member of the Kentucky basketball program and more with him

is the newest member of the Kentucky men's basketball roster.

he's the best transfer they brought, in but he might
fit what they needed as well or better than any
other transfer they've brought, in because they have a guy
that looks like it's going to be destined to come

and to be as talented as he. IS i never

thought they could get somebody that good.

Well it's the thing they've got some great. Versatility it
seems like in the roster he's put, together they, could for,
instance put out a lineup that's got, Say low And
oway And aberdeen and a couple of, bigs or it
could Be low And way And diabate at the three

and a couple of the bigger guys or other combinations beyond.
That but you, know he's got you guys with versatile
skill sets and that seems to certainly obviously be a
good fit for his, system but also they're more certainly
more athletic and more physical than they were last.

bench that'll certainly give them a different defensive presence in
the back court coming off the bench than what they
had last year because the injuries that they went. Through

of THE NFL nba draft if something goes really great
for him over the next month or. SO i, mean

his family for as long As dennis has been in the,

that you guys had With dennis about his Son jasper

in the first season At kentucky that's coming.

UP i think to me that the biggest takeaway is
how That dennis and because of What dennis has Told,
jasper how they're both trying to just use this all
star experience of The Nike Hoop summit And Jordan brand
classic and The Iverson classic coming. Up it's just kind
of a learning. Experience jasper didn't get the playing time
he wanted or would liked to have pad in The Nike Hoop,

summit But dennis was trying to explain how That all
the people that he talked to, said how you show
up in practice is really other people are watching and
paying the most attention to and that's what. You jasper did.
Well and he also Told jastra that you've got to
learn to handle some adversity along the, way and sometimes
you don't get to play as much as well what
you want in different, games or get as man shots

as you, want or hope TO i everything. Right you've
got to learn how to handle all. That so that
they're trying to learn it to use it as a learning,
experience And dennis said they also have tried to remember
to feel how blessed they. Are they're thinking two or
three years, ago you're talking, about, man it'd be great
one day to have a chance to play in some
of these, games and that now that you, are don't
be patent because you didn't get to play quite as

much as what you. Wanted go ahead and enjoy the
experience and then get ready for when you get To,
kentucky which is going to be a whole different kind
of experience for.

to his caddy for helping him kind of have a

that he wanted so, desperately and he hits it in
the trap and Bakes bogian has to go to a,
playoff and he said. This caddy looked at him and,

reset to kind of you, know not dwell on the.

YEAH i think that's What dennis was trying to kind
of emphasize To jasper because for the last couple of,
years everything on the court has been really, calm well For,
jasper and everything has just fallen in place that a
whole lot of real adversity to have to deal, with
and to go to The Nike Hoop summon and suddenly
just get to play five minutes in a game that
wasn't Something Jasper johnson was used. To so, again that

was a good chance to kind of learn and not
have to dwell on the bad part of that getting
ready to go to college where you're going to probably
have some experiences like. That SO i think that's a
neat approach to. Take i'm not sure that every parent
or player can do, that BUT i think, that to
me was what resonated the most of What dennis has
said about The All star time That jasper has been,

having and of COURSE i didn't get to talk to
him a whole, lot but about the shooting performance at
The Overtime elite when he was doing that combine drill
and went twenty two or twenty twenty two or twenty

certainly got the attention of his receivers coach with what

Kentucky Former New Mexico state running Back seth McGowan is
committed to The wildcats over the. Weekend started out At,
oklahoma was actually recruited there by the coach that he'll
be playing for now in the running back, Room Coach Jay.
Bulwaer he had some off the field issues At, oklahoma

out of football for a, year finds his way back
to the big time here and what does he bring
to the.

John, yeah on the, field it looks like a really interesting.
Addition you always worry about a guy who did not
play football for so long being rusty or losing some of.

That he didn't play at.

All he wasn't on a team at all in twenty
twenty one after his legal issue At, oklahoma and then
twenty twenty two he was IN aia school where minunderstand
he's basically just a practice. Player he didn't have a
single carry that, season and then he kind of barely
played at a junior college the next year before last
year finally getting back To division one At New Mexico
state and having a big impact. There but he looked

like he hadn't really missed a. Beat he made plays
with his, legs he made plays in the passing game
as a, receiver had over a thousand yards all purpose
between those.

