Speaker 1 (00:06):
From WTBZ News Radio in Boston. This is New England Weekend,
where each and every week we come together right here
talk about all the topics important to you and the
place where you live. It is great to be back
with you again this week. I'm Nicole Davis. Women who
own small and even larger businesses here in Massachusetts bring
innovative ideas, unique perspectives, a strong sense of empathy and

(00:28):
community to all their hard work and sacrifice and often
find success in the process. Trouble is, running your own
business can actually lead to some pretty intense roadblocks, and
that includes straight up burning out well coming up here
in a few weeks on the South Coast, female business
owners there can come together, share their ideas, talk about
what they're doing, and learn how to keep themselves happy

(00:49):
and healthy at the same time. It's all happening at
the One South Coast Chamber Women's Forum and Expo in Dartmouth.
Katie Green, the vice president of Marketing and Events for
the Chamber, is here to talk about She's been here before. Katie.
It's so good to have you back on the show.
For people who didn't hear your previous interview with us,
tell us a bit about the chamber and what you
do well.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Like the name says, we are based on the south
coast of Massachusetts. We cover basically from se Konk to Wareham.
We have a little bit of Rhode Island sprinkled in
there as well. We have quite a few members from
the Tarridon area and we are the voice of Business,
as our tagline says, we are here to help support
the businesses in our community. We are the second largest

(01:31):
chamber in the Commonwealth, which is a fun little fact
and one of the things a lot of chambers, especially
smaller ones, they focus more on the tourism aspect of things.
We have a separate visitors bureau for that, which is
kind of under the chambers umbrella. So that's why we
can have our main focus on the businesses in the area.

(01:54):
And that's not to say that we don't do things
for businesses and I'm sorry for tourism in the area.
Work very closely with tourism in Fliver and New Bedford
as well. And you know, Nicole, you and I have
spoken before about Chowderfest. That's one of our big tourist
attractions that we do with the chamber while supporting local businesses.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, And what I really appreciate about the work you
do is that many people consider the South Coast to
kind of be like a redeveloping part of the state.
You know, the South Coast was big with fishing and
with industry back in the day, and things have changed obviously,
But tell us about the efforts that you're making to
try to make sure that businesses now in the twenty
first century have what they need to make that part

(02:35):
of the state thrive again.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
So one of the things that we've done in the
last but just over a year now is we had
some changes in management. We were on a co CEO
format and one of our co CEOs retired and when
he retired, we changed his position. We created a new one,
and that would be the vice president of Public Policy,

(02:57):
my colleague Ian Trombley. So Ian does a lot of
works being with legislators, going to different meetings and events
and really trying to do what he can to help
when he speaks to the businesses, see what their needs
are and then bringing that back to our legislators. So
we do a lot of public policy work here at

(03:19):
the Chamber, So we're very well rounded.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
I would say I would say you are, you cover
a lot of different bases, and again you cover a
lot of ground from Wareham straight over to Sea Conk
and right there all along one ninety five and there
are a lot of female owned businesses on the South
Coast and we're here to talk about the Women's Expo.
This is something that's been going on for a few years.
But where did the idea come from?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
So during my time here, they had always done an
expo format with the Women's Forum, so they would have
a keynote speaker, sometimes they do a panel. Then they
would have these women owned businesses and not necessarily just
women owned. Obviously that's where we want our focus to be,
especially with us hosting this event in March for Women's

(04:03):
History Month, but really it's to showcase these businesses large
and small. We have a lot of women large, women
led businesses or family owned being run by the women
of the family here on the South Coast. So this year,
like I mentioned, we haven't done the expo portion of

(04:24):
it since before my time here, before COVID, so we
wanted to shake things up a little bit this year
and do something different. So that's when we decided to
bring back the expo portion and try and promote it
to a lot of these women owned businesses. I do
something here at the Chamber and we call it a
it's a bimonthly thing and it's the Women's Power Lunch.

(04:46):
So it's all women in business who come and join
us at a local area restaurant every other month, and
we talk about lots of stuff. We talk about fun stuff.
We talk about serious stuff, things that we as women
and have encountered in the workplace and how we've combated that,
how we've risen above these challenges and things like that.

