Welcome back.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
I remember two Kentucky sports radio here at the Pizza
Ranch in Iowa City. Six good Kentucky fans have come
here looking forward to taking the picture with the group
as we go.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
One of them's got a Mark Pope shirt. You gotta
like that.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
That's very good, it's very cool, said he, uh said,
somebody bought it for you for Christmas, but that would
he wasn't here yet your birthday? Okay, got you? So
that's uh, that's good that you've got a wolf shirt
there as well. But the Power Can Iowa basketball shirts
and a lot of Kentucky gear.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
Ryan.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Nice to have all these folks and we're partying in
the party room here at the pizza ranch.
Speaker 6 (01:31):
Woo woo, woo woo.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
Trying to wake us up here.
Speaker 6 (01:35):
Whoo.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (01:37):
I just did a lap outside the party room. Pizza
room is in the Hey, Shannon, got you? You roomed
last night with Mario.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
Yeah, he's a great roommate.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
He is, although he did say, what was at eleven
o'clock at night? Hey, you want to go get some wings?
It's eleven o'clock on a Sunday night in Iowa City.
He just thinks wings are available everywhere.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
Well, I mean we looked it up. One place was
a van it was open.
Speaker 7 (02:01):
We went there, they said the kitchens closed, and I
realized at that moment we went into a college bar
and I was the old man in the bar, and
I've never I've never had that billing before until last night.
Speaker 5 (02:10):
I go, this is weird, like we shouldn't be here.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Well, you know, I don't know what we'll encounter in
Carney tonight. We are so everywhere we go, I'm trying
to look up like unique places for us to go.
In Iowa City, they have the world's largest wooden nickel,
which is I like that the world's largest wooden nickel.
Speaker 8 (02:33):
Yeah, it hasn't been stolen yet.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I don't think you could get it.
Speaker 8 (02:37):
No, what was the what was the first one that
you gave us?
Speaker 4 (02:40):
There's a statue. There was a statue that's one hundred
and ten tons, right, and the guy built it, uh,
and he decided it's like on the side of the road,
and he decided, I don't like it on this side
of the road, so then he moved it to the
other side of the road.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
And it's one.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Hundred and ten I can't remember what it's called, but
it's one hundred and ten tons statue you that crossed
the road. I think he did it because he wanted
to tell the joke. He says, how did the statue
cross the road?
Speaker 7 (03:06):
I mean you could just say that it moved without
actually moving, and nobody would really know the difference, you know.
I just I just hope it's more impressive than Devil's Tower,
because that was any landmark of all time.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
We hated devils. By the way, there are Mario if
you follow.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Him, has a lot of various content out. We're all
doing different stuff on the trip, and some of it's
on our various personal accounts. But also you should you
should subscribe on TikTok KSR the show. As football news
comes out this week, we may go live. We were
prepared last night in the bar. If I got a
text that said Vince was going to Louisville, we were
(03:46):
prepared to go live from the bar last night.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Thankfully we didn't have to do it.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, you put us on notice. We may have to
do a live show here on TikTok or YouTube or
something to everybody get ready.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
So everybody get ready, So make sure you're following my Instagram,
ky Sports Radio or the TikTok KSR. The show here
is the Gus Johnson clip after the interview. Here is
his voice when it maybe got a little weak after
they were able to uh to go.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
He shit, Warren look egg unbelievable Jack Sawyer.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
But then it's one of the dream that then like
he sounds like a muppet, was a Grover Eaither.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
There's a little pause there where you know he probably
tried to swallow really hard to get his voice back.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
It was not come out no.
Speaker 6 (04:40):
Kind of sounds like he's in a choke hold. There's
like moments of like is he breathing? Is he okay?
Speaker 7 (04:46):
It was one of my favorite things on That's one
of my favorite calls of all time.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
That's right, Let's talk about basketball for a minute, because
we did play friday night. It feels like it's been
a long time ago. Beat Georgia's State by thirty. If
you want to see the whole Mark Pope has on
this basketball program.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
How about the crowd at that game.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
That's the largest November crowd for like a non well,
I mean even when we used to play North Carolina stuff,
those were in December. That may be the largest November
crowd that I can remember drew in since the first
couple of call years, don't you.
Speaker 6 (05:24):
Think, Yeah, I go to every game and for years,
and I'm not blaming anyone. It's just how it's been.
You know, you go to these November games against teams
like this, and their entire sections of an end zone
they're just completely empty. You know, maybe students don't fill
the student section all the way. There's always empty rows
you can find in Reperena this part of the year,
not the other night. And everybody was there early. I
(05:45):
usually leave our pregame show. I'm pretty early to Reparena.
It's hour and a half early. I can get food,
no problem. There's never a line. Every concession stand, every
little side shop. There's lines everywhere. There's people already in
their seats. This is all an hour before the game
was just on fire. We sit pretty high up now
in the media row, and we're up there in the
bleachers and there are people going crazy. When clash, Peters
(06:08):
kind of started talk about class. There's a guy next
to me. I swear I thought he was gonna go
over the railing and try to fight for I mean,
he's seventy something years old. It felt like old school
stories you hear about it. Just people piled it.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Let's talk about Clash Peters. What did we think Shannon
of Clash Peters the uh?
