Speaker 1 (00:00):
We've made it to Friday, Good Day. Everybody welcome in.
It is the lead report presented by Bobcat Enterprises, and
we will talk a good bit of Kentucky football today
with Adam Luckett from on three Sports and KSR, Maggie
Davis from BBN tonight and also Doug Flynn will lead
us off and he's going into the UK Athletics Hall

(00:22):
of Fame tonight along with five others, so we'll talk
a little bit about that in the month of sports
celebration here in the city of Lexington for its two
hundred and fiftieth anniversary. All that coming up on today's
edition of the show. Opening segment of Wildcat News, always
presented by Joseepies of Lexington. Six person class going into

(00:42):
the UK Athletics Hall of Fame tonight, including Doug plus MICHAELA. Epps,
Abby Cheek, Ramsey, Carl Anthony Towns, Josh Hines Allen and
Sonya Hahn. Those are the six that will be recognized
tonight and will also be recognized at the game tomorrow

(01:03):
night between Kentucky and Eastern Michigan, which we'll kick off
around seven thirty. Espn U will have the TV coverage.
We'll have the UK Radio network call and our pregame
will start at five thirty Eastern time. Tomorrow's Kentucky takes
on an Eastern Michigan team that is struggling. At oh
and two, their opponents have rushed for three hundred and

(01:24):
twelve yards per game. Through two contests, They've averaged their
opponents seven point four yards per rush. Only one team
in the country has a worse stat in that particular category. Offensively,
their numbers are a little better number three in the
MAC in total offense three hundred and fifty one yards

(01:44):
a game, but they're struggling defensively, and it is a
Kentucky team that needs to find a rhythm to its
passing attack to get its offense going. I think Kentucky
has shown signs of having a very productive rushing attack.
Now they need to find a way to marry it

(02:05):
with at least a more effective passing attack. And we'll
see Cutter Bowley tomorrow and at some level, Mark Stoops
has not made any announcement yet on who will start,
but Cutter Bowley is going to play. Coach Stoops has
said that, and one would think that if Cutter does
well that he can take might get a chance to

(02:28):
take the job and run with it because Kentucky's looking
for better play at that particular position. One thing to
watch tomorrow. Big plays on both sides of the ball
hurt Kentucky in the loss to Ole Miss. They've given
up i think twelve plays of twenty or more yards
through two games, and that is not typical of Brad

(02:49):
White's defenses. So you figure that we'll get there will
be improvement there, but they have to get better on
that side of the ball at the limiting exposive plays
and they have to get better at creating them on
the other side of the ball, and that's what they
will be looking for out of that passing attack tomorrow.
So we'll talk about that when Adam joins us a

(03:10):
little bit later on. UK has announced the date for
Big Blue Madness for men's and women's basketball and it
will be Saturday, October the eleventh. Usually this event's on
a Friday ahead of a football game, but there's an
open date in mid October on the eleventh for the
football team, so no football game that weekend, so they'll

(03:32):
do Madness on Saturday. So maybe you can do the
Keenland Big Blue Madness doubleheader instead of Keenland and Kentucky football.
That'll be coming up here before you know it. Practices
have started back on a small scale for the men's
basketball team. Goose and I were there last week. They're

(03:55):
doing a lot of individual work, but they'll have full
team practices on an infrequent basis. They'll really start to
ramp it up here later this month and then into October.
It all intensifies toward that first exhibition game on October
twenty fourth against Purdue. By the way, I was talking
with Mike Decorsi on Wednesday and we were talking about

(04:17):
the breakdown of minutes and how that could work for
this year's Kentucky team that's going to be so deep,
and I was referencing the ninety six team went back
and we As Mike and I were having the conversation,
I punched up the stats and I had a couple
of errors I need to correct. Tony Delk did not
average the most minutes. He averaged twenty six point three.

(04:40):
Antoine Walker averaged the most minutes at twenty six point nine.
Tony was a leading scorer, and that's where I got
it confused. So very similar both just under twenty seven
minutes a game, but Antoine did average the most minutes,
the seventh most. I said it was Anthony Apps. It
was actually Ron Mercer at eighteen point eight. But still
that's seven guys between nineteen minutes and twenty seven minutes.

