This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Now here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
Welcome everyone.
Speaker 6 (00:37):
It is Kentucky Sports Radio, Monday, December fifteenth. I'm Matt
Jones here on a cold but sunny day in Lexington, Kentucky.
Speaker 5 (00:45):
You can give a show.
Speaker 6 (00:46):
Clarks Puppy Shop phone line eight five nine two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven. A Vision Autoglass text machine
is seven seven two seven four five two five four.
This edition sponsored by the T. J. Smith Office called
TJ You'll make them pay ten days before Christmas. And
finally a game after we beat somebody good in basketball.
(01:07):
All right, Kentucky beats Indiana on Saturday night seventy two sixty.
You can give a shout love to hear from you
A five nine, two eight, twenty two eighty seven. Ryan
is out today, So it is me and Drew and
Shannon and the Cats had a miserable first half on
Saturday night, but then maybe they're the best they've played
(01:29):
this season in the second half to beat the Hoosiers
in the first time they've played each other in ten years. Drew,
I don't know how you can't be pleased with the result.
What looked like it might be another night towards misery
ends up very posit. Yeah, ugly first half.
Speaker 7 (01:45):
You went into halftime down, didn't want that at all,
But then you get that big run right out of halftime,
Otaga away hit of three, and then they're off, and
you know, the big story is just we saw you've
been waiting for these guys that been injured to come play.
We saw what happens with Low and dia Bote healthy
and made a difference because Low played about every minute
after halftime and diabat two and they were they were
(02:05):
the difference makers that helped wield them to that twelve
point win.
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Never sold my low stock. Held on, I held on.
Speaker 6 (02:12):
I was what did they say during the UH during
all the tech thing, it was diamonds. I was diamond
hands on low and I think you saw why. And
then we said I was obviously a great game from
Diabate too. I mean, you know the optimist view, and
they were getting to be fewer and fewer these people.
But the optimist view was, look two, three of the
(02:33):
five guys that people thought would be the best on
the team are not playing.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
And that's part of it. But you really saw it
Saturday night.
Speaker 6 (02:40):
I mean you saw it when we started the game
and we were bad, and then we even started the
second half and we were bad. And then all of
a sudden they were like, why don't we put the
good players in? And then all of a sudden it's
a different team.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
And they fixed two of the things that had really
been haunting him. They haven't been rebounding well.
Speaker 7 (02:56):
And Diabat goes in there and we saw what he
does that clip where there's.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
That's an amazing play.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
I was an Indiana fan that because that was the
basketbare we took the lead that we never gave back
was on that play.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
Just that screenshot.
Speaker 7 (03:09):
It's five Indiana players and mo By himself and he
comes up with that rebound and then you know, the offense,
even in the first half has not been good. It's
been very stagnant. It was hard to watch. But then
when Low checks in, he just gets the ball moving
and gets the flow going, unlike anyone else on the
face half was.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Kind of unwatchable across the boarder I wasn't. I mean,
both both teams looked miserable, and yet they led by seven,
which at the time felt like twenty five points.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
And then.
Speaker 6 (03:38):
You know, people are gonna get tired of me saying this,
but it's true. It's just a different team with Jay Low.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
It just is.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
I mean, I don't I want to give Diaborte a
ton of credit. I want to Garrison a ton of credit.
Thought he played really well, Came Williams played well away,
I thought played well. But it's the difference on offense
between Low and not Low.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
It's there.
Speaker 6 (03:58):
It's a different team, just a completely different team.
Speaker 7 (04:02):
Yeah, he not only gets a moving and then of
the offense the Pope ones, but even little things like
that step back he hit.
Speaker 6 (04:08):
You know, not we don't have anyone else team that.
We have no one else who could do that shot.
We have no one else who can break a guy
down like that, step back and hit a floater. We
have guys that'll try it, We have guys that'll try
it a lot, unfortunately, but we don't have anyone who
can consistently do that. He missed two layups, but no
one else gets to the basket like that. I know
we missed the layups, but like, he's just a different dude,
(04:31):
and it felt like you were watching him in that
second half find his confidence again. Now he's gonna drive
us crazy. He won't drive me crazy because I'm gonna
accept it, but he's gonna drive some of our fans
because he miss his layups and he takes some shots
for you go.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
But the rest of its way too positive to get
to get past.
Speaker 8 (04:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (04:50):
Here lately the offense has been so bad. Sure have
a few miss layups and union plays if you want.
I think the whole team was like fourteen of twenty.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
Eight on layups. We missed.
Speaker 7 (04:58):
The layups were terrible. It should have been a lot
better for Kentucky. But yeah, having those guys back, and then,
as you mentioned, Garrison my MVP pick off the bench
playing real well.
Speaker 6 (05:08):
Yeah, a couple things second half, almost no substitutions. I
mean basically occasionally would put in, would let somebody get
a breather to put in Aberdeen for a minute. But
basically he was like, I'm going with low O Way, Williams,
Garrison and Diabate, which is a weird lineup, very big lineup.
(05:30):
I don't know if you can do that against a
lot of teams. But Indiana was small, so I think
it worked, and they weren't hitting threes.
Speaker 7 (05:35):
Yeah, I'm with the way In, Garrison and Diabat there playing.
I mean Yellowtch didn't get a single minute. I think
that was just because there was guys playing so well
said it was a matchup issue.
Speaker 6 (05:44):
Yeah, it's interesting because you would think on paper, Yellovich
looks like he could play for Indiana.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
At least give him a little bit of run.
