This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Now here's Matt Jones.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Wednesday, December the seventeenth.
I am Matt Jones here in the studio in Lexington, Kentucky.
You can give a Shallnaclocks puppet Shop full line eight
five to nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven.
A Vision Autoglass text machine is seven seven two four
five two five four in the session sponsored by the
Tjsmith Office called TJ He'll make them pay. It has

(00:58):
been uh a disaster for the workforce of Kentucky Sports Radio.
They're just falling like flies. In the last few days.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
What's going on?

Speaker 4 (01:10):
You know? Ryan, he had a wreck, so he's okay,
but he's out. Drew can't move because of his back,
the back per capita injuries for this show with me
and him both, so he's out. We were going to

(01:30):
have a guest, but he got pulled today for reasons
I can't even go into. It's crazy, like they drop
like flies when when it's Annabelle, I guess yeah, So
it's me and you old school, this is the way
it was. And what year did you start with KOSR Shannon?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Twenty eleven, March eleven.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
So year one was me and Zach and then Shannon
came on in twenty eleven. We've talked a lot about
the historic first day where both of us at the
end demanded to not work with the other one. And uh,
but we did a period of time where it's just
me and you, right, just me and you sitting here,
and we tried people out. Do you remember who all

(02:14):
we tried out back then? I tried out, tried it out.
It's not fair. It was just kind of see what
the vibe was like. Let's who were some people back when?
Mark Krubbs, Mark krebs Is when we used.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
A lot paren Johnson parent.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
We used a lot who's now a salesperson for our Heart,
you know that.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yeah, he's right around the corner here.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Mike.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Mike Pratt used to come.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Mike Pratt would come in quite a bit. Those were
probably the three major ones, but we had a lot
more come in wukash or Zoot. Yeah, my friend Jottie
Bruce came in a couple of days. We had a
lot of random people romans, that's right. And then one
day Ryan came in and you know, you see that intellect.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Rus was history. After all.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
I can't let it go when you have that intellect, Shannon,
you can't let that go.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
That's right. That's true talent right there.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
That's true talent. You can't say. So then we were like, okay,
that's it. But there was a lot of period that
was me and you, and so today is almost an
old school Matt and Shannon day kind of like back then.
I used to be able to look through a window
and see you. Yeah, now I can't do that anymore,
but I'm looking through this camera screen and seeing you.
Mario's roaming around behind. We didn't have a Mario. Back then,

(03:23):
we did have Maria answering the phoka. Yea, my Maria
who now is one of the executives at on three Sports,
which is really an amazing thing for people. She came
up to me at an Alabama Vanderbilt game basketball. She
was a former UK student working in the media department
at Vandy, and she said, I'm going to be moving

(03:44):
back to Louisville. There's anything I can do, let me
And it was the perfect timing because I was like, well,
we need somebody to answer the phones. You want to
come answer the phones? And now she is like one
of the higher ups at on three Sports. Isn't that crazy?

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Great story?

Speaker 5 (04:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:00):
It is.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
I would love to have somebody in her answer in
the phones for me right now because I have to
do it all by myself now. But yeah, that is
a great story that you know, just from a conversation
comes into came to me.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
She seemed very nice, she was helping me. I was
working for CBS Sports and I was doing the Alabama
Van d basketball game, and she worked in the Vandy
sports relations department starting now many years later. So I mean,
it's a very cool. You never know what's gonna happen, Shannon,
the dude, that's right, And.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
I think just for old time's sake, that you should
pull up your Facebook and give some shout outs for
birthdays because we used.

Speaker 6 (04:33):
To do this.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
That was the worst gimmick in radio history, and for
some reason we thought was day because nobody knew who
you were talking about except for the person, and they
probably won't even listening to the show to begin with.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
It was just a racking person.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Sure, but I would just go through my Facebook and
if it was somebody's birthday, I would say, this is
somebody's birthday.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Right, Yeah, but no, but nobody cares.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
I understand. Well, let me see whose birthday it is today?
All right, Fine, you've already ruined the gimmick.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Can you even still do that on face?

Speaker 4 (05:08):
I don't know if you can. Eight. I'm nine two
eight oh twenty two eighty seven. So we're gonna make
this and ask anything Wednesday because it's just the two
of us. If you have a question for me or
Shannon about any topic, I'm without Drew and Ryan here
to hold me down. I'm gonna I will answer. Eight.
F I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven
ask anything Wednesday. We'll go through the day. There are

(05:29):
things to get to but it's it's kind of a
slow day, so I'd love this is a perfect time
to get in. Trivia is tonight? I've uh. Yesterday I
went for a walk. I walked by Bear and the
Butcher in Lexington. Have you ever been to that bar
down on off Ukland? I walked there they I walked in, uh,
and they were having trivia, and so I got to

(05:50):
listen to another person's trivia. It was fine, but like.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
You weren't stealing their questions?