Two and six.

Touchdowns so certainly looks like a guy that if that
translates to THE sec and cashes in on some of that.
Hype he was a four star guy out of high
school From texas that could be a big weapon for this.

Offense as far as the legal, ISSUES i would assume
that as his new, coach you would hope that his
experience was, humbling and you, know getting back with a
coach that recruited him, probably you, know is helpful in the.
Process and you know he's out of second, chances one would,
think so now he's got a great.

Opportunity, yeah it's going to be interesting to hear How
Mark stoops addresses that because obviously such a big emphasis
this offseason has been rebuilding their culture and doing all
the things they need to do to get things right
off the.

Field and you bring in the guy with legal trouble and.

You know they had it brought Hardly gilmore back last
week's who's facing his own you, know much more minor legal.
Charge that's going to be Something mark needs to. Address
but in McGowan's case in, particular he's been very open
in the interviews he did while he was At New
Mexico state about.

What he learned from that.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
PROCESS i, mean it was a robbery with two Other oklahoma,
players all three of.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Them got kicked off the. Team he ended up pleading.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
Guilty to a lesser, charge but spent several, months like
three months in jail while he was awaiting his. Sentence
eventually got a year of probation as part of the plea.
Deal but he talked openly about learning from, that and
it was a dark moment and he'd gone kind of
awayward from the path he, intended and so everything he
said is poised since. Then the reviews At New Mexico
state where that he was a good, teammate good locker room.

Guy but you would hope That Jay, bowlware having been
there At oklahoma when all this, happened is a fairly
good character witness in terms of knowing the player and
knowing the circumstances and what happened from. There but it
is going to be a talking, point there's no way around.
That Like mark's going to have to address that at some.
Point you just hope that they've done their work here
and checked all the.

Boxes as far as on the, field he is a
guy can also catch, passes so he, is from EVERYTHING i,
read a guy that brings some. Explosiveness Dal dell's more
of the you, know between the tackles power running Back
patterson supposedly had a good. Spring shaberi and Will cox

has had bright moments in two one hundred yard rushing
games last season in the second half the last four.
Games he had double digit carries in all of them
and put up good. Numbers so that would suggest the
fact that you, know he's doesn't seem like at the
moment to be as prominent in the mix as those
numbers might. Suggest tells you that that's probably on him

to make some.

Changes, yeah that's going to be the really interesting part
to watch between now AND i Think, friday when the
portal closes What wilcox, does because the two practices we
saw in spring he was a clear third on the
depth chart Behind dowble And Jason, patterson and THAT i
think was a message to. Him we know last year
that for all his talent and all his, explosiveness like

he had some issues mastering the playbook and learning the
offense and doing all the little things you got to
do for them to count on you when they put
you in the. Game and so that has to be
part of. It Like Mark, STOOPS i asked him about
him after the spring game or whatever we want to call,
that and he, said he's made.

Progress he's doing all the right.

Things he's a good, kid but like it's clear there's
more work there, needed and they're not in a position
where they were going to be you, know for lack
of a better, word held hostage by a guy who's
got super, talent but maybe not all the other things
put together. Yet so they went out and added somebody
else they could have they needed another running back just for,
numbers but instead of going and adding just a depth,
guy they clearly added somebody who could be the. Starter

AND i think that sends a clear message To willcox
and everybody else in the, roster like you've got to
do your part earn those carries now moving.

Forward and you, know assuming he will assume for now
he's still in the, mix you, know still in the
in the. Room that competition usually brings out the best at.

Everybody.

Yeah, Absolutely and and my understanding just from talking to
people around the program has been That, jamerion you, know
has a pretty clear collect grasp on you, know his
situation himself and some of the things he needs to.
DO i never got the impression last year even his
fans were complaining about him not playing, more that like
he was unhappy or that he thought he deserved to
be playing.

MORE i think he knows.

Like the work he needs to do, now it's just
a matter of going out there and doing it assuming that,
he you, know stays through the portal.