Speaker 7 (05:54):
We won, but no, it shows you how well the
other guys are playing and didn't really play. Yeah, and
I mean Jack got in early, he only played a
couple of minutes and never went back to that when
he got to the second half, he just kind of
stuck with his guy.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Moreno didn't really play in the second half much.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
I mean, but if you think about it, that lineup
we saw on the floor in the second half is
more like the lineup we thought.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
We were gonna see this year. Right.
Speaker 6 (06:14):
If you had asked me at the end of the year,
who's gonna start, you probably well, we did start the
year with Lowe was not playing, but we knew he'd play.
Low Oway, Garrison, Diabate. Now you probably would have thought
maybe Aberdeen instead of Williams, but otherwise that's who you
thought was gonna start. It's funny we've now circled back
full to kind of where we were to begin with.
Speaker 7 (06:35):
And it is weird too. They they're kind of winning
with defense like good. It's thrown me off though, because
of Pope offense high scoring make threes when that lineup's
out there. They don't have a lot of shooters, but
they've been locking teams down.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
I am now all in on this on Terrence Ogles,
I'm gonna do something rare, Shannon, I'm gonna have a
guest on the show sometime this week. Oh really, I
don't like guests. Well, I mean, I like the idea
of guests.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
It is usually the only one that ever comes on here.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
Yeah, you too, big ut big hair.
Speaker 6 (07:04):
But like I don't like basketball analyst guess because there
are because like it's.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
You know whatever, it's party.
Speaker 6 (07:09):
But I'm gonna probably have Terrence ogles Be just a
man crush Brewer. I think I have a little bit
of a Terrence ogles Be man crushed because when he
talks about Kentucky, I feel like like he gets and
ogles Be said, look, you, at this point, you know
that this roster was.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
Not worth twenty two million dollars. He was like, it's.
Speaker 6 (07:29):
Clear they need a GM, and they screwed up the
roster's he said this last night on the Field of
sixty eight. But he said, at this point, your team
is your team, right, So you screwed that up. You
fix that in the off season. You hire GM. I
think he said, whoever decided who to pay these people,
they don't have that job anymore.
Speaker 5 (07:49):
That's okay, fair, that's fair.
Speaker 6 (07:50):
Yeah, But he said, now that this is your team,
he was like, now you got to just do what
you got and he was like, this should be a
defensive dirty dog, rebounding, fouling, like that's what he's got
to be and he's like, Mark needs to understand the
way he wants to play basketball. He can't play it
with these guys. They're just gonna have to be what
they are. And he said the second half of Indiana
(08:12):
seemed like that could be the start of that. I
like that analysis.
Speaker 7 (08:16):
Yeah, that's not what anyone expected. It's probably not not
even what Pope wants to do. But we saw that's
just how Diabante plays, and he has to be on
the court when Quainton's come comes back. He's a little
bit more of defense than offense. Otega when he wants
to has that toughness in and they're really built for Aberdeen.
Speaker 5 (08:31):
So we should just be a dirty dog team. We
should be. We're gonna end up being a cow team.
Speaker 6 (08:38):
Without the athletes, and we're having to wait until March
for him to.
Speaker 9 (08:43):
Put it together.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
But I think that's what we have to be. It's
exactly what we have to be, a.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Dirty dog team that plays low and away the whole game.
That three spot probably alternates between you know, Aberdeen Chandler.
If he's hot, Williams plays the three, sometimes plays the four.
If Garrison's hustling, you put him in. If he's not.
(09:07):
You don't if like that's gonna be the team. I
think our guy Trent Noah that that might be the
last we see of him, Benna starting bro that's probably
it for him unless something.
Speaker 7 (09:17):
Would you agree with that agree and it needs to happen.
I mean, the guy, he just doesn't have that gear
that Cam Williams those guys have.
Speaker 6 (09:24):
Jess Johnson just may not play this year and that
can't be what he thought was gonna happen. But I
think that team you saw in the second half is
the best chance for this team to be successful.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
These other guys have had a chance.
Speaker 6 (09:37):
I mean, Chandler's had a chance, Like I think he's
gonna play this year, but him being the big time score,
he's gonna cold. We're just not gonna be good. If
he's we're.
Speaker 7 (09:48):
Gonna have to be winning sixty seven sixty Maybe we
could yo go as they go down.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
We're gonna have.
Speaker 6 (09:53):
To win sixty seven to sixty three and it's gonna
be ugly, and we're gonna shoot every time we make
a three, gonna thank the Lord on our knees like
a shot went in.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Sheddon.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Yes, you're not gonna win too. Many games that way, though,
I don't think and the sixties.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Now, yes, but the SEC is different this year. None
of these teams are really good offensively. I mean Alabama
only scored what sixty some against Arizona.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Arizona, this was a different year. Tennessee kinda isn't the same.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
If you told me that Kentucky was gonna shoot three
of fifteen from threes and win by twelve, I would
say there's no way, but they did.
Speaker 6 (10:30):
I agree with you, But I think that's what I think.
That's what we're gonna have to do. We're gonna have
to win games in the seventies, right, We're gonna have
like our point total. We're probably gonna say if we
score seventy five, you know, because that team can play
good defense, it's like.
Speaker 7 (10:46):
The only thing they can looks like they can consistently
do well at this point.
Speaker 5 (10:50):
I agree. And Indiana, remember they had scored one hundred
and seventeen their last game against Penn State, against a
Big ten team.
