This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Now here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
That looked like it. Welcome in Tucky Sports Radio. True
Franklin here with Ryan Lemon at ks Bar and Grill.
It is Tuesday. Right September thirtieth is Tuesday, Bright Skys
and lexingon Shannon the Dudes in Louisville got a fun
show planned for you today. Ryan booked his more guest,
Richie Farmer and his longtime best friend Buck Stivers, who
(00:57):
have been on the show a couple of times. They
will join us today. We were actually just wondering if
they'll show up. I just saw a truck go by
was that them?
Speaker 3 (01:04):
They did?
Speaker 4 (01:04):
The truck just came in on two wheels.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
It looked like they were looking in like I think
that's them. It looks like them. It might be them.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
I see shadows, I see them. They will be in
here in just a minute. We love talking to Richie
and Buck. We'll have them for the whole show. But
we also want to hear from you on the Clark's
Pumping Shop phone line eight five nine to two two
eighty seven. You can also text Ryan on the a
Vision Glass text machine five O two seven thirty five
thirty six eighty Did you forget it again?
Speaker 5 (01:27):
I forgot it again?
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Three straight that Ryan? I mean, at some point there
has to actually be consequences for action, Shannon. This is
this has been every day.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I know Mario needs to have a good talking to
you about the consistency. How you're being consistently bad. You're
leaving stuff at home that's supposed to be a part
of the show.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Yeah, man, one time, okay, ha ha, that's funny, But
I think it's been every day. What's going on with
the with the with the Yeah, I mean they pay
good money to sponsor it, dude. They bought you a
brand new iPhone and you have yet to show up
with it.
Speaker 5 (01:57):
I think I forgot it buy water Farm on Friday.
Oh my goodness, definitely forgot it yesterday. What are we
doing today? The Avis and Glass tech machine, Well, it's
on a charger at my house. But that doesn't do
us off the charger.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
They don't sponsor the Ryan Lemon night stand where it
just sits there collecting dust. They wanted to be part
of the show. I think he's on probation, Shannon.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I think he is too. We need to like tape
that to your arm so you don't forget it.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Ryan.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
You gotta have it with you.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
I think if I forget it tomorrow at Shannon's house,
there has to be a punishment.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
All right, we'll set that up. Also, there's one more
thing you forgot. I'll get to in a second. Let
me run through my stuff. I'll go to you, Shannon.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
As always, the show is brought to you by TJ. Smith,
personal injury lawyer called TJ. And what Shannon?
Speaker 2 (02:37):
He'll make them pay?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
All right?
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Now, with that, let's get to the other thing Ryan
Lemon forgot. Richie Farmer is here. We'll go right back
to last Friday's show where Ryan made up a game
where we each had to build our top basketball roster
using players who share the same first initial of our
first name. Correct, So my name is Drew. I had
DeMarcus Cousins, Ye, dan Issell, Darius Miller had a long list.
(03:02):
I did forget Dearing Fox, sorry Darren. But Ryan, who
made up his own this game we see ours, forgot
several key players, including one Richie Farmer, who now joins
us today with his good friend Buck. Good to have
you guys, Richie, Ryan, would you like to hash this
out before we move on?
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Well, yeah, I was listening and uh, you know, since
I knew Buck and I was gonna be here today,
I was like, he'll surely remember me this one. And
then I got the listening to his list and I mean,
you know, like he left off me and Rack the
(03:40):
Kentucky Boys, I mean homegrown. I mean you know, yeah,
we can't even make the squad. I mean we weren't
am on the bench.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
But yeah, I humbly, humbly bow in your presence, asking
and begging for your forgiveness because that was a total
oversight on my part. You know, it's live radio and
you're thinking on the fly, you know, and I just homework.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
And you.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Were the one that signed the homework. You were the teacher.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
You know.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
I was so excited about my back court of Ralph
Beard and Raijon Rondo, forgot about Richie Farmer and Rex Chapman.
So I I I beg your forgiveness, sir.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Well, we I mean we will work past it. Okay,
we'll work past it, but it's going to take a while.
I haven't hurt that. That was hurtful. That was hurtful.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
It's good to have you here.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Oh, it's great to be here, guys. I mean, we're
so excited that you all asked us to do this.
And uh, I know, you know Buck, he's just through
the roof. Yeah, a little.
Speaker 6 (04:40):
Haven't we got had a little tough time getting here
with the traffic that.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Was you're in the big city, you know it sitn't
this in Clay County. We got we got like new
circles and Nicholasville's and all kinds of things that will
get backed up. Yeah, it was a lot of black popping. Yeah,
a lot of a lot of construction. Good to have
you on here, and don't sweat it. Ryan forgets a
lot of things these days. I'm glad you all of
a sudden me Richie. Just for those who don't know,
(05:06):
I know you've all been on several times. You're some
of our favorites. But I'll go to you Buck explain.
You know, I'm sure most of our listeners are familiar
with the basketball legend here, but let's get a little
bit about Buck. You know, you've known Richie forever. You
were probably the most talented of the two, but you
go back several years lifelong friends, right.