WINDOW i, mean there was. Worry there were worries that he.

Was going to, leave that some other school was going
to come poach him and, say you, know come play
in our maybe simpler lot pro style offense and have
a big season in the.

Winter and he's stuck through.

That and so we'll see if that happens now that
they've added another running. Back but assuming it, does it
does feel like he understands like he needs to put
in some work. Too it's not a situation where anyone's
being unfair to.

Him as you, mentioned the portal is about to. Close
do you See kentucky having any more activity in or?

Out, YEAH i MEAN i think mostly by now we
would have seen people leaving who were definitely, Leaving LIKE
i think they've lost six or seven, players most almost
all of them were guys down the depth, chart you,
know obviously looking for more opportunities somewhere. Else the one
maybe exception to that Was wallace And, namba the offensive
lineman For New mexico who came in as a transfer In,

december was clearly a second team guy in spring, practice and.

So with one year of eligibility.

Left he ended UP i think signing With, virginia going
somewhere where he can start right. Away but the other
guys were all kind of buried down the depth, chart
and maybe they developed into good, players but they were
not going to be huge role players in twenty twenty.
Five they could always have more departures if it's a
situation like you, know running back looks at this and, says, oh,
well NOW i don't have an, opportunity or they add
somebody else at a different position in somebody there looks. Elsewhere

seems like they're trying to look for more wide receiver.
Depth they've offered a prominent transfer FROM, byu but basically
every power program is offered in SO i don't know
that we should read too much into. That they had
another tight end over the weekend who was At New
mexico for maybe a couple of weeks it seemed like
in spring, practice but transferred from AN scs Program Weber

state before. That they've offered, him so that's a position
they clear they need some. Depths there's a defensive lineman
out there that they've from THE fcs level At Southeast
missouri that they've, offered but he's taking visits to a
couple of, places so we'll. See it does feel like
there's a couple more positions where they need some, depths
some other, opportunities but in terms of impact starter level,

talent this might be the last one we.

See what about as far as True edwards the wide
receiver from L, tech it looked like that doorhead. Closed
and then there's this CASE i guess involving A rutgers
player that's gone to, court is that is there a
chance that could revive The Drew edwards To Kentucky.

That, yeah it seems like that's his. CIRCUMSTANCE i, mean
it's hard for anybody to give you specifics, here but
my understanding was the, reason you, know even like in
the spring, practice they were optimistic they were going to
get him. Here but they finally got some clarification from
THE encibla that this ruling they issued For Diego, pavia
the quarterback At, vanderbilt about you, know throwing out junior college,

years was only you still have to abide by that
initial five year clock where you, have you, know five
years to complete four seasons with the red, Shirt and
the difference Is true enrolled in college a year Before
Diego pavia, did so the clock is, different and so
they are not thinking he's going to get eligible get
that waiver at this. Point but as you mentioned the
player From, rutgers like he's in the exact same, situation

like he transferred and they appealed the, waiver got it,
denied and now he's suing.

THE nbla has not had very much success in these
legal cases, Recently so if if he wins that, case

something to watch as that case plays.

and a couple of the bigger guys or other combinations beyond.
That but you, know he's got you guys with versatile
skill sets and that seems to certainly obviously be a
good fit for his, system but also they're more certainly
more athletic and more physical than they were last.

Year, absolutely If aberdeen is the guy that comes off the,
bench that'll certainly give them a different defensive presence in
the back court coming off the bench than what they
had last year because the injuries that they went. Through
AND i think it also gives them just a little
bit more protection just on the chance that something would

of THE NFL nba draft if something goes really great
for him over the next month or. SO i, mean
we're all assuming he will be, back but just on
the chance now that he, wouldn't that also kind of
helps give you a little protection there if that was to.

his family for as long As dennis has been in the,

that you guys had With dennis about his Son jasper

in the first season At kentucky that's coming.