Speaker 7 (10:56):
And even in the loss to North Carolina, you played
good defense and the game you just couldn't score.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
So that is that.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
I think that's the method to win. And I don't
know if people want that, but I think it has
to be. And then sometimes you're just gonna have to
let Jaylen Low cook, right, You just gonna have to
let him cook.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Somehow our basketball team has turned into our football team.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
But it's the only chance. It's the only chance.
Speaker 6 (11:19):
Like we can't zooms and we can't you know, we
can't do anything. We're just gonna have to, like, you know,
Barkley and I want to talk about Barkley.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
But Barkley said that at the start of the game.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
At the start of the game, Barkley was like, they
just need to throw the ball against the rim and
go get rebounds.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
I mean, maybe he's right. I mean, you're right.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
This is a cow team without the elite athletes. This
is like a cow team. I don't know, this is
like a cow team and everyone's davyond.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
Min a colt team without NBA players.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
I think it is. But you can win a bunch
of games like that. I don't know if you you
can't win a title like that, but you can win
a bunch of games.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
And I think Drew that that's just what we're gonna
have to be.
Speaker 7 (12:01):
I think so too. I you know, I don't see
them getting in the nineties. Even like last year. You
just they can hang with some teams. Even when you
played Alabama, you loss, you're still putting up points. I
just don't see this team being able to score like that.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
Well let's stay Let's say you played like you did
against the second half against every team.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
Okay, how would our record be different? All right? I
think we beat North Carolina if we play like that, fair, Yeah,
because they were scoring defense.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
Was about to say we lose Toga, even we probably
lose to gonzag either way.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
Yeah, probably lose to Louisville either way.
Speaker 6 (12:34):
I think the Michigan State's a game if you play
like that. That's how I would look at and say,
if we'd been playing like that all year, we're not
gonna beat Louisville when they scored ninety five, and we're
not gonna beat Gonzaga when they scored ninety five. But
we could have beat we should, we would have beaten
North Carolina, and we'd have had a shot against Michigan State.
That's kind of how I look at it, and I
think that's how this year is gonna have to play out.
(12:55):
I think that at the end of that game, Mark
Pope had to probably just had to go back in
the locker and go, I guess this is who we are.
I guess I recruited a team because I think Ogleby's right,
you learn from this and say this. I'll never do
this again in terms of how I build a team.
But now that I have them, I gotta find the
best way to win.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
Yeah, we keep We've been asking what do they do?
Speaker 8 (13:17):
Well?
Speaker 5 (13:17):
What is their identity?
Speaker 7 (13:18):
You finally found something you can hang on to, especially
if you're getting minutes like that from Brandon Garrison Diabote,
You're gonna get that consistently. But if if they're playing
as tough, as physical as they finally wear Saturday night,
then they have something.
Speaker 6 (13:29):
I'm all in on Ja. He's out there playing with
one arm and he's still cooking people.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
I like what he said after the game about how
bad he wanted to come back for his teammates, because
I wondered, you know, does this guy does he need
to come back for them?
Speaker 6 (13:41):
He's got a he's got a bow in his hair, right,
you should put one in your hair.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
He's got a little bow symbolic. Well, what did what
you call it? A little bunk?
Speaker 6 (13:51):
Sorry, I said, bow, that's not it's not like I
guess it's not a buw.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
It's more of a bun. That's a different I don't
why said like tough. Dove on the floor. Dove on
the floor.
Speaker 6 (14:03):
If you notice when he runs, he is trying not
to get hit on that other arm. He almost runs sideways,
but I don't. When he dove for the ball, I
screamed no. Everybody else is like wow. I was like, no,
don't do that because if we lose him, forget it.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
Yeah, right, forget it.
Speaker 7 (14:20):
Kind of remind me of Lamont Butler when he would
kind of just know that he would dip that shoulder a.
Speaker 5 (14:25):
Little bit and crooked.
Speaker 6 (14:27):
He should walk shitting like like the hump back an
old day. He should walk with one arm, like, don't
get hit in that arm again.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Yeah, don't drive either, like just stay back.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
There or only drive left, Okay, right, I.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
Don't want him driving at all. Just stay out of
the lane.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
Like we don't need that, we need some of that driving.
We just need bubble wrapped around that.
Speaker 6 (14:47):
Yeah, eight five nine eight twenty two eighty seven Text
machinet seven seven two seven four five two five four
We'll talk Barkley, my vital and Mererican Chicken website.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
Still down crazy. I haven't done that in a while. Yeah,
that's right. We do need to be nasty dogs. Eight.
Speaker 6 (15:06):
I'm eighty seven, uh one person of text Machine Rights. Matt,
you're alls in now. I love you all, but you're
alls analysis and this game's awful. Well, I think you're awful.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
You got him, that's all.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
I said that too. Yeah, I think they're awful.
Speaker 6 (15:25):
The analysis is dead on. Andy said, you say, let
low cook. Who's he gonna cook? The fact that you
think he's Fox or Wall is delusion. I don't think
he's Fox or Wall. He's not even close to Fox
or Wall. But he's the only player we have who
can beat his man off the dribble, the only one.
He's the only player we have who can initiate it offense.
He's the only player we have who plays point guard
(15:47):
who doesn't look like he just discovered basketball when he's
the point guard.
Speaker 7 (15:52):
Right, there were some ugly shots in that Aberdeen.
Speaker 6 (15:56):
I love Aberdeen because I think he's gonna do big
things for us. But Dean literally just waves everybody off,
and he's like, Okay, it's Devin Booker time and then
shoots an airball. Low is our only point guard. And
we've played really well this year against good teams twice.