Speaker 5 (06:22):
I love his name.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
The bandana wearing fighting mom in a punk band, Cherokee
Park's nephew player that started a brawl with Kentucky and the.
Speaker 7 (06:33):
Game was closed until that moment, and then it just
made Kentucky mad and they just went off and it
was a completely different game from that moment forward.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
It wasn't that.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
I mean we were up six, yeah, and we ended
up winning about thirty. Yeah, Like I mean that.
Speaker 8 (06:46):
Like that, Yeah, I love it because you know, you
think of mock Pope, and you know he talks about
gratitude and analytics and sports psychology and all that. So
maybe a team thinks they could take us down by
just putting the country guy out, that it's just gonna
beat us up. No, no, will bait strip down.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I loved it.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
What's crazy is we just talked about his mom the
other day out of the I mean, I didn't even.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Know that was his mother, but I was.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
When I talked about Cherokee Parks, I said, I believe
his sister was the lead singer of a band whose
name I can't mention on the radio, the Nashville plea,
we'll just leave it at the p and I was like, I.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Think that's right. And then that's his mother.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
No idea, we all have obviously had no idea.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Wait, his mother's in the band.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
His mother was the lead singer.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
Do you remember when we were talking about Cherokee Parks
a sister.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
Yes, that was Clash Peter's mom. I didn't know that.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yes, wow, apparently apparently she named him Clash after the
band his first I didn't.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Know that she named him Clash after the man.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
So that band, Nashville p that was his mom was
the leading singer and they played in Lexington A line
as and I have multiple friends that wow.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Number seven about.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
Ryan on the pregame show too, he's calling him his
favorite player.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Yes, m Ryan on the pregame show, you missed this said,
my favorite player on Georgia State is Clash Peters, who
then tried to fight.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
First of all, that was a dirty play.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
It was a dirty That was.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
A dirty play. I mean, he could have hurt him.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
That's why I was kind of cool to see our
other players come to his rescue. Man that you know,
they're on the floor a mining we got your brothers,
We got your back. Dud Pope was out there kind
of trying to help.
Speaker 8 (08:28):
Did we get a receipt from my poke for how
much he ended up paying your ice cream? Because it
looked like I was talking about the ice creaming. He
gets up there and he goes, uh, the soft serve
comb free. I gave the credit card.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
I don't know what the amount is, but that I
found out that the ice creams are seven dollars. Okay,
seven dollars each looked to me like six hundred maybe
to one thousand people in line. That's a pretty big
that's a pretty big ice cream bill.
Speaker 6 (08:57):
Before he even made the ice cream announcement, you know,
we were there, we're talking about this might be the
biggest postgame radio crowd we've seen in several years. And
this before we evenknew he's gonna buy ice cream. So
we're just talking about how many people are there, and
then he makes the comment, then swipe the credit card,
get your ice cream on the way out. It's just
unbelievable the rush of people and how I mean he
did that so late at night after a game and
(09:19):
took care of everyone, and there were so many kids
there being holidays, both the both the games last week
had I felt like a lot more kids in there.
It was very cool of him to do that. And
I don't know if he knew the crowd was gonna
be that big, but he took care of all of them.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
All right, I'm going to take an early break here.
We just got word Vince Marrow is gonna join us
here on the show, so I'm going to take an
early break so that we can have a full half
segment with him. So let's do that right now, Rick,
We'll take an early break. By the way, I need
to do some ads. I don't think I've done one ad,
so let me do Red State Red State Barbecue. They
are better than Big Cat Barbecue.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Here's the light. They are at.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Kentucky, Southern Ohio, and Southern Indiana. Same thing at the
Liquor Barn in Danville and Etown. They're at Jungle Gim
in Fairfield and Cincinnati, Critchfield's on Southland Drive and now
the Public's in Louisville. And you can go to RedState
bbq dot com for all the sauces, rubs, gift cards
and more. The best barbecue sauce, the best place to
(10:13):
eat for the holidays RedState bbq dot com. Check it
out Red State Barbecue, and we will have a smoking
new year. We'll take a break, Vince Merrill when we
return this chas welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Oh wait, Rick, I forgot to send you the number. Sorry,
there's a lot of stuff going on, Shannon.
Speaker 5 (10:35):
Do you uh, I don't know if I got his number?
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Rick? Does anybody have your number here at it?
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Ye?
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Rin, you have Rick's number.
Speaker 4 (10:42):
Send that number to Rick and then Rick, you're gonna
call this You're gonna call Vince.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
Okay, all right, Sorry about that day. I got a
little bit taken back there. Twenty two eighty cent.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
By the way, it is Cyber Monday, and our KSR
gear on Kentucky Brandon dot com is twenty five percent
off all day, and we have new stuff. People have asked,
can we get new hoodies? Can we get new hats?
Can we get new shirts? It is all there today.
They just they're debuting some new stuff today on Kentucky
Brandon dot com. First time in a few years, we've
(11:19):
gotten some new KSR gear. So you can do it
and give it as a gift on this cyber month.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Yeah, time to load up right now today. Get a
good deal, get some good stuff for Christmas.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
That's right. You let me know Rick, when we have
when we have Vince. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
I guess I always I'm used to shann and being
ready to got your rock on there.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
I forgot to send you the Rick. Do you have
the phone number?
