Welcome everyone in Kentucky Sports Radio. Monday, June the second.
I'm Matt Jones.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
It is a beautiful day.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
I kind of consider Ryan the usually people say after
Memorial Day for some reason, when it turns to June,
that's when I consider summer like June, July, and August,
and even though the weather hasn't totally felt like it yet,
I feel like we are entering the summertime officially in
my mind today.

Speaker 5 (01:16):
Well, I think you're gonna get your wish. It's supposed
to be in the eighties, I think the next three days,
so the summer is gonna kind of rush in pretty
quick with June. So maybe you're dead on them about that.

Speaker 6 (01:24):
It is.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, it's supposed to be beautiful after I think we
had more rain from January to March than like in
the last fifty years.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
But hopefully the summer is better.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Drew is in Lexi Tenman with Ryan Shannon is in Louisville.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
It was a I don't know, disappointing weekend. Well, oddly,
I guess it goes back and forth. The UK baseball
team loses last night in an absolutely heartbreaking game. They
lost thirteen to twelve after being up five runs twice.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Over the course of the game.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
They'd gotten up six and twelve to seven, and end
up even though it was twelve to seven with two
outs in the eighth inning, they give up six runs
with two outs on the board and end up going
down thirteen to twelve. It is the twelfth time this
year they have lost by one run, And to give
you a sense what that means, if you add the

(02:20):
previous four seasons combined, they had lost by one run
twelve times, and they lost by one run twelve times.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
This season as well.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Just a brutal loss after a weekend where on Friday
they get a game they probably should have won against
West Virginia and they lost. Then they come back beat
South Carolina, Upstate, beat Clemson in a game where they
scored one thousand runs, and then the West Virginia game.
West Virginia makes it to the Super Regionals. You know, Drew,
we don't end up usually following UK baseball with the

(02:55):
specifics that other we do other teams during the season.
But I watched a lot of this weekend. I watched
at least some of all four games, and watched a
ton of last night's game, which took I think nine hours.
What did you make of the entire experience?

Speaker 7 (03:12):
Like everyone disappointed by the finish last night, but what
a long day of baseball yesterday with that doubleheader, I
felt like both games took forever. I watched just about
every pitch of both. My whole Sunday was Kentucky Baseball,
and that last one, it just sure felt like they
were about to give us a Monday game and still
be in the fight. You have Burks hit the solo
home run in the eighth, felt like you're just adding

(03:33):
to that cushion, feeling in a good spot. You're up
five in the top of the eighth, and then the
wheels just absolutely fell off. Kind of a fitting ending
with the way the bulb pins kind of let them down.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
All year.

Speaker 7 (03:43):
They've blown a lot of leads like that, and it's
a kind of the way the season ended. It's kind
of how the season went all year. So crushing loss.
When it felt like they had another game in them,
they were about to handle West Virginia last night.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
They ran out of pitchers.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
I mean, ultimately, I think that's that's the issue, and
that's what happens when you Ryan lose that first game, right,
So they went into that game last night having played
one more game than West Virginia. They got some good
fortune in both the early game and the late game
that their starters were able to go a little bit,
you know, especially in the early game, go longer but

(04:15):
then when things started falling apart, they really fell apart,
and sitting there with two outs and all you need
is one more out and they just can't get one,
and they I didn't know in college baseball, I don't
know if this is true in the majors, Ryan, Is
it true?

Speaker 5 (04:29):
Like?

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Can you can just bring people in when it's with
Like it was three to one at one point on
the count and.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
Then they brought a different guy in.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Can you do that in the majors?

Speaker 6 (04:39):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Yeah, you can make a pitchy change at any time
in the count, for sure. But you're right, man, the
series was lost in that first game Friday. You had
a three to nothing lead, You had your best pitcher
on the man, and you couldn't hang on and win
that one. So you had to use a lot of
arms against Upstate and against Clemson and then against West Virginia.
So the debate is, now, Matt, should they have put
Cleaver back in last night just to stop the bleeding?
I know they were saving for today, but you got

(05:01):
to win the game first. Would would you have put
him in last night just to try to stop it?

Speaker 3 (05:06):
So you and Shannon would know this better than me.
So Cleaver's their a's. Let's say they put him in
and he pitched an inning last night. Is there any
way you could have pitched him today or starter's arm?
I mean again, I know that's not what happened to
you in the majors, but that people they're looking at
long careers. Though for those guys, if you had put
him in for to get that last out in the

(05:27):
eighth or to pitch in the ninth last night, would
you have been able to use him today or just no?

Speaker 2 (05:33):
I think you could have. Managers won't do that because
they have to go through the process of warming up
their arm and going out there and throwing. You know,
if you're throwing ten or fifteen pitches, why can't you
come out and throw another four or five innings the
next day. I would think that you could do that.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Ryan, I know it never happens, but could you Is
that a way or is it just like you just
don't do that?

