NFL Cover Zero: Injury Updates and NFL Week 16 Previews !

Matt Jones and Drew Franklin add Drew to the list of NFL injuries from this week. What is the future of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs?  Matt is now a believer in Bo Nix as a top QB that's capable of winning of Super Bowl.  The Steelers top the Dolphins, but the real story is Tua's future in Miami.  

Joe Burrow will start the remaining 3 games despite the Bengals being eliminated from the playoffs. Saturday NFL games begin this week with Eagles/Commanders and Packers/Bears.   Matt explains what this game means for Chicago. The Broncos are on the verge of clinching their division and possibly the AFC, we review the scenarios.

He has a back injury that has made it to
where he can barely move, and so he called the
nursing home and got them to put him in his
share so he can join us.

Drew, are you all right?

Speaker 1 (00:49):
First of all, you've had to miss a couple of
days of radio and just is everything okay?

Speaker 3 (00:54):
I'm getting by.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
I can tell you it is not fun when that
backspasm locks in. I haven't felt pain like that in forever,
but I'm playing through it. It's just been a bad
week of injuries across the NFL, me included, but I
had to show for the show.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, I mean people who haven't had back pain. You
and I have shared it for a long time. I
mean not like literally shared it, but we both have it.
It's the worst, Like I mean, well, I'm sure there
are things that are worse, but when you get a
certain kind of pain in your back. You can't move,
especially if it's in your lower back, like whatever you
want to do, whether it's you know, walk, just lay down,

(01:33):
throw things at billy like there's nothing you can do,
and it's the worst.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
There was a moment last night. I've been sleeping at night,
I've just been staring at the ceiling. But I just thought,
I wish I just had like a broken arm, because
then it's just one arm. It's over here to the side.
I still got this one. I can walk around, but
I like physically cannot get up and move from one
room to the other. I'm pretty much had to crawl
just to get here. It's taking me down quite a bit.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
So are you did you do anything for it?

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Are you at the age where like literally you can
sneeze and then you're not moving for two weeks.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
We cannot point one specific incident, so I think it's
more of just getting old. They didn't have neither neither
side had much to contribute to what actually caused it.
He just said, it's part of I turned forty last year.
It's just part of getting into my forties.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
When I when I went to the doctor with mine
you know, they did all these scans, and I was
expecting to hear like, oh, there's a swelling of your
A six and urber, he just said, we see no
structural damage. We see inflamed nerves in part because of
a of a what did they say, a spine that

(02:40):
has been reduced by old age.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
And I was like, first of all, I don't like
that diagnosis.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
I don't think you have to be angry when you
like I don't think you have to demean me as
you're giving me that diagnosis old age. And secondly, you know,
I feel like, with the modern stuff of medicine, can
we do something. But I was out for a couple
of weeks, and so now you have been too. Yeah,
having to do with it too. I guess that's put
it the medical way of telling you year old. My

guy just straight up say you're getting old. But I'm
hoping to get through it and be on the other
side tomorrow. As long as I just walk around, I'm
fine doing the rest. It's just a matter of literally
standing up and moving that has been an issue. He
also said to me, I said, can you would help
if I did yoga and backstretching, And he was like,
in your case, maybe just you know, like you may

(03:31):
be so far gone that there's really nothing we could do.
But well, I'm glad you're here, and we do have
a lot of injuries to talk about. I mean, I
guess probably still the biggest story in the NFL, as
Patrick Mahomes going down he had ACL surgery. I think
we've hit a very important point in the history of
the NFL. It used to be when every athlete tore

(03:51):
their ACL, they flew to Birmingham and doctor James Andrews,
who is the only doctor whose name I know outside
of the ones I go to, he would do the surgery.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Now I saw Mahomes went to doubtless and went to
somebody else.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Is doctor James Andrews's now been surpassed and is he
no longer the go to doctor?