Speaker 6 (05:24):
Yes, I was always a little older than Richie. So
that's how he was able to get perfectly shooting, because
I used to smack that stuff.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
That what happened.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
That's what happened.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
See, I didn't know that's part of the story.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
Yeah, in the left hand where he you know, he
just couldn't get it over me.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
And yeah, yeah, we used to. And we also we played,
you know, we we had basketball goals hung up just
wherever you could hang one up, and we had one.
His dad had a barn down there and it was
they had Tennessee walk and horses and so you know,
(06:01):
they had a big long hallway in there, and so
we we we figured out a way that we could
put us a goal up, and uh we tied it
up with seagrass string, you know, on the side, so
you had to be you know, uh, we nailed it.
We we nailed it to the to the rafter. But
(06:22):
then you know, we we had to because it would
it would sag, and so we tied it up with
string on the side. And so you had to be
at certain angles to be able to make it. But uh,
but no, he's telling you the truth. You know. He
was two years older than than I was, and and
a lot bigger and stronger, and uh so I had
to learn how to, uh, you know, get my shot
(06:44):
off against bigger people. And you know, in those days,
we played against older folks. Uh, we would play against
you know, the bigger the Uh then in grade school,
you know, I mean you'd have the third and fourth
grader's play with the you know, seventh and nighth grade. Yeah. Yeah,
so I mean we played against older people. And and
(07:06):
I think that uh that certainly, uh in a lot
of a lot of ways can help you buck.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
What was it is? It tough to garden, but there
must be some tough angles if they're string hanging in
the goals tilted. It seems there's only certain spots you
could get a good shot.
Speaker 6 (07:19):
From, yeah, straight on or from the corner and uh
one little spot on the wing, but you had to
shoot between the.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Strings, and you had to put plenty of arts on him,
had to go up over the rafters.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
I know everybody likes to give their their best friends
a hard time, but if you can brag on him
for a moment, at what point growing up were you like,
all right, this guy's got something.
Speaker 6 (07:41):
Well, I mean it was pretty obvious, you know. I
can remember when he was in probably third or fourth grade,
the coach basically you know, browdy men and said throw
it to him and he's gonna shoot it, you know
which a lot of the seventh and ninth graders didn't
care much for that strategy, but do you know it
seemed to work.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
It's probably also a giveaway when he walked into third
grade with a mustache that probably set up a part.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Yes, that helped him.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
My whole lot with that, With that section of it,
we're not gonna take it easy on him, though, You're
gonna you know, push him around and lit a little
third grader take my spotty out of here.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
Well, at that point, I didn't have a spot you know,
I was in like in between her. I was in
like fifth grade, you know, it went out away to
eighth grade. So at that time I wouldn't even you know,
really playing that much.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
We want to hear a lot of these stories about
your ass past. We're gonna do that all day long.
We want to get calls on the Clark's Pump Shop
phone line eight five nine to two two eighty seven
if you have questions for Richie or a Buck, or
Ryan or Drew or Mario will drag him over. It's
not a Wednesday, but it's an ask anything Tuesday. And
I think you know, Matt's back on Friday, correct tomorrow.
We've got a fun show plan. We'll talk about that later.
(08:53):
But I and I try to be my own guy.
I'm not trying to do Matt's exact show here, but
I do feel like we have to mention the sense
of the first segment. I mean, he mentions them in
the first segment anyway, no matter what they do, win
or lose. But Ryan, it is a pretty big day
for the Old Reds.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
Right back in the playoffs, they made the playoffs in
the COVID year, but that was a shortened season, so
really it's their first time to make the playoffs in
like what is it like thirty over thirty years or
something like that.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
It's never won a serious since nineteen ninety five.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
That's that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Being the Dodgers, of all teams, it's it's.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
A big deal for them to be I think, what
when September first rolled around channel, I think they were
like maybe six games out of the wild Card race
and still somehow made it. They got hot right when
the Mets kind of did not get hot. They can
started losing right when the Reds were winning. So it
is kind of a hell of a run they got
on Toto and getting the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
You know, they've got a sneaky good pitching staff. Yeah,
so going tonight, you know he's going to die. I'm
not saying they can beat you know, obviously the Dodgers are.
They have probably the best roster in baseball. But he
picked but I picked the Yeah, but I picked the Rails,
(10:07):
and that I think it's gonna be an upset tonight.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
The Dodgers do lead in like home runs, like slugging
most but the two sides pitching stats are pretty equal.
It's only a three game series a little bit.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
So if hunder Green's going to night, is Lodolo going
to row night for the Reds. If you throw those
two guys back to back, you got a shot, You.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Got a shot. I mean uh. And obviously there's no pressure,
so you know, everybody expects them to lose.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Dodgers one what five of six during the season.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Yeah, yeah, and.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
Under Green got destroyed in one of the law seven.
Oh and he gave up five runs on his own.
