here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Thursday, October the ninth.
I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar and Grill.
Another beautiful October day heading into big blue madness and
a bye weekend in football. You can give a Shallton
Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. We're gonna make this and
ask anything Thursday. I got so much to talk about
the last couple of days. I want to hear from
(00:56):
you or the text machine. You can ask anything you want.
Seventh seven two seventy seven four five two five four
and then that's a text machine and the numbers eight five, nine,
twenty two eighty seven. I'm gonna take calls starting a
second segment, So give us a shout. Clark's Pump and
Chop online and then this edition sponsored by the TJ.
Smith Office. You called Tj'll make them pay. Drew is
off his wife's uh brother is getting married, correct, right?
(01:22):
And so he is in Colorado, and I've got Ryan.
We're gonna have Mario sit with us. Mario, how are you, sir?
I'm good? How you doing? And then Shannon is in Louisville,
got a lot of stuff to get to Ryan and
excited to have you here.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
He like our little son. We're just watching him blossom
right in right, you gottle.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
He loves saying that. Why do you like saying that?
I just he has a grown man, don't times him?
Speaker 5 (01:46):
He had that little smile like he was twelve years old.
He's so happy to be here today, just like my
little son sitting right there out of him.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yes, well he's not your son, he's a grown man.
We've got folks here from Russell Springs, Lexington. Where are
you all? From? Lawrence Burg? So all over and you
can come in, have lunch, try our new burger wings,
et cetera. Thursday Night Football tonight, guys, yesterday we taped
the cover zero podcast, went home. I watched a lot
(02:15):
of baseball last night. I was I was pulling for
the Blue Jays flat and they won. They moved on.
You got the other series all I think we got
some Game five's coming up. So exciting stuff for you
baseball nerds.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
I know Shannon and I we were talking about it.
We will try to watch the baseball games. I got
the Phillies and Dodgers game last night. But both those
teams are so good. Those are like two of the
best teams going. Who won Phillies killed them last night.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Okay, so that series is still still going. Yeah, okay,
so tonight you got a lot of good stuff, right.
You got Game four of Cubs Brewers, you got Phillies Dodgers,
and you got Thursday Night Football. That's a that's a
big set of games. We'll have all of them here
at the bar. That's a good that's a good set
of things to watch.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
It was the Giants Eagles tonight.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Is that the Giants Eagles switch is not bad? Jackson
Jackson dark. Were you watching Bronnie play in the preseason, No,
I didn't.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
I've seen his clips on I've seen some of his
highlights on the social media though.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
So, by the way, you should know that for Mario
h his player is Jasper Johnson. Oh, he's more excited
about Jasper Johnson than anybody. Like when in the in
the little uh uh pro Day, every time Jackson, Jasper
Johnson gets the ball, he says like, Okay, here we go,
all right, are you ready? Here we go? Like he's
(03:26):
more pro Jasper Johnson. Then I'm like that with Jalen
Low though, so I can't get at him, but he's
like that with you.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
You know the clip that the UK Twitter account we
gave basketball Twitter account put out had like maybe nine
buckets in it, and Jasper Johnson had two threes back
to back in like.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Those were the only two shots.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Well, they showed him.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
I think he was good getting the selective picking there,
do you It was interesting. There was an NBA scout
yesterday that spoke to KSR that talked about his view
of the practice, and he said that this year's Kentucky
basketball team is like Noah's all, we have two of
everything good line, which I think there's a lot of
(04:04):
truth to that. He also said there's gonna be one
or two guys that end up getting left out. There's
just too many people. So this is what I wanted
to ask. Let's say there's one guy and I'm not
talking Rhyese Potter and I'm not even talking Yellowvich or Hawthorne. Right,
So those guys, Let's just assume those guys don't get
(04:25):
big time but minutes of the other guys, because they're
not gonna play ten consistently, they'll go eight or nine.
That's what That's what Pope seems to do. He's not
gonna go ten. They'll probably go eight or nine of
the other ten. Who do you think is most likely
to be the one that gets the least minutes of
(04:46):
the of the next ten, so plays six minutes or
eight minutes a game instead of fourteen? What do you think?
But you guy have to pick one. Who's it gonna be?
And let's say Quaintance is playing this when Quaintance is
on the court, So when he is one of the guys.
Speaker 7 (05:05):
I want to say Cam Williams, but I don't.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
Why would you say him?
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Oh, it's that four spot's kind of weird because you
got you got Trent Noah can play the four a
little bit, you know, Cam Williams can play the four,
and then you got Modiabate. So I'm a little bit
worried about how how do you like spread the minutes
between those three?
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Yeah, but Cam conn is no. But you have to
have an answer. You can't cover all your bases.
Speaker 7 (05:29):
I feel like it just depends on who they play.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Now, you still have to pick one, you know what
I mean, Like they might need Cam for because Camp
shoot the three.
Speaker 7 (05:37):
That's the things gonna be.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
I'm gonna go with Cam car what about you?
Speaker 5 (05:41):
I feel like it's gonna be Malachi or Jasper just
because and I'm leaning towards Jaspers because they are so
loaded at guard.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
You think there's a chance Jasper is the one that
does like that. I like that.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
I mean, I feel like he's gonna play a little bit.