Speaker 4 (04:14):
Oh wow, I didn't realize this twist in the In
the Mahomes injury, it does say a little bit about
doctor Andrews been on the hot seat because.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Forever you see a guy go down and you just
know they're taking a straight to doctor Andrews. It's the
only reason anybody ever went to Birmingham.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
And I have wondered for years how did that guy
end up at Birmingham? Has he ever considered moving, Has
he ever thought that there might be a better place
for him? But no, he's been surpassed, kind of like
Mahomes himself not had the greatest year ever, and so
now he's been this guy in Dallas did the surgery.
Apparently it was only in acl A lot of the

other ligaments were okay, So they expected me back at
the start of the year.

On Doctor Andrews, you're reminding me they'd go to Birmingham.
It says a lot about him that he could go
to New York, LA, these big market cities where they'd
be easier to access. No, he's like, I'm good enough, y'all.
Just come on down to Birmingham.

You're gonna have to fly in the Birmingham Regional Airport.

I remember when the w W when I back in
the nineties, the WWF now WWE, they would do segments
with Doctor Andrews and show him doing the surgery on
the wrestlers, and I was like, maybe I don't want
to be stone cold, Maybe I want to be doctor Andrews.

For as a as an adult.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Did you have was that a path you considered the
medical career. You know, you've been took some breaks to
get in law school.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
I don't like blood, so that's I think that's part
of it.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
And then, uh, this is going to sound like a brag,
but it's just a fact. The only B I ever
got in high school, college or law school was in
my first semester of chemistry at Transy, and I got
to be plus. And I've basically revolted against science since
then because I would are it's faulty if it thought

that I deserve to be plus.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
This is like one of your im smarter than Internet moments. Science.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
I was like, chemistry does not recognize my talents. And
basically whether I'd have been a good doctor or not
is up for grabs. But you can think doctor whatever
his name was, that gave me a B plus when
I was a freshman.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Well, we're all glad.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
I'll speak for Billy too, We're all glad it didn't
turn out to your medical career because this is a
lot more fun.

Well do you expect when he comes back that Mahomes
rekindles a second run.

Andy Reid says he's not going anywhere.

There's people who think he wants to stay to pass
Don Shula's win record. Do you think that there is
a second act in the Mahomes store.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
I do think there's a second act, But I think
the Chiefs will look a lot different. You know, I
don't expects Kelsey will be back for years. I think
they've just built that team just considering, oh we have
Pat Mahomes. He can do magic when we get down
Layton games. So it might change up the Chiefs overall
plan and how we can just lean on Superman. But
I still think that, you know, depending how that offense looks,

(07:14):
you're next year on down the road how well it
can be. But I think my Home still has a
lot of lead football in him. It's still like you're
gonna keep calling Pad like he'd have Homes and you're
just gonna keep calling Pat. That's totally fine to me.
I think they will have a transition.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
I mean, I guess in some ways this was a
transition year, but I think they have another one next year.
I think they're gonna have to build, probably through the draft.
A lot of it will depend on what Chris Jones does.
I think if he comes back. You know, that's still
that's a huge part of your cap. I think you
probably have a year where you ease into the next
generation and then you try to kind of restart it.

The thing is, with the NFL this season and how
it's been so open, I don't think you go into
next year thinking any of these teams are like impossible
to catch, you know what I mean? I mean, like,
are you gonna sit at home and go, well, the
Jaguars are the one seed. We could never be as
good as the Jaguars. So I think for all these teams,
their timeline moves fast or based on how open the

NFL has been this year.

Yeah, I mean still see how it plays out with
the super Bowl. But where we are right now, it's
crazy how the league is upside down for what we
thought it'd be, and how teams just took advantage of
the opportunity, like the Jags or Broncos, who we still
are true believers in boone.

Now they won me over last week, Like I'm I'm
gonna have to act like bo Nicks is not my
you know cousin that's always in trouble that you wish
would get a job, Like I'm I'm gonna have to
act like he's a real quarterback. And part of it
is because all these elite quarterbacks, I mean, dr think

about it. If we started the year and I said
to you, okay, who are the best quarterbacks, you would
have said, Mahomes not making the playoffs.

You would have said, look, Josh.