Speaker 4 (05:58):
No, I mean because they ask one question, take five minutes.
One question, take five minutes. It's a much harder process
at the Matt Jones Trivia. But we are doing it tonight,
so come on. It'll be the last one of the
year and you can qualify for the finals. But eight
nine two eight twenty two eighty seven, I'm finishing the
questions today. If we're going to start with a UK
sports thing, I think we have to start with the

(06:22):
article today in the Herald Leader about Mitch Barnhart. He
did an interview with the Harold Leader. It's it's a
long one and I don't know if it's if it's
behind the paywall or not. I'm not sure, Shannon, I
have the paywall here? Can I read you real quick?
The top stories on the Herald Leader.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Let's hear it because I don't have a subscription.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Here are the top stories. I'm looking at the top
four stories on the hair Leader. Besides the Mitch Barnhart interview.
Story one, it's here we designed our new app. That's
the top story, sees it. Story two the reason a
public store brand dessert got recalled in Florida. That's the
number two story on the Herald Leader.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
I thought we were supposed to be doing local topics.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
We're talking number three, what is Trevor Lawrence's net worth
as the Jaguars quarterback?

Speaker 2 (07:14):
And why do I care?

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Great question? And then number four Kentucky's rally and Nebraska's
breakthrough national college hoops takeaways.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
I'd love that.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
That's your local newspaper. Here we go.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
That's what I'm missing by not subscribing.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
And then the next one is father charged with murder
at Kentucky State. Well, that's local and serious. But then
there's Mitch Barnhardt's interview. So it's a lot of words Mitch.
Brevity is not one of his strong parts. I think
we could say Shannon, he likes. He likes to say
a lot of words here. I read it all I

(07:49):
would suggest, like, first of all, he did their interview
with Harro. I have asked him to come on this
show that we have gotten no answer. We haven't gotten declined,
but we have haven't gotten approved. I also have asked
him to even talk potentially off the record. Haven't heard anything.
So I've done all that I can. Haven't heard anything.

(08:10):
He decides to do it with the Herald Leader just
as a PR strategy. Shannon just simply a PR strategy.
To me, this is an example of how behind they are.
I don't say this to be rude, but I know
how many subscribers the Harold Leader has now. I think
it's sad that they don't have as many subscribers as

(08:30):
they should, because we need in Kentucky a newspaper forget
about sports, just for news. You need somebody Shannon covering
the news of the state. And the Hair Leader in
the Career Journal did that for a century, and the
newspaper business it's tough. So I subscribe. I'll subscribe till
they close the doors. With that said, if you're trying

(08:50):
to get your message out, Shannon, wouldn't it make sense
to go to the people that have the loudest microphone.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
H Absolutely and definitely not high behind a pea wall.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Yes, I mean the hair Leader is just it's very
nature going to be the place that gets significantly few reviews.
With that said, that's who he talked to. I read
all the interview. Mitch's does not speak directly. It is
lots of words, often very little meaning. For me, there

(09:19):
were two main questions I wanted to read out of
that interview, and I didn't really get the answer to
either one of them. Question one was basically, and the
most important, does the deal with JMI make it to
where we can still get basketball recruits right yesterday? And
this timing is probably unfortunate. Christian Collins, So Kentucky, for

(09:41):
if you're not following basketball recruiting, Kentucky has two guys
that are amongst the best players in the country that
it has been assumed for months we were going to
get to top ten players that at various points people
have just assumed we're going to Kentucky, Tyrone Stokes and
Christian Collins again, if you haven't followed it. Duke has
their guys, they've all signed. Carolina has their guys, they've signed,

(10:05):
Kansas has their guys, they've signed. Everyone has signed except
our guys. But the assumption has been we were going
to get these two dudes. Christian Collins was the one
that was seen to be a lock like done deal.
People had already put out the gifts saying he's a cat.
Yesterday the recruiting insiders all pulled their gifts from Christian

(10:28):
Collins and basically said it's back open. Not good, right right?

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yeah. It makes you wonder what some of.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
The recruiting insiders have basically said. He can't get a
deal done with Kentucky. Now I don't know, because I'm
not part of that process, but the recruiting people who
that's what they do, they say so to me, that
interview becomes even more important. I still would admit to
you I don't totally understand UK's deal with JMI. I mean,

(10:59):
I understand their deal, I don't understand how it pertains
to the nilpiece. They've done away with the private collectives
at UK. Most schools still have one. We do not
We've done away with it. It's all in house, and
Jami has this deal and Mitch tries to explain it
in the article. I think Shannon, he uses so many

(11:21):
words that I don't know what they mean. You know
what I mean? When you just we just keep talking
and so you don't understand.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Yep, yep, that's kind of.

Speaker 4 (11:29):
How we talk.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
Sometimes you just need it to be explained to you
as if you were a fifth grader, like exactly.