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Now?
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Sure?
Speaker 4 (11:38):
I'm working on right, A good deal? All right, go
ahead today, Rick's Arry. Let's go back for a second
before we get back to the to the football. Kentucky
plays Clempson tomorrow night. Esp Andrew actually has Clemson as
the favorite. That's not the betting favor, but they have
fifty point six percent for Clemson forty nine point four
for Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
What do you think about that?
Speaker 6 (12:00):
I mean, on a neutral floor, I would feel very
good about Kentucky. But I think it's all about the atmosphere.
Even though Kentucky's an experienced veteran team, they've seen atmospheres
like this before, this will be their first trip this
year into it and I've never been to Little John Coliseum,
but I can only imagine that place will be on
fire for a game like this that they probably didn't
think they'd ever have come to town.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
John Little John, it's great you think he'll be there.
If I was Clipson, I would get him there, definitely
bring him out.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
But to answer your I think it's all just about
being in their first away game of the year.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
I think it's a great test. We'll talk about it
in a minute. Right now, we do have Vince Marrow
on the phone. Vince, thank you very much for your time.
I guess I'll start with this. You know, they were
clearly uh rumors last night, but from the Louisville side
and then a little bit from the Kentucky side of
you potentially going to Louisville. Are those we're now hearing
are those rumors untrue?
Speaker 9 (12:55):
Well, I'm not going to keep a comment on that
because it's like you know, when you hear unless you
you know, you take a job, or you put out
that you're taking a job, it's just rumors. And uh,
you know, I'm here. We were working all day yesterday,
all through the night. You know, usually on after the
season is over, you know you go home and you
(13:15):
may just coming office for a couple hours. I mean
we were in there till about nine or ten o'clock.
You know, stups and everybody, just getting this roster together,
and it's kind of like getting ready for the NFL
Draft coming up, you know, with signing day and the portal.
So just making sure we're doing the right things and
doing good background checks on people that we're gonna go after.
So that's what we were doing all day yesterday.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
If you look back this season and you and it's
four and eight, is the ultimate file record, where do
you think it went sort of wrong?
Speaker 3 (13:45):
And then how do you fix it?
Speaker 9 (13:48):
Well, that's that's that's a that's a good question, Matt,
that's a good question. Hold a while, That's a good question. Uh,
you know, I think, like anything else, first of all,
to say, you know he was about Mark steps is
this I mean we and had you know, eight straight
bowl games, Uh, turning this thing around. We first got
(14:09):
here twenty thirteen. Did we want to have this season?
Now there's nobody in that building excited from Mitchell down,
but the support is there and we're gonna get that
back on the right track. But I mean we have
we have one bad season out of the last eight
and you know, nobody, nobody is happy about that. And
(14:30):
so I think we get back on the right track
of you know, regrouping. You know, we had a come
to Jesus meeting yesterday with the whole staff. We uh,
you know, sat down and talked about personnel, We talked
about coaching, talked about support staff, and I think you know,
Mark is in the right place of how he's starting
this thing and uh, are still really good where it's
(14:53):
going to go, do you I.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Mean, we we saw some things during the game Saturday
that you know, with some players, et cetera, that maybe
we're frustrating the fans. I mean, do you think there
was an issue with maybe people getting a little bit
off track in the locker room?
Speaker 3 (15:08):
And if so, how do you change that?
Speaker 9 (15:12):
Well, I think that's another good question is that, Man,
this is a big organization. You got about one hundred
and twenty players, you got you know, you got a
lot of supports to as I think when you with
this new portal era, you've got a treaty Like the NFL,
you can't just go in the NFL, they just don't
just go and draft a guy without doing background check, sitting,
(15:35):
you know, you know, investigators in to see who this
kid is and what type of his makeup is and
I just think, you know, this is the most people
we took in a portal last year, and I think
we learning from this. I know there's gonna be a
thorough you know, background search and knowing who were getting
and seeing anybody had connections to this kid. It just
(15:56):
ain't gonna be a free for all that. Hey, you
got some guys in this portal. You just bringing a
man because it ain't just us. I mean I can
look at other schools who body in more guys in
the portal and they killed their culture. And I just
this is just me talking, and like, I just think
you have to do your homework. You have to bring
in the right guys and mix and mix me in
(16:17):
with the guys we recruited from high school for our
guys that know what our culture is. And you bring
in leaders, you know, whether it's guys that's already in
our program or guys that you see in the NFL
that they bring in hogh character guys that also can play.
I think that's a big combination of everything.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
Do you I mean, do you you mentioned culture? Do
you think there was a culture issue this year at all?
Speaker 9 (16:41):
Man? It's kind of it's kind of funny when when
you're when you're losing, everything is under a microscope. Uh.
I think you know, Mark would be the first one
to tell you. I mean, if you stop learning, then,
to me, you're not gonna be a good head coach.
You're not gonna be a good position coach. You always
learn from what what's going on and how things are.