He's an l A Native redemption game tonight, nine o'clock
the ESPN. What's our chase bar special? Great American Burgers
nine dollars?
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (10:50):
Great American are normally like twelve fifty. You can get
a Great American burger for nine dollars and you come
in wearing anything since THENTY Red. You get a free
side of fries. So if you want to order a
chicken sandwich or a fish sandwich or wings you have
rich stuff on, you still get a side of fries
with a purchase. So game day specials all day today,
tomorrow and the Thursday.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
There and if they can get to Game three, we'll
have a party here and I think Matt is gonna
try to make it, try to go from airport to
ks Bar to watch the game here. But one game
at a time. Got that tonight nine.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
O'clock, ESPN snow for nine o'clock too, aren't they I
think Thursday.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
I like the consistency.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Uh, one other quick thing before we go to break
in Cincinnati Sports, the Bengals watched it. It's not great.
I actually turned it off. You know, Ryan, I have
I worked from the NFL now, so you have to
watch every homework game. You know, I get Rogers emails.
It's a whole thing. But I had to turn that
game off last night. The Bengals, they're not like the
Titans where they just completely suck, but they have no
(11:46):
hope with with Burrow being out. They often store a touchdown.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
Their offense is nothing without Burrow out there. It seems like,
I mean, you still got Jamar Chase and Higgins and
they can't get him involved in any way, shape or form.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
It seems like Chase, probably the best receiver in the NFL,
completely nothing this year, doesn't have the QB to help
him out. Maybe you go get Jameis Winston. But I
also wanted to bring up after the game. I don't
know if you saw this. Chad Johnson does a some
kind of show with Shannon Sharp. I can't keep up
with all the Shandon Sharp shows. But Chad is just
bawling his eyes out crying. How disappointing. It is not
like a little tear full on, grown man ugly cry
(12:20):
over the Bengals. So one Cincinnati sport on a high today,
the other on a low because I think it's going
to be a long year for Cincinnati.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
And yeah, burrels out for a long time. So there's
no magic fix. I think that offense right now, quick,
no quick fix for sure.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
We did have a unique moment last night at the game.
My brother in law, Michael, lives in Denver, and he
sent me a picture from the stadium. He was at
the game with our friend Tyler, and right in front
of him were people wearing key jerseys about that key
and he said, is this is this their parents? It's
like that absolutely is so. In a stadium of whatever thousand,
brother in law ends up sitting right next to Dante
(12:55):
and and Nicole last night, Ryan, do they just go
to everything I mean, they're the most supportive parent you've
got one. In Lincoln, Nebraska. Now, that can be an
easy trip and it doesn't matter if they're playing Seattle,
New York. In Denver, they're finding Devin with the Broncos.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
There's probably not a lot of people in the stadium
wearing a number twenty six Key jersey. So I think
when Michael saw that, like it has to be their
family or something. But yeah, Dantae Nicole, they going to
Nebraska games on Saturday, Broncos games on Sunday. Broncos are
getting ready to go to London, like they play the
Eagles next and then I think they go to London.
While we're talking about the Keys, this man sitting right here,
Richie Farmer, reached out to me when Dane was here
(13:30):
at UK today. Man, I'd like to talk to Dane.
I'd like to tell him about, you know, being a
local kid, a Kentucky kid playing for the UK. I'd
like to just talk to him about my experience and
maybe help him a little bit. I thought that was
really cool for Richie to reach out and do that.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Well, it was during the time when he was kind
of going through a little difficulty yes, where he had
had some drops and uh huh, you know, Peoper were
you know, kind of on his case. But you know,
I think the world of the kid, and I wish
him nothing but say us, you know, and whatever he does,
he certainly has a chance to play at the next
(14:05):
level and I would love nothing more than to see
that for him.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
That's very cool that you do that, rich You've probably
done that several times. We'll find about found out more
about that and a little more after the break. I
might talk a little more about the overall MLB playoffs
starting today. We started like one o'clock, right.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
There's four games today. I think, yeah, the first one's
at one. I think the Padres play at three. I
think sometuffing like that.
Speaker 4 (14:23):
I'm very open about that. I do not pay attention
till right now. I will watch every game today. I
didn't watch a single full game of the regular season,
but I lok in for playoff baseball that starts at one.
And we have a lot more here at KOs Bar
with Drew, Ryan, Richie and Buck. We'll be right back.
Welcome back to KSR. Drew Franklin here with Ryan Lemon,
Richie Farmer, and Buck stoppers made the trip from Clay
(14:45):
County despite a little bit of black topping.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Getting in the way.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
As they said, r blowing him down just a few minutes.
That's all right.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
You know they're us of that traffic in Clay County.
You know where there's maybe the one.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Car traffic, that traffic, there's no traffic.
Speaker 6 (15:01):
Oh yeah, you're liable to get held up by a bicycle.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
For you, we lovely can. We've done some shows down
there with the mmffort concert.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
Yeah, what's the what's the place with the grippos, fri.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
Hats, hats? E is awesomes, fries and burgers around.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Absolutely, we want to hear from you all on the
Clark's Pumping Shop phone line eight five nine to two
two eight seven. Probably talk a little basketball with Richie.