He has to play O take it.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Aberdeen and Colin Chandler are probably all four ahead of
him right now.
Speaker 7 (05:57):
So you got Aberdeen too, So yeah, so.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
You're gonna have Jasper Johnson. That's I mean, that's it,
Jasper Johnson. I don't know what people are making for
sure on the team. Again, this is just a guess.
I have not heard real numbers on what people are making,
but I would I would guess that Jasper Johnson is
(06:21):
the third or fourth highest paid player on the team. Wow.
And so you think I would say Otaga away and
and Uh and Jay and Low are the two highest
paid players on the team. Would you agree with that,
Mario's I think those are probably the two highest paid players.
I would say Jasper Johnson his nest and you think
he's not gonna play.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
They're just they're just so loaded at guard.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
I mean, they're just like we just mentioned Otaga, Low, Aberdeen,
those three guys may start. Colin Chandler's gonna probably play
ahead of him.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
So and by the way, I think the reason those
two guys are the highest paid Otega gets the money
kind of for returning and being good. And then I
think Jayalen Low. There was not that many point guards
out in the portal this year that were really good,
and so I think it was a it was a
seller's market in that and so I think that worked
well for Jail. Where's a guy like Williams or Aberdeen
(07:11):
or even Diabate, there were more guys like that, you
had more choices, whereas with point guards there were really
only five or six really good ones out there in
the portal.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
So well, they've done it two years in a row
when out and got Lamont Butler, who was perfect last year,
and may I think low will be perfect again this year.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Hanea, which one do you think is unlikely to play?
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Unfortunately? I really liked this guy with him being from Kentucky,
but I think Melica Moreno heard the least about as freshman.
I think Brandon Garrison's gonna eat up a lot of
minutes at that position, so I could see him maybe
getting six or seven, maybe eight a game, but not
much more than that.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
So my answer has changed. Yeah, So if you asked
me that answer before I went to South Africa, the
answer would have probably been Trent Noah. And then I
had people tell me you're wrong, White people around the program,
like he's gonna play, He's he's gonna get, he won't start,
but he'll get like solid seventh man minutes. So then
(08:05):
my answer was gonna be Malachai Moreno. And then I
saw him and I think he's I think especially until
Jaden Quainton's plays. Yep, I think he's gonna play. And
now my answer is probably the same as Mario's. It's
gonna be Cam Williams. And the scout said that too.
The scout said, look, he's got the highest floor ceiling
(08:26):
of any player. He has a chance to, if he
consistently hits threes, be a first round draft pick in
the NBA draft.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
Yeah, a lot of mock drafts had him drafted the
first round.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
He also has a chance to not play at all
if he's not hitting threes. So, like, I don't think
Mario was wrong. If he's hitting threes, dude's gonna play
and we'll be saying goodbye to him in May and
watching him go to the draft. If he doesn't hit threes.
You can see that in Pro Day you can listen.
(08:56):
I'm pulling for the kid. He seems like a really
nice guy. But he was the least impressive on the court.
But when I was watching him warm up, he did
not miss. Yeah, so when they put him in the game,
it will be does he hit the shot or not.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
You know, this summer with the TVT guys scrimmaged him.
Several of them said Cam Williams was the best shooter
on the team, better than Kobe Bray.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Last year, they had a little thing up there that
showed who had made the most threes in the month
of October. Now, granted, this is misleading because it's like,
you don't know how many they shot, right, this is
just how many went in gotcha and Trent no was
first and Cam Williams was saying yeah, which might have
been what people would have gassed. That means, hey, they're
(09:40):
taking a lot of shots and be there, they're missing them.
If I'm nine twenty two eighty seven, I want to
switch gears for a second. Talk about the football stuff.
So I was on Ari, Andy and Ari, which is
a show a college football podcast on on three. I
was on my way to a doctor's appointment, so I
had to Uh, I had to do it in the car.
(10:01):
I think I made them nervous, but I just said
I didn't hold the phone. I said it on the show.
I said it on my dash and drove. I think
it was fine there. Everybody everybody was all worried.
Speaker 5 (10:11):
It's fine, but it is kind of a weird look
like I could pull up that clip and he's driving you.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
Can see like the background is.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Yeah, well, because I was driving, that's exactly what I
was doing.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Put your phone down.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I did put my phone down, it was on the dash.
I wasn't holding it. But I was asked about the
thirty seven million dollars and what we said on on
on the show, and uh, you know, I said that
I think if if we get to the point, the
money will be there. And I don't know if you
saw that led to a huge discussion nationally about buyouts.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's an article coming out
(10:44):
soon nationally about just the idea of paying these biots.
I think I kinda when I said it, said it
without asking your opinion. Ryan. You there's a lot of
things you talk about that I don't think you know about.
But you do know about the Lexington social scene and
money and donors. You kind of you operate in those
high flo worlds. Well, I didn't say you were part
(11:06):
of them. I just said you operated in them. Do
you think if they if Mitch More, if they go
three and nine or four and eight, and Mark Stoop says,
like in Wolf of Wall Street, I ain't leave it,
do you think they could come up with the thirty
seven million dollars to tell him see you later.