True about an eight to ten minute stretch against Louisville
(16:17):
when we came back from twenty two down to get
it to one possession. Who cooked Low? And then the
second half that's it. So the common denominator is him.
Now I'm making it a given that Diabate plays like
that and the old way hustles, and I'm because if
that doesn't happen, forget it. But the one thing that
(16:39):
we have that no one else can do is run
to point like Low. So I'm gonna be out there
with that sword that meme fighting the British.
Speaker 7 (16:49):
You mean John Snow on Game of Thrones, for they're
all running at him and he pulls.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
The sword out. Is that John?
Speaker 7 (16:55):
I mean some of the people run down could have
been British, but I think they're like White Walker's So
it's not from Braveheart, No, no, no, the one I'm
thinking of John Snow in Game Okay. So I'm so
I'm gonna be John Snow, John Snow okay for for
Jay and Low, because he's my guy.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
And I don't know why people would be negative to
it towards him.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
Shit, have you ever even held a sword before in
real life?
Speaker 5 (17:18):
No, let's start there. Yeah, let's get there's a good
chance I would hurt myself.
Speaker 7 (17:24):
I think that shows how excited you are that you're
willing to wield a sword for the first sight.
Speaker 5 (17:28):
And I'll take you.
Speaker 6 (17:28):
The last person I was like this with was Antonio Reeves.
I was like, come on, play the dude, let him cook,
and then everybody and then all of a sudden, dude
was great. I'm not I don't think he's as good
as Antonio Reeves. He's shooting like sixteen percent from three,
So I'm not saying shoot all the time. I'm just saying,
have him in the game.
Speaker 7 (17:48):
I agree with you, because in that first half there's
even some text messages that I should probably delete. I
was so angry with that offense. I mean they were
just It wasn't just Aberdeen. I mean Chandler would turn
down and open three and just go run into the
trees and throw it up missile layup. No one was
taking it.
Speaker 6 (18:04):
I like Aberdeen's reverse layup that went just straight up
in the air, and that was the worst shot of it.
Speaker 4 (18:09):
For at least it went up.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
I mean to start, guys, go straight into the ground.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
When jayal love flex is, I would I would say, though,
don't flex.
Speaker 7 (18:20):
You don't have any bus and it's unnecessary shoulder movement.
Speaker 6 (18:25):
It's true, be careful with your should did you so you?
Did you ever listen to Barclay? I wanted to go back.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
I loved it. Did you you liked it?
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Yes? But I thought there was too much split screen,
Like I can hear you. I don't need to see you.
I don't need to see Dick Vtel kissing Charles Barkley
on the chee.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
I don't have that.
Speaker 6 (18:43):
I like the kiss because I thought it was a
sweet moment. I agree with you, though, when the game
is going on, I.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
Don't need to search the game. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:50):
I didn't need to see them, But in terms of
I didn't care that they talked about other stuff, you
know what I mean?
Speaker 5 (18:56):
What else that? Who who cares what they say?
Speaker 4 (18:58):
We see what's happening on the screen.
Speaker 6 (19:00):
Yes, I did like that he called Shack a fat ass.
He one hundred thousand dollars. Yeah, that was kind of
a nice moment, right.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Yeah, I like that you could tell that those two
guys have that friendship where you could say that and
not get mad at each other.
Speaker 6 (19:12):
It's Claire Barkley never seen either team play. Yeah, ever
had no idea who was on our team? Like when
Low came in, he was.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
Like, who's this kid? You know he can't This is
the greatest kid I've ever seen. Couldn't be bothered to
do his research.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
I had no idea, But I'm fine with that because
you know what his analysis on our team, Shannon, I
think was better than anyone else's I've heard.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Maybe only you will get this reference.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
But it's like when the WWF put Art Donovan on commentary,
He's like, how.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
Much does this guy way? That was basically Charles Barkley.
Speaker 6 (19:44):
Is a crazy reference, And then I think it's good.
Like it was clear he and Vitel had affection for
each other and that was nice. He was rooting for
us openly, Like don't you agree, Shannon?
Speaker 10 (19:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (19:58):
I mean if I was in Indiana, fan, I'd be living.
He had literally at one point said get in.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
It's sec. At one point there was a shot and
he goes, get in.
Speaker 7 (20:09):
I didn't hear, but I had multiple friends text me,
Barkley must have money on this game.
Speaker 5 (20:13):
He had to have bet on Kentucky.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
He had to have He literally was wishing the ball
to go in for us.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
So I I enjoyed it. He clearly loves rup.
Speaker 6 (20:22):
He said it was a religious experience when he came
in for the first time.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
Do we get these guys one more game?
Speaker 8 (20:28):
Now?
Speaker 6 (20:28):
They're well, they're doing like an NCAA tournament game, like
a first four gain. So this is their only regular
season game though.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
I thought it was good, and he.
Speaker 6 (20:35):
Said that merrick In Chicken was the best chicken he's
ever had. He said they must have a little bitty
black lady in the back cooking it, which you could tell.
Vital got a look on his face. It was like,
can I say anything? I don't know if I can
say anything. What can I say? Just let it go?
(20:56):
And Charles was like, Charles's the only person who can
get away with just saying that. But it's obviously knows
his LExEN and chicken. So American websitees now crashed. I
don't think anyone in the city has thought about eating
at the American in a long time, except Billy Once
Billy Clyde jumped in the pool, still holding up.