Allen, who will Lamar Jackson, who has it doesn't even
look like the same player. Joe Burrow who seems to
be having an existential philosophical crisis in his life. Jalen hurts, Uh,

this that bow Knicks, you have to now say, moves
into the conversation of a guy who could win a
Super Bowl and he's on a rookie contract, which is

I don't know their preseason ratings. But bow Knicks, Drake May,
I mean, even your guy Caleb Wilson. There's been some
guys that are playing way Wilson. Sorry, I was just

To my quarterback, you don't call Patrick Mahomes Jim.

You do call him pat, but you get his name right,
show Caleb Williams respect.

I even include Caleb Williams in that category even though
he's a number one pick. We have a lot of
point guard quarterbacks that have Why am I thinking basketball
so much? Remember I just said to you, show some
respect on his name. So just answer as from there?

I mean, did it include the Caleb Wilson part. It
included all of it. I just said, show respect on
Caleb Williams name. And then now you respond, okay.

All the quarterbacks at the top of the list right now,
even guys that I thought were past their prime. Dak Prescott,
the way he's been playing, Matt Stafford. I mean, those
are names. We clearly know those are MVPs. But just
the what we thought we'd see this year, just the Mahomes, Alan,
the usuals. Some guys have stepped in and taken that
spot this year very unexpectedly.

Well, I hope he gets healthy. The league is better
with Patrick Mahomes. I still think that Patrick Mahomes. The
NFL needs Patrick Mahomes, but they're not going to have
him very long, at least for the rest of the
year now. Monday Night Football was two nights ago. The
Steelers beat the Dolphins. You know, the Steelers you can

talk about they still now lead the division. I actually
don't think that's as interesting as on the losing team.

After the game has he meets a player on the
other side and they basically have their own podcast. They
talked for a long time. He's laughing, He's like, hey man,
what's up. And I'm just re enacting how I think
the conversation went he was like, yo, I don't know
what he said, but the point is that they looked
very chummy, right, and people were angry, saying, you just

got beat You shouldn't be so happy to the game.

What do you think about that.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
I've mostly seen the reaction to it that's all been
pretty negative. I guess it's a bad look. And I've
even seen other people on podcasts and shows say that
quarterbacks do this, but they'll go hide in the tunnel
when they know it's a bad loss. So yeah, overall,
it's not a good look. Is his teammates have been
upset about it.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
It's it's not as it's coming out in their interviews.

Speaker 4 (12:28):
It seems like it's not the usual let's just trade
jerseys and get out of here. I mean, they were
really paling it up over there, and he's laughing, and
you know, they've been a hot team that still had
maybe playoff potential, very unlikely, but that completely eliminated them.
And he's over there going over the top with being friendly.
That's competitive with the guy he just played against.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah.

See, I didn't know about his teammates because I feel
like I do sometimes take.

Cues from the teammates.

So, I mean, all these guys after games pal around
a little bit, so they kind of know what the
lineing is.

Teammates are mad, that means they kind of don't think

Now he got binged, not necessarily because specifically of that,
but just because they wanted to play someone else quinn
Ewers is going to play, which even though he only
played in college last Year's a name I had forgotten.
I think we mentioned him a few times at the.

Start of the season and I still had already forgotten him.
I don't so much care.

I guess part of it is all these dudes this
year who played like third, fourth, fifth round have been playing,
so maybe they want to see if quinn Ewers can
do it. But if you're TUA and you're getting bitch
for quinn Ewers, isn't there a part where you start
to wonder, like, is the tu a time over in Miami?

Yeah, he got Russell Wilson. He went from first to third.
They even put Zach Wilson at too. They oh, they
took him to third, so they did. They got the
rustle Jack Wilson siding. Again, we actually live in a
world where we were one injury away from Zach Wilson
playing quarterback in the NFL again. But the same thing
that happened to Russell, except two is on a different circumstance.
That was kind of a one year off Russell deal.

I mean, they owe to a lot of money next year,
and I mean, you're gonna pay him that to be
your third string quarterback or however that'll play out. But
they did move him not just one spot back too,
which sent a message.

Well, Russell Wilson.

Those kind of like Tua in the sense that his
teammates didn't seem to like him either. I mean, I wonder,
I don't know, like I felt like Tua always seemed
so likable until a year ago. And I mean, with
all the injuries everybody's been I think.