Speaker 5 (11:29):
Lexington seems like it's a small town. It's a very
rich town. There's a lot of money in this town,
and a lot of guys don't flaun it.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
You won't even know it. But there's enough money to.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Give me a few of those people.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
I'm gonna give it to myself.
Speaker 7 (11:42):
He Shannon.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
I wouldn't you like to know a few of the
people that don't flaunt it.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
They have a lot of Yeah, those are the people
Ryan's hanging out with.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, that's exactly that's that's exactly right. Ryan's it speak
easy with all the people with a lot of money.
Maybe you're one of them.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
No, as you do.
Speaker 4 (11:55):
But that's your question. Yeah that's how it.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Yeah he door dashed. Isn't that way? People don't know?
But go ahead.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
So to answer your question, I think yeah, absolutely, they
could get that money. They could buy him out. They
need to do.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
You like, how easy is it? Do you think it's
like they well, let's put it another way, Ay, how
easy it is it? B Do you think it's already
been talked about?
Speaker 5 (12:15):
I think I would. I don't know. I'm guessing yes.
I think it has to be talked about, coming off
the last two seasons we've had here. I think that
those conversations are already underway.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
You do, I do. One of the thoughts I had
said for a long time and believe was, look, Mark
Stoops's friends with a lot of these big donors, They're
not going to try to do whatever to get rid
of somebody that they're friends with. Do you think his friends,
because a lot of these people are his friends, Yeah,
do you think his friends would buy him out?
Speaker 5 (12:46):
I think they would have a conversation, and I think
they would feel good about it, knowing that they think
Stops would be happy with it. I think I think
Stupe's gonna be about to get the point, man, you
pay my buy out. I'm ready to walk away.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
What are the chances? He just says, deal with it?
All right? So let's say they say, forget about thirty
seven million, we'll do it for twenty five. What are
the chances At that point Mark Stoops would say, well,
then I guess I'm coaching next year.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
He probably pretty high. He seems to be pretty set.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Look, so you think you think he would stay here
and coach even if he didn't really want to to
get that extra to get that extra pick the amount
of money. Probably, what do you think? I totally agree
with you. Yeah, and I was hoping you had a
different opinion.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
No, I think he's gonna hold his guns, like, nope,
if we signed this deal, we agreed to this deal.
This is what you owe me, you know, like.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Take take someone like Shannon. Okay, Shannon, and I would
not call stingy or like selfish, But if Shannon's old money,
Shannon's gonna get.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Everything in his old money. That's right.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
When you when you split the is that fair to say, Shannon,
do you.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Agree with that we had an agreement. That's the agreement
you agree Like.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
If Shannon, if you go out to eat with Shannon
and you're split in the check and your part is
eighteen dollars, Shannon is not taking sixteen dollars, or if
he only takes sixteen, he's gonna remember in the back
of your mind that you owe him two dollars. That's right,
that's Shannon. Yeah. I think Mark Steps is like that,
(14:28):
don't you.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
I Actually I do think he's like that, And I
think he still kind of realizes, Hey, man, I built
this program.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
We went this eras we've never gone to before.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I think that's a big part. Yeah, that's a big
part of it is he believes, like.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
Come on, Y'a'm almost owed this.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
You see what I did here?
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Yeah, you won ten games two times.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
I agree with you.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
I think he thinks that, yeah, and I think that's
gonna be hard for him to get past. That's why
I think, Look, you owe me this money. I've earned
this money. I deserve this money. Pay me my money.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah. Well, if I'm nine two eighty seven, is ask
anything Thursday if you have any questions about all that.
I still say, though, that schedule, which is very hard,
don't get me wrong, but I want you to think
about when we looked at the schedule at the beginning
of the year, and we looked at the next set
of games. Texas is unranked right now. We thought they
(15:19):
were gonna be number one in the country. They're unranked,
Tennessee is ranked. Florida is not as good as we thought,
Vandy and Auburn are kind of what we thought they'd be,
and Louisville might not be as good as we thought. Yeah,
so the schedule, it's not as bad as we thought.
I still don't know that we're gonna win any of
(15:40):
those games, but it's not as bad as we thought.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
The Texas game of the Louisville game, I didn't think
we're winnable. Now they are a little winnable.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
You think Texas is winnable.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
They're kind of struggling right now.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
I saw his look right there, Russell Springs. You don't
think Texas is winnable, do you? Yeah, I don't think
we do. Think the spread of that game will be Yeah,
that's what I was gonna say, fourteen and a half, fifteen.
I think that's I think that's probably what it's gonna be.
If I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven
text machine seven seven two seven seven four five two
five four, We'll take a break. Be right back here
(16:11):
at KOs Bar and Grills, Kentucky Sports Radio. Working back
at is Kentucky Sports Radio A five nine two eight
oh twenty two eighty say, we were just talking about
the UK football schedule in the in the future, you know,
ry and it came out our three while it was gone.
Our three regular opponents will be uh, South Carolina, Tennessee,
and Florida. I was hoping for South Carolina, Tennessee and Vandy. Yes,
(16:36):
But what was more interesting to me is how the
schedule gets divided. We're gonna have an every other year schedule,
h Like we play a lot of the bad teams
in the same year and a lot of the good teams.