Speaker 4 (11:35):
And I could explain about sixty percent of the deal
to everyone as a fifth grader, but I think it
would be kind of boring. Maybe we'll do a podcast
on it one time. Here is the question that matters
the most. This is what matters the most as you're
following this, there is one question that matters. In the
article on Kentucky Sports Radio dot Com, agents are quoted

(11:58):
as saying JMI is asking us to sign papers that
these other schools are not restricting our ability to sign
in AILE deals with non UK affiliated partners, and basically
we're not doing that. Now that's the agent side, Channon,

(12:18):
that's not UK side. So the next question is okay, UK?
Is that true? Yes or no? And he doesn't.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Answer is nobody. So that wasn't even asked.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
It's not asked, but he doesn't ask it directly. He says,
are players prevented from signing with other UH non affiliated businesses?
And Mitch says, no, that's not true. But that's not
the question that is obvious. The question is when we

(12:52):
recruit a player and we say we you will get
this much money at UK because every school's doing that,
Shannon right, They're going you'll get two million, you'll get
two and a half, you'll get one whatever. When we
have that conversation, are we forcing them to sign a
document to get that money that no one else is

(13:13):
The question is not once you're here, can you go
get other stuff? I think everybody agrees the answer to
that is yes. The question is when we are guaranteeing
you the money to play here, and let's all be honest,
that is what's happening. Are you free when you take

(13:35):
that money to also go to do other things? UK
will take a kid and let them do whatever they want,
But the question is, with the guaranteed money, are you
free to do what you want? Does that make sense? Yeah? Yeah,
And that question is not answered in that article and
it's not asked directly. It's asked whether or not they

(13:55):
can do other things, but it's not asked can they
do other things after that they've taken your money.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Clearly there has got to be something in there, because
other schools, all these other blue bloods already have players
already here, and we're the only one that still.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
And we don't And I don't know the answer to
that question, and they've not answer answered it. And then
the second question that's not answered is are you coming back?
Are you resigning? And I'm gonna read you after the
break his answer on that one, because that's an amazing
that's a yes or no? Are you going to be
the ad next year? What would you say? Yes?

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Yes or no?

Speaker 4 (14:33):
Wait till I read you his answer, and tell me
when it's over if you decipher a yes or a no.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
Okay, all right, all right?

Speaker 4 (14:41):
Yeah, So all I can say is I've told you
what I know about it. I've parsed that article as
best as I could. This morning. I couldn't really get
an answer to either of those questions. I've asked him
to come on here. They have not responded. I have
to assume that means they're not going to at least now.
But we've tried, and it is what it is. Eight

(15:03):
if I'm nine, twenty two eighty seven, it's an ask
anything Wednesday. We will take your questions. We will give
you the answers, at least the best we know him.
Next here on CHAOSO. Yeah, I can't find the birthdays anymore.
They stopped doing that. I guess he was the only
way I knew when people had birth No wait, sorry,

(15:24):
found them all right? Pick a number one through eight
seven seven. Happy birthday, Tom Vernisi?

Speaker 2 (15:34):
Do you even know who that is?

Speaker 4 (15:35):
Tom Vernisi went to Atherton High School, He was born
in nineteen seventy six, and he is my friend on Facebook.
I do not know him, but there's a picture of
him today working on his car. Happy birthday to Tom.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Hope your car starts.

Speaker 7 (15:53):
See.

Speaker 4 (15:53):
I don't know why you thought that was a bad segment.
That's a really good segment.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
Do you accept people you don't know on Facebook?

Speaker 4 (15:58):
As for me, I used to accept a lot of
people out so I would say the fat like most
of my friends on Facebook are people I accepted over
a decade ago. But then they have a rule you
can't have more than five thousand. So now if I
accept you, I either know you or there's something about
your profile where I'm like, gotta have this personal I

(16:19):
delete people sometimes sometimes I say you or your I
don't know you. We're gonna have and if you write
me one mean thing, you're out. Yeah. I have a
no tolerance policy on the friends because you only get
five thousand.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Up right, And I feel like on Facebook is probably
where I know the most people personally and actually tell
them yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
More so than Twitter or anything else.

Speaker 4 (16:37):
Ef I'm nine two eight twenty two eighty seven, what
person says, I'll tell you one person whose birthday it is.
It's my wife's grandmother, Myrtle Kimmel. She turns ninety two.
They don't name kids Myrtle anymore.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
No Myrtle.

Speaker 4 (16:49):
They know. I don't know when Myrtle went around, and
if I had a great aunt, I had a great
aunt named Myrtle. I think there used to be a
time there were a lot of.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Myrtles, Myrtle, Gertrude, Gertrude.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
It's another way, Bertha, Well, Bertha, you know there kidding
Bertha anymore.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
I'm just saying, but Myrtle.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
Is definitely like that one got lost somewhere and they don't.
All right, I'm gonna read you Mitch Barnhart's answer before
we go to the phones. Here's the question. There's been
a lot of speculation about your own future. Have you
made a decision on that? Are you ready see if
you can follow this show? Okay, let's go two things.
I love competing. You know that. You know I love
this place with all my heart. We came here in

(17:27):
two thousand and two and planned on staying six to
eight years and stayed a lot longer. I know there's
people to get frustrated because I've been here a long time,
and that's okay. I since that an old boss of
man told old boss of mine told me one time,
every time you make a fifty to fifty decision, use
fifty percent of your friends. He's probably not wrong. But
we love Kentucky. I get up invigorated about what we're
doing at work. I'm still not even halfway through. I

(17:48):
love watching our kids compete. When that day comes and
I don't know, I'll sit down with my family and
we'll talk and determine what's best for our family and
for me, but more importantly, what's best for Kentucky. I
got a couple two and a half more years left
on my count. The ambassador clause is out there. It
can go any time after December thirty first. If that's
something that's best for this university, then we'll have that conversation.
If it's something that we want to continue to work at.