(05:03):
And I think it could be a similar situation for
this upcoming Kentucky team. Gonna get to a break, come
back and chat with Doug Flynn. Leach Report's opening segment
always presented by Giuseppes of Lexington. They are located off
Nicholasville Road, just out past madow War Boulevard here in Lexington,
and they've been doing a work, the work at a

(05:24):
high level for more than a quarter of a century,
talking about homemade pastas, handcut steaks, seafood that's shipped in
fresh every day, locally sourced ingredients for a lot of
their sides, and then just the ambiance. It's really special
that just sepie, full wine and bourbon selections. There's like
more than a one hundred and thirty different bourbon options
that you can try at Giuseppees of Lexington. So make

(05:46):
your reservation at open table. We'll be right back with
Doug Flynn quarter past the top of the hour, and
it is the Leach Report, presented by Bobcat Enterprises each day.
And we are joined now by Doug Flynn, who's going
into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame tonight. One of
several topics to touch on. But congratulations, nice honor, well deserved.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Thank you. Very shocked. Tom. I keep thinking I'm being
punked by Aston Coocher and jo I'm I was just
blown away. You know, there's there's certain things in your
life where you say, you know there's a potential that
I might be able to do this, or that this
one never came across my radars. So I'm indeed humbled

(06:30):
and very grateful.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
More than twenty years working with the UK TV network
on baseball coverage, you know, working with Dick Gabriel, that
that may have gotten you into the Hall of Fame
right there.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
You know, you're probably right, we gave it. I try
to figure out how many years we've been working together.
We're really not sure.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
It's at the according to the release I saw, it's
like said started in two thousand and four, so that's
two decades.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Well, yeah, we were doing we were doing some local
stuff before we started doing SEC plus. Yeah, and uh
but I tell you, Gabe has proven that as long
as you have one broadcaster that knows the English language,
you can bring in another one that may not.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
You guys make a great partnership. And love listened to
you when you did some Reds games with Marty as well.
Who So I told me camera, who may is Oscar?
That Marty's coming for the ceremony tonight? Is that right?

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Yeah? He found out about it and he said I'm
coming to your thing, and I went, okay, good. So
he and Rick Walls, who kind of runs the Reds
Hall of Famer, driving down together tonight.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
All right, Well that's all right.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
You know, very flattering. And of course I just spent
the weekend up there watching Marty get his statue.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, no, I wish I was otherwise occupied, but I
would love to have been there for for that on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
You know, this is this is so cool time, you know,
growing up here, you and I both we've we've been here,
seemed like well we have our whole lives. And I
remember as a kid growing up and keeping the scorecard
when I would listen to guys like Larry Percival, and
Terry Mobley and Cotton Ash and those guys play ball
and then to get a chance, you know, to go
on that floor. Of course, I played twelve games there

(08:16):
as a high school senior at Memorial Collis.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Oh did you really?

Speaker 2 (08:19):
But never did I? Yeah, well we used to remember
we do the fourteen doubleheaders. Oh yeah, teams would all
play there and then we'd have the district would be
there and the region would be there. So we played
a lot of games on that floor. So I was
on there a bunch before I even came over here
as a freshman to play.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
And that that was in a days when freshman couldn't
play varsity, So there was still a freshman team that
you were a part of.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
That's yeah, that's true, and that's but that's not why
I wasn't playing on the varsity. That varsity was pretty
durned good.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
They had Pratt, neissel Casey were They were better at
that time.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
You know, I've got to admit that that they were.
Everybody on that varsity was better than me. I was
five eight and one hundred and forty seven pounds, just
trying to hold on and survive, and they were beating
a living tar out of us because we would work
out with them before we would actually have our practice,
and we were just like, I mean, you could see

(09:23):
their mouth just water and said, all right, we're gonna
beat that car out of these guys.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
All right, we'll hear a lot of great you.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Know, I tell you go ahead. It was a great
growing up here for me, Tom, because it really it
instilled in me how and what I needed to do
to play at a higher level. And when you watch
those guys who were like machines, they ended up getting
beat by Jacksonville that year because Insel found out with
about twelve minutes to go in the game. But they

(09:50):
were really professionals. They were great people, and I learned
a lot of wonderful lessons just in that one year
here at Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
Absolutely very well said, and uh Doug of course went
on to uh uh make it to the major leagues.
It was part of the big red machine. Won a
gold glove and uh gold glove was with was it
with Montreal or or the Mets?