So yeah, I think we have Alabama, LSU, LSU, and
Georgia the same year, and then the next year we
get like Missouri, Mississippi State, and Old miss So I
(16:58):
actually prefer it like that to be hopes honest with you.
So you have a chance once every two years to
actually win some game.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
Yeah, those home games in twenty twenty six against LSU
and Alabama are road games in twenty twenty.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Eight, twenty twenty eight, if if I'm correct, looks like
the hardest.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
It was ridiculous. It was super hard.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
If we get a new coach, tell him year three,
it's gonna it's gonna it's gonna be really difficult.
Speaker 5 (17:22):
What are you doing, right, I've tried to find that schedule.
I saved it somewhere, and now I can't find out.
You don't have it, Ryan, You know I got it somewhere.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Eight five nine, two oh twenty two eighty seven text
machine is seven seven two seven seven four five two
five four. By the way, Mario, who you haven't talked about,
who's stuck out the most to you in the pro.
Speaker 6 (17:38):
Day, Uh, Jasper Johnson number one, and then Malico Malico
Marino was, Uh, he.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
Loves Jasper Johnson.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
You love James for Johnson. It just like the way
he's Denbury number one. Malacamarino, though, I'm with you, he was.
He probably stood out to me more than anybody because
he's so much better than I remember.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
I watched him last year in high school at Great
Crossing then went to the of his games.
Speaker 7 (18:00):
Yeah, I was a little worried about like.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
You were worried about him lasted You said to me
last year that you didn't know he could play here.
I I am impressed by how much that, how much
better that kid's got.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
I am so proud of that kid because what I've
seen since like seventh grade and he developed where he
was playing his absolute best basketball. When Great Crossing made
the sweet sixteen, he just started dominating like he hadn't
done that up to that point, but he'd finally the
light bulb went off in his head. Or something and
just started dominating. He was the best player on the
court during the sixteen.
Speaker 3 (18:31):
A lot of you listening probably went to the Sweet
sixteen to see that Lion County Harlan County year with
Travis Perry and Trent Noah. And if you did, you
probably saw I think Lion County beat Scott beat Great
Crossing than like the semi five. It sounds right, Yeah,
so you may have gone to that game and moreno
was bad in that game. That was part of what
people because that was part of what people were saying,
(18:52):
is like, how do we not have Trent Noah? Remember
at that point he wasn't coming.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
Here, correct, He's going to South Carolina, South Carolin.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
How do we not have Trent Noah and we have Marie.
If that's the last time you saw the kid be
excited about what you're about to see, Yeah, it's a
different kid, it is. It's a completely different kid that.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
Game and you're talking about what they got bea by
Lyon County. He was probably the third best player on
their own team. Not last year. He dominated. He was
the best player. And he's come a long way because
he's worked hard at He's a good kid. Good family. Yeah,
I'm happy for him tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
By the way, we're at Wild Eggs and Hamburg. Correct.
Wild Eggs and Hamburg were always have it great food.
They usually have a lot of good deals. It's a
good chance to come see us tomorrow. Shannon will be
up here. We'll have a good time.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
You know, we did show up Wild Eggs and Tates
Creek when you were gone. Shannon went to this one
in Hamburg by mistake first.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
And then he got there to take care somehow.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
We always go to though, and then I didn't know
that's all.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
We go to. Well, I'm looking forward to tomorrow. That's
that's one of my favorite shows because we get to
eat all right. Who's up first? Ask anything? Thursday?
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Who's Michael?
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Michael? Go ahead, Michael, First time?
Speaker 8 (19:57):
Long done?
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Who A.
Speaker 8 (20:00):
So I went down to the volleyball game last night
at Read Arena in College Station, Texas and do the
environment there was pretty crazy. The whole lower arena was filled,
student section was going crazy and that game was just
amazing to be at.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
So for people who don't know, Kentucky's women's volleyball team
won yesterday against another top ten wins.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
Yeah, they were they were ninth in the country, right,
I think so.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
They now that is their fourth top ten win of
the year so far, and they were able to get
the win. So again, Kentucky's when they're there rank third
in the country and another big win on the road
at A and M yesterday. What's your question?
Speaker 8 (20:43):
No question, just wanted to say that, man.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
I was all too.
Speaker 8 (20:48):
Well, I'm about to get to class, So.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
If you have to get to class, yeah.
Speaker 8 (20:53):
Andrew, Yeah, and Drew telling our Billy and Drew were
telling me that I should call in about it.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
Oh okay, well I appreciate the call. Well, I'm glad
you enjoyed the game, and good luck at class. Have
you ever been to a game in College station?
Speaker 4 (21:04):
You never have? No, I want to go down there
when the football team played down they didn't make it.
You been down there?
Speaker 3 (21:08):
I went to What year it was we beat them
in basketball on the road? I want to say it
was Antonio Reeves junior year with Kellen. No, he wasn't
on that. It was the Kellen Grady team. Okay, so
the Kellen Grady team that wasn't Antonio Reeves. Kellen Grady.
We beat them down there. You may remember we got
(21:30):
down a bunch early and then came back and sort
of shut up the arena, And that was a good
maybe our best win of the year that year. I
was at it, and that arena was wild. They do
their stupid things with their guys dressed up as sailors.
