Welcome to Hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by
Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
All right, welcome back our number two Kentucky Sports Radio
Ryan Leman, Drew Franklin, Shannon the Dude up at Fort
Thomas Highland's High School and Fort Thomas, Kentucky, sitting outside
Drew on the sidewalk in front of the school. There's
a little raining when we first got here, but the
sun has come out because it is September twenty second
and we're talking to the number twenty two man himself,
Tayden Lorenzen, son of Jared Lorenzen, also worn number twenty two.
(01:29):
It's man, I'm telling you, it's so cool for me
to see how you've grown up and not just be
this football guy, but to be a great young man.
You know, they said, we've known you since you were
a little guy. He always called you little man. You know,
little Man's got a tournament this weekend. Little Man's got
a football game this weekend. So I know he's super
(01:49):
proud when he sees the person you're becoming. I just
the football player, but the person you're becoming.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
Yeah, my main goal in life is to act exactly
like he did towards me, at least, because there's he
was always the most humble guy possible. He never said
anything bad unless I did something wrong. I think he
had a He evenly distributed his being humble and telling
(02:20):
people when he's right.
Speaker 5 (02:22):
So I don't know. I think being his son, I
have to live up to a lot. But I think again,
you feel that, Yeah, I do, But.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
I think as long as I be myself, I can
carry that on as much as possible.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
So do you feel that just because you're here at Highlands?
He was such a star here. He won number twenty two.
You know you're number twenty two. So I mean, do
you feel that every time you walk on that football
field out there?
Speaker 4 (02:47):
Yeah, it's definitely a feeling for sure. In the moment,
not so much, but like when I'm sitting here talking
to you guys that I start getting that feeling. In
the game, there's so much adrenaline and I can't think
about anything except for the game.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
But I want to hear more about this Hollins experience.
We kind of got up against a hard break there.
You were saying great things about the school here, and
then I had some friends text in that are local.
They're telling me, like people like the tailgate front yards
and like you it's not just in the stadium, the
whole town is pretty much shuts down for Friday nights.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Yeah, the whole town loves Friday night. It's actually right
over there in that parking lot is our tailgate parking lot,
and they walk into here from the games. They all
line up on the Broadway or the Avenue of Champions
and we walk down into the game. It's just it's
that feeling Friday night lace we're about to play a game,
and it gets everybody ready to play.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
And it's not just here. When you guys go on
the road, and like when your dad was playing, him
and Derek Smith were at the end of their prime, it
was like a traveling circus man. Every time they grow
into town. Everybody wanted to see those two guys play.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah, Like we traveled to Cooper and our fans, our
community is there immediately their gating there, they find a
place and our student section is is really good. It's
probably top five in the state for sure. Like how
we traveled to Boyle County also, they were all there.
(04:14):
That's two and a half hours away just for a
football game. And that's how much they love it here.
And that's the spirit we bring to Kentucky.
Speaker 7 (04:21):
Football.
Speaker 6 (04:21):
So what about some of your stuff, Like you know,
I got to know him so well with our football podcast.
Just about his pregame rituals and things. Do you have
like a like a pregame mill you stick to, or
any routine or any superstitions that that you could share
with us.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
I feel like every time I have a superstition, I
I get off of it anyway, So I just do
whatever until the game. I have no always pregame, this superstition,
none of that, and literally just get ready and go
play a game, just get locked in it.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Did you grow up living and dying with Kentucky like
he did? I mean he was living die with every
long after his career was over. He's living and dying
with every play. After they beat Florida, he called in
the post game show and teared up, started crying. He
was so happy they'd finally beat Florida. Are you that emotional?
Do you get into it that much?
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Not as much as he did, obviously, I don't think
anybody gets into it. But I'm definitely a UK fan
for sure. But there's there's a line between die hard
and the UK fan, and I don't know if I'm
gonna cross that line, but.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
There's definitely he crossed it. He absolutely crossed it. He
was die Hard all the way.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Do you feel a connection to the Giants since he
want to ring there? Do you do you support them?
I know it's a little different with them not being locally.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Yeah, if I see him on TV or something like that,
I'll root for him. But there's really not a team
that I'm die hard for, uh in the NFL at
least like actually college either.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
I don't really like die Hard.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Anybody, but yeah, I'm a UK fan and I do
like the Giants.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Do you ever get these Super Bowl ring out? I mean,
the dude's got a Super Bowl ring?
Speaker 5 (05:57):
Yeah, I've seen it.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
I've seen it a few times, but we keep it
locked away in safe because they don't trust me with it.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
I don't trust myself with it.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
We asked him that one time after he got it,
and what do you do with he goes man, I'm
not wearing that or out somewhere. I don't want to
lose im want somebody stealing. I'm got it locked up
safe where I know exactly where it is at all times.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
Yeah, that's it. I don't trust myself either.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
What about his state championship rings.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
I actually have seen one of his state championship rings.
We were out to dinner with one of his teammates
from my high school and he brought it out, and
that's the only time I've ever seen it.
Speaker 5 (06:28):
Yeah, they're pretty cool to see.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
They're very cool.