Speaker 2 (10:12):
New York is with the Mets? With the Mets, Yeah
that was I got traded over there, of course for
some guy named Tom sever who was pretty good I've.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Heard he's good. Yes, I've heard that.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
So I think they're still sending money up in New
York for that trade.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
Uh, but you know he was.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
He was really good, and and uh we were just blessed,
you know, because I got a chance to play. Everybody said,
would you like the best playing with the Reds or
with the Mets, And I said, you know, the Reds
was wonderful because I got to watch some of the
best baseball that I've ever been around. But you want
to be an everyday player, Yeah, if you know, once
you get there. And I got to do that for
a few years.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
And we'll hear a lot of these great stories from
from Doug and the other inductees tonight at the u
CA Athletics Hall of Fame. And he can't be there,
I'm sure it'll be up on YouTube and social media
and you get to see all that. You're also involved
with what's going on all month here in the city
of Lexington, your hometown where it's just celebrating is two
hundred and fiftieth anniversary and it is Sports Month here

(11:15):
in September. They just finished up Football Week, but it's
a part of celebration of sports and there's a great
obviously tradition of sports here, and baseball, your primary sport,
doesn't get enough credit for all the major leaguers that
the city's produced.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
You know, it really has time and but that's kind
of biblical, you know, when you grow up in a town,
that's where you get the least publicity, not in my case,
but in the case with some of these other sports
guys that have come through. But you and I both
know not only did we have the legends here now,
but we have the lection and the hustlers. Your dad
and my dad played on that team and that was

(11:53):
like a professional baseball team.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
First integrated, the team south of the Mason Dixon Line,
I think is how it was described. So there's a
historic operation, you know, and we've.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
Not only that, but when you look through the list
of stuff that we've had over the years, I mean,
look at the great golfers we've had, like y gaber
Myyron Blackwoman, Yeah, he was wonderful. I mean skiing the McKinneys,
Camera and Steve McKinney were just outstanding World Cup skiers.
But this town was just loaded. When you start looking

(12:26):
at all of the people that and you know we're
we're pretty much a UK town and deservedly so. But
there's a lot of other folks that have come through here,
even gone through the UK and then gone on.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
To the Olympics.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
I didn't realize this. UK athletes earned thirteen medals at
the twenty twenty four Olympics. Did you know that?

Speaker 1 (12:44):
It's impressive, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (12:47):
Nine gold and two silver and two brons and.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
One of them is here?

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Say something else?

Speaker 1 (12:50):
Come, I didn't grow up, and I didn't do much
to show you out. Well, the fencing we did was
with hammer and nails maybe, but.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
That's true. Yeah, she won the gold medal, which is awesome.
But look at the sportscasters too, and I think you
go on this list, my friend. Well they start looking
at Tom Hammond and Kenny Rice and you know, Michael Eves,
guys that went on Nashally. I'm thankful that people like you,
who I think are just outstanding broadcasters, have stayed around

(13:19):
here and done it because all of us get a
chance to hear you. And I'm sure you could have
gone to other places too, But we're glad we got
you here, my friends.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Thank you much. Said glad that we had Doug Flynn
to follow and be so proud of, like all those
other names you mentioned, when you make it to the
highest level. Last thing, the Reds. I thought they were dead.
They're still in there.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
It's amazing, man.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
They're like now to do a game and a half.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Somebody, yeah, somebody described it the other day. They're like
the Reds playing ball are like a kid, little baby
with food. They just start spreading it all around. And
often they take something, they put it in their mouth
and eat it and then in and around.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
They're amazing to watch. They're frustrating to watch because they
have some talent, but they don't play just quality baseball.
If they ever did start doing the little things, they
would have a pretty nice ball club. And right now
the Mets are just folding big time and the Giants
and the Reds are just right there, game and a
half behind.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
The amazing Maybe they'll pull it out. It would be wonderful. Uh, Doug,
I appreciate that time.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Thank you, Tom. Are you doing tonight? Are you seeing tonight?