But put that aside. It's still a very cool. Adviser.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
I found the schedule for next year, and we're at Texas,
A and M next year.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Okay, so Remia schedule next year in football.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
The home games are Florida, Alabama win, LSU win, and Vanderbilt.
When the five road games at South Carolina, when at Tennessee,
when at Missouri, at A and.
Speaker 4 (22:06):
M, when at Oklahoma. Okay, John short.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
So that's a doable road sketchy it is. Read those
road games again, South.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, A and M, and Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
Yeah, I mean, but the problem with that schedule next
year is the well, we'll definitely win that game. There
aren't many of them on that's true all right now,
Read me twenty twenty seven home.
Speaker 5 (22:30):
Games are South Carolina, Tennesseecha, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
See, that's those are all games with the exception of Georgia.
You could go into the year thinking you could win. Yeah,
and what are the road games.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
At Florida, at Arkansas, at Ole Miss at Texas. That
is a very doable state, much better than twenty twenty
six for the SEC.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Can we just fast forward to twenty twenty seven? If
you if I'm a new if I was a new
coach coming in here next year, I'd be building the
twenty twenty So uh huh, wouldn't you? Yeah, that is
a schedule you could do something with. Ask anything. Thursday,
We'll take a break right back.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
T J Smith, personal injury attorney, called TJ.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
He'll make them pay.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
No more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Here's Mark.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Mark Soup's gonna be walking in like Shane o'mack potentially
with this flight back front. Yeah, you know, WW Shannon
is in Perth. I think Max is going you know
Max lives in Perth. Oh yeah, he would all this
stuff he picked up in Kentucky. Max Duffy went and
saw Tyler Childers in Perth, and I think he's going
(23:38):
to the w as well.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
How's he doing?
Speaker 4 (23:41):
Is he doing coaching? What's he doing?
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Up to now, he really only writes me about like
UK football and then random things we we laugh about
over the year. So I have we haven't. I haven't
got to talk to him about like if about think
he's fine. He's coaching, he's doing he's working with the
group that sends Australian punters to America.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
Uh huh.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
So I do think we have an ind on getting
all the best punters because the organization that sets all
those guys up to come punt in America. I think
he's now going and working for them.
Speaker 5 (24:10):
Well, he's got to be happy with Aiden Larross. The
dude has been great pun of this year. He made
a big tackle to last games. He didn't know if
that's zero rating in his toughness.
Speaker 3 (24:19):
Uh. One person writes text machine, it's ask anything Thursday.
Paying a football coach thirty seven million dollars to go
away as preposterous. I wouldn't do it on principle. I mean,
I don't disagree with you, it is preposterous. It is
a bad principle. At the same time, what else you
gonna do? Cut off your nose despite your face? I mean,
like you can't. Yeah, if you want to gone that bad.
This's what you gotta do. And you made the deal.
(24:41):
I mean, first of all, it's not your money. Secondly,
Mitch made the deal. I mean you won't be mad
at Mitch. Then you can be mad at Mitch. I
think that's completely reasonable. But like, there's a contract.
Speaker 5 (24:55):
The UK football program brings in a lot more than
thirty seven million a year. It's a valuable money maker
for the entire university's athletic budget. He's football, It's why
you have to be successful.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
One person writes Matt. I'd like to ask Mario. He's
worked with you guys for over a year. Now, what
does he think about every member of the group.
Speaker 7 (25:13):
You want me to go like, person by person?
Speaker 3 (25:15):
Yeah, start with Shannon. What do you think about.
Speaker 6 (25:17):
Shannon Shannon's I love Shannon Man. He's very blunt. He
doesn't change his opinion no matter what it is. That's
what I really love about Shannon. Ryan Lemon he's the
goofy out the group, but he's inconsistent. He's definitely inconsistent,
but he's he's genuine and he's probably one of the
he's probably the nicest one out the group. I would
say Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin, funny guy. If you're on
(25:39):
the road with him, stay away from him because see,
he likes the party a lot. But he's he's a
good dude overall. I love I love me some Drew,
Billy Rutledge. Billy doesn't get talked about a lot. He's
Billy's actually a cool dude. I love hanging out with Billy.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
What does Shannon say, You say you don't get he
doesn't get talked about a lot. I said that that's
for good reason.
Speaker 6 (26:03):
And then Matt, Matt is the glue that holds it together.
He doesn't get enough credit as it is. And uh,
I think when.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
He leaves you really get to see like how important
he is. So that that's that's my thing.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Have you enjoyed the job? This is?
Speaker 7 (26:18):
This is the best job in the world. This is
this is what I've been praying for.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
This is like I want to do content creation full
time and I'm doing it now.
Speaker 7 (26:24):
So yeah, I'm loving a job.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
Well, that's very nice.
Speaker 4 (26:27):
He's gonna be a boss someday.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
Stop saying why Matt. He says that to everybody.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
Why do you say that you think they're gonna just
make us all work for him.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
Yeah, he's gonna grow up and be so big, powerful, successful.
He'll hire me someday. It canna be my boss someday.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Well, that's nice, one person writes Matt. When you discuss
the football schedule, you talk about the bad teams, which
is fair. How do you think other teams talk about
us guaranteed win? I mean when they look at the schedule,
they go win without.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
I mean, I we know that though, right, every team
in the SEC puts a big w by Kentucky and
that schedule comes out every single team.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
Yeah, one person rights Matt rad These three opponents in
order of who you want to beat the most this year.