Speaker 7 (21:15):
Well over there, I've been this calendar year. You have,
you gotta go check in on that chicken. Everyone's of course,
is that what they're known for. I mean, you can
get other things, but I've I've never been and I.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
Gotten the chick. Now I think I'm gonna have to go.
And I haven't been in years.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
That used to be the place when my when when
I always thought of it as like an old person
place right you went, because you know, my my, my
dad's brother. It was the old minister at Crestwood Church.
And I always knew if we're eating with them big Sundays,
we're going to American. I just always knew, like, okay,
(21:52):
we're eating with Dave and Julia, this is a Merican night.
But now I feel like it's revitalized because Charles gave
it the the bomb.
Speaker 7 (22:01):
Yeah, it's it's definitely kind of an older election in tradition,
you know, after church especially, but.
Speaker 5 (22:07):
They're still they're still go doing well.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
Yeah, got a great patio out there. I throw in
on the free pub for and.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
The Billy Gillespie thing that was always the most legendary
Billy Gillaspie Store.
Speaker 7 (22:16):
Well, that's what I knew it for for many years,
just the thing I only went actually tried.
Speaker 6 (22:20):
I was like, man, things have changed since I used
to go to American with David Julia. Billy's got his
shirt off at the American Pool. We never heard though,
was that story true or not? No, for that one
stands out American and it was true.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
I was there.
Speaker 7 (22:35):
But those those two like stick out as Billy Gillespie
hotspots from the rumors back in the day.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
Yeah, what we say about rubies now? That was the
American Pool and Shinaway Pub.
Speaker 7 (22:46):
It was just like a nod to anyone that goes
out lexing and knows you'll see them there all the time.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Right.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
I will take your calls if I'm nine eight twenty
two eighty seven. Right after this, I do love to
dig By Towel. Those are two of my favorite people.
And then being on a Kentucky game was very cool.
We'll be right back, SKISR.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
TJ. Smith, personal injury attorney called TJ. He'll make them pay.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
Here's Matt Jones.
Speaker 5 (23:10):
Buns not not bus.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
Yeah, man, Bunn.
Speaker 6 (23:13):
Yeah, somebody tweet a picture of what they said. I
thought Jay when low looked like with a bow, I
meant bun group of fingers. People say also to kill
yet at America in I've had those before always I
feel like they also it's always hard to park there
because they have a lot, but it can get pretty full.
Speaker 5 (23:32):
You know what's happened in play.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
Still what it certainly is now can't even get on
the website. Uh, I'm nine twenty two eighty seven. I
want to give Shan a real quick quick shout out
of something I didn't catch. What's that you did last week?
Your music is always brilliant. I did not catch how
brilliant it was though last week when we were talking
about Philip Rivers and you played old Man.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
River, How did you not get that? I thought that
was obvious.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
I thought, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (23:59):
I thought I sang the song like Antonio Hill, but
on Antonio Hall. But I didn't make the connection Philip
Rivers Old Man that was brilliant? How did I not
catch that in the moment? So I wanted to make
sure I gave you a salute from Afar.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
About that one.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Unfortunately he didn't get the win. But he you know,
he played decent. I guess for a man who hasn't
been in the NFL in four years.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
Yeah, I want to talk about him a little bit
later on person right, Matt's we have plenty of shooters.
Speaker 5 (24:24):
Noah, Chandler, Cam, They all can shoot.
Speaker 6 (24:27):
I don't know why people think we don't have shooters
because they haven't made them. I mean again, cal Line
got a lot of shooters that have a lot of makers.
You can tell me all day. Those guys can shoot.
Until they start making them in games, it doesn't really matter, right, Yeah,
what he said, I don't need you to make them all.
You just can't miss them all.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (24:42):
I mean Chadler was making them earlier in the year,
but he started this game not good.
Speaker 7 (24:47):
Yeah, and they kind of patted the stats a little
against those teams bring three hundred in the big games, though,
when the lights are on, they have been hitting them
like they need to.
Speaker 5 (24:55):
That's North Carolina especially. Owl Go ahead, al.
Speaker 10 (25:00):
Hey, good morning, good morning. Quick question, quick question before
I get to my point. What is the text number?
You said so fast I can never write it down?
Speaker 5 (25:09):
Seven seven to two seven seven four five two five four.
Speaker 10 (25:16):
Gotcha. Okay. I was talking to a buddy of mine
a couple of times last few days about this JMI
situation and the fact that we haven't signed a high
level basketball recruit. He says, if there's a problem with
the JMI thing, why are we signing recruits in every
other support that we have?
Speaker 5 (25:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (25:35):
All right, so so so Mitch spoke about the JMI
thing on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (25:41):
I listened to his comments. I am I didn't.
Speaker 6 (25:47):
I don't feel like I learned a lot, But I
also want to I'm hoping to this week have some
conversations to ask some of my questions. So I'm gonna
hold off on commenting on what he said. But to
as to your overall, I would answer it like this.
I do think that there's a difference in signing run
(26:07):
of the mill players and elite players. Those guys are
looking for different things. So I think we've seen that
the JM ideal with UK can do some positive things
for your average guy, like on the football team. Remains
to be seen what can happen with the elite basketball players.
But I think, like when you're talking about an offensive
lineman for football, what those guys are looking for and
(26:31):
what the number three player in American basketball is looking
for in their deal are two different things. Does that
make sense?
Speaker 10 (26:38):
Okay, yeah, I got you. Now I'm gonna make one
last point too. I like the way you talk about
Jalen Lowe, and I do think we can shoot better
once we have effective point guard play, which is just
the old school take it in the lane and then
kick it out. But we're not getting set up for
three point shots. We don't have players that can shoot
(27:00):
off the dribble like Reed Shepherd and guys like that.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
You're exactly right.