(05:08):
But then we have a lot of fun too. We
do a lot of networking. So we have so many
wonderful women who attend that event, we thought, let's give
them a forum, a place to showcase their talents to
more than just the people that attend these lunches. Let's
be sure the whole membership can see these businesses, and

(05:28):
most of those are small, small businesses.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Yeah, you bring up a really good point in that
women have unique needs when it comes to the business world. Obviously,
for many, many years, women were kind of shut out
of business. Frankly, and I still think that women have
some ladders to climb when it comes to true equity
in the business world. So I appreciate that you're offering
women a space. It's not meant to be a separate space,
but more space to celebrate what women have and to

(05:53):
talk about what women need to continue to thrive and
to grow.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
You have the nail on the headpankle. That's exactly what
our goal is exactly.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Yes. Well, and I also appreciate that you have a
burnout recovery coach coming because as somebody who is burned
out and knows a lot about burnout, I really appreciate
that you're putting that front and center because mental health
is important. I think a lot of people just kind
of like, uh, mental health whatever, blah blah blah. It
really matters. And if you're burned out, you can't give
back to your business or yourself.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
No, you can't. You can't. And we'd like to try
and get different speakers every year, and this year when
it came time to think about who we could get,
I suggested a girl, a woman because we're older now.
Who I went to high school with Kate Donovan. She's
a Faller, her native We went to Durfy High School together. Nice,

(06:44):
and she had actually reached out to me a few
months prior after seeing me posted about one of our
women's power lunches and said she would love to come
back to her hometown she lives just outside of New
York City now to come and speak to the chamber
because she's done so she's been so successful with her
burnout business. She started a little bit of a background

(07:06):
on her. She started as an acupuncturist, and she's lived
all over the world. She's lived in Poland, in the
Czech Republic, and she was doing acupuncture there and she
and her husband decided to move back stateside, and when
they did, she realized at some point in that journey
that she had burnt out. And I believe she's had

(07:27):
this burnout happened to her twice so after that happened,
and she speaks a lot about the science behind things
and how even somebody who works in science in medicine,
she was burnt out. So what she speaks about is
how to avoid it if you are burnt out, how
to recover. So I was elated when she had reached

(07:50):
out to me and said she wanted she would be
interested in coming back to speak to the South Coast,
and I said, I have the perfect event for you
to come and speak at. So because like you said,
we're all burnt out man or woman, and this event
is open to everyone to attend because so many people
are affected by burnout. You know, we're always on our phones.
My work day may end at a certain time, but

(08:13):
I guarantee you every night I'm checking my emails at
least once or twice. And I try, and you try
and break those habits so you can stay mentally healthy
and not get burnt out. But it's the world we
live in with technology, it's very hard to do that.
So I'm really looking forward to see what Kate has
to offer to the crowd.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Yeah, I am too, And honestly, I'm looking forward to
all the different business owners. They all bring a little
something different to the expos So are they going to
get to set up tables and boots or is this
just a big networking event? How does this all work?

Speaker 2 (08:48):
It's a little bit of everything, actually, So how it's
going to work is at ten am. That's when we're
going to have anybody who has purchased a table or
a booth, whatever we want to call it. That's open
to anyone. You don't have to be a member of
the Chamber to purchase a table. We have different pricing
whether you are a member.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
Or you're not.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
And you can showcase your goods there. If you have
things that you sell, you're welcome to sell them at
that event. And then at eleven fifteen, so that'll be
about an hour or so that first portion of the
expo and networking. At eleven fifteen, Kate is going to
take the stage and address the crowd. And then immediately
following that, we'll have lunch and she'll be doing individual

(09:28):
Q and A there, and during lunch people will have
the opportunity to network as well. And then when lunch
is over, we're going back into the expo aspect of things.
We're going to have a little little early cocktail hour
and do more networking, more visiting with the different businesses
that are there at the expo. And Kate has actually

(09:49):
written a book, so she'll have copies of her book
for sale and she'll be doing book signings as well.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Phenomenal And what are you hoping that women get out
of this if they decide to come.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
One. I think the main hope is that we all
find a way to to better cope with with how
much stress that we have piled on our shoulders every day,
and not just with work, with family, with friends, or
whatever we have going on. So I think mental health

(10:21):
is a huge is a huge thing, and we hear
about it more and more. So that's that's my biggest takeaway.
But we also one of the big things that we support,
especially with our Women's Power Lunches, is just women supporting
other women in business. That's why I love that event
so much. It's it's a nice We do them on
Friday afternoons and it's a nice way to start your weekend.

(10:43):
There's no clockiness there. It's just people just supporting one another.
And and that's what we really need, especially you know,
there's a lot going on in the world today and
we need we need to support each other as best
we can.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yea, we do. So tell me about the who, what
when we're why of or not? Not not so much
the why, but you know the details about We know why.
But tell me a little bit about you know, where
people should go, how they can sign up, where this
is happening, so on and so forth.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Okay, So if you want to just if you don't
want to do a table at the expo and you
just want to come and hear Kate speak and have lunch.
Those tickets are available on our website at onsouth Coast
dot com. The event is happening on Wednesday, March fifth,
and that's going to be at Rachel's Lakeside. It's in
an event space in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. So the first portion