We could do more Reds because Buck just went to
his car and came back wearing a Reds batting helmet.
That looks like it's fifty years old. What what season
was that is that from? It's pretty faded?
Speaker 6 (15:32):
Uh well, actually the hat came from when we was kids.
You could go to Sidler Brothers Supermarket and get a
slush puppy and a little bitty bat and helmet and
they and if you got so many, you end up
getting the bat and the helmet.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
So that's how many slush puppies.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
So you're telling on yourself. You're one of the people
they put on the wall when the food challenge.
Speaker 6 (15:54):
Absolutely, and I'm the one with the hat.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
That batting helmet has to be from the seventies because
it is faded and it's barely any thing hanging on there.
It's got to be the seventies.
Speaker 6 (16:05):
I'm fifty eight and I was probably five or less
when I got that.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
Wow, So I wasn't I wasn't far off with my
fifty year predictions. Are you all Reds fans down there
in Clay County?
Speaker 3 (16:17):
Yeah? Growing up, you know, that was really who we
had access to. That was the games that will be
on TV if there ever were any, and then we
would listen to Marty Brannman, you know, on.
Speaker 6 (16:30):
The radio, and oh when we was I remember when
I was sixteen, air a little league group went to
a Reds game and me and Richie and his brother
Russ drove down in my little less ten pickup and
watched the Reds play. I'll never forget it, because they
got in a fight and Russ rode in the back
of the true in London and hey, finally was you know,
(16:55):
knocking on the window? Want then there he got a
little cool.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
But have an image of him in the back of
the truck and you wearing that batting helmet of driving.
Do you remember what started the fight? Is that radio friendly?
Speaker 3 (17:07):
I have no idea.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Probably pretty common around that time, Shannon, let's not got
some phone calls?
Speaker 2 (17:16):
All right, let's go to Pat.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Pat, thanks for calling in.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Yeah, what's going on? I just have to talk about
the football game. I know it's the basketball of Red Stick,
but I actually live in Charleston, South Carolina. Grew up
in Louisville, went to u K. I argue K fans,
love you Richie, thank you sir. But this is an
embarrassment of what's been going on with US. South Carolina
(17:45):
owns US, he owns US and I hate I can't
believe I'm even saying this. I hate South Carolina more
than I hate.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
U of L. I do.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
Could you say? They They act like their LSU, Alabama
and Georgia. They think they're the best, and every time
they beat us. I got to hear it from all
a lot of things, and they're obnoxious as can be
because they're not that good. They're not that good, but
we lose to them like that, and now I have
(18:17):
to hear it from all these people. So I just
had to get that on my chest. Have a great
rest of the day, and thanks for let me call it.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
Yeah, I appreciate the call. Glad you were able to
let let that out. Felt therapeutic there. But you're right,
they're some of the most obnoxious fans in the SEC.
Think I talked about this on pregame.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Ryan.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
We think about the Tennessees being loud, and you know,
the worst South Carolina's not too far off, but they
don't get talked about enough for that. And you know,
you got punched in the face by one of them.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
You know, we've talked, You talked about former players that
played there, Like I think even Jojo mentioned it Joe
Camp when he was here. It is as loud as
any place they ever played. When it gets when he
gets rocking and gets going, and they played in Sandstorm.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
It just it is.
Speaker 5 (18:57):
It's it's a it's a tough place to play and
when you turn it over, I have a scoop and
score and an interception within forty five seconds. The top
gonna blow off on the of a place.
Speaker 4 (19:06):
Like that, and the Collars sound apologetic for bringing up
football on a basketball show. Now we're still complaining about football.
We'll do plenty of that. It just happens that we
have a former basketball player here. But we won football
calls too. This is a big week and we know
everybody's pretty frustrated. I assume you all are down on
the football Cats at the moment.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Uh. Someone, it's uh, it's hard to find a lot
of positive things. Uh, you know the one the one thing,
you know, I really like Cutter Bowie. I played basketball
against his dad in high school. He played at a
Root County so Scott, Yes, and uh, you know we
actually we went to Europe together, you know, during the
(19:45):
I played. We played on that Kentucky Junior All Star
team together and went to Europe together. So you know,
I'm I'm cheering for him. I'm I'm a big fan
of his and uh uh I think you know, uh,
he has a lot of uh uh right future ahead.
He made a lot of mistakes. But you know, I
was here in Anthony Whittt Yesterday Morning Talk a little
(20:06):
bit about he said. He said, if I had gone off,
my career had been based on my first game. Uh,
it was the worst game I ever played, you know,
So sometimes that can motivate you, but you learn from it,
and he needs experience. But but I think that that's
the one bright spot that we can talk about. But
there's a lot of things to be disappointed about, and
(20:29):
and that South Carolina game just brought a lot of
them to the surface. I think I think a.