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yeah, Shannon said said it right. He could have gone today,
maybe only gone two three, four innings, wouldn't be able
to go a lot, but I think you could have
got a bit out of him. That's why I think
man just to stop the bleeding. You gotta win that
game with night. Put him out there, pitch the bottom
of the eighth, close him out at bottom of the ninth.
You're playing today.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Well, they were set up to be to really have
a shot, but they didn't get it, and so then
when the game was over, that led to drew and
we all should be honest about this. I'll be honest
about it as well. What ends up happening in these
college baseball playoffs is a lot of us, and I'm
in this group, go from we don't watch most of

(06:31):
the year, and then all of a sudden, we're watching
every game and we have strong feelings about things right now.
There are people out here listening who've listened to them
all and their feelings.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
I completely understand.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
But then you have people like us who will come
in at the end have strong feelings and last night
online a lot of negativity about the game. I take
the view they were replaced from a College World Series team,
their entire starting lineup except for one guy, us their
entire weekend pitching staff from last year, and only brought

(07:04):
back a handful of guys on the roster period, basically
one starter out of their entire nine man lineup and
all their starting pitchers, and the fact that they were
in a place where you could argue we should have
won both games and could be in the Super Regional
I think is a compliment to mine.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
One in the year they did.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
It felt like to me some of our fans were
very angry about it and kind of and it just
sort of said to me, in today's world, it becomes
impossible to please people. If you expected this year drew
to be significantly better than this.

Speaker 7 (07:44):
Yeah, I mean they're playing for a regional championship. You
gotta be happy with that. I'd say most of the
frustration is just that e're up five and the eighth.
Maybe if they'd lose from the beginning, it doesn't hurt
us bad, But overall, think you gotta be pretty proud. Heck,
you scored Dan your thirty runs yesterday alone. It's just
you just ran out the pictures. You all said, that's
the whole story. When you're bringing outfielders in to try
to close out a game. They used five pitchers in

(08:05):
the eighth inning when it looks like West Virginia when
they bring in their starter from Friday.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
You got their ace.

Speaker 7 (08:11):
Yeah, in the night I mean, uh, Kentucky was just
trying to throw together what they could and that's how
it looks like when I just think the way they
lost is why people are so frustrated.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
So Ryan, you would make the argument if West Virginia
felt like they needed to bring their ace in, Kentucky
could have done the same thing.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
But you know, like I said last week, I think
this is the best coaching job Minjion has done to
the he's been here. Even take away what they went
to the World Series last year, what he did this
year is pretty amazing. So I trust him. They know
a lot more baseball than I do. But when your
ace is sitting over there and the bleeding is heavy bleeding,
you got to stop it somehow, And I believe I
would have brought him in.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
All right, so you they get I think drew a
lot of these guys back next year, right, I.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Mean, I am I correct.

Speaker 6 (08:54):
Now.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Of course you could lose some people in the portal,
but they they get a lot of these guys back
next season. Do you expect that to happen and for
them to be, you know, much much better even next year?

Speaker 7 (09:07):
Yeah, they have a lot of young pieces. You gotta
keep Tyler Bell. You know, he's he was a draft prospect,
he got drafted and chose to go to college. I
don't know what his thought is for next season, but
I'm sure he'll have opportunities to look at other places.
You got to make sure nil is in order. But
then in this series that Hudson Brown. I don't know
how close you all were paying attention. He hadn't really
played all year and he came in and had a
huge weekend. He did batting. At one point he was

(09:30):
like four for ten with a double home run, several RBIs,
So it got to see a little piece of what
he can bring too. But a lot of young talent,
a lot of young pitchers that will still be on
the roster moving forward.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
The worldwide Todd Harris's kid nate is.

Speaker 7 (09:42):
That late late two Harrises, Okay.

Speaker 4 (09:46):
Two Harrises late.

Speaker 5 (09:49):
Las dating against Clemson, Yes, yes, close them out.

Speaker 4 (09:52):
So a lot of a lot of positives coming out
of it.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Let me ask you, Channon, you Ryan, what do you
think about the way Kentucky plays. They've played like this
for a while, but I don't think it's ever been
on more display than it was this weekend.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
I mean it is.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
You know, they Clemson had seven errors in the day
game on Sunday, West Virginia had five, So.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
That's twelve airs.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
I looked at the box scores of all the other
games that have played yesterday, nobody had more than two
in a game, and Kentucky made it to where they
had twelve. Now, I don't think that's just a coincidence
because they're running everywhere. They just put the ball in play,
hope you will screw up they steal. Do you do
you like this style, this kind of small ball style

(10:39):
that Kentucky plays.

Speaker 5 (10:41):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
You know, it's a little bit of old school baseball
that you really don't see anymore. You know, when's the
last time you've seen a bunt in Major League baseball?
I haven't seen one, I don't think all season. But
you know, they play aggressively. They put pressure on the defense,
and I think that's why you see so many errors
from the other teams.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
I feel like this is a Ryan Lemon system, right Like,
isn't this what you would do if you were in
college baseball? I feel like you would have committed to
Nick Minngione to play the way they do.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
I love it. That's the way I played. That's why
I think it should be played. And they put the
pressure on the other team. And look they like you said,
they committed twelve airs in two games. I think it's
just like Shannon said, a lost art of baseball that
most teams don't play anymore. It's all power game. Tried
to hit the long ball all the time instead of
putting the ball in play, running, taking the extra base
and doing things like that put pressure on the defense.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
I will say I've probably watched collectively more college baseball
drew in these three days, just in terms of watching
all the various games. They had this thing on ESPN
Plus called Squeeze Play where they just went from game
to game to game, kind of like Red Zone for
college baseball. I enjoyed it. The crowds are are exciting.