(11:37):
of the day with the with the expo and the networking,
that starts at ten am and Kate will take the
stage at eleven fifteen and we'll have lunch at noon
and then about one o'clock until two two thirty is
when we'll wrap up the day with the book signings,
more networking, more shopping. If that's what's what's up your

(11:59):
alley and you want to spend some money, because who
doesn't want to spend some money? So I know I
love to shop, so yeah, So all that information is
available in detail and tickets are available on our website
at one South Coast dot com.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Cool. So what other events do you have coming up
in the pipeline, Because you're a very busy person over
there at one sex what else do you have coming
down the pipeline for us I have.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
I am a very busy person and I definitely suffer
from burnt out.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
So I feel that I.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Face my events out so I don't get super burnt out.
We always have Chowder Fast that's on Columbus Day weekends,
so that's way way down the road and hopefully we'll
talk about that as it gets a little bit closer.
But a little bit closer on our calendar is a
brand new event I am super excited for. I think
most New Englanders would be excited for, because you know,

(12:52):
if you're from here, you've got to be a Socks fan.
You really have to be a Socks fan. And we
are doing this brand new event. It's a selectbody scholarship dinner,
and we're excited to announce that we have Johnny Damon
joining us. Johnny Damon, I know, I know, it's so exciting.
We can't wait to have him back up up here

(13:12):
in Boston, the South coast, right. So Johnny's not a company.
He's going to speak to the crowd. We have scholarships
that we're going to be giving out to local students.
Johnny will help with that. We'll have a silent auction
where he'll have autographs, some items, and then he'll he's
going to do a meet and greet at the end
and he'll sign autographs at that time as well. So

(13:34):
it's going to be a really fun night. It's a
great cause. It'll also work serve as a fundraiser for
our scholarships for next year, and hopefully we can make
this a yearly thing where we can just help support
these students down here on the South Coast, and not
necessarily students who are going to school down here, just

(13:54):
South Coast students who could be going anywhere.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
In the country.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
So we're really really exciting to have to I'm super excited.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
You know, I'm remembering back in two thousand and four,
I was there. This is the coolest thing. Really good,
get on that. And honestly, when when is this happening?

Speaker 2 (14:12):
By the way, Oh well that would be important information
for me to tell you a bit excited about Johnny,
that's all I can.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
I know it's easy to get overwhelmed. So when is
this and when where can people sign up for that
as well?

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Okay, so this is happening on Tuesday, May twentieth, and
that is going to be at Venus Demilo and Swansea, Massachusetts.
If you're from Rhode Island area, it's just over the border.
I think a lot of people are familiar with Venus
yeah in general, so that will be there and dinner
is at six pm and tickets are available on our
website again at one south Coast dot com, or you

(14:48):
can go to the direct link which is one south
Coast dot com slash Celebrity Dinner.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Okay, And if you are a South Coast business maybe
you're just obviously you've probably heard about the Chamber. But
if this inner, if you makes you want to join,
what do people need to do to join up with
the Chamber? Get involved with those lunches, so on and
so forth.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
So they can visit our website if they want wanted
to sign up online, there is a link right at
the top of the page that says become a member.
If they're interested in speaking to someone first before they
do that, they can email us at info at onesouth
Coast dot com.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Okay, last question for you before I let you go.
If somebody is a female business owner listening not just
on the South Coast but anywhere, what is some of
the advice you would have for them as they try
to grow their business or just kind of keep things
going in this world where businesses are kind of on
a roller coaster right now.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Well, I would be a terrible Chamber employee if I
didn't say networking is key. True, we see that all
the time. Unfortunately, we do see a lot of businesses
start up and then after a year or two they
end up having to close for a variety of reasons.
One of the things that we always try and stress
to people, especially to maximize their chamber benefits their membership,

(16:07):
is to network you. It can be we know it
can be very intimidating, very scary to get out there,
walk into a room full of people where you may
not know anyone, or maybe you only know one or
two people. It's intimidating. I've been there. I'm sure you've
probably been there to Nicole at some point. But we
have a wonderful group of Chamber ambassadors who we always

(16:29):
have some of them at our events. So whenever we
have a newbie joining us, we encourage that we introduce
them to our ambassadors, and they are wonderful about introducing
them to everyone else. So I would say the main
thing is definitely networking, Because networking you just never know.
You could just be having a regular conversation with somebody

(16:50):
and you just don't know where that conversation could go
and what other doors could open for you and other opportunities.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Yeah, it's true, all right, one South Coast dot Com Green.
Great to have you back on the show. Thank you
so much, and all the best with Johnny Damon and
all the best for your.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
Women's time to see Nicole.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
I will never say no to a visit to the
Venus de Milo, so thank you for your time, Lobster.
Have a safe and healthy weekend, stay warm and dry,
and join us again next week for another edition of
the show. I'm Nicole Davis from WBZ News Radio on iHeartRadio.