Speaker 6 (06:31):
Yes, some of your coaches and teachers here already told
us before you came down that it's not just the
look and the number. You have the personality and a
little bit of sense of humor too, because Jared would
always make us laugh. Are you kinda I hate say
cutting up in the locker room because you're serious, But
do you kind of have that big personality too around
your teammates?
Speaker 5 (06:48):
Definitely do. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
I have a lot of friends and we joke around
a lot, and I like to have a good time
with my friends. That's that's bigger than anything for me,
is having a good time with my friends outside of school,
getting away from everything, and they help a lot with
how I act in the real world.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
You know, we mentioned you watch his his mixtape all
the time. What's what's your favorite play that he did,
Because there's there's so many, what's the one that you
think is your favorite? Play.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I know everybody wants Finns say the behind the back
through or behind the head throw against Georgia. Georgia, My
favorite play is probably when they were playing Louisville and
he had like a forty something yard run.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
You know, that was his first snap from scrimmage.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
That's it was his first snap and.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
He threw He threw the ball up in the air
if they tackled me. Yeah, dude, I got goosebumps right
now when you're saying that.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
It's either that one or I think it was maybe
against Mississippi State. He was running left and he ran
out of bounds and like did this safe thing?
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Yeah, that was pretty cool too.
Speaker 6 (07:52):
Or where the hell y'all going? You'll miss a hell
of a game when everyone's leaping and going to the
big overtimes. We keep focusing on him and you have
a lot of football left to play. But you have
a favorite highlight. I've already seen a few of this
year online. So I do you have a favorite moment
of yours or a play that, even if it's middle school,
is there is there something that stands out where you
were having a lot of fun out there. Any over
the head throws from you.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
No, no, not yet.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
Your coach got a reaction on that behind you there.
I don't think he's ready for.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Those favorite play ever or favorite play this year either one.
Speaker 6 (08:21):
Just a play that stands out where you thought, you.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
Know, okay, I'll get My favorite play ever is.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
The Northern Kentucky Football League Championship against the Bandits. And
I roll right and I'm throwing it to my running back,
but I'm getting tackled.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
And he breaks a few tackles. I completed the pass.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
He ran forty yards for a touchdown, and my dad,
first time I ever seen my dad run ever. He
ran off the he ran onto the field and like
gave me a chest bump and I fell on my.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
Back and it was it was. It was a good memory.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
So do they does? Does coach firebackers? He lets you
throw the ball. You just run the ball all the time.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
He lets me throw it. But I think the team succeeds.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
And if we're running it, and then if we're running
it at every play and we're not getting stopped, I
think we're just gonna keep running the ball until they
stop it.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Because you were a quarterback a lot growing up.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
Yeah, yeah, I don't know I've always had an arm,
but I think when I run the ball, I don't know,
it's just like it's worked and we haven't changed anything,
and there's no reason too if it's working.
Speaker 6 (09:31):
So what I've seen, if you running the ball, you
see more of the I'm gonna run through you type
than it's just trying.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
I'm definitely not gonna run around anybody.
Speaker 6 (09:41):
Your goal on run against Douglas and many others I've
seen online to like all Dad, it took several people
to try to bring you down.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Yeah, I'm not again, I'm definitely not running around anybody.
So it's either a steph arm or I'm gonna run
through you. That's all I can try and do.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
What do you do? Do you score touch that you get
a touchdown dance celebration.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
The first time I've ever done a touchdown dance was
my first touchdown against Ryle and I'll probably never do
one again. But a bunch of people were telling me
to do it because it was one of these TikTok
things or whatever. Yeah, I did it just to make
her right, and that was it.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
I was actually about to ask a question about Derek Smith,
who just walked up yeah. I mean he and Jared were,
you know, hand in hand coming up through here. Do
you have like a version of a Derek? Do you
have like a childhood friend? We are just playing every sport.
It sounds like you're proper. You might have ten of them,
not when a name drop them, But is there do
you have some special connections like that one?
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Probably his nephew Aiden Duncan is up there for sure.
Me and Gabe Williams have a pretty good connection on the.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
Field, probably.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
The third woman probably be Cal Harris.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
He's number thirteen and was a receiver. We've always been
best friends. But not to name job, but those are
those are my three really good friends. Chase Jacob also,
but there's so many I don't want to start naming them.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
So well, listen, man, whether you know it or not,
you got an entire state pulling for you, all the
big blue nation watching you, pulling for you, wishing you
nothing but the best on the football field and in life.
So I hope, I hope you at some point you
can feel the love that they have for you because
they loved your dad.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Yeah, it's not Having that feeling on me just means
the world to me. And all I can do is
make me happy and embrace it because it's not going
to go away until I die. So it's great having
the state behind me and where like wherever I go
(11:43):
in the States behind me.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
It's great.
Speaker 6 (11:47):
And coach, if we could maybe you get up big
in a game, can we draw it could be on
the goal line. Maybe let him throw a left handed touchdown.
It doesn't have to go. If we're just a couple
of yards. Maybe just set one up.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
There was a game.