Speaker 10 (27:04):
I do have guys exactly.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
Okay, thank you appreciate Cad. He's exactly right about that.
Speaker 6 (27:11):
We need guys who can go in, draw a double team,
kick it out, and because we haven't had guys who
can finish at the rim, they never draw a double team,
so when they they never get somebody open to kick
it out.
Speaker 7 (27:24):
And that's Pope's whole offense, Like I mean, they can't
get in and do any of the things that he
wants to do, and the way he coaches without someone
that can penetrate, and Low's the only one on the
team that has shown he can do it consistently.
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Yeah, oh way. Teams are just saying beat our man
one on one, Hey Chandler, can you take your man
one on one? Hey Aberdeen. We're waving everybody off, but
can you take him one on one? And they really
have not been able to. Jasper Johnson can take a
guy off the dribble, but he hasn't shown the ability
necessarily to find the open man.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
And then now jaylen Lowe is.
Speaker 6 (27:56):
The one who seems to be I mean that play
on back to back play he drove the lane or
three straight plays. One of them he got the layup,
he missed it, but it was an open layup. The
next one he came and he kicked it out for
a three. I believe Cam Williams made it. I could
be wrong. And then the third one he stopped on
a dime and hit the mid range and you saw
(28:18):
right there why he's so valuable.
Speaker 7 (28:21):
In that little set of plays and getting into the
lane and kicking it back out from threes really might
be what he does best. There's a quote from Pat
Kelsey last year when he played against Himtpitt and he's like,
that's just what he's raving about. He's like, right when
you think you have low, he kicks it back out
to a wide open shooter. It's like he has eyes
on the back of his head or can make that
wrap around pass to the corry.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
He's done a few times.
Speaker 6 (28:40):
That's that's one of his interior pass as well, where
he kind of that was it when he kind of
went out.
Speaker 5 (28:45):
That's a great pass and that's what he does well.
Speaker 7 (28:47):
But he also needs those guys to catch and shoot
and be ready and knock it down around him.
Speaker 5 (28:51):
Will go ahead, Will.
Speaker 9 (28:54):
Hey, good morning, fellas. Hope you audi got his weekend
as I did. Cat Way definitely helps.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
But I was just say I had to had to call.
Speaker 9 (29:02):
In and just say I'm really glad I was wrong.
I was the guy that called in and said we
need to spread it out like Mike Leach. I think
we need to bang it in, be like the Grizzlies
of the old days with Zach Randolph. Screw everything that was.
That was beautiful basketball, but also the ugliest game I've
watched in a while.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
First half the worst half of basketball Washington A long.
Speaker 6 (29:23):
Yeah, I mean it was awful and and but you know,
but our defense. Part of why it was so good
is Indiana moster points came at the free throw line.
They shot free throws really well, but we did not
give We did not give them open looks. And that
was a team that makes appreciate the call a ton
of threes and we kept them from doing that.
Speaker 7 (29:41):
Yeah, I mean they were ice cold early. That was
one of the reasons Kentucky's able to stay in the game.
And Wilkerson still had fifteen points, but I mean he
averages nineteen. They held him below his average and foul
trouble really helped with him.
Speaker 6 (29:53):
Wilkerson's fourth game, eighteen minutes in the second half. That
was a massive play in the game. By the way,
back to the field of sixty eight, I think Doug Gottlieb
came on there Saturday night.
Speaker 5 (30:05):
He might have been drunk. Someone sent that to me
and said, I'm like, Doug's feeling good. I turned it on.
Speaker 6 (30:10):
I mean, I'm not saying he wasn't sloppy shitting it,
but there was a little bit. At one point he
said he was going to kiss Jeff Goodman on the mouth,
and he was very chatty.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
He kept interrupting the other guys. First off, has he
have time to do?
Speaker 4 (30:24):
Is he still coaching?
Speaker 5 (30:24):
That team that he still does a daily radio show,
and he checked into this from my living room.
Speaker 6 (30:30):
It was midnight on a Saturday, and he's like, Jeff Goodman,
I will kiss you on the mouth.
Speaker 5 (30:36):
I was like, whoa, don't you have a game?
Speaker 2 (30:40):
Like?
Speaker 5 (30:41):
What a bizarre thing? Steve go ahafter dark? After dark?
Speaker 2 (30:46):
Yeah, Steve, Well, yes, Jay always down.
Speaker 6 (30:56):
Our phone's not working, Steve. I'm sorry you're going in there.
Speaker 5 (31:00):
Trevor. Go ahead, Trevor.
Speaker 11 (31:03):
He Matt, this is Trevor out of London. Before I
get to my question, it sounds like the American might
be a great place for Ryan to do one of
his solo dinners. Get some of that chicken.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
While he did. It's a good call. I like that.
Speaker 11 (31:15):
Actually, yeah, So my question. I'm actually getting married Saturday
to a somewhat Kentucky fan and she doesn't go as
deeperted as what I do. And she couldn't understand why
I was so excited about this Indiana game. She actually
got up and left at halftime just because she wasn't interested.
(31:36):
Are there a few games that I could go back
and show her in the archives to get her more
excited about Kentucky basketball and just Kentucky as a whole.
Speaker 5 (31:44):
Oh yeah, I mean you don't even have to go
back that far.
Speaker 6 (31:47):
Go to the Duke game last year, the Florida game
last year, or you know, you can go back in time.