Speaker 4 (20:34):
Lot of people are patient and Bowie being young, they
know he's in a tough spot. But Ryan nick Rouse
just shared a stat about the offense as a whole.
It's not pretty. There's only let me get this right,
only two teams in all of the FBS have fewer
passing touchdowns in Kentucky. And it's not even the military
schools that usually don't throw. It's U Mass in Northern
(20:58):
Illinois and then Kentucky with the fewest passing touchdowns so
far this season.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
Well, we knew going in we were going to be
a run heavy team because we had the good running
backs and a good offensive line. But I thought the
passing game, with the receivers we had, would be enough
to get something going when our leading receivers are a
couple tight ends. I mean, it makes you kind of wonder, Okay,
what is going on in that wide receiver room that
they can't get somebody to kind of step up and
help that passing game a little bit.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
Yeah, thank god for that Eastern Michigan game. Eastern Michigan
game when they got them going. But let's let's move
on from that and have happier things. Who's up next
on the phone line, Shore, Let's go to James, James,
what's up.
Speaker 8 (21:34):
Hey, good afternoon or good morning. I like to said,
let's keep it a basketball show for a moment for me.
I sure heard this story. Well, I believe I heard
this story from the Rick Fatino side of things. But
I'd like to take you back Richie about thirty five
years ago, in nineteen ninety I believe, and I only
asked this because I think the outcome was a good outcome.
(21:54):
But if I recall the story correctly, that you left
the team briefly or went back to Clay County after
a conflict of sorts, and Rick Patino came to your
house and you guys had a come to Jesus meeting,
and I would like to hear the story from your
perspective in kind of the context of what surrounded that
and how that story went. And I'll hang up and listen.
(22:15):
Thanks guys, Well.
Speaker 5 (22:16):
Listen, we're gonna we only got like this in a minute,
so sit on that because I don't want to cut
this story at all. I want to hear your response
because I've heard that story too. You ever heard from
your side?
Speaker 3 (22:25):
Okay, yeah, I'll let you know. Okay, hang on. You
want to cut you short? Yeah, we want to put it,
but it is longer than a minute, so.
Speaker 4 (22:33):
Yeah, yeah, we'll hold off. We'll come right back to that.
Out of the break, it's Drew here with Ryan at
ks Bar and Grill Big Red's Day. Come in here
for our Reds discounts game tonight at nine o'clock, and
we got Richie and Buck here sharing stories. We'll be
right back after this. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
He'll make them pay now.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 3 (22:56):
Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 4 (22:58):
This is not Matt Jones, this is Franklin. Matt Jones
is wrapping up his South African safari right now. I'll
actually check in with him later today. I'm doing Matt
Jones interrupted.
Speaker 5 (23:09):
Oh you are doing that today? An update, just.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
Matt vacation time here, Drew, Let's just do all the shows.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
So I'm all right, does he fly back to the
United States tomorrow or Thursday?
Speaker 4 (23:19):
I think Thursday, but I'm not positive. I'll have to
I'll let you know after I talked to him in
his tent. Yeah here later this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
I can't wait the.
Speaker 5 (23:26):
Teary stories because for him to just picture trying to
picture him in a tent on a safari, that's just
not how I picture Matt.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
Yeah, I think when we say tents, are you familiar
with glamping? I don't. I don't think he, you know,
was out there putting the stakes in the ground and
sleeping out there with with the with the elements.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
But but he's but he's staying out in the in
the wild.
Speaker 4 (23:48):
Yeah, I would assume a resort in the wild, but
he's still out in the wild. You know, some sometimes
tints have hot tubs whatever. But you know, for him,
he is roughing it. I'm not trying to downplay he
is in Kuger National park with animals around him.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
For him, that's that's that's big.
Speaker 4 (24:03):
There's one thing that happened today when I walked in
and then we got to get to Richie's story. But
I thought, I have to get out in front of
this before Matt lands.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
All right.
Speaker 4 (24:10):
I went in the back to get a drink. You know,
got it, got a drink today I'm hosting. Gotta get
me a little water. What I reached for a straw
like I normally would do. You you gotta have a
straw on the radio, you know, got this little thing here,
got a sip and it was a paper straw. And
I thought if Matt Jones was here and saw a
paper straw in this bar, I think he would I
think he'd throw the TVs. I think he would break
(24:31):
everything in here. Luckily it was just sent as like
a sample thing to try. We're not switching. But as
you know, if that had been something that happened while
Matt was out of the country, I think there would
have been hell to pay here.
Speaker 5 (24:41):
I think the headphones would have slammed down on the
table and we would ain't Nott have seen for a
couple segments he'd been back there trying to get some
plastic straws delivered immediately.
Speaker 4 (24:50):
But all get there and he's back Friday at Shady
Raising Louisville.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
Yes, return, So Royn and I have.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
A Shannon have a couple more days. Uh, I want
to talk about tomorrow show a little later. Right now,
it's we don't want to make people waiting longer for
that story. We got cut off. Oh so Richie, I
don't forget, forgot what the guy asked, but had.