Speaker 1 (14:30):
I will see you tonight. Oh good, So we'll good try.
We'll try to keep it moving.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Friends.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Keep keep your street under an hour, they.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Told me five minutes. Five minutes? Does it? I can't
say my name in five minutes.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
We'll see. We'll put the plot on you tonight. Good.
I'll be looking forward to seeing you. Thank you, Doug,
you too, but thanks Tom. You can't like's Hall of
Fame event coming up tonight. It's always really special to
hear all of those stories from Doug and the other
inductees who will be honored tonight and tomorrow at the game.
Quick break, we'll talk football with Adam Bluckett. What do
we return? It's the Leach Report from the Clark's Pumping

(15:05):
Shop studio. Return, Refresh and refuel at Clark's.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
I think I'm just more confident in everything I'm doing.
That's why I'm more a vocal leader. I'm not like,
you know, that was something I need to work on.
But you know my confidence and how I know the playbook,
how I know the plays I can start telling people
what it because I know where the're supposed to be at,
you know, I mean, I can get things right and
get people set up because I know what's going on.
I'm just more confident and more fluid in offense. I'm
just preparing like I have every week coming up leading

(15:31):
into this, I've always prepared like I'm the starter and I'm
going to continue to do so.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
That is Cutter Bowley And we'll see if he is
in fact the starter when the game kicks off tomorrow
between Kentucky and Eastern Michigan. But we do know he's
going to play more than we've seen him to this point.
And as we are joined by Adam Luckett from on
three Sports and KSR to talk about Kentucky football, what
would be the best case scenario for Kentucky to out

(16:00):
of Cutter Bully tomorrow given you know it's just his
second start, but there is a need there for better
play at that position. So what would you be looking
to see?

Speaker 5 (16:10):
Yeah, I think first from just a bowlie angle, I
think you just want to see him look comfortable and
look like he can be the starter. I think you
know there is an injury, but when they're pressing this
button tom we all know like eventually they wanted to
turn to him to be the guy quarterbacks. So you
want to see him kind of sees this opportunity, So
you want to see him take it, go out there
and play well. And I think offensively, you just want

(16:34):
to see him score points, obviously, but I think it's
very important that they play a clean game and try
to avoid, you know, some of the mistakes we saw
last week with the pre snat kind of circus that
went on and then just some of the untimely penalty.
So I think you want to see them play clean football,
and you want to see Cutter Bully sees this opportunity
and look like he belongs as kind of the the

(16:55):
starting quarterback for the Kentucky offense.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
Missed a couple of opportunities for plays on it, and
I think his first drive with the potential touchdown pass
to Rodriguez and the fourth down throw where he missed Law,
but he came back and really made a nice throw
to Gilmour for a big game that set up a
field goal, and he threw that into a tight window
and he cut it loose as soon as he saw
the opening. That's what you want to see more of, right,

(17:18):
That decisiveness.

Speaker 5 (17:20):
Yeah, and I think you go back to even what
was kind of Cutter's bio or scout coming out of
high school. That was that's kind of the Cutter Bolly experience.
You're going to see big time throws You're gonna see
him make some plays that not a lot of quarterbacks
that you've seen play Kentucky can make. But you're also
going to see some of the inefficient decision making, not

(17:43):
pulling it, not making the decision to throw the football
there to loll. Turnovers were a big thing for him
his last couple years of high school there at Lexington Christian.
So I think it's going to be a little bit
of a roller coaster here with him, But you just
have to helpe the pros now outweigh the cons more
after he's a couple of years in the system.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
We will talk more about Kentucky football with Adam Luckett
when we come right back. It is the Leach Report
Radio Network. It's presented by Bobcat Enterprises for locations around
the state. Google Bobcat. When you need to buy or
rent heavy equipment, I'll give you a great service after
the sale as well. Second half of the Leach Report
for this Friday, Hall of Fame weekend for UK Athletics,

(18:24):
and you've got volleyball with their home opener coming up
tomorrow against number ten SMU part of a four team
event at the Memorial Colisseum going on tomorrow and Sunday.
Kentucky will play Houston on Sunday and the first chance
to see coach Skinner squad in action at the Coliseum