I think Mark would say at first he said, you know,
(17:02):
he let something slip. I thought he was saying a
little too much of that because I think you got
to have just the right players in here too. And
to answer your question, maybe it did slip. I mean
there's some things that probably transpire that you know, people
see from outside that it's like, hey, you know, that's
something very small. But then when you say hey, you
(17:24):
start losing, it becomes a bigger issue because now you
don't have no culture, Now you don't have the right guys,
Now you got bad coaches. I just think, man, it
was one year. One thing I do know about Mark
Steep's he's a Youngstown guy. This will not stay the
same way it is. I can promise you that.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
So so looking forward, you know, I listen, you know,
I talked to a lot of fans and there are
a lot of fans that are are down and not
just about what happened, but even kind of pessimistic. If
you were to say to fans, Okay, here's why you
should be optimistic about the future, what would you say.
Speaker 9 (18:00):
Well, say two things. I mean, you hired the right
guy that you know meeting this program. Secondly, with the
transfer portal, as we seen, you know, if I'm being honest,
I think we were so not surprised. You know, when
you play South Carolina, you play Vandy and you're like, man,
how you knew the roster you were going against? And
(18:22):
then it's like, hey, they get some guys that come
in from the portal and you're like, man, these guys
are pretty good. He's like van I mean, you take
that quarterback off of Vanning. I'm just being honest. They
it ain't that kid made them go. And so if
I was to talk to our fans, we got our
we got the ministration behind us. You got from the top,
doctor Kabaluu, doctor Eric Munday, Mitch mark Hill all the
(18:46):
way on down. You've got the support You've got, you know,
Joe and Kelly Kraft and a lot of supporters who
give to this program. They all behind it, so now
we just got to go get the right players. We
would get the sticks. And I'm not concerned at all.
You know that taste in our mouth, it's gonna mask
for a couple off, you know, a couple of months
(19:07):
until we go back out there and play. I really
feel good where we're gonna go, and we're gonna have
the right players in here, and we're gonna get this
this damn thing going.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Let's talk about the recruiting class.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
You had a couple guys de commit and go to
other schools yesterday.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
That happens at the end.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
Do you feel like this recruiting class will stay solid
in the last few days and do you feel like,
to whatever extent you may lose people, you can make
it up somewhere else.
Speaker 9 (19:34):
Yeah, I think, And I'm not saying Jesus Christ or
anything like that. I think when stuff started leaking about
me leaving, and you know, sometimes schools do stuff like that.
And I'm not saying Louisville, Like I got a great
relationship with Jeff Brown, played with them a really good dude.
But I think sometimes there can be another school to
(19:54):
push stuff out there, to try to mess with your
recruiting class and mess with the guys that we got admitted.
You know, I had it. I'm on the phone now,
you know, talking to different parents because they did nothing
was said, and it was like everybody thought I was
leaving it. So there's no doubt in my mind. You know,
we're gonna get this thing right the class, even with
the class. And the second part of this is we
(20:16):
are already on some guys in a portal that we
doing a good job to say, Okay, these are the
guys we're gonna bring in here. So no, I'm not
I'm not worried about that at all. You know, man,
I'll take recruited very serious.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (20:30):
Actually it kind of perked me up. And I will
say this, you know, I know that one school taking
taking a lot of shots. But signing days Wednesday, so
we'll see. You still got some time, so we'll see
what's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
I do like that.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
So it's not it's not rocket science that one of
the problems was offensive line.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Do you expect that to be addressed?
Speaker 9 (20:52):
One hundred percent? Yes, very very one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Yes, Okay, and we got some guys.
Speaker 9 (21:00):
I mean, you can't just overheart when you've got we've
got some guys already in the boat. What I'm saying,
like with Jager Burden and a lot of these guys
that are here. I mean, there's some solid pieces. We
just got to replace two tackles in the center.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Do you I mean, I do think it's I just
wanted to make sure everybody's clear. You expect to be
in Lexington next year?
Speaker 9 (21:25):
Yes, yep, yes, okay, all.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Right, last thing, signing day coming up at the end
of the week. Do you think there will be any
new additions between now and then beyond the people already committed? Yes,
all right, Well there you go. He's keeping his cards
close to the best. Oh, Max says a question, Go ahead.
Speaker 8 (21:46):
Coach, love you love that you stay in By the way,
I just want to know one thing. Uh, there was
a there was a person on this panel, maybe named Jerry.
I've seen you in the ring with him before. He
hypothesized that if you went to Louisville, he was may
be going to call you a little dog how long
till it was going to be rematch number two and
you get.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
Him back in Vincy said if you went to Little
But he would call you little dog.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
It was gonna hurt me, Vince, but it was gonna
have to be done.
Speaker 9 (22:11):
Hey, hey, Max, you know you might do so you're
gonna be my promoter. So get that that next match
ready soon.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Because I got He said that, Just say that.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
He said, this is what he would do when your
name came up. Oh you're gonna do it. No, you're
gonna do it.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
No you're staying. I don't have to do it. It
was a small it was just a little whipper bark.
But you're staying. So we keep the big dog. We
struggled with the Australian this year. I look forward to
that trip. Me and you jump on a plane. We'll
get out there. We'll do some recruiting.
Speaker 9 (22:43):
Yes, let's do that. And you know again, Matt like man,
it's one year and I know there's been a lot
of talk about it's going this way, going that way.