Speaker 5 (25:07):
Well I heard the story where Rick Pattino Richie left
the team. Patina went down to Clay County talked Richie
to come back to the team. That's I've heard that
story for years. I've never heard your side of it.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Well, it didn't happen exactly like that, but you know,
they're Uh, there was there was a time where you know,
I'd been running uh morning, noon and night for about
a month, and you know, and I kind of felt
like that I was being picked on, and you know,
(25:39):
there I was just going through a lot, and I
was doing everything that I could do. And so one
morning I was over, I was on the stamaster and
you know, Rock Oliver was U was in there, and
of course rock, uh, you know famous. You know, he
was famously not too happy in the morning, especially when
he had to get up to be there. And I
(26:00):
didn't want to be there either, but I was on staremasters,
you know, doing the best that I could do, nothing wrong,
you know, whatever was happening. And he started, you know,
cursing at me and you know, talking about, you know,
putting me down whatever. Yeah, I guess trying to encourage me.
(26:21):
But at that point, I think it was my breaking point.
And so I just hit the button, stepped off of it,
and I looked at him and kind of gave him
a few choice words and said, I quit. And so
I walked into the locker room and I was sitting there,
you know, and I because I'd never quit anything in
my life, and I was sitting there and I was,
(26:42):
you know what, because that was my dream, that was
you know, that was what I had always wanted to do.
And but I just, you know, I just kind of
felt like that that they wanted to get rid of me.
They were trying to run me off. So, you know,
so I was crying, and you know, he comes to
the locker room and he's like, we'll go up to
(27:03):
the coach's office and tell him what you've done. And so,
you know, I didn't even finish getting dressed. I you know,
just got my clothes together and I walked up into
the coach's office, when at any other time, if you've
been trying to avoid them, they would have been everywhere
I walked through. They're walking a coach anywhere in there,
you know, And so so I just I just proceeded.
(27:25):
I walked on out to the lodge and I was
crying so hard. I called one of my buddies and
I said, look, I've quit the team and I need
somebody to take me to Clay County, you know, take
me home. And they was like, all right, we'll be
right on over. So they come over and pick me up,
and I mean, we get to Manchester and so when
(27:46):
I walk in the door, Uh, there's my whole family
setting there waiting on me. They know, well, coach had called.
He was out on the road recruiting at the time,
and he had called, and you know, he he had
let him know what was going on. So when I
walked in there was like, well, what's the deal. So,
(28:08):
you know, we had a conversation, but they told me
that coach. Coach Patino had called and that he wanted
that he was going to be able to call back
that evening to talk to me, but he wanted actually
us to come up there the next day he was
coming back in town. So I went back you know,
long story short, you know, I went back up there
(28:31):
the next day into his basement, and uh, you know,
we we did talk about a whole lot of things,
just you and him, just me and him. We went
down into the basement. Mom and Dad stayed upstairs with
Joe Anne and and uh, you know, we were down
there probably maybe an hour and a half, but you know,
we started talking about a lot of things. But at
(28:54):
the end of at the end of it, he said, well,
I think if you're gonna quit, he said, I'm just
gonna I think I'll just quit too, you know, And uh, yes,
I mean yeah, no, it was. It was a Jedi
mind trick for no doubt. So I started like, well,
(29:16):
you can't do that, coach, I mean, you know you
can't quit. You're ricky pion. Uh he is like, well, yeah,
he said, you know, if you if you don't want to,
if you ain't gonna stick it out, then I think
I'll just quit too, and we'll just quit together. We'll
have a press conference. And said, we can't do that,
and you know, so he said, uh, he said, well,
(29:37):
I mean, will you stay with the team? And I said, Coach,
all I need to hear is that you want me
on this team. You know, I said, I grew up
dreaming and playing here and I love this place and
I'll give it everything and have given it everything that
I've got. But uh, I just need to know that
you want me. And he said, we want you. And
so we hugged and cried and carried on and we
(30:01):
went upstairs and you know, told mom and dad. You know,
so I stayed in Lexington and the rest is history. But
that did happen.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
Wow, Bock, what would you have done if he had
come back and had told you?
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Well, I'll be honest with you.
Speaker 6 (30:15):
I saw the transformation from the time he left Clay
County to the time he went to Rick Patino's boot
camp down here. And like when Richie left, no get
me wroung. Richie had more talent than you know. He
was not the most in shaped player I'd ever seen,
but he could play by and when they took him
(30:36):
down there the first time i'd seen him. When he
came back, I was up at the top of his
heel and he lives up on a pretty big hill
and he had a bunch of guys in there, and
they was rabbit hunting or something. And here he comes
running up that hill with a shotgun and he runs
right past me and right on up the hill. And
I said, there talking to Richard, and I said, who
was that? You know, you know, if the court been
(30:58):
more than ninety feet high school, you had trouble.
Speaker 5 (31:01):
But but it.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
Was amazed in the transformation, you know, And I mean it.