(18:44):
in a while. Adam Luckett is with us from all
the three sports and KSR and so Cutter bowling tomorrow.
I think the expectation is that he starts. But again,
whatever whatever it plays out there, he's going to play
a lot more. And so sometimes when you have a

(19:05):
different quarterback, a different receiver, maybe for whatever reason, emerges
as a favorite target. Last year we thought maybe Jimori
Macklin would would be more of a factor, and with
so many targets for Key and Brown, he didn't get
the ball his way much. But then later the season

(19:26):
when Wimsat he was down to the Tennessee game, Wimsat
came in at quarterback and all of a sudden, Macklin
catches a couple of big long plays. So would any thought,
Adam that about who might emerge if to be maybe
a favorite target for Cutter.

Speaker 5 (19:46):
Yeah, I think you look back to that Texas game
tom when Cutter Bowley got in in the second half.
I believe Willie Rodriguez had three receptions in that half
targeted a few more times. So that's that's obviously when
I will watch that that say Harley Gilmore too as well.
He connected to him on that big square end that
completed that pad set them up for the field goal.

(20:07):
I'm there against Ole Miss Gilmour Bowley and Willie Roriguez
were in that same signing class, that twenty twenty four
class that we're seeing make a kind of a big
impact or starting to make a sizeable impact. They're on
defense and offensively. I think he could see some of
that start to play out. So I would definitely look
to those guys that he's been you know that he
knows that he's not known, and it's been throwing the

(20:27):
football too for multiple years. So I think Gilmore and
Rodriguez already have a role in the offense. I wouldn't
be surprised if those two maybe become like the big
winners from a target share perspective because of their I
think relationship they have with Bowley already.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
Kentucky significantly it appears as upgraded its offensive line and
it's running attack. The passing game lost two potential NFL
caliber guys in Key and Brown, and so first depth
chart I think whether there's nine there was nine names
on the depth chart and none of the freshmen. The

(21:02):
freshmen were there. Three freshmen were there, but none of
them have emerged yet. So it's a receiving corps that
doesn't have a leader separating from the pack yet. And
the press coverage they saw a lot of that from
ole Miss last week, very good secondary and week one

(21:22):
from Toledo is in a situation where Adam that I
think back to the quote Brad White had about the
run defense on media Day, it'll be a concern until
it's not. Is a press coverage going to be a
concern until it's not?

Speaker 2 (21:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (21:39):
I think so. It kind of feels like to me, Tom,
like we're back in the twenty twenty season again, because
that was a big conversation during that year was you know,
Terry Wilson was getting a lot of criticism, but there
was people were quick to point out, well, guys aren't
getting open, they can't get off press coverage. I think
this was a worry. I think go into the season,

(22:01):
just what their receiver room was and how they built it.
They tried to I think kind of just take a
bunch of swings and get guys with experience and maybe
hope one or two could emerge, or that the volume
of kind of the depth that they have in that
room over time that could lead to success in the
passing game. But it's not working out too well. I

(22:21):
would say through eight quarters, we'll see if Bolie can
give them a little bit of a spark. But I
think that's gonna be something Kentucky has to deal with
and they're gonna have to eventually. They're gonna have to
hit some over the top, yes, on these defenses. That's
what's gonna have to happen. They're gonna have to go
over the top. They're gonna have to get vertical, and
they're gonna have to hit a deep shot or two
or three or four to get some of these defenses

(22:43):
to loosen up a little bit so they can operate.
And until they do that, that's something they're gonna see.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
And that's a part of the reason. I'm sure why
they ran into some of the operational issues they had
last week, because you're trying to scheme some things where
you know you can't count at this point anyway a
guy maybe to get open just one on one, so
you're doing uh, you know, uh rubs they call them,
or picks essentially, or two or three guys together going

(23:11):
different directions, try to do something to get defenders to
kind of bump into somebody else and somebody pops open
or h and all of those things are you know,
more complex, and you have a bunch of new guys
learning all this, and it's not surprising, I guess, is
it that you're gonna have a few issues with that?

