyes walking towards Reparena and how
the lines on both ends of the building were so
long they met on one of the sides, just people
trying to get inside.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
I think that a lot of when we walked into
that show Friday morning at that at what was the
place that in there, the Bourbon, When we walked in there,
the fans seem negative, and then when we walked out
it was almost like they seemed positive. And if you remember,
during that period of time was when the announcement of
(20:46):
the five million in anile came, when the when Mitch
Barnhart came on the show, when Rick Patino released his video.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
You mentioned how some people were off limits in the
search that were high on a lot of this.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
That kind of helped. He's some of it, I think everybody.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
A big change for me was when I found out
that basically the president and the board of trustees said,
no Eli came out, you coundnot hire Eli coach basketball.
And was upset Shannon because I wanted Eli.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
A lot of people did you know.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
No Bruce Pearl, no Sean Miller, no Nat Oates, although
he had already I think said no Chris Beard and
no Chris Beard. They told them those four no. And
then once you assume those four no, and that you've
gotten to know from Scott Drew and Danny Hurley, then
the question is do you want Mark Poper? Do you
want Shaka Smart? And then that's a different situation, Ryan,
(21:40):
when you're looking at.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
It like that.
Speaker 7 (21:42):
Yeah, that that was such a unique morning where we
were all kind of processing everything at the same time.
I do think Mitch Barnhardt's interview does help, but we
had some really great callers that morning too. That got
us a little more optimistic about this hire and going forward.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
It is interesting to me if Eli and the university
board had not said you can't talk to those or
you can't hire those guys, I think Bruce Pearl would
have been the coach, and then what you know, then
what would you know?
Speaker 3 (22:14):
That would be.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
It's a whole different history, and I think maybe in
the moment the excitement would have been as big. But
Mark has been Mark's done this job almost perfectly leading
into the games.
Speaker 7 (22:27):
Would you agree with that yeah, all these questions about
his staff and about a roster fulfilled that now recruiting,
had the questions.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Interacted with the fans.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
Now the next thing is, you know what, you got
to actually go win basketball games, which is going to
be a big thing. But when you consider where it
was when I got the phone call on Thursday night
they were hiring Mark Pope to what it was at
Sunday night, it's amazing how quickly that changed. It really
is amazing. We will take a break and be right back.
Since Kentucky Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
TJ Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ. I'll make them pay.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 4 (23:05):
Welcome back Tucky Sports Radio eight five, nine, twenty two
eighty seven. You get to pick the topic whenever you want, okay,
and we're gonna we'll have to go with it. Some
from the text machine. One person rights, Matt, sounds like
you got out of your bet with Cody about the
presidential race. Do you want to bet me instead? No,
I'll continue the bet with Cody. I'm glad to continue
(23:28):
to bet with Cody, although I will say Cody one
of your friends wrote me and said, you don't pay
up on bets.
Speaker 5 (23:33):
Oh, Cody.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
One of your friends, Cody said, you were in the
fantasy league and you never paid the dues last year,
and then you didn't win, and so the winner didn't
get all their money. So I'm just saying, Cody, I
need verification that you're a bet payer upper before I
do it. But if you want to the bet with
Biden and Trump is void, Biden is not running. That's
(23:58):
that's exactly how they would do it. Yeah, Kentucky played Louisville,
and Louisville backed out like they did a few years ago.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
We had to play Western. If you remember the Kentucky.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
Louisville bet is voided, or you can look at it
like the lightning delay. You didn't get all the way
to the end of the bet.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Yes, so now I like that one too. So now
it's it's Harris, I'll bet you again. I'm more I
would have lost the other bet. I'm willing to say that,
but I'm going to win this bet. So you just
have to decide if you want to do it, Cody,
and also pay your fantasy football dues. You know what
I mean, Cody, you play. If you're in paytans fanacy football, Drew,
(24:34):
you got to pay your due.
Speaker 6 (24:34):
I think you need proof of payment from his twenty
twenty three fantasy league before you all could even consider
moving forward with your bet.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
Yes, Matt, I have a good story for you. My
mom recently was watching Fox News and she heard something
Harris was doing she didn't like and said, I don't
think I could like any Harris supporter as a friend.