UP i think to me that the biggest takeaway is
how That dennis and because of What dennis has Told,
jasper how they're both trying to just use this all
star experience of The Nike Hoop summit And Jordan brand
classic and The Iverson classic coming. Up it's just kind
of a learning. Experience jasper didn't get the playing time
he wanted or would liked to have pad in The Nike Hoop,

summit But dennis was trying to explain how That all
the people that he talked to, said how you show
up in practice is really other people are watching and
paying the most attention to and that's what. You jasper did.
Well and he also Told jastra that you've got to
learn to handle some adversity along the, way and sometimes
you don't get to play as much as well what
you want in different, games or get as man shots

as you, want or hope TO i everything. Right you've
got to learn how to handle all. That so that
they're trying to learn it to use it as a learning,
experience And dennis said they also have tried to remember
to feel how blessed they. Are they're thinking two or
three years, ago you're talking, about, man it'd be great
one day to have a chance to play in some
of these, games and that now that you, are don't
be patent because you didn't get to play quite as
(23:23):
much as what you. Wanted go ahead and enjoy the
experience and then get ready for when you get To,
kentucky which is going to be a whole different kind
of experience for.

Yeah, yeah along those. LINES i saw an interview With
rory McIlroy after The masters which he was giving credit
to his caddy for helping him kind of have a
mental reset after the eighteenth hole of regulation when he's
sitting there in the middle of the fairway after one
shot and all he's got to do is put it
on the green and two putt to win The masters

that he wanted so, desperately and he hits it in
the trap and Bakes bogian has to go to a,
playoff and he said. This caddy looked at him and,
said you, know at the beginning of the, week if
you had said you'd be in this position to go
to a playoff to get Your, masters.

You'd have been.

Thrilled and so you said that helped, him you, know
reset to kind of you, know not dwell on the.

Adversity. Maybe.

YEAH i think that's What dennis was trying to kind
of emphasize To jasper because for the last couple of,
years everything on the court has been really, calm well For,
jasper and everything has just fallen in place that a
whole lot of real adversity to have to deal, with
and to go to The Nike Hoop summon and suddenly
just get to play five minutes in a game that
wasn't Something Jasper johnson was used. To so, again that
(24:38):
was a good chance to kind of learn and not
have to dwell on the bad part of that getting
ready to go to college where you're going to probably
have some experiences like. That SO i think that's a
neat approach to. Take i'm not sure that every parent
or player can do, that BUT i think, that to
me was what resonated the most of What dennis has
said about The All star time That jasper has been,

having and of COURSE i didn't get to talk to
him a whole, lot but about the shooting performance at
The Overtime elite when he was doing that combine drill
and went twenty two or twenty twenty two or twenty
five on three. Pointers that gets your attention, Too.

Does let's shift gears to a little. Football there's a
guy from over your way there in The danville, Area
Boyle county, specifically that made a nice impression during spring
practice and maybe the best catch of that spring showcase
right on the last.

Drive, Yeah i'm glad you were right there on the
sideline of what he was.

Doing there a great.

View, yeah for folks that know, THOSE i think With
saunders that Or sanders that threw the pass to it
and it got, deflected looks like it's, incomplete And quizenberry
finds a way to pluck it out of the air
and get the touchdown right inside the.

Pylon, Yeah and that's just kind of what he did
all through high. School he just found a way to make.
Plays sometimes they were with him, running sometimes him was
sometimes even with him, passing or sometimes some kick, returns
and sometimes he just found a way to make. Plays
and injuries to some older receivers gave him probably a
few more reps in the spring than maybe what they were,

anticipating and he made the most stup. On, now of
course they brought in another receiver since then other receivers
will be getting healthy for the. Fall so what that
means for, HIM i don't, know BUT i think he
certainly got the attention of his receivers coach with what
he did this.

Kentucky Former New Mexico state running Back seth McGowan is
committed to The wildcats over the. Weekend started out At,
oklahoma was actually recruited there by the coach that he'll
be playing for now in the running back, Room Coach Jay.
Bulwaer he had some off the field issues At, oklahoma
(27:29):
out of football for a, year finds his way back
to the big time here and what does he bring
to the.