Speaker 6 (12:00):
You have to on left handed?
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Are there we go? No doubt you are Jared orinchin Son.
There's there's something magical about that name and that number
on the back of the Highland jersey, and dude, we're
proud of you. Keep grinding, keep keep playing good, and
we'll keep an eye on you. And you got great
things ahead of you, I know down the road. So
thank you so much, Thank you, brother, appreciate you. All right,

Ryan, We just finished an interview with Tatan and Lorenz
and we hadn't let him go. It's lunchtime. Yeah, the
boy didn't want to miss lunchtime. That's right, growing teenage.
Speaker 6 (13:35):
Boy, that's right. Any of you each class. Jared never missed.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Class, so joined us now. Guy walked up while we're
doing the interview. We said, when Jared Lorenzen and Derek
Smith we're here at Fort Thomas Higlands, it was must
see football, must see basketball. You guys are like a
traveling road show, Derek. Derek Smith joins us now. But
like I told Tayton, there's something magical about that name
Lorenzen and that number twenty two up here at four
(14:00):
Thomas Highlands, no.
Speaker 7 (14:01):
Question about it. You know again, I was here for
the game Friday night, and my nephew plays on the
team as well, so I try to come back for
some games and geez, it's just it's amazing to watch
him play and see you know, I just remember growing
up again. Jared and I grew up from literally when
we were like five years old, playing football, baseball, basketball
together and so I got up close and personal look
(14:24):
at Jared and everything that he did. And so then
I'm standing in the stands watching, you know, in every
his mannerisms, everything is just a replica of Jared. When
he gets tired, he holds his hands the same way
on his hips, you know, and Jared would be tired.
The ball was in his hands for every play. Half
of his touchdowns, he didn't even celebrate, you know what
I mean, because he was working so hard. And that
(14:46):
happened Friday night. I mean, I'm looking at my dad
and I'm like, he didn't even celebrate the touchdown because
it's just he's a workhorse, you know, he understands what
the assignment is and he's just he's so much like
his father. It's crazy, and it really is. It's a
blessing for me, and I have a lot of gratitude
to kind of experience that whole thing and then be
able to come back here for the game and watch
him do it.
Speaker 6 (15:06):
Saying about the hands on the hip, I can picture
him doing that too.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (15:10):
We asked Tadan this and I'm sure you've known Tayduan
Brice as he was born, I assume, but was there
a moment when he was young, before you got to
where you're just used to seeing a little Jared out
there where you're like, wait a minute, this is a
spitting image of his dad.
Speaker 7 (15:21):
Yeah, there pee wee football. Jared and I had a
golf outing once and he came to pick me up.
We were playing in a Highlands basketball golf outing. He
came to pick me up and we came. We came
to the game first for a little bit before we
ran out, and and yeah, I mean at that moment, I.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Was just like, oh my god, this guy is geez Louise.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
I mean, it was just but it's it's it just
makes sense, you know. I mean, you know, I would
say Jared, he would say, there was this god given
ability that I was given, you know, and I'm just
glad that I was able to go out and do
these things. And I think it's been passed to Tayden,
no question about it.
Speaker 8 (15:57):
You know.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
He kind of talked about he feels that he feels
that Lorenzen mystique even when he puts on that jersey.
Speaker 7 (16:05):
Oh absolutely, I mean look at this, right, I mean
he's just you know, with Jared and I didn't have
KSR come up into the radio stations with us. So
you know, it's like his father laid the ground work,
and his father did all this work and did so
many great stuff in the community and Fort Thomas and
in Kentucky, and so I think it's only appropriate that
Tayden gets to kind of swim in those riches a
(16:27):
little bit, you know, because that's what you do for
as a parent, right you want to set something up
and hand it off to your child and allow them
to flourish. And I think that's what he's doing. So
you know, I think he'd be very thankful for that.
Speaker 6 (16:38):
We're focusing a lot on Jared, but you know, you
had quite the athletic career right beside him. Just so
we here at Highlands, same thing I said to Tayduan.
But now Holland's is kind of getting back considered a
top ten and maybe top five in some places around
the state, trying to get back to that winning tradition
and get some trophies. Do you feel some pride, especially
with you having a nephew on the team, that it's
got your nephew, Taydan, and then kind of trying to
(17:00):
get Hollands back to where it.
Speaker 7 (17:02):
Was absolutely all the old guys, all the old teammates.
We all came Friday night and we were hanging out
watching and you know, it was the atmosphere. Everything just
sort of took us back, you know, and god, I
can't believe it was twenty five years. Sometimes I have
a hard time dealing with that. But yes, you know,
we're we're always supportive of anything we can do for
(17:24):
Highlands and for the community here and obviously for the program,
and we want football and basketball. You know, my nephew
played on the state championship basketball team. So my nephew,
now Aiden is a senior right now. His older brother Austin,
was a member of the state championship basketball team. So
you know, the guys were all down and rub we
went down there, and you know, so we were like,
(17:44):
you guys took away our mantle of the best. We
still feel like we might be the best Highlands football
team ever, but I don't think we can say we're
the best Islands basketball team ether because we won step
short of that state champion.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
You guys get the semifinals of the finals.