(18:10):
I would like to win some more things. I like
winning volleyball has been a blast. I'd like to win
it some more things and see what we got. And
I love our coaches. We've got good people and it's
fun to work with.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
So in other words, maybe that's not even a maybe
that's like.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
That's nothing.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
Yeah, it's a lot of words.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
It's a lot of words.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
To get no answer out of it.

Speaker 4 (18:33):
Are you coming back?

Speaker 3 (18:35):
He likes to compete fifty to fifty volleyball?

Speaker 4 (18:40):
Yeah, I mean to me, those answers like they do
more harm than good. I know less. I know less
now than I did before. Right, Well, you know.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
Yeah, he says, get what two two and a half
years left on the contract, But then again, he can
step away after December thirty first, right, But.

Speaker 4 (18:59):
He doesn't get any sense if that's what he's gonna do, Right,
he said, we'll have conversations.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
Yeah, okay, he's great at not answering the cluss.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
I mean that's great. Do you know why we don't
know what's going on? Yeah, answers like that. Let's go
to Justic go ahead, justin.

Speaker 8 (19:16):
Hey, wells, appreciate you taking my call. I'm actually headed
to the airport to go to Kansas City to watch
the volleyball team play.

Speaker 4 (19:24):
It's excited, now, that's I mean, that's I'm excited about
the volleyball tomorrow night, nine o'clock. We're gonna have a
watch party. I think it's gonna be fun. But I'm
also just excited to watch him. They are the favorites
right now, they're the betting favorite. And are you going?
Do you go to a lot of volleyball games.

Speaker 8 (19:42):
I'm actually an alum. I actually used to be a
student manager for Craig Okay, I graduated in twenty eighteen,
so just to support And yeah, I'm I'm just really
excited to have the chance to watch him compete for
their second title. And I guess I really didn't have
a question planned. But since I am going, you and
Shannon are the only one on duty today, do you

(20:02):
guys want like a hat or a T shirt from City.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
Radio.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
We never turned down free swag.

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Send send volleyball swag the CHS bar and if you
get it there quickly, if you k gets it over
there tonight, we'll give it away at the watch party tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (20:19):
Okay, perfect.

Speaker 4 (20:20):
What sizes do you guys wear? I'm an excel Shannon's
extra small, large, war a large. Thank you very much,
appreciate it. No, that's uh, it's gonna be exciting tomorrow night.
You think we're gonna win?

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yes, yes I do.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
I do have a little bit of PTSDC in Wisconsin
in the final four. But you know that was that
was basketball has nothing to do with this.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
Well, do you think this would erase it at all
if we were to beat them? And? Uh, it make
me feel a.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Little bit better about it, just a little bit. You
still got Pittsburgh on the other side of the bracket.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
Who's the would you do you think you can dance
in between the sets at the final four? Well, you
talked about how they were dancing at the Elite eight.
Can you dance at the final four?

Speaker 3 (21:02):
Why would you stop? Now you know you dance in
the Elite eight? Why are you gonna stop when you
get to the final four.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
I had somebody write me and go. The hard thing
for me about volleyball is I never know if we've
won or lost the point because our players celebrate the
same either way.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
That's right, they really do.

Speaker 4 (21:18):
They really do. Both teams clap no matter whether they
score or not.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
It's really the happiest sport I've ever watched.

Speaker 4 (21:26):
I mean it is. Oh, it's definitely the happiest sport.
It's the It's the most life affirming sport that exists,
like you.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Know what, not even happier than that, Like volleyball.

Speaker 4 (21:38):
It feels like there's a darkness under it.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Well you've watched what was it cheer on on Netflix?

Speaker 4 (21:43):
Yeah, but it feels like they're like they're smiling, but
we don't know what's insane. It feels like volleyball is
pure joy everywhere for every point. You're great, No, Mario,
you're great. Everyone is great.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
The cheerleaders are smiling, but they're dead inside.

Speaker 6 (22:00):
Go ahead, Joey, Hi, guys, first time caller, who uh yep,
I'm mad. I don't want you to know. We're thinking
about your family up this way, man, Thank you, but
you kind of answered my question earlier in the show.
I was calling about the recruiting. You know, I'm kind
of worried about that. Is there any way you could
get a coach or coaching some of the staff on

(22:22):
to explain, well, it's time they.