And I said, Mom, you listened to Matt and those
guys every day, And she said, well, they don' don't
count him.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
Actually, I think that's a compliment.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
Yeah, I think that's his mom's way of being nice,
right that like that we're the one, the one she
would consider her for.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
Don't see eye to eye politically, But yet we can
still have a good relationship and she can still listen
to the show and enjoy herself.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Did you see Reggie Katrel. That's the kid from Harlan
with the long hair, the beautiful hair from the Sweet
sixteen last year? Remember his fireworks went off and took
a couple of his fingers off. Yes, and yesterday he
was back and he was dunking a basketball. How cool
is that.
Speaker 7 (25:37):
Love love love to hear that story. That kid is
back on the court and dunking a basketball. You know
that happened when you were gone. We tried to get
him on to talk to us, but apparently he is
so shy. He didn't want to come on the radio.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
He was very shy about the attention with his hair.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
We wanted to have him on ifter Sweet sixteen and
he's you know, you wouldn't think about it with that hair.
You think you'd be like ready to talk. But I'm
glad he's back playing basketball. You know, that was a
great story last year with Harlan going all the way
to the state finals before losing, and it was a
really sad thing that happened on the fourth Jove. But
glad he's back and hopefully gonna play this year.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (26:14):
I mean the family put out a statement like the
next day when he was still bands up, like, oh
God will be back. We're not quitting anything. Two months later,
it's pretty cool to see him already unk.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Cool to see, how do you like? So he lost
his was his two.
Speaker 5 (26:27):
I think it's finger and these two.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
So he lost parts of his middle and index fingers
in a metal rod and his thumb there, and he's
still gonna play.
Speaker 7 (26:38):
It's his non shooting hands. He's left hand, so maybe
he can still just play right handed.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
But that'll be that's gonna be cool to watch.
Speaker 5 (26:44):
Everybody in the state's gonna be pulling for that kid.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
I'm pulling for him. You know, we we picked him
out from the beginning.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
Yep, he still should be doing n I L shampoo
if nothing else.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Who's up next? Nathan? Go ahead and Nathan hey, I was.
Speaker 9 (26:58):
The one talks football. So we have one of the
best front seven in college football who had Carson Beck
just rattled almost the entire game. We have no excuse
for all offensive line who has the opportunity to go
against that front seven every single day in practice should
not be good at past blocking. Mean, they should be
getting better every single day, and they should. I mean
(27:20):
they here, they're going to face better than Dejon Walker.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
The means, well, they're not. They don't to be in practice.
They don't usually face the number ones. I mean usually Yeah,
the number one offense is going to face the number
two defense.
Speaker 9 (27:33):
Usually if our team, if our guys are that bad
at plast blocking, maybe they should be going against the
ones trying to get better.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
Yeah, I mean maybe those the and I appreciate the call.
The rules about practice and stuff have changed a lot. Uh,
so you just don't see you know, I don't know
how much they get they hit in end season practice
than they used to.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
But the point is still valid.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
I mean, you got a great defensive line on the
other side of your team, and we would need our
offensive line to be better. I think they were better,
but they still weren't great when it came to pass blocking.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
And then but what's so weird because they're so good
run blocking.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
I mean they are, like you know, they've kind of
they kind of dominated a Georgia front that's got multiple
guys that are gonna play in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (28:19):
Kind of makes stoops since comments in camp interesting when
he said we have to take Dion out of practice
so the offensive line can get stuff done. Were they
that far behind or should he left Dion in so
they could go against him? But you know, he didn't
talk about Yeah, he talked about how I had to
pull Dion out so the line can get working work done.
Maybe they should have left him in or maybe he
wrecked him too bad.
Speaker 3 (28:38):
Yeah, you know, the.
Speaker 7 (28:39):
Like you said the success they had in run blocking. Man,
they rushed for over two hundred yards against Georgia. I'd
be curious to see if anybody else even does that.
It comes close to that this season. That was amazing.
They were able to run against guys that gonna be
in the NFL next year, and they got two hundred
rushing yards against that squad.
Speaker 4 (28:55):
One person rights Matt last segment. I heard you say
oreo coke zero. I just pulled over and got one.
It does taste like an oreo. I was not lying.