He was in the best shape of his life at
that time. And I guess you we have to thank
Rock Oliver for that.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Ye mentioned this hill. You've told the story before. I said, hell,
I made it two syllables there. Yeah, you've told him
the past. But you grew up shooting on the side
of a hill. I should your conditioning to be the
best if you're chasing rebounds down the hill like that.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
I didn't miss that many.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
Yeah, you up for that one.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
But you know, coach Coach Keith and coach Patino were
I mean, there were a lot of similarities in the
way that they did things because both were uber successful
at what they did. But but coach Keith didn't believe.
You know, he played college basketball on a small scale,
(31:56):
and uh he said, I remember our coaches and how
they would run us and how you know, we just
didn't have anything left. And uh he said, I never
wanted my players to you know, I want to I
want to keep their legs. And so he believed in
playing into shape. And so you know, my last couple
of years in high school, I was, I mean, you
(32:19):
were in shape enough to play his style, but uh
but it was we didn't run and press and play
the style that coach Patino played and it was completely different.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
You know, I watched the kids warm up, you know,
and like they'll be shooting from all over. Well, if
you played for coach Keith and you can't. He came
out there and you was not shooting from where you
was going to be shooting in a game using trouble,
you know, like if one of your six one center
is after shooting a three pointer, he's in trouble. It's
(32:51):
it's the game has changed a whole while. But like
coach Keith had his players, I mean, you didn't go
out if if he caught you at the ballpark shooting
from where you wouldn't be shooting in a game because
his whole life entries it revolved around. I mean, it
was well thought out and planned. Every time he was
(33:11):
going to get a shot, he was going to get
you an open shot, and you was expected to make
that open shot. And and that's how he worked. I mean,
he worked on percentages, and like rich you'll tell you,
I mean it was very effective, and especially when you've
got guys that can can do it well.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
He took people and put them in positions and you
know that's that was where they did stuff. From that position.
Everybody had a role, and you know, you learned to
play that role. But if your if your shots were
coming from you know, two to eight feet from the basket,
(33:50):
if he goes by and sees you shooting threes, he's
gonna come down there and ask you. He said, how
many times you're gonna shoot that shot? And again, like
you could just I mean, you couldn't hardly even act
a fool around him, you know, just playing around shooting
from the center line or whatever. Uh it was. It
was just crazy, Uh Buck, and I've done that a
few times. But uh yeah, through the left handed hook
(34:12):
on him from a three quarter court you made two
in a row. Yeah. I said, you'll never do that again.
Speaker 6 (34:18):
And he throwed it up there and hit it again,
hit it again.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
Sounds about right, doesn't think growing up with like the
guy that can think he's just the best. He can't
beat him in anything.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
Yeah, well we he didn't win that much.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
Okay, yeah, you're blocking his shot. You have the size
of it.
Speaker 5 (34:34):
Before we get away from the Rock Oliver strike, I
gotta ask you what was the relationship like with him
after that?
Speaker 3 (34:39):
Then?
Speaker 5 (34:40):
Was he still as hard on you or did things
change after that incident?
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Well? Rock and I were always we had a good relationship.
I mean, I think that we spent so much time
together we had to like e toh, but uh, he's
still working was hard. Well, I think that he you know,
coach Coach Patino told told me, he said, you know,
(35:05):
I I should have called him off, and I didn't.
You know, he was he was taking the heat, he
you know, because he he said, I had him pushing
you and you were doing good. You were doing what
you were supposed to do, and I forgot to call
him all he just kept on and but but he
took you know, he took the blame for him. But
(35:26):
Rock Oliver and I, I mean, you know, we always
had a great relationship.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
He Rock was he's still around.
Speaker 3 (35:32):
Oh he's still around. Still.
Speaker 6 (35:34):
Look when they hired Pope, we was down there. He
made Richie do twenty pushing.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
Neat hearing these stories, we'll have more coming off. It's
nice confirming that uh Richie's career got restored in uh
Rick Patino's basement. And I tell you what, if your
basement needs restoration, how about calling about that number one
in cleanup, whether it's storm or water damage. We've got
a pro for that. We're the ones who make make
(36:01):
it like it never happened. Franchise locations all across Kentucky,
and franchises are independently owned and operated. They're also a
big time sponsors in baseball with the Reds and in

(36:24):
female record holder. Sarah McGill is from the Lexington Fire
Department sponsored by serf Pro. They're everywhere and they can
help clean up again, whether mold, fire storm or water damage.
There's a pro for that. It's all at serf Pro.
We'll be right back after this. Welcome back, Oksar true
frank Songs. I was like, wait a minute, did I
zone out? Thank you the first true Franklin Pride limit.
(36:49):
Richie Farmer, Buck Stivers were a kass spar and girl
for a second there, guys, I thought I zoned OUTA
thought it was still the commercial and Shannon Yell's go.