Speaker 4 (22:25):
Can't talk about they can't talk about individual players. I mean,
I think once the roster is built at the end
of the year, then I am going to say to
Mark Pope in an interview, how's this working. And because
here's the thing, you could argue we shouldn't recruit these
elite freshmen anymore. I'll listen to the argument. But the

(22:49):
thing is he has recruited them. He's recruited like six
or seven and tried, and if we get none of them,
then that's an issue. A five nine two eight oh
two for eighty seven open lines will be right back. TJ. Smith,

Speaker 2 (23:05):
He'll make them pay now.

More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
Here's Matt Jones, Welcome.

Speaker 4 (23:12):
Back, Take you Sports Radio. Some questions from the text
machine seven seven two seven seven four five two five
four one person rights. No one knows the JMI deal.
Let me ask you a question, what was the reason
and the best of to the best of your ability,
for why UK signed it. I think that's fairly easy.
JMI provided a backstop in terms of financial support, and

(23:32):
it was probably one that UK believes they needed. From
what I've seen of the JMI deal, and granted, I
give myself the ability to modify this when I learn
more about it. I think it's a really good deal
for ninety five to ninety seven percent of the student
athletes at UK. It provides an athlete that doesn't have
a lot of market value him or as him or

(23:52):
herself a chance to make some money. So I think
it's a really good deal for women's basketball, baseball, volleyball,
and most of football, probably almost all of football. I
think the JM idea works for those people. The question
is does it work for elite basketball recruits, the elite

(24:15):
basketball recruits who themselves have market value? Does it work
for them? And right now the answer for me seems
to be no, and that's why they're not getting these guys.
So the question is going to be will it be
modified for the elite guys? And we'll have to see,
and maybe it already is. But nobody's answered the question,

(24:36):
so I don't know. One person writes, Matt, you talk
a lot about your fellowship. It sounds cool. How did
you get chosen, Shannon? They just called me one day
they read an article you may remember. You remember there
was an article about me in Politico in like two
thousand and nineteen, about me potentially running for Senate, and
a guy came down here. He made fun of my haircut.

(24:59):
You remember that. He was like, he has a crooked
haircut and he's got a stain on his hoodie.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
And the guy who's gonna be running for office.

Speaker 4 (25:07):
I was like, man, I bought you wings, give me ah,
why are you doing that to me? But they read
that article and ended up it was a lot about
how like they were. They talked to all these people
who were Trump voters, who but who liked me, and
so the whole felt it's this woman called me up
and was like, you sound like what we're looking for.
And that's how I ended up in And it's been
a great experience, well, the best experiences of my life.

(25:28):
I've absolutely, uh, absolutely loved it. One person writes, you
and Shannon, Shannon was big on the Epstein files. Yeah, yeah, Matt,
wouldn't the FBI have already arrested people if there was
information into arrest them. That's always been my view. I
always have thought the Epstein thing. While it's so odd

(25:50):
to me that they won't release the files, I also think,
like I always think it's been overblown, but it's but
the it's like the dog that catches the what's the
dog that catches the car? Like you catch the car,
doesn't know what are you going to do?

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Is know what to do with it once it catches.

Speaker 4 (26:07):
So like all these people were rambling about the Biden
administrations hide in the Epstein files, then they got them,
and then they haven't done anything either. They caught the car,
and like you could say, well it's such a huge
conspiracy they don't want to release it, or you could say,
like I do that. Like there's not as much juicy
stuff as people said there was.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
There's no list according to the latest that we're hearing,
there's no list at all.

Speaker 4 (26:29):
But see the woman that's the Attorney General, Pam Bondi,
she said there was a list. So now they're saying
there's not, Well, then how do you explain that six
months ago you said there.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Was I don't even know what to believe anymore.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
That's the problem, and then nobody will believe anything. That's
what I've always told you about conspiracy theories why I
don't like them. You create so much confusion that nobody
believes anything, and that's actually not good for society in
my opinion. Shannon, did you see the video of the

(27:01):
guy who's a dart player in England and loses and
beats up his table?

Speaker 2 (27:07):
No, No, you need to look this up.

Speaker 4 (27:10):
Look, there's a guy he's playing darts in England, one
of those dart matches like I went to where everybody screams, and.

Speaker 2 (27:15):
He's like like all that, I'm watching it right now.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
And he loses and he just takes his fist and
he starts beating the I mean beating the table. Yeah,
and then he comes out and his hand is like
bloody and it's like blood going down his hand and
they escort him off the stage. They're like, please stop
beating up our table.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
I didn't know darts could be so violent, but this guy, yeah,
he's just wearing it.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
Out and not like kind of punching it.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
Yeah, and he's what did he think was gonna happen.

Speaker 4 (27:51):
I think you want to make sure that table didn't
fight back.

Speaker 2 (27:53):
The table didn't do anything, It was just sitting there.

Speaker 4 (27:56):
That's he's a violent reaction. I mean, have you seen
the picture of his hand after it?