I mean, there's almost no season where we didn't have
at least one good game except for but I would
say the Duke game in the Florida game last year
are good examples of how or the Gonzaga come back
on the road last year are all good. And even
(32:08):
the second half of the Indiana game, right, I mean that,
But you did, if she doesn't watch a lot of Kentucky,
you did give her the worst half of basketball because
because the first half was a brutal half to watch.
Speaker 7 (32:19):
Yeah, the second half is actually a great example. And
you mentioned this on post game, but that crowd is
about as good as Kentucky gets too.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
And I guess what was that like?
Speaker 7 (32:28):
It's you know, sometimes Rubb, just when Rubb is at
its best. There's nothing like it. And it happens a
couple of times a year, these marquee games. We knew
this would be one of them, and they didn't let
us down. I mean, they there's the first half, they weren't.
They weren't happy there for a little bit. You know,
there wasn't anything like Nashville, and as you know, there
was kind of a boozed up crowd, but there was some.
(32:48):
But then when Kentucky went on that second half run,
we saw the best of.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
Good before the whole.
Speaker 7 (32:55):
Yeah, there was just an energy everywhere, like even I
noticed like people trying to get into rupp Arena like
four thirty.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
Like the game the volleyball happening two I think helped
a lot. We'll talk more about the volleyball in a
little bit. Kentucky families are struggling access what should be
basic essentials like housing and childcare. Those aren't luxuries, they're essentials,
and the Kentucky Chambers focused on improving access to housing
and childcare for all ages and stages of life. They've
been here doing this for over a year, and now
they're asking us to help. Opportunity starts here dot com.
(33:24):
Just go put your name on it, Opportunities starts here
dot com. If you want to tell the legislature, hey
focus on housing and childcare. Opportunity starts here dot com.
I really think it's good that they're doing that so
if you get a chance, go add your name. We'll
take a break. Be right back to Kentucky Sports Radio.
Welcome back, Tukey Sports Radio. Sad news Shenning today about
(33:45):
the Rob Reiner and his wife.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
Yeah, I saw that murdered in their in their home
and their son I think has just been arrested. Oh wow.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
Yeah, that is sad.
Speaker 5 (33:56):
That is sad. You know he was, Uh director was
in All in the Family, which Ryan is one of
his favorite shows. I think so.
Speaker 6 (34:08):
Uh, that's very very sad in their home. An awful story.
I mean, well, I'm sure we'll learn more about it,
uh coming up over the next few days. One person rights, Matt.
I'm glad Lamar Wilkerson did not play well against us.
That would have been too much for this fan base.
I agree he started playing well at the beginning. I
(34:28):
was like, oh no, but then the foul trouble really
got him. Foul trouble shook him up. But it was
obvious early he had the greenest green light. He took
one from deep quick trigger when he'd get the ball
that he looked like a guy that was trying to
show Kentucky up in that game. It just didn't get
the chance. I know we haven't looked good, but like,
I mean, they had a guy with like a mullet.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
Oh that was my favorite guy of the mustache play,
a guy straight.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Out of the eighties.
Speaker 5 (34:54):
Who are these guys?
Speaker 6 (34:56):
Like like they you talk about a team that looked
like where did you get these?
Speaker 5 (34:59):
Dude?
Speaker 6 (34:59):
You know, like Debrees is pretty good, but even he's
he doesn't look like a basketball.
Speaker 5 (35:05):
It looked like if I have a little baby fat
on him.
Speaker 6 (35:07):
Yeah, I mean he's the coach's son, and he was
well when Wilkeson was out, he was their best player.
Speaker 5 (35:12):
But he's good, But it does look like like they
just kind of look like they just hey, you will.
Speaker 7 (35:17):
It helped they shot like sixteen percent from three. I
know a lot of that was the defense, but they
if you just look at the two.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
Teams, you would think we were a lot better than them,
just on an eye test basis.
Speaker 7 (35:28):
And I want to be careful not to downplay the
win because I'm very excited they won, but part of
me was like, is Indiana, Yeah, they because there was
times their offense, especially so I was Kentucky's defense, but
sometimes their offense.
Speaker 6 (35:38):
Anyway that would have made a loss even worse. Oh,
definitely if we had lost to.
Speaker 5 (35:42):
That that group.
Speaker 6 (35:43):
Yeah, if I'm nine, twenty two eighty seven, Mike, go ahead.
Speaker 5 (35:47):
Mike, alright.
Speaker 8 (35:51):
First off, first, Larry, thank you. I hope everything goes well.
But just hear me out on this signal. But I
think is about half right because I think Pope's in
a strange place this year, because I think he's teaching
a lot more defense than he's used to do. And
(36:12):
I really think they'll get better offensively. You know that
clip you posted last night was Spencer Smith. It shows
they haven't been working on offense. I think they'll get
better offensively and I think they'll shoot a little better.
I mean, if they can get it up thirty two
to the top twenty offense, and I think they can
cut potential to be a top defense. Before this is
(36:33):
all said, well, I.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
Mean that's a fair point.
Speaker 6 (36:35):
They have a lot of they have a lot of
room to improve, and I appreciate the call. There's there's
a clip I retweeted a guy named Spencer Smith. He
breaks down the offensive videos and he has this video
of some of one of our plays. But he does
it for a lot of me. He just shows how
like we just run dumb offense. He shows this clip
(36:56):
malchi Moreno is supposed to set a pick, he doesn't
even touch the guy he's picking. He then runs over
and is supposed to cut, but then he cuts the
wrong place, and then Colin Chandler's in the wrong place.