Speaker 7 (17:58):
We lost to the We lost in the finals. I
saw sophomore year to Louis Boe Eastern and then Scott
County beat us in an epic final four game, semifinal
game my junior year, and then my senior year we
got upset in the first round.
Speaker 6 (18:12):
We were in a tour of the Hall of Fame
there until your point. I even took this photo of
you and Jared have your jerseys and Rosston and Meltner
Fields have your jerseys framed in the basketball Jim. But
the boys state champion banner is much bigger.
Speaker 7 (18:26):
They're pretty proud of that, rightfully, so rightfully, so yeah,
I think our best banner up there was just ninth region,
the ninth Reagion champions. You know, we we wore that honor,
but yeah, we you know what, And by the way,
that night was amazing. I was honored when Joe's parents
or when Jared's parents asked me to give the speech
(18:46):
for Jared for that night on the Hall of Fame,
you know. And it was probably the hardest thing I've
ever done. You know, it was still sort of raw
in the moment, but I'm really glad I did it.
At first, I'm like, I don't think I can do it.
And then when I did it, I'm like, I'm glad
I did that, you know, because just like I said,
you you know, here we are twenty five years and
I think back all the time. I'm like, man, it
was really the glory days for us, you know, God,
(19:08):
we we just we lived in the moment and we
were able to do so many great things. And you know,
a lot and everybody thinks about us with football and basketball,
but we had a lot of fun playing baseball too.
We were really good at baseball. We decided our junior
year not to play baseball, and the baseball coach here
just about wanted to fight us. I never will forget that,
but but we just, you know, it was just such
(19:29):
an amazing journey through all that stuff. And like I said,
I just you know, I set up in the stands,
I'm here right now, and I just look back with
gratitude of just being able to be a part of
it and get to know Jared and be his friend
for so long. And you know, now I get to
see his son do the same thing, and so hopefully
one day I'll see my son do the same thing.
You know.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
So you know, when you guys, I said this earlier,
when you were all you and Jared were playing. You'd
go on the road. Place was packed. You were like
a traveling road show. Everybody wanted to come see Jared
Learning and Derek Smith play football, basketball, whatever it was.
And I tried to tell that to Tait, and I said,
you don't understand the entire state, Big Blue Nation got
your back. They they love you because of what your dad,
(20:10):
the joy he brought them. And Taytan said, he kind
of understands him, But do you think he fully grasp
the love that this state has for the Lorenzen name?
Speaker 7 (20:19):
You know, I are you able to do that at seventeen?
Speaker 5 (20:22):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 7 (20:23):
I think you you probably start to get get an
understanding of the moment and the gravity of it all.
But I also think, like he's just got to be
a kid. He's got to be seventeen years old, and
he's got to have fun with his with his teammates.
He's got to be able to to be Tayden, you know.
And I think he wears the badge for, you know,
his father's legacy really well. But I also would just say,
(20:44):
you know, like I think he really I think it's
really important probably for him to make his own legacy,
you know, and for him to do a good point
good point, and so I think it's really a mixture
of both for me with taydan Is, you know, I
mean it's a spitting image, you know, when he puts
his pats on it and he goes out and play,
like I said, his mannerisms. I'm just I'm like, I'm
watching Jared all over again. And but you know, he's
(21:06):
creating his own aura, and I think that's gonna be
a traveling road show. It doesn't help that his father
laid the groundwork. Yes, I do believe that if he
wasn't Jared's son, he'd still have a road show because
he's that good.
Speaker 6 (21:21):
So you and Jared obviously went on to Kentucky together.
I assume you're keeping up the teams. Talk a little
current ball, how we feel.
Speaker 7 (21:27):
I got I was there last weekend. I was there
in the Old Miss game. I mean so two weeks ago. Yeah,
I you know, I think they're doing great. You know,
as a former player, I see things and I'm just like,
oh my god, you know, just line up sometimes right
in the first half and yeah, and so you know,
there are times where I get a little frustrated as
(21:49):
a former player because you remember those things and you
remember how important it was, you know, and then when
when it kind of goes the other way. But then
I'm like the fan comes right back into me, you know,
and they do something really well, and I'm cellible, reading
like everybody else, you know, and I'm like, this is
how it felt when they watched us. Funny, you know,
but yeah, I think the South Carolina game is going
to be so important. It is just crucial. There's no
(22:10):
reason why we can't win that game, no reason.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
You gotta love how they're throwing to the tight end
more now.
Speaker 7 (22:15):
Oh yeah, yes, you know. Willie Rodriguez is a coup.
By the way, I said he was from Highlands.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
No, it's a tech machine, lit up. He is not
from Islands. He is from Covington, Catholic.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
I don't think we're going to get you out here
a lot saying that.