Speaker 2 (28:02):
Yes, it's like all bloody.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
It's disgusting.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
We need to see if he was on like some
sort of performance enhancement drugs or something with that kind
of rage he's.

Speaker 4 (28:10):
Got going on the drugs for darts.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
Well, maybe just something you know, to keep your hands
steady so it doesn't shake you.

Speaker 4 (28:18):
I don't think I could do it, because when I
hold my hand up like that sometimes.

Speaker 2 (28:21):
You shake a little bit.

Speaker 4 (28:22):
You shake a bit. He doesn't.

Speaker 3 (28:24):
If you take some sort of thing like is there
something you can take to calm your heart rate down?
You know, slow it down to your nice and calm.
I feel like that would be something you could.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
Take performance enhancing darts.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
That is the angriest person to ever play darts right there.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
I've never seen anyone get that bad about darts ever. Kurt,
go ahead, Kurt.

Speaker 9 (28:47):
Hi Matt, second time, really long time from well, thank you.
I have a question that you may have already talked
about on your Gamling podcast. Which I didn't unfortunately listen to.
What did What are your honest thoughts on the Raiders
kick against the Broncos two weeks ago when they kicked
the field goal to cover the spread?

Speaker 4 (29:09):
So is that the game? They were down ten and
they kicked a field goal and it made it three
or excuse me, it was they made it seven, but
the spread was seven and a half. Is that right?

Speaker 9 (29:19):
Yes, sir?

Speaker 4 (29:20):
Was there any time left on the clock.

Speaker 9 (29:23):
There was five seconds left on the clock and Pete
Carroll's coach forever, and you know he knew there would
be no chance.

Speaker 4 (29:30):
Here's the Here's here's the argument. I mean, the argument
is you quickly do an onside kick. If you get it,
you can throw a hail mary? Was there? Whereas if
you throw the hail Mary, it'll take up all the
time and then you have no chance. I mean, I
it's suspect.

Speaker 9 (29:47):
It was fifty yards, Matt, and you know that takes
five seconds from fifty yards.

Speaker 4 (29:52):
Oh, so did the game end on the field goal?

Speaker 9 (29:55):
It did?

Speaker 4 (29:57):
Okay? Yeah, then that's weird.

Speaker 2 (29:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (30:01):
Is there any argument channing to say, what's better to
lose by seven than ten?

Speaker 3 (30:05):
I guess yeah, you know, at least we lost by
single digits, not double.

Speaker 4 (30:09):
It is suspect. I'll agree with you. I appreciate the call.
It is suspect.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
But I think, you know, there's probably a thought that
maybe you have a second left on the clock, and
what you were saying, maybe you get an onside kick
and maybe something crazy happens. I mean, that's really the
only chance you're gonna have to win if you kick
the field goal and try to go for the on
side kick.

Speaker 4 (30:27):
Otherwise maybe you're just like seven seven looks better than ten.

Speaker 3 (30:31):
Well maybe otherwise I feel like you're just giving up
on the game if you try to help Mary with
five seconds to go, if you have a chance to
kick a field goal.

Speaker 2 (30:37):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
Yeah, I mean, by your logic, I guess I would say, sir,
why don't you just kneel down? Yeah, if you're gonna
go for something, why not go for points that are
actually realistic?

Speaker 6 (30:47):
Right?

Speaker 4 (30:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (30:48):
Or maybe there was money on the game, yeah, or.

Speaker 4 (30:51):
Maybe Pete Carroll's on the game. I think that's less likely.
But no, no, Bob and James down, go ahead? Bob
had what about.

Speaker 7 (31:02):
These stickle fans? I was out in Kansas City pickle fans.

Speaker 4 (31:07):
What's a pickle fan?

Speaker 7 (31:08):
Listen to sports radio and I couldn't believe how they
were running down the Chiefs. I mean it's just you
know they were and that was before Moans and they're
getting beat twice by Texas and the Cowboys.

Speaker 4 (31:23):
Well, I mean we're the same way though. I mean
when we're good one year, I mean last year we
made the Sweet sixteen, and now this year we're upset.
I think that's just the nature of fans. You want
to be good in the year that you're in, and
so like, even if you won every championship the year
before the year that you're in, you're gonna be like,
we want to win this year too.

Speaker 7 (31:43):
A real fan supports a team regardless. I've been a
Bengals fan for years, and you know their record. They've
been to the super Bowl twice. But a real fan
is a fan. They don't tickle.

Speaker 4 (31:58):
Now, I don't know if you're a real fan. Been
the Super Bowl three times? Kenny Anderson made it boomera
size and made it, and Joe Burrow made it.

Speaker 5 (32:09):
Yeah that's right, I forgot it.

Speaker 4 (32:11):
Yeah, I appreciate the call. You're not a real fan,
not a real Fanha, you don't even know. Yeah, I mean,
that's the only thing you can know, is a bingle
fan is how many times you've been in the super Bowl.
There's nothing else to know. Yeah, you never won.