(11:49):
You get to see teams you would never see. I mean,
Murray State won two games and is playing today. I
think it gainst Old miss for a chance to go
to the super Regional, but they will cry. State won
their first two games. I really enjoyed watching them, and
they're you know, cheering on the racers. I kind of
think the way college baseball does their playoffs, making it

(12:10):
double elimination. I actually think it's awesome in the one
and two seeds are both out, which doesn't happen in
the other major sports a lot.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
So I love it.

Speaker 7 (12:19):
Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I'm watching more
than I've ever watched, too. You have six more regionals tonight,
winner take all games. Last night, I don't know if
you saw, but Tennessee lost on a walk off walk
Lake Forest had bases loaded in Tennessee through four straight
balls to lose and extend that in Knoxville. So there
were some other close and wild finishes around around the

(12:39):
tournament last night too.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Yeah, and it's weird to me, Shannon that these baseball
like that you can have a Murray State beat Old
Miss and Georgia Tech back to back. Murray State had
not won a tournament game since nineteen seventy nine, and
then they win two back to back and are playing
tonight for a super regional. That's right, I mean, right

(13:02):
State knocks out Vanderbilt yep from the from the tournament.
I don't baseball is such a random sport like that
that you can get those results that I actually think
it makes it wildly entertained.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
It just comes down to pitching matchups, I think more
so than anything in baseball. You know, it depends on
who you're starting, and that a lot of times, you know,
it depends on how the starter, you know, if he
can get you know, go four or five innings in
the game, or do they have to turn over to
the bullpen and make a bullpen game out of it.
So it just so much comes down to the starting
pitchers in these games. It doesn't really matter. Like a

(13:36):
right State could come in and beat Vanderbilt like like yesterday.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
They are too long though, Yeah, games all day, five hours,
like eleven o'clock.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
You have to pack a lunch and a dinner to
watch these games.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
They are so long. And I say this with all
due respect. Sometimes it's clear some of these announcers drew.
They've got people who this like they only do it
once a year, right, they bring them out for this
weekend and they have to call every game, and you
could tell sometimes they are struggling with things to.

Speaker 4 (14:07):
Say at the end of these games.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
That's got to be a tough haul doing nine hours
a day of college baseball.

Speaker 7 (14:14):
They're doing their best and whatever it is, that's extending
these games in the postseason. It's not helping them at all.
Especially yesterday, I felt like UK played baseball for sixteen hours.
Maybe they did, but it was just all day long
with that double letter it was it was.

Speaker 3 (14:28):
It was a long day. Unfortunately, Kentucky doesn't get the victory.
A f I've nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven.
Give us a shout. We'll take your calls on anything.
Text machine seven seven two seven seven four five two
five four. A lot of other stuff happening, including got
to interview John Wall yesterday, who said something that's got
me very excited.

Speaker 4 (14:45):
We'll take a break right back. It's KSR working back.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
It is Kentucky Sports Radio A five nine two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven. Text machine seven seven two
seven seven four five two five form when Merson rights
Matt it's not the season any result of upsetting. It's
that the team found ways to lose the same type
of games all year again. I look, I'm not gonna
claim to have followed the team well enough to know

(15:09):
the the you know, the the talent level, et cetera.
But Ryan, I saw a ranking on the athletic going
into the NCAA Tournament that had the top one hundred
and fifty draft prospects playing in the NCAA tournament, and
Kentucky didn't have one of them. Okay, I mean there
wasn't even one person on the list. That tells me
that we're not exactly, you know, beaming with talent. Why

(15:32):
that is is probably a combination of the fact that
they went all in last year. I'm not sure that
our NIO for baseball is what it is what it
is at a lot of these other schools, but that's
partially I don't know why you can get so upset.
Part of the reason they lost one run games is
they just didn't have quite enough talent to beat a
lot of these good teams. At least that's how I

(15:53):
would see it. Do you agree or disagree?

Speaker 5 (15:55):
No? I agree. I thot think you can make a
good argument that they actually overachieved this year with all
the young talent on the new faces they had replacing
all that talent they had from last year's team, to
lose twelve one run games, to be leading in like
twenty two of their twenty five losses, whatever, it was
something like that. I think maybe you could say they
kind of overachieved this year with what they had to
work with.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
If you look at if you add up all of
their SEC games and then these four games that were
in the NCAA Tournament, Drew, they lad at one point
in their SEC and postseason games in thirty one of
the thirty five games.

Speaker 7 (16:33):
That's really great and.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
That's an amazing stat.

Speaker 3 (16:35):
They were at fifteen to nineteen, but yet they led
in thirty one or excuse me, thirty one of their
thirty five games.

Speaker 5 (16:43):
These are their best teams in the country the SEC.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
Mean, that's a crazy stat to me, Drew, if you
think about it.

Speaker 7 (16:49):
Oh, definitely obviously not finishing games and as you said,
I don't know they're in IL either, but you got
to load up on some pitching bullpen just let them
down and most of those opportunities where you go up,
get a big lead, your start to play well, and
when he goes to the bench, they just couldn't finish
getting it done. So that'll have to be where they
add moving forward. But they were scoring the runs they
needed to all year, just couldn't.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
Our Kentucky Branded most controversial text of the day, one
person writes, Matt, we have the whiniest fans online who comment,
and it's completely obvious they have no idea what they're
talking about. I saw multiple people say Minjion can't get
it done. They do the same things with Stoops, they
did the same thing with Pope. Why do you think

(17:31):
this is.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
Well?