Speaker 7 (22:28):
Yeah, yeah, Well, so the ad at at coven and
Kathleic is a friend of mine, and so we were
on a business trip once and so I got to
talk to to Willie and just congratulated him on, you know,
committing to Kentucky and is a former tight end. I
was like, man, you know, it's just special to see
great tight ends keep keep going at Kentucky. So yeah,
I mean, you know, I think, like I said, I
(22:51):
I just I don't see how you know, we cannot
be a little bit more competitive this year. I think
the Old Miss game was tough, but again, I would
have thought that tou Lane would have given Old Miss
a little bit better of a run, and they didn't.
So you know, I'm talking to a buddy of mine
and I'm like, man, maybe we are better than I thought.
You know, like, I mean, you kind of want to
think like not. But then I'm like, I think we
(23:12):
are as good as these guys. I think we should
be able to win these games. But it just and
this stuff, it just comes down to doing the things right. Dude.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Appreciate you. Derek Smith, Highland's Hall of Famer. We righte
back more for Fort Thomas Hollands High School and we
come back.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
TJ Smith personal injury attorney.
Speaker 5 (23:26):
Call TJ.
Speaker 6 (23:27):
He'll make them pay now.
Speaker 3 (23:29):

Mls A two five to nine equalsy lender in the
molest consumer access dot Org. The market, the mortgage industry
is kind of shifting a little bit. Rates went down
a little bit, but uh, I hope that reflects are
more sales. Still, the inventory is down, so it's kind
of a tough market all around. I thought to buy
(24:15):
a good time to buy now. Since MAT's not here,
we do need to carry the Reds banner, I guess
for him. Somehow, Shannon, the Reds have got themselves right
in the thick of the wild card race, swept the Cubs. Well,
the Mets have completely fallen apart and now going into
the final games and see whether five or six games left.
(24:35):
I think there's six seams games.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
The Reds have the Pirates at home for three and
then on the road with Milwaukee, and then the Mets
have the Cubs, who the Reds just swept, and I
think in I think it's at Miami to finish up
for the Mets. Wow, So anything could happen here, But.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
As if it ended right now, they're in because they've
got the tiebreaker with the Mets and the Marlin. They
own the tiebreaker with both of them.
Speaker 6 (24:59):
Is that the super good I remember, you can go
back and play the tape when they did that West
Coast swing. He's wow, it's over.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
We're the worst.
Speaker 6 (25:07):
It's over, boys, and they still worn't that far behind.
I knew they were going to turn it around the
moment he got South Africa. And I've actually because of
the NFL show. We did that last night. Everyone subscribed
to NFL cover zero. Yes, a new episode drop this morning,
but you know I was with Matt through through the
screen for a couple hours last night. You know, we
actually have show prep on that, so we'll good together
(25:28):
an hour before talk over. But in doing that, I've
gotten to talk to Matt a lot about a South
Africa trip and a He is very excited about the Reds.
He even said he might try to call in today
to brag to the show. However, the Safari starts today,
it does Today's the big day. My man's a little
nervous about repelling with his non women, but he also
in this I'm not spoiling any stories here. He tells
(25:50):
the full story on the NFL podcast. But Matt is
down there without a phone.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
I saw that. That's got to be the worst thing
for that kid. Think possible he'll be out there without
a phone.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
Leave aside just the fact that Matt's phone is glued
to his hand. I would not want to be in
another country alone.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Without a phone, no access to anybody.
Speaker 6 (26:10):
Yeah, he said, it's just too expensive to get one there,
so he's gonna handle it when he gets back. He's like,
you can go have a nice dinner here for four dollars,
but an iPhone there are like three times there. So
he's just he's I think he's gonna try to find
a repair shop. Wouldn't have much luck. But he's starting
his Safari with the non random women today. The Reds
are on fire and he doesn't have his cell phone.
That man has to be losing his mind.
Speaker 2 (26:30):
How did he communicate with you guys? How do you
do the podcast? Last night?
Speaker 6 (26:33):
I Heeart sending an iPad that's rigged up for us
to do our show. So I don't even know how
he got that one text out to me and Mario,
but we basically yeah, I guess, so yeah through the iPad,
but uh uh, you know, we're just we're talking to
him with the screen. But he's like, I guess he
saw some bamboos just walking around. I guess there's the city.
They just walk on sidewalks like humans. And he's telling
(26:55):
me about it. He's like, I wanted to get a video,
but I'm just walking around out a phone. If he
Wan needs a rid down the front, De's gonna has
to call it, call it cab. But he tells the
story of how that happened on the show and a
few others. But I feel like I'm I'm still in
mad time. Everybody just wondering where he is and he's gone,
and I got to talk to him for several hours
last night.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
I feel of all the people in the world that
can't handle life without a telephone, it's Matt Jones.
Speaker 6 (27:18):
Yeah, and it'd be difficult just being down there and
you're alone. Different area, but uh, he was having fun.
He said that the non women he had met them
that day. I think there was a welcome party. He said,
they're they're pretty quiet, but they're locked in. And today
he starts repelling and playing Jumanji and all the things
he's gonna do.
Speaker 2 (27:34):
Well, good luck to him. You guys got your your covers.