Saint John's Louisville, Arkansas.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
What a great question.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Saint John's last, Like, I'd like to beat Saint John's,
but I mean, I I don't like, I can't believe
I'm saying this, But I don't hold any ill will
towards Rick. Now, I mean I since he's been at
since he's been to Louisville, he's coached in Greece, he's
coached at Iona, he's coached Saint John's. Like, I'm good,
(27:33):
Like I want to beat him, but if he beats us,
what I mean. I was pulling for him last year
when they played Arkansas and in the tournament, Louisville and Arkansas,
it's tough. Both road games will beat you roup last
year what was probably gonna be better than Arkansas This year,
(27:55):
I'm gonna say, I want to beat but Louisll' is
at the beginning of the year. That stinks to dude,
And I'm gonna say I want to beat Arkansas more
just because Louisvill's at the beginning, it's in November and
so like, it's not gonna really matter, whereas Arkansas could
be a game that decides whether or not we win
the SEC this year, honestly, and we lost to him
(28:15):
last year. So I'm gonna say Arkansas won Louisville two,
uh Saint John's three. What about you?
Speaker 5 (28:21):
I think if the Louisville game was in a different spot,
the fact that it's early in the.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
Season, I'm gonna lean with you.
Speaker 5 (28:25):
I'm gonna go Arkansas one, Louisville two, Saint John's three,
just because Arkansas beat us at up beat.
Speaker 3 (28:31):
In our game in November. So I mean, remember we
lost by like did we lose by like twenty five?
To Ohio State last year in the Garden, in the
guard like like, I don't know that games in November.
I mean, the duke thing was awesome, but I don't
know that the losses don't stick with me as much
in November.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
Second week in November and you're playing on a Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
Louis always going to be number one. I don't care
if they play the game in July number one. Louisville
was always going to be number one.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
So you would rather beat louisvillean argatas of course.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Have Louisos during you want to beat him if they're
really bad. You don't want to lose to a really
bad Roval. So I think it's always lovell Arkansas, John.
Speaker 7 (29:07):
I'm going Arkansas.
Speaker 6 (29:08):
We lost to him last year and I was a
bad feeling man I got I'm going Arkansas top of
the list.
Speaker 7 (29:12):
We gotta get him back revenge.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
That's the only reason I don't give Mark Pope and
a plus because they lost to Arkansas at Ropperena at
Cal's first trip back.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
You gotta win that game.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
Yeah know, if we beat him last year, I don't
think I would care.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
I'm with you, if we'd beaten him last year.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Then I would be like, all right, Louisville, yeah, and
then North Carolina. For me, honestly, I'd rather beat North
Carolina than Saint John's. Like Saint John's, I don't can
I mean, do you all consider that like a big rivalry.
It's a neutral court game. I mean, I want to
beat him, but I don't. I'm not gonna be upset
if we lose to Saint John's. North Carolina's here at
(29:46):
nine thirty at nine on a Tuesday. I want to
win that game, you know.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
Yeah, the Saint John's game is just because the guy
sitting on the bench over there, that's it. And the
Saint John's logo doesn't mean anything to any of us.
It's just Patino sitting over there.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
Who's next? Brian, Brian, go ahead, Brian.
Speaker 9 (30:03):
Good morning, everybody listen. I know that thirty seven million dollars,
there's a lot of money. But I was thinking about
this with cal Perry years ago, and now I'm thinking
about it with Mark. Yes, what if he stays just
for the money. But this is a motivated and creative
fan base, and if they decide they don't like Mark Stoops,
(30:24):
it's not just booing him when his name is called.
What they they bought billboards to get people.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
Yeah, but see, I don't want to do that. I
mean I don't I don't want to do it.
Speaker 9 (30:33):
I'm just saying it's gonna.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
So let me go back to Cal for a second.
I appreciate the call when Cal when it looked like
he was going to come back. The thought of that
year when it looked like he was going to come
back was miserable to me because I was like, I
don't want to have a situation where our fans and
the coach have animosity towards each other. Like, there's nothing
good that comes out of that. So if Stoops were
(30:57):
to come back and people were just like make it
miserable over the course of the year, I mean, there's
nothing good that comes out of that.
Speaker 10 (31:05):
Right.
Speaker 5 (31:06):
You know, we've used the word a lot when cal
Pray is at the end of his run. Was if
we were a fractured fan base. We're getting to that
point here in football. You know we're a fractured fan base.
We're winn a second one.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Don't think we're fractured.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
I think everybody's all on board again, and everybody wants
a change.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
Yeah, no, I'm serious with cal there was still a
loud minority of people that liked in the state. Yeah right,
they were very loud. I don't think that exists now, Mario.
Speaker 7 (31:32):
Do you know?
Speaker 6 (31:32):
I think stoops everybody. I haven't met somebody that really
want some to stay we do, any of you?