Speaker 2 (32:27):
Happens maybe twice a lifetime, three times a lifetime. It
depends on how old you are.

Speaker 4 (32:32):
Tom, go ahead, Tom, Hey, Matt, how you doing good.

Speaker 5 (32:37):
I want to give a little insight as far as
JAMI goes. And this is years and years ago. I
used to work for International Management Group and I was
curious for people who don't.

Speaker 4 (32:48):
Know that was the company that existed I'MG before JMI.
That was Kentucky's rights holder before JMI.

Speaker 5 (32:57):
And they're also basically the kind of the founder of
sports marketing through Mark mccarmick. And of course you represented
Arnold Palmer, Nicholas and Player and I worked. I was
one of the first employees that worked in basically our track
and field division, and we basically took this opinion back
and field pro My opinion is that it's a very close,

(33:18):
almost incestuous relationship. If you look at the president of
JMI and the person who's head of n i L,
they're both former UK employees I see a little bit
in regards to baseball marketing, but not a lot of
Like at IMG, we had so many different divisions within
golf track tends, whatever, and and and and also TV,

(33:41):
there was a big cross fertilization of lead from different companies.
My fear is is that you know, you can only
go back to Central Banks so many times, and that
you have people who've been dealing with the same companies
year and year out without basically any any any exposure
maybe some outside lead. The other thing is it's pretty

(34:02):
clear to me that Mitch was definitely betting that the
Score Act was going to pass, no doubt, no doubt.

Speaker 7 (34:10):
He got rid of our.

Speaker 4 (34:13):
Tom I appreciate man. We got to move quicker. I
he got rid of the private collectives because he assumed
they were going to be illegal and they're not. And
that's maybe that'll end up being accurate, but it's not
accurate right now, and that probably has had an impact. Hey,

We'll take a break. If I'm nine to two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven's KSR, Welcome back Techi Sports Radio.
If I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven,
I'm sorry I had to cut off that dude. I'm Jake.
I'm g I would like to have heard more about
me talking about but you know, it wasn't a hard break.

(35:18):
But we we have to be out of here about
forty six or they lose their mind. If I'm nine
two eight h uh twenty two eighty seven, Apparently there
are performance enhancing drugs for uh, if not darts rifle.
There are beta blockers that make your hands not shake
as much.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
Right, Yeah, I mean I was halfway joking about that,
but I mean it makes sense to keep you steady
from shaking.

Speaker 2 (35:42):
You would need that, and darts.

Speaker 3 (35:43):
I would think interesting, Yeah, well they test them, you think, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:48):
No, I mean I bet I'm sure they do. Yeah.
One person writes, Matt you and Shannon Shannon are wrong
about the Epstein files this cut. This involves the entire
world world. I mean that may be true.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
This person doesn't exactly. I mean, nobody knows, except for
the problem.

Speaker 4 (36:08):
Is we'll never know. The problem is we're never gonna know,
and so people, I understand, people will believe what they
want to believe. I don't know. Maybe it does involve
the whole world. I don't I don't know.

Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yeah, I don't think any of this is ever coming out.

Speaker 4 (36:22):
We'll never really, And they're supposed to. I think it's
isn't it this week? They're supposed to release it.

Speaker 2 (36:26):
I've been hearing that for a year.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
They're supposed to it, and then they re.

Speaker 2 (36:31):
Then just something else happens and they forget about it.

Speaker 4 (36:34):
And then they never do. One person writes, this song
is question is only for Shannon, thanks a lot. What
is the best cover of a song of all time?

Speaker 9 (36:42):
Hmmm?

Speaker 3 (36:44):
I have to think about that one for a minute.
I mean, the most success.

Speaker 4 (36:50):
It wasn't for me, it was just.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
For I think it's probably gonna be Whitney Houston.

Speaker 4 (36:56):
That's what I was gonna say, that's coming. Whitney covering
Dolly is the most successful. I will always love you.
It's the most successful. I mean, whether it's the best
is everybody's own opinion, right, but it's the most successful.
That's got to be the most successful.

Speaker 3 (37:11):
Cover of all time, right there with All I Want
for Christmas is You, Mariah Carey. I mean, say, what
do you want about that? But it is the most No.
I hate that song, but I mean it.

Speaker 4 (37:20):
Joys bring it.

Speaker 3 (37:21):
No.

Speaker 4 (37:21):
It's Ryan that always loves it because it's like, yeah,
it was controversial I think at one point and Ryan
was like, but I love it, and he got really
get really free.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
But I think it's like one of the most successful
of all time. It hits number one on the charts
every year at this time. Yeah, and even though I
hate the song, it's still one of the most popular ever.

Speaker 7 (37:39):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (37:40):
I'm nine. Twenty two eighty seven. The Kentucky Indiana basketball
game got the highest TV rating for a back college
basketball game on ESPN this year, and it is Shannon
the highest TV rating for a December basketball game for
ESPN in five years. What that tells me is put

(38:01):
these games on Saturday night prime time and put Vatalan
Barkley on more games.