You what podcast came out? Was it this morning?
Speaker 6 (27:41):
Yeah? They do some post stuff. It's it's I don't
know the exact time it went up, but it's up.
It's it is up now. So if it's not, then
we have problems. But it's it's supposed to be up.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
To go check it out, all right? Eight five, nine,
two to eighty seven. That's the Clark's Publish Out phone
number if you want to call and get on board.
I do need to ask you, guys one question. I
was on an air airplane ride out there in the
brass going back. I do have a question about airplane etiquette.
Speaker 6 (28:02):
Oh, this is one of my favorite topics.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
See we've talked about cure with babies crying and things,
but I have a legit serious question about airplane etiquette.
I'm in the middle seat. Sorry, I'm in between two guys.
One guy's probably in seventies, the other guy's probably late twenties.
They hook onto the Wi Fi and American isline. You
gook on the Wi Fi and they're on their phone
(28:25):
non stop, I mean, both of them non stop. Is
it bad form or is it rude for me to
take a peek? Like, what the heck are they doing
on their phone? Like their phone? I'm sitting right beside him.
Speaker 5 (28:38):
Is that.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
An unwritten rule? You can't look at what the other
dude's doing on his phone?
Speaker 6 (28:43):
Oh, that's fine. I mean, are you like leaning over
his shoulder and like getting in his photo album? Or
are you just glancing?
Speaker 2 (28:49):
It's it's at night time, so the phone is lit up,
of course, and I can easily see what he's doing.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
Yeah, I think. I mean, let's all admit we are
nosy people, even if we don't want to be. We
can't help ourselves, especially if you're on a plane. You're
locked in, You're just sitting there. You can only watch
that little map of where you are with the plane
going by for so long. So, of course, if someone's
got their phones out, I mean, maybe don't read every
text they're sending, or go through their private stuff if
you want to do whatever. But I know, I don't
think there's anything wrong with that.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
Well, the seventy year old dude is wheeling and dealing
Shanning crystals and painted rocks like you know, gem stones,
and he's selling them on eBay and he's got like
fifty of them and he's telling and Shannon, there were
like one hundred and twenty dollars for a rock.
Speaker 3 (29:33):
Oh, I know, I've bought a lot of those one
hundred and twenty dollars rocks. Good for him that you
know there's a market for that and people actually willing
to pay for it.
Speaker 6 (29:40):
Did you ever get the urge to be like, hey man,
I couldn't help, but notice, you know, can I buy
that bright light? Well, ask about it? Maybe getting the
rock business.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
I felt like it was rude, like I shouldn't be
spying on his business.
Speaker 7 (29:49):
Now.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
The other guy on the other side, the young guy,
he's on his phone NonStop and he's he looks kind
of like Billy, but you can tell you he's nervous.
He's touching his face he's doing his hair, he's moving around.
He's on DraftKings.
Speaker 6 (30:01):
Yeah, the crown is yours, and he is.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Going through all the late football games and just living
and dying with everything. You could tell I was watching
he would, you know, go from game to game, live
bet during the game. I mean he was, he was,
he was? He did you try eight hundred gambler?
Speaker 6 (30:17):
See see, I would have made the best friend. I
have this thing. My wife makes fun of me all
the time. I'll go to the airport and I leave
with five new friends that are met at the bar
on the flight. If I'd been in the seat and
the guy next me, I was on DraftKings, We're talking
the whole flight and betting together.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
He was. He was way into it. I mean like
way into it.
Speaker 6 (30:35):
Coming back from uh Tahoe, I said, by this guy,
and I've never seen thing like it. It was a
four hour flight. The Wi Fi wasn't working, but he
had the his phone so close to his face and
instead of scrolling with his fingers, he scrolled with his nose. No,
he didn't, and he didn't have any problems, like it
wasn't like a you know, any kind of handicap issue
because he's doing everything else, but he he had he
it was so close to his face. I couldn't even
(30:57):
believe he could read it. I'm like, you were going
to kill your eyeballs. But he would, you know, go
down the page with his nose. And I've never seen anything.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
Like that to keep you from looking at what he's looking.
Speaker 6 (31:05):
Non know, I was. He was kind of the caddy
corner to me a little bit. But I don't know.
I have you ever seen someone scroll through Twitter with
their nose?
Speaker 5 (31:12):
No?
Speaker 6 (31:13):
But no answer your point. That's I mean, there's some
things that are debatable. I know people argue over can
you put your seat back? And you know, fighting over
arm wress. That's those are some hot topics at airports.
But just glancing over the phone, we're all nosed.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
I felt like I'm peeping, Tom, I'm peeping in what
they're looking at and what they're doing on their phone.
But it was what are you I'm stuck in the
middle on there, it's right there in front of me.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I
would have struck up a conversation. You mentioned the other one.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
I'm in the middle seat, don't the armrest kind of
I should have first right refusal on the army. I'm
in the middle seat.