Speaker 3 (17:34):
I mean, some people are just trolls and like they're
gonna say that about anything. But I do think Ryan,
the online world has become much more unrealistic as to
what teams can do. I mean, let's just use UK
baseball for an example. We've really been bad our entire history. Honestly,

(17:54):
I mean we've been There's no doubt. Minjion's the most
success successful baseball coach Kentucky he's ever had. He's been
to the Super Regionals three times. He's been to the
College World Series once. We had never been to the
College World Series, Ryan, how many times have we been
to the Super Regional before Miggeo?

Speaker 5 (18:12):
They just one? Yeah, one, maybe two?

Speaker 4 (18:14):
One one or two times?

Speaker 7 (18:16):
In his one the SEC.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
Yeah, we won the SEC, which is, you know, almost
as hard as winning the whole thing.

Speaker 4 (18:22):
Now.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
I don't know what people, let's be real about what
Kentucky baseball is even now. I mean of the sixteen
schools in the SEC, would you say our support in
terms of attendance, et cetera Ryan in the SEC? Are
we is Missouri the only team we're ahead of probably

(18:46):
in that regard?

Speaker 5 (18:47):
Probably? So, I mean baseball is a lot more important
than a lot of the other schools.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
That's I think it's probably more important to fourteen of
the school Yeah, yeah, sure, I mean even Vanderbilt has
substantially more support yep in in baseball. So I mean
you're looking at a coach who's probably now. I mean, look,
when we've been good, like last year, the fans get
on board. But if you're just talking about like regularly
following in it being a thing, we're probably fifteenth. We're

(19:16):
fifteenth or sixteenth maybe yeah, when it comes to history
because Missouri used to be good at baseball a long
time ago. So Drew, I you know, what do you
expect him to do?

Speaker 4 (19:28):
In some ways?

Speaker 3 (19:28):
Like he's created I can't remember what I went to
the one UK baseball series when we host who was
the coach then? Cohen many Many or was Menjion even
the coach when we played NC State.

Speaker 5 (19:42):
Here that Colin or Henderson Gary Henderson one of those
two guys.

Speaker 4 (19:46):
I think it was Cohen.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
I mean that was a long long time ago, and
besides that, Drew, I'm not sure I'd ever.

Speaker 4 (19:52):
Even been to a UK baseball game.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
So the fact that minjion has made this to where
it's even a topic, I think is amazing.

Speaker 7 (20:00):
I think that might even been Menjiones first year. The
when you went to over at I don't think I
think you got it.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
Sure if I'd ever been to a game before Minjio.

Speaker 7 (20:08):
Yeah, he got him started right away over there. I
think that's the one you went to when Cal was
therebody's cleaning up the bleachers.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
Yeah, that was the coach.

Speaker 7 (20:17):
Yeah, his first season. No, they're definitely places they've never
been for. And then won the SEC for the second time.
He's got the record for most wins in the year
went to Omaha. I guess you're allowed to a down
season and playing for a regional championship is still pretty respectful.
You finished better than Clemson the host. Heck, we were
on the bubble going into the selection shows, so you
at least played a little bit above your seat line.

(20:38):
It's just the I think most of the anger is
still being up five in the eighth and how it.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
Ended not the over season a down season, it would
have been like the best season.

Speaker 5 (20:47):
We ever had. Yeah, they made third year in a row,
the first time ever making the NC Tournament three.

Speaker 7 (20:54):
I guess me down from the past year, which was
a huge year. I know you can't hold that, Yeah,
that forever.

Speaker 4 (21:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:00):
I so I have to say I I almost have
no patience for the like state of the program people
after this. I understand being frustrated about the result of
the game and how it ended up happening.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
Who's up first? Shit, Bubba, Bubba? How are you? Bubba?

Speaker 8 (21:16):
Fine?

Speaker 6 (21:17):
Fine?

Speaker 8 (21:17):
Doing great? And I'm I'm like you, Matt, these people
that complained, it's the best up it Had it not
been for last year, this would have been the best
season in Kentucky baseball history. Uh but uh yeah, you
know they're going to complain regardless.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (21:34):
The coaching staff is there every day with them, and
they're gonna put the what they think is to put
them in the best position to win. So but my
reason for calling today is I got a trivia question
from BA for Baseball. Who through the first no hitter
for the University of Kentucky.

Speaker 3 (21:54):
You could say, you could say Shannon Sparky McGee or
something like that, like I have there is I would
have absolutely no idea.

Speaker 4 (22:04):
So tell me, so tell me the answer.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
I got a guess.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
Okay, right, man, Ryan has a guess. Go for it.

Speaker 5 (22:09):
Jim Host.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
No, wait a minute, hang on, just say he just
said Jim host because he because that's exactly right.

Speaker 4 (22:21):
He's scared of Jim Host. He guesses Jim Host for everything.

Speaker 6 (22:25):
Right.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Who's the first best rower in Kentucky history. Jim Hosst,
Jim hos Y ks Mark Trivi.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
What eight world leaders one's met together to end World
War Two?

Speaker 4 (22:36):
I think you had Jim Host. Rob Bromley. Okay, so
what is the answer.

Speaker 8 (22:42):
Okay, I've been friends with this guy after probably thirty years.