I can promise you. Mark stews is very motivated in
the staff. There's a lot of rumors going around about
this staff. I'm telling you right now. Everybody was in
the office yesterday working is Mark Pragnan. Would there be
(23:04):
a change here in there? That's Mark Stewst. He have
answered that it could be, but I know the main
core of this is still together.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
All right, Vince, thank you very much. We appreciate it.
Vince Merrill. We will take a break and be right
back here in Iowa City at the Pizza Ranch.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
This is KSR Walk Back.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
It is Kentucky Sports Radio. This segment sponsored by State Renovations.

(23:45):
three D previews of how to look, daily progress reports.
They guarantee their fixed quote. It's all there a State Renovations.
Turn your house into the home you always wanted. With
the State Renovations, I was looking at houses this weekend.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
Right.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
Uh you know if I, if I when I get one,
I'm gonna I'm gonna need to renovate it and make
it look like myself.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
Give me shoe closets. The peatment that these houses in
Lexington are expensive.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
They are very expensive.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Why are they doing that, like, why don't they make
it less expensive? You know, I mean you're a realtor.
Can you fix that? No.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
I want the higher the cost, the more commission I make.
So yeah, I like it when those prices keep going on.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
Yeah, he's not.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
I mean, look, I'm gonna use you. I'm already questioning
your math most of the time. You clearly don't know
song lyrics. And now you're telling me you want the
price to be higher. You're supposed to get me the
price lower.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Oh, I will negotiate you a good price, but I
don't want the overall market prices to stay high.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
I don't want them to drop down.
Speaker 6 (24:47):
When I used them, we put in an offer and
the number was higher. I was like, that's not what
we offered.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
Ryan.
Speaker 6 (24:51):
He's like, yeah, but I get more commission for this.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
Did you say that?
Speaker 6 (24:55):
No, I didn't say that Ryan was a great realtor.
I'm messing with him, okay, as my endorsement.
Speaker 3 (24:59):
Yeah, well, I.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
There's a funny story. When Drew and I were showing houses.
We had to take our shoes off and went into
a house. My sock was completely ripped. My toes were hanging,
toes were hanging out this sweet Yeah you walked around
with your greasy toes. Yes, yeah, so you didn't think
you might have take out your shoes. Let me wear
full socks. Why don't you throw socks are not that expensive?
(25:21):
Throw them away if they have holes in my socket?
Ripped putting it on?
Speaker 8 (25:24):
This war like, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Rip putting it on? Yeah, you just you You put
it on so tight that it ripped.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
The reason there's more socks than chairs in this world
because away.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
She's showing off her new finished kitchen and I can
see three of Ryan's toes off. Fo see what you
have to look forward to?
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Don't touch me. I eighty seven. One person rides matt Uh.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
There are all kinds of rumors out there about stoops
Uh and Purdue. What have you heard about that. I
haven't heard anything. I mean, I've just seen the comments.
I don't know if that's like just random people. I
haven't seen anybody that is a reporter that has connected that.
I've seen random people connected, but I haven't seen anybody
that's like connected to Purdue or Kentucky say it. So
(26:11):
I'm I'm I'm skeptical. I know there are some reports
from Iowa. People that if there's a potential that the
Iowa job may come open, that Kirk Farentz may retire,
it would be very funny if we were here, if
that were to happen today and we were here in
Iowa City, Max, that would be interesting.
Speaker 8 (26:28):
And if we see Mick walking around the streets, maybe
getting a tour at the same time as us, we'll
let you guys.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Know he's in the basketball facility, that's gonna be a little, uh,
a little nerve wracking.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
So Vince says he's gonna be here.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
He wasn't his usual raw raw self, but he also
he also he also said though we're gonna do it.
He wasn't, but he wasn't the usual ra that we
Howard Dean asked scream that we knew.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
But he did say he's going to get the right guys.
Speaker 7 (26:56):
And if he does stay here at Kentucky, I have
fullfiden that he can get the right guys.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
One thing I'm never worried about with this staff. There
are things I am worried about. One thing I'm never
worried about is getting players.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Max.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Now, they might get guys that aren't a good fit.
I think that happened this year. But in terms of talent,
there was a ton of talent on the team this year.
Like I'm not talent is usually not the thing I'm
concerned about.
Speaker 8 (27:19):
One thing he talked about, which I loved and we
mentioned it in pregame show on our Ksle Football podcast
was he said there was gonna be a massive emphasis
this time and looking into not only the talent of
the player, but the background check and the quality of
the person. And I think maybe he admitted that's something
that they brushed over. Let's just get the most talented
guy that can run the four to three, that can
you know, jump on someone's head and catch a ball.
(27:40):
He really seemed to emphasize, Hey, we're gonna put a
lot of lot of time into working out what kind
of person.
Speaker 4 (27:45):
And they had dudes that I think we're ruining the
locker room Ryan, who also didn't play.
Speaker 3 (27:52):
Right, Like I think everybody tends to focus.
Speaker 4 (27:55):
I think, Look, do I think Barryon Brown worked as
hard as he should have this year?
Speaker 5 (27:59):
No?
Speaker 3 (28:00):
Do I think he gave one hundred percent effort all year?
Speaker 9 (28:03):
No?
Speaker 3 (28:03):
Do I think there were issues there? Yes? Do I
think he is the problem of what I talk about
with culture.