Denzel Aberdeen doesn't move to where he's supposed to, and
he's basically like, no one on the court is where
they're supposed to be, so no wonder it doesn't work.
(37:17):
None of these people are doing what they're supposed to
do except o Way. And when you watch that clip,
you go, well, maybe if they cleaned all that up,
because there were multiple in the play. He shows there
were multiple parts where if somebody does something different, we'd
had a wide open layup and nobody did what they
were supposed to do.
Speaker 7 (37:33):
Yeah, it's been very just like discombobulated all year. That's
why you have guys trying to go one on one
and then throw up a layup over three dudes. It
also's been killing him to the three point shooting lately.
Olway's actually been pretty good at catching shooting, but I
want to say Chandler's like two for fifteen or three
for fifteen the last couple of weeks. Yes, when those
guys aren't hitting the open shots, it just brings everything down.
Speaker 6 (37:54):
Eight five nine two eight zero twenty two eighty seven.
One person writes, Matt, I have some guarantee scoop, as
Charles Barkley would say, I guarantee it.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
All right. I'm ready for this ship.
Speaker 4 (38:07):
I don't trust this person already?
Speaker 5 (38:09):
Why not? Eight five nine three one nine.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
It's gotta be true.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Go ahead? What is it you don't trust? Eight five
nine three one.
Speaker 4 (38:17):
Nine No, No, I trust?
Speaker 6 (38:20):
Or let's first go back? Can I read you the
last three tweets from eight five nine three one how
many cities in the USO have over one hundred thousand people?
Second tweet topic second tweet today was for Dug the
Blue Coat.
Speaker 5 (38:38):
Okay, I like Doug.
Speaker 6 (38:39):
Third tweet strauss is an ad on all Major League
Baseball helmets. So you can see this person's provided good information. Yeah,
all right, wide range, Hey right, Jaane Quaints will play
against Saint John's ten to twelve minutes. I guarantee it
all right.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
I'm writing it down ten to twelve minute. That's not true.
We never trust this person ever again. You delete their number,
you block them.
Speaker 6 (39:07):
All right, So you're writing down ten to twelve minutes
for Jayden Quainton's Saturday against Saint John's, or you get eight, five, nine, three, one,
nine is done, done.
Speaker 5 (39:15):
With the show.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
You don't ever get to communicate with us again.
Speaker 5 (39:19):
You don't even get the community. Now, don't get back
like you know us? All right? How much you holding
him to the ten to twelve minutes, I mean, if.
Speaker 6 (39:26):
Its not that's a narrow amount of month time, Shannon,
I think that is so specific that if he plays
between ten and twelve, you've got to give him a
round to plot. Oh yeah, I'll even give him a
minute each direction, okay, nine to thirteen, Nine to thirteen, I.
Speaker 4 (39:45):
Would say, if he even plays at all, I would
give him credit.
Speaker 6 (39:49):
Okay, But there have been other people to say he
was going to play ten to twelve. Is so hyper
specific that I think he deserves credit if it's nine
to thirteen.
Speaker 7 (40:00):
I'm with you, And it sounds like there's been a
conversation of like, all right, we're just gonna get you
out ten to twelve. Don't tell your friends that possibly
don't tell you, but he told them, but he told
us so you're writing.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
It down now, all right? Dan?
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Go ahead, Dan, Yeah, Hey, Matt, let's dance from rocking down.
This team reminds me of the movie If I in
seventy one, the game that Couldn't Shoot straight? But don't
you think you know? What I don't understand is that
you know this team is supposed to have some good shooters.
(40:38):
Is that the defensive schemes, offensive.
Speaker 5 (40:41):
Schemes, or who knows?
Speaker 2 (40:43):
Lack of confidence.
Speaker 6 (40:44):
I think it's probably a little bit of all of them,
but who knows. But I think I'm gonna we can't
keep playing a way to think, well, eventually they're gonna
go in. If they do, that's fine, but right now
they're not. And so I think in that second half,
and I appreciate the call. Pope was like, all right,
we have to win this game. What can I do
(41:07):
to make us win this game tonight? Forget about everything else?
And they did, And I think that's just gonna be
half how we have to do for the rest of
the year. You know, we got to stop playing ten
guys eleven guys a lot of minutes like they're not
it's not working. Play the dudes that are playing well
and if it's ugly and if it's not how you
want to play basketball, it doesn't really matter.
Speaker 7 (41:25):
We got to win, and you can tell us they're
hitting them in practice. But you know, three for fifteen
against Indiana, three from whatever is North Carolina. We can't
look up and it's February and you've lost some bad
games and you're still saying, well, they're supposed to be
able to shoot.
Speaker 5 (41:39):
Well, then we'll change it.
Speaker 6 (41:42):
But right now, diabate getting in fights. I do think
Garrison playing well is a big thing because he just
adds something.
Speaker 5 (41:52):
Then it's not just the defenses. He made some flashy
passes he.
Speaker 6 (41:55):
Did and he finishes at the rim, and he's got
some athleticism. You know, Cam Williams block on that three
was awesome.
Speaker 5 (42:03):
Yep. Garrison's dunk might have been the loudest.
Speaker 6 (42:08):
That was a great That should have been an an
one too. I think he got fouled. So that's just
what we do and I think it can work. All right,
We're gonna talk about the volleyball. We hired some football coaches.
We're going young. This is like the youngest staff maybe
in college football. We got twenty six year olds on staff.
We'll take a break, be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio.