John, yeah on the, field it looks like a really interesting.
Addition you always worry about a guy who did not
play football for so long being rusty or losing some of.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
That he didn't play at.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
All he wasn't on a team at all in twenty
twenty one after his legal issue At, oklahoma and then
twenty twenty two he was IN aia school where minunderstand
he's basically just a practice. Player he didn't have a
single carry that, season and then he kind of barely
played at a junior college the next year before last
year finally getting back To division one At New Mexico
state and having a big impact. There but he looked
(28:09):
like he hadn't really missed a. Beat he made plays
with his, legs he made plays in the passing game
as a, receiver had over a thousand yards all purpose
between those.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
Two and six.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
Touchdowns so certainly looks like a guy that if that
translates to THE sec and cashes in on some of that.
Hype he was a four star guy out of high
school From texas that could be a big weapon for this.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Offense as far as the legal, ISSUES i would assume
that as his new, coach you would hope that his
experience was, humbling and you, know getting back with a
coach that recruited him, probably you, know is helpful in the.
Process and you know he's out of second, chances one would,
think so now he's got a great.
Speaker 5 (28:52):
Opportunity, yeah it's going to be interesting to hear How
Mark stoops addresses that because obviously such a big emphasis
this offseason has been rebuilding their culture and doing all
the things they need to do to get things right
off the.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
Field and you bring in the guy with legal trouble and.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
You know they had it brought Hardly gilmore back last
week's who's facing his own you, know much more minor legal.
Charge that's going to be Something mark needs to. Address
but in McGowan's case in, particular he's been very open
in the interviews he did while he was At New
Mexico state about.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
What he learned from that.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
PROCESS i, mean it was a robbery with two Other oklahoma,
players all three of.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Them got kicked off the. Team he ended up pleading.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
Guilty to a lesser, charge but spent several, months like
three months in jail while he was awaiting his. Sentence
eventually got a year of probation as part of the plea.
Deal but he talked openly about learning from, that and
it was a dark moment and he'd gone kind of
awayward from the path he, intended and so everything he
said is poised since. Then the reviews At New Mexico
state where that he was a good, teammate good locker room.
(29:52):
Guy but you would hope That Jay, bowlware having been
there At oklahoma when all this, happened is a fairly
good character witness in terms of knowing the player and
knowing the circumstances and what happened from. There but it
is going to be a talking, point there's no way around.
That Like mark's going to have to address that at some.
Point you just hope that they've done their work here
and checked all the.

Boxes as far as on the, field he is a
guy can also catch, passes so he, is from EVERYTHING i,
read a guy that brings some. Explosiveness Dal dell's more
of the you, know between the tackles power running Back
patterson supposedly had a good. Spring shaberi and Will cox
(30:33):
has had bright moments in two one hundred yard rushing
games last season in the second half the last four.
Games he had double digit carries in all of them
and put up good. Numbers so that would suggest the
fact that you, know he's doesn't seem like at the
moment to be as prominent in the mix as those
numbers might. Suggest tells you that that's probably on him
(30:55):
to make some.

Changes, yeah that's going to be the really interesting part
to watch between now AND i Think, friday when the
portal closes What wilcox, does because the two practices we
saw in spring he was a clear third on the
depth chart Behind dowble And Jason, patterson and THAT i
think was a message to. Him we know last year
that for all his talent and all his, explosiveness like
(31:17):
he had some issues mastering the playbook and learning the
offense and doing all the little things you got to
do for them to count on you when they put
you in the. Game and so that has to be
part of. It Like Mark, STOOPS i asked him about
him after the spring game or whatever we want to call,
that and he, said he's made.

Progress he's doing all the right.
Speaker 5 (31:33):
Things he's a good, kid but like it's clear there's
more work there, needed and they're not in a position
where they were going to be you, know for lack
of a better, word held hostage by a guy who's
got super, talent but maybe not all the other things
put together. Yet so they went out and added somebody
else they could have they needed another running back just for,
numbers but instead of going and adding just a depth,
guy they clearly added somebody who could be the. Starter
(31:54):
AND i think that sends a clear message To willcox
and everybody else in the, roster like you've got to
do your part earn those carries now moving.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Forward and you, know assuming he will assume for now
he's still in the, mix you, know still in the
in the. Room that competition usually brings out the best at.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
Everybody.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
Yeah, Absolutely and and my understanding just from talking to
people around the program has been That, jamerion you, know
has a pretty clear collect grasp on you, know his
situation himself and some of the things he needs to.
DO i never got the impression last year even his
fans were complaining about him not playing, more that like
he was unhappy or that he thought he deserved to
be playing.