Rooted for him. I've rooted for him.

I don't even know the guy, and now it just
feels like the whole thing is completely different. If you
lost a game, though, Let's say you played for Pittsburgh
and I played for Miami and I hadn't seen you
in a while, what is okay for us to do
like I can't come up and like, you know, pinch
your tubby clearly, So like, what is it that's okay

for me to do?

I think most of it you do before you even
played the game. I either see in warm ups, we talk.
He might even go to dinner night before after the game.
You got to keep it pretty brief, especially if.

Hey, you should feel it, especially as a quarterback, and
you should be showing that as a leader. But also
you just don't want it to look different than it
really is, and people play it up that you're over

and out. I would meet you for dinner the night before.
I'd treat your hat before z that but good, but
probably yeah after, especially on the losing end, get out
of there and get back to your life.

guys that he just signed a four year, two hundred
and twelve million dollar exempt extension last year and now
he's third string behind Zach Wilson.

That's going to I mean, they're going to take a
huge cap hit, just like Denver did for Russell Wilson.
And I don't think there's really anything I know, how
you bring him back. If you get bench second string
for Zach Wilson, I think you're just you're gonna have
to say that's probably it, which is amazing because again,
there was a time three years ago where he was
mentioned as maybe one of the five best quarterbacks in
the league and now not even going to.

he's been a non factor really except for his first
six or eight games in Miami. It's been a year

Well? Speaking of Miami, they take on Cincinnati this week,
and Cincinnati announced that Joe Burrow is going to start
the final three games of the season despite being eliminated
from the playoffs.

And you know, I don't like that decision.

Normally I would say, play right, that's why you're there,
go ahead and play. But with him and his injuries
and his injury history and his sort of you know,
EMO phase, I feel like he's going in it might
be it might be good for him to like sit
at home, listen to morrisy and maybe take the rest
of this year off. I don't really see the reasoning,

I know he wants to. He has that attitude of
I'm having fun playing football. I'm not just going to
sit here and watch my teammates. I get that you
need to be that way between the ears as a competitor,
but man, if you were to get hurt again in
these last three games, that would just be unforgivable. On
Cincinnati for Lennon play, I completely understand. I want him
to sit out. I can't believe they're honestly.

Coming off one of his worst performances of his career,
right shut out. I mean, they got shut out, and
it wasn't just that they got shut out.

He was bad, like he legitimately was bad him.

It wasn't just the offensive line, it wasn't receivers dropping passes.

He was bad. And I would look at that and say,
especially on the heels of those interviews.

He did last week, this just maybe a guy that
we need to just let sit and bring back because
he's clearly one of the best talents in the league
and it's not happening right now. So I'm surprised they're
playing him. I would not if I were the Bengals.
But you know, as long as he doesn't get hurt,
I guess it'll be fine. But if he gets hurt.

If he gets hurt, it might be a clean sweep
of everyone in Cincinnati. That might happen anyway. But if
he gets hurt, then I think it definitely will.

I completely agree, and you know, you never want to
see a guy get hurt. But I'm be on Pensinito's
watching this because that will just be a horrible look
for the Bengals. Off somewhere happened to him with nothing
left to play for.

Part of me says the technology on roller coasters has

could we not have updated this in one hundred years.

not only to have the Commanders not in the playoffs,

got to watch a lot of Marcus Mariota over the
years with the Titans, are you excited for I mean,
were getting maybe too much Marcus Mariota in prime spots.

win both of these. With Marcus Mario, they will find
a way to lose one of these two.

when they played in Green Bay, and I said it
was one of the biggest games for the Bears in

If you win this game, you have a very good

shot of winning the North. If you lose this game,
you have a legitimate shot of not making the play.

That's why I think they get them, being right there
with that Williams interception that could have that game should
have gone overtime in green Bay, they know they can
beat them, and since that happened, green Bay's defense has
one of the worst injuries any team can have in

I think they get both of them, and the Bears
take forty.

the Giants and the Titans do not need a quarterback,