Speaker 4 (28:09):
My answer is actually no, I think that you know,
he could have been better and he knows it, so
could Dion Walker.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
But for me, the culture problem, we're dudes who played
a little or barely played at all, but that can
still ruin your locker room, right.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
And I wonder if that's the guys that Coach Troops
is talking about they don't have to have a conversation
with by pack your.
Speaker 5 (28:28):
Bags, we don't want you here anymore.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
There may be some of that, some of those guys
you're talking about right there.
Speaker 8 (28:33):
We had a moment against Missouri maybe twenty twenty, and
Stoops made it a point on the Monday meeting. We
had a goal line stand and everyone basically on the
sideline besides the two guys that were waiting to get in,
we're just sitting on the bench staying warm. And he
was like, this isn't acceptable. And that's where one thing
where you can have guys that aren't playing that can
(28:53):
bring everyone else down because they want a pout that
they're not playing. You know, if you're not playing, will
card to get better and then you play.
Speaker 6 (29:00):
I was just thinking with the guys that come in,
one thing that Vince, did you know, I'm with you.
That didn't give me a lot of confidence. But him
acknowledging that we drop the ball a little bit with
just some of the attitudes personalities, if I didn't get
any bit of confidence in what Vince said, them focusing
more on that, because we all know how different it's been,
(29:21):
wasn't it. I think TV Williams an old receiver. He
tweeted a story about you know, he's one of Stoop's
first recruits. He was even he was talking about how
they weren't allowed to wear sleeves, he couldn't sit on
the heated bench. It just sounded like there was so
much more coaching and discipline when he was here, back
in the early days. And I'm hopeful that since we've
seen it get so bad and hearing Vince kind of
acknowledge a little bit of fault there, that at least
they're focused on trying to clean that.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
That's a tough balance to be a coach who's a
player's coach and who sort of lets the player be
himself and then also not have players at the concession
stand at halftime.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
I do wonder if we're going to look back in
the video of.
Speaker 4 (29:57):
Minci at the concession stand Shannon is one that we
kind of I remember this season from. I mean, I
think that's gonna be you know, I mean, that made
National News, that was on that was on Barstool, that
was on ESPN, that was on House of Highlights like that,
and it was just a fan.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
I think who took the video. That's gonna be one
that'll stick with him a little bit.
Speaker 7 (30:15):
There's a big difference, though, between allowing a player to
be himself and.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
Allowing them to go get a hot dog.
Speaker 7 (30:21):
I mean, you've got to have some rules in place,
and if you're just letting the guys just wander off
at halftime, then clearly it's just a free for alls
the wild West.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
You gotta have at least a baseline of discipline.
Speaker 8 (30:32):
I want to coach. His favorite sayings used to be
paining a discipline or paying no regret. I think there's
gonna be a lot of pain of discipline coming up.
Speaker 6 (30:37):
I don't want to just keep dumping on him for
going to get his hot dog. As funny as this,
but I think it should it. But I think it
being him specifically says a lot too well. He was
that's a guy you went out probably paid a lot
of money for the confessed program.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
He was at that look he I mean, I'm not
putting it all on him, but Ryan, he was definitely
a big part of it.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
He a huge part of it.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
You know, they missed out on a couple freshman offensive
line recruits. They went and got these transfer portal offensive linemen.
Missed out on a couple of those guys. So let
me say where where I am? I'm wanna ask you
what you where you are? If Stoops does flirt with
Purdue or another.
Speaker 6 (31:16):
Team, to me is inception.
Speaker 5 (31:18):
He's got one foot out the door. He's looking.
Speaker 4 (31:20):
We don't know that he's farting with him. I thinkful
that he talks to him, then I think it's even
harder to win over it went back right now.
Speaker 6 (31:30):
A lot of fans are wishful thinking and they're seeing
it opening and trying to force him into an interview there.
Speaker 4 (31:34):
But yeah, the ones that want him going, I want
to switch gears for a second. Mario, who's been on
the trip? Mario, this is your first time on the
road with KSR. We're one day and what are your
thoughts so far?
Speaker 10 (31:45):
A lot of fun getting getting to see a little
bit of the country, a little bit.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
It's the farthest west you've ever been.
Speaker 10 (31:52):
Farthest west, very cold, a lot of snow, a lot
more than I expected.
Speaker 3 (31:56):
You don't like snow?
Speaker 6 (31:57):
I actually don't like snow?
Speaker 3 (31:59):
Why not?
Speaker 10 (31:59):
I like it for like the first day just seeing it,
But once I see it on a consistent basis.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
Not going anywhere. Yeah, but get used to it now.
Speaker 4 (32:08):
You you couldn't walk up my driveway.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
Why do you? Why do you struggle so much trying
to get up a hill?
Speaker 6 (32:14):
I don't know what was that about.
Speaker 10 (32:16):
It feels my Jordans that I had on, or it
feels like the bag. The bag was so heavy that
it was kind of making me a little bit off balanced.
Speaker 6 (32:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 10 (32:24):
I felt twice, we gotta get you some snow boots. Yeah,
we definitely gotta give me something like that.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Now, what what happened at the bar? Why were you
were taking all these shots? Did you do you think
you maybe came out a little a little strong for
I mean, this is a non day trip and you
were four fireball shots deep thirty minutes into the trip.