Speaker 3 (31:39):
I've seen one, I mean we I guess at that
show the other day, we had two people say they
wanted to even stay out of like one hundred and
fifty at Shady Rays.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
I I wish it would work. I would love for
him to be our coach.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
But it's just not okay, So let's talk about let's
let me give you a scenario. See if this would
change anybody's mind. He wins one of Texas in Tennessee,
all right, wins one.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
Of them big that both are home wins one of
Van d Auburn Okay, yeah, beats Louisville.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
Fan base back six wins goes to a ball.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Okay, where so many beats Tennessee Tech.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
So many beats Tennessee Tech. Six wins goes to a ball.
Is the fan base back are they like? I am?
Speaker 4 (32:22):
I mean, yeah, i am, I'm back. If he's able
to pull that off somehow.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Absolutely, it just goes to show you one or two
games here or there can determine they could change your
entire thoughts on a coach and whether he should stay
or not.
Speaker 3 (32:35):
I think there's still be a big chunk of the
fan base that wouldn't be back, but there'd be enough
of them back that you if you're if you're Mitch Martnhart,
you definitely would bring him back.
Speaker 5 (32:44):
Yeah, and you got a couple of big wins. You
beat Louisville, and you beat Tennessee or Texas.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Four wins this year. If you get the six, you
have exceeded X.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Okay, let's say not Tennessee or text. Let's say you
lose to Tennessee and Texas See now two and five,
but then you beat Florida. Yeah, and then you beat
Vandy or Auburn, and then you beat Louisville.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
That's still six. I'm still I'm back. I mean that's
just me. I don't know how lot of the fan
base would be, but I would be excited about they think.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
Florida, Vandy, Louisville keeps your job just getting six wins? Okay,
what if it's just Vandy and Louisville.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
You got five wins.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Five wins.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
Like you said, that's the worst case scenario. That is
the worst case scenario.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
And something that could easily happen. You beat Vandy and
Little remember Vanny Lovill last two games the year, So
you go into those games two and eight. Excuse me,
you go into those games three and seven, But then
you beat Vandy and Louisville.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
In the last sounds like momentum to me. You win
too straight. That's a winnings drenk. You can't fire a
coach on a winnings drink, Clementum, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
That would be That would be the worst scenario. Go
in three and seven and then go beat Bandy on
the road and go beat Little. That would be the.
Speaker 4 (34:03):
Worst That's not crazy.
Speaker 5 (34:05):
So what happens if that if that plays out that
way for another year?
Speaker 3 (34:12):
No, I mean, because I don't think Mitch Barnheart would
fire him in that scenario, do you?
Speaker 4 (34:18):
I don't think you would? But what would our families?
Speaker 3 (34:19):
We'd be on a three game winning streak Tennessee Tech
with Bandy.
Speaker 5 (34:23):
And Lituisville and maybe maybe Cutter Bowly has awesome games
those last year.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
So your future good for next year would.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
Be the scenario that would be the worst. Kentucky State Chambers.
Kentucky State Chamber is working on important issues Kentuckians are facing.
They're tackling significant challenges like childcare access, various work housing availability.
By championing solutions, they're strengthening in communities and helping Kentucky
families thrive. The work supports a brighter future. But learn
(34:49):
more at ky Chamber dot com. It's Kentucky Chamber will
take your calls. Be right back here on Ask Anything Thursday, KSR,
Welcome back, take you sports radio. Hey, I want to
tell her boy something that you might be interested in.
On Monday, the UK School Public Policy is doing the
Wendell Ford Lecture series and it's on NIL. So for
(35:10):
those of you who wonder like what the future of
Nile is, it's open to the public. It's they're having
a person from the Night Commission. They're the people set
in the rules. They're having an attorney who represented a
lot of the players in their lawsuit. And then Mark's
story of the Herald Leader talking about how to affects
Kentucky and I am the moderator.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Oh nice, So you're.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
Gonna have to wear a suit. But so that is
Monday at five thirty at the Kentucky Singletary Center for
the Arts. This is like an expert panel and if
you've ever not me, but the but the people on it,
and if you've ever wondered like where's college sports going?
I think this is like as good a group as
you could get five thirty at UK they have like
(35:52):
three hundred seats in the auditorium, so make sure to
get there early. But at the Windle it's the Wendell
Ford Lecture Series at the Singletary Center for the Art
and I'm the moderator for it, so that should be exciting.
Speaker 4 (36:03):
There'll be a streaming availability.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
I don't think it's streaming that I know of. If
it is, i'll send the link out, but I don't
I don't think.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
So you've got your list of questions ready to go.
Speaker 3 (36:14):
I'm gonna work on it this weekend. I was in
a meeting with everybody. I kind of know what's what
everybody does the but it's a it looks like a
good group and I think it'll be it'll be very interesting.
If I'm nine two eight h twenty two eighty seven.
Who's next ship, Dalton, Dalton, go ahead, Dalton man.
Speaker 10 (36:31):
You're such a proficient linguist. You said Ryan operates in
those circles. I knew exactly what you meant, blowing leaves
or parking cars.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
No, that's not what you're going riot in all their clubs.
I can't even get into those clubs right secret.
Speaker 10 (36:46):
Yeah, yeah, I've got an interesting thing on the buyouts
and listening to you this morning, so, I mean, it
is ridiculous that they have all these these huge price
eggs to not work. Yeah, but when you're getting that
coach and you get that contract, you put that in
there in fear of he gets good and somebody with.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
Because that's exactly right, that's why you do it.