It tastes like an oree. You wonder how does a
drink taste like an oreo? Tastes like an oreo. Another
person rides Matt, you're not gonna win that bet. I
don't know why you say you're gonna win that bet.
Trump is gonna win. Stop acting like he's not. You're
(29:15):
an idiot. Well, I mean we're gonna have a result reason.
There's no reason to get mad about it. Like nothing.
You say he's gonna change. They're gonna have it when
I win seven o four. See remember another bet I
lost in twenties. No, I'm not, I'm not I'm not betting.
Remember when I lost. When when my group lost in
twenty sixteen, what did I come on here? Inside said
(29:36):
he lost or she lost? Wish Trump the best? Then
in twenty twenty people came and screamed in my face.
And now seven o four, you're gonna.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Have to do it again, and it's all about every
four years.
Speaker 4 (29:49):
Yeah, by the way, I'm not gonna do this the
whole time. I don't actually know for sure, but I
do want to continue the I want you to have
to eat dinner at his house or whatever it is,
Cody's house. I got to make sure he pays up.
I heard that he doesn't pay up. I'm fans when
you never see Yes, who's next, Adam, Adam?
Speaker 3 (30:03):
Go ahead, Adam. Hey, First of all, the coke flavored oreos.
Speaker 10 (30:07):
I don't know if you'll have had those.
Speaker 3 (30:08):
Those are also pretty good. There, Hang on, there's coke
flavored oreos. Yep, that doesn't sound good, But I don't
know what that means. Like what would the coke?
Speaker 10 (30:18):
I had a hard time wrapping my head around it
too well.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Now I gotta try that me too, just to see
what that is.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
What is the taste of coke? Is it caramel or like?
Speaker 3 (30:28):
What is that taste supposed to be that? Yeah, that
is what is the kind?
Speaker 10 (30:31):
But I think if you cut into it, you'll you'll
certainly know that it's okay that tastes like coke?
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Interesting? Why ma, I have to try that just to see?
All right? Go ahead?
Speaker 10 (30:39):
Uh So, yeah, I wanted to go back to Boston
College basketball if we could.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
Okay, I'll probably exhaust my.
Speaker 10 (30:45):
Knowledge of the program. But you guys may recall a
few years ago when they got bounced from the tournament.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Uh, there was a.
Speaker 10 (30:52):
Senior player was very emotional in his postgame press conference
and he was asked what he would remember most or
miss the most about his time at Boston College.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
Remember his tears in his eyes. He said going out
to eat. Yeah, he said going out. That's right. He
didn't say that. Yes, you could probably pull up the club. Yeah,
that would be fun. That's fine. That clip he did.
Speaker 4 (31:12):
They asked him what he missed most about Boston College basketball,
and he said going out to He was like crush.
Speaker 10 (31:17):
Right, Yeah, I was expecting some heartfelt answer to that.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
He just going out to eat. That's gonna be my
call today. I like that memory. Thank you, appreciate the call.
Going out to each Huh, you know that the lines
are open. Lads are open. You guys get to pick
the topic.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
Really, lads are open eight five nine, twenty two eighty seven. Yeah,
all right, Shandon. I also want to tell you, do
you want to hear a joke?
Speaker 5 (31:42):
Well, you're gonna tell a joke?
Speaker 3 (31:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (31:43):
Is this your joke?
Speaker 3 (31:44):
Or I was listening.
Speaker 4 (31:45):
I was listening to Colin Jost and Michael Cha. Yes,
Michael Cha said that Colin Jos told a joke so
bad it almost made him quit Saturday Night Love.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
Oh, and he was so mad at how bad the
joke was.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
He was like, I'm going to quit Saturday Night Live
if you say that on the air. And Colin Jos
then said, now, I'm definitely gonna say it, and he did,
and apparently the joke crushed. Everybody laughed, but Michael chases,
it's the worst joke in fifty years of Saturday Night
Oh my. So I want to read you the joke
(32:23):
and see if you because it's the kind of joke
that I think you all would hate.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
Okay, Shannon, are you ready.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
I'm gonna leave the mic open. You can get my
natural reaction.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
Okay. So Ohio police arrested a woman for allegedly stabbing
her boyfriend for eating all of her salsa.