Nice little trick there, Shana yea that commercial. We were saying,
he gets us. Every time we throw our headsets on,
we feel like we're coming back. But Shannon actually punked me,
and so I would still be sitting here staring out
(37:11):
at Broadway just watching cars go by. All right, we're
back a five nine to two, two eighty seven. We
got lots more fun stories coming from Richie and Buck.
But Shannon, let's knock out a few phone calls.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
All right, let's start with Baker.
Speaker 4 (37:24):
Baker, thanks for coming.
Speaker 7 (37:28):
Got a question for Richie behind the scenes story of
Bobby Keith, And do you wish he coached Trey?
Speaker 3 (37:35):
Oh, my gosh, I would have loved to have had
him coach my son. But uh, I don't know. There's
there's a lot of Bobby Keys stories, but I can't
think of anything right off hand that you know that
people would like to hear. But sometimes when people you
(37:55):
know remind you of something that happened, then you can
tell the behind the scenes. But uh, but to my son, Trey,
you know, he was six four in a quarter. You know,
he could he could handle the ball decent, but he
was a great shooter and he had unlimited range. But
(38:16):
he could pull up, he could go right left. I mean,
he could do it all. And if he would have
played for for Bobby Keith, I think he could have
been something special. I told you, yeah, he had he
had the ability to make him forget about me. He
could have you know, he could have played anywhere.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
I was at some of those games where he was
making his trying to make his run of the Sweet sixteen.
What was it like being a dad in the crowd.
You know, you've got your own legendary Sweet sixteen career,
But was it hard to sit there watching him play
for Clay County.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Much harder sitting in the in the stands, as you know,
as a dad, than it is to be out there,
because out on the floor, all you know, I felt
like that I had control. I could, you know, I
could do something about it. Over there, you're just you know,
you have no control. And uh but but his uh,
his one time that he played, you know, they played
Cove cath and you know they lost. I want to
(39:08):
say they lost by two. But but had him should
have beat him, actually should have beat him. Uh but uh,
but Trey had I think nineteen points, eleven rebounds, you know,
had a had a nice game. He was just a
sophomore that year, so he was he was a nice player.
He went to West Alabama and and didn't stay but
(39:30):
a semester and didn't work out. So but he could
have played somewhere.
Speaker 4 (39:35):
It's good another calling Shannon Bob and Jamestown. Yeah, Bob,
you can say whatever you want here.
Speaker 9 (39:45):
Spent much time down there on the Lake Town.
Speaker 3 (39:48):
Well, I've been. I've been down there a few times.
I haven't been down there in a while though. Most
of the time when I go to Lake Cumberland, I
go over to Conley Bottom or lee Lee's Ford or
and where over there and on the Somerset side, but
certainly a beautiful lake.
Speaker 9 (40:08):
Well, the west end's the best, and of course we
got down there seventy six Falls. That's a nice party spot.
But then up there at the other end of Party
Cove up on the South Fork. Anyway, that was a
great story you had about Beatino. I mean, I know
it's one of the challenges in your life when you
were facing that, whether to stay or go. But we're
(40:31):
glad you stayed.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
Well.
Speaker 9 (40:33):
Good talking to you, Richie.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
Yeah, thanks, Bob. I appreciate your call. That means a
whole lot. And uh, you know, growing up and as
a kid, I mean I can remember just dreaming of
having the opportunity to play at Kentucky and you know,
I was one of the very fortunate few that got
an opportunity to to live that, and you know, I
(40:55):
was very blessed and I'm thankful every day.
Speaker 4 (40:58):
We're gonna hear a lot more stories from these.
Speaker 3 (41:00):
Ron.
Speaker 4 (41:00):
I appreciate you booking another good guest for us. What
we got tomorrow big show coming up.
Speaker 5 (41:04):
Well tomorrow, we've done a show at my house. We've
done a show at your house. We've done a show
at Matt's house. Tomorrow for the first time, we're doing
a show at Shannon's house and he's man cave in
Mount Washington.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
Shannon's gonna drive the show. I don't don't spoil your topics,
but how much of it is alien based?
Speaker 3 (41:23):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (41:23):
I don't have any topics yet? What are you talking about?
You guys have topics for these shows. No, I have
nothing written down yet. I have no idea what we're
going to talk about. But you know, listen tomorrow and
we'll figure it out as we go. That's one of
the things about this show. We kind of just just
riff and you know, we never know what direction the
show is going into. So what do you guys went
for breakfast tomorrow? Do you have any requests? I get donuts?
Speaker 4 (41:42):
I know, no donuts.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
No donuts.
Speaker 4 (41:45):
It's close to the public. But do we have full
access to your fridge while we're there? I might just
stay all day?
Speaker 5 (41:49):
Yeah, yeah, plenty of Shannon the dude's brewing there.
Speaker 3 (41:52):
You know, just pace yourself.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
And did you save any of those country hand biscuits
from handa?
Speaker 4 (41:56):
No, no, no, long we got another hour here before that, Drew, Ryan,
Richie and Buck where ks Bar and Grill will be
right back on ks R.