Speaker 4 (22:45):
I mean you got ten seconds to say his name.

Speaker 8 (22:49):
Tommy Bannon. Tommy Bann, good guy against Georgia State.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
There you go, Tommy Bannon getting a shout out of YR.
We'll take a break, be right back.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
TJ. Smith, personal injury attorney called TJ. He'll make them
pay now.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's
Matt Jones.

Speaker 4 (23:12):
Welcome back.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Yes, Kentucky Sports Radio and five nine two eight oh
twenty two eighty seven, UH Text Machine seven seven two
seven seven four five two five four. We had never
made Ryan the Super Regionals until Minio just for the record,
so never made it.

Speaker 5 (23:27):
Let me say, like you guys said, first time ever
to the College World Series, first time ever make the
nca Tournament three years in a row, and he did
it this year when I having only one starter returning.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
Yeah, we could have played LSU if we had been
able to win this, although I think even they did they.

Speaker 7 (23:41):
They lost a Little Rock they played tonight.

Speaker 4 (23:44):
Little Rock was.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
Like twenty like had a losing record going in the time.
So Little Rock still has a chance today.

Speaker 7 (23:49):
Right, Yeah, that's one of the six games tonight.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
LSU has not gone a Little past Little Rock, so
we'll see if they get to the UH to the
Super Regionals.

Speaker 4 (23:57):
I had Ryan john Wall on my.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
ESPN show yesterday, so you know, we're doing this thing
all summer guest the Wildcat where they just bring on
former Wildcats surprise me every week as to who they're
gonna get. And I thought Ryan john Wall was a
pretty good gif by my.

Speaker 5 (24:13):
Producers it's a really good gif.

Speaker 4 (24:15):
Yes, heck them again. So we had John wall on.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
You can listen to it if you go to the
Matt and Myron podcast you can listen. It's on our three.
Uh he comes on. It was a great interview wall Uh. Honestly,
I talked mostly about UK because if you could have
a national radio show, why wouldn't you just shan and
talk about UK basketball and the national radio show of course,

(24:39):
But in the conversation I thought he gave one piece
of news.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
He said that Mark Pope reached out.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
To him and asked his has asked him to come
to Lexington and play pick up and and work out
with the team, and he's gonna.

Speaker 4 (24:53):
Try to do that for a few days this summer.

Speaker 3 (24:55):
And then I later found out in some conversations later
in the day that Pope has done that with many
of the NBA guys, that they are basically hoping to
recreate what Cal here Cal had here before COVID. This
kind of ended after COVID, But before COVID, during the summers,
you would get a lot of these guys back in
the summer and they would play pick up. That happened

(25:17):
a lot in fourteen fifteen, sixteen seventeen, around those times,
and Pope apparently retrying to do it. And Wall said,
he's gonna come and play against you know, Jaylen Lowe
and all those guys this summer.

Speaker 4 (25:30):
That made me very happy Ryan to hear.

Speaker 3 (25:33):
And it's got to be great for the I mean,
think about for these players of John Wall their childhood,
the kid they watched playing as a player they watch
play as a kid comes up and plays with him.

Speaker 5 (25:44):
What a great recruiting tool it is too when you
come in for a visit and there's John Wall and out,
you know, scrimmaging with the guys, and maybe you know
Darren Fox out there shooting it up with some of
the god Devin Booker, I mean, just all the NBA
guys that have Kentucky connections. If Pope was able to
get them to come back, he absolutely should use at disadvantage,
especially in the recruiting world.

Speaker 3 (26:02):
And Wall also said, Drew what we heard Andrew Harrison say,
which is that he watched a ton of the games
last year. Again, which you know, my biggest worry with
Pope was will he be able to keep the connection
to those cow guys?

Speaker 4 (26:18):
Were they cow guys?

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Or like, would they kind of stay watching Kentucky And
it is clear the answer to that question has been
they will still be Kentucky guys no matter what.

Speaker 7 (26:30):
Definitely, And I was, like you, that was my biggest concern.
Cal marketed the program to have that NBA connection, and
Pope brings completely an entirely different approach than that. But
I love that he's maintained those relationships. He's popped over
to playoff games. We saw the picture with him and
Carl recently, the picture with him and Rob Dillingham. It's
good to know that there wasn't any kind of friction
in the changing in the eras there because it could

(26:51):
have gone the other way. Those guys could have just
ridden with Cal and not like the move. But most
of them have been very supportive.

Speaker 4 (26:57):
Very supportive.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
So very cool that Wall will be back. And I
kind of want to be at those pickup games when
you was Shannon watched the I mean, I'd like the
Jalen Lowe versus John Wall. I know Wall's not played
in a while, but I still think it would be fun.

Speaker 7 (27:13):
To watch Colin Chandler dunking on Wall. When's that video gonna?

Speaker 3 (27:17):
Yeah, take a guess how much money John Wall made
we found out yesterday in salary in his NBA career. Okay,
So I just want just think about in your mind
what you think John Wall made. Remember, John was very good.
I don't think he ever made.

Speaker 4 (27:33):
An All Star team. I think he was. I think
he was closed.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
I don't think he made an All Star team. Maybe
he made one, I'm not sure. But just take a guess, Ran,
how much do you think John Wall made in his
NBA career?

Speaker 5 (27:47):
Two hundred million?