Speaker 4 (32:41):
Okay, well, how police arrest a woman for allegedly stabbing
a man her man for eating all of her sausa. Well,
you'd be angry too if your man was jalapeno business.
Speaker 5 (32:56):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
Yeah, I think I'm gonna quit the show.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Is that that's the worst joke that you've ever heard?
Speaker 5 (33:02):
I mean, it's it's not good.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
Mario laughed. Though Mario laugh laughed a little bit. Drew laughed.
Speaker 6 (33:10):
I gave it a natural smile jalapeno. No, I don't
smile much in here, so I got a reaction out.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
Of there, all jalapeno business.
Speaker 6 (33:17):
I laughed because it's so bad. Though I don't know,
I wouldn't quit. But it's a surety terrible. That had
a quittable joke. Maybe not quittable, but it's it's pretty bad.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
All right.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Well, I have to tell you made me laugh. Club
Blue is off to an incredible start this season. Before
every home football game, members have been stopping by. Gabe
told me he went uh to the one before the
South Carolina game. Okay, he said there were five hundred
people there Austin. This was Gabe's quote to me. He said,
these the players, the basketball players are unbelievably nice. That's
(33:51):
awesome that Travis Perry would meet people and let's say
I was meeting where are you from, sir?
Speaker 3 (33:57):
Yeah? Bean meat.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
He would meet someone from Mead County talk to him,
and then Travis would go introduce them to his other
teammates and go, this is so and so from Mead
count That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
Isn't that cool?
Speaker 5 (34:11):
Speak highly of the type of kid he is. Absolutely so.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
This is at the meet and greets that they're doing
before every game for Club Blue. You can be part
of it too. At the football game on the seventh,
that's the next one. The Club Blue members will excuse me.
The South Carolina game, they got a private tailgate. They're
gonna have more throughout the thing. They are gonna be
discounted tickets for the Blue White game that are coming,
which will go on sale soon. It is Club blueile
(34:36):
dot com today to support in ale at UK, activate
your benefits.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
It is Club Blue in ale. I have to give
the Club Blue guys a lot of credit.
Speaker 4 (34:43):
I think they've done a really good job with these
players and getting them to and getting this basketball team
to engage with the fans and the players doing a
good job as well. We'll take a break right back.
This is kso.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Working back.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
Take you sports radio. If I'm nine two eight twenty
two eighty seven. I was just saying during the first
of all, it's Wings Day, dollar Wings all day and night.
Come by you could try him. We uh we We
won an award last week for for best wings in Lexington,
So we appreciate those.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
Yeah, really good.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
We appreciate those folks that there's we we always have
one challengers, the two of us.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
We go head to head.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
I'm not gonna say who it is because I'm not
gonna give him the free publicity. But but there's I agree.
I think that because that place has good ones, good
ones too. This guy here is from Mead County and
we're talking about When I think of Meat County, I
think about the fact that was where I confronted my
tracker during the Mitch McConnell stuff.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
The guy that would follow me around. Oh yeah, if
you right, if you read the.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
Book, and I'm not gonna give the spoiler to the book,
but part of the book is me getting to know him,
this person that they had hired to follow me around
the state. And the first time I confronted him was
in Mead County at that pizza place that's in a
jailhouse or that's in a former jail. I think it's
called jailhouse Pizza, right cause we have done the show
(36:06):
at Mead County High School and all of a sudden
there's this dude there and I go, that has to
be my tracker, cause he's just sitting here at a
high school. And then when we go eat lunch, he's
there again, and so I go up to him and say, hey, man,
like I know what you're doing. It's fine, but like
(36:27):
you don't need to be sneaky. It's I know what
you're doing. And that started us having conversations that became
to us getting along later on, et cetera.
Speaker 7 (36:36):
I can remember you talking to him at the jailhouse
pizza place, and I remember it was it wasn't really awkward,
you guys, you know, you're just kind of just talking
and was.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
It could have been really awkward?
Speaker 4 (36:44):
Well, I mean I just was like, look, I'm gonna
be traveling all over this state, so are you We
might as well talk.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
To each other.
Speaker 5 (36:52):
Yeah, carpools.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
It's sometimes it's just me and you in these places,
so we might as well, you know, in.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Order to He got in trouble for outing himself too quickly.