MORE i think he knows.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
Like the work he needs to do, now it's just
a matter of going out there and doing it assuming that,
he you, know stays through the portal.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
WINDOW i, mean there was. Worry there were worries that he.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
Was going to, leave that some other school was going
to come poach him and, say you, know come play
in our maybe simpler lot pro style offense and have
a big season in the.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Winter and he's stuck through.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
That and so we'll see if that happens now that
they've added another running. Back but assuming it, does it
does feel like he understands like he needs to put
in some work. Too it's not a situation where anyone's
being unfair to.

Him as you, mentioned the portal is about to. Close
do you See kentucky having any more activity in or?
Speaker 5 (33:12):
Out, YEAH i MEAN i think mostly by now we
would have seen people leaving who were definitely, Leaving LIKE
i think they've lost six or seven, players most almost
all of them were guys down the depth, chart you,
know obviously looking for more opportunities somewhere. Else the one
maybe exception to that Was wallace And, namba the offensive
lineman For New mexico who came in as a transfer In,
(33:34):
december was clearly a second team guy in spring, practice and.

So with one year of eligibility.
Speaker 5 (33:40):
Left he ended UP i think signing With, virginia going
somewhere where he can start right. Away but the other
guys were all kind of buried down the depth, chart
and maybe they developed into good, players but they were
not going to be huge role players in twenty twenty.
Five they could always have more departures if it's a
situation like you, know running back looks at this and, says, oh,
well NOW i don't have an, opportunity or they add
somebody else at a different position in somebody there looks. Elsewhere
(34:02):
seems like they're trying to look for more wide receiver.
Depth they've offered a prominent transfer FROM, byu but basically
every power program is offered in SO i don't know
that we should read too much into. That they had
another tight end over the weekend who was At New
mexico for maybe a couple of weeks it seemed like
in spring, practice but transferred from AN scs Program Weber
(34:22):
state before. That they've offered, him so that's a position
they clear they need some. Depths there's a defensive lineman
out there that they've from THE fcs level At Southeast
missouri that they've, offered but he's taking visits to a
couple of, places so we'll. See it does feel like
there's a couple more positions where they need some, depths
some other, opportunities but in terms of impact starter level,
(34:43):
talent this might be the last one we.

See what about as far as True edwards the wide
receiver from L, tech it looked like that doorhead. Closed
and then there's this CASE i guess involving A rutgers
player that's gone to, court is that is there a
chance that could revive The Drew edwards To Kentucky.

That, yeah it seems like that's his. CIRCUMSTANCE i, mean
it's hard for anybody to give you specifics, here but
my understanding was the, reason you, know even like in
the spring, practice they were optimistic they were going to
get him. Here but they finally got some clarification from
THE encibla that this ruling they issued For Diego, pavia
the quarterback At, vanderbilt about you, know throwing out junior college,
(35:26):
years was only you still have to abide by that
initial five year clock where you, have you, know five
years to complete four seasons with the red, Shirt and
the difference Is true enrolled in college a year Before
Diego pavia, did so the clock is, different and so
they are not thinking he's going to get eligible get
that waiver at this. Point but as you mentioned the
player From, rutgers like he's in the exact same, situation
(35:49):
like he transferred and they appealed the, waiver got it,
denied and now he's suing.

To say he should get it. Anyway like we, know.

THE nbla has not had very much success in these
legal cases, Recently so if if he wins that, case
maybe they just open it up.

To every junior college player who played their last.

Season last year And true gets back in. There but
the other THING i don't know with him is like
if he's not going to be, eligible like he's got to,
start you, know the drafts this. WEEKEND i don't think
he's going to get, drafted but he probably wants to
get in the camp, somewhere and SO i don't know
if he's moved on yet at this, point but it's
something to watch as that case plays.