Speaker 10 (37:08):
But on the opposite, when they're not doing good, well,
nobody's gonna give you that money. So you got to
get rid of it correctly with the nil dollars and
more the rev share right in Barnhardt allocating twelve thirteen,
fourteen million dollars a year, you've just stopped giving Mark
Soups that rev share money.
Speaker 3 (37:30):
Yeah, but again, somebody suggested that yesterday. But why do
you want to do why do you want to do that.
I mean, why do you want to make it to
where I mean, you're Let's say you make the decision
that you have to hang on, hang on, hang on,
hang on. Let's say you have to make the decision
to bring Mark Stoops back. Why in the world would
you want to make it to where he doesn't have
(37:51):
a team. What good does that do?
Speaker 11 (37:55):
What you tell?
Speaker 10 (37:56):
You tell him that some of those dollars that are
going to the football program were leaving. Maybe he can
go shape that out of his bayo.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Yeah, but why would you do that? You're just cutting
off your You're just cutting off your nose to spite
your face. What is the point of if you have
to bring him back putting a horrible team around me? Like?
Who does that help?
Speaker 4 (38:14):
Well?
Speaker 10 (38:15):
And if he wants to still coach, how does that
help him?
Speaker 4 (38:18):
It helps him because he's.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
Still getting well. I can tell you that here's the answer.
It helps him because he's still getting his money. Right, So,
I mean, I appreciate the call. Let's use that scenario
where you say, Okay, if you're coming back, we're taking
the money we would have had to pay you out
of the riv share. Well, what are you doing then, well,
you're guaranteeing our football team will stink. And guess what,
(38:40):
Mark Stoops gets a lot of money, the same money.
So Mark Stoops gets something. What do we get out
of that?
Speaker 7 (38:47):
Nothing?
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Nothing. We don't get.
Speaker 5 (38:50):
We don't get players, We don't get a coach to replace.
Coach wants to come and replace Mark Stupid to that
what fans want to go.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
To the games. So you may have made a prince.
That makes you feel good. Yeah, big boy, if you
come back, you're not gonna have money for players. But
all you've done is hurt yourself. He's still getting his
mind mad scenario, So that to me is the worst idea.
If you're bring him back, you have to try to
have a good team. Why would you not.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
Like we said, SEC football is the biggest money maker
on every campus. This supports the whole athletic budget. You
have to be successful, and that's also true.
Speaker 3 (39:24):
Coaches would be like, well, so that's how you treat
your coaches.
Speaker 4 (39:27):
Yeah, that your coach is gonna come and place and
you can give.
Speaker 3 (39:29):
Them no players when things don't go.
Speaker 4 (39:31):
With players no money.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Yeah, I don't think that works. Who's next? Rob, Rob?
Go ahead, Rob.
Speaker 12 (39:37):
Hey, guys, hope you're having a good morning. I got
a quick basketball question and a quick football question if
you don't mind.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
Yes, So, given that.
Speaker 12 (39:46):
Tyron stokes birthday is Sunday, do you do you think
that it's possible that he could commit Saturday at Big
Blue Madness, which, well.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
There's been a lot of people so Tyron Stokes number
one player in the country, there's been a lot of
people who believe he might commit tomorrow. I don't know
what it is about tomorrow. His birthday is Sunday, Big
Blue Madness is Saturday. There are people in his camp
who he's not taking any more visits. So I mean,
I think if you were to place money on it,
(40:13):
you would say this weekend is the most likely time
it would happen. It would be the biggest commitment for
Kentucky in probably a decade if he were to do it. So,
I mean, it's a big deal. I don't think it'll
have anything to do with Big Blue Madness. I think
it would probably have to do with his personal life
and when he does it.
Speaker 12 (40:32):
Gotcha, gotcha? Okay. Football question is if if somehow an
undefeated Tennessee Tech team comes into Croker Field and beats
Mark Stoops.
Speaker 8 (40:42):
Is that is that?
Speaker 3 (40:44):
Yeah? Suits bad? I mean, if you lost Tennessee Tech,
I appreciate the call. If you lost Tennessee Ka Tech,
you probably fire him right after the game, right That
would be a scenario. That'd be the only scenario where
I could see that you would let him go mid season?
Is if you lost?
Speaker 2 (40:58):
What if you had just beaten Tech, Texas and Tennessee
but you don't bire them, then.
Speaker 3 (41:08):
Actually that would be the worst scenario. Beat Texas and
Tennessee but then lose to Tennessee Tech, Vandy and Louisville
back to back to in the finish.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Could almost see something crazy like that happened. Maybe not
beat both of them, but maybe maybe beat Tennessee but
lose to Tennessee Tech.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
That would be the worst because you would be five
and seven but have lost. You had to do is
beat Tennessee Tech to go to a bowl and then
you lost.
Speaker 5 (41:32):
And pa Tennessee Tech is good. They're scoring like sixty
points a game. They're like really good.
Speaker 3 (41:38):
Ye, Tenessee Tech is undefeated. We're gonna be them though,
Like come on, you don't really think we're gonna lose
to them.