Speaker 7 (27:48):
Okay, what do you think Drew? I heard, so I
know the answer.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Okay, I'm gonna say eighty million.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
Well add it up, two hundred and eighty million, eight million.
He made two hundred and eighty million dollars.

Speaker 5 (28:06):
Wow, not a bad life.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
And you know what's crazy is some of these dudes
playing right now will double or even trip.

Speaker 5 (28:15):
You're right, You're right.

Speaker 4 (28:17):
I mean it's insane.

Speaker 5 (28:19):
I do need to ask you one more question about
your Sunday show yesterday. Yes, I heard the Dufin Schmirtz segment.

Speaker 4 (28:24):
Yep, me too, So you heard it.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
I heard it. You were extra dufin Schmirtzy too. I
think during that segment it stood out a little more
than the John Wall. Honestly, it did well.

Speaker 4 (28:35):
What made it stand out?

Speaker 3 (28:36):
So we had the guy who does the voice of
Dupin Schmirtz. He and his partner were on why did
it stand down for you?

Speaker 5 (28:42):
Because I thought you were extra dufin Schmirtzy there for
a while.

Speaker 4 (28:47):
Tell me why you do it of us? You know
like that?

Speaker 3 (28:52):
Yes, yes, he only gave me a B plus though
on my impression, and I felt like Drew it was
worth more than a B plus.

Speaker 7 (28:59):
I have to say, I completely agree. I thought you
got robbed there. I really couldn't tell if they were
hitting a button from the cartoon or if that was
you doing it.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Well they did, I will say, if you listen to
that interview right, and they did play me saying it
versus him saying it back and back, and I felt
like it was almost exactly the same.

Speaker 4 (29:16):
To be honest with you.

Speaker 5 (29:18):
I thought it was dead on. I thought that when
the recording of it was definitely better. Absolutely well, it
was funny. That was a funny thingment.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
Yeah, they were.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
And and for my friend's kids, that's the coolest I've
ever been in their eyes, was having the Phineas and
Firm guys like, that's the only time they've ever cared
what I did.

Speaker 5 (29:36):
I didn't know they were going to bring it back.

Speaker 4 (29:39):
Yeah, why, I don't think it broke news.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
I think that's why they were on the show, was
promoting the fact that it was coming back.

Speaker 4 (29:45):
It wasn't like they.

Speaker 3 (29:45):
Just shit and they didn't decide during that interview to
say the show was going to be back Thursday. It
was like this the first time anybody's gonna find out
this Thursday.

Speaker 5 (29:56):
That's how they were coming back.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
If it's for I doesn't know, then I yes, it's
breaking news. Damn, that's exactly right. Who's next, Chris, Chris?

Speaker 4 (30:04):
Go ahead? Chris?

Speaker 6 (30:07):
First time? Long time?

Speaker 5 (30:08):
Who?

Speaker 4 (30:08):
Why? Good? How are you go ahead?

Speaker 6 (30:12):
Good? Hey, you were talking earlier about playing baseball all
day long? Well, this story will be particular interest to Drew.
Back about nineteen seventy, the Lofayette Generals played the Madisonville
Maroons in the State Baseball Tournament.

Speaker 7 (30:29):
Ooh okay.

Speaker 6 (30:30):
After after seven innings, the scores tied five to five.
They go extras. I don't remember what extra inning it was,
but Lafayette goes up ten to five. Madisonville comes back
scores five, it's ten to ten. WHOA. Finally, in the
bottom of the twenty second innings, WHOA. Twenty second inning,

(30:58):
Madisonville scores the winning to win eleven to ten.

Speaker 5 (31:02):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (31:02):
So this was what year, sir? Nineteen seventy one.

Speaker 6 (31:07):
Nineteen seventy seventy one, right about in there.

Speaker 4 (31:10):
Okay, did you play in the game? Like, what made
you remember this?

Speaker 6 (31:15):
Well, my brother was on Lafayette's team at the time,
and I remember skipping junior I skipped school during junior
high to go to the game over at Cliff Hagen Stadium.

Speaker 3 (31:26):
So nineteen seventy seventy one, twenty two innings do we think,
does Corey Price know? The answer is that the longest
high school game in Kentucky history.

Speaker 4 (31:34):
I would think it's at least in contention.

Speaker 3 (31:37):
I think if it was longer than that shit and
they had just told people to go home, if it
wasn't in the state tournament, I feel like that would
make well.

Speaker 4 (31:43):
I appreciate the call. That's nineteen seven.

Speaker 6 (31:46):
Wait wait, wait, man, well ahead, man, Matt, all.

Speaker 4 (31:48):
Right, I can't wait. It's not a novel. I gotta
just go quick.

Speaker 6 (31:51):
No, all right. Lafayette's pitcher Vic Travis through nineteen and
two thirds innings that day.

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Arms were built different back then they were, and.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
He never was able to walk again after that. All right, well,
thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (32:08):
He cannot even pick up his groceries now, unfortunately.

Speaker 4 (32:12):
Wow, nineteen and two.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
I like how it's two thirds though, but they decided,
after they decided, you know what.

Speaker 4 (32:18):
We can't finish the twentieth. We need to go ahead
and bring in for this one.

Speaker 7 (32:22):
Yeah, his arm fell off mid game. Yeah, Max, Well,
as long as it takes, we'll get it done. Congratulations,
didn't make All Star teams? Wall made Uh, well, Marco,
he made five.