Speaker 5 (23:30):
No, I don't think so. I think the worry would
be that, you know, you've had most of these guys
in since spring, and that really no one else has
kind of emerged or emerged to be kind of a
guy that can win for you on the outside. So
if that hasn't happened yet, why would it happen magically,
you know, in October because these are all older, proven players,

(23:54):
so you're almost they're getting close to me tom where
it's almost a situation where you give it a few
more weeks, but like you can't wait, like you're gonna
have to eventually maybe try some younger guys, or try
guys in some different spots. Maybe they're already doing that,
Maybe they're already doing some tinkering like that. So I
mentioned some of these younger guys, so I would expect Harley.

Speaker 1 (24:11):
Gilmour to get more of a bigger role.

Speaker 5 (24:14):
DJ Miller was a true freshman. He's been hurt, but
as soon as he gets back healthy, he was expected
to be part of that rotation, so I wouldn't be
surprised to see see him get get more snaps once
that happens. And also that they keep telling us that
they thought they had guys open and plays were there.
So even though they are struggling, they are there are

(24:34):
times where they feel like they should be able to
throw the ball at the quarterback to the liver. The
thing with this offense was the big I think focus
area was we got to fix offensive line and we
have to have two We have to have a good
established tellback. And I think they've done that for the
most part, but still the same problems are happening, and
so now they got to figure out just how can
they raise the floor of the passing game. But again

(24:56):
it's all concerning because that felt like the top goal
of the offseason. Get all this experience, get guys who
can execute, and then we're going to be able to
raise the floor or We're not going to be great,
but we're not going to be I would say terrible.
And through eight quarters it's just been bad.

Speaker 1 (25:11):
Yeah, no it has. And we're talking with Adam Luckett
from on three Sports and KSR you made the twenty
twenty comparison. Let's go back even further to ninety nine
when they had lost guys that played with Tim Couch,
like Craig East and Kevin Coleman, et cetera. And they
didn't have any stand out wide receiver yet at that point,

(25:37):
but they found in All America tight end and it
became a go to guy in James Whalen. Could it
be that they end up having to lean more on
the tight end group than maybe they would ideally want to.

Speaker 5 (25:49):
Yeah, and I think that's already. We saw that in
the game, like they had Willie Rodriguez split out, ride
out wide, kind of playing that exposition into the boundary
and he runs, you know, a dig route against Ole
Miss's best corner and they threw it to him. So yeah,
I think you're gonna see more and more of them
try to get him the ball because I do think
they probably think he's one of their top past catchers.

(26:11):
So I think he's gonna be how his usage and
how they use him not only I think like target wise,
but also formation wise. How they try to utilize him
is obviously going to be something that I think you're
seeing him throw the ball a lot to Josh Kattis,
So I think the tight end position that they're really
hoping that can supplement some of their I think inefficiencies

(26:31):
Right now at receiver.

Speaker 1 (26:32):
We've talked almost well, we have talked exclusively about offense,
defensive side, several good things to talk about, and they've
got to figure out a way to limit more of
the big plays though right.

Speaker 5 (26:46):
Right absolutely, I think you love the way they're starting
these games time like they're starting fast, they're getting takeaways early,
and they're doing their part for Kentucky to play with
the lead, which I think is really important for Mark
Stoops team is to play with lead, and the defense
is doing their part by starting these games fast. I
think the explosive plays were an issue, but most of
that time to me was tackling. The inability to tackle

(27:10):
in space was really what led to oh missus chunks
to me, outside of the fourth and short when they
just got kind of got caught but tackling is brilliant
that I think the number one focus area for Kentucky.
I think they missed DJ Waller last week. Obviously, they
asked a lot of to Ryan Nichols and JQ Hardaway
to play that many stats in that many possessions against

(27:32):
that kind of offense that that's gonna run you vertical
a lot. They asked a lot of them, But they
need to tackle better in space. But you can even
go back to fall camp. That was a huge concern
after that first scrimmage and Brad White was really concerned
about their tackling. It was solid I think in week
one and then week two it showed some inefficiency and
that's something they have to get cleaned up because how

(27:54):
they play structurally on defense that you're gonna have to
tackle well in space because you're gonna give up some
of those short complettions and they're willing to bet long
term that ole miss it. We go away from them
after their four or five games of five, six, seven,
eight yards instead of giving up the big chunks that
can be dray starters.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
You could read them at on three sports KSR. What