Speaker 6 (31:45):
I try to work with people on that one, but
sometimes they just think it's there and you gotta let
them know. You don't say anything, but you do an
aggressive I'm here too, with your elbow or your knee
or whatever it is, like, I'm willing to fight for
the spot if you need to.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
Well. I took kind of the upper half of the
arm and they took the lower half of the armrest
because I felt like I'm in the middle. I get
first right of refusal.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
I thought you you all would be sitting in first
class with your family in those reclining seats. You tell
me you're in the middle with strangers.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
We had flights from at Double hockey Sticks.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
It was awful.
Speaker 6 (32:16):
Did you stay on the air off the air? What
time you got home? Did you already say.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
That I've not said that yet. I walked into my
house at three o'clock this morning. Three o'clock this morning,
because were landed in Cincinnati like a one. But I
had to take Joe side to his dorm because you
know he's gonna go to class this morning.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
Right, we're a big class guy, huge class guy.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
So we're got to work that out, all right.
Speaker 6 (32:34):
And that makes shim worse. You were in Cincinnati, you've
if not for needing to get back to drop him.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
A hotel and come over here to Highland this morning. Yeah,
I drive, I go to bed at three, I had
to come right back up here, be back up here
at nine this morning.
Speaker 6 (32:45):
Well, I don't think you were being a creep looking
at phone. So that's that's just what people do.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
All right.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Shannon says, we got a phone call. Who we got, Shannon,
Let's go to Steve. Steve, go ahead, Steve, how are you?
Speaker 5 (32:56):
Steve?
Speaker 8 (32:57):
Hey? I want I hit the hospital. My sister Bill
and broke her neck this morning, of all things. But
what I wanted to call in about. Yeah, uh. Brand
White seems to me like he's a great recruiter and
he's great at developing players, but it's play calling is suspect.
(33:18):
With the amount of NFL talent we've had and that
we have potentially now, we should be a top five
defense consistently in the SEC and we're not there. And
I think it's because his play calling. I don't know
what you guys think about that. I know everybody seems
to love you, but he interviews for other jobs all
(33:38):
the time and never gets one. So I wanted to
get your guys all.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Right, Steve, appreciate it. You know, I thought the defense
the first two games were like lights out. Took a
step back in the Eastern Michigan game. I don't know why.
I don't know if it was play calling, I don't
know his effort, I don't know what the.
Speaker 6 (33:52):
They were very thin in the secondary. I mean, that's
not an excuse against Eastern Michigan. You're in the SEC.
But that is one thing that held them back a
little bit.
Speaker 2 (33:59):
They some freshman they yeah, yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (34:01):
Mean I legitimately cover the team, and I'd never heard
of one of the guys that was in there making plays.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
So have you seen enough of the defense to give
you confidence going into South Carolina? I think so.
Speaker 6 (34:10):
And you know, Brad White, a lot of fans don't
like the band don't break Whish. He's a little more aggressive,
but his overall body works been good enough that I'm
not gonna be too critical Brad White, even though I
have a few nitpicky complaints. There is a little bit
of like you're watching Drew Phillips and Carrington Valentinelese gus
NFL Sundays starting for these teams. But overall, I think
(34:30):
Brad White's a good man. He's a good coach in
the locker room. Wish he'd, you know, maybe bitz a
little more, maybe get a little more aggressive, but that's
just his style of play and it's actually worked for
Kentucky many times. You know, sometimes against the Tennessees and
the fast paced offenses that can really throw it around,
it doesn't work out. But overall, I think he's done
a good job. Sorry, so keep yeah, I can absolutely
(34:53):
do that. You know, Matt said this, but and I
don't think it's that wrong. But when Stoops leaves whenever,
that is, if Mitch Barnhardt is still in charge, I
think Brad White will be high on Mitch Barnhart's list
of people he wants to seriously consider.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
And when is Summer's name go down a little bit
after they got waxed by Ole Miss.
Speaker 6 (35:13):
You know, we as Kentucky fans, we root for tou
Lane and uh you know, uh, I guess Mario put
that in the parlay, yes, but that that if he
had beaten Ole Miss, we might have had to start
thinking that he's not an option here because there's gonna
be a lot of open jobs. Yeah, he would have.
He's already high on all coaching searches as it is.
But if he had beaten Ole Miss in Oxford, he
might have gotten out of Kentucky's reach, So that that
(35:34):
might have been a good win if people are really
wanting that name. Whenever that time comes.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
All right, well take our break, come back, our final segment,
Final break, final segment Here eight five nine two O
two two eight seven, Ryan Drew and Shannon here live
at Fort Thomas Highland's High School on Kentucky' Sports Radio.
Welcome Back Kentucky's Ports Radio. Yeah. On the Avis and
Last Text Machine, Drew, somebody texted in and we should
have asked Tayden if he believed they actually landed on
the moon or not, because Jared was a big conspiracy
theorist that that never happened.
Speaker 6 (35:59):
I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that, because I'm
the one that would pope Jared and get him to
go off on those rants on the Football podcast.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
And when we was convinced they never landed on the moon,
it was done in a studio. He's convinced.
Speaker 6 (36:08):
I might have to run in the cafeteria and find
him and ask him off there, because we need to
know that before we leave.