Speaker 4 (32:34):
Yeah, it was a lot different than zero. Don't tell,
don't tell, John, I got that wrong. Five's a lot okay,
all right.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
That's the only time Mario's ever entered a fact check
on me, So I knew he was probably not happy.
Summer's almost ready, so enjoy your favorite outdoor activities without
pain or stiffness. Go to Court Physical Therapy that's ko
RT dot com to help you get you moving again.
No medications, no injections, no surch just helping you feel better.
Let's say you pitched nineteen and two thirds court dot

(33:04):
Com will get you back to where you're ready to
go for the night game the next night. It's KRT
dot com, COURTDAL dot com the power of physical therapy
for both Lafayette and Madisonville.

Speaker 4 (33:16):
We'll take a break and be right back. It's Kentucky
Sports Radio. Welcome back.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
It is Kentucky Sports Radio. You know chin facts are
optional here. You know that, like we don't. I mean,
we may say Wall didn't make it All Star team,
but he made five.

Speaker 4 (33:31):
We also may have.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
A caller who called and said, what did they say
the person's name was that threw the first no hitter
in UK history?

Speaker 4 (33:37):
What was his name?

Speaker 7 (33:38):
Tom Bannon?

Speaker 4 (33:39):
Well, it was not Tom Bannon.

Speaker 3 (33:42):
It was Jerry Sharp who threw a no hitter in
nineteen fifty nine. Nineteen fifty nine, he threw a no
hitter against Tennessee. I'm gonna read you the first paragraph
of the story. Okay, okay, Sharp posted his third width
of the season.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
It's no defeats.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
The Brooklyn, Mississippi lad got stronger as the game progressed,
fanning the last six vall batter but batters he faced.
I love that he called him a lad drew that's
the and the Harold Leader used to call the UK
baseball players lads. That was That was a gentlemanly time.

Speaker 7 (34:20):
Yeah, back before bloggers ruined journalism. Some of the old
game reports. I've gone back in red old Kentucky basketball stories.
They write the game recap so different than what we
have now. Yes, so congratulations to Mike Howell, who had
the second no hitter at UK, pushing Tom Bannon further
down the list.

Speaker 4 (34:37):
So Tom Bannon was third.

Speaker 3 (34:39):
You know, the next thing we're gonna find out is
tom Bannon didn't even throw a note or else. There
wasn't even a person named Tom Bannon. It was Well,
so Jerry Sharp first, who was second? Miall Cow and
then uh Jerry tom Bannon allegedly third, although we do
not have proof yet of him being five nine two

(35:01):
eight h twenty two eighty seven one person rights. Matt,
I agree with you about having Wall in those guys back.

Speaker 4 (35:10):
But do you think the current players even know who
John Wall is?

Speaker 3 (35:14):
Of course they do, although I will note if you
were Jasper Johnson when John Wall played at Kentucky, you
were three years old.

Speaker 4 (35:27):
Three.

Speaker 5 (35:28):
Well, that's why a lot of the guys now they're
talking about their favorite players that they grew up watching
were Devin Booker.

Speaker 4 (35:34):
Three years old.

Speaker 7 (35:36):
Everyone knows who he is now, but we're getting into
dangerous territory where there might be a recruit in a
few years. Not know, it's getting close.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Yeah, I mean they would remember him from his NBA days, right,
that's what they they were they but they wouldn't remember
him from his UK days. You're exactly right, But they
would remember him from his uh from his NBA days, Drew,
how did you hear or did you go?

Speaker 4 (36:00):
Like? How did railbird go there?

Speaker 3 (36:03):
I mean I heard that there was a massive traffic
issue last night with people getting out, but just in general,
did you hear it went?

Speaker 4 (36:11):
Well?

Speaker 7 (36:12):
I did not go, but I feel like I was
there just based on social media. I even, like you know,
searched for it and just saw a bunch of random
videos of pictures. Look like they had a great crowd.
Jelly roll last night, seemed to have a lot of
fire on stage. Lots of fire what do you mean?
Five just like actual flames on on stage looked pretty cool.
So it looks like he had a big production. But overall,

(36:34):
I don't know if it was the turnout of years
past obviously final numbers on that, but you know, they
did the aerial photo and it looked like an another
good crowd out there.

Speaker 4 (36:41):
Yeah, it looked like they had a lot of people.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
I think, you know, just by looking at the parking
we had at the bar Sunday, we basically filled up
in pre sales for Sunday. Saturday got some, it was
not totally full, which makes me think there was a
bigger crowd Ryan on Sunday than Saturday. You know, they
still have an issue over there with parking though. I mean,

(37:05):
like they just don't have places for people to park.
You know, we we we have a lot, but again
if you don't know before a lot of out of
town people don't even know to do that. But you know,
there were people. I was hearing stories of people parking
like at the mall at Fayette Mall and walking all
the way to Real. I mean that's like a crazy walk.
But if you just think about it, if you don't,

(37:26):
there just aren't a lot of places honestly over there
to to park.

Speaker 5 (37:30):
Yeah, there were people up and down for sales road
just parking like in the McDonald's and walking over. So
I'm sure it was that way everywhere. I tried to
stay away as far as I could. But you know,
my son worked it and he's like he told me.
He said it was a massive crowd there both days.

Speaker 4 (37:43):
Well good.