It is the Leach Report. We're presented be each day
by Bobcat Enterprises. And we'll be right back with Maggie
Davis thirteen away from the top of the hour. It
is the Leach Report for a Friday, and we welcome
in Maggie Davis. You watch your own BBN Tonight on
l e X eighteen. And happy anniversary, by the way,
five years not for you and your husband. I'm not

(28:55):
sure when exactly that is, but it's the five year
anniversary for BBN Tonight.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
Yes, the one year anniversary of my husband and I
was the last month.

Speaker 6 (29:03):
The five year anniversary.

Speaker 3 (29:04):
Of our TV show is this week, so we've been
celebrating having a lot of fun. You were actually the
one who reminded me, because I haven't gotten to five
in my marriage yet, that the gift you give is
would for five years. The Lobal Slugger was a good
a good take on our show the other night, So
I've been using that joke a lot this week, so
I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
Yeah, well I didn't. I had to look it up.
I didn't know it. I know there's like things for
ten and twenty five and one of them's silver and
gold and all that.

Speaker 6 (29:32):
So number one is paper very riveting. That's one I
know so far.

Speaker 1 (29:41):
Tomorrow, Well, let me go back to the anniversary. First
of all, it's been I'm sure great fun for you
to be a part of that show that, you know,
when five years you're established. Obviously, you guys have been
doing all of these, you know, with five most memorable
events or noteworthy events in the time that BBN Tonight's

(30:04):
been on the air. So we've talked about all of that.
Probably the consensus was the Mark Pope news conference because
that was kind of a one of a kind event.
What about interviews? You guys do a lot of interviews.
Do you have if you had a top five of
interviews that you've done for the show? Anybody in particular,
that jumps to mind.

Speaker 6 (30:25):
Gosh, that is such a good question.

Speaker 3 (30:27):
I've actually been trying to think about this because we
wanted to go back and kind of do some like
check in with some of those people, so of course
the Chris Oats story comes to mind. I did like
a big kind of follow up story one year after
his stroke.

Speaker 6 (30:39):
Back in twenty twenty one.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
Twenty twenty two is when I did the story with
him and his mom, and obviously he was back at
Kroger Field this weekend, so we kind of did another
follow up with all the progress he's made.

Speaker 6 (30:50):
It really warmed my heart. I mean, he said he's
doing so much.

Speaker 3 (30:53):
Better mentally, and just by sort of looking at them
and listening to him speak. Obviously he's doing much better
physically as well, but from just to hear him say
he's handling it better mentally was a really positive update.

Speaker 6 (31:05):
One of the first big stories, big interviews.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
I got to do was a feature story with Josh
Pascal and Jacob Cook from the football team and the
golf team. They were roommates, best friends on paper, had
like nothing in common, but were best friends.

Speaker 6 (31:17):
They went to see usf together.

Speaker 3 (31:19):
They really leaned on each other during Josh's cancer diagnosis
and treatment, So that was a really cool story we
got to tell. And recently, I mean, just everything we've
gotten to do in this first year, year and a half.

Speaker 6 (31:30):
Of the Mark Pope Era.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
Of course you mentioned the press conference, but we got
to do some really great stories last year talking with
some of the guys their families. We did National Girls
and Women in Sports Day featuring some of their sisters
and moms, Andrew Car's fiance at the time. So it
was really fun to get to know that first group
of Wildcats, but also some of the people around them
as well.

Speaker 6 (31:50):
And I'm excited for.

Speaker 3 (31:51):
The next five to come hopefully and all the great
interviews we'll get to keep doing and great stories we
get to bring to BBN, because for me, that's really
the best part of our You can go anywhere and
get highlights or stats or whatever, and obviously we'll do
that because it's part of our show. We are delivering
news still at the end of the day, but we
want to do it in a different way, in a
unique way, in a way we are so fortunate to

(32:13):
get to do in a very unique format. So for
us getting to tell this kind of feature in death stories,
I think that's really our bread and butter and it's
what I love the most.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
So football game tomorrow Kentucky and Eastern Michigan Cats trying
to bounce back from a loss heavy favorite. We'll see
to some level cutter bully in this game. When you
walk out of Kroger Field tomorrow night, what would you
like to have seen that will make you eraise your

(32:43):
level of optimism for the rest of the football season.