Speaker 6 (37:03):
Like he was supposed to lay low and you're you're
on in pretty early high school and.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
County and there he is, and you're in Mead County
and there he is. There comes a point it's not
a coincidence anymore. It's like, clearly you're here to see me.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
I got it, you know.
Speaker 6 (37:22):
I just wondered if there was any blowback in his office, Like, man,
you couldn't make it a week.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
By the way, some breaking news Shannon.
Speaker 4 (37:31):
Running on Adrian wo Janowski of ESPN is retiring from
the news game to become the general manager of Saint
Bonaventure Basketball.
Speaker 7 (37:45):
That's the biggest woach bomb of the of the year
right there. Leaving ESPN to be.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
A well I think that's where you went to school. Okay.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
He's probably the biggest basketball reporter there is, so.
Speaker 3 (37:59):
That it is big news.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
It is big news.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Yeah, when he reported something, you paid attention to it.
Speaker 5 (38:03):
You know.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
The work at ESPN for the last few years ruined
the draft for a few years.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
Yeah. I mean, I'm not his biggest fan in the world.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
He wasn't the nicest to me over the years, especially
during the Cal years. Uh. You know, he didn't like
Cal and uh even though I would take up for Cal,
and that led to some.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
I see some interactions.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
But I wish him the best at Saint Bonabitcher. Who's
up next, Luke? Go ahead, Louke.
Speaker 11 (38:37):
Hey, Matt, I'm a student here at Western and uh,
actually I got exam like in thirty minutes. But uh,
I just think it's great that we're finally like getting
to play teams that like are in state. I wish
we could see more of it because I don't know,
I just think like it brings the state together, like
play Murray Morehead State playing more.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
You know, Ryan, I know you agree with good luck
on your exam low early in the semester. You got
a hard professor there giving you an exam in mid September, But.
Speaker 11 (39:05):
Uh, I got I got two of them this week.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
So oh man, who knew Western with that academic prowess?
Speaker 3 (39:13):
All right, Well, I appreciate the call. You agree with that.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
You've always been big on Kentucky should play the in
state schools in basketball.
Speaker 7 (39:19):
I love those games and I think even the opposing
fan bases love those games. Have that one chance to
come in here on the big stage and see your
team on the field. Like ek you see their guys
on the field with the UK Murray State's coming in.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
I mean, but you have to agree to come here.
You have to come here. You have to come here.
Speaker 5 (39:36):
You have to come here.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
We're not going there. And I know people want us
to go there, but we're not going there. No, and
we shouldn't go there. It's not charity. Yeah, I mean,
we gotta, we gotta. There is some business, right like
you were not going there. But if the teams want
to come here, yes, then I'm I'm for it because
and that was the thing is Murray Forever would would
make you come there. And I guess they now backed
(39:58):
off that because they're coming here, right Yeah.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
And Western's been big on that want Kentucky to come there.
At one year in football they played us here and
then we played them in Nashville.
Speaker 4 (40:07):
Yeah, but that's even different because we were able to
sell the tickets.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Yesh Field. We're not gonna play them at fog Diddle
or what.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
Is it bo Diddle? It's a long name. Now watching
what's the diddle? Who's a Frank?
Speaker 3 (40:22):
I don't remember his first name, but diddle Arena.
Speaker 4 (40:25):
Yeah, but we're not gonna We're not gonna go there,
and that's just the da Yeah, who's up next in
the game?
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Lee? Lee? What's up? Lee? Hey? Guys football.
Speaker 12 (40:35):
I know we'd be a dead horse in the on
the ground about this, but the going punting at the
fifty didn't bother me as much as at the end
of the first half. We just got a first down,
there's nine seconds to go. I thought, clock the ball,
keep your time out.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
He didn't.
Speaker 12 (40:53):
He called time out, and then he had to kick,
either kick a field goal or take a chance of
getting sacked. Where if he'd clocked the all you got
seven seconds left, then you got one time out left.
You can throw the end zone and then if you
don't score, then you can kick the field goud. That

that a lot. You know, it's interesting I listened yesterday

Speaker 6 (41:59):

here at ks Bar Wings Day.
Speaker 3 (42:24):
We'll be right back