Speaker 2 (36:13):
Who's this sac with Sponsored by Drew.
Speaker 6 (36:14):

Speaker 2 (36:44):
Before we get out of here, we do want to
talk a little basketball because there's been some news come out.
Speaker 6 (36:48):
Yeah, today they can start practicing more. Pope even tweeted
they had an early morning practice. I believe they took
like three days off between the summer workouts and then today.
It goes from eight hours to twenty. So they're they're
ramping up over there with instruction and coaching, all everyboy
out there at once. And then I was kind of
watching it as we were setting it up because it
went out, but Pope put a short highlight clip out
(37:10):
and got like Malaco moreno dunking on people, nice Trenton
Noah hitting the corner.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
Three.
Speaker 6 (37:14):
It's only about a minute clip. But uh, I know
we're excited about football ramping back up this week, but
the basketball team is really getting in the lab too.
Pope said they have another practice this afternoon, so two
a day to start the week.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Well, that's why he gave them three days off. It's
about their later about to get sore, a lot of practice,
a lot of time on the court. Come about the
next starting today.
Speaker 6 (37:32):
Yeah, and it was great. I caught a little bit
of phill to sixty eight last week. But you know,
Jack Pilgrims had some insider notes. They're bringing people into
practices J Coyle Mann from The Ringer, and the reviews
were getting are quite encouraging. A lot of a lot
of look at this team. Depth is the word you
keep hearing, like very very very high floor in a
very high ceiling. We'll see how the finished product is.
(37:54):
But you know, I didn't know exactly what Jeff and
Rob said on this show, but were great. People were
saying national contenders. If if all pans out, that it's
looking good.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
Now our mutual friend of ours has a little intel.
He went to practice the practice. He was at those
and not only was O way out, Lowe was also out.
You know, low probably just getting them ready for practice,
real practice, s trying. So Low was out, Otago was out,
and Jake Q was out. So who do you think
with the starting five on the White team, knowing those
guys were out, who would you have predicted that day?
Okay was on the starting five on the White team.
Speaker 6 (38:26):
So Low's I'm just gonna go because I gotta split
him up. I'll say Colin Chandler. No Aberdeen.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
Aberdeen was the point guard.
Speaker 6 (38:34):
Yeah, I think he's gonna be the backup. Jasper Johnson. No,
Cam Williams.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
No, Cam Williams was the three.
Speaker 6 (38:42):
Okay, Well, I was just naming anyone's starting I don't know,
Just give it to me.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
Trent Noah was the two.
Speaker 6 (38:48):
He was the two, Okay. I would have been one
of my last guests me.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
Too, and then Diabate the four and Brandon Garrison the five.
That was the five they went with that day.
Speaker 6 (38:58):
And I think, you know, that's just at and Ross
together while these guys are out early. But I thought, no,
this would be a year where he's gonna to sit
a little bit for next year because of the depth
he's gonna make them play him. Yeah, Like I mean,
they included him in the today. Pope even said in
the tweet Mountain Mamba he said something about him, so,
I mean he is going to force them to put
him on the court, just with all the hard work
(39:19):
and hitting open shots.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
I asked him about yellowch and he said second team
didn't impress me. But Jack said he was good when
he saw it. Maybe just had a bad day.
Speaker 6 (39:27):
That and he's just getting here. You know, he's got
a lot to get used to. So I'm not gonna
be judging him a little further down the road, but
I think highly of him too.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
And piggyback what you said about Channer said he was good,
just very solid leader of the blue team. He's gonna
get minutes too. Him and Trent both are going to
just make it impossible to not get them on the floor.
I think I feel like I.
Speaker 6 (39:45):
Expect a big jump from Chandler. One of the one
of the things I saw out of practices is this
time last year, wasn't a lot of talk of NBA
talent on the team. I mean, how many times we.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Say it, that's true.
Speaker 6 (39:55):
He did good in the portal, But is there a star?
You know, is there an NBA town this year? I
multiple options out there can be NBA guess.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
And that you missed it, like Goodman and doubt Rob
Dosta were both like saying Jayden Quainton's could be the
best player once you're healthy. He's not just the best player,
he's the highest draft pick. He's the guy and they
love him as a person, like he plays chess and
you know, has his intellectual conversation with him and he's
what is he's seventeen.
Speaker 6 (40:20):
Yeah, he's a child. Yeah he seems like such such
a good kid. And thank you all to you all.
I was excited to do it. Phill the sixty eighth
show even set it up, but set it up. I
listened as much as I could given the circumstances, and
it was great here and Jack fill In, you all
did a great job.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (40:33):
Jack.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Well, when Tadan Lorenzen left, Coach Spier came over and said,
you know, he's only sixteen years old.
Speaker 6 (40:38):

He said, Really, Tayduan could be a freshman if he
needed to. By the way the calendar works, I mean,

Speaker 2 (40:48):

Speaker 6 (40:56):

Speaker 2 (41:38):
Now we're on the other end of it, Stay away,

Speaker 6 (41:41):