Speaker 7 (37:43):
You know Fayott Mall has paid parking. Now, by the way,
what do you.

Speaker 5 (37:47):
Mean Fayett Mall has paid.

Speaker 4 (37:48):
Yeah, there's like.

Speaker 7 (37:49):
QR codes to pay to park just in the it's
only the front few spots. It's VIP parking.

Speaker 4 (37:54):
Oh I've seen that. Yeah, that's where coming to thing.

Speaker 7 (37:57):
I noticed, Like, who's gonna pay to park at Fayed Mall?
But it's out there.

Speaker 4 (38:00):
It's like with your VIP park.

Speaker 3 (38:03):
And let's say it's Christmas season and it's either you
like you know back in the day you used to
be at Faitt Mall during Christmas, you might not even
find a place to park.

Speaker 4 (38:13):
You wouldn't VIP park for five dollars.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
No, I'd rather walk a half a mile. And it's
not because I can't afford it. It's just the principle
of it. Like, if you've got free parking, and I
think a mall should have free parking, then why wouldn't
you just use that? You've probably paid the five dollars
I'm sure.

Speaker 4 (38:28):
Right, No, No, I'm with you. There's a principle to it. Yeah,
there's a print. There are certain.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
Things that I won't pay, like like I mean like
parking tickets, you know.

Speaker 4 (38:42):
To me, just there's a principle.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
That's a little different principle.

Speaker 4 (38:46):
Yeah, that's a different principle. You know.

Speaker 3 (38:49):
It's weird because you're right, like I would pay a
lot to park.

Speaker 5 (38:53):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (38:54):
That's a psychological thing. So if there's a lot for
a game and it says it costs twenty five dollars
to for the game, I don't love it, but I'll
do it. But if it is a free parking lot,
and for whatever reasons it's not free, then in my
mind I'm mad about that. And they shan't. It'll get nothing,
you know.

Speaker 4 (39:11):
Let's just say whatever.

Speaker 2 (39:12):
Let's just say hypothetically, you were in Ville, Colorado, and
there was one parking garage that charges one hundred dollars
a night, and there was one right next to it
that was free. I've seen you pay one hundred dollars
to go to the one that you actually have.

Speaker 3 (39:24):
That was because Ryan told me the only one there. No,
Drew told me the only one that existed was the
one that was one hundred dollars. I didn't know there
was a freewood next door. That's for Franklin's fault, that
is nowhere.

Speaker 4 (39:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (39:36):
Yeah, they just happened to have a freewood. And people
are like, who are the idiots that pay in one hundred.

Speaker 4 (39:40):
Dollars with me? Thanks to Drew?

Speaker 7 (39:42):
Can't have money?

Speaker 4 (39:43):
All right, capital Craig, Craig, what's up Andy? What's going on?

Speaker 9 (39:50):
First of all, I was, you know, fortunately to meet
Mark Mark Hope last week at Arlington, and then I
just wanted to call and say, like how crazy it
was to just like so random. I mean, if you
haven't for people, I haven't been there an enormous place
like hundred of acres and he's just there with this.

Speaker 3 (40:06):
So you were just walking across Arlington National Cemetery and
you're just like, look there's Mark Pope.

Speaker 9 (40:12):
Yeah no, I mean it was it was like the
wildest thing ever.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
Nobody around them.

Speaker 9 (40:16):
I'm by myself, I mean, you know, I've been there
for hours, Like you know, if I was anywhere else,
which I hadn't been all over the place, I wouldn't
have seen him. Like it was just it was just
nuts and like they're the nicest people. We're so lucky
to have them.

Speaker 3 (40:30):
They are the nice I mean, there's no doubt Mark
Pope is insanely nice. I completely agree with you, and
I've not seen him be anything but kind in public
to anyone, which is very hard for a person that
gets stopped as much as he does. I can't imagine
how often that has to be.

Speaker 9 (40:51):
Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm sure you know, he was
sort of pretending, but he genuinely seemed interested in talking
to me, which was you know, it just it's anyway,
the point I wanted to make though with you were
talking about Nick Mindione and Kentucky Baseball a little bit
earlier in their unconventional style. I think I think Mark

(41:11):
Stoops could take some lessons from Nick and in terms
of like not having a power program and doing things
a little.

Speaker 4 (41:17):
Bit well, they used to do that.

Speaker 3 (41:19):
You know, they used to do that, and Garry, I
hate to catch off because we're gonna have to go
to break, but I appreciate it. They used to do
that and then they kind of got away from that.
But to be fair, our fans kind of asked them
Ryan to go away from that, they're like, we want
to throw the ball more, et cetera. So you know
you're kind of damned if you do, damn if you don't.
Real quick rank the UK basketball coaches in terms of

(41:39):
niceness while they were at UK Ryan, Tubby one, Pope two, Gosh,
I go go in the opposite. I'm gonna go Pope one,
Tubby two, Joe Joeb three. I don't know about Rupp.
I don't know any about his personality. I would say

(42:01):
Cow four, Patino five. I'd say Rick Sutton five, Rick six,
Billy like that.

Speaker 4 (42:11):
Last.

Speaker 5 (42:12):
Billy has definitely last.

Speaker 3 (42:13):
Billy's definitely last, although he could be really nice sometimes,
but I ain't. Just overall, probably last. We'll take a
break come back out of number two.

Speaker 6 (42:22):