Speaker 10 (32:43):
Yeah, some wonderful fans case our fans gave us, you know,
some fireballs, and then Max Duffy he set chairs and
then I was like, hey, why not chairs? And I
opened my fireball up and then.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
And then he didn't drink it.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
You didn't drink Yeah, I guess did you drink it?
Max drinkers?
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (32:59):
Yeah, yeah we did half.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
But you know, we used to say that. We used
to say that to Mimosa. Billy, are you like one
point one Mimosa Mario?
Speaker 10 (33:10):
No, usually that doesn't happen. The fireball thing that usually
does not happen.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
You usually don't like almost throw up on face.
Speaker 10 (33:15):
Yeah, that's why I was so surprised that when it happened,
Like I was just.
Speaker 6 (33:19):
If I could defend Mario one fireball over to mimosas
is a lot more aggressive. And it was morning. We
haven't had breakfast and we had to eat.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
Yeah, that's part of it.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
Now, what's it like? You're in the back seat with
Shannon and you're rooming with Shannon. You two are a
little bit like the odd couple a little bit? How
does that work?
Speaker 6 (33:36):
Why the odd couple?
Speaker 5 (33:37):
We get along great. Actually, he's a perfect roommate, he says.
He doesn't say a word he does, like.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
You don't say a word either, Oh, what are.
Speaker 7 (33:44):
You talking about? I'm talking about in the room in
the room in the back. No, I'm preoccupied. I'm doing
my thing back there, he does. Yeah, you can't hear
me up there in the front anyway. I need a
megaphone so you can hear me.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
So, no, we talk, We have conversation. What did you
all talk about in the hotel room? Just when wait,
give tell me a conversation you two have had?
Speaker 7 (34:02):
Talk about food, we talk about talk about women.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
Are you talking about love?
Speaker 3 (34:07):
We talk about love? You all had a conversation about love.
What was your conversation about love?
Speaker 6 (34:12):
What was our conversation about life?
Speaker 3 (34:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (34:14):
I was two beers in. Don't ask all these questions.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
So it sounds like you two really connected in the
first twenty four hour.
Speaker 5 (34:20):
Yeah, yeah, we're pal my little Korean snacks.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
Talk about that second Shannon, you're your girlfriend?
Speaker 5 (34:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (34:29):
So what did she what's so?
Speaker 9 (34:31):
So?
Speaker 7 (34:31):
I don't know what it's called. But there's a website.
Some of you listening may be familiar with this. There's
a website you can subscribe to and then every I
think it's every month, They send you food from different
countries all over the world, so you know, this month
that may be Korean and maybe Australian the.
Speaker 5 (34:46):
Month after that. So this was Korean snacks that they sent.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
And then every month you get a package.
Speaker 5 (34:52):
Yeah food.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
Is it all from the same country for that month, yes,
so you get it's like a taste of the worst.
Speaker 7 (34:57):
Yeah, like you know too much from now, it could
be whatever, whatever it is, and then you get the
taste like their version of our Doritos and you like that.
Speaker 5 (35:06):
Yeah, it's cool.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
You gave us. It was like Korean chocolate cheetos.
Speaker 7 (35:10):
Yes, and they they were brown cheetos, so you can
use your imagination with them.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
They look like but it tasted it much better than
it looked.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Well.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
I think you two becoming friends is a really nice
don't you think, Ryan, This is a nice part of us.
Like these two they.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
Don't because they don't get to see see each other.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
Mariosington Shannon's in Louisville, and now they're becoming fast buddies.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
Romance has brought blossoming right in front of our eyes
right here.
Speaker 7 (35:31):
But we went out late last night while you guys
were sleeping. We went out for chicken wings. The kitchen
was closed, Yeah, it was closed. So we just got
a beer and then I broke. I want to pay
Mario a compliment. I had one concern about this road trip,
and it was just the amount of people in the
luggage in our vehicle, and I was just worried about
being cramped up because this is of all the ones
(35:52):
we've done, this is one of the more aggressive drivings.
Speaker 6 (35:54):
But Mario was in charge of booking our our.
Speaker 3 (35:57):
We had a great car, we're calling it d DJ Wagon.
Speaker 6 (36:02):
But at the moment I got to your house at
seven am and saw the vehicle market, it got me
so much.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
Enterprise, that's your former uh, that's your former place. Enterprise
loves you.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
I went in there and they go, they didn't look
at me and go, that's Matt from KSR. Oh, that's
the guy on the radio. They went, your Mario's friend.
Like that's how good. That's how good you are. So
that is love. That's right, all right, Well, tell everybody
about Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
Stockton Mortgage, you know, say, if you're looking to buy
your this massive house, it's got it, maybe a little overpriced.
Speaker 6 (36:33):
Docktor Mortgage can help you.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
Doctor Morgan Hill, hold your.
Speaker 6 (36:36):
Hand every step of the way.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
And I've already told him. Now, when Matt does decide
to buy, he's gonna need a lot of patience. You're
gonna have to just be patient because the mortgage process
it can be a hassle.
Speaker 6 (36:47):
They're always gonna want something.
Speaker 5 (36:48):
From you, returns.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
I don't have any of it.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
Well, they're gonna need it. That's why they're gonna have
to be very patient.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
But you know what Stockton Mortgage is very well, you'll
they'll have to help.