Speaker 6 (32:46):
A passing touchdown. I mean, it sounds simple.

Speaker 3 (32:49):
I would like to see a passing touchdown at least one,
regardless of who the quarterback is, because I'm getting a
little antsy that we haven't seen that yet.

Speaker 6 (32:58):
Obviously, any any points are good points. I get that.

Speaker 3 (33:01):
Whether it's a kick, an extra point of field goal,
a rushing touchdown, interception, pick six, whatever, all of that
would be great. I want to see a passing touchdown.
Eastern Michigan is not a good team. They do not
have a good record. They do not have any sort
of stout defense that should prevent that. I feel very
confident in Kentucky's defense at this point, so you know,

(33:22):
I don't want to see any major regression. But there's
not a whole lot I need to see or I'm
hoping to see specifically from that side of the ball.
For me, it's really going to be about the offense,
specifically the passing game and how severs look depending on
who is a quarterback. I told this week I want
out there, I'll let it fly Bush. Hampton said, what

(33:42):
do I want to see from Cutter? I want to
let him rip it. I want to see him cut
it up out there, no pun intended.

Speaker 6 (33:47):
And if that's who we see, if that's what it is,
that's what I want to see. I want to see
the receiver Tindle as well.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
Uh. It interesting to see how Bush calls this game
to start because you have an Eastern Michigan team that's
given up over seven yards of carry, like second worst
in the country in terms of yards per carry for
their opponent. But yet you also want to see a
quarterback that is getting a chance to do his thing,

(34:14):
to cut loose and see what you've got moving forward.

Speaker 6 (34:18):
Absolutely, I mean the balance is going to be interesting.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
And obviously I think this is a team where based
on what we've seen in the two.

Speaker 6 (34:25):
Games point.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
So if he wants to go into something.

Speaker 6 (34:35):
I'm all good with that. If you want to run
up the score early, try and do that on the ground.
I get that game plan totally.

Speaker 3 (34:41):
But I think maybe once you develop a little bit
of a cushion or you're trying to rest some of
your back see some of the younger guys, like I'd
like to see Jason Patterson get some more carries in
this game.

Speaker 6 (34:50):
I wanted passing game evolve a little bit more, especially
once we get deeper into the.

Speaker 1 (34:54):
Game, and just to see, you know, guys come out
of this in the passing attack, will a little more confidence
as they go back into the deeper waters of the
sec the two weeks down the road. The other thing
is you haven't you know, if you have a strong performance,
you kind of got a you know, an extra week
to build on that with the open date.

Speaker 6 (35:12):
Yeah, definitely, Baus.

Speaker 3 (35:14):
The bye week have been very time to Kentucky and
obviously we all know you have a tough one come
up right.

Speaker 6 (35:20):
After the bye week of road trip to South Carolina.

Speaker 3 (35:23):
So to build confidence, especially it's bar making a change
at quarterback I think is going to be vital because
Cutter Bully, for being honest, has not.

Speaker 6 (35:30):
Been put in great situations throughout his tenure.

Speaker 3 (35:32):
I mean, having to go against Florida, play the game down,
critical situation, down a bunch of points.

Speaker 6 (35:39):
Same thing at Texas. See actually looks good.

Speaker 3 (35:41):
I thought in Austin for the most part, but again
not a great situation at like a top five team
in the country. Louisville game, very last game of the season.
A lot of guys Hurts are kind of done for
the year. I mean, he that was certainly the worst
we've seen Cutter play, but I think there were a
lot of extenuating circumstances in that game. And then last week,
I mean, he got in for basically one drive, one

(36:02):
and a half possessions. So for me, if it is him,
which it seems it will be, I'll be excited to
see what he does with a little more leeway, a
little more leash, and just getting the start in a
situation that's not so dire, not so high stakes.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
Maggie Davis, BBN Tonight l e X eighteen, Thank.

Speaker 6 (36:20):
You much, Thank you so much.