Speaker 2 (38:06):
Well, I was gonna say that has a lot to
do with it.

Speaker 3 (38:08):
Two million people according to the numbers, watch this game,
and I think Barkley and Vitel together have a lot too.
I don't think it's just Kentucky and Indiana.

Speaker 4 (38:16):
No, it's Kentucky, Indiana and Vatalan bark Right.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
Yeah, so I think we need more games with Votel
and Barkley.

Speaker 4 (38:22):
If you're I mean, if I'm ESPN, do Vitowen Barkley
once a month, right? Yep?

Speaker 3 (38:27):
You don't want it too much because then it's you know,
it's an old, tired act.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
You don't want that too much. But once a month
I think would be good. I would like to see it.

Speaker 4 (38:34):
I think it works. I think you put it. I
actually think I would enjoy it, Shannon, even more on
a game where my team was not playing.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
Oh yeah, yeah, because you don't work.

Speaker 4 (38:42):
Because they just be listening to them.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Yeah, then you go split screen at all you want.
I don't really care, you know, just put it on
them only.

Speaker 4 (38:48):
But I am glad if they're only going to do one.
I'm glad they did ours because I do think that
was a cool night and uh, it'll be something we'll remember.

Speaker 2 (38:56):
Him said it was one of the coolest nights of
his career.

Speaker 4 (38:59):
Yeah, and I'm saying, Shack, you're giving that one hundred
thousand dollars whether you want fat ass or not like
him saying that that's a great that's a great lie. Brandon,
go ahead, Brandon eight five nine two eight twenty two
eighty seven.

Speaker 7 (39:14):
Yeah, good morning.

Speaker 9 (39:15):
You guys opened the show talking about KSR people from
yesteryear and you failed to mention In turn, Drew, Well.

Speaker 4 (39:25):
That's how we had the job for Maria.

Speaker 7 (39:27):
We had.

Speaker 4 (39:27):
That's how we had the job for the Maria's Drew
the Intern moved to Chicago with his woman to work at.

Speaker 2 (39:34):
What was it sports?

Speaker 4 (39:37):
Yeah, Hedge, fine girl for Bacon Sports. And then that's
how we had the opening for Maria.

Speaker 5 (39:43):
That's all I had.

Speaker 4 (39:44):
Appreciate it. Yes, Drew the Intern, don't want to forget him.
He came to our bar about a year ago. He
was he was friends with Zach. So the chronology is
I create the show with Rob Goodell, John Wilkinson, Hubby
on podcasts, The Turkey Hunter, all those guys. It moves

(40:06):
to radio. Well, first it moves to radio, not KSR,
and it's me. It's a sports mob with Matt and Rob.
Then Rob moves to Florida and it becomes Me and
davraa goone at People don't remember that. And then I
had my own show for a little while at night

(40:27):
on a black gospel station in Louisville.

Speaker 2 (40:31):
That's an interesting choice to put you on there.

Speaker 4 (40:33):
Well, it was on thirty eighth in Broadway in Louisville.
I would dry and it was at night. And then
get KSR, bring Zack in, Drew the intern, and then
the kind of the rest is history.

Speaker 3 (40:47):
You know, Zach is still very important to the show
because about once every six or seven years we lose
the lost turn to the podcast, and Zach's still the
only part.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
Did he ever tell us what the password was?

Speaker 4 (40:58):
Zach is still the only person who can log in
any all.

Speaker 3 (41:01):
It won't tell anybody else. It's like a secret that
he holds.

Speaker 4 (41:04):
Sally stays connected to you. He still is the only
person that can log into the podcast.

Speaker 5 (41:09):
Drew, go ahead, Drew, Hey, Matt, So I think it's
pretty clear that nil is an issue. So I guess
my question is what do we do?

Speaker 9 (41:19):
Are we just kind of stuck until this game ideal
goes away?

Speaker 5 (41:22):
Is there anything?

Speaker 4 (41:23):
Well, here's what my optimistic view. If they lose all
these basketball players, and again, now, if they end up
getting Christian Collins and Tying Stokes, I think that means
it worked itself out. But if they don't, then I
think JAMI is going to have to change their deal
or UK's going to have to change their deal so
that they get these elite players. I mean, the deal

(41:45):
goes for fifteen more years, so I don't think that
deal is not going to end. The question will be,
can they if it works for ninety seven percent of
the players and it doesn't work for the other three percent,
why not just make an exception for the other three percent. Now,
you k might say, well, if you make an exception
for three percent, then the other ninety seven percent are

(42:06):
gonna won it, And maybe they're right. I don't know
the answer to that question, so but I'm but I'm
concerned about it. With these top guys, maybe they fix it,
But you had like four dudes in this class locked up,
and right now it's looking like we might not get
any of them. Eight fi Ive'm nine two eight oh
twenty two eighty seven will take your calls back, Ask anything, Wednesday,

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