Speaker 6 (37:00):
Them get it.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
Where is it?
Speaker 2 (37:01):
You're accountant, you're a tax person.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
I got a big book of stuff. Can I just
give them that?
Speaker 2 (37:06):
Yes, you definitely want to give them that so they
can help you as well. Give them a call or
go online at Stockton dot com. Mmls N m l
S a two five nine equal housing lender.
Speaker 4 (37:16):
You can't screw it up. I don't want to end
up like like you, like you. I can't come back
in like five years and they're like, oh, you don't.
You didn't have a mortgage.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
No, that's why Stockton Mortgage can help.
Speaker 7 (37:25):
Take up house without a mortgage less you're paying cash
for the whole thing.
Speaker 3 (37:31):
We'll take a break. We are here in Iowa City.
We are thirteen minutes from Pizza Range. Yeah, this is
UH Kentucky Sports Radio. Walk come back.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
It is techy sports Radio. UH eight nine two eight
oh twenty two sent. I don't want to keep saying
the number. I think it's just natural because we're not
We're not taking we will take calls tomorrow UH from Carning, Nebraska,
so hopefully we will.
Speaker 6 (37:51):
See you all.
Speaker 3 (37:51):
I'll tweet out where we are.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
UH. If you're If you think you can come, text
me on the text machine seven seven two seven seven
four five two for a lot of people have written
on the text machine. Sorry, we haven't gotten to it.
We've been doing a lot of stuff. But one person rights,
and I get this in a lot of forms, so
I do want to address it. One person rights, Mat.
I know you friends with Mark and Vince. How do
you do you think your comments about both of them
(38:14):
and the whole staff are reflective of your friendship or
what you actually think? Do you think you're objective on it?
It's a fair question. I've said this for a long time.
There've only been since I've been doing this. Take staff, coaches,
media outside of these guys and then like the people
that worked at iHeart, like Venetti and Nick Coffee and
(38:34):
Terry Miners. I'm not really friends with anyone that does this.
I get along with people, and I like people, but
I have intentionally, well, either intentionally or just because I.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
Don't need any I don't want any more new friends.
I don't really I'm not. Yeah, I'm tapped out.
Speaker 9 (38:50):
You know.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
That's plenty right there.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
But there have been two that I consider my friends,
Dwayne Peevee who's now at De Paul, and Vince, and
so it does make it hard with them. I freely
acknowledged that, like you know, I mean last night when
I got the text that maybe there were rumors about
him going to Louisville, like I was, you know, I
can't stand Louisville and the idea that he could end
(39:14):
up there. I'm like, what are you gonna do? But
he's still gonna be my friend, and I'm not gonna
apologize for someone that is my my friend. If he
were your friend, you would be the same way. I
think people think Mark and I are friends. I get
along with Mark, I like Mark, but we're not friends.
I mean, I don't you know, we went to Vince's wedding,
I don't, I haven't. I don't know that I've ever
(39:34):
even been to Mark's house, so like, it's not like
he and I are friends. I feel like when it
comes to Mark and I was, to give me example,
I was much closer to Cal than I was to Mark,
and uh, you know you heard when I thought it
was time to criticize him, I did. And I do
the same with Mark that I freely acknowledged Vince. Vince
(39:54):
is tougher for me because he is my friend. So
when you hear me talk about uh, specifically Vince, if
you want to read it through the that's Matt's friend.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
I get it, like you should, you should, you should.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
But for everybody else, like you know, I don't know
these people. I have far fewer friends than most people
than most people on this show because I tend to
kind of be by, canend to be a loner. But
if you when it comes to Vince specifically, that's just
he's my friend, and he's I probably will never make
(40:30):
another UK sports friend because I do think it makes
it difficult. But Ryan, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna
not be a guy's friend. Because they didn't have a
good game. You know, like, that's not what friendship is
to me.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Yeah, I think we've gotten a lot of that this year,
that we weren't as hard on the football team as
we should.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
Just don't think that's fair, I know. I mean, if
you want to say that, you can say it. But like,
go listen to my postgame show, Drew and tell me
I'm not hard on them.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
I mean I was. I was pretty brutal to them
on the postgame show.
Speaker 6 (41:01):
Well, I saw a lot of that after the loss
of Louisville, hating on us. You. I remember though, about
a week ago, before losing to Louisville, you kinda snapped
a little bit on Stoops. You're like, grow up, like
shouting dinner the morning show and I'm thinking, man, he's
being harsh on him right now. And then on Saturday
it's just like.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
The Cow thing.
Speaker 4 (41:19):
It doesn't matter what you do. There are gonna be
people who get angry like it doesn't you know, it
does not matter what I say. I can say Cow's
a great guy, people will be like, you just hate
Cow and I can say Stoops grow up and they go,
you just love.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
Stoops, Like there's nothing I can say.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
The only two people I've ever been friends with at
the school are Dwayne Evince. That's just what it is.
And if you want to look at it through that thing,
I get it, you should. I'm friends with these guys.
I'm probably not gonna be as harsh on Shannon because
I'm his friend.
Speaker 5 (41:47):
And I'm not going to.
Speaker 3 (41:51):
